Jhalana Leopard Safari in Jaipur [Tips, Hotels, Booking]

Jhalana national park in Jaipur is one of its kind in India as it is the only park with leopards as the apex predators. In a state dominated by tigers, forts and deserts, leopards have made a gala entry. Within a short span of three years (2013-2016), leopard population in this protected area grew from a mere eight cats, to a whopping thirty.

The very first Jhalana leopard safari was conducted in May 2017 based on the tiger tourism module in other parks. Nowadays, up to 10 jeeps are allowed per morning and afternoon safari daily inside the Jhalana forest reserve.

What to Expect on a Jhalana Leopard Safari

Jhalana has around 30 leopards in an area of 75 sq. km so chances are sightings will be extremely good. In fact, as most guides and tour agents claim, you have over 90% chance of spotting the elusive leopard in this park. However, with wildlife there are never any guarantees, so visit with an open mind and enjoy the jungles.

jhalana national park jaipur

There are several reasons which lead to Jhalana being one of the top parks for leopard sightings in India. The primary reason is that leopards are apex predators in this forest. As such they have zero competition for prey and are much more confident and less shy. The other reason is the size of the park, if you compare it to tiger reserves in the state, Jhalana is way smaller so the leopard density per sq. km is pretty high, giving you better chances of sighting one in the wild here.

jhalana leopard safari

For me, personally, after decades of safaris in tiger reserves all over India, I had only ever managed to spot the elusive leopard cat a handful of times. However, in Jhalana – we had not just one but three excellent sightings. Plus, thanks to the expert guidance of Anurag from TigerWalah , we were almost always the very first ones to sight the cat.

Anyone who has ever been in a wildlife park in India can pretty much vouch that it is no fun sighting a tiger or leopard with 20 jeeps surrounding it and several loud people scurrying around their jeeps to find the best spot/angle. So private sightings are that much more rewarding, and with the trained eyes of Anurag, we got lucky not once but thrice in one day!

Watching that elusive hunter no more than a few meters away from my jeep, made this one of the best days in the bush for me.  Speaking from three decades of experience, scouring the jungles of India, I can confidently say the people behind TigerWalah know wild feline behavior and have tracking down to the T.

jhalana forest jaipur

Check out this video for an idea of what to expect, though I must add it took a lot of luck and good tracking work by Anurag for us to catch this wild cat having some fun by the water –

Alongside leopards, you can also spot an array of foxes, blue bulls, wild boars and several species of birds in Jhalana forest. This jungle is also home to two wild hyenas but you have to be extremely lucky to spot them. We did find their footprints near a water hole but had no luck spotting them.

Grey Partridge

With two operational gates in Jhalana, one has a better habitat for leopards but the other happens to be the best for sightings. Unlike at other parks, you can move around freely here within the stipulated safari time frame (without any zone/ gate restrictions).

Best time to Visit Jhalana Park?

Jhalana is the only national park in India , which is open throughout the year. This makes it a good option for those yearning for the jungles during the monsoons and sightings are excellent throughout the year.

How to Book Jhalana Leopard Safari?

In order to book your Jhalana leopard safari with TigerWalah, simply fill out the booking request form  and you will get a custom quote based on your dates and requirement.

You can easily get the Jhalana leopard safari price and book online on the official government website. However, I would highly recommend going through an expert like TigerWalah for the best safari experience. Their quotes would include services of an experienced guide trained to track wild cats, Jhalana safari entry fee, Jhalana safari charges and fun anecdotes of the wild to keep you entertained.

Where to Stay in Jaipur for Jhalana Safari?

The pink city of Jaipur offers all sorts of accommodation options for every budget and travel style. Since Jhalana is a small park and doesn’t exactly have any wildlife lodges popping up around every corner, I would recommend staying in a nice hotel.

Usually, everyone who visits Jhalana, flocks to Malviya Nagar which is just a couple of kms from the entrance gate. Since we always prefer doing what most don’t, we chose the luxurious property of Fairmont .

The grand Fairmont Jaipur

Even though it is relatively far from Jhalana, most safari operators offer free pick and drop from any hotel in Jaipur (best to check this with your operator prior to booking). Also, isn’t it way better to stay further from the crowds? For me, it’s always a big plus to have a serene location.

