In the shadow of the great Sierra Nevada, the city of Granada is arguably one of the most cosmopolitan and historically-rich on the entire Iberian Peninsula. With a past that bears the influences of Moorish invaders, Christian crusaders and Spanish imperialists alike, its various sights range from arabesque palaces, to Catholic basilicas, forming a veneer that’s part white-washed Andalusia, part mystical North Africa.

First-time visitors love to lose themselves amidst the sea of churches and palaces that forms Granada’s old centre, flitting between the towering Cathedral of Granada (the second-largest in the country), the regal tombs of the Royal Chapel, and the sprawling Alhambra on the hill—Granada’s undisputed pièce de résistance and the onetime stronghold of Arabic sultans in Spain. Others enjoy wandering the city’s various districts and spying out its hidden crevices; people-watching from the charming cafés of Plaza Nueva serving free tapas, lining up for a informal flamenco performance, or enjoying the arabesque streets of Albayzin.

Your Granada tour guide will tell you that this city also represents a gateway to the fabled hinterlands of the greater region, offering up rugged mountain biking and laid-back beachcombing alike on the stretches of the Costa del Sol, and even skiing on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada to the south.

Hi! I’m Asier, welcome to Granada , the most wonderful and charming city in the world. I am a licensed tour guide, with a degree in Art History, five years of experience working for many travel agencies as freelance, in english, español e italiano and specialized in the Alhambra. Let me show you as a local our traditions , food and heritage . The city of the Alhambra will not disappoint you and Granada is my passion.

Granada Tour Guide - Manu B.

Hello! My name is Manu. I am master architect, master in Historical Construction Techniques and licenced guide. I studied architecture in Granada and during the degree I also worked as urban photography teacher and editor in an arts magazine. I finished in 2015 and I did an internship in Yokohama National University in Japan. After that I worked for the structures department of the University of Castilla La Mancha, where I did some restorations and started working with heritage architecture. In 2018 I started my own architecture studio and got an official guiding licence. Since then I work running my own projects and collaborating with different companies while showing the Andalusian architecture , heritage, history and urbanism in the cities of Granada, Sevilla, Guadix and Málaga.

Andalucia Tour Guide - Alfredo C.

I'm a licensed tour guide for Andalucia and I love my job. I own a minivan for six passengers (Mercedes-Benz V Class) and I do day trips and tours in a radio of two hours around my hometown. After 10 years working as a guide the most of the tours I do are private tours and I love this type of tours because allow me to be in touch with travellers who really want to enjoy the experience of discovering a destination by the hand of a local guide. When I'm guiding I love to share my expertise and knowledge whit the clients and I have realized that those travelers hiring a private tour want to be in touch with local people. So I include in my tours the visit to olive oil farms, wineries or chese makers. My purpose is that after their holidays clients remember the tour with me as a one of the highlights in the trip to Spain.

Granada Tour Guide - Nacho M.

Welcome to Granada, everyone! I'm thrilled to have you here. My name is Nacho, and I'm not just your average tour guide – I'm a Granada native with a deep love for this city and its rich history. As an Official Tourist Guide of Granada, I've had the privilege of studying the intricate tapestry of Andalusian art history, focusing on the architectural marvels that spanned from the 7th to the 15th century. Granada, as the last Arabic capital of this period, holds a special place in my heart, and I'm excited to share its wonders with you. But it's not just history that I'm passionate about – I'm also fluent in Spanish, Chinese, English, Italian, and French. So, feel free to converse with me in any of these languages! As Nelson Mandela once said, 'If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.' Beyond languages and history, I'm an energetic person who loves staying active through sports like cycling, taekwondo, skiing, running, and calisthenics. Being a tour guide isn't just about sharing facts – it's about being physically and mentally prepared to handle any situation while ensuring everyone has a fantastic time. Granada isn't just a city to me; it's my home, and I'm honored to share its charm with you. As Antonio Machado beautifully put it, 'Every city has a special charm, Granada has its own and all the other cities' charm.' So, let's embark on this journey together and create unforgettable memories in this enchanting city. Thank you for choosing Granada, and let's make the most of our time here!

Granada Tour Reviews

“ Excellent combined Alhambra and city tour ”

Asier is an excellent tour guide, very knowledgeable and a nice friendly person with excellent English. He is able to answer any question you have and catered to our teens as well as the adults very well. We especially appreciated his communication and flexibility in planning our tour. We particularly recommend doing his city tour with the tour of the Alhambra, he showed us things that we would not have found or understood without a guide and it really added to our understanding of the history of Granada. Thank you so much Asier.

“ Manu is fantastic ”

Manu is an excellent guide. His English is impeccable, he is extremely organized and knowledgeable about the Alhambra and Spanish history in general. He made the Alhambra come alive for us, painting pictures in our minds of how it was built and occupied centuries past. We saw Granada, Sevilla, and Cordoba on this trip and our party agrees Granada was our favorite. Since all we did in Granada was see the Alhambra with Manu, I can’t help but think he had everything to do with it.

15 Best Granada Tours

Granada is a mid-sized provincial capital located in southern Spain’s Andalusia region.

It sits at the confluence of four rivers and is most noted as home to the Alhambra – a historic palace and fortress that features stunning Moorish architecture.

In addition to its abundant historical attractions, Granada boasts a fascinating multicultural history, a vibrant cuisine, and a fun nightlife that’s largely fueled by the nearly 80,000 college students that live within the greater metropolitan area.

There are a number of day trip options that depart from the city as well, and abundant outdoor activities like mountain climbing, biking, and hiking.

1. Alhambra Ticket and Guided Tour with Nasrid Palaces

Generalife Palace

For those who find themselves in Granada with only enough time to see a few of the city’s most iconic UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the awe-inspiring Alhambra and the Nasrid Palaces should rank at the top of the list.

Along with their guide, guests will learn about Granada’s rich history and cultures and explore the aforementioned attractions as well as others, like the Generalife Palace, Medina, Alcazaba Fortress, and the Albaicín neighborhood.

