International Tourism to Reach Pre-Pandemic Levels in 2024

  • All Regions
  • 19 Jan 2024

Following a strong 2023, international tourism is well on track to return to pre-pandemic levels in 2024.

According to the first UNWTO World Tourism Barometer of the year, international tourism ended 2023 at 88% of pre-pandemic levels , with an estimated 1.3 billion international arrivals . The unleashing of remaining pent-up demand, increased air connectivity, and a stronger recovery of Asian markets and destinations, are expected to underpin a full recovery by the end of 2024.

Middle East, Europe and Africa performed strongest in 2023

The latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer provides a comprehensive overview of the sector's performance in 2023, tracking recovery by global region, sub-region and destination. Key takeaways include:

  • The Middle East led recovery in relative terms as the only region to overcome pre-pandemic levels with arrivals 22% above 2019.
  • Europe , the world's most visited region, reached 94% of 2019 levels, supported by intra-regional demand and travel from the United States.
  • Africa recovered 96% of pre-pandemic visitors and Americas reached 90%.
  • Asia and the Pacific reached 65% of pre-pandemic levels following the reopening of several markets and destinations. However, performance is mixed, with South Asia already recovering 87% of 2019 levels and North-East Asia around 55%.

International Tourist Arrivals (% change over 2019)

Available data shows several destinations, including both large, established destinations as well as small and emerging ones, reporting double-digit growth in international arrivals in 2023 when compared to 2019. Four sub-regions exceeded their 2019 arrival levels: Southern Mediterranean Europe, Caribbean, Central America and North Africa.

UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili says: "The latest UNWTO data underscores tourism's resilience and rapid recovery, with pre-pandemic numbers expected by the end of 2024. The rebound is already having a significant impact on economies, jobs, growth and opportunities for communities everywhere. These numbers also recall the critical task of progressing sustainability and inclusion in tourism development"

International tourism hit US$1.4 trillion in 2023

The latest UNWTO data also highlights the economic impact of recovery.

  • International tourism receipts reached USD 1.4 trillion in 2023 according to preliminary estimates, about 93% of the USD 1.5 trillion earned by destinations in 2019.
  • Total export revenues from tourism (including passenger transport) are estimated at USD 1.6 trillion in 2023, almost 95% of the USD 1.7 trillion recorded in 2019.
  • Preliminary estimates on the economic contribution of tourism, measured in tourism direct gross domestic product (TDGDP) point to USD 3.3 trillion in 2023, or 3% of global GDP. This indicates a recovery of pre-pandemic TDGDP driven by strong domestic and international tourism.

Several destinations reported strong growth in international tourism receipts during the first ten to twelve months of 2023, exceeding in some cases growth in arrivals. Strong demand for outbound travel was also reported by several large source markets this period, with many exceeding 2019 levels.

The sustained recovery is also reflected in the performance of industry indicators. According to the UNWTO Tourism Recovery Tracker, both international air capacity and passenger demand recovered about 90% of pre-pandemic levels through October 2023 (IATA). Global occupancy rates in accommodation establishments reached 65% in November, slightly above 62% in November 2022 (based on STR data).

Looking Ahead to 2024

International tourism is expected to fully recover pre-pandemic levels in 2024, with initial estimates pointing to 2% growth above 2019 levels. This central forecast by UNWTO remains subject to the pace of recovery in Asia and to the evolution of existing economic and geopolitical downside risks.

The positive outlook is reflected in the latest UNWTO Tourism Confidence Index survey, with 67% of tourism professionals indicating better or much better prospects for 2024 compared to 2023. Some 28% expect similar performance, while only 6% expect tourism performance in 2024 to be worse than last year. Key considerations include:

  • There is still significant room for recovery across Asia. The reopening of several source markets and destinations will boost recovery in the region and globally.
  • Chinese outbound and inbound tourism is expected to accelerate in 2024, due to visa facilitation and improved air capacity. China is applying visa-free travel for citizens of France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Malaysia for a year to 30 November 2024.
  • Visa and travel facilitation measures will promote travel to and around the Middle East and Africa with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries to implement a unified tourist visa, similar to the Schengen visa, and measures to facilitate intra-African travel in Kenya and Rwanda.
  • Europe is expected to drive results again in 2024. In March, Romania and Bulgaria will join the Schengen area of free movement, and Paris will host the Summer Olympics in July and August.
  • Strong travel from the United States, backed by a strong US dollar, will continue to benefit destinations in the Americas and beyond. As in 2023, robust source markets in Europe, the Americas and the Middle East, will continue to fuel tourism flows and spending around the world.
  • Economic and geopolitical headwinds continue to pose significant challenges to the sustained recovery of international tourism and confidence levels. Persisting inflation, high interest rates, volatile oil prices and disruptions to trade can continue to impact transport and accommodations costs in 2024.
  • Against this backdrop, tourists are expected to increasingly seek value for money and travel closer to home. Sustainable practices and adaptability will also play an increasing role in consumer choice.
  • Staff shortages remain a critical issue, as tourism businesses face a shortfall in labor to cope with high demand.
  • The evolution of the Hamas-Israel conflict may disrupt travel in the Middle East and impact traveler confidence. Uncertainty derived from the Russian aggression against Ukraine as well as other mounting geopolitical tensions, continue to weigh on confidence.

Secretary raimondo announces new national strategy to reenergize u.s. travel and tourism, office of public affairs.

Commerce Secretary Gina M. Raimondo today announced a new National Travel and Tourism Strategy that focuses federal government efforts to support the U.S. travel and tourism industry and sets an ambitious five-year goal of attracting 90 million international visitors to the United States each year. It is estimated these visitors would spend $279 billion annually—expenditures that will support job creation in communities across the United States, its territories, and the District of Columbia.

The Tourism Policy Council , a federal interagency council created by Congress, was charged by Secretary Raimondo with creating the strategy to focus U.S. government efforts in support of the travel and tourism sector which has been deeply and disproportionally affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The strategy follows a four-point approach to reduce the industry’s carbon footprint, create safe and secure checkpoints, and bolster travel and tourism in underserved and underrepresented communities across the country.

Specifically, the strategy aims to: promote the United States as a premier travel destination, including broadening marketing efforts to encourage visitation to underserved and underrepresented communities; facilitate safe and efficient travel to and within the United States and its territories; ensure diverse and accessible tourism experiences with a focus on showcasing the nation’s federal lands and waters while also protecting them for future generations; and foster resilient and sustainable travel and tourism with goals to reduce the sectors’ contributions to climate change while rebuilding sectors that protect natural resources, support the tourism economy and ensure equitable development. Read the strategy and the fact sheet .

