Sunset Dolphin Tour Of Jekyll Island – Look What We Saw!

Last year Clay and the family and I took a morning Dolphin Tour courtesy of Jekyll Island Boat Tours . While there, we learned that they also do a sunset dolphin tour and couldn’t wait to get back this year to experience the boat tour at sunset. We were, very nicely, given a discount as a thank you for posting both times.

Dolphin Tours Of Jekyll Island Sunset Tour

Sunset Dolphin tours begin at 7 pm and are approximately 90 minutes long. I have to say that it is amazing to head out on the boat in the daylight and watch the sun go through various stages of sunset over the water. From twilight to sunset…. it is incredible!

I have a video, below, that shows just a little of what we saw on our sunset dolphin tour. I apologize for the bounce and blur in the video and photos. The tide was turning and it was hard to hold the camera still on the waves. You could feel the waves banging beneath the boat! Even though it was a little bouncy, it was still very relaxing and the sound of the waves actually had a calming affect. Clay and I both agree that even if we never saw the first dolphin, this tour would be well worth taking. Watching the sunset, listening to the birds, and feeling the waves is enough to lull you to sleep.

Not that the tour is boring. There’s nothing boring about it. It’s just super relaxing. On this years tour, we had the honor of having Captain Pablo and Captain. Captain Pablo did most of the talking while the other captain sailed the boat, although he gave us some info later on in the tour as well. Throughout the tour, the captains give info on the various things you see along the way. Shark Tooth Beach, Driftwood beach that isn’t drift wood at all, a sunken shrimp boat that was beached at low tide, the lighthouse, water-park the marine life and more. It is a very interesting tour to take!

Seeing dolphins isn’t a guarantee but we were lucky enough, both times, to see several dolphins on our tour. We had gone out pretty far this time before we began seeing them. But once we did, they seemed to swim right around with the boat, giving us all great views from all sides. I wish y’all could have been there with us!

The highlight of our daughters time on the boat was when Captain Pablo let the kids take a turn at the wheel! She LOVED being captain for a moment.

Jekyll Island Sunset Dolphin Tour Daughter Sailing The Boat

The highlight, for me, was that incredible sunset. You can see how the light changed throughout our tour, in the collage below.

Jekyll Island Sunset Dolphin Tour

I’m not sure if we’ll get to go back to Saint Simons Island again. But, if we do, I plan on heading to Jekyll Island for a dolphin tour each time! I’d go every week if I could. It never gets old!!!

Here is a slideshow featuring photos from our sunset dolphin tour and a quick video is below that.

When you book your boat tour , tell them Crystal Martin at Cinnamon Hollow sent you so they can keep track of where referrals come from! I don’t get anything in return, I just love to hear when readers check out the attractions we recommend!

Amazing Sunset Dolphin Tour

Awesome experience! Best $50 ever spent for a date night! We did the sunset tour and were fortunate enough to see more dolphins than we could count! Dolphins were everywhere! The captain and his lady mate were very knowledgeable and made the trip fun with their jokes and stories.

Thank you so much for the amazing review!

Our family has been visiting Jekyll Island/the Golden Isles of GA on and off for the past 20 years and we always make this cruise part of our stay. Yes, the scenery and sunsets are gorgeous and the dolphins and marine life are captivating, but what makes the excursion so entertaining are your two tour guides, Captain Adam and his wife, Jamie. This charismatic couple keeps you engaged and laughing the entire ride with their perfect blend of humor and educational/historical information. This is a Jekyll Island activity not to be missed, particularly if you have young children. Go have fun and watch those dolphins dance!

Thank you so much for the great review and recommendation!

We had a FABULOUS tour this morning! Dolphins were swimming by our boat before we even left the dock! Our captains were very entertaining and informative. We were incredibly fortunate to see frolicking dolphins for most of our tour. Great experience!!

Thank you so much for the fabulous review!

We thoroughly enjoyed our dolphin tour with Captains Paul and Pablo. We saw lots of dolphins (don't bother trying to get photos - they're too fast to capture - get video instead.) Keep in mind they don't jump out of the water, you'll just see them surfacing - but it's honestly worth taking the tour even without the dolphins. The guides were entertaining and I loved hearing their stories about the island. The boat is a great setup - often tours like these have the seats with your back to the water so you have to squirm around awkwardly to see but on this the seats face forward - you can still move around the boat when needed but it's a more comfortable ride in general. Definitely don't miss this on any visit to Jekyll Island!

