The record is now his 14th Number One solo album, seeing him overtake Elvis Presley to become the solo artist with the most UK Number One albums ever.

The Beatles are now the only act with more UK Number One albums than Williams, having scored 15 across their career.

Williams also recently shared his ambition to return to Glastonbury to take on the coveted legends slot . “Yeah, that’d be cool. Actually, I’d like to do that,” he said during an appearance on BBC Breakfast . “I’d like another go round on that stage and feel that audience and get the chance to do it.

“[Glastonbury has] never really been on my radar, and obviously [I’ve] not been on their radar, either. But now I’m like, ‘Yeah, I wanna do that’.”

Robbie Williams on new album ‘XXV’ and 25 years of solo fame

As robbie prepares to release a reworking of his hits with the metropole orkest, he looks back on 25 years of fame.

By Alma Rota

Robbie Williams, 2022

Robbie Williams became an international pop star at 16 with Take That and could have easily keep going with this nice and clean image. Yet, it would be foolish to believe that the 47-year-old lad had only this to offer. Robbie had a real temper, ambitions and an innate talent of a showman. He launched his successful solo career twenty five years ago, sweeping away his image of a 90s teenage pop idol, changed his public to a more adult one and imposed himself sometimes as a flamboyant pop star. As he prepares to release his XXV album, which revisits his greatest hits with the Metropole Orkest, the pop icon speaks with Rolling Stone France .

You’re celebrating 25 years of your solo career by releasing a re-orchestrated recap entitled XXV. How was this project born?

I’ve already done a Greatest Hits package but I wanted it to have another life. Jules Buckley, a talented conductor and arranger, showed me what he could do with the songs and I was blown away with it. The opportunity to work with an orchestra felt like a great idea.

On the album cover you appear as Rodin’s Thinker, the poet who meditates in front of Hell’s door. What have you been meditating about ?

I have been meditating about how awkward I feel socially, how uncomfortable I find crowds of people and how awkward I feel in general around other human beings, outside of being with my family. Once my life was governed by the discomfort generated from my psyche. It’s not as bad as it ever was but it’s still not in the place that I would like it to be. I’ve also been thinking about my state and the state of the world, wanting to be on the right side of history as it is created, not feeling quite comfortable with what we are being asked to do and how to think and how to live. I’ve also been meditating on how to keep being creative and facilitate this wonderful life that I’ve created for my family.

You expose yourself naked on the album cover, is it your provocative side again or are we finally going to know the whole truth about Robbie Williams?

It’s provocation I suppose. It’s unusual for a middle-aged man to be naked anywhere especially in public and when it comes to record sleeves, it’s not my wheelhouse. If you’re a pop star and you want your record to be successful, the best advert for that record, to let people know that it exists, is your own image. I find my own image boring and I don’t like looking at it so when it comes to be creative presenting that image I kind of put my head in the sand. The art director Tom Hingston, who has done a lot of my albums, came up with this idea and it ticked a lot of boxes:  it’s both provocative and interesting!

Your nudity reveals your numerous tattoos. Could you choose two to tell us a little bit about yourself?

There is a Keith Haring UFO and pyramid on my arm because I’m very much interested in the esoteric, the paranormal and some of the secrets that are undisclosed. I also love Art and Keith Haring! Another one is the silhouettes on my right forearm. They represent two comedians (his showbiz idols Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise) because they are the ones who entertained me and made me feel safe when I was a kid. That’s who I wanted to be when I grew up. I wanted to be a personality like them, not so much a rock and roll star or singer. I wanted to be an entertainer! I define myself as an entertainer who makes up melodies and writes lyrics. When I’m with musicians or other singers, I don’t feel as I belong to them. I am more like TV personalities or comedians. They are my kind of people.

Which artists have been major influences to you?

People with big personalities, people you live vicariously through: daredevils and eccentrics, provocative and controversial people. It’s not just one person. Everything and everybody has been an inspiration but above all, I wanted to be like the people living in the margins, outside of the law. But you cannot live like that forever because you just die. Right now my biggest inspiration is my wife and my kids. I want to facilitate an incredible life for them and I get to do that in a job that I love doing.

Throughout your career, you have experimented with different styles of music; do you have a favourite one that you feel more in tune with?