Tours are limited in size to ensure everyone enjoys a personalized experience, and tickets feature priority access, so waiting in long lines during peak times won’t be an issue.

2. Albaicín and Sacromonte 2 ½-Hour Walking Tour

Sacromonte

Learning about Granada’s amazing historic attractions and varied cultures is best done with the help of an experienced local guide.

On this walking tour, participants will explore Albaicín and Sacromonte—two of the most significant neighborhoods in the city.

Tours include aspects of art, architecture, culture, and history. They visit attractions like the historic walls and gates that once protected the Fortress of Alcazaba and the labyrinth of caves in and around the bohemian enclave of Sacromonte.

Short walking tours are a good fit for those interested in getting a feel for the city’s geography without spending hours crammed onto a stuffy tour bus.

3. 3-Hour Cathedral and Royal Chapel Tour

Encarnación Cathedral

Granada has always featured a unique mixture of cultures and ethnicities that are well represented in its historic architecture and religious sites.

This 3-hour tour focuses on the city’s Christian past and includes guided excursions to the Encarnación Cathedral and the Royal Chapel, which are two of its premier attractions.

Tours also include a trip to the well-preserved Arabic Baths that were originally built in the 11th century.

Thankfully, unlike others in the city, they avoided destruction when Christians took control of the city years later.

Tickets to the cathedral and chapel are included, and tours meet at a convenient central location.

4. Skip-the-Line Alhambra and Nasrid Palaces Guided Tour

Nasrid Palace

Though the Alhambra and Nasrid Palaces’ histories date back more than 600 years, it’s possible to experience them in all their glory in just a few hours.

Together, they represent one of the world’s most impressive collections of Christian and Muslim art, architecture, and religious history, and they have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since the mid-‘80s.

Under the tutelage of their knowledgeable and enthusiastic local guide, guests will delve into the site’s main attractions that include opulent palaces, impressive fortresses, idyllic gardens, and revered religious sites that still draw pilgrims from both near and far.

5. Sierra Nevada Private Safari by 4WD

Sierra Nevada Mountains

After rendezvousing with their guide and driver in Granada’s city center, guests will travel by all-wheel drive vehicle to the towering Sierra Nevada Mountains just north of the city.

They rise to an altitude of nearly 7,000 feet and are capped with pristine white snow for much of the year despite the temperate climate.

Tours explore areas of the mountain range that are generally inaccessible to those on other tours and include a ride through the Sierra de Huétor Natural Park and a number of quaint Andalusian villages along the way.

Drinks and food are available en route for an additional cost.

6. Walking Food Tour

Walking Food Tour

From locally produced cheese and wine to preserved fruit and some of the best ham on the continent, Granada is a proverbial smorgasbord for visiting epicureans.

On this 3 ½-hour discovery tour, guests will have the opportunity to explore neighborhoods slightly off the well-worn path, rub elbows with locals, and sample a variety of amazing local staples as well.

The tour also includes elements of history and culture that reflect Moorish, Roman, and Berber influences that are still evident in the food.

Tours include samplings at a restaurant that’s been popular with artsy types and diehard food lovers for more than 100 years.

7. Flamenco Show in Albaicín

Flamenco Show in Albaicín

Southern Spain’s flamenco dancing traditions are one of the region’s most unique cultural attractions, and should really be experienced first-hand when visiting Granada if time permits.

Flamenco is known the world over, and it’s preserved more in the Albaicín neighborhood than nearly anywhere else in the city.

While enjoying this guided activity, guests will learn why flamenco has been so central in Spanish culture for generations. They’ll take in an authentic show performed by dancers, guitar players, and drummers.

Though tours last just an hour, they tend to make a big impact on those who’ve never experienced flamenco before.

8. Perfume Workshop

Perfume Workshop

Perfumes featuring a variety of exotic ingredients have always been much sought after Spanish products.

For those looking for something truly unique, this perfume workshop and museum combo tour would be a great way to spend 90 minutes.

Guests will learn about the region’s perfume making tradition, tour a museum dedicated to perfume and cologne, and have an opportunity to try their hand at creating their own personal blend.

Think of it as a hands-on cooking experience, but with a master perfume maker instead of a chef.

Tours include museum entry, a complimentary drink, the workshop, and 50 ml of perfume to take home.

9. Alhambra Night Tour

Alhambra

Visitors tend to agree that as the sun sets over the horizon, the Alhambra takes on an especially magical aura.

This 2-hour night tour includes access to the fortress, sultan’s quarters, and stunning gardens, all of which are led by an experienced guide.

Much of the site’s amazing Moorish architecture dates back more than 500 years. It includes colorful mosaics of inlaid tiles, decorative fountains, and impressive depictions of historically significant events.

Tours include audio guides in multiple languages, tickets to the Alhambra and Nasrid Palaces, and hotel pick-up and drop off may be selected at the time of booking as well.

10. Nivar Caving Experience

Nivar Caving Experience

Conveniently located in the country just outside Granada, Nivar is one of the region’s premier caving destinations.

This 3-hour mid-morning tour begins and ends in Granada, where guests will meet their guide and set out on an underground exploration of a subterranean cave complex that definitely requires the assistance of a professional.

Tour participants will get all the training and gear they’ll need before hitting the caves, which are full of stalactites, stalagmites, and impressive formations of rock that have been formed over eons of slow water erosion.

Each tour features a post-activity snack and coffee break before heading back to Granada city center.

11. 1-Hour Panoramic Segway Tour

Paseo de los Tristes

Though for the uninitiated, they look like tricky machines to handle, Segways are actually easy to master after minimal training.

Regardless of where you and your travel companions fall on the experience compendium, you’ll get all the instruction you’ll need to make the day a safe and memorable one.

You’ll see many of Granada’s premier attractions, like the Plaza Nueva, Paseo de los Tristes, and the Albaicín neighborhood, which provides stunning views of the city’s winding streets, impressive Moorish architecture, and the Sierra Nevada Mountains just inland.

