How to get a Cambodia visa on arrival, Siem Reap Airport

  • Opens in a new window

In 2023, Cambodia once again began welcoming all tourists and travellers back into the country with no COVID-19 vaccination, testing or quarantine requirements.

The Cambodia Visa on Arrival is now available as it was before the pandemic.

Getting a tourist visa for Cambodia ‘The Kingdom of Wonder’ is one of the most straightforward immigration processes we’ve experienced so far when travelling. UK citizens and many other nationalities can get a 30-day Cambodia visa on arrival (VOA).

It should be noted that some ASEAN nationalities are exempt from needing a Cambodia visa for a specified number of days; whilst some nationalities aren’t eligible for a Cambodia visa on arrival and have to obtain one in advance. More details can be found on the Royal Embassy of Cambodia website.

Each time we’ve visited Cambodia, either on holiday or to live in Siem Reap as Digital Nomads , we’ve gotten a VOA. This post is based on those experiences, validated with up-to-date information from the Royal Embassy of Cambodia.

How to get a Cambodia visa on arrival, Siem Reap Airport

A Cambodia visa on arrival can be obtained on arrival at Siem Reap or Phnom Penh International Airports or at several land-border crossings between Cambodia and Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam, the exact checkpoints are in the Royal Embassy of Cambodia Visa FAQs .

Types of Cambodia Visa on Arrival

There are two types of Cambodia visa on arrival. The different Cambodia visas on arrival costs a different amount:

Cambodia Tourist Visa (T)

The single-entry Cambodia Tourist visa (T-class) costs $30 (£23.30), is valid for 30 days and can be renewed once for a further 30 days without leaving the country.

Cambodia Ordinary Visa (E)

If you know you’ll be staying in Cambodia for longer than 60 days, don’t get a tourist visa. A renewable Cambodia Ordinary visa (E-class), also known as a Cambodia Business visa is a better option. This single entry Cambodia E-visa on arrival costs $35 (£27.50) and is again valid for 30 days, after which you can extend it.

Cambodia Visa on Arrival Requirements

To get a Cambodia visa on arrival you will need:

  • A passport that is valid for six months or more.
  • Two empty pages in your passport.
  • A completed Cambodia visa application form; supplied on the plane, or, at the airport or land border crossing.
  • The visa fee mentioned above must be in US dollars.

Cambodia Visa on Arrival Process

Cambodia Visa on Arrival in a passport

The process for getting a Cambodia visa on arrival before heading off to your hotel, hostel or guesthouse couldn’t be simpler. You just need to hand the immigration staff your completed Cambodia visa on arrival form, passport and Cambodia visa fee. They’ll process your application in about five to ten minutes whilst you wait, then give your passport back. It will have the visa inside and you’ll be good to go.

CamboTicket

If you’re planning on staying for longer than two months be sure to double check your you’ve been given the correct visa. An Ordinary (E-Class) visa should have an eight-digit number preceded by ‘EI’ on the left of the visa.

Overstaying Your Cambodia Visa

There is a $10 (£7.80) per day charge if you overstay your Cambodia visa, which you’ll have to pay when you leave the country, you may also be charged for a visa extension, but this doesn’t always happen.

It is permitted to overstay for up to 30 days; if you overstay for longer you’ll not only be liable for the daily overstay charge, but you could also possibly be imprisoned, deported or face a ban on future travel to Cambodia.

Cambodia Visa Extensions and Work Permits

Tourist (T-Class) visas can be extended for one month without leaving the country, for subsequent renewals, you have to leave Cambodia and return in order to renew it.

Ordinary (E-Class) visas can be extended for 1, 3, 6, or 12 months by getting one of the new set of four E-class visas introduced in 2017. The 1 and 3-month extensions are single entry and the 6 and 12-month extensions are multiple entry .

Since September 4th 2017 the laws on long-term visa extensions have changed and work permits are now needed to renew the 6-month and 12-month Ordinary (E-Class) visas. The 1 and 3-month (single entry) extensions can, however, still be extended indefinitely. The Business2Business Cambodia website has more information on getting a long-term extension for a Cambodia Visa . They also have details on how to get work permits.

