Hospitality, Travel and Tourism Management (BS)

Program description.

The BS in Hospitality, Travel and Tourism Management prepares students for management positions in one of the largest economic sectors worldwide. Combining a thorough liberal arts program of study with industry- specific business classes, students gain in-depth knowledge in the areas of hospitality finance, sales and marketing, revenue management, special event planning, destination development, and food and beverage operations. Students learn how to develop new hotel and resort concepts, market tourism destinations, and manage tourism and convention bureaus. Frequent site visits, industry events, and guest speakers ensure that students make use of all the opportunities New York City has to offer, both in and out of the classroom. In addition, they gain hands-on experience through internships, which develop them into successful—and highly employable—industry professionals.

New York University's Office of Undergraduate Admissions supports the application process for all undergraduate programs at NYU.  For additional information about undergraduate admissions, including application requirements, see How to Apply .

Program Requirements

Concentrations.

The program requires the completion of 128 credits, and students may choose one of six concentrations listed below.

The BS in Hospitality, Travel and Tourism Management prepares students for a wide range of careers in hotels, restaurants, catering companies, real estate and management services companies, online travel agencies, marketing and PR firms, destination marketing organizations, event companies and consulting firms. The degree has six concentrations:

Event Management

This concentration explores career opportunities in festivals, weddings and social events, trade shows, and experiential marketing.

The event sector is growing fast, and offers a wealth of career opportunities. Whether you are interested in festivals, weddings, business conventions or sporting events, this concentration will equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to succeed in this exciting field.

Event planning, design and production are a central focus of this concentration. Event planners/producers coordinate every detail of the event: from the venue and speakers to arranging for printed materials and audio-visual equipment. They develop the concept for the event, and liaise with suppliers and staff. Event planners/producers may work for non-profit organizations, associations, hotels, corporations, and government. Many are independent business owners and coordinate events for a range of clients.

Events can also play an important role in a company’s marketing strategy. Experiential or event marketing is a promotional strategy that involves face-to-face contact between companies and their customers at special events like concerts, fairs, and sporting events. Brands use event marketing entertainment (like shows, contests, or parties) to reach consumers through direct hand-to-hand sampling or interactive displays.

Marketing and Analytics

In this concentration, students study hospitality and travel sales and marketing, as well as strategies and processes that optimize a business’s revenues.

The marketing and analytics concentration provides students with in-depth knowledge of the marketing functions of hospitality businesses.  Professionals in marketing and branding roles need strong analytical skills as they conduct market research, oversee multimedia advertising campaigns, and consult with outside agencies, promotional representatives and corporate executives.

Marketers and revenue managers currently evolve in an increasingly digital and data-driven environment. They are tasked to develop and implement strategies to maximize the business's revenues and profitability. On the basis of daily reports, they make predictions of demand and make distribution channels and pricing decisions. They also leverage the power of loyalty programs and optimize the entire guest acquisition phase; in partnership with travel agencies - on and offline - and other travel intermediaries.

Leadership and Management

This concentration focuses on the operational aspects of hospitality businesses – a great concentration for budding general managers!

The leadership and management concentration provides students with in-depth knowledge of the operational aspects of hospitality businesses. This is an attractive concentration for budding general managers, as the concentration includes aspects of sales and marketing, food and beverage management, but also leadership and law. Hotel operations roles are available in a wide range of departments: front desk, catering, events, housekeeping and human resources. Professionals in operations oversee the daily activities of their teams, and aim to ensure guest satisfaction.

Hotel Real Estate Finance and Development

This concentration provides students with in-depth knowledge of financial management and the hotel development process.

The hotel real estate finance and development concentration provides students with in-depth knowledge of financial management and the hotel development process. Hotel finance careers may include responsibilities such as overseeing the financial processes of the hotel, maintaining audits and reports, producing monthly income statements, and coordinating budgets and forecasts. The hospitality sector is mostly associated with the hotel industry, however, many other asset classes fall into this sector, including large scale resorts, spas, timeshares, restaurants and casinos.

Another aspect of this concentration is hotel development and asset management. Many well-known hotel brand names do not own the building in which the hotel operates, but rather contract their management and brand name to the owner for a fee. Owners and real estate investment trusts employ analysts to maximize the returns earned by the property. Hotel investment professionals produce valuations, and make recommendations about the development of new assets or the remodeling of existing assets.

Travel and Tourism Development

This concentration prepares students for careers in destination marketing organizations, (online) travel agents, tour operators, airlines, cruise lines, PR firms, and visitor attractions.