My love for music is eclectic and I completely inhabit each individual style of music. This is what I love the most. When I was growing up, I wanted to be a Mod but I also wanted to be a rocker, a B-boy who was into hip-hop, a new romantic. I didn’t’ want be a goth so much but I do now. I wanted to be all of these things. My love for all of the music is honest when I’m in that moment. There are so many genres that I want to embrace and make my own. I have recently done three DJ gigs in Ibiza. Dance music was a big part of my life. When I was 16 or 17, I went out raving. That’s another part of the musical palette that I inhabit right now.

You’re a great fan of Motörhead and Lemmy Kilmister, would you try metal music?

I don’t think that is on the cards but you never know.

Looking back on your life, do you have any remorse or regrets?

People always say no regrets, but it’s rubbish. There are things I regret but nothing that I want to talk about right now. If you have no regrets, your life is unexamined and there is a saying that a life unexamined is not worth living  and I believe in that. So in a life that is examined, you must have regrets or you didn’t do enough in this lifetime!

Which advice would you give today to younger Robbie?

Maybe I would tell him stay off carbohydrates. I would also tell him to dream bigger… with no carbs (laughs)

After 25 years of your career, where do you stand on the issue of censorship?

I’m glad we lived in a time when we were kings for many different reasons: The record industry was classic, stars were stars and records were physical. Even with CDs, there was a journey to be made to acquire things that made them very special! Running alongside with this there were artists that were eccentric, odd, out of the ordinary. They were allowed to get things wrong, to get things right, to be obnoxious, to be sweet or difficult. This made the landscape exotic and interesting and I think it lifted people above the ordinary.

Now you are not allowed to have an opinion, to get something wrong. There are new rules that now make you be on the wrong side of history and it’s appalling, it’s beige, it’s boring! I would say that (before the pendulum swings back the other way because it will) there is a death of creativity because we are not allowed to free think anymore. We have a hive mind and if you are not thinking with the hive mind you’re going to get cancelled; you won’t be allowed to make money as a public figure. It is very scary andI’m glad that I have lived in a time when that did not exist because it was way more fun!

What about football?

I love football and I will always love it! It’s the working class meditation.

What about Britain?

I’ve been out of Britain for so long. I am definitely British but I have lived in a bubble since I was 16. I’m outside of the tribe. I cannot pass judgement on Britain because I don’t know what it is anymore. I don’t experience what it is to be truly British on a day-to-day basis because fame excommunicates you from normal living.

Would you say fame has stolen something from you?

For a while it did because it was overpowering and I did not understand why it was making me feel the way that it made me feel. But it has been is giving me tremendous amounts too! One you realise you can’t have your cake AND eat it, it becomes easier to deal with.

What do you wish for the next 25 years?

I’d like to be able to have more opportunities. I love having the oxygen to turn up at a meeting and have people say yes to my ideas. And I’ve got so many ideas that to carry on being facilitated is really important to me and my family and it is really important to my ego too because without people saying yes to me who am I?

Did the pandemic inspire you with new material?

There is a bottleneck of ideas! I wrote so many songs, came up with so many ideas for films, TV, business! Covid was a very creative time!

So there is a new album cooking?

Yes, more than one!

If you had to choose one of the songs on this album that would speak about you and that you could recommend to someone to get to know you?

I would say Feel . Which one would you choose?

The Road to Mandalay …I think it tells a lot about your and your life journey.

That is strange because when you asked the question, the first song that came to my mind was the Road to Mandalay and then I changed it to Feel. I don’t know why but The Road to Mandalay is my final answer for 64,000 pounds Chris! (Laughs).

When is Robbie Williams' album 'XXV' released?

Robbie's album 'XXV' was released on 9th September and features some of the singer's biggest hits re-recorded, with Metropole Orkest.

The 'Rock DJ' singer shared news of his brand new album on Instagram saying: 'My new album XXV is out on September 9th. The album consists of re-recorded and newly orchestrated versions of my greatest hits recorded with the Metropole Orchestra, alongside a few surprises. I can’t wait to share it with you. RW x'.

What songs are on Robbie Williams' album 'XXV'?

Before it was released, Robbie confirmed all of the songs on his new album as well as releasing 'Angels', and a new video on YouTube. The black and white video shows a full orchestra accompanying Robbie as he sings his 1997 Top 5 single.

Now take a look at Robbie Williams through the years:

1989: career beginnings with take that.

