Great Dark Wonder - Written for and by fans of the fantastic Canadian music and arts scene...

Review: Terra Lightfoot, “Healing Power”

Terra Lightfoot, “Healing Power”

Not that we are actively keeping score of how many artists we have caught live in concert following the two-year pause button that was the Covid-19 pandemic, but you only have to skim through our concert recap archives from the last 18 months to see JUNO-Award nominee Terra Lightfoot’s name pop up with some frequency. A long-time favorite here at Team GDW, there are no excuses as to why we only managed one date with Terra prior to the pandemic, but since resuming travel and music adventures back in February 2022, we’ve crossed paths with this Hamilton, ON-born, and now Haliburton, ON-resident on five occasions to date.

Our most recent encounters with Terra (guitar/vocals) have been monumental full-band affairs, each time featuring her trusted sidekicks Eli Abrams (bass/vocals) and Blue Rodeo’s Glenn Milchem (drums/vocals). When this trio happen to grace a stage, something very special always follows – their chemistry, charisma, and talents shining brightly each and every time. Oh, how we wish they could bottle this magic for future posterity, perhaps uncorking it in a studio sometime and laying down some tracks for our listening pleasures. I recall back in the summer of 2022, Terra informally announced not only working on new album material with producer Gus Van Go, but had extended the invitation to both Eli and Glenn to join them in the studio to bring this vision to life. Consider that magic bottled…

Afforded little opportunity to tour her previous album, “Consider The Speed” – released during the height of the pandemic in October 2020 – Terra has thrilled audiences with several cuts from this album since live music returned. Yet, as witnessed during our encounters with Terra, she has been equally forthwith about sharing tunes from “Healing Power,” her latest studio album released today, via Sonic Unyon.  “There was a sense of freedom, both personally and creatively, that struck me while I was writing this record,” Terra shares. “Once I got back into the studio with Gus, having already made two records with him, there was an undeniable comfort and workflow that we just fell into. We are super-productive together in the studio. I also seem to get my best vocal takes with Gus behind the board. We built this record pretty quickly together with the band on call whenever we needed them.”

Terra Lightfoot, “Healing Power”

Indeed, one such early teaser track – titled “The Only One Of Your Kind” – was itself born out of the pandemic. “[This is] about something that I only completely neglected – and I only found out during the first years of Covid – because I had so much time to write, and I thought what have I never written about? ” Terra shared during a performance in London, ON this past July. “I’ve written about love, loss, breakups, getting together, all the beautiful parts of a love story, but I’ve never written about my best friends.” Although not released until today, this tune very quickly became an anthem for us during Terra’s performances. Articulating memories of time with her friends – set to a fun, marching rhythm – we’re left wanting to learn why they were “told to dress up fancy,” only to be taken “out to dinner at the Irving gas station.” Tell us more, please.

Roots from the album’s lead track (and first official single), “Cross Border Lovers,” also stem from the effects of the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns. “I played a show in Calgary where two separate couples came up to the merch table, one after another, and shared stories of being separated in different countries for months while pandemic restrictions were strict,” Terra recalls. “Both couples used to listen to a specific song of mine to feel connected to each other. Of course, I was touched. I wrote the words cross border lovers on the back of my merch settlement sheet that night … a month later, I sat down to write, looked at those words, and the song and melody fell out so quickly I could barely write it.”

Terra Lightfoot, “Healing Power”

Honing her songwriting skills over the last decade, Terra remains forever in tune with her surroundings, and savvy enough to find inspiration when she least expects it. Take, for example, “Someone Else’s Feelings,” another recent single whose origins came from one of the unlikeliest places. “I remember standing in a room full of songwriters and someone was talking about doing an upcoming Bob Dylan tribute night, and they said ‘ isn’t is just so easy to sing someone else’s feelings’ ,” Terra offers. “I excused myself and went to an old cemetery across the road from the venue, and the song … was written about how we sometimes let other people’s opinions and feeling dictate how we feel about a situation. Sometimes we make excuses for other people, or we don’t speak up when we know someone is saying something we don’t agree with.”