Fairmont Jaipur Review

Set in the lovely backdrop of Aravalli hills, Fairmont Jaipur is simply exceptional. Its close proximity to Delhi makes it a favorite for Delhites looking for a peaceful, luxury getaway.

My parents and I were given two huge deluxe rooms with a view to die for. As soon as I stepped into my room, the feeling of Rajputana  royalty and grandeur overwhelmed me.

Opulent rooms at Fairmont

It felt like I was stepping into a time machine and back to the Mughal era. Everything oozed opulence, from the jharokhas I could see from my window to the sumptuous room and the spacious bathroom with the biggest bath tub I have ever seen.

bathroom fairmont jaipur

Such grand settings, made me want to spend more time in the hotel than actually in Jhalana (which is a lot to say as wildlife is my number one love).

fairmont rooms

My second favorite part of the hotel was the lovely setting by the sprawling swimming pool and its adjoining grounds.

fairmont pool

The gold lounge has special access for members only. I got super lucky and was allowed to take a quick peak and it was surely worth it. The views from the lounge veranda were undoubtedly the best.

My top dining experience at Fairmont was at the fusion restaurant – Zarin . Everything from the impeccable decor to the delectable fare surpassed my expectations.

We also enjoyed a few delicious meals at the all day dining restaurant – Zoya and the buffet breakfast spread was so extensive that I seriously considered shrinking my plans for the day and just overdosing on calories. Alas, my hankering for adventure won out.

Lovely outdoor seating at Zoya

From the smiling staff to the ever helpful management, Fairmont gave us one of the best luxury hotel experiences we had all year. As it is Rajasthani royalty and charm cannot be surpassed and Fairmont ticked all the right boxes.

It is surrounded by Aravali hills, the oldest mountain series in India. Jhalana became a leopard reserve in 2017. The reserve is spread over an area of 20 square kilometers, with immense flora and fauna present in the park.

Leopard Sighting in Jhalana Leopard Safari

The Jhalana Leopard Safari currently hosts more than 40 leopards and 5 cubs! You also have the opportunity of visiting Shikaar Audi, the three-storeyed hunting lodge of the Royal families of Jaipur. It is located right in the middle of the leopard reserve! It has an animal-spotting platform from where you can also enjoy the sunrise and sunset.

Safari in Jhalana became operational for visitors way back in 2016. With a good and healthy population of leopards, Jhalana safari park is the best place to sight a leopard. Sometimes it just happens within the 5 minutes of entering the park. Due to their diurnal nature Leopards can be seen in the daytime as they are not scared of the presence of jeeps and humans in their natural habitat. Jhalana safari park gains quick popularity among wild enthusiasts and holds a prominent place in wildlife tourism in the world. Nestled lazily in the foothills of the magnificent hilly terrain of Aravali, the park is the fantastic gateway to an adventure-filled holiday amidst the raw nature along with an unforgettable sighting of exotic wild animals.

Flora & Fauna In Jhalana Safari Park:

Spotted Deer In Jhalana Leopard Reserve

Flora In Jhalana Leopard Reserve – narrow valleys of the Aravallis and sharp cliffs of hills dominate the landscape of Jhalana Leopard Reserve. The captivating natural surroundings of the forest of Jhalana and the tranquility here are extremely relaxing and a delight for the mind. The presence of such great wildlife in the urban region makes this land a different and unique site for nature enthusiasts. Jhalana is a dry deciduous forest. The forest remains dry most of the time of the year as trees shed their leaves in the dry season and lush emeralds during the monsoons. The Jhalana forest is dominated by plants like juliflora (Prosopis juliflora) and khejri (Prosopis cineraria). The rapidly growing juliflora was initially planted to provide firewood for local villagers. However, trees do not support the growth of other grasslands and trees. The slanting valleys have more Local flora variety such as dhak (Butea monosperma), salar (Boswellia serrata), dhonk (Anogeissus pendula), and kumta (Acacia senegal).