Starting with a line-up of five young men, Take That consisted of Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, Mark Owen, Jason Orange and Robbie Williams, with the original (short lived) name of Kick It.

1991: Early days in the band

Take That's original line-up of Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, Mark Owen, Jason Orange and Robbie Williams. Thankfully they changed their name and after a few unsuccessful songs in the early 90s Take That's breakthrough hit 'It Only Takes A Minute' was released. The song was a cover of a 1975 song by Taveres and reached Number 7 in the charts.

1992: Take That in their prime

In 1992 Take That had hits with 'A Million Love Songs' and 'Could It Be Magic'. The boys' follow-up single 'Could It Be Magic' quickly propelled them to super-stardom with a string of number 1s not far away. Take That's success continued in 1993 with 'Pray', 'Relight My Fire' (featuring Lulu) and 'Babe'.

1994: BRITs performance

The band's success continued in 1994 with 'Everything Changes' and 'Sure'. Here they are performing at The BRITs 1994.

1995: Robbie left Take That

However, in July 1995 after countless hits, fans heard the devastating news; Robbie Williams would be leaving the band following friction with other band members. Robbie later admitted in a TV documentary in 2005, that he did some "stupid stuff" after parting ways with the band over 20 years ago, but said he didn't regret it because he was young. In 1997, Robbie released his first album 'Life Thru a Lens'. The album included the single, 'Angels' which is still his best-selling single of all time.

2000: 'Rock DJ' and BRIT Award win

At the start of the millennium Robbie released his third solo album, 'Sing When You're Winning'. The album included the single 'Rock DJ' which had quite a controversial music video. The video involved Robbie trying to impress a group of women by stripping down but, when the clothes didn't work he starts removing his skin and muscle until he's just a dancing skeleton. Many TV networks edited the video because of this. However, the single was still a great success with it being the UK's fourth-best selling single of 2000. The song also went on to win best British single and best music video of the year at the BRIT Awards as well as best special effects at the VMAs.

2001: Swing album

Having grown up loving the music of Frank Sinatra, Robbie went in a new musical direction in 2001 when he released the album 'Swing When You're Winning'. With the title being a pun on his previous album, Robbie called 'Swing While You're Winning' "the big band album he had always dreamed of making". The album includes guest performances from Rupert Everett, Nicole Kidman, Jon Lovitz and Jane Horrocks as well as Frank Sinatra posthumously duetting with Robbie. Despite not being his usual style, the album was still a success and made it to Number 1 on the UK albums chart.

2002: EMI deal

In 2002 Robbie signed a whopping £80 million deal with EMI which was the biggest music deal for a British artist. The record was only broken in 2016 by Adele. The deal included a promise from EMI that they'd help him break into the United States. While his next album, 'Escapology', did perform better internationally than his previous albums, it still didn't perform as well as he'd hoped in the US.

2005: Move to LA

From the mid noughties Robbie Williams started calling Los Angeles home, early on he started his own football club called Los Angeles Vale F.C. The club played in the LA premiere league in Santa Monica. The team is named after his hometown club, Stoke-on-Trent's Port Vale F.C.

2006: The 'Close Encounters' Tour

In 2006, Robbie embarked on his 'Close Encounters' Tour where he performed over 50 shows across the globe. The tour got him into the Guinness Book of World Records after he sold a whopping 1.6 million tickets in a single day!

2009: 'Reality Killed The Video Star'

In 2009 Robbie was back with his eighth studio album, 'Reality Killed the Video Star'. The album included the singles 'Bodies', 'You Know Me' and 'Morning Sun'. While the album still managed to sell over a million copies in Europe, it wasn't enough to land the top spot on the UK album charts, coming second place to JLS' debut album.

2010: Take That reunion

Robbie Williams made an unexpected return to the Take That in 2010, joining forces with Gary Barlow - the first time since 1995 - with the song 'Eight Letters' appearing on later albums by both Take That and Robbie - 'Progress' and 'Take the Crown'. Then, later that year, the news that all Take That fans had been waiting for was confirmed, the original line-up would be reforming for the wildly successful album, 'Progress' and its live tour. Their lead single 'The Flood' was released and peaked at Number 2 featuring both Gary and Robbie as lead vocals.

2012: Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee

In 2012 Robbie took part in the celebration of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee, celebrating her 60 years on the throne. Robbie was the opening act of a concert held in the gardens of Buckingham Palace to commemorate the anniversary.