Thank you for the outstanding recommendation and review!

This was a great experience and worth every penny. We understood going out that we may not have seen any dolphins. However, we ended up seeing 10-15 dolphins. Pablo was great entertainment and very knowledgeable about the island and dolphins! Him and Capt. Paul provided a memorable experience for us!

sunset dolphin tour jekyll island

We are so happy for this family experience that you shared with us!

My family and I were incredibly impressed with the tour. We were fortunate, in that we experienced a lot of dolphin activity on our tour, but what really made the experience was the enthusiasm, genuineness and deep level of knowledge of our guides, as well as the the top-level customer service provided by the staff. We were treated as the most important people in the world and that's how we left the tour feeling. What a great experience. Well worth the money spent. It was the highlight of our vacation.

Thank you for the super happy review and recommendation!

Plan your summer vacation to Coastal Georgia’s islands

Coastal Georgia's delights are many and Jekyll Beach will have you planning a repeat visit before you leave © MargaretW / Getty Images

If you've ever visited Savannah and thought the only thing that could improve upon its historical charm, Spanish moss-draped trees and delicious Southern dishes is an ocean view, you're in luck. Not only does such a place exist, but Coastal Georgia gifts you a range of options.

The tricky part is deciding between Tybee Island – within 30 minutes east of Savannah – and the seemingly endless barrier island goodness along Georgia’s shore. As soon as summer rolls around, these islands are the place to be, with blissful stretches of white sand, copious amounts of fishing, immaculate golf courses and family-friendly fun at every turn.

Be it a vacation rental with 20 friends or a boutique getaway with your beloved, your summer adventure awaits on one of Coastal Georgia's delightful islands. Here’s how to choose the best one for you and plan your trip.

Tybee Island lighthouse and light keepers house

Step 1: Where to base your summer adventure

Tybee island.

Vibes: This is a favorite of Savannah locals – it’s a quick drive and full of colorful residences and cultural attractions within its three square miles. This is the ideal locale for a vacation home rental, which comes in cottage, condo and mansion form. Its Southern end is the place to be, with top-notch shopping along its Tybrisa Street artery.

Do: Dolphin tours are quite popular throughout Tybee Island and  Captain Derek’s Dolphin Adventure Tour offers a sunset experience with breathtaking views. For history buffs, Fort Pulaski National Monument  – just off the island – marks the site of the first Civil War battle that used rifled artillery, and there are a couple of short, easy hiking trails too.

Stay: The Surf Song bed and breakfast is housed in a southern estate dating back to 1904, with a pool, private beach access and vast green garden space. Beachside Colony Resort is the only oceanside option on the island, with two pools, a sand path to the beach, and condos with multiple bedrooms for larger groups.

Eat: Back River Brewery serves up the spectrum of brews – from lagers to IPAs – and has an equally diverse, buzzy menu including smoked beer brats and a smoked prime rib melt. Make a reservation at Sundae Café , which is locally renowned for its interpretations of southern fare, like a lobster-loaded sweet potato waffle.

St. Simons Island

Vibes: The largest of what are known as Georgia’s Golden Isles (St. Simons, Little St. Simons and Jekyll), this is where moss-draped oaks, art galleries, quaint boutiques and super-friendly locals mesh. It’s also a great island to explore on two wheels – you can take in vistas from its pier to marshy creatures at Cannon’s Point Preserve . Adding to its charm, you can access Little St. Simons Island off its northern shore, which is a birdwatching haven.

Do: Shop and stroll through Pier Village , starting on the main drag of Mallery Street. For a unique gift, hit Golden Isles Bracelet Co. , with its trinkets inspired by mermaids, oysters and sea turtles. Pop by the Sea Island Golf Club entrance and see the “Avenue of the Oaks” – stately trees dating back to the early 1800s.

Stay: For a boutique option, Hotel Simone has sea-inspired suites on the central Ocean Boulevard. Ocean Inn and Suites is no-frills, quaint and a block north of the St. Simons Island Lighthouse Museum .

