- South Australian Premier Steven Marshall commenting on the region: "Spectators can not only enjoy some elite cycling action but can also experience everything the Barossa has to offer – from the region’s quality produce to world-class wineries only a stone’s throw away from the racing.  The Barossa region is a popular destination for domestic and international travellers, helping to put South Australia on the map. It’s great to be able to have the cycling go straight through here so visitors can make the most of their time in this fantastic part of the state."

- Mike Turtur, Race Director: "The design of our race is a unique feature of the event and this year we have three days for both the sprinters and the all-rounders.  We’re going back to Paracombe and will climb Willunga Hill again for the finale in Be Safe Be Seen Stage 6 but also have a fast race set for today in the Barossa and we’ll challenge the peloton with a return to Stirling.  We recognise that circuit racing gives people the opportunity to see the race multiple times and really does allow the full colour of the race to be presented to spectators. The riders like them too because they can familiarise themselves with the circuit and the climbs, and it reduces the danger of corners because they do them multiple times."

- Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) won the 2020 Men's Tour Down Under Schwalbe Classic.  Said Ewan post-race: "I started this season, I think, with a bit of pressure to replicate what I did last year or try to grow my wins on top of that. This is my first race of the season, usually, I’ve done some races before but I felt really good out there. I was pretty relaxed for the first half sitting down the back and then when I needed to go, I got up into position and that was it.

- Simona Frapporti (BePink) won Stage 4.  Ruth Winder (Trek-Segafredo) wins the 2020 Women's Tour Down Under.  Frapporti following her stage win said: "It’s always nice to win on the first stage race of the year. Coming from Italy, we were behind the locals in terms of condition but I was feeling very well today. So I took my chance. I’m sure my two brothers [Marco and Mattia Frapporti] who are professional cyclists too will be happy to hear that I’m a winner today. It’s important to start an Olympic year with a victory. It’s perfect for the confidence."

- Ruth Winder following her overall victory in the 2020 Women's TDU: "It feels pretty crazy to win the Santos Tour Down Under. Team Sunweb and Mitchelton-SCOTT really put us under pressure. I’m really happy to pull it off. I’m still really excited after the stage I won yesterday. It’s such an incredible feeling. It’s not a single person’s sport. For every win, you need a strong team. I wish my team-mates could accompany me on the podium."

- Ruth Winder (Trek-Segafredo) won Stage 3 and took over the lead on G.C.  Winder had this to say after the stage: "My teammate Tayler Wiles, she was just leading me out perfectly. I was talking to her the whole time, we’ve been teammates for years and she’s helped me with so many wins, so every time I do I feel so grateful for her in the last 500 metres. The whole team the entire race was really active at the front covering things, making sure I was really safe until the circuits, which were pretty hard with Mitchelton-SCOTT destroying it on the times pretty much."

- Amanda Spratt (Mitchelton-Scott) won Stage 2 and is new overall leader.  Spratt post-stage: "Very, very, very excited. We had a solid team plan today, we knew it could be really hard in the final if we made it that way, and that’s exactly what we did. The girls did it perfectly into the climb, Lucy [Kennedy] did her job in the climb and split it into a group of five – we had three and five – and then we knew we just had to make it hard after that. I’m really excited that I could win that sprint in the end. After a great team effort it’s the best way to win."

- Chloe Hosking (Rally Cycling) won Stage 1 of the women's race and is first leader in the general classification.  Said Hosking post-stage: "I am just so proud of the girls, it's our first race all together but you wouldn't know it on the road. They were always there, when there was trouble in the wind they were rolling, and they did exactly what we planned in the finish which was just to keep the speed high and keep me out of trouble...we committed to our plan and we executed it."

Route announced for 25th edition of Tour Down Under, new twists for Willunga Hill

T he Santos Tour Down Under route will feature some old favourites as well as new additions in 2025, as the South Australian race celebrates the 25th running of the event which started in 1999.

The racing will start with the Women's WorldTour opener, which sets off from Brighton and heads toward a likely sprint finish in Aldinga on Friday January 17 and then on Saturday moves into a stage which finishes at the top of Willunga Hill , the iconic climb which crowned the winner in 2024 .