Have you gotten your Cambodia visa differently to ‘on arrival’, maybe online or in advance? Tell us about it in the comments.

cambodia visa cruise ship

Nice Information.

cambodia visa cruise ship

I am on a cruise visiting one city (Sihanoukville). I believe I (U.S. citizen) need a visa, but it sounds like I cannot get an evisa as we won’t be arriving at one of the places where it is accepted. I’m wondering what options are available to get a non-evisa document to be able to cruise. I imagine the cruise line will not let me embark without an appropriate visa.

EVisas are only available if you arrive into Siem Reap or Phnom Penh international airports. So yes you are correct you can’t get an evisa if arriving into a seaport.

However, usually, the cruise company will take care of your visa application, so I would speak to them in the first instance.

If they do not arrange it for you – you have the following options:

Cambodia Visa on Arrival: Cruise ship passengers can get a visa-on-arrival at Cambodian seaports. This should be the same Visa on Arrival process as in my post

Cambodia Transit Visa (D): IThe short-term transit visa (D category) is available to tourists visiting the country on a cruise ship. It allows you to stay in the country for up to 96 hours. You can apply for this visa through a consulate or authorized travel agencies. (I assume your Cruise company)

I hope this helps

Thanks Tanya

I am in the same boat (pun intended), is there a way to get a VOA in advance to avoid any complications with the cruise company when boarding the ship?

As far as I know no, the e-Visa in Ruth’s comment above and my reply is the ‘online in advance’ visa on arrival which you cannot get in advance if arriving into a Seaport.

So you’d need to use one of the other options I mentioned in my reply to Ruth.

Great stuff, I move to work and live with a friend on one of the Koh Ring Islands end of august and this article was far more helpful than the other pages I’ve been trawling through.

Thanks Martin

Glad it was helpful, please do let me know if anything has changed in the Visa process so I can update my post. Have an amazing time living and working on Koh Rong 🙂

thank you so much for this great article! very helpful indeed and highly appreciated! is there any other document you need or requirement to fulfill in order to be able to get the “ordinary” e-visa on arrival?

Hi, glad you found it helpful. All the requirements are in the article, there shouldn’t be anything additional that you need.

Hope you enjoy Cambodia.

cambodia visa cruise ship

Hi, I’m only making a transfer in Cambodia. Will I need a visa?

You’ll only need a visa if you’re going through immigration and leaving the airport. If you’re just transiting through the airport you should not need a visa.

cambodia visa cruise ship

If I apply for visa extension the next day or a few days after arriving will the new visa validity start counting from the moment they give it to me or after the ordinary visa 30 days have passed? Thank you

After the original visa expires!

cambodia visa cruise ship

Are there any other costs? I was going to do Evisa but the cost is $109, do you know why there is such a cost variation?

No they are the only costs. Evisa will always cost much more as they will add on a fee for doing it for you. There’s absolutely no need to do it that way as it’s completely straight forward to just get a visa on arrival!

All you need to know about getting a visa to Cambodia

Mar 22, 2022 • 4 min read

Most visitors to Cambodia will need to apply for an e-visa before their trip © Grant Faint / Getty Images

Cambodia is currently one of the most open and visitor-friendly countries in Southeast Asia following COVID-19 travel restrictions.

As of 17 March 2022, visa-on-arrival has been reinstated for most visitors and all COVID-19 travel-related testing requirements have been lifted.

Do I need a visa to visit Cambodia?

The simple answer is yes: most nationalities need a visa to enter the Kingdom of Cambodia, including citizens of Australia, the European Union, the UK and the US. The main exceptions are citizens from the Association of Southeast Asian (ASEAN) neighbors who are granted visa-free access; these countries include Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam. Some other Asian nationalities, including Japan and South Korea, may also enter Cambodia without a visa in most circumstances. Citizens of Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka and Sudan need to make advance arrangements for a Cambodian visa.