Fauna In Jhalana Leopard Reserve – Obviously, the majestic Leopard is the prime and most covered mammal of this Jhalana Leopard Reserve, which is also the top predator of the region and who comes first in the food chain of the Jhalana forest reserve. Although the Leopard is known to be a nocturnal, solitary, shy, and rare-sighted predator with a master of stealth hunting skills, Leopards of the Jhalana National Park are diurnal in nature like tigers in Ranthambore and Sariska , due to which they are easily visible in the daytime making it one of the most visited reserve forests by Leopard lovers.

Apart from the Leopard, other big cats of the Jhalana Leopard Park are Leopard, Indian civets, desert cats, and jungle cats. This forest also provides food and shelter to other animals like Striped Hyena, desert foxes, jackals, porcupines, jungle rats, monitor lizards, mongooses,  Sambar deer, spotted deer (chital), Blue Bull (Nilgai), and a variety of snakes.

A lot of rare bird species are found in Jhalana Leopard Reserve which makes this place a paradise for bird watching. Birds like the Indian Pitta, Dusky Eagle, Owl, Spotted Owlet, etc. can be seen in Jhalana National Park.

Best time to visit Jhalana Safari :

The Jhalana Leopard Reserve (The 1st Leopard reserve in India) is open for the safari tours for the visitors for all 12 months even in the monsoon season from 1st January to 31st December every year, according to the entry timings of that particular season.  In Monsoon season most of the protected reserves in the country are closed, but here’s something to compensate for that.

Though one can enjoy the Jhalana Leopard Safari and savor the view of the majestic Leopard anytime, from November to April is considered the best time to visit Jhalana reserve as the weather is delightful at this point of time and nature is in its complete blossom around this time enhancing the beauty of the forest.

Leopard safari launched at Bannerghatta Biological Park

Bengaluru, Jun 26 (PTI) Karnataka Minister for Forests, Ecology and Environment Eshwar Khandre on Wednesday launched the leopard safari at the Bannerghatta Biological Park here and asked officials to provide saplings to visitors at discounted rates.     He said that zoos are known to care for wildlife but apart from entertainment, zoos should also become centres of knowledge.     While inaugurating various development works including leopard safari at the Biological Park in Bannerghatta, which is touted as South India's first and largest in the country, he said people who come to the biological park are happy to see the wildlife but they should also be made aware of at least 10 types of trees by providing them information so that they can recognise the trees here.     Khandre said visitors will get to see the big cats in their natural environment spread across 20 hectares (49.5 acres) of deciduous forest in which eight leopards have been released.     The area is protected by a railway barricade and a chain link fence of 4.5 metre height.     In addition, metal sheets of 1.5 metres have been erected with a 30 degree slant, to ensure that the animals do not escape. The guidelines issued by the Central Zoo Authority have been adopted, he said.     The Minister noted that the hilly terrain of Bannerghatta covered with greenery hosts many leopards, whose cubs have been rescued by the officials often from agricultural fields. At present, the Biological Park rescue centre has 14 leopards.     As the department seeks to combine eco-tourism with afforestation, he asked officials to create awareness among the visitors at the zoo about biodiversity, the importance of oxygen-giving trees, role of forests and ecology in everyday life and sell saplings at discounted rates.     He urged officials to encourage them to buy a sapling on their way back home and plant it in front of their house and nurture it. In the same way that farmers are given saplings at a discounted rate, they also instructed that the visitors to the zoo should also be supplied with saplings at a discounted rate.     Khandre also inaugurated an elephant feeding centre built at a cost of Rs 10 lakh. The centre is aimed at creating a strong bond between mahuts and elephant calves, which are separated from their mothers at the age of three.     Presently, there are 26 elephants in Bannerghatta Biological Park and on an average, about two to three elephants are born every year. The centre will help mahuts and it will help to give round-the-clock care to the new-borns, the minister added.     Bhoomi Puja was also performed on Wednesday to begin work on a skywalk and five new animal enclosures at Bannerghatta Biological Park. The skywalk will connect the zoo with the butterfly park and provide a closer view of the canopy and birds.     He said the Biological Park will have a centre to support breastfeeding mothers and facilities will be provided to care for babies. Two more such centres will constructed by December next year.