“We saw incredible vulnerability and emotion in so many of the athletes this year, in particular Sarah Gigante as she won up Willunga Hill – a climb that we will see women tackle twice for the first time in 2025,” race director Stuart O'Grady said in a statement.

The women's Tour Down Under will then conclude on an undulating stage through Stirling which, if the overall battle is tight after Willunga, could still provide an opportunity for some GC reshuffling.

The attention then turns to the men's WorldTour race, although spectators will have already had a taste of the action with the Down Under Classic criterium on the evening of Saturday January 18.

“We’ve designed the routes to both challenge the riders and give fans the best possible opportunities to enjoy all the racing action up close,” O'Grady said in a statement.

“Some of the exciting new elements in the men’s race will see them ride down the face of Willunga for the first time followed by two ascensions and a brand-new climb up Knotts Hill, Pound Road. Smart team tactics will be crucial for success in this edition of the Santos Tour Down Under.”

Stage 1 on Tuesday January 21 from Prospect, will deliver the first of two stages that provide an opportunity for the sprinters before the new Pound Road climb is likely to open up the GC battle on stage 3. After stage 4 to Victor Harbor, stage 5 will likely decide the overall with its descent and two ascents of Willunga Hill.

The final offering, one for the sprinters, pays homage to the race history as it finishes off the men's Tour Down Under on Sunday January 26 on a city circuit in Adelaide. This was a stage which in the first edition of the race 1999 was expected to draw a crowd of 15,000 though ultimately 40,000 packed the streets.

In the intervening years, with 24 editions of the event and two years of a COVID-19 hiatus, the race has grown – with the introduction of the women's event – and crowds have grown even further. South Australia also released an analysis of this year's event as they released the course for 2025.

“The economic benefits this iconic race has brought to the state across its 25 years is outstanding," said the state's Minister for Tourism Zoe Bettison. "This year’s race injected more than $87 million into our state’s economy, attracting a total attendance of 770,600 while showcasing South Australia’s regions to millions more around the world through the broadcast.”

Tour Down Under 2023: Seven contenders to watch out for

Multiple big names from the men's and women's WorldTour will be beginning the new season in the coming days

  • Sign up to our newsletter Newsletter

Ben O'Connor

After a two-year Covid inflicted absence, the Tour Down Under makes its return to the men's WorldTour calendar this season. The women's Tour Down Under is also back on and for the first time ever will be included in the women's WorldTour. Some of the biggest names in the sport will be beginning their 2023 campaigns in the coming days in Australia. The week of racing in Adelaide will begin with a short criterium on Saturday 14 January. While it may not count towards the general classification in either race, it's bound to be a thrilling affair. The women's race then begins on Sunday and the men's will kick off on Tuesday 17 January with a short 5.5 kilometre prologue. Here are seven riders we think could look to start their seasons as they mean to go on next week.

LUKE PLAPP

Luke Plapp

The newly crowned Australian national road champion will certainly be one to watch. As one of Australia’s biggest up and coming names, Plapp may well materialise as being Ineos’ elected leader for the Tour down Under, particularly if Ethan Hayter and Geraint Thomas are still some way off form.

Plapp is a respectable climber, and strong on the other types of terrain. He will be able to rely upon the experience of the likes of Ben Swift, as well as the youthful effervescence provided by the likes of Hayter and Magnus Sheffield if he gets the nod to go for the win from the Ineos management.

BEN O'CONNOR

Ben O'Connor

O’Connor is another homegrown hope for the Australian fans, and has slightly more experience and GC know-how compared to his fellow Aussie Plapp.

On his day, the AG2R man is undoubtedly one of the best climbers on the men’s WorldTour and has stage wins at both the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia to his name. O’Connor comes into the race as his French team's leader and possesses all the talents to make a difference on the hillier stages this year.

Keep an eye out for the 27-year-old in the sharp end of the action on stage five to Mount Lofty where he will almost certainly be in contention for a win.

GRACE BROWN

Grace Brown at the Tour de France Femmes

Home favourite Grace Brown will be looking to start the 2023 season as she means to go on when racing gets underway on Sunday.

Get The Leadout Newsletter

The latest race content, interviews, features, reviews and expert buying guides, direct to your inbox!