A 1-month tourist visa costs US$30; easily extendable business visas cost US$35. Online tourist e-visas cost US$36, which includes a US$6 processing charge.

Do I need a photograph?

Photos are no longer required with visas for those arriving at airports, although some land crossings still require them and charge US$2–3 if you do not have one.

What about visas during the time of COVID-19?

Cambodia suspended its visa-on-arrival program in June 2020 but made the bold decision to reinstate it with immediate effect from 17 March 2022. It is also possible to apply for a Cambodian e-visa online .

It is also possible to apply for longer-stay visas at Cambodian embassies around the world .

What you need to know when for applying for a Cambodian visa

  • Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your planned entry or you won’t be allowed to enter the country.
  • Cambodian visas take up an entire passport page – unless you are entering on a tourist e-visa, which takes up about a quarter-page.

A crowded shopping street filled with scooter drivers and tuk-tuks in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Are there any special entry requirements related to COVID-19?

Cambodia blew the doors off quarantined Southeast Asia on November 15, 2021, when the government announced an unexpected total reopening for fully vaccinated travelers. Some pre-departure and arrival testing remained in place until recently but the requirement for COVID-19 travel testing was lifted in a bold move towards normality from March 2022. Visitors are free to travel anywhere in Cambodia without the need to quarantine and there are no curfews in place anywhere in the country.

Unvaccinated travelers are still required to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival in a pre-booked hotel or a designated government facility.

Can I extend my Cambodian visa?

Those seeking work in Cambodia should opt for a business visa, as it is easily extendable for longer periods, including multiple entries and exits. A tourist visa can be extended only once and only for 1 month and does not allow for re-entry. Overstaying a visa currently costs US$10 a day.

Visa extensions are issued at the large immigration office located directly across the road from Phnom Penh International Airport. Extensions are easy to arrange, taking just a couple of days. The cost is US$45 for 1 month (for both tourist and business visas), US$75 for 3 months, US$155 for 6 months and US$285 for 1 year. Some hotels and travel agents in Phnom Penh can help with arrangements for a small fee.

Where can I enter Cambodia?

Cambodia has three international gateways for arrival by air – Phnom Penh , Siem Reap and Sihanoukville – and a large number of land borders with neighboring Thailand, Vietnam and Laos. Formalities at Cambodia’s international airports are generally smooth.

Crossing at land borders is usually easy as well, though immigration officers may try to extract some extra cash, either for the visa itself or via some other scam. Crossing from Thailand, immigration officials may demand payment in baht and round up the exchange rate considerably in their favor. Overcharging is also an issue at the Laos border, but not usually a problem at Vietnam borders. Arranging an e-visa in advance can help avoid any hassles or surcharges.

Departure from Cambodia during COVID-19

You do not need a PCR test to leave Cambodia, though you should check whether a “Fit-to-Fly” PCR test or rapid antigen is required for your onward stop, whether a stay in another country, transit through another country or return to your home country.

There are currently COVID-19 testing labs in several cities around Cambodia, including multiple testing labs in Phnom Penh, one lab in Siem Reap, one lab in Sihanoukville and one lab in Battambang . In practice, it is easiest to work with the labs in Phnom Penh or Siem Reap, so we recommend making one of these cities your departure destination from Cambodia if a Fit-to-Fly certificate is required.

Hello Heather H

But once in Cambodia waters/port your shipping line will charge you the cost of a Cambodia visa at their own inflated price regardless of whether you stay on board or go ashore. Personally, I would stay on board.

Your question is an FAQ and there is a long thread on this topic.

Best regards. Ian/Angkorlad

Hello again Heather H

Here is an extract from the comprehensive - Visa on Arrival and Passport Requirements posting -

Also, you should expect the ship to charge you more than that applicable for a visa at all Cambodian International Border Crossings because they profit from this in most cases.