“Across all 50 states, U.S. territories and the District of Columbia, communities are safely welcoming back visitors. From the crown jewels of our national parks and forests, to the historic and diverse sites that tell the story of our people and culture, the United States offers destinations for international travelers like no other,” said Secretary Raimondo. “The impact of COVID-19 has taken a toll on our national and local economies, but it also has presented us with a unique opportunity to mold a more inclusive, equitable, sustainable and resilient travel and tourism industry than ever before. Our new strategy leverages the best of what the U.S. public and private sectors offer, which will promote jobs, recover lost revenues, and inspire unforgettable experiences.”

The travel and tourism sector has historically been a critical force in economic growth and employment in the United States. When non-U.S. residents purchase goods and services while in the United States, it counts as export income for the U.S. economy.

In 2020, the Department’s  National Travel and Tourism Office  reported that the decline in travel and tourism to and within the United States accounted for 56% of the decline in U.S. gross domestic product (GDP), and travel exports dropped 65% in 2020 when compared to 2019, or pre-pandemic levels.

However, throughout 2021, as the Biden-Harris Administration implemented a robust vaccine rollout and effective travel policies centered around health and safety, along with lifting travel restrictions when it was safe to do so, monthly overseas arrivals to the United States increased from roughly 775,000 in October 2021 to more than 2 million in April 2022. As a result, international travel to the United States has generated a trade surplus in each of the past five months indicating a positive trend toward recovery even as international travel remains below pre-pandemic levels.

SACRAMENTO (July 13, 2021) – The new state budget agreed upon by Gov. Gavin Newsom and state lawmakers includes $95 million in one-time stimulus to boost California’s tourism economy. The funds will directly support Visit California’s domestic marketing efforts as California communities begin to welcome back visitors from both in and out of state.

The funding represents the largest stimulus investment of its kind in the country as California looks to compete with other destinations across the nation. Visit California will use the funds to extend its in-state marketing efforts, including its “Calling All Californians” campaign, and expand its reach nationwide with four new campaigns aimed at inspiring visitors to return to the Golden State.

“California’s travel and hospitality industry is grateful to Gov. Newsom and the Legislature for including $95 million in one-time stimulus funding to jump-start tourism marketing and hasten the recovery of the Golden State’s tourism economy in the wake of the devastating Covid-19 pandemic,” said Visit California President and CEO Caroline Beteta.

“California’s tourism industry has invested more than $1 billion to promote the California brand globally over the last 15 years. This year it faced going dark, as the pandemic slowed visitation and depleted available marketing funds,” Beteta continued. “The stimulus in the state budget allows California to continue marketing across the United States for the next year, allowing the industry to reclaim market share and reestablish itself as one of the state’s most reliable job producers. It is truly a game changer.”

Initial projections from SMARInsights estimate that the state’s $95 million stimulus investment will create more than 330,000 new jobs in California and generate more than $35 billion in revenue from visitors.

"Bringing visitors back to California and encouraging Californians to rediscover their home state will provide a much-needed lifeline to California’s small businesses, many of which are still struggling to recover from the pandemic,” said Gene Zanger, Visit California board chair and partner in Casa de Fruta. “This stimulus funding will empower our state to accelerate the recovery timeline for California’s tourism industry and for communities throughout the state whose residents and businesses depend heavily on travel spending.”

The stimulus will allow Visit California to vastly expand its advertising outreach to domestic travelers in California and across the United States. About two thirds of the money will go to extend existing advertising programs that would have expired for lack of funds -- “Calling All Californians,” “California Road Trip Republic” and “What if, California.”

In addition, the stimulus will allow:

  • A nearly $20 million investment in campaigns to promote culinary tourism and family travel in the Golden State, including to winter sports destinations.
  • A new emphasis on promoting travel to California’s urban cores, which were particularly hard hit by the impact of Covid-19.
  • A dedicated $4.5 million investment to bring back business and group travel — a first for the statewide organization and a key element of recovery for urban destinations.
  • A robust co-op program allowing destination marketing organizations in all corners of California to team up with Visit California to maximize the power of their locally funded programs by two and half times via a 50% match, free creative production and steeply discounted media rates.

ABOUT VISIT CALIFORNIA: Visit California is a nonprofit organization with a mission to develop and maintain marketing programs – in partnership with the state’s travel industry – that keep California top-of-mind as a premier travel destination. New Report Reveals that Tourism Generates $66 Billion for Pennsylvania’s Economy and Supports 450,000 Jobs

The new report shows that visitor spending has nearly rebounded to 2019 levels as the Commonwealth welcome 180 million visitors in 2021

Harrisburg, PA – A new report by the Pennsylvania Tourism Office shows the tourism industry in the Commonwealth generated $66.3 billion in economic impact, supported 452,885 jobs, contributed $4.2 billion in state and local taxes, and welcomed 180 million visitors in 2021. The 2021 Economic Impact of Travel and Tourism report, released in tandem with National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW), provides state, regional, and county level estimates that demonstrate the vital importance of the travel industry to Pennsylvania’s economy. The report, which contains the most recently available data, shows visitor activity in Pennsylvania increased significantly in 2021. This is attributed to businesses and venues reopening and traveler confidence rising.

Key 2021 results include:

  • 180 million visitors, an increase of more than 28 million from 2020
  • $66.3 billion in total economic impact
  • $4.2 billion in state and local taxes
  • 452,885 jobs supported, which equates to 1-in-17 jobs in the state
  • A $9.1 billion increase in direct visitor spending to reach $38 billion — including hotels, restaurants, retailers and other tourism related businesses.

“Tourism is a significant economic driver in Pennsylvania that injects billions into our economy and helps to fund transportation, infrastructure, education, public safety programs and other vital services provided by the Commonwealth,” said Carrie Fischer Lepore, Department of Community and Economic Development Deputy Secretary of Marketing, Tourism & Film. “Each household in Pennsylvania would need to pay an additional $802 in taxes to replace the tax dollars generated by the tourism industry which were received by state and local governments in 2021. We know that these numbers will continue to grow as consumer trends show, yet again, significant enthusiasm for travel to Pennsylvania.”

According to the latest Longwoods International tracking study of American travelers , 93 percent have trips planned in the next six month – the highest level in three years.

Visitor spending — which supports jobs, income, and business sales — generated $8.8 billion in government revenues. State and local taxes alone tallied $4.2 billion in 2021, an increase of $614 million from 2020.

Overnight visitor spending growth has contributed the most to the economic recovery, increasing by $7.5 billion — 82 percent of the overall spending gain — in 2021, with more than 60 million trips resulted in $23.2 billion in spending. Overnight visitors spent $388 per person, a $27 increase from 2020; while spending on day trips grew to $14.8 billion.

The Economic Impact of Travel and Tourism report is compiled at the Pennsylvania Tourism Office at DCED with information provide by Tourism Economics , an Oxford Economics Company based in Wayne, with data supplied by Longwoods International and STR .