Brown recently finished second to Brodie Chapman in the women’s road race at the Australian national championships, putting her in good stead for when the Tour down Under gets going. The 30-year-old had a highly respectable 2022 which saw her secure second overall at the Women’s Tour as well as a stage win at the Ceratizit Challenge by La Vuelta.

In 2022, she was millimetres away from a major stage race victory. Where better to go one step further than on the roads of the women’s Tour down Under?

Jay Vine at the Vuelta Espana 2022

A new signing for UAE Team Emirates ahead of the 2023 season, Jay Vine arrives at his home race as a solid favourite for the victory.

Last season Vine exploded into the limelight in dramatic style, grabbing two stage wins at the Vuelta a España . Both coming on mountain top finishes, Vine made a name for himself as one of the best climbers at the race alongside the likes of then of Ineos Grenadiers , Richard Carapaz.

Possessing a fast turn of speed when the road goes uphill, Vine will be a huge favourite to go on the attack on the hilly stages three and five as he looks to go all in for the victory.

ALBERTO BETTIOL

Alberto Bettiol

The former Tour of Flanders winner, Alberto Bettiol, arrives in Australia as one of the bigger names in his EF Education-EasyPost team.

Bettiol will be able to call on more than capable allies in the shape of new EF signing Mikkel Honore, and German Jonas Rutsch as he looks to ride well and place highly on the general classification. The Italian is a powerful and explosive puncheur who will favour the short, sharp climbs on offer in Australia.

Given the Tour down Under’s place in the calendar, many of the more prestigious names may be taking a back seat as they look to build form for later in the year. If that turns out to be the case, Bettiol may well use his explosiveness to capitalise and secure the victory.

GEORGE BENNETT

George Bennett

Kiwi Bennett is one of two riders on UAE Team Emirates that could threaten the top half of the GC in Australia.

After a lengthy spell with Dutch powerhouse Team Jumbo-Visma earlier in his career, the 32-year-old Bennett possesses all the attributes and experience needed to launch a bid at victory in any week-long stage race scenario.

The Kiwi is aggressive and can climb well and also has the advantage of already passing the off-season in the southern hemisphere, removing the need to acclimatise to the action. Not only that, Bennett can also benefit from freedom from racing with home nation expectations this month.

GEORGIA BAKER

Georgia Baker

The women’s 2022 Commonwealth Games road race champion, Georgia Baker will be out to impress as another home favourite for Australia. Particularly in the colours of home-based team Jayco-AIUla.

A formidable rider on both the road and track, Baker is a powerful athlete capable of stamping her authority on any race from day one. While she may not possess the same climbing ability as her fellow Australian Brown, the shorter, punchier climbs on offer at the Tour down Under shouldn’t provide Baker with too many problems.

If out and out favourite Brown slips up, Baker will certainly be a rider capable of capitalising.

What people are saying

“Great tour. Awesome tour guide and tour group. Amazing places. Breathtaking waterfalls. Beautiful scenery. Heaps of fun. Options to suit various needs / fitness/ abilities. We were extremely well looked after by Evan our tour guide who gave us interesting and entertaining commentary and lots of opportunities to experience the beauty and wonder of Tasmania’s natural landscape, wilderness and wildlife. “

“ Thank you for a breathtakingly wonderful Famous Five Tour. Tom (guide) is such a great guide combining a passion for all things Tasmanian, a love of nature, and brilliant people skills. He shared his knowledge in such a generous way. The scenery was stunning, the drive very comfortable, the Motels really good, and the perfect size group. Tom wisely advised us to lookout for each other and helped us become a great team. I’m just sorry it’s over. Thank you for great communication throughout. “

“Our 10 day tour has been fantastic. Justin (guide) was forever cheerful and went out of his way to accommodate our preferences. It’s so unusual to have a guide who can let the itinerary ebb and flow a bit (but still seem to get where we need to be when we need to be there). And Tassie itself is amazing. Just beautiful. I loved this holiday and I’m so sorry it’s finished. “

Nick Dunlap opens Rocket Mortgage Classic in 5-under, continues adjustment to life on TOUR

Change Text Size

Nick Dunlap's introduction to the PGA TOUR was enthralling. The 20-year-old, then amateur, captivated pro golf with a stunning breakthrough at The American Express, shooting a third-round 60 and outlasting Sam Burns and Christiaan Bezuidenhout on Sunday to become the first amateur to win on TOUR in more than 30 years.