Eat: Southern Soul is the island’s barbecue king, with its locally inspired Brunswick Stew (pork, beans, potatoes and more), being the must-try. Porch has Nashville hot chicken and fried catfish that you can get equally as spicy.

Hiker enjoying walk on the beach at sunrise. Drift wood are left behind from years of erosion. Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island, Georgia, USA.

Jekyll Island

Vibes: Historic buildings, conservation-centric experiences and mini golf abound on this multifaceted island. There are fun tours on offer, which come in various forms spanning traditional golf carts to charming Model T replicas. For the latter, hit up the Millionaire Motorcar Tour within Jekyll Island’s historic district.

Do: The Georgia Sea Turtle Center is a conservation haven – it’s the only spot in the entire state dedicated to the beloved shelled creatures, providing education about the species and prioritizing their rehabilitation. For a beach day like no other, head to the northern portion of the island and Driftwood Beach . Living up to its name, mammoth pieces of gray-meets-brown driftwood colors its white sands, making for quite the eerie yet beautiful seascape.

Stay: Villas by the Sea is one of the island’s bigger resorts, complete with villas of up to three bedrooms, an on-site playground for kids and an outdoor pool. Otherwise, check out the AirBnb and VRBO landscape here for historical stays.

Eat: The standout restaurants follow a nautical theme when it comes to monikors. Case in point: Beach House is a craft beer lover’s dream with two-dozen rotating brews on tap and open-air The Wharf has a light-drenched bistro made to enjoy a sunset while dining on oysters on the half shell.

Step 2: Book your accommodations

Summer is peak tourist season and you'll need to book as far in advance as possible. Some home rentals – via sites like Airbnb and VRBO – may be bookable up to a year in advance and annual trip takers snag their go-tos as soon as they are available. Quaint cottage homestays and stately inns throughout the isles provide the most charming abodes.

The Grey Owl Inn on St. Simon’s Island is quietly nestled less than a mile inland from St. Simon’s East Beach – its grounds are dotted with stately oaks, a water garden with a gazebo for maximum relaxation and five suites. Camping and glamping are growing in popularity in the region, too. Little Raccoon Key , a private island off Jekyll Island, is among the more unique spots, with an on-site chef and, periodically, dolphins swimming by.

A group of red brown wild horses leisurely grazing on the white sandy beach of Cumberland Island National Seashore, Georgia, USA

Step 3: Plan your days and the best things to do on your summer trip

If you love nature and luxurious surroundings, book an overnight at the charming  Greyfield Inn on Cumberland Island – Georgia's southernmost barrier island. Wild horses roam around this tranquil place and perfect white sands stretch for 17 miles. Take the chance to tour the ruins of Dungeness , the one-time home of Thomas and Lucy Carnegie. Don't worry if your budget doesn't cover extra accommodation – Cumberland Island is the perfect spot for a day trip.

For birdwatching fans, the Colonial Coast Birding Trail offers a wealth of avian delights. A favorite is Little St. Simons Island – it is only accessible via boat, but you’re often treated with hoards of blue herons, soaring bald eagles and shore birds aplenty.

Step 4: Choosing the best places to dine along Georgia's coast

Bring an appetite for some low country fare, rich with fresh seafood catches and hearty southern delights. Among the more unique options in the region, Skipper’s Fish Camp in Darien has an adjacent dock space for the local shrimp fleet. This means mounds of fresh shrimp are delivered to the spot daily, for concoctions spanning a creamy shrimp dip to shrimp and the cheesiest of grits.

If you’re looking to snag some grub for a picnic or in-room dining, pimiento cheese, pecans, peaches and peanuts are regional favorites and must be tried in all of their forms. For all of the above, Jekyll Market is renowned for its gourmet offering and homegrown yet expansive vibe.

Step 5: Getting there

Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport is approximately 50 minutes east of Tybee Island and Jacksonville International Airport is an hour from Jekyll and St. Simon’s Island. Amtrak makes regional stops in Savannah and Yemassee, S.C., which will require a drive to the islands. With so many different landscapes to explore, renting a car is the way to go. Rideshare services like Lyft and Uber can be difficult to book throughout the coastal region, particularly in more remote areas – it’s wise to check ahead of time on these apps if cars are available and, if possible, to book in advance to avoid being stranded.

