15 Best Things to Do in Markham (Ontario, Canada)

Part of the Greater Toronto Area, Markham is a melting pot of cultures, a high-tech hub and a place where old meets new. It is a city of rolling hills, suburban neighbourhoods, towering skyscrapers and 19th century homes.

Markham is a vibrant city with several cultural sights, recreational facilities, parks and heritage sights. However, for some reason it is often overlooked by tourists, even though there is plenty to see and do here.

If you are ever in the Greater Toronto Area, a visit to Markham is a must. Be it for a day or a few days, there is something here for everyone.

Lets explore the best things to do in Markham :

1. Explore historic neighbourhoods

Main Street

Markham is very unique, as it is an eclectic city of old and new. The old neighbourhoods in the city are extremely picturesque and well worth wondering around.

Unionville is arguably the best area to explore, which dates back over 200 years. It is a charming neighbourhood that is made up of beautiful homes, great restaurants and fabulous boutiques.

Markham Village is another great community to walk around, especially along Main Street. This street is lined with historic homes that have been converted into local shops and restaurants.

2. Wander around a museum

Markham Museum

Markham Museum is an open-air museum that tells the story of the city’s history and growth. It is made up of nearly 30 buildings, most of which are historic buildings that depict what life used to be like in the past.

The museum has numerous artefacts on display from excavations that were done in Markham between 1968 and 2009. There are also temporary exhibitions that take place throughout the year.

The museum also has lovely gardens that are great for enjoying a picnic on a warm spring or summer day. If you are visited with the kids, enrol them in one of the day programs.

3. Go for a bike ride

Joyride 150

At Joyride 150 you can ride all year, regardless of the weather! This indoor bike park features ramps, skinnies and lines, and even has an 800m mountain bike trail.

There are areas for all levels, from beginners to advanced mountain bikers. There is even a half pipe, street-inspired rails and steps, and a BMX-style area.

After enjoying the adventure in the indoor bike park, relax in the lounge with a toasty or a slice of pizza. Joyride 150 is open 7 days a week, with the weekends being open until 10pm!

4. Spend the afternoon in a park

Toogood Park

Toogood Park is a 330-hectare park that is famous for its pond. The park is located in Unionville and is a great place for an afternoon stroll.

There is a trail that encircles the pond, which is a popular hiking spot. The park also features rocky hills and lovely bridges, as well as having some beautiful vegetation.

There are also several other parks within Markham. In fact, there are over 50 of them, including German Mills Settlers Park, Berczy Park and Crosby Memorial Park.

5. Enjoy indoor recreational activities

Markham Pan Am Centre

Markham is home to a plethora of recreational and community centres, all of which offer some sort of indoor activities. Most of them are located in the city’s most populated areas.

If you want to go for a swim, head to Angus Glen Community Centre, Milliken Community Centre or the Markham Pan Am Centre. To play a game of squash, go to the Centennial Community Centre.

The R.J. Clatworthy Community Centre, Markham Village Community Centre and Mount Joy Community Centre all boast indoor skating rinks, while Thornhill Community Centre has a track and a gym.

6. Visit a heritage railway station

Locust Hill Station

One of the oldest in the city is the Markham GO Station that was built in 1871. It was designed in classic Canadian Railway Style with elements of the Vernacular-Carpenter Gothic style of architecture.

Just as old is the Unionville GO Station, which today is used as a community centre. It is designed in the same style as the Markham Go Station.

Newer, but just as significant, is the Locust Hill Station. This station was built in 1936 and today is part of the Markham Museum.

7. Shop till you drop

Village Market

There are a number of great places to spend your money in Markham and a plethora of things waiting for you to buy. No shopaholic will be bored here.

One of the most interested places to shop is the Village Market, which is a Chinese market with over 170-family-run stores. This is the place to go for anything made in China.

Pacific mall is another Chinese mall, which was designed to resemble Pacific Place in Hong Kong. If you are looking for international chains, head to CF Markville.

8. Play a round of golf

The York Downs Golf & Country Club

There are 9 different golf courses in Markham; 4 of which are private and 5 that are public. This means that any avid golfer can keep busy for days on end.

The York Downs Golf & Country Club is the most prestigious in the city, which is a member’s only club complete with a dress code. The Robbie Robinson and Doug Carrick designed Bayview Country Club is a great alternative.

One of the best public courses in Markham is Angus Glen Golf Club, which has hosted numerous PGA Tour events. Remington Parkview Golf Club and Markham Green Golf Club are also excellent.

9. Go to the theatre

Unionville Theatre Company

There are a few fantastic theatres in Markham where you can spend an evening enjoying a show. Stand-up comedy, plays, dance theatre and musicals can all be seen.

The main theatres in Markham are the Markham Little Theatre, Unionville Theatre Company and FLATO Markham Theatre. Check the schedule at any of these theatres to see what’s on while you are in town.

