While some traditional RV rental companies have gone out of business, the rise of peer-to-peer RV rental companies means you have more options than ever to rent an RV.

What sets one company apart from the rest? Well, good RV rental companies will show you fees upfront, assure that you're getting a clean and well-maintained RV and offer insurance just in case something happens.

We dug into the best RV rental sites to give you an overview of each and make our recommendations. But first, let's review how different types of RV rental companies work.

When renting an RV, you need to decide between two main types of rental companies: traditional or peer-to-peer platforms. Here are the advantages of each type.

Pros of traditional RV rental companies

Traditional RV rental companies work similarly to rental car companies. You're renting a vehicle from a large company that owns a fleet of vehicles specifically designed to rent out to travelers like you.

That means you should have consistency across rentals — from vehicle types to cleanliness — and have assurances that the company performs regular service and inspections after each rental.

Another advantage of traditional RV rental companies is that you can do one-way rentals. If you're renting an RV directly from an owner, it's unlikely you’ll be able to return their vehicle on the other side of the country. However, that's not an issue with traditional RV companies that have locations across the country.

Pros of peer-to-peer RV rentals

Peer-to-peer RV rentals work similarly to Airbnb or Vrbo . These are platforms that connect RV owners with potential RV renters, which opens the door to less-expensive rentals and more variety. As RV owners can be located anywhere, you don't need to go to a rental company location to rent your RV. Some peer-to-peer owners will even deliver the RV to your location or campsite.

Because you're renting directly from its owner, you may encounter all kinds of RVs — including campervans, trailers, pop-up campers or even a fifth-wheel trailer. Just make sure you have an appropriate towing vehicle before renting one of these non-driveable options.

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a few RV rental companies to shut down in the U.S., including Apollo and Jucy. Now, just two long-established RV rental companies dominate the market: Cruise America and El Monte.

1. Cruise America

Between its size, many locations and easy booking process, Cruise America takes our prize as the best RV rental site for traditional rentals. Cruise America operates over 123 locations across 33 U.S. states and five Canadian provinces. Just like when renting a car, you choose your pick-up and drop-off dates, times and locations — whether round-trip or one-way.

Cruise America rentals don't include unlimited mileage, and you’ll be charged 38 cents per mile driven, though there are some promotions offering 100 free miles per day. Plus, you'll need to choose whether to rent or bring your own cooking gear and bedding kit. Cruise America offers all of these options upfront during the booking process, so you'll know exactly how much a rental will cost before you complete your reservation.

Cruise America offers five types of RV rentals that sleep between three and seven travelers. Most are Class C rentals — which is the term for drivable motorhomes, generally with a bed situated over the driving cab. If you have an appropriate towing vehicle, Cruise America also rents towable trailers that can accommodate four travelers.

2. El Monte

El Monte has just 27 U.S. locations plus one international location in Tokyo. That makes El Monte the smaller, slightly older version of Cruise America. El Monte's booking process isn't as sleek, and we have found that there aren't as many options for one-way rentals.

However, there are advantages to renting from El Monte. First, El Monte doesn't charge for generator usage while Cruise America charges $3.50 per hour. That's not going to make much of a difference to your rental cost if you're mostly camping at campgrounds. However, it can really add up if you're "boondocking" — the term for staying somewhere without water, electric or sewer hookups, whether that's in a remote forest campground or parking lot.

El Monte owns a fleet of over 1,500 vehicles consisting of five types of RVs ranging from 22 feet to 33 feet long. Four of the five types are Class C RVs. However, El Monte also rents larger Class A bus-shaped RVs.

Two peer-to-peer RV rental sites currently dominate the market: RVshare and Outdoorsy. But another up-and-comer, RVezy, is nipping at their heels. Here's a look at the best RV rental sites for peer-to-peer rentals.

1. Outdoorsy

From an extensive network of RV owners to a sleek and easy-to-use search tool, Outdoorsy takes our prize as the best RV rental site. Outdoorsy boasts that it has over 1 billion days of available RV inventory across 4,800 cities and 14 countries.

Outdoorsy leverages its massive size to provide 24/7 customer support, 24/7 roadside assistance, safety checks of renters and $1 million insurance protection covering renters, owners and the RV. There's not much more you can ask from an RV rental platform.