The travel and tourism industry has shown remarkable resilience in the face of economic challenges, geopolitical conditions and natural disasters. It remains one of the largest and fastest growing industry sectors in the world. Graduate tourism degrees prepare students for a wealth of careers in the public, private and voluntary sectors. WTTC estimates that the travel and tourism sectors support 292 million jobs worldwide, or 1 in every 10 jobs.

The travel and tourism development concentration prepares students for careers in destination marketing organizations, (online) travel agents, tour operators, airlines, cruise lines, event companies, development agencies, marketing and PR firms and visitor attractions. Students will explore various aspects of this large and multi-faceted sector, including casinos, special interest tourism products, sports tourism and mega-events, entrepreneurship and destination marketing.

Entrepreneurship

In this concentration, students will learn the different aspects of the typical entrepreneurship journey: from ideation, to prototyping,  to business launch, and management as applied to hospitality.

Entrepreneurship plays a crucial role in innovation, economic development and competitiveness. The entrepreneurship concentration provides students with in-depth knowledge of the crucial role that entrepreneurship plays in the travel and hospitality business. It also provides them with the entrepreneurial and innovative mindset sought after by many employers. The courses offer an overview of the different aspects of the typical entrepreneurship cycle, from ideation to business launch and management. Courses in this concentration are experiential,  applying theory to real world problems and opportunities.

Math In Tourism- 4 Ways In Which Maths Help Your Travels

In this article, we’re trying something new and going beyond the usual talk of destinations and itineraries. We’re delving into how ‘math in tourism’ subtly shapes our journeys, helps us stay efficient at all times and ultimately collect more memorable memories during our trip. We’ll see how thoughtful planning can lead to resource preservation and how each encounter with new faces enriches our perspective and we explore 4 important ways in which maths help your travels.

Ready? Let’s dig in!

Math In Tourism 101: The Budgeting Part

math in tourism

Imagine you’re embarking on a journey, not just any trip, but a meticulously crafted adventure where every detail is a brushstroke on the canvas of experience . This is where ‘math in tourism’ plays the unsung hero. you have a dream destination, a list of must-see landmarks, and a palate eager to savor local delicacies. But how do you ensure that this dream doesn’t turn into a budgetary nightmare?

Budgeting, in its essence, is a dance of numbers, a delicate balance between what you desire and what you can afford. It’s like a culinary recipe, where the right mix of ingredients – flights, accommodations, meals, and activities – needs precise measurement to create the perfect dish, your dream vacation.

Load Calculation & Traveling Light

travel packing

Ever wondered how airlines decide just how many suitcases , golf bags, and quirky souvenirs can tag along on your flight ? It’s not a whimsical decision made by flipping a coin or a random guess; it’s a meticulous calculation, a feat of ‘math in tourism’ that often goes unnoticed.

Imagine an airplane as a floating city in the sky – it has its limits, much like an elevator with a sign that sternly says, “Maximum capacity: X number of people.” Only in this case, the stakes are sky-high, quite literally!

Each suitcase is a citizen of this airborne city, and each has its own ‘weighty’ story. The math wizards in the airline’s control center are like urban planners, calculating how to accommodate everyone comfortably without overburdening the city. These calculations not only ensure the load isn’t too much for the aircraft (this is crucial for a safe journey) but also the numbers are set in a way that allows airlines to maximize their profits .

Enjoying this post? Then you may also like our ultimate minimalist packing list .

Mapping Your Trip- Distance Calculation

travel map

Ever planned a trip and wondered how your GPS always knows the best route ? That’s just travel maths working its everyday magic. It’s like a game of connect-the-dots but with roads instead of dots. This helps you find not only the shortest distance between two points but also the most convenient and smarter way to get there (i.e. not to get stuck in traffic). Real life isn’t a straight line – there are mountains, lakes, and all sorts of twists and turns. It’s like having a smart friend who knows all the roads and shortcuts.

Making The Best Use Of Your Time

travel math

Among other things, math can also help you avoid spending your holiday stuck in traffic or waiting in long lines. Let’s say you’re in Paris , eager to visit all the must-see spots like the Louvre. If you do your homework and research every place you like to visit (i.e. the Louvre) you can figure out what’s the best time to get there (i.e. “If it’s 10 AM now, and the museum gets crowded by noon, let’s get there by 11 AM to beat the rush”).

Exchanging Currency And Learning Foreign Metrics

foreign currency

Have you ever landed in a new country and found yourself staring blankly at a price tag, trying to figure out if you’re looking at a bargain or a bank breaker ? Welcome to the world of currency exchange, where math becomes your indispensable shopping buddy. Think of it as a game show, “The Price is… What, Exactly?”

