Reigning ACM Group of the Year and CMA Vocal Group of the Year, Old Dominion bring their No Bad Vibes tour with special guests Priscilla Block, Adam Doleac and Kylie Morgan to Little Caesars Arena on Thursday, September 14 at 7 p.m.

Old Dominion has been crisscrossing the country on their No Bad Vibes Tour since January, playing high-energy shows in sold-out arenas to thousands of excited fans since the start of 2023.

The group’s tour announcement comes off the heels of the group’s recent ACM nomination for Group of the Year, making this the eighth consecutive year Old Dominion has been nominated in the category. They have taken home the title the last five years.

Old Dominion also recently debuted their critically acclaimed new single “I Should Have Married You” (Columbia Nashville/Sony Music Nashville). The track was written and produced by Old Dominion’s Matthew Ramsey, Trevor Rosen, Whit Sellers, Geoff Sprung and Brad Tursi alongside award-winning songwriter Shane McAnally. LISTEN HERE .

About Old Dominion

Old Dominion emerged as one of Nashville’s most successful post-modern country bands, fusing clever lyrics with an infectious sound. Their lyrical wit and hook heavy songwriting is a winning proposition. Since breaking onto the scene, the band has achieved eight No. 1 singles at country radio, over one billion on-demand streams, multiple Platinum and Gold single certifications and headlined arenas and amphitheaters around the globe. Old Dominion are currently the 5X reigning CMA and ACM “Group of the Year.” They are currently nominated for their eighth consecutive ACM “Group of the Year” honor. The band also earned nominations for “Album of the Year” at the 2022 CMA Awards and for “Favorite Country Duo or Group” at the 2022 American Music Awards.

Old Dominion at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit

old dominion tour detroit

Detroit,Michigan- Playing in what frontman Matthew Ramsey called a “big-ass” space in Detroit is nothing new for country music powerhouse Old Dominion. As Kenny Chesney’s regular touring partner, the country quintet has logged multiple appearances at the home of the NFL Detroit Lions, Ford Field since its first country music hit in 2015. That made Little Caesars Arena, where the group played Thursday night Sept. 14, an almost intimate venue, though Ramsey and company were hardly complaining about their biggest headlining date yet in the market.

The psuedo home time show was made all the more special since keyboardist-guitarist Trevor Rosen, who originally hails from nearby Woodhaven, so it was also per Ramsey, a “home town show,” was made more relevant when Rosen brought his parents on stage during the encore to take a picture with the thousands of fans in the cavernous arena background.

The hour-and-50-minute show proved Old Dominion is more than capable of headlining an arena also. Displaying a confidence that comes from 10 Top 10 Country chart hits and four Top 5 albums, the group breezed through its 22 songs in no-muss, all business fashion. With a handsomely staged set that featured a massive T-shaped ramp that stretched to the middle of the arena floor and three-panel rear video screen for visuals, the throwback show featured no pyrotechnics or choreographed dancers that are just as common for country acts now as it is a staple in Pop shows.

Instead, Old Dominion put the spotlight and heat on their music and it had an abundance to play on Thursday, including three selections from the “Memory Lane” EP it released this past June. The band used the quandary of what to perform leaving three of the evenings cuts open, honoring requests from the Little Caesars crowd, some brandishing signs ala Bruce Springsteen epic shows of years past. The exuberant fan selections led to renditions of “Stars in the City,” “Beer Can In a Truck Bed” and, later, “Wrong Turns,” which all sounded fine despite Ramsey cautioning that “there’s a good chance we’re gonna (mess) it up ’cause we don’t play these all the time.”

The rest of the show offered a career-to-date snapshot of big hits from the opening “Break Up With Him” to “One Man Band,” “Song For Another Time,” “No Such Thing as a Broken Heart”and “Written in the Sand.”  Other favorites such as “No Hard Feelings,” “How Good is That,”  “Nowhere Fast” and “I Should Have Married You,” continued the crowd sing along in the beautifully curated setlist.  Old Dominion paid homage yo Chesney’s “Save It For a Rainy Day,” which Ramsey and guitarist Brad Tursi co-wrote, and Tursi provided instrumental highlights throughout the show, particularly during the extended jam at the end of “Memory Lane” and a brief solo spot that preceded the Chesney song.

Old Dominion finished the night with an encore that morphed from mellow “Hawaii” to rocking, with a bit of Gary Glitter’s “Rock and Roll (Part w)” leading into last years mega-hit “I Was on a Boat That Day.” It may not have been the biggest place the group has played in these parts, but it was definitely a big night for both band and fans

Old Dominion

Old Dominion

Artist Information

Consisting of four Virginians and one Michigander, Old Dominion eventually came together in Nashville, Tenn. But the seeds were sown years prior in Virginia where a few of the members grew up.

“I had been doing my own thing musically for a while, but I knew Geoff (Sprung- bass) and Whit (Sellers- drums), and I was always a big fan of their band,” says frontman Matt Ramsey. “A few years after I moved to Nashville, they ended up moving here too, so of course it was a natural fit to play together.”

In the fall of 2003, Matt was introduced to another Nashville newcomer, Detroit-area native Trevor Rosen, at a songwriter round. The two had immediate musical chemistry, and soon forged a writing partnership that was to lay the foundation of Old Dominion.