Tours meet at a central location and are available in English and Spanish.

12. Tapas Tasting Guided Tour

Tapas Tasting Guided Tour

Granada sports a vibrant food scene that includes traditional classics, contemporary favorites, and lots of regional and international influences.

For many of the city’s residents who shun large meals, tapas is definitely the way to go. This tour allows guests to sample a number of offerings in up to three different eateries.

Eager eaters will immerse themselves in local culture, sample regional wines, and explore parts of the city that are off the beaten tourist path.

Guided tapas tours last two hours and start early evening, making them the perfect way to kick-off a fun night on the town.

13. Royal Chapel and Historical Center Walking Tour

Plaza Bib-Rambla

The Plaza Bib-Rambla is one of Granada’s most impressive central squares, which for much of its life, lay just inside the city’s main gate.

Often referred to as the ‘Gate of Ears,’ it is conveniently close to other tourist attractions, like the Alcaicería Arabian market that is known for its smoky atmosphere, narrow walkways, and exotic goods like beautiful silks and rare spices.

Tours also include a stop at the Islamic university, La Madraza, and the ever-popular Royal Chapel, which features the tombs of former rulers Isabella and Ferdinand of Aragon.

Be aware that tours of religious sites have strict dress codes, so click the link below for details.

14. Three Hills of Granada Half-Day Mountain e-Bike Tour

Granada

See Granada from on-high on this half-day mountain e-bike tour that meets and departs near the Alhambra site.

For those who’ve never used an e-bike before, they’re the perfect means of transportation in mountainous terrain because they feature an electric motor that provides extra power when the going gets tough.

Tours last three hours and explore a unique mix of historical and natural attractions that are perfect for those who’ve had their fill of the city’s often crowded hotspots.

Tour pace can be adjusted to suit guests, and there is always time set aside for breaks, photography, questions, or just a quiet moment with a cool drink.

15. Jewish and Christian Neighborhoods Guided Tour

Casa de los Tiros

Visit two of Granada’s most culturally and historically significant neighborhoods on this Jewish and Christian guided tour.

The neighborhood of Realejo includes notable landmarks like the Casa de los Tiros and the Royal Quarters of Santo Domingo that highlight Jewish influence and contributions to the city’s history and architecture over the centuries.

Afterward, guests and their guide will make their way to the Christian Cathedral of Granada that was built in the mid-16th century.

Other highlights include the Royal Chapel of Granada and the Madrasah of Granada—the city’s oldest university.

Tours are offered twice daily and last a few hours.

Great experience Tripadvisor

Essential Granada, Albaicín and Sacromonte, 2 tours in which we have coincided with Alain. The route is wonderful and Alain is one of those guides who makes you think, one of those who tells the story in a very pleasant way... a marvellous guide. We also booked a tour of the Alhambra, in this case we were guided by Edu, who is very knowledgeable about the history and landscaping. The 3 tours we have done with Walk in Granada 100% recommendable.

Grupo 1

A wonderful walk through Granada's history. Tripadvisor

La Fonda and the Alcaicería (Zacatín). An entertaining and didactic class on the history of the four cultures of Granada. It was very short.

Grupo 2

Granada is unique Tripadvisor

Granada is a unique city and if you are lucky enough to have a person like Eduardo explain it to you, the city becomes even more attractive. Very, very entertaining and historically accurate visit.

Perfect tour

"Ana is amazing. She’s incredibly knowledgeable, and knew exactly how to pace the tour for our group. "

local Ana

"We all had such a great time with Carolina! She made us feel so welcome and “at home”. It was great to get a feel of where the locals hang and to try their fabulous favorites. She was also so conscientious of my son’s food preferences. We would recommend to all of our friends!!"

local Carolina

"Carolina was great to work with. We were able to arrange a tour of Alhambra on short notice. She was enthusiastic and knowledgeable and would not hesitate to recommend her to others. "

Best way to visit Granada

"I visited Granada with my 82 year old mother and 14 year old son. I wanted them to see the Alhambra with a guide, but I was nervous about being able to keep up with a tour group. My son also take in information differently than most people and I wanted him to be able to ask as many questions as he wanted. Ana's tour met these needs and more. Ana struck the perfect balance between being friendly and professional. She kept us moving, but without pressure. I, who had visited the Alhambra twice before, learned so much and saw so much I had never seen before. I highly recommend Ana for touring the Alhambra and visiting any other parts of Granada!"

guest Sheri

Ana is AMAZING!

"It was our first time using WithLocals and what a pleasant experience it was thanks to Ana! We booked the Alhambra tour with the gardens. Ana made the whole experience fun, educational, and super interesting. She is extremely knowledgeable about Spanish history and the overall context in which the Alhambra was build and used. This was quite a treat for us who love to learn about history and how does it relate to both the past and present. She kept the tour going at a very manageable pace that never felt rushed or too slow. Do yourself a favor and do not visit the Alhambra without her. "

guest Jose

I learned so much, had an amazing time!

"Carolina is a terrific guide and is personable, warm, and makes sure to cover the things you’re interested in. I learned so many interesting things - about the local flora, architecture, and how to imagine locals were living hundreds of years ago. Her tour was the highlight of my time in Granada; can’t wait to go back!"

guest Kerigan

My unforgettable Granada experience

"My tour of Granada with Alicia was truly one to be remembered. Despite being a last-minute booking, Alicia accommodated me without any issues, which immediately set a positive tone for the day. From the moment we met, it was clear that this would be no ordinary tour. Alicia's passion for Granada shone through as she led me to the city's hidden secrets, steering clear of the touristy spots while still allowing me to soak in the beauty of the surroundings. It felt like I was exploring Granada with a knowledgeable friend rather than following a rigid and boring itinerary. Alicia's insider knowledge and willingness to share her favorite local haunts made the experience all the more special. What truly made this tour unforgettable was the rapport we developed along the way. We bonded over shared experiences, exchanging stories about our respective cultures and traditions. Alicia's insights into Spanish culture enriched my understanding of the city and its people, adding depth and meaning to the experience. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to explore Granada in an authentic and immersive way. Alicia's warmth, expertise, and genuine passion for her city make her the perfect guide for an unforgettable adventure. Don't hesitate to book a tour with Alicia – you won't regret it!"

