Two stalactites from Paradise Cave in Phong Nha Vietnam

Located in Phong Nha-Ke bang National Park, Paradise Cave is considered to be the longest dry cave in Asia . It’s 31.4 kilometers long with a height of over 70 meters filled with beautiful stalactites and stalagmites featuring a wooden boardwalk for visitors to explore safely.

In this guide, we are going to show you everything you need to know about visiting Paradise Cave in Phong Nha, Vietnam.

Our Phong Nha Experience

mark and kristen in paradise cave Phong Nha with amazing rock formations behind

We visited Paradise Cave in  October 2018  as part of our 18 month trip around the world. Since we wanted to visit multiple caves in Phong Nha, we decided to  book a combo tour   to Dark Cave and Paradise Cave. Read more about us .

To make planning easy for you, we’re going to walk you through how to get to Paradise Cave, best way to visit as well as what we liked and didn’t like. If you have never explored a cave, we highly recommend you add Phong Na to your Vietnam itinerary .

What Is Paradise Cave?

Paradise Cave aerial view with visitors walking along the boardwalks

Known as Thien Durong Cave in Vietnamese, Paradise Cave was discovered in 2005 by a local. The British Cave Research Association followed up the discovery by exploring and surveying its entirety.

Initially, the team only explored the first 5km (3.1mi). But further exploration revealed the cave’s length to be a little over 31km (19.3mi).

Prior to the discovery of Paradise Cave, Phong Nha Cave was believed to be the longest cave system in the region. Paradise cave has a maximum height of 72 meters and stretches across to 150 meters at its widest point.

And Paradise is now widely acknowledged as being more spectacular than Phong Nha Cave . If you want to visit both Phong Nha and Paradise Cave, book this tour here .

We think one of the the most interesting things about Paradise cave is the entrance . When you visit, you will walk through the small opening which is much narrower than you would imagine.

The main entrance is just wide enough for a wooden staircase without much room to spare. However, once you penetrate the entrance, the cavern opens up to reveal staggeringly beautiful stalactites and stalagmites.

Hence the name Paradise .

Imagine pouring molten gold from the ceiling, then at any moment you decide to click your finger and it all freezes in an instant. That is what the astonishing 400 million year old formations look like in Paradise Cave.

The scientists were right to award it the label of Paradise. It’s truly breathtaking inside. There are cleverly positioned spot lights, illuminating jaw dropping formations .

These lights will allow you to see the intricacies of the formations without blinding you or sacrificing the dramatic feeling of being inside a cave.

Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is home to the biggest adventure caves in the world , but they come at a premium. For travelers lacking time or budget, the perfect substitute is the stunning Paradise Cave.

How To Get To Phong Nha

Access to Phong Nha has seen dramatic improvements over the last decade. The rural town and its caves have boomed in popularity. Transport options have increased in turn, making it much easier for travelers to access the National Park.

You have three main options for Phong Nha:

  • Sleeper bus directly to Phong Nha
  • Train from anywhere in Vietnam to Dong Hoi train station
  • Fly into Dong Hoi airport

For our trip, we took a sleeper bus to Phong Nha. Use 12go Asia to see your best options depending on your origin. Here you will find the both the cheapest and quickest options for bus, train or plane.

Alternatively, you can travel to Dong Hoi and take a day tour into Phong Nha to explore the famous caves with transport included. Perfect if you’re short on time and only have one spare day.

To reach Paradise Cave from town, take the DT-20 past the Botanic Gardens and join Ho Chi Minh Highway (QL-15) until you see signs to turn left to Paradise Cave. There will be a nominal parking fee of around US$ 0.2.

You can hire a scooter in town or at your accommodation. When you return to town, we recommend you continue around the loop in the opposite direction.

The views over the deep green dense blanket are mesmerizing and worth it even if you do not enter the cave. Use our interactive map above for directions .