A Black couple walking along Tybee Beach in Georgia together

Step 6: What to pack

Temperatures hover in the upper 80s and low 90s during the day and dip into the upper 70s at night. July and August are typically the rainiest days of the year in the region. Pack a rain jacket to be prepared for the temperature swings and possible storms. Otherwise, colorful beach casual or beach chic attire is the norm, with bathing suits, sandals and cover-ups being beach musts. If you’re planning to hit some of the more remote islands and parks, take a water bottle, sunscreen and bug spray to navigate the general mugginess.

Georgia Travel: 9+ Fun Things To Do On Jekyll Island With Kids

J ekyll Island, a hidden gem along Georgia’s coast, is perfect for families seeking sun-soaked adventures and unforgettable memories. Dive into the magic of this captivating island with my list of 9+ fun things to do on Jekyll Island with kids, and ensure your family getaway is something you’ll treasure forever.

Also, if you still need to plan your trip, my post about  Best Places To Stay On Jekyll Island  will help you find the best accommodations for your family trip!

Where is Jekyll Island Located?

If you are unfamiliar with Jekyll Island, it is a pristine barrier island off the southeastern coast of  Georgia . Nestled among Georgia’s Golden Isles, it is part of a chain of barrier islands renowned for their natural beauty and coastal charm.

Situated approximately midway between Savannah, Georgia, and Jacksonville, Florida, Jekyll Island is easily reachable for those exploring the southeastern United States. The island’s unique blend of historic sites, picturesque beaches, and ecological wonders makes it a sought-after destination for families, history enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a peaceful retreat along the stunning Atlantic coastline.

Accessible by car via the Jekyll Island Causeway, this 7-mile-long island is a haven for nature enthusiasts, history buffs, and beach lovers alike. Interestingly, the island is actually owned and managed by the state’s Jekyll Island Authority, and the conservation efforts are much appreciated by visitors. Due to building restrictions, the island is significantly less congested than its neighbors. For that reason, it is one of the last places where you can truly relax.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Jekyll Island?

Its location along the Atlantic Ocean lends itself to a mild climate, making  Jekyll Island  an inviting destination throughout the year. Summertime is the best time to visit if you are looking for beach weather. Everything is open during the summertime, but that is when the area is most crowded. However, it is nowhere near as crowded as other  popular beach destinations . There are plenty of things to do on Jekyll Island with kids in the summer.

In summer, the days revolve around the beach and pool. But, in the winter, the Historic District, in particular, becomes a magical holiday haven. There are actually quite a few things to do on Jekyll Island with kids during the winter.

Visiting Jekyll Island with kids for the holidays has been a tradition for generations. In fact, iconic American families such as the Carnegies, Rockefellers, and Vanderbilts used to winter here! If you visit over the holidays, your family can enjoy the  Holly Jolly Jekyll  celebration held between November 24 and January 7 this year. There are holiday light tours, fireworks, a light parade, and more!

Things To Do On Jekyll Island With Kids

If you are looking for a place to spend true quality time with your family, Jekyll Island is one of my top family travel recommendations. As I mentioned above, it is very different from most other travel destinations in the southeast. There is a slower pace here, much like what people desire when visiting  30A in the Florida panhandle . On Jekyll Island, the to-do list is short, making it perfect for a long weekend trip.

Here are some of my favorite things to do on Jekyll Island with kids!

1. Experience The Magic of Driftwood Beach

You can not visit Jekyll Island without a visit to the fascinating  Driftwood Beach . Known for its hauntingly beautiful landscapes, this unique beach is adorned with weathered trees and driftwood sculptures. This, by far, tops my list of things to do on Jekyll Island with kids!

Let your kids’ imaginations run wild as they explore this magical piece of shoreline, offering the perfect backdrop for family photos and beachcombing treasures. If you want to catch the iconic sunrises, arrive early and check the tides. I have a dedicated blog post with many pictures from our visit to Driftwood Beach and some tips for your adventure!

Read:  Visiting Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island .

Also, while we didn’t get a chance to do it,  horseback riding on Driftwood Beach  looks magical! I 100% will be doing this on our next family trip to Jekyll Island.

2. Georgia Sea Turtle Center

Both the children and the adults are sure to enjoy a visit to the famous  Georgia Sea Turtle Center  on Jekyll Island. This educational yet heartwarming experience was such a fun outing for our family while visiting Jekyll Island, Georgia.