Amazing walk

"Ana was fantastic. She shared so much about this beautiful city. Her love for history and knowledge of the historical events that shaped this region really came through. Thank you Ana. "

Tour of Granada with Alicia

"My husband and I spent the weekend in Granada. We had the pleasure of having Alicia show us around this beautiful city. She was very accommodating on meeting at our preferred time and showed us things we definitely would not have seen or known about on our own. We had the extra bonus of her teaching me a little Spanish. The 3 hrs with her flew by. Alicia was extremely friendly and passionate on what she does. We felt like we were walking around the city with a friend we have known for years. I would HIGHLY recommend her to anyone interested in having a tour!!! "

Granada Private Tours

Expert guides, luxury vehicles, tour granada your way.

Many of our guests tell us that their private tour experience in Granada was the highlight of their Spanish vacation. Quite simply, this relatively small town of Granada, found at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountains in the Andalucia region of the country has an essence that captures people’s hearts and souls in a way that few others can compare with.

Our guided tour experiences have been designed to bring you closer to what makes Granada so unique. By walking the streets and discovering the captivating history of the town on a private tour of Granada, forged as it was through the confluence of Jewish, Moorish, and Christian people and traditions, exploring the Sacromonte caves where Flamenco dancing is thriving in the same locale it is said to originate from, and getting a true flavor of the city that, more than any other in Spain, proudly holds onto the tradition of offering complimentary and varied Tapas with every drink ordered!

Ultimately though, no trip to Granada would be complete without a guided tour experience of the Alhambra Palace. The Islamic and later Christian Palace and fortress which is a UNESCO World Heritage site and there is no better way to visit this masterpiece than with our exclusive skip-the-line tickets and officially licensed guides.

Private tours of the alhambra.

view from mountainside of Alhambra palace in Granada

The Alhambra palace was the last stronghold of the Moors in Spain, and entering the magnificently preserved structure is truly like stepping back through time as your private guide brings to life the historic characters, dramatic tales, and war stories that span from the formation of Granada under the Nasrid dynasty in 1246 through to the Alhambra Decree in 1492 after the Catholic Monarchs Isabella of Castille and Ferdinand of Aragon had rejoined the kingdoms and expelled practicing Jews in the territories or enforced conversion.

On your private tour of the Alhambra you will visit:

Nasrid Palaces

These mansion complexes were constructed to be the official residence of the Moorish rulers of Granada and the attention to detail of the glorious mosaics, tiling and ornamental designs of the interiors and courtyards have to be seen in the flesh to be fully appreciated.

Highlights of the Nasrid Palaces to visit with your guide are, the Mexuar hall: a courtroom over which the heads of state would preside, and later a Christian Chapel. The Palace of Comares: This structure served as the Sultan’s headquarters, and thus the most important quarter of the Palace at the time. The Golden Room Courtyard and Lion’s Palace: A series of rooms belonging to the Royal family, each with a gorgeous gallery to provide access to the royal chambers. At the center of the courtyard, you’ll find the fountain consisting of lions carved out of marble.

Charles V Palace

Construction on the palace began in 1527 in Renaissance style with a circular courtyard surrounded by many Classical Greek-style columns. This palace was built outside the grounds of the main Alhambra building to provide additional luxury and comfort for the Emperor and his family.

The remains of the residential neighborhood.

The oldest surviving part of the Alhambra, this fortress and armaments section was constructed under the rulership of Mohammed I, the founder of the Nasrid dynasty, in 1238 and was built on top of the earlier Zirid Dynasty fortress in the 11th Century.

Generalife Garden

Built into the “Hill of the Sun”, walk in the footsteps of the rulers, Princes, Kings, and Queens who would come here to relax and join with nature on a break from official life at the palace.

5 star review

Your guide will now take you on a walking tour through the Albaicin district, located on top of a hill overlooking the Alhambra. Sometimes referred to as Granada’s Old Town, the history of the Albaicin is very much Moorish in nature and the district retains the same street plan that was laid down all the way back under the Nasrid period from the 13th century and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

In the present day, Its narrow cobbled streets and whitewashed homes make it one of the most authentic neighborhoods in Granada. Alongside guided tours along the city walls and medieval gates, monuments that date back to the era when Granada was under Islamic rule and former Moorish churches, you can find lots of shops selling oriental goods, including spices and dried fruit.

The Carrera del Darro runs parallel to the river Daro and is one of the oldest and most picturesque streets in the neighborhood, while visiting the historic homes in the area and in particular, the Casa de Zafra museum, which was once the residence of a nobleman, provides the perfect opportunity for your guide to discuss how the wealthy used to live in the area.

Explore Granada Cathedral & Royal Cathedral

skyline of Granada with granada cathedral prominent in the foreground.

Join your guide for a private tour of the Renaissance-style Granada Cathedral, symbolically constructed on top of the site where the Great Mosque stood, and the nearby Gothic-style Royal Chapel which houses the tombs of King Fernando and Queen Isabel.

Granada Cathedral

Despite Granada being a comparatively small city, it houses the 2nd largest Cathedral in the entirety of Spain and the first built in the Renaissance style in the country. Located in the center of the city, it was designed as a statement piece to signify to the world that the Christian leaders were in complete control of the region.

Your guide will reveal the secrets and symbolism throughout the architect Diego de Siloe’s design, the altar and Cupola, The ornate main entrance known as the Door of Forgiveness and the complex tales told throughout the many gorgeous stained glass windows.