When deciding our pick for the best RV rental site, it was a close call between Outdoorsy and RVShare. The difference came down to each company's BBB rating. Outdoorsy's 3.96 out of 5 stars customer rating bests RVshare's 3.67 out of 5 stars rating. However, both RV rental companies enjoy an A+ rating.

The first step in finding an RV rental is to figure out what type you want. Traditional RV rental companies — like Cruise America — are like the chain hotels of the RV rental space. If you're looking for a predictable rental from a large company, these are safe options. Plus, their many locations mean that you can do a one-way rental.

The promise of the open road is one of the great joys in American culture. As you plan your next road trip, consider going beyond your car and traveling by RV. 

With the recreational vehicle, aka the RV, you have a completely self-contained home on wheels. The only schedule you need to follow on a RV vacation is your own. And, yes, you can rent an RV, campervan, motorhome or travel trailer just like pretty much anything else in this use-before-you-buy world.

If you're willing to drive something big, you can have almost all the comforts of home in a RV.

Even smaller companies are feeling the love. "We've seen a huge bump in US web traffic and calls," says Carley Clegg, Marketing Content Coordinator of Escape Campervans.

What type of motorhome should you rent?

The term RV is rather generic and even misleading. The image of a massive motorhome probably comes to mind. But consider campervans, fifth-wheel trailers, pop-up campers and the like falling under this catchall. However, for this list, we'll focus exclusively on motorized vehicles.

Class A motorhomes are the largest and most spacious

Class A motor coaches are the prototypes, being the largest and most expensive that can replace a home and car for a truly nomadic experience. They range in length from 30 to 45 feet and exude the sexiness of a bus. Because of their size (usually fitting up to six people) and built-in accommodations (like a washer/dryer combo), brand-new Class A RVs start around $70,000 and can price upwards into the millions for high-end, fully customized vehicles.

Class B motorhomes are perfect for couples and easier to park

Class B RV vehicles are built on a van chassis and this is where campervans fall in. Thanks to their shorter length (20 to 25 feet), Class B RVs are more flexible in terms of parking at the RV park or campground and are surprisingly garage friendly. But there are compromises in terms of space (four people will be snug) and amenities (think pull-out kitchens and no bathroom). Class B vehicles are generally the go-to RV for solo travelers and couples.

Pricing for a new Class B RV varies greatly, because unlike a Class A or Class C -- which are manufactured for use specifically as motorhomes -- Class B vehicles can start off as a run-of-the-mill minivan with a few added amenities like a pop-up tent and hot plate, to a large cargo van customized with a galley, cabinets and toilet. For reference, a 2022 Chrysler Voyager starts at $32,115 and a basic conversion kit from companies such as  Titan Vans  start at $44,995 -- vehicle not included.

Class C motorhomes are smaller and more affordable

If you're looking at a Class C RV, that means it's a truck-based vehicle that looks the part. While Class B vehicles can be as simple as a converted high-roofline cargo or passenger van, Class C RVs are purpose-built. They have that distinct "cab-over" design. Although much smaller than a Class A, Class C motorhomes offer many similar amenities, like built-in kitchens, showers and storage. New ones range from $50,000 to $120,000 at RV dealerships. Class C RVs are best suited for families or small groups.

Where to start in terms of finding the right RV rental? Most will be peer-to-peer rentals, of which RVshare is the largest marketplace and has been around since 2012. But there are fleet direct motorhome rental companies like Cruise America, which has been in operation since 1972 and is the largest of its kind. Kampgrounds of America has a great directory for finding RV rentals near you , with listings that include local, single-location businesses and large nationwide networks. But if you're unsure of where to start when it comes to the camper rental world, check out the following list of recommended RV rental companies, based on what our research yielded about various kinds of travel plans.