Established in 1983, National Travel and Tourism Week is an annual tradition to celebrate the U.S. travel community and travel’s essential role in stimulating economic growth, cultivating vibrant communities, creating quality job opportunities, inspiring new businesses and elevating the quality of life for Americans every day. The theme for the 40th anniversary of NTTW is #TravelForward to spotlight the essential role that travel plays in driving economic growth and innovation.

The Pennsylvania Tourism Office, housed within the Department of Community and Economic Development, is dedicated to inspiring travel to Pennsylvania. From iconic attractions to hidden gems, tourism in Pennsylvania helps support the state’s economy and creates jobs for local businesses — all while improving residents’ quality of life.

Travel advocates share new trillion-dollar impact figures with policymakers.

Travel’s essential contributions to U.S. economy, opportunities to grow travel are front and center at legislative fly-in

PRESS RELEASE April 19, 2023

WASHINGTON -

At $1.2 trillion, direct spending on travel in the United States in 2022 was on par with pre-pandemic figures, according to new data released today by the U.S. Travel Association—reflecting the industry’s essential contributions to the American economy.

“Travel rebounded strongly in 2022 thanks to robust demand for domestic leisure travel,” said U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Geoff Freeman. “Now we must focus on fully restoring the international and business travel segments to continue growing this critical driver of the U.S. economy.”

Key points:

  • Travel accounted for $1.2 trillion in direct spending in 2022, which produced an economic footprint of $2.6 trillion .
  • In 2022, travel supported nearly 15 million American workers—8 million directly employed by the travel industry.
  • Travel spending generated nearly $160 billion in total tax revenue, including $84 billion in state and local tax revenue in 2022.
  • Travel-generated tax revenue alleviated an average of $1,270 in taxes per U.S. household.

U.S. Travel economists cautioned, though, that when adjusting for inflation, overall travel spending remained down 14% in 2022.

Telling Travel’s Story in Washington

On Wednesday, nearly 250 travel industry leaders from U.S. Travel member organizations elevated the industry’s essential contributions to federal policymakers during the association’s annual legislative fly-in, Destination Capitol Hill .

Delegate meetings were scheduled with 230 members of Congress and their offices to discuss how travel drives economic growth and creates jobs within their respective communities, as well as legislative priorities to grow all sectors of the U.S. travel industry.

Top legislative priorities :

  • Fully fund the office of the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Travel and Tourism.
  • Lower visitor visa wait times.
  • Provide H-2B cap relief to address travel workforce shortfalls.
  • Advance Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization priorities.

“Travel’s success is the nation’s success—these priorities are not just important to our industry, but to the future of the U.S. economy,” added Freeman.

U.S. Travel Association is the national, non-profit organization representing the $1.3 trillion travel industry, an essential contributor to our nation's economy and success. U.S. Travel produces programs and insights and advocates for policies to increase travel to and within the United States. Visit ustravel.org for more information.

New Jersey Tourism Data Highlights Recovery With Increased Visitation and Spending in 2021

Annual visitor spending exceeds predictions; per-trip spending nears pre-pandemic numbers.

TRENTON, NEW JERSEY (May 5, 2022) – The New Jersey Division of Travel & Tourism today released the “2021 Economic Impact of Tourism in New Jersey” study at the New Jersey Tourism Industry Association’s (NJTIA) annual Advocacy Day event, signaling the strengthening recovery across key travel sectors with positive forecasts in the year ahead.

Visitation grows 14% over pandemic lows According to the state’s independent research partner, Tourism Economics, visitation to New Jersey increased over 14% from 2020, welcoming a total of 96.6 million visitors in 2021. Despite the additional 12 million visitors, visitation recovery was uneven, impacted by the delta and omicron COVID-19 variants during fall and winter travel. Visitation remained 17% below the record-breaking levels achieved in 2019.

Visitor spending surpasses 2020 predictions Visitor spending surged to $37.3 billion in 2021, surpassing 2020’s multiyear recovery predictions, to regain nearly a half of pandemic losses. Supplementing the 27% growth is an increase in per-traveler spending to $386 per trip, nearing pre-pandemic levels. Overall, visitor spending generated a total of $4.6 billion in state and local taxes.

As visitor volume continues to rebound with loosening travel restrictions and the re-opening of international borders, data reveals that visitors are spending more on trips to the Garden State.

“New Jersey is fortunate to welcome visitors from across the country and around the globe, in addition to providing an in-state travel destination for many residents. As the increase in visitor spending continues to re-stimulate the state’s economy, the fiscal contributions in 2021 represented a $1,400 in tax savings to New Jersey households,” said New Jersey Secretary of State Tahesha Way. “While spending across primary tourism categories increased in 2021, it’s equally important to emphasize that traveler activity benefits industries throughout the state with significant indirect and induced revenues.”

Lodging leads spending by category with 28% of visitor share All tourism and travel business sectors experienced a jump in spending in 2021, led by a 36% increase in lodging sales. Lodging businesses witnessed the largest spend by category at $10.5 billion, pushing ahead of food and beverage, as room demand surged, casinos re-opened, and the summer shore season remained actively strong.

Tourism and travel industry supports 430,000 state jobs “The overall impact of visitors is vital to New Jersey’s robust economy, and we see that clearly in how the industry supported one-in-12 jobs in the state last year, recouping close to a third of pandemic-induced job losses,” said New Jersey Division of Travel and Tourism Executive Director Jeff Vasser. “So much of our success is dependent on meeting and exceeding travelers’ expectations, and to that end, we have pivoted how our industry recruits, develops and retains employees to ensure a welcoming—and repeat—experience for both visitors and staff.”

Key findings from the “2021 Economic Impact of Tourism in New Jersey” study

  • New Jersey welcomed 96.6 million visitors in 2021 with visitation growing over 14% from 2020; visitation remained 17% below 2019’s record-breaking levels.
  • Visitors spent $37.3 billion in New Jersey in 2021, representing an $8 billion increase from 2020.
  • Per-visitor spending for both overnight and day visitors recovered to near pre-pandemic levels with each traveler spending $386 per trip in New Jersey in 2021.
  • Visitor spending generated $4.6 billion in state and local taxes in 2021, equivalent to $1,400 in tax savings for every household in New Jersey.
  • Tourism supported over 430,000 New Jersey jobs (one-in-12) and nearly $20 billion in state gross domestic product (GDP) in 2021, representing 2.8% of the state economy.

New Jersey visitation and spend forecasts expect further rebound New visitation state forecasts predict 12% growth to 108 million person-trips in 2022, recovering about 75% of visitation losses from the pandemic. Visitation is estimated to reach pre-COVID levels in 2023. Additionally, visitor spending is projected to surpass $44 billion this year, which is a 19% increase, pushing it to 90% of pre-pandemic levels with full recovery achieved in 2023.

Gov. Evers Announces Wisconsin Tourism Sees Record-Breaking Year

Note: This press release was originally distributed by the office of Governor Tony Evers.