2013: 'Swings Both Ways'

Robbie returned to the world of swing with his second album in the genre, 'Swings Both Ways'. The album included some original songs written by Robbie, Guy Chambers, and Chris Heath, as well as some covers of some classics including The Jungle Book's 'I Wan'na Be Like You' and The Wizard of Oz's 'If I Only Had a Brain'. The album includes duets with Olly Murs, Michel Bublé, and Kelly Clarkson.

2018: FIFA opening ceremony performance

In the summer of 2018, Robbie performed at the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup that took place in Moscow, Russia. During the performance he sang some of his greatest hits that included 'Let Me Entertain You', and 'Angels'.

2018: The X Factor judging panel

Later on in 2018, it was announced that Robbie would be joining the judging panel of the 15th series of the X Factor on ITV. Robbie was one of three new judges on the panel joining Simon Cowell, the other two were his wife, Ayda Field, and former One Direction member Louis Tomlinson.

2019: The Boy In The Dress

In 2019 Robbie co-wrote the music for the musical adaption of David Walliams' The Boy in the Dress along with Guy Chambers. The musical was produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company and premiered in Stratford-Upon-Avon in late 2019. The show was due to transfer to the Savoy Theatre in London's West End in Autumn 2020, but the Coronavirus pandemic has put those plans on halt.

2019: 'The Christmas Present'

Robbie released his first ever Christmas album in November 2019 called 'The Christmas Present'. The album had some original songs along with some festive classics such as 'Winter Wonderland' and 'The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)'. The album features guest performers including Helene Fischer, Rod Stewart, and Tyson Fury. The album made it to Number 1 in the UK charts during its second week and knocked Robbie up to joint-second place with Elvis Presley for number of number one albums in the UK.

2020: Lockdown Take That reunion

Robbie reunited with Take That for a very special performance in May 2020 during the lockdown amid the global pandemic of Coronavirus, performing a 40-minute set.

XXV (Deluxe Edition)

Arriving 25 years to the month since the release of his debut solo album Life Thru a Lens, Robbie Williams’ XXV surveys his first quarter-century as a solo artist by reupholstering a clutch of his hits with Dutch jazz and pop orchestra Metropole Orkest. Plenty of those songs—“Feel,” “Come Undone,” “Angels”—were built with aerodynamic choruses that beg to be lifted a little further and higher by some orchestral thermals, so it’s no surprise that this proves to be a successful and satisfying venture. It’s not just a case of bolting (more) strings and brass onto the tracks, though. With the assistance of longtime collaborators Guy Chambers and Steve Sidwell, plus conductor Jules Buckley, arrangements are deconstructed, tempos tweaked, and lyrics rethought to bring new tones and perspectives to some pop gems. Originally a frustrated parting swipe at his former Take That bandmates, “No Regrets” gets added drama with bracing stabs of noise from the orchestra. It’s all in the service of reconciliation, though, as Williams changes the final line from “I guess the love we once had is officially dead” to “I guess the love we once had is officially undead.” The Metropole Orkest keep themselves to a gentle shimmer while “She’s the One” is reworked into a meditative country ballad, and Williams betrays the wisdom of age and experience on “Come Undone,” where the line “I’m not scared of dying, I just don’t want to” rings with more defiance and less despair than it once did. As for clues about where Williams will head over the next 25 years, the suggestion to be drawn from the four new tracks here is that he’ll retain his sense of musical adventure, arched-eyebrow wit, and the lessons of a life lived. The orchestral pop of “Lost” and “The World and Her Mother” takes a rueful look back on wilder days, while “More Than This” is heart-swelling pop-rock that offers an arm around the shoulder in dark times. “Disco Symphony” is everything the title suggests—a strings-assisted trip to the dance floor that begins, “Another floor filler from your tortured singer/You’ve been singing other songs but I’ll forgive ya.” Twenty-five years on, there’s clearly more to come.

Robbie Williams XXV Tour Review

As a theatre blog, it is very rare that other artworks get cupboard space in this pantry of the dramatic arts, but occasionally a performance we attend strikes a chord and we feel it deserves an honorary mention; this is that blog post. On Saturday the 15th of October 2022, I went to see former Take That bench warmer Robbie Williams perform his XXV tour at the Birmingham Resort World Arena, formerly the NEC. Before you assume my outward love of the ageing pop star and dub him my ‘guilty pleasure’, I would note the tickets were bought for my mother who fits perfectly in his target audience of ‘middle aged women’. I will now defend my experience by saying there was no guilt in the pleasure of this show!