“Matt had formed his band with Whit and Geoff, and I found myself jumping up onstage with them quite a bit,” says Trevor. “At one point I said to Matt, ‘I know all your songs and write half of them with you anyway, I should just be in your band’. I said it half-jokingly, and I’m not entirely sure he ever gave his official blessing, but I started showing up and just never stopped.”

The final piece of the puzzle, Brad Tursi (lead guitar) was no stranger at all. Brad had attended James Madison University in Virginia with Geoff and Whit, where their bands crossed paths frequently. When Brad joined Old Dominion in 2012, he brought with him a melodic, hook-driven style of guitar that rounded out the OD sound. It also added another seasoned songwriter into the mix.

Out on the road, the live show is dialed in. Opening for acts including Trace Adkins, Brett Eldridge and Jake Owen, their sound has tightened into a cohesive blend of country lyric and rock instrumentation, fused with pop and hip-hop sensibilities. It even led to a debut on the world-renowned Grand Ole Opry .

The extensive touring has also helped ease the transition into the studio. Working with Grammy-winning producer Shane McAnally and acclaimed studio veteran Ilya Toshinsky at the helm, Old Dominion is one of the few bands in country music to write, record and perform all of its own music.

“For us it just made sense to play on the record,” says Brad. “We are a band. As a band you really want to try to capture the essence of what you do live on tape, and there’s really only one true way to do that.”

“There’s nothing like playing a song you’ve written and watching the crowd sing the words back to you,” says Ramsey. “We’ve experienced it a bit when we play ‘Wake Up Lovin’ You’ or ‘Better Dig Two’ and that’s great, but it’s that much sweeter when we are the artist releasing the song.”

My daughter and I went to see them. Amazing! So good live, vocals spot on and the live music fantastic, what artists! 3rd time I've seen them. Didn't realise what successful song writers they are for other well known singers. Love them to bits, if I could ever afford to I'd take my daughter to Nashville to see them play.

Old Dominion to Headline Kickoff Concert of Trojan Nights

June 27, 2024

Dakota State University is hosting Trojan Nights to celebrate the opening of the Brian Kern Family Stadium at the Beacom PREMIER Complex. The event will kick off on Tuesday, August 27, with a concert featuring Old Dominion with special guests Brothers Osborne, Elle King, and Host/DJ Blake Horstmann. The concert is exclusively sponsored by First PREMIER Bank and PREMIER Bankcard. Trojan Nights will conclude Thursday, August 29, in the new stadium, with DSU taking on the Dakota Wesleyan Tigers in the annual Ag Bowl on the new Blankley Field.

TrojanNights_1350x900.png

The $41 million Beacom PREMIER Complex is the first new DSU athletics facility since the Fieldhouse was finished in 1960. The South Dakota Board of Regents approved the naming of the Beacom PREMIER Complex and the Brian Kern Family Stadium at their meeting this week.

“This new facility is entirely privately funded by stakeholders whose generous support will help our student athletes achieve great things and bring recognition to Dakota State,” said José-Marie Griffiths, President of Dakota State University. “The kickoff concert and first football game are perfect events to celebrate this milestone.”

BEACOM PREMIER COMPLEX

The impact the Beacom family has had on Dakota State University has been pivotal. Alumnus Miles Beacom and his wife Lisa’s financial generosity have resulted in academic, athletic, and research facilities being built on campus. Miles’ brother, Dan Beacom, impacted DSU through his positive personal character as a humble mentor, leader, and motivator who believed in teamwork. PREMIER has long been a strong and active supporter of Dakota State.

“The experience my brother and I had at Dakota State University allowed us to obtain degrees, which helped us succeed in life,” said Miles Beacom, PREMIER Bankcard CEO. “Lisa and I believe it’s important to give back so future DSU students have this same learning experience both in the classroom and on the field.”

BRIAN KERN FAMILY STADIUM

Madison businessman Brian Kern is a long-time supporter of Dakota State University, providing scholarship and program support for student athletes, and has donated to the new athletics facility. The Brian Kern Family Stadium is an appropriate tribute to the family’s efforts, which benefit DSU student-athletes, the University, and the greater Madison area.

BLANKLEY FIELD

George Blankley served an important role in the early history of Dakota State Athletics as an instructor, coach, and athletic director who also taught students life skills necessary after graduation. He and his wife Shirley continue to impact students through an endowed scholarship. Their giving spirit will live on through future athletes who play on the new field, which previously was named Blankley Field.

TROJAN NIGHTS TICKET INFORMATION

Concert pre-sale tickets for DSU students and employees begin June 28, 2024. Depending on availability, tickets may be released to additional audiences and the general public at a later date. More information about the concert and artists can be found at dsu.edu/trojan-nights . Ag Bowl celebrates the economic impact of our agricultural partners from across the state of South Dakota. How do I get to Michigan Central Station?

Major events can drive plenty of traffic in the Corktown area. Several  roads will close  throughout the reopening event, but visitors can choose from nearby street parking, free parking in the 1501 Wabash St. garage on a first-come, first-served basis, riding the bus through the Detroit Department of Transportation, e-scooters or ridesharing.

What's next for Michigan Central Station after reopening?

After reopening festivities, Michigan Central will begin a "phased reactivation" of the train station for several months as restaurant, retail and other commercial and community-focused partners fill the space.
