Nile are a technical death metal band hailing from Greenville, South Carolina, United States who formed in 1993. Since debuting in 1995 they have released seven studio albums and become one of the most respected cult acts in American heavy metal.

Nile formed in the ashes of vocalist and guitarist Karl Sanders' previous band Morriah, who formed in the late 80's and split in the early 90's. However, Sanders was a man with drive to spare, and after barely any time spent in mourning, he found a rhythm section in 1993 in the form of bassist Chief Spires, and drummer Pete Hammoura and formed the first true incarnation of Nile. Wisely, Sanders spent two years writing and rehearsing with this new line-up before releasing any material, so their first E.P, 1995's “Festivals Of Atonement”, made a huge name for themselves on the underground metal scene.

After spending two years almost constantly on tour, either playing headline shows or supporting bands like Deicide and Broken Hope, the band signed to Visceral Records and released their second E.P in the form of “Ramses Bringer Of War”. Tragedy nearly struck when their label went bust mere months after its release, but the band was saved when Relapse Records stepped in to sign them up for the release of their first full-length album “Amongst The Catacombs of Nephren-Ka”, which came out in 1998. The album received critical acclaim from all over the world, as did their live shows, but the band wouldn't receive the kind of record sales to match their acclaim until their fifth album “Ithyphallic”, which was released in 2007 on Nuclear Blast Records.

Ever since then, the band have remained one of the most consistent acts in extreme metal, having never released an album that wasn't hugely acclaimed and their live shows having only got better with age. As one of the premier extreme metal acts of their generation, Nile come highly recommended.

Live reviews

I am not a huge death metal fan but I had the chance to catch a set from Nile during a festival I was attending and I was definitely intrigued by their sound. They offer a very different sound then I’ve heard from other death metal bands. It was great. They seemed to be very Egyptian inspired, which is not something you come across every day.

The guys in the band were very in to the music and the atmosphere, and the audience fed off of that throughout the entire show. The audience was intense and everyone was jumping up and down or dancing for every song. It really was a great atmosphere to see a show. They played on a big stage that was properly lit for their type of music and genre. They guys wore a lot of black and had really long hair or a shaved head, which also fit in with the type of music they were playing.

The band was very interactive with the audience as well, getting them to sing along to a few songs. Nile has definitely made a fan out of me, and I have searching out their music to get a better feel for them. So far I have not been disappointed.

Nile played nearly 90 minutes of brutal, punishing death metal with masterful professionalism. I love seeing long sets. Every single song in their set list was a "best of" pick (in order to play all their best songs excluding none, they would have to play for about 3 hours non-stop). Heads were banging, and the vibe of the band was really positive, smiling, and interactive with audience. Definitely had a great time.

Finally got to see them! Had a good 15 years to wait due to unfortunate circumstances, but made it happen.

Made sure i was in the pit,got hurt, and loved every minute of it!

They even played a bunch of my favorite songs...just wish i had more funds to have gotten a vinyl.

It was fucking heavy man. I love that band and i loved how the crowd got into it so much. if you're reading this review thinking "should i go to Nile" well fucking go you pussy stop thinking about it and go you'll regret it for the rest of your life if you don't go!

One of the best shows I've ever witnessed. The mastery of Karl Sanders and George Kollias is epic, and pure joy to behold. The venue, Wildwood, is by far the best venue in town and maybe statewide. Nile is easily one of the greatest bands of all time.

Nile was phenomenal! Precise, and blisteringly devastating. I've been a fan for more than 15 years and this was my first opportunity to see them live. Impressive to say the least.

Originally hailing from Greenville, South Carolina, international death metal legends  NILE  have become one of the most revered names in the worldwide heavy metal scene today, combining extreme traditional and technical death metal styles with their trademarked blend of Ancient Egyptian and Near Eastern soundscapes and historical mysticism. Today,  NILE  announce they will be touring Europe and the United Kingdom, starting in November 2022, bringing their unique presence to the stages!

South Carolina's Egyptian-themed death metal titans NILE will embark on a European tour in the fall of 2022.

NILE guitarist/vocalist Brian Kingsland sat out the band's recent U.S. tour in order to spend time with his newborn son. Filling in for him was Scott Eames ( THY ANTICHRIST , NEVALRA ). Featuring support from INCANTATION , SANGUISUGABOGG and I AM , the trek kicked off on February 3 in Nashville, Tennessee, visiting several major cities before wrapping in Spartanburg, South Carolina on March 12.

