jane lynch kate flannery tour 2022

Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award winning actress Jane Lynch is getting in the Christmas spirit with the release of a Christmas CD, “A Swingin’ Little Christmas”! Following a path set by her role as Sue Sylvester on the musical mega-hit TV show Glee, a successful run as Miss Hannigan in the Broadway revival of Annie, her recent turn as Mrs. Brice in Funny Girl on Broadway, and a critically acclaimed national tour of her own cabaret show Two Lost Souls with Kate Flannery, this album marks her first step as a international recording artist.

Jane didn’t come to the party alone, inviting her friends Kate Flannery (best known for her portrayal of Meredith on NBC’s The Office) and Tim Davis (vocal producer for Glee and one of the industry’s leading vocal arrangers) to join in as both featured singers and as part of a classic-sounding vocal group (under Mr. Davis’ vocal direction). The trio is accompanied by The Tony Guerrero Quintet –– a nationally recognized jazz ensemble in its own right with multiple CD releases to its credit.

“A Swingin’ Little Christmas” is unapologetically sentimental, recalling the classic Christmas albums of the 1950s and 60s. The album features fifteen tracks, including fresh takes on ten classic carols and five brand new nostalgia-inspired originals, penned by bandleader, Tony Guerrero. The disc is ripe with clever jazz arrangements, tight vocal harmonies and features a variety of instrumentations including a five-piece jazz quintet, a full big band and lush string orchestrations. Both Jane and Kate are well known for their comedic abilities, and while the album has several fun, lighthearted moments, there are also plenty of deep, rich and even serious musical moments to balance it out.

Jane Lynch’s “A Swingin’ Little Christmas” is sure to become a perennial holiday favorite!

Theater | jane lynch and kate flannery team up for ‘two lost souls’ southern california dates, the pair is scheduled to perform in beverly hills on jan. 20 and costa mesa jan. 27-29..

jane lynch kate flannery tour 2022

Actresses Jane Lynch and Kate Flannery are ready to bring their shenanigans back to the stage and in front of live, masked audiences.

The pair are booked to perform their “Two Lost Souls” cabaret show at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills on Jan. 20 and Samueli Theater at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa Jan. 27-29. And the duo already has a working knowledge of COVID protocols for live events.

“We’ve been back doing these shows since September and we did our Christmas tour in November and through December, so we’re pretty used to the COVID protocols and performing for masked crowds, but it’s been so fun and so great,” Lynch said during a recent phone interview.

As the omicron variant is causing high positive case numbers in Southern California, both venues are requiring face masks be worn indoors and proof of full COVID-19 vaccination, plus a booster shot, or a negative PCR or verifiable Antigen test within 24 hours from the performance date for attendance. (As well, it’s a good idea to check for updates with the venue ahead of events.)

Though times are still certainly uncertain, Lynch says she and Flannery have an hour and a half of laughs and music prepared, including everything from Broadway favorites to songs by Yiddish duo The Barry Sisters. The show’s title, “Two Lost Souls,” came from the musical “Damn Yankees.”

“Kate said to me, ‘Do you know “Two Lost Souls” from “Yankees?”‘ and I said, ‘Yes, let’s do that,’” Lynch recalled as the duo were originally preparing to launch the show out of The Carlyle in New York City in 2018 with musical director Tony Guerrero. “Not only that, but it was a great name for our show because we are indeed two lost souls: These two weirdos on the highway of life and we somehow found each other.”

Their paths first crossed doing improv in Chicago in the late ’80s and working together there on “The Real Live Brady Bunch” a few years later. They’ve remained friends as they’ve gone on to achieve mainstream success. Lynch is an Emmy- and Golden Globe-winner, known for her roles in TV shows like “Glee” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” as well as for hosting NBC’s “Hollywood Game Night.” Flannery has been on TV shows such as “New Girl,” “American Housewife” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” but is best known for her long-running role as Meredith on “The Office.”

And they still like collaborating. Flannery joined Lynch on her 2015 anti-cabaret, “See Jane Sing” and in 2016, they released a Christmas album, “A Swingin’ Little Christmas,” which they continue to perform during the holiday season.

