Arsenal summer plans confirmed as three former Gunners set for sensational north London return

Arsenal will reunite with Granit Xhaka and two more former Gunners in two pre-season friendlies at the Emirates Stadium in August

Arsenal are set to face Lyon in this season’s Emirates Cup on Sunday 11 August. Arsenal will also play Bayer Leverkusen in a separate friendly several days before on Wednesday 7 August.

A traditional yearly friendly for the Emirates Stadium, it returns for just one day in an official capacity. Arsenal have taken on two sides in the past across a single weekend without the gap in between but being so close to the start of the season, the decision to play a second friendly which is not officially part of the Emirates Cup a few days before allows for more recovery time between games.

The interesting choice of both opponents is their links with the Gunners. Leverkusen, newly-crowned Bundesliga champions and Invincibles, achieved their success with the help of former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka, who will return to north London to play for the first time since his summer 2023 departure.

Speaking after the conformation that Leverkusen would compete with Arsenal in the Champions League next season, Xhaka said: “If I’m honest I don’t want to play against them.

“Everyone knows what a beautiful seven years I had there. But if it’s to happen then I’ll be sure to enjoy it.”

Well, whilst it won’t be in a competitive sense yet, the Swiss international will seemingly be involved against his old side sooner than he imagined. Plus, he will not be alone.

Lyon of course have more than one former Gunner on their books with both Alexandre Lacazette making their first playing-related return to the Emirates too. Both players left when their deals with the club expired, Lacazette in 2022 and Maitland-Niles the following year – both signing with the side that would finish sixth in Ligue 1 last season on a free transfer.

Lacazette has enjoyed something of a renaissance of his career back in France. He has scored a rather staggering 53 goals across all competitions in 74 games for OL.

It were these types of numbers which attracted Arsenal and Arsene Wenger to sign Lacazette in 2017 but sadly he could never replicate the form and the arrival of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would further that issue.

However, there is a chance that Lacazette could miss the Emirates Cup clash. Thierry Henry selected Lacazette as part of France's Olympic squad for the tournament held in Paris from July 24 to August 10 and therefore he may not be back with his club side by this point.

These games are a great chance for supporters to see their first game considering the clamour for tickets for competitive games. For those not in attendance, football.london will be providing match coverage for both games on August 7 and 11.

Arsenal will be looking to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League in the 2024-25 season. They were so close to winning the trophy but ended up in second place.

The Gunners are already gearing up for the next season with a series of pre-season friendly matches. These games are a crucial part of the team’s preparation, offering a chance for the players to build their fitness and for the manager to experiment with tactics and formations.

Just a few days later, on July 31, 2024, Arsenal will take on Liverpool at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. This game will be a test of Arsenal's mettle against the Reds without head coach Jurgen Klopp. While the kick-off times are yet to be confirmed, fans around the world are eagerly awaiting these exciting fixtures.

When does the 2024-25 season start for Arsenal?

The Premier League 2024/25 season dates have already been confirmed. The campaign will begin on August 17 , 2024.

Premier League rivals Manchester United , Liverpool and Arsenal will face off in a series of matches in the United States this summer, the clubs announced Friday.

The preseason tour will begin with United taking on Arsenal on July 27 at the 70,000-seat SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California -- the home of the NFL's Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers .

Liverpool and Arsenal will then face off on July 31 at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field, the 69,328-capacity home of the Philadelphia Eagles and another stadium that will host matches during the 2026 World Cup to be jointly hosted by the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

Finally, Liverpool and United -- England's two most successful clubs -- will meet Aug. 3 at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, marking the biggest club soccer game ever played at the 77,559-capacity Williams-Brice Stadium.

Liverpool, the current Premier League leaders, are set to have a new manager by the time they head to the U.S., with Jurgen Klopp having announced that he will step down at the end of the season . It will be Liverpool's first visit to the U.S. since 2019.

It is the second straight summer that Arsenal and Man United will face each other in the U.S., following their sold-out match at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium this past July.

"It's great to be visiting the US again this summer," Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said as part of the club's announcement . "Our matches against Manchester United and Liverpool will be great preparation ahead of the new season.

"Our tour last year was a real success and it's always an amazing experience to play in front of our passionate supporters in the US. We're looking forward to returning and seeing everyone again."

Last year, United played four preseason games in the U.S. in front of 235,168 total fans.

Arsenal’s Premier League fixtures: Full 2024-25 schedule and dates

Arsenal will start the 2024-25 Premier League season by welcoming Wolverhampton Wanderers to the Emirates Stadium.

Last season’s Premier League runners-up first play rivals Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on September 14, while the second north London derby of the season takes place on January 14.

Mikel Arteta’s side play Ipswich Town at home on Boxing Day and finish the season at another newly-promoted team in Southampton.

‘Not a straightforward start to the season’

Arsenal beginning their 2024-25 season against Wolves at home should represent a decent chance to get off to a winning start. Despite Gary O’Neil impressing as head coach, Arsenal have won their last six games against Wolves.

The start of the season as a whole will not be straightforward, however. A visit to Villa Park on matchday two will present their first test against a Champions League rival, while they face both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City away after returning from the first international break of the season.

The first matchday of the League Phase of the Champions League (September 17-19) will also be played between these fixtures, creating a bigger selection headache for Mikel Arteta.

The end of October/beginning of November will also be testing as they play Liverpool, Newcastle United and Chelsea. Matchday four of eight of the Champions League also falls between the Newcastle and Chelsea matches.

The run-in will no doubt be key for Arsenal in 2025. From April onwards, they mostly face teams they are expected to beat. Five will be at home and four away. With Liverpool, Newcastle and Southampton (where they have not won since 2021) as their final three games, Arsenal will need to carry strong momentum into those closing weeks of the season.

Key dates for the 2024-25 season

The transfer window officially opened on Friday, June 14, with the infamous cut-off date for the 2023-24 profit and sustainability rules (PSR) reporting period coming at the end of the month on June 30. The window closes on Friday, August 30, at 11pm BST (6pm ET).

The winter transfer window will open on Wednesday, January 1, closing on Monday, February 3.

The new Premier League season gets underway on the weekend of August 16-18, a week after the Community Shield. That game will be another Manchester derby and a replay of last season’s FA Cup final.

The Premier League season finishes on Sunday, May 25, when all 10 fixtures will be played at the same time.

Premier League clubs will enter the FA Cup at the third round, which begins on Saturday, January 11. The Carabao Cup will begin in mid-August with Premier League teams not playing in Europe entering in the second round and the remaining seven clubs receiving a bye to the third round.

The newly-expanded Champions League, meanwhile, begins on September 17. The Europa League starts on September 25 and the Conference League gets underway on October 3.

What about the Champions League?

Arsenal qualified for the Champions League with that second-place finish last season.

This is the first year of the expanded Champions League, with 36 teams taking place in the group stage proper. Instead of being placed into groups of four, each team will play eight seeded matches and the top eight of the 36 will qualify directly for the knockouts, with the ninth-16th-placed clubs contesting a play-off round.