Cruise America

Cruise America offers Class C motorhome rentals for RV camping that range in occupancy from three to seven people. Some peace of mind for groups and families is that all rentals come equipped with a shower, fresh water toilet, refrigerator and microwave. Beds are fixed, rather than Murphy-style pulldowns, so there's always a comfortable place to rest. Combined with Cruise Canada, the employee-owned company has 132 locations in North America, includes insurance with every rental, and provides 24-hour renter's assistance via the mobile app, online or by phone. With 12 locations across the US and Canada, Escape Campervans offers a selection of rental options with capacity for two to five people. As its name suggests, the late-model fleet (vehicles are 2012 model year or newer) consists of Class B vehicles, but with a Jeep Wrangler Sahara and Class C cab-over Ford F-150 thrown into the mix. While there are creature comforts available like a queen-sized bed and kitchenette with a pull-out stove and refrigerator, only the Class C option has a bathroom. But as a couple of buds or significant others, highway rest stops and overnight campsites are easier to manage than with a larger RV.

Many RV rentals have minimum stays, usually between three and five days. For those short on time but eager to experience RV living, Vintage Surfari Wagons is worth considering. For extended vacations or even as temporary housing, Cruise America has a separate team that specially caters to long-term camper rental requests. With the ability to tap into the 4,000-vehicle fleet, but with dedicated service regarding mobile housing needs -- leisure, corporate and reasons in between -- Cruise America will work with renters' expectations with regards to RV size, amenities and budgets.

Best RV rental company for one-way trips

RVnGO is another peer-to-peer RV campervan rental marketplace, but with a simplified and easily customizable rent search. For example, there is a dedicated checkbox for one-way rentals via the website's inventory search. Because listings will be sparse, select the maximum 300-mile range to increase available RVs within your rent pick-up location. Other companies offer one-way rentals, too, but they either are not as clear cut (i.e., pending owner approval) or limited to a specific class type. Keep in mind that RVnGO charges a daily rent insurance fee that varies from $25 to $70 based on motorhome class and another $15 per day for 24-hour roadside assistance.

Adventure Travel Sport Rentals

Best rv rental company for going off-grid.

Want to really escape from civilization? Opt for Adventure Travel Sport Rentals, whose tagline is "RVs are for sightseeing; rigs are for adventure." Although its rental location is based out of the greater Denver area, a plethora of national parks and rugged locales are easily within a day's drive. In addition to airport delivery and returns, Adventure Travel Sport offers campervans and converted SUVs that are fully equipped for off-the-grid exploring. This means in addition to beds, bathrooms, kitchens and storage, its "rigs" are also 4x4 beasts. And if you're lucky, you might find one with a manual transmission.

Know before you go.

The biggest thing to remember when RV renting? The RV lifestyle does not come cheap. "One thing first-time RV renters don't ask about, but should, is budget," says Cruise America's Smalley. "People don't do that with hotels, even though in addition to the room you're also paying for meals, parking, etc. With an RV, you need to budget for gas mileage."

In addition, fuel economy is going to be dismal. Although a Class A motorhome can have an 80 to 150-gallon fuel tank, it'll also return about 6 to 8 mpg. Class C RVs have tanks that average 40 to 80 gallons in size with a return of about 8 to 15 mpg. Class B are the smallest at about 25 gallons, but have roughly the same fuel economy as Class C vehicles. Keep in mind that RVs can be equipped with either a diesel or gasoline engine, which will not only affect mileage, but prices at the pump as well.

Speaking of mileage, as mentioned above, not all rentals include unlimited miles. Especially when renting from peer-to-peer sites like RVshare and RVnGO, don't skim over the owner-listed details too quickly. Some may offer a maximum daily limit (usually 100 miles), which may or may not be included in your rate. Excess mileage is usually a minimum 25 cents per mile, but will increase based on the RV class type. But discounts may be available during slower travel months. This isn't a nickel-and-dime-scheme, either, but necessary revenue to cover the costs of maintenance and, to a smaller extent, minimize abuse.

Rolling around the country in a giant, plush RV will create memories, but be prepared for pricey gas station visits.

Things you're less likely to fret about are rent insurance, customer assistance and licensing. Most RV rental companies have basic insurance included in the price of the rental. But it's not a bad idea to check with your personal auto insurance provider regarding your coverage, either. And 24-hour support is a given as well. Renters can contact their rental company for all kinds of RV support from troubleshooting, campsite locations and roadside help.

As for driving the RV, the threshold for any special certification like a commercial driver's license is 26,000 pounds. Because the vast majority of RV rentals weigh less than that, a valid standard driver's license will pass muster throughout the US. "Many people think that when renting a Class A RV you'll need a special license, however, you can rent any RV on our site with a standard driver's license," says Vija Viksne, RVnGO marketing director. It's worth noting, though, that some Class A RVs can indeed weigh as much as 30,000 pounds. If you're renting something that big and that fancy, you're going to need the matching license to boot.