OSHKOSH — Gov. Tony Evers, together with Wisconsin Department of Tourism Secretary Anne Sayers, today announced Wisconsin’s tourism industry saw a record-breaking year in 2022. According to 2022 economic impact data, the tourism industry generated $23.7 billion in total economic impact, surpassing the previous record year of $22.2 billion set in 2019.

“I’m so excited to be celebrating a record-breaking year for Wisconsin’s tourism industry. This is tremendous news and a testament to the hard work of the business owners, workers, and marketing partners across the industry and our strategic investments to bolster the industry at an especially difficult time,” said Gov. Evers. “Tourism is vital to the economic health of local communities, businesses, and workers across our state, and I’m proud of our work to support this critical industry and its success over these past few years. We must continue to make key investments in Wisconsin tourism to ensure it continues to be a key part of our economy for generations.”

The economic impact of the travel and tourism industry is felt by communities in every corner of the state, and in 2022, all 72 counties experienced an increase in total tourism economic impact. Further, last year, tourism supported 174,600 part-time and full-time jobs across various sectors of the industry and generated $1.5 billion in state and local tax revenue. Historic marketing investments from the Wisconsin Department of Tourism, critical relief dollars allocated by Gov. Evers, and the efforts of communities across Wisconsin helped contribute to the new record, as well as the highest-ever overnight visitation rate.

In 2022, there were 111.1 million visits in Wisconsin, which was up 8.8 million visits, or 8.7 percent, over the previous year. This includes a record 45.4 million overnight visits, an increase of 13.8 percent from 2021. Overnight visitors, on average, spent nearly three times as much as day trip visitors. To learn more about Wisconsin tourism’s record-breaking year and view the 2022 economic impact data, including a county-by-county breakdown, visit: industry.travelwisconsin.com/research .

“Tourism is both big fun and big business. I’m so grateful for the innovation and dedication of the folks who make up the Wisconsin tourism industry. Each one of them played a role in setting this record,” said Wisconsin Department of Tourism Secretary Sayers. “Aided by strategic marketing, Wisconsin convinced more visitors to stay the night so they could add more activities to their itinerary, delivering a deeper economic impact. I congratulate the entire industry on an incredible record-breaking year.”

Since launching the “Here’s to Those Who Wisconsin” brand in 2021, Travel Wisconsin’s advertising campaigns have reached visitors in 12 Midwestern markets and resulted in more than one billion impressions. The brand highlights Wisconsin’s welcoming nature and celebratory spirit while positioning Wisconsin as a premier travel destination to make lifelong memories.

Travel Wisconsin markets Wisconsin as an all-seasons destination, and the economic impact data reflects that as travel spending grew year-over-year in every quarter in 2022.

The Native Nations of Wisconsin also play a critical role in enriching the state’s tourism industry offerings and attracting travelers to the state. Because Tribal tourism data is private, the total economic impact of Tribal tourism is not wholly reflected in this report.

Rwanda Economic Update: Nature-based Tourism Holds Tremendous Economic Potential

KIGALI, February 21, 2023— The Rwandan economy continued to achieve strong growth in 2022 despite global headwinds and an unprecedented increase in food prices, according to the 20 th edition of the Rwanda Economic Update report released today.

Rwanda’s GDP grew by 8.4 percent in the first three quarters of 2022, after reaching 11 percent in 2021. Growth was spurred by the services sector, especially the revival of tourism, leading to the improvement of employment indicators to levels similar to those at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020.

However, rising food prices may have exacerbated poverty and food insecurity, according to the Rwanda Economic Update. The increase in international commodity prices, related to the war in Ukraine combined with the poor harvest in Rwanda, have led to substantial increases in energy, transport, and food prices, with urban inflation rising to 21.7 percent in November 2022. Rising food prices particularly affected the poor, who devote a large share of their spending to food and appear to have faced higher food inflation than richer households did. Measures adopted by the government to mitigate the effects of inflation over the past year include an increase in subsidies (primarily on fuels, fertilizers, seeds, and public transit), increased spending on social protection, and increases in teachers’ salaries, as well as government contributions to school feeding programs.

“While the authorities have taken several measures to mitigate the impact of inflation on households, further steps are required to protect the poor and vulnerable from the impact of rising food prices as well as to strengthen policies to address food insecurity and prevent child stunting,” according to Peace Aimee Niyibizi, World Bank Economist.

Going forward, Rwanda’s economy is projected to expand at a slower pace in 2023-2025. While tourism is likely to continue to recover, external demand is likely to weaken as a result of a major increase in interest rates by the central bank to reduce inflation.

In its special focus on “Making the Most of Nature-Based Tourism in Rwanda”, the report provides a thorough analysis of challenges and opportunities in the nature-based tourism sector in Rwanda.

Nature-based tourism holds tremendous potential for creating employment and spurring economic growth in Rwanda. But to fully use that opportunity, innovative actions would be needed to mobilize more resources, beyond government budget, and enhance private sector participation to protect natural assets and develop appropriate infrastructure said Rolande Pryce, World Bank Country Manager for Rwanda.

Tourism is a major source of Rwanda’s foreign exchange earnings and tends to generate a higher proportion of formal sector jobs than other sectors. Within the tourism sector, nature-based tourism, which accounts for 80 percent of leisure and business visitors in Rwanda, not only helps protect biodiversity and advance Rwanda’s efforts to adapt to climate change, but also plays an important role in job creation: for every $1 million (about Rwf 1,050 million) that nature-based tourism activities inject into the economy, it is estimated that an additional 1,328 new jobs could be created.

The report notes that nature-based tourism in Rwanda faces significant challenges, including potential limits on the expansion of revenues for one of the primary international attractions (gorilla trekking), degradation of the natural assets, risks presented by infectious diseases, land degradation, and overexploitation of natural resources, and the impact of climate change.

Investment requirements to address challenges hampering the development of nature-based tourism in Rwanda are estimated at $97.5-107.7 million for the period from 2019 through 2030. The Update recommends accelerating efforts to secure private sector participation in financing and operating nature-based tourism facilities by introducing innovative financing methods, as well as strengthening capacity and the management of tourism facilities and services.

Efforts are required to enhance revenue sharing mechanisms and increase incentives for local communities to conserve natural assets and unlock new opportunities for community-led enterprises that generate revenue from tourism and sustainable management of natural resources, including forests. This is essential to address poverty, to mitigate poaching threats and other illegal activities, and to reduce the unsustainable exploitation of the natural assets that are vital for successful nature-based tourism, according to the Update.

Governor Lamont Announces Summer Tourism Season Kicks off at State Parks, Beaches, and Cultural Attractions

Visitors and residents can explore opportunities for summer plans throughout connecticut by visiting ctparks.com and ctvisit.com.

(MILFORD, CT) – Governor Ned Lamont today visited Silver Sands State Park in Milford – one of Connecticut’s 110 state parks and 32 state forests – where he held an event to kick off the summer tourism season and encourage the state’s residents and visitors to consider the many outdoor recreation opportunities Connecticut has to offer.