Your kids will be captivated by the fascinating world of sea turtles through interactive exhibits and rehabilitation efforts. Witness the incredible work of dedicated professionals committed to the conservation and protection of these majestic creatures, making it an inspiring stop for the whole family.

For more information, including pictures and tips, please read my blog post about  Visiting The Sea Turtles on Jekyll Island . This is truly one of the most iconic things to do on Jekyll Island with kids!

3. Jekyll Island Boat Tours & Jekyll Island Dolphin Tours

Did you know that the waters around Jekyll Island are home to one of the world’s largest populations of beautiful bottlenose dolphins?

Book one of the  Captain Phillip  dolphin tours and watch majestic dolphins feeding, playing, or simply cruising about in their natural habitat. The 90-minute sightseeing tours along the Intracoastal waterway are fully narrated by expert local guides.

These tours offer a thrilling opportunity for kids to spot playful dolphins in their natural habitat. As they witness these marine wonders up close, the excitement and awe on your children’s faces will be a highlight of your island getaway. This is one of the most popular things to do on Jekyll Island with kids for a reason.

Whether you opt for a sunset cruise or a nature-focused expedition, your family will be treated to breathtaking views and the chance to encounter local wildlife. It’s a fantastic way to bond with your kids while immersing yourselves in the island’s natural beauty.

Tours depart from the Historic Jekyll Wharf at the Jekyll Island Club and run daily from March through October. November through February tours are limited, so check the calendar for availability. I recommend booking tickets in advance through  Jekyll Island Boat Tours .

4. Explore The Jekyll Island Historic District and The Jekyll Island Club

I loved this area on Jekyll Island, and as I mentioned in my  Jekyll Island Hotels  blog post, I want to stay at the  Jekyll Island Club  on my next visit. The rich history of the Jekyll Island Club Hotel is simply iconic!

Transport your family to another era by exploring the  Jekyll Island Historic District  (240 acres) and the Jekyll Island Club on your trip to the island. Wander through historic cottages, museums, and vibrant gardens that tell the story of Jekyll Island’s rich past. You can engage your kids with tales of the island’s glamorous history, making history come alive for the whole family.

The 60-minute  Jekyll Island guided trolley tour  is an excellent option if you have little ones and want to minimize walking. The tram tour starts at the Mosaic Jekyll Island Museum. It includes entry into a historic cottage and admission into the Mosaic Gallery and Faith Chapel.

Additionally, a  Jekyll Island horse and carriage tour  departs from the Jekyll Island Club area as well! This is a pretty magical experience and one of the most unique things to do on Jekyll Island with kids.

And make sure to eat lunch or dinner at one of the restaurants at the  Jekyll Island Club . I loved eating out at The Wharf along the water so much that we did it twice. Abby and Jake want me to tell you that there is a candy store, too!

5. Beaches: Sun, Sand, and Surf

One of the best ways to truly enjoy quality time with your family is just to relax and be together. A day at the beach is a perfect way to accomplish this. Plus, it’s one of the best free things to do on Jekyll Island with kids!

Jekyll Island boasts 10 miles of unspoiled coastline. Its pristine beaches invite families to unwind and play beneath the  Georgia  sun. Build sandcastles, look for seashells, or splash in the gentle waves. The island’s family-friendly beaches provide a perfect setting for relaxation and endless seaside fun. Enjoying a day at the beach is one of our favorite outdoor activities!

For a complete list of Jekyll Island beaches,  click here .

Also, located near St. Andrews Beach, you will find the  Wanderer Memorial . I recommend you take the time to walk the Wanderer Memory Trail on the way to the beach. While a somber look at Georgia’s history, it was educational and eye-opening for our entire family. It tells the story of one of America’s last known slave ships, the Wanderer, that came ashore illegally in 1858 with more than 400 enslaved Africans.

6. Make A Splash At Summer Waves Water Park

Cool off from the Georgia heat at the  Summer Waves Water Park . Packed with thrilling water slides, lazy rivers, and splash zones, this water park guarantees a day of family-friendly excitement. Watch your kids enjoy the aquatic adventures and create cherished memories under the sun.

This park is seasonal and is only open during the summer months. So, plan accordingly.