With “Two Lost Souls,” Lynch said it’s a co-headlining effort where they do songs together and individually with some witty banter in between.

“It’s loosely scripted, but Kate is extremely spontaneous so I count on that,” she said. “I’m a little bit more in a cage and kind of regulate myself a lot more than she does, so there’s comedy in that, too. I’m sort of the one holding the proceedings together and she’s just going off like a crazy person.”

“We trust each other implicitly,” Lynch continued. “That’s so important when you’re on stage. Right before we go out, we do this thing we saw in a movie once where we pat each other on the back and say ‘Got your back.’ We really support each other out there and there’s just this inherent trust and you need to have that to feel safe out there. I know if I throw her the ball metaphorically, she’ll catch it and throw it back and vise versa.”

During the earlier months of the pandemic, Lynch said she kept herself busy doing voiceover work for animated features and took a lot of walks around Los Angeles just to get outside. While she has a lot of projects in the works, Lynch said she’s excited to reprise her award-winning role in Amazon Prime Video’s hit series, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” which returns for a fourth season on Feb. 18.

“That show, production-wise, encompasses the best of everything,” she said. “It’s the best writing, the best sets, the best wardrobes, the best musical score and the best actors. It’s truly the best of the best and I’m so proud to be a part of it. I love my character and the dichotomy of being Sophie Lennon on stage who is this loud, Queens housewife and then the very kind of self-satisfied elite, or she thinks she is, kind of rich lady in real life and the kind of vulnerability that’s underneath that mask. I love it and they really write to it so well. In the next season, I’m in like half of the episodes and it was so fun.”

Jane Lynch and friends are swinging by with some toe-tappin’ Christmas tunes

Jane Lynch (center) with Tim Davis and Kate Flannery. The trio will perform "A Swingin' Little Christmas" for two shows at City Winery.

Jane Lynch and Kate Flannery already had an ongoing cabaret act or two under their belts when the seed for “A Swingin’ Little Christmas” was planted. As Lynch tells it, the conception of the show and its accompanying album came from a love of the music of the season, not to mention a desire to do it on the cheap.

“We were doing a cabaret show, and we all ended up talking about our favorite Christmas music,” says Lynch. “And we thought there is nothing stopping us from doing a public domain Christmas album, where you don’t have to pay for it. It’s out there in public domain. So we proceeded to do that, and we got lost in it. We loved it.”

But as the title suggests — and as evidenced by the phrase “toe-tappin’” coming up four times over the course of our 23-minute phone conversation — the songs of “A Swingin’ Little Christmas” (which has toured since 2016 and lands at City Winery on Dec. 7-8) aren’t simply faithful re-creations of the Yuletide music of the Victorian lamplight era. With assists from singer (and “Glee” vocal arranger) Tim Davis and the Tony Guerrero Quintet, Lynch and Flannery give the songs the sheen of a more modern era. Slightly more modern, anyway.

“What brought us together about Christmas so much is that we really loved the Christmas music that we grew up with, the albums from the late ‘50s, early ‘60s, Bing Crosby and the Big Band sound, Rosemary Clooney, that sort of thing. So we are right there in that genre,” Lynch says. “We do really interesting things, I think, with those public domain Christmas songs, but they’re recognizable. It’s not like we go crazy with them and make them sound like something they’re not, because I think the thing about Christmas is recognition. It’s familiarity with the music.”

Lynch and Flannery are familiar with more than just the music. The partnership between the “Glee” and ”Hollywood Game Night” star and the tipsy worker drone from “The Office” — Flannery played Meredith — goes back decades to their time in Chicago’s Annoyance Theater and its production of “The Real Live Brady Bunch,” where Lynch played Carol and Flannery played Alice. Having performed together in one capacity or another since then, each has carved out her own role in the act.

“Kate is a brilliant singer,” Lynch says. “She’s like a studio singer from the ‘40s. She’s got such a great tone. I mainly do harmony to her stuff. I take the lead on some stuff and she takes the lead on some stuff, but basically, when we sing together, she’s the melody and I’m the harmony right underneath her.”

There’s a similar dynamic at play in their onstage rapport. “Kate is diametrically opposed to my vibe. Kate is very spontaneous and impulsive and out there, and I’m much more controlled and kind of keep us in a cage,” says Lynch. “She’s the crazy person. I’m the discipline person.”