Best Way To Visit Paradise Cave

sign showing walking path and buggy path to paradise cave entrance

You can visit Paradise Cave independently or with a tour. Hours of operation are typically from 7:00am-4:30pm. Personally,  we decided to visit with a tour  because we also wanted to visit Dark Cave .

Check out the recent reviews on TripAdvisor to see if Paradise Cave is a place you want to see in Vietnam.

If you plan to visit Paradise Cave on your own, we recommend you  plan to arrive early in the day  to avoid the crowds and tour groups. The entrance fee will be 250,000 VND (about $10.30) per person.

Tour groups will begin to arrive around 9:00am and continue until 1:00pm . That’s when the tour groups will move onto the Dark Cave. Alternatively, you can wait until later in the afternoon to arrive once the tours finish.

Booking a tour is more expensive, but it’s more convenient. Our tour cost us $55 per person which included Paradise Cave, Dark Cave, 8 Ladies Cave as well as transport to and from our hotel in Phong Nha.

You can book tours with your Hotel or  directly online here .

This is a  popular tour with Kook  which combines Paradise Cave and Phong Nha Cave. If you want to read reviews and see a few more options, here are popular Paradise Cave Tours:

What Can You See Inside Paradise Cave?

Large stalactites lit up by numerous lights

A board walk plunges down into Paradise Cave with numerous left and right turns. The same boardwalk acts as your viewing platform the entire 1km (0.6mi) walk to the end and back the same way.

Shimmering limestone rock formations gently illuminate under dim light . The intricate details of other worldly stalactites and stalagmites appear unreal as you stare up at them.

Millions of years from flooding and receding water carved out what we can see today. You can easily walk the short footpath and be out within 20 minutes.

But that would be a shame so take your time when exploring Paradise Cave and admire all of the beautiful rock formations.

You might be wondering what the difference is between a stalactite and stalagmite?

We had the same question! Stalactites grow down from the ceiling of the cave and stalagmites grow up from floor of the cave.

You will find small detours leading to various points of interest throughout the boardwalk. It will transport you to a made up world.

Tips For Your Visit

A boardwalk filled with visitors inside Paradise Cave Vietnam

To make the most of your time, here are a few things to consider for your visit to Paradise Cave:

  • It’s easy to combine Paradise Cave with Dark Cave or Phong Nha Cave . If you’re short on time, you can book a tour or rent a moped and do it yourself. We met many people doing both.
  • You will have to park about 1.6km (1.0mi) away from the entrance whether you visit independently or though a tour. There is also a bit of a climb up before you find the tiny opening in the rock.
  • You can be driven from the parking lot to the main entrance in a golf cart . This is an additional option if you paid for a tour, but we all opted to walk.
  • Bring extra water . Vietnam can be extremely hot and humid so you will need it for your visit.
  • If you are traveling with kids , Paradise cave is a great option . You can only access this cave via a boardwalks so it’s very safe for children.

Paradise Cave is located just off the Ho Chi Minh Highway around 24km (15mi) from Phong Nha village where the majority of people will be based. It will take 45 minutes to 1 hour if you drive yourself from town by scooter safely.

Travel Tip : If you drive yourself, go around in the loop we mentioned above because this region is packed full of gorgeous scenery and the drive will be incredible.

Pros And Cons To Paradise Cave

Still on the fence about visiting Paradise Cave? Here are a few pros and cons to help sway your decision:

  • Short boardwalk
  • Great for those travelers short on time
  • Perfect for all age groups
  • Numerous stairs which may be difficult for some travelers
  • Visitors have to stick to the boardwalk
  • Tours are extremely touristy

Before booking our tour, we priced out how much it would cost us. This might help you decide if you want to visit independently or with a tour:

Tour including hotel pick up and drop off, transport to 8 Ladies Cave, Dark Cave and Paradise Cave, lunch and alcohol plus an excellent tour guide cost $110  for us both ( $55 each).

Going alone as a couple, you would spend about $5 for scooter + $3 for fuel + $12 (x2 = $24 ) for Dark Cave + $10 (x2 = $20 ) for Paradise Cave + $1 for both parking spots + $6 for lunch = $59 for 2 people.