7. Jekyll Island Miniature Golf

Located at the island’s center, across from Great Dunes Park,  Jekyll Island Mini Golf  is home to two 18-hole putt-putt golf courses, one for beginners and one for more advanced. While it lacks some of the bells and whistles of new and modern courses in the big, popular beach towns, the nostalgia here is 10/10.

8. Biking Around Jekyll Island On The Jekyll Island Trail System

If your kids are old enough to bike, exploring Jekyll Island on two wheels unveils a world of natural beauty and historical richness unrivaled.

Jekyll Island Trail System , the island’s network of biking trails, offers an immersive and eco-friendly way to experience its diverse landscapes. As you pedal along the paved paths, surrounded by maritime forests, salt marshes, and scenic ocean vistas, you’ll discover the true essence of Jekyll Island’s coastal charm. In fact, Trip Advisor rates the trail system as the  #1 thing to do on Jekyll Island  with a 5-star average review!

The well-maintained trails are suitable for riders of all ages and skill levels, providing a family-friendly adventure that allows you to set your own pace and savor the island’s unique atmosphere. Moreover, cyclists can easily navigate between the island’s most iconic attractions, including Driftwood Beach, the Historic District, and the  Georgia Sea Turtle Center , all while enjoying the gentle ocean breezes.

9. Shop, Dine, and Relax on Jekyll Island

As you can see, there isn’t an overabundance of expensive touristy attractions on Jekyll Island. The pace is slower, and the island offers an opportunity to savor precious time with your loved ones.

The only other thing I want to point out is the great dining options (many with live music) and some opportunities to shop. On our recent trip, we ate at Torguga Jacks, The Whart at the  Jekyll Island Club , Zachry’s near the Jekyll Harbor Marina, Wee Pub Beach, Harry’s Lounge at  The Westin , and others. Everything was unique, and the small-town hospitality was appreciated!

The Jekyll Island Beach Village area is a great place to spend a few hours. I recommend going here toward the start of your trip if you aren’t staying at one of the hotels within walking distance, such as the Westin Jekyll Island. There is a great little grocer, the Jekyll Market, and several shops offering wine/beer. It’s a great chance to pick up essentials for your trip. Furthermore, the Village Green space at the center of this shopping district is a fun place for kids to run around, and there is beach access right there as well!

Other Things To Do On Jekyll Island

Since this post is curated for families, I left out a few activities geared more toward adults. Some are activities that we have yet to try ourselves, so I don’t feel 100% comfortable including them in my Jekyll Island must-dos, such as Gatorology at Horton’s Pond. So, if you have done any of these, leave me a comment and let me know if you enjoyed them!

Here are some more things to do on Jekyll Island;

  • Jekyll Island Golf Club
  • Mosaic Jekyll Island History Museum
  • Horton’s Pond
  • Faith’s Chapel
  • Deep Sea Fishing
  • 4H Tidelands Nature Center
  • Horton’s House

Plan Your Visit to Jekyll Island With Kids

Jekyll Island is a place that everyone should visit at least once!

First, determine where you want to stay. There are plenty of Jekyll Island Airbnb and  VRBO  options, a dozen or so Jekyll Island Hotels, and the Jekyll Island campground. I highly recommend the  Jekyll Island Club Resort . For a complete look at the different types of accommodations on Jekyll Island,  read this post .

After booking your accommodations and airfare, if you plan to fly, you simply need to book bike rentals or a dolphin tour. And only if you want to! Actually, you can come and enjoy the island without a bunch of pre-planning and strict itineraries.

Lastly, upon arriving on Jekyll Island, consider making the  Jekyll Island Visitor Center  your first stop. This is something I do wherever we travel. These welcome centers are for people just like us. We often leave with maps, brochures, and even coupons!

Happy travels! And you can  click here  to read all of our family travel adventures!

Back to Camp

Nostalgic for those carefree summer days? Rekindle the magic with a Jekyll adventure.

By MARY LOGAN BIKOFF

Exploring the wilds of Jekyll, by yourself or led by a guide, on horseback, in a canoe, or on foot, can be as much of a kick for adults as it is for kids. With a steady stream of programs and guided adventures, a trip to Jekyll might take you back to your days at summer camp, only without the cafeteria food and early wake-up calls.

