Crown Prosecution Service authorises the police to press charges

- Updated 10:06, 3 Feb 2022
A timeshare company boss who I’ve written about previously in my Daily Mirror column is among 18 people facing fraud and money laundering charges.
The Crown Prosecution Service yesterday announced that it has authorised the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit to charge Mark Rowe and 17 others with 79 counts relating to an alleged “large-scale fraud targeting timeshare owners” between January 2013 and 2017.
Rowe, 51, of Taunton and Tenerife, and the others were said to be directors, sales reps or administrators at companies including Monster Group Travel, Monster Rewards and sellmytimeshare.com.
Peter Highway, senior investigating officer from the Crime Unit, said: “This is clearly a significant step forward in a complex fraud investigation that began more than five years ago and has affected thousands who have collectively invested upwards of £25 million.”
Andrew Penhale, Chief Crown Prosecutor said: “The CPS has reviewed a file of evidence from South West Regional Organised Crime Unit and has authorised the investigation team to charge 18 people with 79 offences related to a timeshare fraud.
“The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against these defendants are now active and that they have the right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”
The full list of those facing charges is as follows.
Mark Rowe, 51, of Bishops Lydeard in Taunton and Los Blanquitos in Tenerife;
Simon Walker, 55, of Costa Adeje in Tenerife;
Louise Matthews-Oakenfold, 49, of Santa Cruz, Tenerife;

We have written extensively about a number of different timeshare scammers in the past, including RSB Legal , Silverpoint , and Club La Costa . There always seems to be a pattern that emerges, particularly with regards to the organisation and setup of the companies in general. Aggressive tactics are used, significant sums charged, and they disappear after 12-18 months.
In this next case, little has been shared so far since the case is still ongoing. However, the scale could be incredibly significant if the charges against them are brought to fruition. Following a five-year investigation, 18 defendants face a trial involving a potential £25m timeshare scam . The first hearing was scheduled for 31 March at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London, but no more information has since been released concerning this case.
The CPS has however provided enough information regarding the scale of operations, who was involved, and what each defendant was charged with in connection to the case.
A Monster Of A Timeshare Scam Setup
With up to 18 defendants potentially being involved, a total of 79 offences brought against them, and £25m being invested by possible victims, this case spans far and wide to say the least. Three companies are at the heart of it all as well – Monster Group Travel, Monster Rewards and sellmytimeshare.com. The defendants apparently purported to be directors, sales people and administrators of said companies, and are being charged with multiple counts of fraud, money laundering, and forgery. Thousands of people were reported to be affected by this case.
Timeshare scams are highly complex, incredibly lengthy operations that almost always end in prosecution for those committing the offences. It is always important that you do your due diligence when it comes to timeshares due to the amount of scams that are waiting out there. By doing so, you’ll avoid wasting time and protect the money you’ve worked hard for.
18 Defendants Were Charged Altogether
Those charged include:

- David Taylor, 62, of Shiptonthorpe, East Yorkshire

- Joanne Physick, 42, of Los Christianos Arona, Tenerife
- Joanne Taylor, 47, of Shiptonthorpe, East Yorkshire
- Jodi Beard, 39, of Costa Adeje, Tenerife
- Josephine Cuthill-Fox, 57, of Battenhall Place, Worcester
- Lee Evans, 48, of Walmer Bridge, Preston, Lancashire
- Lisa Salih, 52, of Upton, Poole, Dorset
- Louise Matthews-Oakenfold, 49, of Santa Cruz, Tenerife

Two defendants were charged with money laundering between 1 January 2013 and 31 December 2017 while working as directors of Monster Credits:
- Nicola Rowe