Cambodia Issues Short-Term Transit Visas to Tourists Visiting Cambodia by Cruise Ship

The Royal Government of Cambodia has announced that it will offer short-term transit visas to tourists visiting the country on a cruise ship. The new policy, effective from 1 March 2023, allows international tourists to apply for a transit visa type D for a five-day stay.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, transit visas (D) are issued to non-immigrant foreigners who are transit passengers, drivers, staff, employees, and active personnel on vehicles, trains, ships, or planes. The visa was issued by a Sub Decree on 10 June 2016, on “Procedures to allow Non-Immigrant Foreigners to Enter, Leave and Reside in the Kingdom of Cambodia”.

The announcement of the short-term visa comes after a surge in foreign tourists visiting Cambodia by water, particularly to Sihanoukville by ship, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 29 December 2022, at least seven cruise ships carrying 3,133 passengers have docked at the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port.

Cambodia’s Minister of Tourism, HE Thong Khon, stated that the country received around 400,000 international tourists in January 2023, with about 5,000 arriving by water, particularly by colossal cruise ships. This marks an increase of 1,283% compared to the same month in 2022.

The Cambodian government has been taking steps to encourage foreign visitors to the country to aid in tourism recovery following the pandemic. From 1 September 2022, the government allowed long-term foreign residents to apply for a visit to the Angkor and Koh Ker temples complex once a year, free of charge.

The new short-term transit visa policy is expected to promote tourism in Cambodia further and make it easier for cruise ship passengers to explore the country during their travels.

Need visas for Cambodia and Vietnam?

Will I need a visa for each of theses countries or will being a ship's passenger and my valid passport suffice? I am going on the Diamond Princess in February, 2009.

US citizen-yes.

The ship has visa's for Vietnam. You will have to get a Cambodia visa at the border. IF you are on a cruise that actually stops in Cambodia, the ship MAY arrange a group visa. You will have to call Princess for that info. DO NOT use Princess visa service-Zierer. They have not a clue when it comes to Asia.

  • 4 weeks later...

She seemed quite knowledgable and confirmed what greatam said - that Princess does provide the visas for Vietnam and that a $7.00 charge would be applied to each passenger's onboard account.

Visas for Cambodia must be obtained by each passenger through the Cambodian embassy in their country. I have seen non-embassy visa processing services, but the service charges are quite steep, so hubby and I will probably just hand deliver ours to the Cambodian embassy in Washington, D. C.

I'd love to hear from others on this subject!

If you are flying into cambodia at the end of your cruise you can obtain a visa at the airport upon arrival. You will need to give them a passport photo, and it is a simple process. There is a new electronic system that will work at different ports that allow you to do this over the internet, you will find a link for this at the cambodian consulate website (use google). If your ship is porting there they do provide for group visas for the day they are there, but if you want other access get your own.

Tropic, I won't be flying in to a Cambodian airport. Are you saying that because my ship stops in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, the cruise line will provide a group visa? The Princess rep specifically said that each passenger has to procure their own Cambodian visa.

We are on the same cruise and and received the same info from Princess. - we get our own visa for Cambodia before sailing. I emailed the Cambodian Embassy and they said an Evisa that one can get ahead of time is not valid for our port in Cambodia - they did say one could get one at the port but quite undestand Princess saying we need to get one ahead of time. (2000 plus passengers in a line up for a visa !!)The Washington embassy handles visas for all of N.America.

I got an e-mail from the Cambodian Embassy today confirming what you have said.

Since I live about 2 hours from Washington, D. C., hubby and I are going to go up on a Sunday, do a couple of museums, have dinner, stay in a nice hotel and then go to the embassy first thing on Monday morning to drop our documents off. We'll probably go sometime after Christmas, checking to make sure the embassy will be open on the following Monday, of course!

Let's cross our fingers about the visas. At least we know what to do now.

Interesting... we are going to the same port on R/C Legend of the Seas and they are providing for "visas" for both Vietnam and Cambodia on board ship. However, if you plan to return after the cruise to either country you would need a multi entry visa to be safe. It is kind of confusing and I don't think the cruise lines give adequate information to how to handle this issue. But with both Cambodia and Vietnam it is quite easy to get visa's on your own and not have to add the cost of a "service" to the whole process. By the way evisa is not yet available at Shianoukville (sp?) as you found out, so you need the go the traditional route. Have a great time at both of these countries. Amazing people by the way.