Many of these opportunities can be explored by visiting Connecticut’s official state parks website at CTparks.com and by visiting Connecticut official tourism website at CTvisit.com .

“Connecticut has so many beautiful outdoor recreation opportunities, including at our 110 state parks and 32 state forests, which are among the best in the country and are a huge part of the tremendous quality of life here in our state,” Governor Lamont said . “We are proud to be ranked the number one state in the country for hiking, with more than 2,000 miles of diverse trails in our beautiful state parks. Plentiful outdoor activity combined with an array of cultural marvels and exquisite dining, which includes the honor of hosting two James Beard Award finalists, make Connecticut an ideal place to visit this summer.”

Connecticut’s shoreline and inland state parks that have swimming areas are now almost fully staffed with lifeguards, and campgrounds are now open for the season. Museums, nature centers, and other interpretive seasonal sites within the parks are also open for fun activities, including tours. Through the Passport to the Parks program, drivers that have a Connecticut-registered vehicle do not have to pay a fee to park at any state park and forest.

All of the state parks are overseen by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP).

“We have so many gorgeous places to play outside in our state, and so many ways to recreate, whether it’s a day at the beach, relaxing by a campfire, or fishing, boating, or hiking, there’s something for everyone to enjoy,” DEEP Commissioner Katie Dykes said . “I encourage all residents to visit CTparks.com to discover the varied experiences our parks have to offer and to build a fun summer adventure itinerary around a visit to a park using the ‘While You’re Here’ feature, which shows other fun things to do in the area of a park you may be visiting. Here’s to a safe summer parks season filled with fun adventures and memories to last a lifetime.”

New state parks website recommends local tourism attractions

Earlier this year, DEEP launched a new state parks website ( CTparks.com ) to help visitors better access Connecticut’s 110 state parks, 32 state forests, 14 campgrounds, 23 designated swimming areas, thousands of miles of trails, and hundreds of thousands of acres to enjoy. The state parks offer opportunities for hiking, camping, swimming, boating, fishing, and picnicking, among many other outdoor activities.

The innovative online platform allows residents and visitors the opportunity to search state parks by desired activity or location, reserve a campsite, find a hiking trail, or explore options to extend their stay by visiting nearby restaurants, shops, hotels and attractions.

Connecticut’s state parks are one of the state’s largest tourism attractions and fuels the outdoor recreation economy, which contributes $4.6 billion annually to the state’s economy.

Connecticut’s tourism website compliments state park opportunities

The Connecticut State Parks website is a companion to the state’s tourism website, CTvisit.com , which had a record 9.4 million visits in 2023, up 32% from 2022, making it one of the top ten most visited state tourism websites in the nation. This impressive traffic surpasses not only its New England neighbors but even outpaces New York. The website has recently undergone enhancements to elevate the design and overall user experience, making it more convenient for visitors to discover all there is to see and do in Connecticut and find travel inspiration to help them plan a trip.

Exciting new attractions and events are available for summer 2024

Several new tourism opportunities are available for the summer of 2024. This includes:

  • Inaugural Oyster Trail : Connecticut revealed its first-ever oyster trail, which includes over a dozen oyster farms and more than 20 restaurants and stores across the state. Check it out at ctvisit.com/articles/connecticut-oyster-trail .
  • Yale Peabody Museum in New Haven : After three years of major renovations, the museum has doubled its exhibition space, added new research facilities, and eight classrooms. It is now free and open to all.
  • The Glass House in New Canaan : Celebrating its 75 th anniversary, the Glass House features the newly restored Brick House, designed by Philip Johnson in 1949.
  • Soundside Music Festival (September 28-29) in Bridgeport : Formerly known as Sound on Sound, Connecticut’s largest music festival at Seaside Park has been reimagined with more experiences and site improvements. Headliners include Noah Kahan and Foo Fighters.
  • Voyage to the Deep – Underwater Adventures at Mystic Seaport Museum : This highly interactive exhibit allows visitors to climb aboard a submarine and explore marine habitats, diving equipment, and maritime archaeology.
  • Lake Compounce in Bristol : The park features enhancements including a re-tracked 97-year-old Wildcat Roller Coaster, an upgraded Boulder Dash roller coaster with more than 1,000 feet of Titan Track, and a new coffee shop offering fun coffee creations, pastries, and more.
  • Sun Patio at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville : The renovated open-air area now features fire pits, Adirondack chairs, grassy turf, and a large stage. The Sun Patio will host a weekly concert series every Friday with live music, drink specials, food trucks, and more.

ParkConneCT provides transportation to state parks and beaches

This year, Connecticut is once again expanding access to state parks and beaches through the ParkConneCT program.

Beginning Memorial Day weekend and operating on weekends through Labor Day, DEEP and the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) are again partnering to provide this service, which helps residents and out-of-state visitors access certain parks and rail and connect to buses that provide services to Silver Sands State Park, Hammonasset Beach State Park, and Sleeping Giant State Park.

As DEEP and DOT expand efforts to improve equitable access to the outdoors, ParkConneCT is teaming up with the DEEP No Child Left Inside program to pilot a program that aims to provide guided bus excursions to the program’s events and other recreational opportunities.

“In its fourth season of operation, the ParkConneCT program continues to offer residents a safe and reliable transportation option to some of Connecticut’s most beautiful state parks, beaches, and campgrounds,” CTDOT Public Transportation Bureau Chief Ben Limmer said . “We look forward to future collaborations with our state partners to expand access to outdoor recreational opportunities through stress-free and environmentally friendly public transit.”

For more information on ParkConneCT, visit ctparks.com/parkconnect .

Restore CT State Parks initiative is keeping infrastructure at state parks in good repair

Another way the state is supporting access to state parks is through the Restore CT State Parks initiative, an historic funding commitment led by Governor Lamont and the state legislature to address a backlog of parks infrastructure repairs.

To date, $70.7 million ($10.7 million of American Rescue Plan Act funds and $30 million of state bond fund authorizations in both FY 2024 and FY 2025) has been committed to support these important investments.

Some of the recent infrastructure improvement projects include new observation deck windows on Heublein Tower at Talcott Mountain State Park in Simsbury, ADA fishing access improvements at Salmon River State Forest in East Hampton, and the replacement of restroom facilities at American Legion State Forest in Barkhamsted.

For more information on Restore CT State Parks, visit portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/restore-ct-state-parks .

Campground reservations can be made now

All of the campgrounds at Connecticut’s state parks and forests are fully booked for Memorial Day weekend. However, there is still plenty of availability for the remainder of the summer season.

Reservations for all state campgrounds can be made online through Reserve America at connecticutstateparks.reserveamerica.com or by calling 1-877-668-CAMP (2267).