If the symphony is more your cup of tea, then head to the Kindred Spirits Orchestra. If you are with the kids, be sure to go a show at the Markham Youth Theatre.

10. Have fun at a fair

Markham Fair

If you are in Markham (or anywhere in the GTA) around Thanksgiving then you must go to the Markham Fair. Not only is this one of the oldest county fairs in the country, but it is also Canada’s largest community-based volunteer organization.

The Markham Fair takes place the week leading up to Thanksgiving. It features midway rides, games, live bands and shows, including a horse show, a demolition derby and monster trucks.

In addition to all of the fair’s exciting events, it also has a gymnastic demonstration, sheep shearing demonstration and cooking demonstrations. There is also a farm, food stalls and vendors that sell everything from vaporizers to homemade pies.

11. Gaze at art

Frederick Horsman Varley Art Gallery

If you are an art lover a visit to the Frederick Horsman Varley Art Gallery is a must. The gallery is named after one of the famous ‘Group of Seven’ because it displays over 100 pieces by the artist.

The Frederick Horsman Varley Art Gallery opened its doors in 1977. It not only displays work by Frederick Horseman but also other local, national and international artists.

If you would rather support the local art community, visit the McKay Art Centre. This gallery is housed in a historic house that today is rented to local artists to display their work.

12. Go for a hike

Milne Dam Conservation Park

Milne Dam Conservation Park is part of the Rouge Park, which is Canada’s only national urban park. The park features 2.3 kilometres of trails that are great for any hiker.

The trail is a natural packed trail with picnic areas and washrooms along the way. It is a fantastic opportunity to breathe in the fresh air and hopefully spot some wildlife.

There are a plethora of migratory birds that call the 123 hectare park home. There is also some stunning vegetation, including wetlands, forests and open spaces.

13. Enjoy the food

Chinese food

Markham is a melting pot of cultures, so with this comes a diverse range of cuisine. Basically nearly any type of food you are craving you will find it in Markham.

Unionville and Old Markham’s high streets both have a plethora of dining options, some of which are the finest in the city. Dine on Mexican, Indian, Japanese or Italian, or enjoy a pint and pub grub at a typical English pub.

Chinese food is a must while in Markham, as it has some of the most authentic restaurants around. If known food chains is your thing, you will find a good selection here.

There are great restaurants across the city, but these are some of the best malls and plazas for Asian food in Markham:

  • First Markham Place : an Asian shopping mall with a large food court inside and sit-down restaurants outside
  • Downtown Markham : a new neighbourhood filled with condos and modern restaurants
  • Times Square: a shopping plaza filled with casual Asian restaurants, bakeries, and shops
  • Commerce Gate: a shopping plaza similar to Times Square

First Markham Place food court in Markham, Ontario

  • Shop at First Markham Place

I feel like I’ve definitely walked through First Markham Place (also known as FMP) at least 100 times in my life.

My parents worked in the area, and it was pretty much one of the only places to hang out back when I was in high school over a decade ago!

It’s an Asian mall with everything from specialty food shops, to ~kawaii~ toys and accessories, to hair salons.

Crispy Shrimp Burger on beet bun from Hong Bo Burger & Poutine inside the First Markham Place food court in Markham, Ontario

There’s even a food court with all kinds of Asian food. It used to be one of the only spots to grab cheap bubble tea, besides Pacific Mall!

Tbh the restaurants in the First Markham Place plaza are what you need to check out, and here are some great ones:

  • The Owl of Minerva ( Korean )
  • Katsuya ( Japanese )
  • Mabu Generation (Taiwanese)
  • Sugar Marmalade (Taiwanese desserts)

Oomomo store in Markham, Ontario

It’s also worth stopping into Oomomo while you’re at FMP, which is a ginormous department store with all kinds of affordable Japanese products, including everything from skincare to food.

LOCATION: 3255 Hwy 7, Markham, ON

Go Place in Markham, Ontario

  • Have a spa day at Go Place

You might’ve seen Go Place pop up on your Instagram feed, and if you haven’t, you’ll definitely want to pay it a visit.

It’s a super chic wellness spa with all kinds of different themed specialty rooms, including a volcanic rock room, ice room, and jade room.

The fee is $68.95 per adult 16 and over and $45 per child aged 12 to 15, and it’s a great spot for a date, girls’ day, or birthday gift.

You can also get massages and skin treatments for additional fees, and there’s also a bath house, gym, and Japanese restaurant inside the spa.

They’re located at First Markham Place where the Cineplex used to be, with over 68,000 square feet of space!

LOCATION: 3275 Hwy 7 Unit 2, Markham, ON

Food court inside Pacific Mall in Markham

  • Shop at Pacific Mall

PMall was like the cool, older sister to FMP back in the day.