NILE 's ninth studio album, "Vile Nilotic Rites" , was released in November 2019 via Nuclear Blast . The disc was recorded and produced by Karl Sanders at Serpent Headed Studios in Greenville, South Carolina, with the exception of the drums which were recorded at Esoteron Music Studios in Athens, Greece with engineering handled by Jim Touras and George Dovolos . The album was mixed and mastered by Mark Lewis at MRL Studios . For the album artwork, the band returned to artist Michal "Xaay" Loranc who had worked with the band for over 10 years.

Last September, NILE announced that it had signed a worldwide contract with Napalm Records .

Rodgers and his band will be performing five shows across the UK next year starting at The Piece Hall in Halifax in June 16.

From there they will play Southampton Summer Sessions on June 23rd, followed by Bedford Summer Sessions on July 7, Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod on July 11, and Dreamland Margate July 13.

Nile announce European tour

NILE  have announced a headlining European tour!

Set for November and December this year, the tour will see the American death metal band touring extensively across mainland Europe and the UK in support of their latest studio album,  Vile Nilotic Rites , which was released back in 2019.

Speaking about the tour, guitarist/vocalist Karl Sanders says, “I am absolutely on fire with the news that NILE will be returning for touring in Europe with Massive Music . Fuck yes. Metal will take place!” Drummer George Kollias adds, “it’s time to conquer Europe again and I couldn’t be more excited! This will be a great tour, we are super hungry to tour Europe again and we are looking forward to see all out fans there!”

The UK's biggest album of 2024 so far confirmed with more than 540,000 sales

I t came as absolutely no surprise this week when Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department was confirmed as the biggest album of 2024 so far.

The American singer-songwriter, 34, is currently in the middle of the worldwide sell-out Eras Tour , playing songs from the brand new album to stadiums across the globe.

And, after topping the US album charts for 10 consecutive weeks, the Platinum-selling record has now been confirmed as the UK’s best-seller for the year so far.

Data released by the Official Charts Company confirmed that not only was it the most streamed album of 2024, but that it had also sold more physical copies than any other record, too.

It beat stiff competition from the likes of The Weeknd’ s compilation album The Highlights, Noah Kahan’s Stick Season, and Olivia Rodrigo ’s second album Guts.

The feat is yet another achievement in a long line of them for the album, which was released in April and has produced number one single Fortnight – it topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic.

And the numbers are even more impressive, with Official Charts confirming: ‘Tortured Poets has accumulated over 542,200 chart units, including 251,000 physical sales, making it the most physically-purchased LP of the year so far.’

The statement continued: ‘Upon its record-breaking number one debut in the UK , Tortured Poets Department became Taylor’s 12th UK number one album, matching Madonna ’s long-held all-time chart record.’

Tortured Poets Department also posted the best opening week of any album since Ed Sheeran ’s 2017 album Divide, and saw several of Taylor’s older albums re-enter the top 20 on the albums chart.

2024 also proved to be a massive year for Noah Kahan, whose album Stick Season was first released in 2022 but has seen its popularity soar in the last 12 months – in total it has now shifted 1.37 million chart units.

The data has been released as part of the Official Chart’s half-year review, which also confirmed that Noah Kahan’s single Stick Season is the biggest of 2024.

And it seems Sophie Ellis Bextor ’s Murder on the Dancefloor has had a better year in 2024 than it did in 2001 or 2002, back when it was originally in the UK charts.

The song was only the 60th and 87th best-selling song in 2001 and 2002 respectively, but in 2024 it’s currently sitting eighth, marking a huge improvement from 22 years ago.

Other notable releases among the top 40 biggest albums of 2024 in the UK are the likes of Billie Eilish, whose album Hit Me Hard and Sift rounds out the top five.

Massive releases from the likes of Beyoncé and Ariana Grande are comfortably inside the top 20, while compilation albums released by the likes of Eminem , Abba , and Sir Elton John are close to the top.

Eminem’s 2005 compilation album Curtain Call: The Hits is the eighth biggest album of 2024, while Abba’s Gold compilation (released in 1992) is ninth.

Sir Elton’s Diamonds, originally put out in 2017, still dominates the charts, landing in 10th seven years after its initial release, while Fleetwood Mac also feature in the top 10.