You could save about half the price by doing this route alone if you are on a tight budget. But it would also require you to find the caves yourself and potentially lose out on learning about the caves from a guide.

In Conclusion

Large wooden staircase inside a cavern in vietnam

So is Paradise Cave worth visiting?

Yes! According to TripAdvisor , Paradise Cave is the top rated cave in Phong Nha . It’s one of the most easily accessible caves in the region due to its location and wooden boardwalk.

We think Paradise Cave is perfect for just about anyone including children and older travelers. Visitors will have to walk up or down several stairs and the boardwalk through the cave is short in distance. But if you’re looking for an adventure cave where you have to trek for several days, Paradise Cave is not for you .

About Paradise cave, Phong Nha

Paradise cave is one of the most beautiful caves in Phong Nha Ke Bang Park , along with Dark Cave , Phong Nha Cave , and Son Doong Cave .

Unlike Phong Nha Cave, Paradise cave is a dry cave with no underground river flow. Most parts of the ground in this cave have soft soil, and the ground is quite flat, so it is convenient for sightseeing and exploration.

With a length of 31.4 km and a height of 60m, Paradise cave is the longest dry cave with the longest wooden bridge in Asia.

The cave’s width varies from 30m to 100m, with some places up to 150m.

Paradise Cave wooden stairs

The cave is also known for its unique stalactite and stalagmite system, creating fanciful imagination.

The temperature inside the Paradise cave is always different from the outside by about 10 degrees Celcius.

Paradise Cave view

Where is Paradise cave?

Paradise Cave is located on Ho Chi Minh West Road, in Bo Trach, Quang Binh, Vietnam .

With a distance of 64 km, it takes about 1.5 hours to get from Dong Hoi to Paradise Cave. If you’re staying in Phong Nha town, you can get there easily within a 1-hour drive.

I suggest staying in Phong Nha for your convenience as most of the attractions are in Phong Nha. You can rent a motorbike for one or a few days in either Dong Hoi or Phong Nha town.

Son Doong Riverside  and  Funny Monkeys  are great choices if you’re looking for a budget vacation in Phong Nha.

For a relaxing vacation, consider Nguyen Shack Eco Resort  and  Phong Nha Farmstay . While they are a bit off the beaten path, both offer comfortable rooms, an onsite restaurant, and an outdoor swimming pool.

How to get to Paradise cave?

A) by motorbike.

You can visit Paradise cave without a tour easily by driving there.

I rent my scooter from MotorVina , but you can easily spot bike-renting services everywhere in Phong Nha.

From Phong Nha town, you can drive along Ho Chi Minh Road, then turn left to Ho Chi Minh West Road, following the road until you get to Paradise Cave.

If you start from Dong Hoi, you should prepare to go early because the distance is quite far.

How to get to Paradise cave Phong Nha Vietnam

If you’re traveling by a group, renting a charter car for a day would be the right choice.

Several companies offer daily tours from Phong Nha/ Dong Hoi to Paradise Cave. You can select a day tour that includes a trip to Paradise cave and Phong Nha cave or Dark cave .

The tour includes hotel pickup and drop-off at Dong Hoi or Phong Nha, transportation, lunch, entrance fee to the caves, and guide.

If you select the Paradise cave and Dark cave tour , you should wear quick-dry and waterproof clothing and bring:

  • Towel and swimwear
  • Mosquito repellent
  • Extra clothes

How much is the entrance fee to Paradise cave?

The road from the gate to the ticketing point will excite you with the steep slopes of up to 40 degrees. The surrounding area is gorgeous, so don’t forget to stop and take some beautiful pictures.

Getting to the gate, you will see most visitors traveling on tour. After parking your bike/ car, you can go to the ticket booth to buy tickets.

Paradise cave entrance fee : 250 000 VND/ person ($22), excluding electronic car.

At first, I thought the price was a bit high, but after visiting, the beauty of the cave changed my mind.