Lifeguards and swimming safety

Lifeguards will begin Memorial Day weekend at five state park beaches, including Hammonasset Beach State Park, Rocky Neck State Park, Silver Sands State Park, Sherwood Island State Park, and Black Rock State Park. Lifeguard coverage will increase throughout June to include additional days per week as lifeguards finish school and become available, and the addition of guarded coverage at Burr Pond State Park and Squantz Pond State Park. DEEP anticipates guards will be staffed fully prior to the July 4 holiday.

DEEP urges all residents and visitors getting in or on the water to prioritize water safety. Water temperatures continue to be cold this time of year, despite warmer air temperatures. There is an increased danger of hypothermia for swimmers, particularly children, who enter very cold water for any extended period.

Some helpful tips for those planning to enter the water:

  • Parents and caregivers: Watch your children. It only takes seconds for a child to drown, and this can occur silently.
  • Be aware of underwater hazards: Natural swimming areas can have sudden drop-offs, holes, large rocks, or tree roots that can’t be easily seen from the surface. Diving and jumping into these waters can be dangerous.
  • Swim only in the designated areas, and swim with a buddy.
  • Take a swimming lesson: Swimming skills can help save lives. People of all ages should consider signing up for a swimming class offered at local YMCAs or municipal parks and recreation departments.
  • Drink responsibly: Excessive alcohol consumption impairs judgment and reaction ability. Even prescription drugs may impair judgment. Swim sober.
  • Know your limits, including physical fitness and medical conditions.
  • Children, inexperienced swimmers, and all boaters should wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets.

Boating safety

DEEP manages 117 boat launches across Connecticut on ponds, lakes, rivers and Long Island Sound. Information on these facilities can be found online at portal.ct.gov/deep/boating/boating-and-paddling .

While access to all 117 state boat launches is available throughout the year, DEEP reminds boaters that late spring water temperatures are much colder than the air and can pose substantial dangers to unprepared recreational boaters. To prevent serious consequences from an unexpected cold-water immersion, paddlers should exercise caution by using proper equipment, practicing safety techniques, and avoiding dangerous situations. DEEP recommends that paddlers wear a personal floatation device all year round, but they are required by law to be worn from October 1 through May 31. Over the last five years, Connecticut families have grieved the loss of six paddlers during spring’s cold water boating season.

Some helpful tips for those planning to boat:

  • Always wear your life jacket : Connecticut law requires anyone in canoes, kayaks, rowboats, or stand-up paddleboards to wear a properly fitting life jacket between October 1 and May 31. If a boater ends up in the water, a life jacket will make someone more visible to other boaters and will keep them afloat, significantly improving their chances of survival.
  • Do not paddle alone : Always paddle with a partner, and know how to get back into the boat should someone fall overboard. When paddling with a partner, it is easier to get back into a boat or reach shore safely.
  • Dress for cold water : Paddlers should dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature. Water temperatures can vary greatly around the state during the spring, but all still are below 68 degrees Fahrenheit, which is considered cold water. Cold water immersion increases the risk of cold-water shock and involuntary gasp reflex, which is a leading cause of drowning.
  • File a float plan : Make a float plan that includes your planned boating location, expected time of departure and return, and who to call in case of emergency. Provide the plan to someone at home and call them once you are back ashore safely.
  • Maintain a proper lookout : Springtime can bring higher water levels in rivers which can dislodge items like docks, pilings, and trees. These can be found floating down rivers and into Long Island Sound. Boaters should be especially vigilant this time of year when they get out on the water to look for and avoid floating debris.

Check DEEP’s social media channels before you visit a state park

Anyone planning to visit a state park or boat launch is urged to check for capacity closures before visiting. This information is routinely posted on X (formerly Twitter) at @CTStateParks and @CTBoatingInfo .

Additionally, DEEP’s Water Quality Monitoring Program is back in action this season. Water quality information is published online at portal.ct.gov/DEEP/State-Parks/Recreation-Information/State-Swimming-Area-Water-Quality-Report .

Seasonal staff opportunities at state parks still available

Multiple seasonal jobs at Connecticut’s state parks, including positions for lifeguards, park rangers, maintenance, and more remain available this summer, particularly in the northwest corner of the state. For information on these opportunities, visit workoutside.ct.gov .

Air Travel Consumer Report: March 2024 Numbers

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) today released its Air Travel Consumer Report (ATCR) on airline operational data compiled for the month of March 2024 for on-time performance, mishandled baggage, mishandled wheelchairs and scooters, and 1st quarter oversales. The ATCR is designed to assist consumers with information on the quality of services provided by airlines.

For March 2024, 0.9% of flights were cancelled, lower than the 1.3% cancellation rate for March 2023 and the 2.0% cancellation rate for pre-pandemic March 2019.

DOT expects that airlines will operate flights as scheduled and that when they do not, airlines will provide consumers the services promised when a flight is cancelled or delayed because of an airline issue. After a two-year DOT push to improve the passenger experience, the 10 largest airlines now guarantee meals and free rebooking on the same airline and nine guarantee hotel accommodations. Consumer-friendly information regarding airline commitments to their customers is available on the Department’s Airline Customer Service Dashboard at FlightRights.Gov . DOT also pushed airlines to provide fee-free family seating and rolled out a new family seating dashboard that highlights the airlines that guarantee fee-free family seating, and those of the 10 largest that do not, making it easier for parents to avoid paying junk fees to sit with their children when they fly.

DOT recently announced two final rules that require airlines to provide automatic cash refunds to passengers when owed and protect consumers from costly surprise airline fees . These rules will significantly expand consumer protections in air travel, provide passengers an easier pathway to refunds when owed, and save consumers more than half a billion dollars every year in hidden and surprise junk fees. Provisions of the final rule on airline refunds were fortified through the FAA reauthorization bill that President Biden signed into law on May 16, 2024.

In addition, DOT is improving transportation for individuals with disabilities. In July 2023, DOT finalized a rule which requires airlines to make lavatories on new, single-aisle aircraft more accessible. Then, in February 2024, DOT issued a proposal to address other barriers that Americans who use a wheelchair encounter when it comes to air travel by, among other things, proposing to mandate enhanced training for airline employees and contractors who physically assist passenger with disabilities and handle passengers’ wheelchairs.

Further, when necessary, DOT takes enforcement action against airlines and ticket agents that fail to comply with the Department’s aviation consumer protection requirements. In 2023, DOT issued the largest fines in the history of the consumer protection office. This includes a $140 million penalty against Southwest Airlines for failing passengers during the 2022 holiday meltdown. That penalty, which was in addition to over $600 million DOT already ensured was refunded by Southwest to passengers, requires Southwest to establish a $90 million compensation system for passengers affected by significant delays and cancellations beginning April 30, 2024.  Additionally, DOT has helped return nearly $4 billion in refunds to travelers since the pandemic began.