His encore has been … a work in progress.

Since the victory in January, Dunlap has had an up-and-down experience adjusting to life on the TOUR. He’s enjoyed a few tournaments in contention. A T11 at the Texas Children’s Houston Open and a T12 at the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday were further flashes of that potential he showed at PGA West. But it’s been interspersed with bouts of inconsistency. He’s missed the cut in all three majors and THE PLAYERS Championship and sits 93rd in the FedExCup standings, currently outside of the FedExCup Playoffs.

Perhaps Dunlap’s strong start to the Rocket Mortgage Classic can provide a late-season spark. Dunlap shot 5-under 67 on Thursday, tying his best first-round in relation to par since The American Express.

Nick Dunlap's interview after Round 1 of Rocket Mortgage

Teeing off on the back nine of Detroit Golf Club, Dunlap began his round with a 3-under 33 before making the turn. Once he reached the first hole, his tenth of the day, Dunlap caught fire and carded four straight birdies. Several dialed iron shots saw him climb the leaderboard. He hit all four approaches within 15 feet and holed the putts for birdie. A double bogey on the par-3 fifth hole and a bogey on the sixth slowed him down, encapsulating Dunlap’s topsy-turvy season within a nine-hole stretch. Fortunately, Dunlap converted a bounceback birdie on his penultimate hole, the eighth, to move into a tie for second, one behind the lead through the morning wave.

With an eye toward the remaining rounds, Dunlap spoke to the media and summarized his play. “I drove it great, ironed it nicely,” he said. “Clean up on some speed work around the greens, but overall very, very impressed with the way I kind of navigated around today.”

Off the course, Dunlap continues to learn what it means to be a professional golfer. After the first round of the Memorial earlier this month, he told the media, “When you're out here playing three, four weeks in a row, you have to figure out, all right, I'm going to work out these days so I'm not sore, but I'm on the road four weeks, so I got to find a little bit of time to keep my game sharp and learn the golf course as best you can week-to-week.”

It’s an understandable adjustment for a golfer who expected to be preparing for his title defense at the U.S. Amateur rather than pushing for a spot in the FedExCup Playoffs.

After his win at The American Express, Dunlap spoke about his professional golf dreams. Humbly, he said he wouldn’t take for granted this breakthrough victory, and he knew “It may never happen again.”

With three rounds remaining in Detroit, Dunlap will do his best to repeat the past that launched his career. He’s currently projected just outside the top 70 of the FedExCup (73rd, through the morning wave Thursday). If he can climb just a bit higher, it would mark a tremendous success in his rookie campaign.

We learned much about Dunlap in his triumphant victory at The American Express. We will learn even more about the young man from Huntsville, Alabama, as he stands up against several TOUR winners over the next three days in Detroit.

Rivalries, crashes and meltdowns: Tour de France storylines to watch

tour de france

Imagine speeding down a winding mountain road going 60 mph, protected by little more than carbon, spandex and a helmet, surrounded by nearly 200 competitors as thousands of stunned onlookers shout and jeer.

Now, imagine doing that for six hours a day for three weeks, with just two rest days to gather enough strength and wits to keep going.

Welcome to the Tour de France, the most elite bicycle race in the world and perhaps the most grueling endurance challenge undertaken by professional athletes.

For the first time in the race’s 111-year history, the Tour de France will begin in Italy and end somewhere other than in Paris, which is hosting the Summer Olympics . Cyclists will traverse nearly 2,200 miles of stunning European landscapes, departing from Florence on Saturday and snaking up to the Pyrenees Mountains, through the Alps and down to the Mediterranean Sea. It will conclude in Nice on July 21.

It’s no secret that while the Tour de France draws tens of millions of viewers worldwide every year, American audiences have largely overlooked professional cycling after Lance Armstrong’s very public professional demise.

In 2012, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency accused Armstrong’s seemingly untouchable team of running “the most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program that sport has ever seen.”

Armstrong, who won seven Tours after having cancer, vehemently denied the allegations for years until he confessed in a 2013 interview with Oprah Winfrey. His downfall culminated when the Union Cycliste Internationale, professional cycling’s governing body, stripped him of all seven Tour de France victories.