Similarly, “Penchant For Love” finds Lightfoot digging deeper than before, sourcing inspiration from previously unconsidered recesses. “It’s the first song that I’ve ever written from a place that may be a little big of anger, of natural fear,” she shared during that same summer concert. “It’s about setting boundaries, that’s a nice way to say it.”  And dare I say it, there are definite pop-punk vibes when “Come Back Around” bursts from the speakers – is there anything that Lightfoot is not prepared to experiment with?  Her latest single, “Kept You In My Pocket,” however, is vintage Lightfoot – potent vocals, toe-tapping rhythms, and her mesmerizing guitar work. “I love the guitar solo – it’s right in your face – and the whole song makes me feel like dancing,” Terra adds. “The lovely thing about my relationship with Gus is that I feel safe to try things vocally that I wouldn’t normally do. So I was able to try this wild and outlandish vocal in the chorus because of that. I quite like the sort of dark groove on this one, too. It’s not the usual sound for me in some ways.”

I must confess than an uncontrollable grin formed across my face when learning that Terra titled this new collection of tunes “Healing Power.” I have often referenced the phrase healing power in the context of the positive effects that great music can have upon both one’s emotional state of mind and their entire soul. Going forward, I shall simply switch out the words healing power with Terra Lightfoot – they are one and the same, after all.  Another solid dozen tunes from one of the finest musicians out there on the circuit today, and another essential addition to any enthusiast’s vinyl collection.

Terra Lightfoot Concert Tickets

Get Terra Lightfoot tickets now to see an amazing performance live by a great entertainer. Pop-Rock music has an emphasis on recording craft and songwriting and not as much emphasis on attitude. Beginning in the 1950s as an alternative to rock and roll, early iterations of pop-rock were influenced by doo-wop and rock-and-roll arrangements and styles. Many traditionalists prefer rock and roll to the more slick, commercial production of pop-rock.

Some refer to the music as power pop with a similar sound and lyrical content. Pop-rock music has been very commercially successful using elements of rock music. Many describe it as an upbeat variety of rock music. The term pop comes from the early twentieth century referring to popular music. In the 1950s, it began to be referred to as a specific genre typically aimed at youth and young adults. It is frequently characterized as a softer alternative to rock and roll. Terra Lightfoot - DREAM TOUR

Join us as Terra Lightfoot shares her dream tour lineup.

Joshua Weidling

Joshua Weidling

In this Dream Tour segment, the adult contemporary/americana artist, Terra Lightfoot, reveals who she would want on her ultimate tour lineup. You can check out their picks below:

My band was on one date of Willie Nelson's Outlaw Tour and I have to say I dream about doing more of those shows, or playing at Luck Ranch. Tedeschi & Trucks and Sturgill Simpson and Particle Kid were on the bill, and Willie was next level, I loved seeing the relationship between him and his band and crew - everyone was like family. If I could bring someone back from the dead I would want to meet Leadbelly. I don't think I would play on the tour though, I would just want to hear him sing and tell stories. His writing and songs have informed so much of who I am as a musician, like an undercurrent to everything I do. I would also want to play with Freddie King and Leon Russell, as they created one of my favorite recordings in the world, Going Down. I would play guitar but I would also want to hear Leon play - I didn't know until recently that he could also rip on electric guitar! Last I would bring back Dallas Good to see him play with the Sadies again. It's a little close to home since he was my friend, but man oh man, the idea of seeing him and hearing him again has got me teary-eyed. The last person to close the night for me would be Dorothy Ashby so everyone could just dance and hang out. Her tunes are the best party music to me. I also love the instrumental aspect of her work because you can let go of analyzing words and voices and instead just focus on feeling.

TERRA LIGHTFOOT

Where: Capital Ballroom, 858 Yates St.

When: Wednesday, Oct. 4, 7:30 p.m.

Tickets: $28.59, admitone.com

Note: Lightfoot also performs Oct. 3 at The Queen’s (in Nanaimo) and Oct. 5 at the Sid Williams Theatre (Courtenay)

Terra Lightfoot has developed a trusted pre-show ritual that might surprise those familiar with what the big-voiced, Gibson-wielding fireball can do in concert.

“Hiking is a really good way to be grounded,” the Ontario-based Lightfoot said, at the outset of her afternoon hike. “That’s one thing I need when I’m performing, which is hard to do when you’re travelling all the time. Putting my feet on a trail and seeing something beautiful, being around trees, that fills my cup.”