Exploring Paradise cave

Getting there.

After getting past the ticket control, there are two options:

  • Taking an electronic car
  • Trekking 1 km

I chose the trekking option as the distance was quite short. It was during the butterfly season, so the road was charming.

After 10 minutes walk, you will get to the road to Paradise Cave. As Paradise cave is located at an altitude of 360m above sea level, there are two ways to climb up:

  • Stairway (short, but more tiring)
  • The cement road (a little further away, but easier)

The cement road is about 500m, and it takes about 10 minutes to go up there. The entrance of Paradise cave is small, hidden behind cliffs and forest canopy.

Entering Paradise cave

Getting inside Paradise cave, you will be amazed by how large it is.

“It’s massive” – I first thought.

The temperature in the cave is lower than the outside, so it brings a chill atmosphere. You may want to get a light jacket in case it’s cold.

Kristina

Located in the spectacular Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Paradise Cave in Vietnam is a must-see destination in Vietnam.

Home to the 360-million-year-old rock formations, the 31 km-long Thien Duong Cave is the longest and the most beautiful cave in Phong Nha, the central province of Quang Binh.

Phong Nha, although tricky to get to, offers a nature escape for every visitor. From caving to bike rides in the national park or chilling by a pool in a farm stay, there’s much to do here. But if you only have time to do one thing, make it the Paradise Cave.

Exploring Paradise Cave in Vietnam

Paradise Cave Vietnam

Ho Khanh, the same local man who discovered the largest cave in the world, Son Doong Cave, also stumbled upon Thien Duong Cave in 2005.

Shortly after his remarkable discovery, it was fully explored by a caving squad from the British Cave Research Association who were so impressed with the interior of the cave that they named it the Paradice Cave.

During the initial explorations, the British scientists believed that the cave is no longer than 5 km but after further investigation, they realised it goes 31km deep making it the longest cave in the area. Maybe even the longest dry cave in Asia.

Shortly after the discovery, the 31m long cave was declared the longest cave in Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park and opened to the public in 2010. Although as a visitor, you can only explore the first kilometre of the cave which is just about enough to see why it’s called Thien Duong Cave.

The scale of the cave reaching 72 m and 150 m wide is breathtaking. You’ll feel the cathedral-like magnitude of the place as you descend into the cave via a wooden staircase.

The Paradise Cave is tastefully lit up so you’ll be able to investigate in details some of these ancient rock formations. The wooden walkway built above the cave floor will take you so close to some of these rock pillars that you’ll be able to look at them from up close.

Considered to be the most beautiful cave in Phong Nha, it’s home to spectacular stalactites suspended from the ceiling like intricate chandeliers and stalagmites rising from the floor in all their glory.

According to the British cavers, it gets even more spectacular the deeper you go, with glass-like crystal stalactites and other amazing formations thriving inside the cave.

The temperature inside the cave is comfortable as is the walkway. Unlike the Dark Cave, you don’t need any special equipment such as headlamps or swimwear, to explore the cave. Still, you should wear comfortable footwear, especially if you opt for the 1,6 km walk to the cave’s mouth from the parking lot.

Fun Facts About the Paradise Cave

Not to spook you out, but in 2012, new scorpion species were discovered inside the Paradise Cave. Don't worry though, they’re not interested in visitors much and stay inside the nooks and crevices away from all the fuss.

Also, the lights can go out unexpectedly, so don’t be alarmed. They come back up pretty fast. It happened to us just when we contemplated what it would be like here in the dark. Spooky!

Visiting the Paradise Cave in Vietnam: How to Get There

To get to the Paradise Cave, you can either book a tour online, take a local tour, or rent a motorbike to explore it independently.

Paradise Cave Tours

Tours to Vietnam’s Paradise Cave leaving from Phon Nha or Dong Hoi are often paired with Phong Nha Cave. That’s a great way to explore more than one cave if you are in the area for a short visit.