But Lynch insists that Flannery’s loose-cannon urge to go for the joke at the expense of the sincerity of the material — an echo of Sophie Lennon, the old-hat comedian played by Lynch on “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” — is all part of the act. “That caricature of her onstage is always yukking it up, really bad Catskills humor every once in a while,” Lynch says. “And I love that about her character. But Kate is a technician. She knows what she’s doing.”

The commitment to doing what works can result in some unorthodox material for a Christmas show. Lynch and Flannery were already performing “Far From the Home I Love” in their cabaret act; in it went, because what better for Christmas than a song from “Fiddler on the Roof”?

“Right, exactly,” says Lynch. “And we do a Barry Sisters [also known as the Bagelman Sisters] interpretation. They used to perform for the Hasidic Jews of New York, and they would sing in Hebrew. So we do this all in English, but in our ‘Two Lost Souls’ show, we do ‘Bei Mir Bistu Shein’ in Yiddish. Two Irish-Catholic girls. It’s kind of a fun thing to watch, I think.”

And more than anything, that seems to be the driving motivation for “A Swingin’ Little Christmas.” Lynch has by now built up enough clout in the industry that she can essentially do whatever she wants to do just because she wants to, including the occasional touring show that largely plays intimate cabaret theaters that can’t substantially contribute to her bottom line. It’s a state of affairs that hasn’t gone unnoticed by Lynch.

“After every show, we all look at each other and go, ‘How lucky are we that we get to do this, and that we put together this really kind of perfect little show?’

“I’m a big fan of simplicity,” she says. “We don’t need a special set or anything. We’re basically just the five guys in their suits — and I’m very meticulous about how everybody looks — in their suits with their dark red ties. And then us in our dark red and black outfits, and we keep it that simple.”

Adds Lynch, “It’s not only an easy show for us to do, it’s the most satisfying thing in the world.”

Buffalo Nichols

Wednesday, September 21 at 7:00 PM

Since his earliest infatuations with guitar, Buffalo Nichols-Fat Possum's first solo blues signing in nearly 20 years-has asked himself the same question: How can I bring the blues of the past into the future? After cutting his teeth between a Baptist church and bars in Milwaukee, it was a globetrotting trip through West Africa and Europe during a creative down period that began to reveal the answer. "Part of my intent, making myself more comfortable with this release, is putting more Black stories into the genres of folk and blues," guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist Carl "Buffalo" Nichols explains. "Listening to this record, I want more Black people to hear themselves in this music that is truly theirs." That desire is embodied in his self-titled debut album, composed largely of demos and studio sessions recorded between Wisconsin and Texas.

Thursday, September 22 at 7:00 PM

What do you get when you mix a pinch of surrealism, a bit of modern folklore, a heaping helping of talharpa revival/rebellion and blend it through effect blocks and loopers? The answer is the neo-zombie-post-folk Estonian duo Puuluup! Ramo Teder (aka Pastacas) and Marko Veisson have virtually resurrected the ancient talharpa (bowed lyre), popular in Northern Europe since the early middle ages and played on Western Estonian islands until the beginning of the 20th century. But this is not an ethnomusicological romp. Puuluup directs the vibrations of the talharpa's horsehair strings through effects, using alternative bowing and rhythm techniques. The mellow signs of talharpa are paired with electronically amplified echoes, knicks, creaks, and crackles, while still maintaining the instrument's natural sound. And it is all presented with a unique sense of humor, originality, and what can only be described as offbeat charm.

Makana is a singer, composer, cultural educator, and master of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar. His music combines deep tradition with unbridled innovation to breathe fresh intensity into the timeless sounds of Hawai'i. The New York Times calls him "dazzling." His music has been featured on three GRAMMY-nominated albums, including the soundtrack of the Academy-Award-winning film The Descendants. Guitar Player Magazine ranked him as one of the top 3 guitarists in America, and the Hawai'i Academy of Recording Arts recognized him with the Slack Key Legacy Award. Slack Key is a unique style from the 1800s that simulates three guitars in one, performed in gorgeous tunings that open the guitar to a symphonic sound.