The performance is part of a small UK tour in collaboration with his latest album XXV, which boasts alternative mixes of his best known hits, without selling out and releasing a ‘greatest hits’ compilation. Let us first deal with the support at ‘ Lufthaus’, an EDM band consisting of Tim Metcalfe, Flynn Francis and mr Robbie Williams himself; yes, Robbie William’s support act was Robbie Williams. With the size of that mans ego, would you expect any less? Though Mr Williams did not make a stage appearance during their set, Tin and Flynn tried their best to hype up the crowd by playing repetitive songs bereft of melody to a bemused audience, at the lowest point of their set a QR code appeared on the screen for the audience to download their very own Lufthaus NFT, so very very odd.

The show opened with a bit of a curveball, the song ‘Hey Wow Yeah Yeah’ from the ‘Take The Crown’ album, best known for its appearance on the Vauxhall Corsa advert recently. The moving 3D screens lifted to reveal a very simple pyramid style set, with the band adorned - the blocks used were video screens which were used to their very limits in creative stage design, a lot is to be said to the tech team on this tour who knocked it out of the park with crisp audio and an incredible light show. The song lead into the classic ‘Let Me Entertain you’, which it did from the off set, the room erupted in a sea of women in their early 50’s screaming, jumping clapping and stomping along to the classic.

“I’m Robbie Williams, this is my show, this is my arse, let me entertain you”

After the ball grabbing starter of cheesy pop, the real show began. The showman had the audience in the palm of his hand, starting with jokes about being ‘F***ked’ after performing 2 songs, call backs to his televised Nebworth show where he asked the audience to “grow old with him”, and explained the concept of the album and show. Aside from fulfilling the terms of his contract with his record label, the tour was a trip down memory lane for the last 32 years of his career, from humble beginnings of Take That and getting his bum out in their first music video, to his self destruction, going solo and leading to his sobriety.

Rather touchingly Robbie confided in his audience that he has become aware his songs fit into two categories ‘Look at me aren’t I great’ and ‘bloody hell, I’m vulnerable’, and this is down to his mental health. Most touching was his confession that 22 years ago when he had hit rock bottom, became a recluse and struggled to make friends, he found a friend in one Gerry Halliwell of the Spice Girls and wrote the song Eternity to and about her, as he sang the audience really listened to the lyrics and melody and I think this opened eyes around the arena to what a fantastic songwriter he is - Let’s not forget that last year saw the debut of Robbie’s first Musical ‘The Boy in a Dress’ adapted from the David Walliams book.

The history lesson of the life of the legend himself gave insight into how he found his voice, from leaving Take That and releasing a cover of George Michaels ‘Freedom’, in the same cheesy style expected of a Boyband. A trip to Glastonbury and time spent with Oasis inspired him to have much more guitar and drum lead tracks, and the inspiration payed off. Robbie then treated the audience to a cover of ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’ by Oasis, which surprisingly worked!

Coming closer to the present day he payed homage to his wife and 4 children, explained for the first time ever he is happy to be alive, happy to be loved and sang it all in ‘Love My Life’, one of his most recent hits. The show finished with ‘Rock DJ’, to leave the audience on a high, asking, ney, begging for more! The encore, three of his biggest selling songs ‘No Regrets’, ‘She’s the One’ and of course ‘Angels’. From start to finish the man controlled his audience, lightning whit, incomparable stage presence and a spellbinding performance.

In conclusion, like him or not, the man knows how to write a song (with 14 UK number one singles, 14 number one albums and 6 albums in the top 100 biggest selling albums), the man knows how to perform live (Guiness world record for selling 1.6 million tickets in one day in 2006) and the man knows how to have longevity in the business (with 32 years of success and has more Brit awards than any other artist with 18 awards and 39 nominations).

The concert concluded with Robbie proclaiming to the audience that there is still ‘loads more’ to come. The album XXV is on sale now, the XXV tour continues in the UK before moving to Europe next year. Celebrating 25 years since the beginning of his solo career a deluxe edition re-release of his debut album ‘Life Through A Lens’ is available for pre-order.