In April, DOT announced the launch of the bipartisan Airline Passenger Protection Partnership with 18 state attorneys general to investigate airlines and ticket agents and hold them accountable when they violate aviation consumer protection laws. The partnership significantly expands the Department’s oversight capacity by establishing a new fast-track system prioritizing misconduct cases from state attorneys general who uncover unfair or deceptive airline practices. Through the partnership, DOT will provide state attorneys general with access to the federal complaint database and help ensure that airlines cooperate with state investigations.

Flight Operations

The 623,409 flights operated in March 2024 were 102.47% of the 608,387 flights operated in March 2023. Operated flights in March 2024 were up 2.47% year-over-year from the 608,387 flights operated in March 2023 and up 13.46% month-over-month from 549,439 flights operated in February 2024.

"U.S. Airlines Operated Domestic Flights: March 2022-MArch 2024. Operated=Scheduled - Canceled"

In March 2024, the 10 marketing network carriers reported 628,786 scheduled domestic flights, 5,377 (0.9%) of which were cancelled. In February 2024, airlines scheduled 552,691 domestic flights, 3,252 (0.6%) of which were cancelled. In March 2023, airlines scheduled 616,234 domestic flights, 7,847 (1.3%) of which were cancelled.

March 2024 On-Time Arrival

In March 2024, reporting marketing carriers posted an on-time arrival rate of 78.7%, down from 83.7% in February 2024 and up from 75.4% in March 2023. The year-to-date on-time arrival rate for 2024 is 78.3%.

Highest Marketing Carrier On-Time Arrival Rates March 2024 (ATCR Table 1)

  • Hawaiian Airlines – 87.2%
  • Delta Air Lines Network – 84.8%
  • United Airlines Network – 81.8%

Lowest Marketing Carrier On-Time Arrival Rates March 2024 (ATCR Table 1)

  • Frontier Airlines – 66.4%

  • Spirit Airlines – 69.6%

For the first three months of 2024, the reporting marketing carriers posted an on-time arrival rate of 78.31% up from 76.89% for the same period in 2023.

March 2024 Flight Cancellations

In March 2024, reporting marketing carriers cancelled 0.9% of their scheduled domestic flights, higher than the rate of 0.6% in February 2024 and lower than the rate of 1.3% in March 2023. The year-to-date cancellation rate for 2024 is 1.7%.

  • Delta Air Lines Network – 0.2%
  • Hawaiian Airlines – 0.6%
  • Allegiant Air – 0.6%

  • Frontier Airlines – 2.7%
  • Spirit Airlines – 1.7%
  • JetBlue Airways – 1.4%

For the first three months of 2024, the reporting marketing carriers posted a cancellation rate of 1.7%, equal to 1.7% for the same period in 2023.

Complaints About Airline Service

The release of air travel service complaint data in the Air Travel Consumer Report (ATCR) has been delayed primarily because of the continued high volume of complaints against airlines and ticket agents received by the Office of Aviation Consumer Protection (OACP) and the time needed to review and process these consumer complaints. The Department is investing in modernizing its system for handling consumer complaints with the support of a Technology Modernization Fund (TMF) investment to improve the customer experience for the tens of thousands of consumers who use the system each year and enable OACP to more effectively engage in oversight of the airline industry.

As DOT modernizes its system, given the continued high volume of air travel service complaints concerning airlines and ticket agents, DOT has revised how it processes consumer complaints received after June 1, 2023. From June 2023 until the date its system is modernized, DOT intends to revise the ATCR to display consumer submissions (complaints, inquiries, and opinions) as opposed to complaints for this period. The Department will continue to display civil rights complaints in the ATCR in a similar manner as before and anticipates publishing submission and civil rights complaint numbers for June 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023 in June 2024.

Tarmac Delays

In March 2024, airlines reported six tarmac delays of more than three hours on domestic flights, compared to 10 tarmac delays of more than three hours on domestic flights reported in February 2024. In March 2024, airlines reported one tarmac delay of more than four hours on an international flight, compared to two tarmac delays of more than four hours on international flights reported in February 2024.

Airlines are required to have and adhere to assurances that they will not allow aircraft to remain on the tarmac for more than three hours for domestic flights and four hours for international flights without providing passengers the option to deplane, subject to exceptions related to safety, security, and Air Traffic Control related reasons. An exception also exists for departure delays if the airline begins to return the aircraft to a suitable disembarkation point to deplane passengers by those times.

The Department investigates extended tarmac delays.

Mishandled Baggage

In March 2024, reporting marketing carriers handled 43.1 million bags and posted a mishandled baggage rate of 0.52%, higher than the rate of 0.48% in February 2024, but lower than the rate of 0.58% in March 2023.

For the first quarter of 2024, the carriers posted a mishandled baggage rate of 0.58%, lower than the first quarter 2023 rate of 0.64%.

The Department began displaying the mishandled baggage data as a percentage (i.e., per 100 bags enplaned) in January 2022. This is consistent with the manner that the mishandled wheelchairs and scooters rate is calculated and displayed.     In the prior three calendar year reports (2019 to 2021), the Department calculated the mishandled baggage rate based on the number of mishandled bags per 1,000 checked bags.

Mishandled Wheelchairs and Scooters

In March 2024, reporting marketing carriers reported checking 65,793 wheelchairs and scooters and mishandling 859 for a rate of 1.31% mishandled wheelchairs and scooters, higher than the rate of 1.30% mishandled in February 2024 and lower than the rate of 1.33% mishandled in March 2023.

For the first quarter of 2024, the carriers posted a mishandled wheelchair and scooter rate of 1.36%, lower than the rate of 1.40% in the first quarter of 2023.

To address many of the significant barriers and challenges experienced by passengers who use wheelchairs, the Department has proposed a rulemaking that, if adopted as proposed would make it an automatic violation of the Department’s Air Carrier Access Act regulations for airlines to mishandle a passenger’s wheelchair. This Notice of Proposed Rulemaking would also enhance training requirements for airline personnel who provide hands-on transfer assistance to passengers and handle wheelchairs. The proposal is available at https://www.regulations.gov , docket number DOT-OST-2022-0144.

Bumping/Oversales

Bumping/oversales data, unlike other air carrier data, are reported quarterly rather than monthly. For the first quarter of 2024, the 10 U.S. reporting marketing carriers posted an involuntary denied boarding, or bumping, rate of 0.27 per 10,000 passengers, lower than both the rate of 0.29 in the first quarter of 2023 and higher than the rate of 0.20 in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Incidents Involving Animals

As part of its IT modernization, DOT’s Office of Aviation Consumer Protection (OACP) is improving the options for covered carriers to submit their monthly and annual Reports on Incidents Involving Animals During Air Transport. While the new system is being developed, OACP is permitting covered carriers to delay submission of reports on incidents involving animals during air transport. Annual data on such incidents will be published when DOT receives carriers’ complete submissions of the 2023 data.