Currently, states requiring a CDL to drive a 26,000-pound-plus rig are: Arkansas, Connecticut, Hawaii, Kansas, New Mexico and Wisconsin, plus Washington, DC. A noncommercial special driver's license is required in California, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas and Wyoming. Thinking of driving an RV through Canada? As long as you meet the licensing requirements of your issuing state, you're free to move about the country.

Unless you're renting a RV that weighs more than 26,000 pounds, your normal driver's license will be sufficient.

RVshare spokesperson Maddi Bourgerie recommends conducting a detailed walk-through with the owner. "Things like operating the generator, electrical hookups and dumping the water tanks are all crucial to using the RV and need to be done properly," she says. "Even things that seem simple might be a little tricky. It's important to read carefully any manuals provided by the owner and ask as many questions as you have."

The RV lifestyle offers almost unlimited freedom to explore without limiting who can take part in the adventure. Wheelchair accessible and ADA-compliant RVs are available and can be indicated using inventory search filters.

With many of us eager to get out of the house and just go somewhere , an RV can be that foreign yet familiar escape during these stressful, uncertain times. "The great thing about an RV is that you can rent the exact type specific for your trip," adds Viksne. So, make a budget, pack your bags and hit the road.

The potential downside: Just as you would with an Airbnb, you’re renting from “normal people,” so your rental might not be as shiny and clean as you might get from a professional fleet.

Best of all, there’s a ton of choices: Camper Travel Bookings acts as an aggregator of sorts, meaning that it partners with other rental companies like El Monte to provide a showcase for their vehicles.

If you need help narrowing down all your options, the company’s customer service team is efficient and friendly — just keep in mind that you’ll need to work with the hiring company directly for any issues you might have, so make sure you rent from someone with a solid reputation.

Best Traditional Rental : Cruise America

If you’re after a more traditional rental experience, Cruise America might be the way to go. Similar to renting a car, you simply pick your vehicle from one of five sizes that they offer. With more than 130 locations in the U.S., there’s a solid chance there’s one somewhat close to you. Pro tip: Rental locations are especially prevalent in popular tourist destinations and national parks.

Because this is a corporate company, you might not find spectacular deals or any quirky, vintage trailers. What you will find, however, are new vehicles ready for you to take out on the road, along with some of the company’s seasonal discounts. Expect a more traditional renting process too, meaning that you should read over any extra fees, especially per-mile ones, as those can really add up over time. You'll also need to rent living essentials separately, including kitchen items and bedding, if you’re not bringing your own.

Similar to Outdoorsy, RV Share allows those with RVs to rent vehicles to people who need them — and it’s actually the biggest player in this section of the market. It has an added bonus, too: Not only does it facilitate peer-to-peer rentals, but RV dealerships will also list vehicles they’re offering for rent, so you can drive something shiny and new if you’d prefer (this can be handy if you’re thinking about buying one).

The price of renting from RVezy is going to be comparable to what you mind find on other platforms. That said, because they offer one of the best insurance and roadside assistance products in the business, you’re likely to end up spending a little more.

In the end, you get what you pay for!

RVshare is another peer-to-peer RV rental company. While its business model is similar to Outdoorsy, RVshare has a few differences in their RV rental platform.

RVshare is actually the largest online peer-to-peer RV network. You will find many RV owners listing their vehicles on both Outdoorsy and RVshare.

In addition to individual RV owners, the RVshare site also allows RV dealerships to list their own vehicles for rent. This is a nice option if you are thinking of buying an RV and want a long “test drive.”

On the positive side, however, the company often runs seasonal deals. If you time things right and book offseason, you can often find great deals. RV Rentals Delivered and Setup at Your Campsite (Cost and Expert Tips)

Do you want to go glamping in an RV but want the experience to be as stress-free as possible?   An RV offers the comfort of home but driving and setting it up can be a steep learning curve. Plus, towing a travel trailer can be tricky and it’s easy to damage your own vehicle and the camper.  If you don’t want to drive an RV or tow a travel trailer, having an RV delivered and set up at your campsite is an excellent option! 