Lightfoot was on a trail in Canmore, Alberta on Tuesday, mentally prepping for her a Calgary concert later that evening. The performer is heading to Vancouver Island for three shows next week, including one at the Capital Ballroom on Wednesday, her first in five years as a headliner in this market. Hiking, no doubt, will be on the menu.

The 37-year-old Juno Award nominee fondly remembers her first shows in Victoria — at Logan’s Pub and Fort Street Café— as the stops were part of her aptly named Pay Your Dues tour in 2011. “That is definitely what happened,” she said with a laugh.

Over time, her hard work paid dividends: Lightfoot returned to Victoria in 2016 with Blue Rodeo, and in 2022 with Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. Her success in the provincial capital is something that she has replicated across the country over the course of five studio albums. “I’ve gotten to have all these different experiences,” she said. “I feel like I’m in a good place.”

Her latest recording, Healing Power , arrives Oct. 13 after five years of incubating. She hatched the idea for the album after reaching the summit of a mountain in Austria, near the end of a six-week solo tour of Europe in 2018. She had hiked for two hours to get there, and though she was struck by the natural beauty laid out before her, Lightfoot was completely alone during what turned out to be a crucial moment in her journey.

“I had another six weeks of dates in the U.S. coming up,” she recalled. “I would not darken the doorway of my own home for three months. That was hard.”

Shortly after what Lightfoot describes as “that moment on the mountaintop,” she met musician Jonathan Auer of The Posies, who would eventually become her husband (they were married in August). Though she recorded and released her album, Consider the Speed , in 2020, she never gave up on the prospect of bringing Healing Power to light. It was a process that boosted both her personal and professional development.

“I realized what I needed to do was to give attention to myself as a person, which I wasn’t doing. I’m so happy to say that I’ve experienced the healing power of music.”

The performer, who was raised in Hamilton, Ontario, now lives in a rural area two hours outside of Toronto, where she moved to escape the big city grind. She still enjoys her time in Toronto, which is where she recorded Healing Power with producer Gus Van Go, a three-time Juno nominee (born: Gus Coriandoli) for his production work on albums by Metric, Whitehorse, and The Beaches.

Lightfoot said she loves working in Coriandoli’s studio, despite her preference for quietude. “His studio is right in the middle of Toronto, in a very trendy neighbourhood. There’s tons of stuff around, but no nature to speak of, and no natural light,” she said with a laugh.

“I used to be obsessed with [quiet], but now I’m able to go ahead and work, regardless of what the physical space is about. I’m a lot more comfortable.”

She credits Coriandoli’s steady presence in the studio for helping her confidence blossom outside of it — especially with regard to her singing. For a performer known for her bombastic voice, Lightfoot said she was always self-conscious about her voice growing up.

“I have dealt with that since I was a teenager. If my parents heard me singing in my bedroom, I would say I had a friend over. I just couldn’t do it. Painfully afraid.”

Touring has also been a big positive, in terms of raising her confidence. “That’s the funny thing. Everyone thinks that when you’re a rock ‘n’ roll musician, and have a guitar, you must be the most confident person in the world. But for me, that hasn’t always been true.”

Ivanovo, Russia

Ivanovo, Russia

Tours, Attractions and Things To Do in Ivanovo

Ivanovo travel guide.

  • 2. Ivanovo today

Ivanovo, Russia, a modest city located 290 kilometers from Moscow and 100 kilometers from Yaroslavl, rose to prominence in the 18 th century as the Textile Capital of Russia. A pearl along the Golden Ring of Russia, Ivanovo has maintained its reputation as a flourishing industrial city which impresses visitors with unique museums and historic avant-garde architecture .

The city of Ivanovo developed from a village which was founded on the Uvod River in the 15 th century. The precise circumstances of its founding remain murky, yet historians have found mention of it in a document dating to 1651. The settlement once belonged to Ivan the Terrible who, after marrying Maria Cherkassk, gifted it to the princes of Cherkassk. During the Time of Troubles of the early 16 th century, a Polish-Cossack camp was established here. In the early 18 th century, it passed into the hands of the counts of Sheremetyev, who remained in control for the next 120 years.

Several villages were established around the settlement, which came to be known as Voznesensky Posad. After the hamlets were unified, it was renamed Ivanovo-Voznesensk, and in 1932 the city’s name was whittled down to Ivanovo.