Royal Chapel

Visit the tombs of the Catholic Monarchs Isabel of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon. On your guided tour here you will visit the facade and “The Surrender of Granada” artwork by Francisco Padilla. Step inside with your guide to discuss the Temple and the Gothic Vaults it contains and of course, the stunning main Alterface.

Sacromonte Hills & Flamenco Performance

Sacromonte, village Granada

Built into Valparaiso Hill, your guide will take you to explore the Sacromonte neighborhood, where you will find the Cuevas that housed the gypsy population in both historic and modern times. A highlight of the tour will be taking the opportunity to enter one of the caves to enjoy a Flamenco performance in the spiritual home of the art form.

Visit the Museum of the Sacromonte Caves

While walking the hills, it is common that the locals will sometimes invite you into their homes, however, we recommend visiting the museum with your private guide to gain a true understanding and appreciation of how the locals have lived and built their society here from the time they arrived.

Live Flamenco Performance

Step into one of the decorated caves to enjoy a famous Las Zambras Flamenco performance. Performed by relatives of the famous Maria La Canastera you will feel the passion and emotion of the Flamenco in this intimate setting.

Close up of Pinxo Tapas in Spain

Granada is perhaps the most fun city in all of Spain to enjoy an evening of “Tapas Hopping” from bar to restaurant.

Perhaps more than any city in the country, Granada keeps the old Spanish custom of serving free Tapas with every drink ordered very much alive. We don’t mean a miserly serving of bar nuts or a slice of bread either, real Spanish Meatballs, Paella, and Fish dishes provide just a sample of what we are talking about.

Whoever said there was no such thing as a free lunch had clearly never visited this Andalusian paradise! Options differ from each bar and restaurant, but you will either be served the daily special, an option to share, or you will have the opportunity to select from a Tapas menu when you order your beverage.

Granada One Day Itinerary [StepbyStep]

1. breakfast at the traditional café 4 gatos restaurant.

a plate with Mediterranean breakfast on a wooden table and 2 glasses of orange juice.

No one should start the one day in Granada without a Spanish breakfast. Café 4 Gato s is one of Granada’s oldest and most popular breakfast spots.

You can find Café 4 Gatos in one of the city’s most romantic neighborhoods; this traditional café is a must-do on your one-day itinerary.

The atmosphere of Café 4 Gatos is one of its main draws.

With a charming but on-trend vibe, friendly staff, and stunning views of the Alhambra from its terrace, this café is one of the city’s hidden gems and best pit-stops for coffee and healthy breakfasts.

Calling all vegetarians, vegans, or those needing a gluten-free breakfast, this cafe is for you.

One thing, though, is the portions are enormous, so if you have a small appetite, either share your food or take a Tupperware box to eat what’s left later.

Once you are fuelled and ready to go, we are hitting the main attraction, as you need a decent amount of time to take in all the culture before lunch.

Opening times:

Monday – Sunday 8.30 – 16.00

2. Alhambra: Nasrid Palaces & Generalife

aerial view of alhambra in granada from the Mirador de San Nicolás en Albayzín

Second, on your one day in Granada itinerary is a marvelous palace with an impressive history.

The Alhambra is the most famous palace in Spain, if not Europe, and the chances are if you’re Granada in a day, the Alhambra Palace is at top of your sightseeing list.

Located on one of Granada’s highest hills, the Nasrid rulers built the Alhambra castle in the 14th century, and now the Alhambra is one of Spain’s best-loved tourist attractions. – Get tickets in advance here.

The palace has several buildings, including the Mexuar Palace, Comares Palace, Palace of the Lions, Royal Baths, and the Christian Section.

Not forgetting the Partial Gardens, it is home to one of Spain’s most impressive and beautiful gardens.

The palace also has one of the world’s best-preserved monuments in its center, the Generalife Palace, surrounded by Granada’s stunningly beautiful gardens and an amphitheater.

It is a bucket list place others talk about, but you can only experience it in full by being there.

If you’re visiting in the summer, it will be sweltering; the weather in Granada, Spain, is famous for its sunny days, so visit the gardens first before the day heats up.

There is a lot to see in Granada in 1 day, so this is a taster trip because you must return to get the full flavor of the Alhambra Palace.

3. Cathedral of Granada & Royal Chapel

aerial view of Granada Cathedral on a bright day

Begin your visit Granada in one day by visiting the Cathedral of Granada and its Royal Chapel, one of Spain’s most important religious buildings.

The cathedral is a 16th-century religious homage and an example of one of the world’s most beautiful Gothic-Renaissance cathedrals.

Situated in the historic heart of Granada, and is one of the most historically rich places in Southern Spain. – Check the guided tour here.

When approaching the cathedral, look up – Alonso Cano (the Spanish Michelangelo) designed the facade as a mixture of Renaissance, Gothic, and Baroque styles with a bit of Neoclassicism thrown in.

Not to be outdone, The Royal Chapel dedicated to St. John the Baptist was King Ferdinand’s gift to the Christian world.

While we stand in awe of the Cathedral of Granada, Royal Chapel, we love the Plaza de San Miguel Bajo , one of three squares where you can stand and contemplate life while looking back at the Alhambra.

4. Corral del Carbón

the entrance to the alhambra palace in granada, spain

After you explore the Cathedral of Granada, immerse yourself again in Granada’s rich history by visiting Corral del Carbón.

This ancient Moorish inn, dating back to the 14th century, stands as one of the few remaining Nasrid buildings in the city.

Step into its atmospheric courtyard, adorned with intricate stucco work and a beautiful fountain, and imagine the bustling trade and cultural exchange that once took place here.

You will be pleased to know it’s time for lunch for your day trip to Granada…

5. Lunch at La Autentica Carmela

closeup of spanish paella in a traditional pan

The great thing about La Auténtica Carmela is that it’s open all day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a rustic interior of exposed brick walls and beams.

The cafe has a terrace that opens onto one of the city’s best squares, one of the most popular lunch spots for paella in Granada .