We rent out our travel trailer and have delivered it for our renters.  In addition, we are part of groups with thousands of RV owners who rent out their rigs.  I’ll tell you about how much it will cost to have an RV delivered.  Then, make sure to read the list of questions you must ask before having a camper delivered.   After helping my own renters and reading through all the issues of other RV owners, I want to help you avoid any expensive problems that could ruin your vacation. 

Can you have an RV delivered to a campsite?

An RV can be delivered and set up at a campsite for $50 to $200.  The delivery fee generally includes a flat fee plus an additional per-mile cost. For example, RV delivery may cost between $50 to  $150 for the first 50 to 100 miles. Some companies will deliver for an additional $1 to $3 per mile after the flat fee. 

Why Have an RV Delivered and Setup at a Campsite

When you arrive at your campsite you can enjoy camping right away without all the work of setting up the RV.  If you have a camper delivered, the owner will set everything up for camping. They will hook up the connections to electricity, water, and sewer. You will not have to make any electrical box connections or deal with the yucky sewer hoses. 

In addition, the camper will be level and stable for you. The owner will lower the stabilizing jacks and make sure the camper is completely level. To a newbie, this may not seem like a big deal, but if your camper is not level many accessories might not work properly.

You will still need to learn to run all of the necessary equipment in the camper. But don’t worry any owner who delivers already has this in the arrangement.  (More about this in the FAQ section below)

You will likely meet the owner at the campsite, with your new home already set up for you. They will then walk you through a tour and give you in-depth training on how to work all of the accessories and appliances that make having an RV so comfy. You will learn things like how to start the gas propane stove, turn on the TV, convert the dinette into a bed for extra sleeping, and work the toilet.

Some campgrounds may already have travel trailers set up on site.  You can simply call and reserve a camper. When you arrive everything will be set up and you’ll be glamping in no time.

Cost of Having an RV Delivered and Set-Up

An RV can be delivered and set up at a campsite for a flat fee plus an additional per-mile cost. For example, RV delivery may cost between $50 to  $150 for the first 50 to 100 miles. Some companies will deliver for an additional $1 to $3 per mile after the flat fee. 

The cost to have an RV delivered and set up for you at your campsite will be between $50 and $300.

Here are examples of RVs that you can have delivered to a campground, the distance and the cost.

Have an RV delivered to Yosemite National Park

For example, you can have a Travel Trailer delivered and set up at Yosemite National Park for $100. This 25 foot Jayco travel trailer sleeps 7 and is only 25 feet long. With its short length, it can fit in the National Park campgrounds. The rental rate is only $115 a night plus fees and insurance. This is less than many hotels near the entrance of the park.

How to Have an RV Delivered to Your Campsite

Having an RV delivered to your campsite requires finding an RV near your destination that is deliverable. Many popular locations may have companies that deliver RVs. Our best recommendation is to find an RV on Outdoorsy that can be delivered.

Head over to the Outdoorsy website and you enter your destination. This will bring up a page with all the RVs available near your destination.

Then you can filter by RVs that you can have delivered. Choosing the “deliverable” filter will narrow down your search.

You can read through the different options and click on one that you are interested in. Once you click, you will see the option to deliver and you will get the cost of delivery.

Before jumping in and reserving an RV to be delivered at a campsite you will want to know some information from the owner. In addition to everything you should ask before renting an RV, It is important that you ask these questions before having a travel trailer delivered.

Important Questions to Ask Before Having an RV Delivered

What is the total camper delivery and set-up fee.

In general, owners will charge a base delivery and set up fee for up to a certain distance. For example, an owner may charge you $100 to deliver to a campsite within 50 miles. The fee should include both delivery and pick up. (Remember this is 2 round trips for the owner).  In addition, some owners will be willing to deliver even further for a per-mile fee. This fee ranges from $.50 per mile to $3 or more per mile.

Is Setting-up the RV Included in the Fee?

The whole point of having a travel trailer delivered and set up is so that you can be glamping in minutes. I suggest double-checking that the delivery fee also includes setting up the travel trailer.  The owner should level the rig, open up the slides, hook up the electrical, water, and sewer before you arrive.

Does the Delivery Fee Include Dumping and Flushing the Tanks?