The tour lasts for 8 hours and includes a pickup, a boat cruise, lunch and entrance fees to both Paradise Cave and Phong Nha Cave. You’ll start your tour by arriving at the famous Phong Nha Cave followed by lunch in a local village and then proceed to the Paradise Cave.

Some tours will give you time to explore the Tien Son Cave, which sits 100m above the Phong Nha Cave and can be accessed via steep stairs. Some dragon boat skippers wait until you explore so check with your guide whether the Tien Son Cave is an option on your tour.

Local Paradise Cave Tours

If you’re interested in visiting the Paradise Cave beyond the first kilometre, take a look at the Phong Nha Farmstay's 7 km Paradise Cave tour. For around 2,650,000 VND ($119 - minimum two people) the tour includes a swim through an underground river and lunch.

Getting to the Paradise Cave by a Motorbike

phong nha paradise cave tour

With spectacular views and slow traffic, renting a motorbike to explore the Paradise Cave in Vietnam is a great option if you don’t mind operating one.

If you decide to take a scenic trip to the Paradise Cave by bike, ask for a map at your accommodation. Most of the places will have information leaflets and printed maps with a rough, but quite accurate drawing of where the cave is.

There is a circular road around the national park which you have to follow most of the time so you can't get lost. There are a couple of little road forks out in the local villages, but the locals will help you out if you are stuck.

Our advice is to pin the cave’s location on Google Maps on your smartphone, load the whole route while in a WiFi zone and then follow the directions.

Once you get to the foot of the Paradise Cave, there is a pretty large parking space for bikes and cars. From here, you can take a 1km paved and pleasant path through the woods to the cave base. Otherwise, for 15,000 VND, hop on a golf buggy service that you can take near the parking lot.

As you approach the base of the cave, there is a slight challenge ahead of you - a 700 m zigzag climb to the cave's mouth so be prepared if walking.

Where to Stay in Phong Nha

Booking accommodation in advance is a smart business during the peak season. Phong Nha is a small town and can get booked up pretty fast. Especially because more and more people are discovering the natural wonders of Vietnam.

Easy Tiger Backpacker Hostel is probably one of the most legendary places to stay in Phong Nha. It’s friendly and serves good food. Heritage By Night is also a good option for spending a night and two on Phong Nha.

There are quite a few farm-stays just outside Phong Nha that offer accommodation with spectacular surroundings. Chay Lap Farmstay and Resort, for example, offers clean bungalows and outdoor swimming pool.

Otherwise, you can book accommodation in Dong Hoi and take a local bus to get to Phong Nha.

Is Phong Nha Worth Visiting?

Absolutely! Our 3-month visit to Vietnam wouldn't have been the same should we missed the Phong Nha National Park with its world-class caves. It’s a must-visit destination in Vietnam for any traveller.

It’s an ideal escape for families, large groups, or couples seeking a leisurely riverside retreat or light-hearted fun.

2. Take a joy ride: Hire a bike at Thang’s Phong Nha Riders (ĐT20, Sơn Trạch, Bố Trạch, Quảng Bình, Vietnam) and spend the day riding the Phong Nha Loop, stopping at Botanical Gardens and Dark Cave along the way! Additional sites along the way are: Ozo Park, The Ho Chi Minh Trial bridge, and the Paradise Cave Tour – which you can visit independently. See the route here.

5. Get wild:  Do a pub crawl if you want to be part of the backpacking scene.

PARADISE CAVE - THE HEAVEN UNDERGROUND

Thiên Đường Cave (Paradise Cave) is a cave in Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, UNESCO's World Heritage Site, 60 km northwest of Đồng Hới city. Paradise Cave is located at an elevation of 200 meters above sea level, near the west branch of Ho Chi Minh Highway, in Son Trach Commune, Bố Trạch District, Quảng Bình Province, Vietnam. The cave was discovered by a local man in 2005 and the first 5 km of this cave was explored by explorers from the British Cave Research Association in 2005, the whole 31 km was explored and publicly announced by the British cave explorers. This cave is 31 km long, longer than Phong Nha Cave which had been considered the longest cave in this national park. The height can reach to 72 m and 150 m wide. The limestone formation is also more spectacular than that of Phong Nha Cave. The British cave explorers were impressed by the beautiful and spectacular stalactites and stalagmites inside this cave and they named it Thiên Đường Cave (Paradise Cave). This cave is opened for tourism in 2010.