The menu features contemporary Spanish cuisine with a few traditional dishes as well.

Specialties include black pudding croquettes, pork tartar, or one of their signature dishes, such as a classic stone-grilled steak or famous paellas .

The prices are reasonable, and the quality is top-notch – a perfect lunch spot to take one last break before you embark on your one day in Granada adventure.

Let’s get back to our Granada itinerary…

Opening times: Monday to Sunday 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM and 7:00 PM – 11:00 PM

6. Explore the town of Albaicín

aerial view of the town of Albaicín. With white walls and brown roofs.

The Albaicín originated as an urban area around the 10th century and is full of places that remind visitors of its Muslim past.

The Town of Albaicín comprises Lower Albaicín, Upper Albaicín and Sacromonte.

We will start in Lower Albaicín, only five minutes from the cathedral in Plaza Nueva, next to Santa Ana. The cathedral contains the Royal Chancery Building, which belongs to King Phillip II.

Stop to admire the Fountain of the Bull— Pilar Del Toro , the last notable work of Diego de Siloe, a local artist of great repute.

We are now moving on to the San Juan De Dios Museum, where St. John of God died—or so legend has it.

7. Carrera Del Darro

a street in Granada at a dusky day

Moving down the Carrera Del Darro, we can walk along the River Darro in the shadow of the Alhambra Palace.

Cross the bridge to the Bano del Nogal if you have time pop in, one of the few historic baths that have survived since the 11th century.

Opposite is the Puente de Cad i, which links Albaicín to the Alhambra. We can’t leave the town of Albaicín without visiting the Paseo de la Triste, one of the most charming places in the world.

This part of our one day in Granada itinerary, Spain, would only be complete with a visit to Mirador de San Nicolas .

8. Mirador de San Nicolas

a view of Granada with a blue and orange from Mirador de San Nicolas

This little-known hilltop terrace offers one of the most breathtaking views over Granada, one you will never hear about in a guidebook.

From here, you can see the entire city, including the Alhambra and the Sierra Nevada mountains.

It’s a peaceful and beautiful place to take in Granada’s beauty away from the crowds. It’s a place you should visit Granada in one day.

9. Carmen de la Victoria

a view of Alhambra from Carmen de la Victoria filled with greenery

Step into Carmen de la Victoria , a serene garden tucked away in Granada, offering captivating vistas of the city and the majestic Alhambra.

This hidden gem is a haven of tranquility, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in its natural beauty and soak in the panoramic views.

While a brief during your Granada 1 day itinerary is sufficient to appreciate its charm, every moment spent in Carmen de la Victoria will leave a lasting impression.

10. Sacromonte Caves Museum

a view of the Cave Museum with a mountain covered in green and trees

Sacromonte is part of the Albaicín region and was home to 18th-century gypsies, who lived in the caves and built their houses by digging into the hillside.

The Sacromonte Caves Museum is one of Granada’s most visited attractions and one of its most interesting cultural experiences.

The museum is situated in one of the caves, from where you will have a great view over Granada and look at the artifacts that its former inhabitants left behind.

The museum will also give you an insight into the area’s history and its customs and traditions – music, flamenco, gastronomy, and what went on in everyday life.

As one of Granada’s most iconic attractions, a visit to the Sacromonte Caves Museum is a must-see if you only have one day in Granada.

The caves are one of the best ways to get an insight into this gorgeous Spanish city. It’s one of the things to do in Granada, Spain in one day!

After all that walking, it’s time to rest your lower back with a traditional massage…

Monday to Sunday 10 am- 08 pm

11. Relax with a massage at the Hammam Al Ándalus

an indoor pool at the Hamman al Andaluz

The Hammam Al Ándalus is one of Granada’s most renowned places for relaxation and well-being. This traditional Turkish bathhouse will make the best one day in Granada.

The experience includes a refreshingly cold or hot pool with a light show, a massage, a sauna, steam rooms, and other treatments such as body wraps and facials.

The Hammam Al Ándalus is one of Granada’s most unique attractions and will leave you feeling relaxed, rejuvenated, and ready to start your evening adventures.

When you have 1 day in Granada, you must do a tapas crawl. It’s on our list of essential things to do in Granada, Spain…

12. See a Flamenco Show

You can’t visit Granada, especially Sacromonte, without seeing an authentic Flamenco show.

Flamenco was developed and performed in the gypsy caves of Sacromonte, one of Granada’s oldest neighborhoods.

Sacromonte is still one of the best places in Granada to experience Flamenco today.

The lively rhythms of a live flamenco show will accompany you during one of Granada’s most cherished and talented acts.

Real Flamenco is a one-of-a-kind experience that is hot on the list of things to do in Granada, and if you get the right show, one that will stay with you long after your holiday is just a memory.

Shows you should see: El Templo Del Flamenco on C. Pernaleros Alto, 41 is a Flamenco show full of power and passion, and one which will have you feeling like a part of Granada’s vibrant nightlife.

A great alternative is Tablao Flamenco La Alborea Granada on C. Pan, 3.

What makes this show stand out is the central location and the beautiful performances by some of the city’s leading Flamenco artists.

Whichever one you choose, one thing is sure – a one day in Granada wouldn’t be complete without experiencing one of these incredible Flamenco shows.

If traditional shows have you hot under the collar and ready to party, take a look at our next suggestion.

13. Tapas Crawl in Granada

various spanish tapas plates on a wooden table

For those who don’t know, tapas in this part of Spain is a snack served with your drink in some bars and cafes.

In some places, the snack is free when you buy an alcoholic drink; in others, each tapa is a few euros.

They can be as simple as a piece of cheese or a plate of Padron peppers, up to an elaborate seafood concoction on a wedge of bread.

Tapas crawling is one of the best things in Granada, as it gives you a taste of the city’s unique cuisine.

We recommend starting in the late afternoon at Bar La Riviera in Cetti Meriem, 7, for traditional fares such as calamari and croquettes.