In 1742, the first factories were founded in Ivanovo, in which canvases were manually churned out on machines and bleached in river water. Production in Ivanovo continued to develop, with residents first weaving material from thin, durable linen and later from calico. Over time, the city grew into the largest center of textile production in the entire Russian Empire. This title was no small source of pride for its residents, and even the city's coat of arms depicts a girl in folk costume sitting with a spindle and spinning wheel. Ivanovo began to be dubbed "Calico Region", "Textile Capital of Russia" and even “City of Brides”, since the rapid development of the city’s textile industry led to a disproportionately high number of women among its population.

Yet Ivanovo’s significance was not limited to its superb textile industry alone. Having set its sights on becoming the third capital of Russia, the city became a platform for various social experiments. Russia’s finest architects were commissioned to work in the city, which became a center for the constructivist architecture popular in the Soviet Union in the 1920s-1930s. Some of the country’s most revolutionary architectural endeavors were carried out here, including communal housing, the first Soviet kitchen factory, a constructivist railway station and sundry avant-garde projects.

After World War II, Ivanovo’s rapidly developing heavy industry generated a boom in its housing industry. Although employed in factories and industrial settings, residents were provided with ample parks in which to relax and enjoy the brisk Ivanovo weather in spring and summer.

The 18 th - early 20 th century estates of Ivanovo’s merchants and manufacturers played a significant role in the development of the city’s material and cultural vibe, as is evidenced in buildings such as the State Medical Academy and various 1920s factories in which innovative architecture was flamboyantly displayed .

Ivanovo Today

Today the city of Ivanovo, located in Ivanovo Region (Ivanovo Oblast) along Russia’s Golden Ring, invites visitors to step back in time and embrace its spirited heritage.

The city offers three theaters, four cinemas, the Ivanovo State Circus and Ivanovo State Philharmonic Society. Stepanov Park of Culture and Leisure, named after a 1920s member of the Ivanovo Council of Workers and Soldiers, is spread across 70 hectares of land which once belonged to a local industrialist family, while various monuments pay tribute to local historical figures. The most notable of these is the Monument to Yakov Garelin, an industrialist who managed and modernized a pivotal textile plant in the 1840s.

Ivanovo’s eclectic assortment of museums promises to satisfy every interest. Visit the House Museum of the Bubnov Family to see the city’s only surviving building with a mezzanine or the Museum of the National Artist of Russia A.I. Morozov, housed in a 1910 log cabin. Other unique galleries include Museum of Soviet Car Industry, Museum of Ivanovo Chintz, Ivanovo Regional Art Museum and the Ivanovo State Museum of History and Local Lore of DG Burylin. Dozens of Ivanovo’s famed constructivist-era buildings also remain intact, most notably the unique Bird House, Horseshoe House and Ship House.

The spiritual life of Ivanovo can be seen in its many 19 th -20 th century churches and monasteries. Among them are the wooden Assumption Cemetery Church (17 th century), Church of Our Lady of Kazan (1810), Holy Assumption Monastery (1834), Transfiguration Cathedral (19 th century), Church of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God (early 20 th century), the popular Sviato-Vvedensky Monastery (1901) and Temple in Honor of All Who Sorrow (1901, rebuilt in 1997-1999), which is counted among the most beautiful buildings in the city.

Ivanovo, Russia also offers a lively festival and concert scene. The city hosts many annual festivals, including Zerkalo (Mirror) International Film Festival, otherwise known as Tarkovskyfest; International Muraveynik (Anthill) Puppet Theater Festival; Antifabrika Rock Festival and the Black Rose Arkady Severny International Music Festival.

Coat of arms

Thanks to its development in the 18th century as a booming centre of the textile industry, today Ivanovo is still often referred to as the 'City of Brides' (due to the influx of women to work in its factories) or as 'Russian/Red Manchester' (another major textile producer at the time). It also gained the nickname 'Home of the First Soviet' after the first workers' council was formed here. Although it is considered a principal city of the Golden Ring, Ivanovo has less to offer than the other destinations on the popular tourist route. However a trip to Ivanovo can be combined with visits to more touristy cities in the Ivanovo Region such as Plyos .