Consider this a checklist for collecting your island adventure badges …

Paddle Power

Feel like a kid again as you dip a paddle into the glittering waters around the 4-H Tidelands Nature Center and glide around the marsh searching for wildlife from herons and egrets to blue crabs and, if you’re lucky, river otters. Two- and three-hour guided kayak tours (from $65), complete with paddling instruction, take visitors through meandering tidal creeks and breezy, open waterways where guides detail the unique coastal ecosystem. Tip: A high-tide tour means access to more creeks and more bird activity; a low-tide tour means a higher likelihood of seeing frolicking dolphins and other marine creatures coming to the water’s edge to feed. Or, rent a canoe ($25 per hour or $50 per day) and set off on your own on the 17-acre Tidelands Pond, where you can cast a line for red drum and flounder. Rent fishing tackle from Tidelands ($10) or bring your own.

Overnight Adventure

If you love the idea of camping but don’t love musty cabins and whatever that is beneath your shower shoes, you’re in luck. The Jekyll Island Campground, in the midst of an upgrade and expansion, may be just what you’re looking for. The 18-acre campsite, set in an enchanting forest of palmettos and moss-draped oaks, added another 11 acres to its grounds in the past year. New amenities, including a camp store, three new bathhouses with private family restrooms, a dog park, and six glamping-style canvas-sided yurts are scheduled to open by year’s end. Currently, you can choose from 179 campsites (167 full hook-ups, from $51; 12 primitive, from $36). Tucked among the tent sites find a sanctuary with feeders that draw colorful perching birds like painted buntings and warblers. The campground is known for a relaxed camaraderie: In the evenings, mingle and gather around the campfire and roast s’mores, and in the morning take the half-mile stroll or bike ride to the fishing pier or Driftwood Beach to take in the morning sun. Or sleep in. No wakeup call here.

Wildlife Exploration

For a thrilling wildlife adventure, make a reservation for the Gatorology program, then grab your binoculars and head to Horton Pond, a hidden gem on the north end of the island. From the observation deck you’ll spot all kinds of wildlife, including almost certainly the American alligator, about 120 of which roam the waterways of Jekyll. Several, which the conservation team at Jekyll has tagged and regularly monitors, are known to frequent the waters and sunny floating platform on the pond. Feel like an island naturalist yourself watching the mysterious critter in its natural habitat and nesting site. In late summer, you might even catch a glimpse of a hatchling. Guides will get you hands-on with gator teeth and bones, research equipment, maps, photos, and even a young gator borrowed from the 4-H Tidelands Nature Center. Pet the armor-like scales on its back (“scutes”) and its ultrasoft belly skin and webbed, clawed feet, and we’ll say you’ve earned yourself that wildlife badge.

For some, summer camp meant a rare opportunity to swing a leg over the back of a horse. At Jekyll, the saddle awaits. Meet at the corral on Clam Creek Road for one of several daily rides (from $68) and climb aboard a trusty Quarter Horse or sturdy Belgian or Percheron for an hour-long guided adventure. Group rides stick to a leisurely walk, while experienced riders on private trips may be permitted to trot or canter; all rides explore maritime forests, salt marshes, and the sandy, dramatic shoreline at Driftwood Beach. Tommie Crum of outfitter Three Oaks Farm, which offers a mix of group and private horseback-riding tours, says the most popular trip is a private sunset ride. But a moonlight ride, offered in the days around the full moon, makes for a magical evening excursion, with the moon glinting off gentle waves. Want to keep your feet on the ground? Non-riders are welcome to visit the corral with apples and carrots for a fun horsey encounter.

Arts and Crafts

There’s a veritable arts colony on Jekyll, a far cry from knotting friendship bracelets and tie-dying T-shirts. The Mediterranean Revival–style Goodyear Cottage is home base for the Jekyll Island Arts Association, which welcomes artists on any level and with varying interests in creative pursuits, from woodworking to weaving. The cottage’s three floors are dedicated to working guilds, workshops, and classes. They feature studios with pottery wheels and kilns, floor looms, wood sanders, and wood planers. There’s also space for painting, needleworking, photography, and more. Annual membership ($30) grants access to seasonal classes, use of the studios and equipment, and the opportunity to display and sell works in the gallery. There’s a full catalog of classes in the winter; look out for pop-up workshops during summer months. The annual Jekyll Island Arts Festival, held in March, will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025.