Stop off at La Sitarilla for small plates of cheese, olives, and a glass of cava before heading to one of the city’s most famous tapas bars – Bar Poë, C.

Verónica de la Magdalena , 40 – this traditional bar serves delicious plates such as garlic prawns, pork cheeks and patatas bravas.

Finally, round off your tapas crawl with drinks at the Restaurante Parador de Granada bar for the fantastic view and stunning surroundings.

Now you will be ready for some entertainment.

14. Pubs & Clubs Crawl with Drinks & Club Entry Ticket

people dancing at a nightclub in Marbella

Granada is one of Spain’s vibrant nightlife cities, and one of the most exciting things to do in Granada after dark is a pub and club crawl.

City trips and short getaways are a great way to get a feel for a place, and Granada lives up to its reputation.

Start your evening in Granada at one of the city’s most famous pubs – The Amsterdam Café Pub on C.

Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, 52, is an excellent drinking venue in classic pub style. It is much less Amsterdam than the back streets of Paris—you could be anywhere, but the staff is friendly.

Move on to Café Pub Rainbow, C. Marqués Don Gonzalo. An excellent place for metalheads and those who love loud music and exciting decor. Next is the Stereo Music Club on C.

Almona del Boquerón to party until dawn and enjoy one of the best clubbing experiences in Granada.

Finally, for one last drink and a dance, head to the Efecto Club, one of the most famous places in Granada.

With a lively crowd and a great vibe, this is one place that you will want to take advantage of if you’re looking for one memorable day in Granada.

15. Plaza Nueva

a church with a clock tower in the middle of an old town and the plaza

Finish your Granada day trip at Plaza Nueva , a bustling square bordered by cozy cafes and inviting restaurants.

Take a moment to unwind with a refreshing drink, surrounded by the vibrant energy of the city.

Reflect on your one day in Granada adventures while soaking in the lively atmosphere of this charming plaza—a perfect conclusion to your day of exploration.

Best Time to Plan for One Day in Granada

girl sitting next to a road sign with granada

The best time to plan one day in Granada is usually between April and October when the city enjoys warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine.

The best visiting time, in our opinion, is the week that leads up to Easter Sunday to see the best festival of the year, Semana Santa.

Semana Santa is one of the biggest religious festivals in Spain and one you will want to attend if you visit Granada.

The weather in Granada is not too hot but warm enough to step out without your coat.

Visiting Granada in April or early October can also be a great idea.

At these times, the streets are lively, the street musicians are playing Spanish music, and the flamenco dancers are in full swing.

Don’t forget to buy souvenirs at The Alcaicería Market, something to remember your trip – Granada’s Great Bazaar and the ancient Moorish silk market.

Initially a collection of streets between Plaza Nueva and Plaza Bib-Rambla, the area was packed with Arab silk sellers, spices, and other luxury items.

The Calle Alcaicera is the last preserved portion of the bazaar. It is a historic and culturally rich neighborhood with intriguing and exotic products for sale.

Consider hand-painted pottery, inlaid wood, and stained glass lamps. The Granada bazaar is quite touristy, with narrow lanes filled with little souvenir and fabric shops.

Finding somewhere lovely to stay in Southern Spain is always tricky, so here are our recommendations to include in your travel itinerary.

Best Hotels in Granada, Southern Spain

1. la corrala del realejo – boutique apartamentos ***** – luxury.

living room with TV and wooden ceiling at La Corrala del Realejo

La Corrala Del Realejo is the perfect place to stay for luxury travelers looking for a one-of-a-kind experience.

In other words, nothing is too much trouble at La Corrala del Realejo

2. BiBo Real Chancilleria **** – Mid-Range

BiBo Real Chancilleria is one of the best hotel apartments in Granada, Southern Spain.

Situated in the Albayzin part of Granada, this 3/4-star property offers an array of facilities to make your stay comfortable.

The BiBo Real Chancilleria is ideally located close to attractions such as Alhambra Palace and Granada Cathedral, making it one of the best places to stay for those looking to explore Granada’s sights.

Plus, one can take a pleasant stroll in the Albaicín and visit the Nasrid Palaces. And if one is an outdoor enthusiast, one can hike up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains while they’re here.

3. Palacio Almagra *** – Budget

a cozy of the bedroom of Palacio Almagra with light brown undertones

The Palacio Almagra may be budgeted, but it’s one of the best picks for a one day stay in Granada.

Located 650 yards from Granada Cathedral, this former 17th-century building offers free wifi, air-conditioned rooms, and fully equipped kitchens.

Visitors can explore one of the most popular places in Granada, with attractions like La Alhambra Palace, Generalife Gardens, and the Royal Chapel of Granada all within reach.

Besides, you can stroll down one of the many cobblestone streets, take in a tapas bar or two, and shop in one of the artisanal souvenir shops.

The historic atmosphere is why Palacio Almagra is one of the best hotels for travelers exploring Granada on a 1 day itinerary.

Getting Around Granada

hop on hop off bus in Malaga

Granada is easy to explore on foot, but after a full day walking around, you might need to use one of the public transport options.

You could do a Granada day trip from Malaga or Seville.

Taxis are one of the easiest ways to get around the city, although one should be aware that in Granada, taxi fares are expensive.

There are other ways to explore the city, such as the Hop-on/Hop-off bus. – Check out tickets in advance here.

Public transport, such as buses and trams, is an efficient, if not boring, way to get around. You can purchase tickets in one of the many kiosks or online through the official websites.

Better yet, taking a horse-drawn carriage around the city is possible.

These carriages are one of the most romantic and unique ways to explore Granada.

Expect to drop a lot of cash for the privilege, but if this relaxed kind of travel is your thing, then you can find them in some of the main squares like Plaza Nueva.

Tourists Welcome! Uncrowded Travel Destinations in Spain

While many of Spain's most popular destinations struggle with overtourism, here are 10 places that deserve more visitors.