phong nha paradise cave tour

Surrounded by forested karst peaks, this staggering cave system in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park extends for 31km, though most people only visit the first kilometre. The scale is breathtaking, as wooden staircases plunge into a cathedral-like space with vast alien-looking stalagmites and stalactites illuminated by large flood lights. Get here early to beat the crowds, as during peak times (early afternoon) tour guides shepherd groups using megaphones.

phong nha paradise cave tour

To explore deep inside the cave beyond the barrier at the end (and with luck see the eyeless cave fish that are part of its ecosystem), book a 7km Paradise Cave tour (2,650,000d, minimum two people), which includes a swim through an underground river (there's a boat if you can't swim) and lunch under a light shaft. Bookings can be made through Phongnha Discovery Tours and other accommodation options.

  • A complete guide to Phong Nha

Boats cruise along the river next to Phong Nha town. Photo by Christian Berg

Phong Nha is an adventurer’s paradise. Millions of years of flooding have chiseled out the world’s largest caves, meandering rivers entwine ancient karsts, and jungle-clad mountains lend an otherworldly atmosphere.

Colossal caves may be the main draw, but linger a little longer and phong nha-ke bang national park will reveal hiking trails, countryside lanes, and rivers perfect for kayaking. although this is vietnam’s top adventure destination, phong nha is still in the early stages of development. now is the time to come. the caves are pristine, the locals are friendly, and you’ll feel like you have the wilderness all to yourself., top things to do in phong nha.

Top things to do in Phong Nha.

Camping and Caving

Caves in Phong Nha range from the tame to the tremendous. For conservation reasons, local authorities restrict access to the larger caves. Some tour companies have exclusive rights to take travellers inside certain caves, while others are open to all. Son Doong looms large as one of the world’s greatest natural wonders, but don’t let that overshadow the allure of Phong Nha’s other treasures.

TIP: It's worth noting that many of Phong Nha’s caves are inaccessible during rainy season (from October to December.) Try to visit at other times of the year if you can.

tu lan caves phong nha

Son Doong is the world’s largest cave, with stalagmites that compete in height with London’s Big Ben. An expedition to Son Doong takes four days with camping spots set up on scenic parts of the trail. This is the most challenging and costly expedition in the area, and often booked out months in advance.

The Tu Lan cave system lets you wade, swim, climb and crawl through a seemingly never-ending network of tunnels. If you enjoy floating down underground rivers and burrowing through tight passageways, this is the cave system for you. Tours of Tu Lan range from one-day moderate trips to full-on, four-day expeditions.

TIP: Parts of the 2017 blockbuster Kong: Skull Island were filmed in and around the Tu Lan cave system. Watch the movie for a taste of the scenery that awaits.

Hang Va and Nuoc Nut

best tours in phong nha

Famous for their striking stalagmites and picturesque rock pools, Hang Va and Nuoc Nut are ideal for a two-day tour. The trip is short but challenging, as you’ll need to navigate razor-sharp rocks and clamber over karst passes to access the caves. Hang Va is undoubtedly the highlight, especially from January to March when the rock pools are at their fullest.

Exploring Pygmy Cave, the world’s fourth largest, involves a challenging three-day expedition complete with abseiling and climbing. En route you’ll swim underground rivers in Tiger Cave and wade through jade-coloured ponds in Over Cave. If you haven’t the time or budget for Son Doong, Pygmy Cave provides a great alternative at a fraction of the price. For tours of Pygmy Cave, visit the Jungle Boss website .

best caves in phong nha

A moderate, full-day trek through the national park brings you to Hang En, the world’s third largest cave. Expeditions in Hang En include an overnight stay out in the jungle or at the cave entrance, beneath thousands of darting swallows.