It’s a lot bigger, with a lot more little shops that you can stop into and a lot more food options.

It’s actually the largest indoor Asian shopping mall in North America, and is supposedly even the largest Asian shopping mall in the western world!

Daruma Neko and Maneki Neko figurines at Pacific Mall in Markham

You can find a lot of specialty stores selling things like tech accessories, cheongsams and qipaos (Chinese wedding dresses ), and Daruma Neko and Maneki Neko figurines.

The mall is not as busy as it used to be, especially because of online stores like Amazon and Aliexpress, but it’s still fun to walk through and shop and eat.

Onigiri and dumplings at food court inside Pacific Mall in Markham

My mom didn’t let me come here in high school lmao, but I did sneak here once or twice 😬 (sorry mom.)

During the summer months, they also host night markets and events here like the massive Taste of Asia festival!

LOCATION: 4300 Steeles Ave E, Markham, ON

Niwatei in Markham's J-Town

  • Explore J-Town

I can’t believe I only discovered J-Town in adulthood, but I’ve been at least a dozen times since I found out about it.

It’s the ultimate destination for all things Japanese, from food, to groceries, to manga!

During the summer months, they even have weekend sidewalk sales where you can shop from local vendors.

Some of my favourite spots are Tanuki (Japanese-inspired brunch ), Yuzu No Ki Cafe & Patisserie (Japanese café and bakery ), and Sasaki Fine Pastry (best mochi in the GTA).

You’ll also need to stop into Heisei Mart to stock up on Japanese groceries (or snacks)!

LOCATION: 3160 Steeles Ave E, Markham, ON

Main Street Unionville in Markham during Christmas season

  • Wander through Main Street Unionville

Main Street Unionville is definitely the cutest and most Instagrammable neighbourhood in Markham.

It’s a historic neighbourhood filled with great restaurants and adorable boutiques, and it’s a local hotspot during the warm summer months!

Stop by the Old Firehall Confectionary for Kawartha Dairy ice cream, or hit up The Alley for bubble tea .

Old Firehall Confectionary in Unionville, Markham

Next Door is amazing spot for brunch and Jake’s on Main is great for drinks (with a fantastic patio )!

The annual Unionville Festival is held here every summer, where you can enjoy all kinds of food, shopping, and activities.

Main Street Unionville is also super nice to visit during the holidays with all the pretty festive lights and wintery decorations!

  • Admire art at the Varley Art Gallery

I actually had no idea the Varley Art Gallery existed until recent years, and I’d been to Main Street Unionville dozens of times before I found out about it!

It’s a gallery named after one of the Group of Seven artists, Frederick Varley.

The gallery space is actually larger than it looks from the outside of the building, and they’ve got some cool exhibitions and works in their permanent collection.

Admission to the gallery is free, but they do accept donations!

LOCATION: 216 Main St Unionville, Unionville, ON

Toogood Pond Park walking trail in Markham, Ontario

  • Stroll around Toogood Pond Park

In the mood for a romantic outdoor stroll or nice family walk?

Toogood Pond Park is one of the nicest parks in Markham, and you can take a leisurely stroll around the pond that sits here.

Toogood Pond Park walking trail in Markham, Ontario

The walking trail features forest, boardwalks, and pretty pond views.

There’s a parking lot specifically for the park, or you can park in Main Street Unionville and walk over.

Definitely grab a coffee for the walk at PawStory Cafe in Main Street Unionville !

LOCATION: 58 Sciberras Rd, Unionville, ON

Trapped escape room in Markham, Ontario

  • Do an escape room at Trapped

If you haven’t done an escape room before, you’re definitely missing out.

Trapped has 5 different themed escape rooms for 2 to 10 people, including a Death Note one for my fellow anime fans .

Adam and I did the Death Note escape room here many years ago, and we definitely wouldn’t have been able to complete it if he hadn’t watched the show before – it helps to have seen the anime!

My sister and I also did a creepy one where they had “dead” bodies (just mannequins), but I don’t think they have it anymore.

They’ve actually grown to have locations across Canada, which is really awesome!

LOCATION: 3137 Hwy 7, Markham, ON

Board games at Omescape Markham

  • Play board games at Omescape

Omescape is a full-on game hub, and you can play escape rooms, board games, or chase tag.

Choose between 8 different escape rooms for 3 to 10 players!

The board game pass is $12.50 plus tax per person, which gives you access to almost 300 board games and video games for the day.

Bubble tea from OmMyCup at Omescape in Markham, Ontario

The board game pass also includes a drink at their in-store bubble tea shop, OmMyCup.

We’ve tried the Black Royal Flush, which is a sesame milk tea with grass jelly, and the Hello Kitty, which is a brown sugar oat milk tea.

Both are delicious, but the Black Royal Flush is our favourite between the two!

They don’t really have food there, but Omescape is located right beside Diana’s Seafood, where you can enjoy fresh oysters!