After using a camper, the black and gray water tanks need to be dumped and cleaned.  You clean the black water tank by flushing it with clean water. If the camper is at a full hookup site, the tanks can be cleaned with a separate hose at the same water spigot. Otherwise, the trailer will need to be taken to the dump station and the tanks flushed.

I have seen some owners charge an additional fee for flushing the tanks even when they are picking up the trailer. Just make sure to ask if the fee includes this service or if this service is an additional cost.

Does the Campground Allow Rental RVs to be Delivered?

Due to insurance purposes, some campgrounds do not allow rental RVs to be delivered without the renter onsite. Don’t worry, the owner will frequently know the rules about local campgrounds. In order to have your rental RV at the campsite, you will need to meet the owner outside and be with the owner at check-in.  They will still park the RV and get everything set up for you. You will also get full training on operating and enjoying your rental.

Final Thoughts on Making Your Vacation Easier with an RV Delivery

Having an RV delivered and set up at a campsite is an excellent idea.   Many RVs are located within a delivery distance from some of the best national parks. You will not have to worry about driving, parking, or hooking everything up. In fact, some owners require that they deliver their rigs.

Blacksford RV Enters Arizona Market

Blacksford RV Rentals is expanding to a third location. The company anticipates its Phoenix location to open Oct. 1.

The organization has locations in Bozeman, Montana and Las Vegas. The company said its rental numbers have been doubling in the last year.

Blacksford General Manager Jeff Onuoye said the company provides an avenue for consumers to experience national parks.

He said, “We know that our location in Phoenix will extend Blacksford’s ability to give so many more people that unique experience.”

The Phoenix location will provide proximity to destinations such as the Antelope Canyon in Lechee, Arizona; Grand Canyon National Park; Lake Powell; Monument Valley; Page, Arizona; Route 66, Flagstaff; Sedona, Flagstaff and Petrified Forest National Parks.

The rental company stocks Type C Winnebago and Thor motorhomes. Blacksford’s services include airport pick-up/drop-off, 24-hour-7-days-a-week assistance and generator use.

Blacksford CEO Becky Goodell said the organization’s services “will fill an important gap in the Phoenix RV rental market for hundreds of first-time and experienced RVers.”

South carolina launches state investigation into island watersport rental company.

Sea Monkeys Watersports, within the Hilton Head Harbor Marina, is under investigation by SCDNR for allegedly failing to report an accident involving one of their rentals

Sea Monkeys Watersports, within the Hilton Head Harbor Marina, is under investigation by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources for allegedly failing to report an accident involving one of their rentals.

In a video sent to WJCL 22 by an anonymous viewer, witnesses say the owner of the rental company, Neil Turner, along with six others, carting a young male to a red truck with injuries from a waterskiing accident. The same witnesses say they did not see any police or ambulance arrive on the scene.

Greg Lucas, with SCDNR, says the incident happened May 29. Agency officers were alerted of the incident on June 4, six days after the incident.

According to SCDNR, South Carolina law requires rental agencies to report accidents:

• Without injuries within seven days.
• Involving injuries within 24 hours.
• Involving injuries with great bodily injury immediately.

In a statement to WJCL 22, Lucas says in part:

"We have charged the company that rented the jet ski for failure to report an accident with injuries. If found guilty, it carries a fine of $100-$500 and suspension of boating privileges for a year."

WJCL 22 News' AJ Sisson attempted to reach the owner of Sea Monkeys Watersports and the owner of Lowcounty Ferry LLC., Turner, for comment on the charges the company faces but has not heard a response.

SCDNR says the investigation is still ongoing.

What do I need to rent a car?

When you’re booking the car, you just need a debit or credit card.

At the rental counter, you’ll need:

• Your passport
• Your voucher
• Each driver’s driving licence
• The main driver’s credit card (some rental companies also accept debit cards, but most don’t).

Important: Please make sure you check the car’s rental terms as well, as each rental company has its own rules. For example? They might need to see some extra ID. They might not accept certain types of credit card. Or they might not rent to any driver who hasn’t held their driving licence for 36 months or more.

It also includes any extras you’ve already added (e.g. GPS or baby seats).

It doesn’t include any extra cover you buy when you get to the rental counter.