I sure wouldn't count on getting a group visa from the ship for Cambodia. They are just not technologically sophisticated enough to pull it off. The new "e Visa" has left many a backpacker scrambling to get a visa because something glitched out. Almost a riot in Phnom Penh when 35 backpackers were sent back to the Vietnam border crossing from the "fast boat" because they "thought" they had e visa's. The visa's had never been validated. Who you going to argue with???-a Cambodian Army officer (those are the border guards and visa checkers) or go back and get your visa straightened out. Discretion is DEFINIETLY the better part of valor.

The cruise lines are NOT in the visa business and the reps OFTEN give erroneous info. For my own piece of mind, I would get a Cambodian visa BEFORE I got to Cambodia. I get mine at the airports which is easy. But on a cruise ship, with 3rd world, very backwards technology, I sure wouldn't count on a group visa. Would be nice if it happened and probably save you a few dollars (Cambodia visa's are $25.00). But would really be a rude awakening if you were not allowed to board the ship or get off in Cambodia for lack of a visa.

I think it is always best to err on the side of caution even if it costs a few bucks to do so.

I, too, think the cruise lines need to be better informed on these issus so that their employees can impart the correct info to the passengers. I'll mention that on my next cruise questionaire.

Are you saying do not get a e-visa for Cambodia? We are visiting Cambodia after our cruise and were going to apply for an e-visa. We are going overland from Bangkok to Siam Reap.

Great Am,   Are you saying do not get a e-visa for Cambodia? We are visiting Cambodia after our cruise and were going to apply for an e-visa. We are going overland from Bangkok to Siam Reap.

I am saying that there have been "unvalidated" e-visa's through the online service. In fact, take a look at the official web page. http://evisa.mfaic.gov.kh/e-visa/vindex.aspx

Cambodian officials are aware of the problem-they are just having a hard time getting it fixed. You will note in #1 that you can check the validity of your e-visa. However, you will have already paid for your e-visa by the time you can check the validity. And if it is no good, it could be a real nightmare to straighten out. I personally would get a Cambodian visa either at the airport or in advance through the Embassy.

You do realize that the overland trip is NOT for most. Getting from Bangkok to Aranyapathet is easy-there are MANY buses, private taxis and other transport. But Aranyapathet is 6km from the Thai border, so you have to negotiate with a tuk-tuk or moto driver to get you to the border. When you arrive at the border, you are in one the nastiest places you could be. Smugglers, gun runners, scammers and thieves all over the place. DON'T get TAKEN. The border is only open from 7:30-17:30, so DON'T get caught having to spend the night at the border.

Then you pass Thai immigration, then Cambodian immigration. You can buy a visa at the border. You MUST have photos. And there have been recent reports-one from one of my contractors who is Australian, but lives in Phnom Penh, that the border guards have come up with a new scheme-REQUIRING international vaccination cards with YF. While quite a few SE Asia countries are now asking sporadically for YF vaccination proof (due to the well publicized YF outbreak in SA), most will just turn you away if you don't have it. But Cambodia will let you pass without it for a FEE-another negotiating process.

When you finally get your Cambodian visa (if you didn't have one in advance), you now get to negotiate with the "taxi mafia" or find a pick up truck to take you to Siem Reap. The road is in better shape than it has been, BUT it is still subject to washouts. It is about 150km to Siem Reap and can easily take 5-10 hours. When you get to Siem Reap, the amount of touts grabbing at your luggage and trying to get you to go to "their" hotel is more than I have seen anyplace else in Cambodia. You BETTER have a car and driver waiting for you. Even though I travel to Cambodia frequently, I WOULD NOT want to try to negotiate that mess.