By Peter Barron

July 1, 2024

“Tourists go home.”

Those words, daubed on walls and reproduced in countless news stories this year, make uncomfortable reading for anyone thinking of visiting Spain .

The sentiment poses a dilemma as well for those of us who write travel guides to this wonderful country. While we’ve always encouraged visitors to venture beyond the hot spots, it is troubling that some citizens in must-see places like Barcelona, Seville, and Granada are crying “ Enough !”

Yet you’d be wrong to think visitors are no longer welcome in Spain. This year more than 80 million people will visit, yet many exquisite places remain largely untouched by tourism.

In the spirit of what the travel industry calls “dispersal,” here are 10 spectacular Spanish destinations that deserve more—not fewer—visitors.

tours by locals granada spain

Badajoz and Olivenza

In Spain's little-visited western region of Extremadura , Badajoz has long been outshone by its better-known neighbors, Cáceres and Mérida. But now Badajoz is emerging from the shadows. The recently restored Plaza Alta , resplendent in red and white, is a great place to start a walking tour. Afterward, stroll along the ramparts of the Alcazaba , the enormous 12th-century citadel that overlooks the city and the Guadiana River.

To experience the benefits of the renovations that Badajoz’s hospitality industry is undergoing, don’t miss Las Tres Campanas , a 19th-century toy emporium repurposed as a hotel and dining complex.

Half an hour’s drive from Badajoz, Olivenza feels like another country entirely. The town belonged to Portugal until 1801, and the intricately embellished architecture of the churches and public buildings makes it one of Spain’s most attractive locales. When we visited in May, we had the broad streets and monumental castle almost to ourselves.

The setting alone—perched on a deep gorge between two rivers—demands your attention. But that’s just the start. Since the 1960s Cuenca (pictured at the top of this page) has been the center of Spain’s abstract art scene. Among the cutting-edge galleries here, one even  occupies a historic clifftop  casa colgada (hanging house) .

Cuenca is also celebrated for its cuisine. Another hanging house reopened recently as a fine dining restaurant , while the city’s pastel-painted Plaza Mayor is a picturesque spot to try the specialties of La Mancha .

The green, northern region of Galicia is best known for the world-famous pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, but Ourense—30 minutes by train from Santiago—is worth the detour, especially if your limbs ache. The city is blessed with a spectacular setting on the Minho river and has around 70 natural hot springs, many of which can be enjoyed for free.

Or treat yourself at Termas Outariz , a Japanese-style onsen offering zen circuits and massages. Just don't get so relaxed that you skip the city’s busy bars, where Galicia’s trademark scallops ( volandeiras ) abound.

El Puerto de Santa María

After Jerez and Sanlúcar de Barrameda, El Puerto de Santa María is the less-visited third point of the Sherry Triangle . It was once called the city of a hundred palaces—built on trade with the Americas—and some of those structures still stand, embellished with ostentatious coats of arms.

El Puerto is home to Osborne , one of Spain’s oldest wine and brandy makers. Visit the bodegas to taste rare old sherries and learn the history of the famous black bull logo you’ll see silhouetted on highways across Spain. Take a bus ride from town to reach excellent beaches with lifeguards, toilet facilities, and bars.

tours by locals granada spain

There are thousands of castles scattered across Spain, but few where you can spend the night. Sigüenza’s parador hotel is set within a magnificent hilltop fortification dating from the Middle Ages.

At the other end of this walkable city is one of Spain’s finest restaurants. El Doncel offers Michelin-starred cookery and paired wines at surprisingly reasonable prices. The name El Doncel refers to Sigüenza’s most famous son, a young nobleman who died in battle in 1486. You can visit his family home and see his touching tomb in the cathedral, where an alabaster statue depicts the knight lying on his side and reading a book.

Úbeda and Baeza

Two hours by bus from Granada, Úbeda is a tranquil town filled with Spain’s finest Renaissance buildings—the work of the architect Andrés de Vandelvira, who was commissioned by wealthy local nobility in the 16th century. The best way to appreciate this UNESCO World Heritage Site is simply to wander at length around the plazas and churches. You could start and finish in Plaza de Vázquez de Molina , which might just be Spain’s most perfectly proportioned square. Then visit Úbeda’s craft shops, which specialize in beautifully decorated ceramics and esparto basketry.

If finding one Renaissance gem in the middle of the Andalusian countryside is a surprise, there is another just 10 kilometers (6 miles) down the road. Baeza is about half the size of Úbeda, but contains almost as many Renaissance buildings.

It was once—briefly—the capital city, and Valladolid has witnessed many key moments in Spanish history. The Catholic monarchs married here, Columbus died here, and Cervantes wrote part of Don Quixote in a house you can still visit.

Marvel at the elaborate facade of the Iglesia de San Pablo , where Felipe II was christened, having been spirited through the window of a palace next door. Valladolid’s vast, red-painted Plaza Mayor is reminiscent of its famous counterpart in Madrid, minus the tacky caricaturists, living statues, and throngs of tourists.

And speaking of Madrid . . .

tours by locals granada spain

Madrid’s Less Touristy Side

What is Madrid doing on this list? Spain’s thriving capital seems to have little difficulty absorbing the visitor numbers that drive other cities crazy. But when you go, try to get away from the busiest tourist areas.

Of course you should see El Prado, one of the world’s great art museums, but also seek out the Goya-focused Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando or Museo Sorolla , where Impressionist master Joaquín Sorolla lived and worked.

Madrid has lots of green spaces besides El Retiro park. Wander through the almond groves at Quinta de los Molinos or combine art and a riverside walk at Matadero , the huge cultural complex that occupies Madrid’s former slaughterhouse.

Avoid touristy bars on Plaza Mayor and Plaza de Santa Ana and head instead to where madrileños go, such as Calle de Ponzano or Plaza de Olavide .

And leave behind the Sunday morning crowds at El Rastro flea market for more creative fare at Mercado de Motores on the second weekend of each month.