After years of disinterest, American viewership may be on the rebound, thanks, in part, to the release of “Unchained,” a Netflix show by the production team behind the blockbuster “Drive to Survive” docuseries, which focuses on Formula 1 racing. “Unchained” goes behind the scenes of cycling’s biggest rivalries, capturing in vivid detail the commitment, sacrifice and zeal needed to conquer the Tour de France. Think violent crashes, uncontrollable sobbing and inter-team mudslinging.

With so much drama surrounding professional cycling’s biggest race, here are a few storylines to watch in the coming Tour de France.

Jonas v. Tadej

This year’s biggest showdown will be a tiebreaker for the ages. Jonas Vingegaard, the Danish superpower leading team Visma-Lease a Bike, will return to defend the yellow jersey after he won the Tour de France in 2022 and last year. But Tadej Pogačar, a Slovenian wunderkind riding for UAE Team Emirates, has a score to settle. He took home the yellow jersey in 2020 and 2021, and this year he obliterated competitors in the spring classics and in Italy’s grand tour, the Giro d’Italia.

Vingegaard heads to Florence with a major disadvantage after he was hospitalized for nearly two weeks with a collapsed lung, a broken collarbone and broken ribs in April during the Tour of Basque Country. He spent much of the spring recovering from the horrific crash and training at altitude with teammate Wout Van Aert, who was injured in a separate crash.

Complicating matters is the recently announced departure of American cyclist Sepp Kuss from Visma’s Tour de France lineup. He shepherded team Visma to three grand tour victories last year. But Tuesday, Visma announced Kuss has Covid and won’t ride in the Tour.

Setting a Tour record

Will Mark Cavendish beat the record for most stage wins at the Tour de France? With 34 victories behind him, Cavendish, the Astana Qazaqstan Team sprinter, remains tied with the great Eddy Merckx. He planned to smash that record last year and retire from professional cycling, but he crashed out of the Tour before he achieved his dream. Now 39 years old, Cavendish will head to Florence with that one goal in mind.

But he has fierce competition by the name of Jasper Philipsen of team Alpecin-Deceuninck. Philipsen, of Belgium, emerged last year as the peloton’s top sprinter, winning four stages with the help of teammate Mathieu van der Poel, also known as the Flying Dutchman.

Combined, Philipsen and van der Poel are perhaps the most formidable pair and perhaps the most controversial. Philipsen’s aggressive tactics, including trying to block other riders, repeatedly came under question last year, triggering reviews by race officials and drawing criticism from viewers and pundits alike. Race officials ultimately ruled in favor of Philipsen, but his reputation had been sullied by the end of the Tour.

Evenepoel debut

Soudal Quick-Step’s Remco Evenepoel will chase a podium finish in his Tour de France debut. But at 24 years old, Evenepoel remains untested at the grand Tour, and he has suffered several setbacks in recent months.

Evenepoel, the two-time world champion from Belgium, broke his collarbone and a shoulder blade at the Tour of Basque Country in the crash that took out Vingegaard. He crashed again this month at the Critérium du Dauphiné. He quickly recovered and went on to conquer the time trial, but he ultimately lost the top spot to Slovenian cyclist Primož Roglič, who is also gunning for the yellow jersey at the Tour de France.

In his latest setback, Evenepoel was forced to bow out of the Belgian National Championships after he came down with a cold. He has less than a week to recover before he tackles the Tour de France.

Roglič vengeance

Whether Roglič can beat former teammate Vingegaard and win his first Tour de France will be one of the best storylines to watch.

Roglič, who rode on team Visma for five seasons, is no stranger to first place. He won the Vuelta a España three years in a row, from 2019 to 2021, and he took first at the Giro d’Italia last year. In 2020, he came in second at the Tour de France but lost to fellow Slovenian Pogačar.

Last year, Roglič sought a second win at the Vuelta a España, but he was pressured to back up his then-teammate Kuss. The unexpected change frustrated the already ornery Roglič, and soon afterward he announced he would leave Visma. Now with team BORA-hansgrohe, Roglič will face off against both Vingegaard and Pogačar at the Tour.