While I have done the overland trip with a group of 20 something backpackers (and rode from Poipet to Siem Reap in the bed of a pickup truck), I would only do it again in the company of a group of backpackers. There truly is safety in numbers. And DON'T believe the travel agents on Khao San Road in Bangkok that they will "take care of everything". Most of the time, they lie. They will get you to Aranyapathet, then you are on your own.

Here are a couple of tips from a blog written by an Australian that crosses the border frequently:

"Travel to Siemreap from Poipet is more or less a rough and adventurous trail, not suitable for those who seek comfort. On the Cambodian side, there are share taxi or pickup trucks that will ride you to Siem Reap where the impressive Angkor Wat and other Khmer temples are housed. The road condition is very poor, dusty, unpaved, and even worst in rainy season when the road becomes muddy with a lot of potholes. In some instances, local military guards may block the road to ask for illegitimate passing fees from travelers. If you are lucky, it takes around 10-12 hours for 150 km journey with an opportunity to cross some of the most exciting (dangerous) bridges that you never experience before. The transport fee one-way to Siemreap from Poipet starts from 100 Baht up."

And a little bit about safety and corruption in Cambodia from the same blog. I have spent the last 2.5 years trying to buy and renovate an old apt building into a hotel in Phnom Penh-there is almost as much "mordida" in Cambodia as there is in Mexico. Seems like every time I turned around, there was another "fee".

"Safety? - Though there are many instances of travelers being rip-off by the locals in the area, it may be UNAVOIDABLE. Anyhow, most of them are at a bearable cost. Practice your bargaining skill is the only advice! Recently there is no report on travelers being physically harm or endangered, so it is likely to be at individual risk."

Unless you are REALLY into backpacking (or are a 20 something), I would highly recommend getting on a plane in Bangkok to Siem Reap. Bangkok Airways is a VERY nice airline.

Check the Cambodia embassy on the internet. The visa is $20 and is very easy to get buty ou must have one to get into Cambodia. we are doing a Princess tour after our cruise in November and were informed on our itenerary that a visa for Cambodia is required. I had investigated the e-visa but when I read the website i would not take the risk. it would be shame to get there and be denied entry becuse you do not have a visa

Actually the Cambodian Immigration office has recently set up a new eVisa system. Now you can apply for visa online and then receive a document that you simply need to print and show when you travel to Cambodia. Pretty convenient. More details here: visa-travel-to-cambodia

But having said that most cruise lines organise the visas for Cambodia and Vietnam once on board and charge passengers accordingly.

I asked on various forums, but seem that there are no South Africans that can answer this!

I asked Costa and they confirmed yesterday, via e-mail. that the ship will take care of this visa at a cost of USD 40 per passport.

Who are you sailing with?

Thank you post #7. Apologies, new here not familiar with the rules yet.

Post 7...thanks for the info. We will also be travelling on Costa Fortuna at the same time. For Australians, it generally costs $35 USD for a 30 day visa to Cambodia anyway so glad the shipping company won't be charging us too much more. On top of the daily service charge my bank balance will be looking pretty sick by the end of it all. See you on board!

Inbound tourism drive sparks optimistic outlook.

Last month, senior tour operator Iain Bell traveled from the United Kingdom to China at the invitation of Beijing tourism authorities to sample the capital city's cultural and historical charms.

The three-day trip was one of a large number of undertakings by central and local authorities to attract international visitors and promote the country's myriad attractions.

During his stay, Bell marveled at the grandeur of the Badaling section of the Great Wall, the Palace Museum's ancient complex and precious cultural relics, and the unique charm of the royal garden at the Summer Palace.

Bell said he was particularly impressed by his interactions with a tai chi master at the Temple of Heaven and the "magic" of the traditional Chinese martial art.

"It was so different from my understanding of the country," Bell said, adding that he found China vibrant and was impressed by the country's internal and external harmony.

The Brit also said he greatly admired Beijing's clean and orderly urban environment, adding that what touched him most was the warmth and friendliness of ordinary Chinese people he met in streets and alleys or at famous historical sites.

"It was a very rewarding trip, and I gained a new understanding and deep appreciation of Chinese culture," he said.