In March 2024, carriers reported zero incidents involving the death, injury, or loss of an animal while traveling by air, down from the two reports filed in February 2024, and equal to the zero reports filed in March 2023.

Consumers may file air travel consumer or civil rights complaints online at   https://secure.dot.gov/air-travel-complaint , or they may mail a complaint to the Office of Aviation Consumer Protection, U.S. Department of Transportation, C-70, W96-432, 1200 New Jersey Avenue, SE, Washington, DC 20590.

The ATCR and other aviation consumer matters of interest to the public can be found at https://www.transportation.gov/airconsumer .

TSA is prepared for the expected increase in Memorial Day Weekend travel from Richmond International Airport

press release tourism

RICHMOND, Va., -- As Memorial Day Weekend approaches, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is prepared to handle an increase in the number of travelers who will be flying out of Richmond International Airport (RIC) and airports nationwide.

For the first time ever, TSA will likely be screening more than 3 million passengers nationwide in a single day at some point this summer. We have already recorded four top 10 busiest days this month, with this Thursday and Friday before Memorial Day expected to see more than 2.9 individuals screened at checkpoints across the nation.

“Here at Richmond, we expect to see approximately 1,000 more travelers per day for Memorial Day Weekend than we see in an average weekend,” said Robin “Chuck” Burke, TSA’s Federal Security Director for Richmond. This is an 11 percent increase over 2023 volumes. “The most important things that travelers can do is to get to the airport early and come prepared to go through the checkpoint screening process."

TSA continues to deploy new technologies at checkpoints to enhance security, which is why it is important for travelers to listen to and follow the guidance offered by TSA officers. TSA continues to upgrade all of its primary screening technologies for identity verification and carry-on bag screening. These critical technology investments improve security effectiveness; increase security efficiency; and enhance the passenger experience. These technologies include computed tomography (CT) and credential authentication technology (CAT or CAT-2). The CT units provide a 3D image of the contents of carry-on bags at checkpoints. The CAT units scan a traveler’s photo identification, confirm the traveler’s identity as well as their flight details. The new generation of CAT units, referred to as CAT-2, have the same capabilities, but are also equipped with a camera that captures a real-time photo of the traveler. CAT-2 compares the traveler’s photo on the ID against the in-person, real-time photo. Once the CAT-2 confirms the match, a security officer verifies and the traveler can proceed through the checkpoint, without ever exchanging a boarding pass. The photo is then deleted. Travelers who do not wish to participate in the facial matching process can opt out in favor of an alternative identity verification process.

TSA asks that the travelling public do their part in efficient checkpoint screening by arriving to the airport two hours prior to their scheduled flight departure and know what they can – and cannot pack – in their carry-on luggage.

TSA reminds passengers to always know the contents of their carry-on bag prior to coming to the security checkpoint. TSA has multiple resources available to passengers to help them determine whether an item is permitted in carry-on baggage, checked baggage, either or neither. Travelers can use the “ Can I Bring?” feature on the TSA website or on the free downloadable myTSA app . Travelers can also tweet to @AskTSA or send a text message (275-872) if they have a travel question or are unsure if an item is allowed through security in a carry-on bag. Just snap a picture or send a question and get real-time assistance.

TSA officers will offer guidance to travelers at the checkpoint to help ensure a smooth transition through the security checkpoints. (TSA photo)

Individuals who are planning to travel this summer should consider enrolling in TSA PreCheck ®. The popular expedited screening program allows travelers to leave on their shoes, jackets, belts and enables them to keep their electronics and 3-1-1 bags in their carry-on bags. Teenagers aged 13-17 may accompany their TSA PreCheck-enrolled parents or guardians through TSA PreCheck screening when traveling on the same reservation and when the TSA PreCheck indicator appears on the teen’s boarding pass. Children 12 and under may still accompany an enrolled parent or guardian when traveling through the TSA PreCheck lanes anytime without restriction.

This summer is also the ideal time to get a REAL ID drivers license. We are one year out from the REAL ID deadline. Beginning May 7, 2025, if you plan to use your state-issued ID or license to fly within the U.S., make sure it is REAL ID compliant.

Travelers should also keep these tips in mind while traveling:

  • Do not attempt to bring a firearm through a TSA checkpoint; doing so compromises the safety and security of other passengers and our officers in the checkpoint.  Passengers who do attempt to bring a firearm through a checkpoint can expect to receive a civil penalty (fines may be as high as $15,000) and lose eligibility for TSA PreCheck. Additionally, local law enforcement will be called and because these passengers may present additional risk beyond the firearm, they will receive enhanced screening.
  • Get to the airport early. Travelers should arrive a minimum of two hours before their scheduled domestic flights and three hours before scheduled international flights. Roadways near airports are going to be crowded. It is going to take longer to locate an available parking space at the airport. Airline check-in counters will be busy. This is all before you even get to the security checkpoint. If you find yourself waiting in a security checkpoint lane, use that time to your advantage. That’s the ideal time to remove items from your pockets and place them into a carry-on bag. It’s also the time to get out your ID and boarding pass so you’re not fumbling in your wallet for your ID when you step up to the TSA travel document checking podium.
  • Know before you go. Travelers need to know what can and cannot go in their carry-on bag, from firearms to oversize liquids. Passengers will spend more time in the security checkpoint if their carry-on items trigger an alarm because it results in TSA’s need to resolve the alarm by opening the carry-on bag to determine what triggered the alarm. Use TSA’s tools for your resources. TSA offers several ways for travelers to find out if an item is permitted in a carry-on bag, checked bag, either or neither and TSA has just launched a new higher level of assistance for travelers with questions about airport security screening procedures. Airline passengers may now send a text message using any mobile device to “AskTSA” (275-872). A virtual assistant is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. For more complicated questions, @AskTSA staff are available daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Twitter and on Facebook Messenger. The TSA web site has a feature on the homepage called “What can I bring?” Type in the name of the item and it will let you  know if it should be packed in a checked bag or carry-on bag. The same handy feature is available on the free downloadable MyTSA app . The MyTSA app gives users 24/7 access to the most frequently requested airport security information on any mobile device, including a searchable database that will let you know whether an item can be packed in a carry-on bag, checked bag, either or neither. The app also identifies delay information and current weather conditions at your favorite airports nationwide.
  • Bring an acceptable ID. Before heading to the airport, travelers should make sure they have  acceptable identification .  And remember, the REAL ID deadline is less than a year away.
  • Request passenger support. Travelers or families of passengers with disabilities and/or medical conditions may call the  TSA Cares  helpline toll free at 855-787-2227 at least 72 hours prior to travel with any questions about screening procedures and to find out what to expect at the security checkpoint. TSA Cares also arranges assistance at the checkpoint for travelers with specific needs.
  • Never leave a suitcase, roller bag, laptop bag, shopping bag, backpack or any other item unattended. And if you come across an unattended item, please alert an airport official. If you See Something, Say Something®.