LOCATION: 7501 Woodbine Ave #7, Markham, ON

Demetres in Markham, Ontario

  • Explore Downtown Markham

Downtown Markham is a new and super modern neighbourhood filled with condos, restaurants , and even a merry-go-round for the kiddos.

They’re still in the process of building tons of new condos here, and York University’s new campus is actually opening here in 2023.

Cineplex Downtown Markham

In the meantime, there’s plenty to do in Downtown Markham , including catching a flick at the Cineplex VIP Theatre or dining at Lanna Cuisine for authentic Thai food!

They also host a lot of festivals in Downtown Markham, including the annual summer Night It Up! festival, an Asian night market filled with all kinds of delicious eats.

Sadly, Night it Up! is not happening this year, but they host other events like fireworks and exotic car shows in Downtown Markham!

Pacific Mall Summer Carnival in Markham

  • Visit a night market

One of my favourite things about Markham is that there are so many night markets.

If you haven’t been to a night market before, it’s literally a foodie’s heaven.

They’re typically inspired by night markets in Asia, and you’ll find delicious eats like barbecued skewers, stinky tofu (yes, it’s actually stinky), and bubble tea.

Tornado potato from Pacific Mall Summer Carnival in Markham

Aside from food, you’ll often find games like claw machines and vendors selling ~kawaii~ goodies.

Some annual night markets you can find in Markham include the Pacific Mall Summer Carnival, Taste of Asia, Lucky Lion Night Market, and Night it Up!

Taste of Asia at Pacific Mall in Markham

Be sure to bring cash to these night markets, as most vendors won’t accept cards.

I would budget around $50 per person for food and activities!

Tbr® inspection report:, markham museum reviews.

My family went there today and we learned so much about Markham history. Ms. Cadi is excellent tour guide. We also played the mini putt . We have a good time. We will come back again! Thanks.
We recently had our wedding ceremony and reception at the Markham Museum. Lillian and her team were incredible throughout the whole process. The day of the ceremony it rained on and off and the staff at Markham museum did everything possible to make our outdoor ceremony possible and beautiful. We are grateful to the staffs and everyone involved in making our day special. Thank you so much.
We had our wedding photos done here and it was a fantastic choice. Not only were there several great locations for photos but our guide (Mike) was incredibly friendly and helpful. There is a cost to take pictures here, but it was very much worth it.

Swan Lake Park

Swan Lake Park offers a harmonious fusion of natural splendor, educational prospects through school tours, a wide array of collections, and a dedicated commitment to safeguarding wildlife. Regrettably, Swan Lake occupies the 15th spot among 17 man-made urban lakes in Ontario in terms of water quality, consistently holding a hypereutrophic classification, the lowest possible rating. The park takes pride in its reparation initiatives, cultivating a strong sense of ecological accountability. Central to the park's essence is a hub of nature interpretation and education, interwoven with an intricate network of pathways and cycling trails. The expanse also encompasses a generous free play zone for unhurried leisure, while the sandy beach section caters to sun-soaked relaxation and lively beach volleyball, creating an optimal fusion of educational pursuits and recreational delights. UNIQUE FACTS: • Clean Water • Healthy Species • Long Term Sustainability.

SWAN LAKE PARK REVIEWS

A beautiful, quiet park good for hiking, running, or cycling. You will be accompanied by shorebirds. There is a children playground nearby. However, no picnic place. I didn't see swan in this season. Believe they will be back next spring. Updates: I came back in this summer. Yes, they do have swans.
Great park! The views are really great! Very nice quiet park vibes. It probably takes 45 minutes to circumnavigate the lake. The paths are nice and smooth. Great for strollers and longboards/skateboards. There is a great lookout on the peninsula. There is some elevation there and the path turns into dirt and gravel on one section of the lake. Great lake and park!
This park is more isolated and more preserved. It is quiet most of the time and offers a hiking-like experience at the door step. I really enjoy this park as there are also playgrounds for the kids nearby.

JOYRIDE 150 INDOOR BIKE PARK REVIEWS

This was all around a great time. We drove over an hour to go and I will be going back soon. My son's chain came off his bike and they fixed it for him no problem free of charge! Staff as well as other riders were all so helpful and polite. I wish there had of been more food options but next time I will pack a picnic. We'll done joyride150.
Great facilities and service. Brought our ~2.5 yr old toddler for the first time and she loved it on her strider. Wasn't busy at all for a 10am on a Saturday, but slowly had more kids trickling in. Plenty of small little hills and balancing beams for her to gain her confidence and increase her skill/speed. Will look into coming more regularly and get their packaged / half yr deals.
We’ve been going to JR since my son was 2 and now my 3 year old daughter loves it too. Definitely family friendly, for all the different levels of riding. The owners are super nice and support the community, and the GM is one of a kind.