Doping problems

Professional cycling can’t seem to shake the shadow of doping more than a decade after Armstrong confessed to cheating.

Vingegaard’s jaw-dropping time trial last year, when he beat Pogačar by 98 seconds, set tongues wagging. His performance was almost too good, triggering rumblings inside and outside the peloton that he might have used performance-enhancing drugs. Vingegaard, who tested negative several times throughout the 2023 season, denied cheating and said he welcomed the tests to help prove his innocence.

This year, two cyclists have been disciplined for using prohibited substances. In May, Colombian cyclist Miguel Ángel López was banned for four years in an investigation led by Spanish authorities concerning a doctor who worked in the sport. The UCI anti-doping tribunal found him guilty of using and possessing menotropins, a female fertility drug that can stimulate production of testosterone in men.

Last week, Italian cyclist Andrea Piccolo was dropped by his team, EF Education-EasyPost, on suspicion of transporting human growth hormone. His dismissal was all the more shocking given that his team manager, Jonathan Vaughters, had confessed to doping during his tenure as a professional cyclist riding on Armstrong’s team.

Forget Prince William's dancing — Jason Kelce says Princess Charlotte was the highlight of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour

  • Jason and Travis Kelce discussed their recent attendance at the Eras Tour on their podcast.
  • They revealed that they both met the royal family at Friday's show in London.
  • Jason said Princess Charlotte was "the highlight" of the interaction.

Insider Today

Jason Kelce has a new favorite royal: Princess Charlotte.

Over the weekend, Taylor Swift continued her European leg of the Eras Tour with three shows at Wembley Stadium in London. The London Authority estimated that Swift's shows boosted the city's economy by about $379 million.

The weekend was filled with fun moments, including Swift bringing her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, who attended all three shows in London, onstage for a surprise appearance on Sunday.

The Friday and Saturday shows also marked Travis' brother and sister-in-law Jason and Kylie Kelce's first stops on Swift's Eras Tour.

The couple were just two of several celebrities who attended the London shows. At one of the performances, they met three of the most famous people to ever come to a Swift show: Prince William, Prince George, and Princess Charlotte.

Prince William brought his kids to the Eras Tour

William attended the concert on Friday with George, 10, and Charlotte, 9. Kate Middleton and Prince Louis, 6, did not join them.

In addition to watching the show from a private suite, the trio visited Swift and Travis backstage before she performed.

The Prince of Wales and Swift posted about their meetup on Instagram.

Swift's interactions with the Waleses bolstered positive attention for the royals, as did a video of Prince William dancing gleefully to "Shake It Off" during the concert.

The Kelce brothers shared new details of the meeting on Wednesday's episode of their podcast "New Heights," during which they revealed Jason and Kylie also met the royals.

Travis and Jason said they were impressed by the family.

Related stories

"They were an absolute delight to meet," Travis said on the podcast of the royals. "I wasn't sure if I was supposed to like bow to them, curtsy, just be an American idiot and shake their hands."

"They said because we weren't at like an official royal event, we didn't need to bow or curtsy," Jason said. "I did still address them as Your Royal Highness."

"I've never seen you give someone that much respect," Travis told Jason. "You put your beer like 10 feet away from them."

"They were wonderful people," Jason said, adding that they seemed "down to earth."

The brothers also said they were fans of William, with Jason saying he is "a good dude."

"He was the coolest motherfucker," Travis said of the heir to the British throne. "He was so cool."

Princess Charlotte left an impression

Jason said that meeting Princess Charlotte, who was grinning from ear to ear in her photos with Swift, was "the highlight" of his interaction with the royals.

"I gotta say, Prince William was fantastic, but the highlight was Princess Charlotte," Jason said. "Prince George was great, too."

"She was so fucking adorable," Jason went on to say of Charlotte. "Maybe it's because I have three girls now."

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Prince and Princess of Wales (@princeandprincessofwales)

Jason and Kylie have three daughters: Wyatt, 4, Elliotte, 3, and Bennett, 1.

"She was a superstar," Travis agreed of Charlotte.

"She had fire to her," Jason added of the princess. "She was asking questions. That was the most electric part."

Charlotte also stood out at Trooping the Colour on June 15, where she was spotted looking like the spitting image of her father .