TIP: For expeditions to Son Doong, Hang En, Tu Lan, Hang Va and Nuoc Nut, you’ll need to book tours directly with  Oxalis . Try to contact them in advance to avoid disappointment.

Phong Nha Cave and Paradise Cave

Drifting through Phong Nha Cave.

Phong Nha Cave and Paradise Cave are the most popular attractions in the national park. Both of these are enjoyable, straightforward half-day tours, easily booked via your hotel. The entry to Phong Nha Cave features a journey along the river, while in Paradise Cave, a series of wooden walkways lets you explore safely. If you’re travelling with kids, both of these caves will allow them to join the fun.

Other Activities in Phong Nha

For an alternative way to see Phong Nha Cave, try a kayaking tour away from the crowds. Hang Toi, just a few kilometres away, also presents a fun selection of activities, including kayaking, swimming and zip lining. Planning your own kayak adventure? Oxalis and  Victory Road Villas rent kayaks for independent trips along Phong Nha’s picturesque river.

Walking & Hiking

Hiking through the jungle of Phong Nha.

The scenery in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is like nowhere else in Vietnam. If caving doesn’t appeal, hiking is a rewarding way to encounter Phong Nha’s lush landscape. Organised hiking tours are the best way to explore, as local experts will take you along hidden trails unknown to other travellers. If you love wildlife, consider a night tour, or pay a visit to animal rescue centres on a two-day hiking eco-tour. Jungle Boss is one of the top hiking tour outfits in the area.

TIP: Don’t be scared to get your feet wet! The best hiking and cycling routes pass through rivers and streams -- bring appropriate footwear.

Cycling & Motorbike Tours

Driving through the National Park.

Go deeper into the countryside as you navigate narrow lanes, crisscross rice paddies, and traverse streams. Many hotels provide free bicycle rentals for riding around town. To see more of the countryside, head towards the Ho Chi Minh Highway to Bong Lai Valley. This picturesque area is home to farms, viewpoints and swimming holes. It’s a 15-kilometre loop through peaceful pastoral scenery.

If you’re an avid cyclist, try taking on the paved roads of the national park -- just be sure to have a proper mountain bike, map and plenty of water. For a more engaging experience, book a cycling tour with local guides who can show you unmapped paths and introduce you to farmers and villagers. Feeling leisurely? A motorbike tour will let you take in the scenery without breaking a sweat.

TIP:  Phong Nha Adventure Cycling is geared up for quality bicycle tours with good mountain bikes and expert guides. Hai’s Eco Tour also offers motorbike trips with licensed local drivers.

Practical Tips for Visting Phong Nha

Where to stay in phong nha.

Phong Nha is a fantastic place to soak up the beauty of Vietnam’s countryside. The best option for nature lovers is booking a boutique homestay, farmstay or villa in the rice fields — just outside of the town. Here you’ll be immersed in rural life and wake up to beautiful views each morning. Phong Nha town also has a handful of accommodation options to choose from, including easy-going hostels and humble riverside guest houses.

Phong Nha accomodation.

Restaurants in Phong Nha

Most homestays and guest houses offer their own menus for guests, which is handy after a day of outdoor adventure. In Phong Nha town you’ll find small, family-run restaurants cooking Vietnamese and Western dishes. Head to Coffee Station for a tropical smoothie bowl or locally grown coffee, savour a sundowner at Momma D’s Rooftop, or try the barbecue menu at Chao Restaurant.

TIP: For a real farm-to-table culinary experience, take a bumpy ride or scenic boat trip to The Pub with Cold Beer – a Phong Nha attraction in itself.

“ In Ladakh, find the perfect blend of culture, adventure, and serenity. December last year I decided that my next trip would be Ladakh but didn’t know how to go about it. I knew I wanted to travel in a group, as I had prior experiences of traveling in a group but wanted an organiser I could trust. Ladakh isn’t like other destinations wherein you need some instructions due to the high altitudes.