But it’s not just about shopping. Ever tried following a recipe from a foreign cookbook? “100 grams of this, 30 centimeters of that.” If you’re used to pounds and inches, this can feel like decoding a secret message. That’s where math slips in, like a culinary interpreter, helping you measure and mix to perfection.

And let’s not forget about filling up your rental car. You’re at the gas station, and suddenly you’re doing mental gymnastics with liters and kilometers. Math jumps in like a friendly pit crew member, ensuring you’re not under or overestimating your fuel needs. It’s the unsung hero making sure your road trip doesn’t end with you stranded on a scenic route.

Resource Preservation

bike travel

Last but not least, travel math helps you with resource preservation during your journeys. When you pack your bags for a holiday , you’re not just taking clothes and gadgets; you’re also carrying a responsibility – the responsibility to preserve the beautiful destinations you visit. This is where ‘math in tourism’ steps in, not with a calculator and equations, but as a silent guardian of the environment.

It’s like going to a party where the host knows exactly how much food to prepare – enough to ensure everyone’s fed but not so much that it goes to waste. Math in tourism does that with resources. It helps destinations manage their natural wealth, ensuring they remain as postcard-perfect for future travelers as they are for you.

And lastly, let’s not forget about carbon footprint which if used properly as a metric, can help us make sure the beauty we witness traveling today can be experienced by others tomorrow.

How Do You Measure The Value Of A Trip?

travel landscape boat

Trying to answer the question “How was your trip?” can be difficult. Firstly, because it makes you realize you’re not there anymore, and secondly because it feels like trying to describe a color you’ve never seen before. Therefore, this is one question travel math can’t help you answer. Each journey consists of breathtaking, profound, and sometimes (let’s face it) even forgettable moments.

But we also can’t forget the people you meet. From the friendly local who showed you a hidden café, to the fellow traveler whose stories by inspired you to try something new, the people you meet during your travels become landmarks of your journey.

Lastly, perhaps the most unquantifiable aspect of travel is the spiritual. People say travel broadens the mind, but it also deepens the soul by allowing you to see the world through new eyes; eyes that have witnessed kindness in strangers and found beauty in unexpected corners.

Is Tourism a BA or BS?

By Anna Duncan

Tourism has become one of the fastest-growing industries worldwide. With its rising popularity, many individuals are considering pursuing a degree in tourism to advance their careers. However, there seems to be confusion about whether tourism is a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree.

Let’s explore the differences between the two and see which category tourism falls under.

What is a BA Degree?

A BA degree is an undergraduate course that emphasizes on liberal arts subjects such as literature, philosophy, history, and social sciences. Students pursuing this degree gain knowledge and skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and creativity. A BA degree is typically awarded in fields like humanities, languages, and social sciences.

What is a BS Degree?

A BS degree is an undergraduate course that applies scientific methods to solve practical problems. Students pursuing this degree gain knowledge and skills in quantitative reasoning, analysis, research, and problem-solving. A BS degree is typically awarded in fields such as engineering, computer science, mathematics, and natural sciences.

So What About Tourism?

Tourism can be categorized as both a BA and BS degree depending on the program’s focus. In general terms, a BA in tourism focuses on developing students’ management skills while emphasizing cultural studies and social sciences like anthropology or sociology. On the other hand, a BS in tourism focuses on teaching students technical skills such as accounting or marketing while emphasizing environmental studies like ecology or geography.

BA in Tourism

A BA in Tourism aims at developing students’ managerial abilities to work efficiently within the travel industry. The coursework typically includes subjects related to business administration such as finance, marketing management along with subjects that provide an insight into cultural studies such as anthropology or sociology which helps students understand different cultures better.

Students who opt for a BA in tourism can expect to learn about hospitality, tourism management, and event planning. They also get to explore the significance of tourism in the global market and understand how to create sustainable tourism practices.

BS in Tourism

A BS in Tourism aims at preparing students with technical skills that are required to work in the travel industry. The coursework typically includes subjects related to business management such as accounting, marketing management along with environmental studies such as ecology or geography which helps students understand the impact of tourism on nature.

Students who opt for a BS in Tourism can expect to learn about tourism development, eco-tourism, and sustainable tourism practices. They also gain knowledge about how to use technology efficiently within the travel industry.

In conclusion, it can be said that while both BA and BS degrees have their importance, choosing between them depends on individual interests and career goals. Students who are interested in a managerial role within the travel industry may opt for a BA degree while those interested in technical roles may choose a BS degree.