What The CPS Have Said On This Matter

“The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against these defendants are now active and that they have the right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”
How Athena Law & Stephen Boyd Can Help
Being on the receiving end of a timeshare scam can feel awful. Getting duped into handing over your own hard-earned cash is simply terrible and shouldn’t happen to anyone, yet here we are. However, this all doesn’t have to end badly. In fact, it should have a happier ending instead.
That’s why, at Athena Law , we are here to help. Our highly qualified solicitors have represented hundreds of timeshare owners over the years. We have extensive experience of helping to release clients from inherently unfair and unenforceable timeshare contracts, and have brought claims that have been connected to or arisen from the sale of timeshare and similar products.
In respect to Monster Travel Athena law working in conjunction with David Cox of Tess Paralegal Services Limited and litigation funders has successfully represented hundreds of victims in recovering compensation with a collective value of in excess of £6 million. Clients were represented on a “no win no fee” basis and compensation was only recovered following painstaking research and preparation of detailed witness statements (similar fact evidence) in support of the claims.
Mr. Stephen Boyd has been a solicitor for over 20 years and has cemented his reputation as one of the leading solicitors in this field over the last decade, ably supported by his incredible team. Contact us for an independent review and allow us to pursue your claim in a legal manner.

Austin to the rescue
I spoke with Michael to book a vacation, and actually thinking, what the F@!# is wrong with this person. Then I spoke to Austin who is my primary contact and now new best friend. He was able to walk me through the three packages we purchased and how they interact with each other. His patience allowed us to understand the Monster Expeience. If it wasn't for him we would have walked away, and just fiqure we were scammed and chalk it up as a loss. Thank you Austin for spending the time with us on a Memorial Day.

It feels like a scam
It feels like a scam - I purchased a package for $199, but then they charged me $163 for services, $212 for taxes, and $230 for parking without my permission. They took these amounts from my bank account without informing me. When I try to contact customer service, I have to wait for hours on hold. And when I finally get through, they hang up without answering my question.

What People Say About TCA...
We contacted the Timeshare Association for advice about getting a refund of fees due to the lockdown and also how to cancel our timeshare ownership. We received a very quick response and an opportunity to discuss the matter by telephone. The gentleman I spoke to gave us very clear advice with suggested actions. He also said we could phone back if not successful. We followed his advice and were able to properly and amicably hand back our timeshare. Many thanks to all concerned! It is a millstone no longer round our necks!
What can we say? What has taken a harrowing year to resolve within a harrowing year we have finally got a fantastic positive result from Seasons. We would like to say a huge thank you to you personally Daniel for all your help and guidance in this matter as without your intervention we believe this issue would have never been resolved. So thank you from the bottom of our hearts, it means so much to us.
Contacted TCA after reading a number of articles, best thing I could have done, very helpful, with a great wealth of knowledge of the timeshare industry. TCA definitely deserves wider press coverage. Can't rate the assistance provided high enough. Thank you, TCA.

Dad stopping superintendent from shaking daughter’s hand at graduation sparks cries of racism: ‘don’t want her touching him’.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.
A Wisconsin father was caught on camera shoving aside a school administrator to stop him from shaking his daughter’s hand during her high school graduation — an incident some are saying appears racially charged.
“That’s my daughter,” the father, who is white, was heard saying as he leaped to the graduation stage and shoved aside Baraboo School District Superintendent Rainey Briggs, who is black, in late May.
“I don’t want her touching him,” the father continued in the footage as he pushed Briggs aside — just moments before his daughter was to shake his hand as she received her diploma.
Briggs was heard telling the father to take his hands off him, while the daughter and others on stage looked on with alarm and confusion.
The father was escorted out of the building and was later charged with disorderly conduct, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel .
It remains unclear what brought about the incident.
“No one should have to endure this type of gross & racist conduct,” wrote Wisconsin state Rep. Francesca Hong in an X post after the footage was released.
“Dr. Briggs is an excellent superintendent who cares deeply about the well-being of all students in the Baraboo District,” she added.
Briggs and other members of the Baraboo school board have been at the center of controversy in recent weeks, according to the Journal Sentinel, with his name being lumped in alongside calls for board president Kevin Vodak to be removed over accusations that he abused his powers to raise administrator salaries.
But Vodak was onstage during the ceremony and even shook the daughter’s hand, while the father only targeted Briggs.
The school board has not commented on what motivated the incident, but said in a statement that there was no place for “threatening, intimidating, or physically harming behaviors against anyone in our school district community.”

“That this adult felt emboldened to behave in this way in front of hundreds of students and other adults should deeply trouble us all; this type of behavior will not be tolerated,” the Baraboo Board of Education said.
Baraboo High School was previously the center of racial controversy in 2018 when a group of then-students were photographed giving the Nazi salute during a prom photo shoot, while a boy in the front row also flashed an “Okay” sign, which has become associated with white power groups.

‘Baby Reindeer’ lawsuit: Alleged ‘real Martha’ seeks $170 million from Netflix

The woman who allegedly inspired the serial stalker character at the center of Netflix’s hit miniseries “Baby Reindeer” has sued the streaming giant for negligence and defamation.
Fiona Harvey filed a $170-million complaint Thursday in United States district court in California, alleging that Netflix and “Baby Reindeer” creator Richard Gadd told “brutal lies” about her in an effort to “attract more viewers,” “make more money” and “viciously destroy” her life.
Harvey is rumored to be the real-life Martha Scott — the stalker played by Jessica Gunning in the popular TV adaptation of Gadd’s one-man show. In particular, Harvey’s lawsuit takes issue with Netflix depicting Martha as a twice-convicted stalker who sexually assaults Gadd’s character and is sentenced to prison.
Who is the real Martha from ‘Baby Reindeer’? Jessica Gunning says she didn’t need to know
British actor Jessica Gunning explained how she tackled playing the stalker Martha in “Baby Reindeer” and why she didn’t ask creator Richard Gadd about her real-life counterpart.
April 25, 2024
“Defendants told these lies, and never stopped, because it was a better story than the truth,” the complaint reads, “and better stories made money.”
“We intend to defend this matter vigorously and to stand by Richard Gadd’s right to tell his story,” a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement.
As Harvey’s lawsuit points out, the pilot episode of “Baby Reindeer” opens with the message, “this is a true story.”
The show stars Gadd as Donny Dunn, a struggling Scottish stand-up comedian whose life begins to unravel when a woman wanders into the bar where he works and develops an unhealthy obsession with him..
Woman claiming to be real Martha tells Piers Morgan ‘Baby Reindeer’ is ‘hyperbole’
A woman who claims to be the basis for Martha, the mentally ill stalker in Netflix hit ‘Baby Reindeer,’ speaks to TV host Piers Morgan.
May 9, 2024
Though Gadd has said that he and Netflix went to great lengths to obscure the identity of his real stalker, Harvey says in her lawsuit that Donny and Martha’s use of the phrase “hang my curtains” as a euphemism for sex in “Baby Reindeer” caused thousands of internet users to interrogate and suspect the character was based on her.
According to the complaint, the rampant speculation stemmed from a 2014 tweet by @FionaHarvey2014 that tagged @MrRichardGadd and read, “my curtains need hung badly.”
Harvey has since spoken publicly about her alleged history with Gadd and disputed some of the plot points in “Baby Reindeer.” She alleges in her lawsuit that Netflix “did nothing” to fact-check Gadd’s production when making the show.
Harvey is seeking a jury trial.
Earlier this week, Netflix settled another defamation lawsuit brought by former New York City prosecutor Linda Fairstein over her portrayal in Ava DuVernay’s Emmy-winning limited series “When They See Us.”

Crime and public safety | teacher at mountain view school arrested on suspicion of inappropriate conduct with a student, incident allegedly involved 12-year-old graham middle school girl.
A teacher at a Mountain View school was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of inappropriately touching a student, according to a news release from Mountain View police.
A 12-year-old student at Graham Middle School reported in April that Turner had inappropriately touched her, authorities said. Police interviewed the victim and other students who might have been victims or witnesses and later obtained the arrest warrant.
Officials at Mountain View Whisman School District did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Bay Area News Group.
Mountain View police said in the release they were “concerned” there could be additional victims. Anyone who might have been a victim of inappropriate conduct by Turner or any other faculty or staff member is asked to contact Detective Guillermo de Lira at [email protected] .
