Located within the malaria-free Marakele National Park, Marataba Safari Lodge is set on the foothills of the Waterberg Mountains and offers guided game drives, bush walks or river excursions. Elegantly furnished, the canvas-and-stone tented rooms at the lodge boast a free-standing stone bath as well as an indoor and outdoor shower. Each has a deck with views over the plains and the river. Meals are served outdoors under the trees and special diet menus and private dining can be arranged on request. The lodge also has a bar. Guests can relax on sun loungers at the pool or read a book in the spacious lounge next to the fireplace. The lodge has a a private airstrip, located about 25 minutes' drive away.

A 21 000ha piece of unspoilt africa within the marakele national park (setswana for place of sanctuary), it is unlike anything you have seen. with spectacular landscapes and iconic wildlife, this place holds its own among south africa’s greatest reserves. maratab safari lodge is n the eastern sector of the magnificent marakele national park, at the foot of the waterberg mountains, approximately 3 hours drive north of johannesburg in western limpopo. the lodge creates exclusive and highly-personal experiences for you – from traditional game drives and miss mara water safaris, to specialist marataba hiking trails. come and explore your own way.  a remote outpost in the lap of mountains, this is a place to unwind or find adventure, with loved ones, good friends or on your own. between the hours spent out on safari, the lodge offers a home-from-home to lie by the pool, enjoy a spa treatment, or simply choose your perfect spot to absorb the surrounding bush. game drives, in open safari vehicles, head out each day at sunrise and again in the late afternoon to find the reserve’s many fascinating animals, both diurnal and nocturnal. this is a truly personal experience: no more than seven vehicles are in the concession at any one time and, because the animals are accustomed to them and do not see them as a threat, the field guides are able to take guests within close range of africa’s most impressive species. photographic opportunities are spectacular, special sadc autimn rate.

Miss Mara - Matlabas River

Take an unhurried cruise along the Matlabas River on Miss Mara.

Nothing tops watching the sun shimmy into a liquid horizon in vivid colour, as you sip on a G ‘n T to the splash of a grunting hippo.

The perspective of the bush is quite different when experienced from the water.

An excursion on Miss Mara is highly recommended as a unique and highly enjoyable way to immerse yourself in the magnificence of the reserve.

Morning and afternoon cruises are conducted on the Matlabas River, just 20 minutes drive from the Lodge.

M M arataba Safari Lodge has taken tented camps to a whole new level of style and luxury. Set in a 23 000-hectare concession area of the Marakele National Park in the Waterberg of Limpopo province , Marataba’s décor is a modern African take on ancient tradition.  

The central building is created from dry - stone walling and conical towers that are reminiscent of the African civilisations at Great Zimbabwe and Thulamela, mixed with elegant lighting, glass, steel, wood, cow hide throws , and carpets and divans.  

But it’s the tents of the Marataba Safari Lodge that will astound you. Outside, they seem unexceptional. But once you’re inside, they seem more like opulent works of art created with canvas and stone.  

When you emerge in the early morning, you’ll very likely find elephant tracks meandering along the pathways through the unfenced camp. You are in the wild heart of Big 5 country, and the elephants sometimes like to sip water from the swimming pool.  

This area of the Waterberg, a little over 3 hours ’ drive from Johannesburg, is what rangers call the ‘ sweetveld side ’ . The soils, which are more nutritious here than elsewhere, attract more animals. And even in the depths of winter, the velvety grey camelthorn pods make tasty fodder for the antelope and baboons.  

Above you, dominating every view, is the splendid cliff-face called Kranskop, home to one of South Africa’s largest colonies of Cape griffon vultures. You can be driven to the top here – to be astounded by the sight of these birds flying past you at eye level, rising on thermals.  

Down below, a large expanse of water near the lodge attracts white-faced ducks, spoonbills with their ladle-shaped beaks, and spur-wing geese posing like heraldic emblems on the banks. Above the water, you’ll see a flutter of white and black as a pied kingfisher hovers and dives.

How to get here

Take the N1 north from Johannesburg or Pretoria. Turn off at Bela Bela and take the road towards Leeupoort (R516) and Thabazimbi. Drive through Thabazimbi (a largish mining town). From Thabazimbi, take the Alma road. You’ll find the entrance after about 12km.  

The drive will take between 3 and 4 hours , depending on how many times you stop to drink in exquisite views .  

Best time to visit

This area can be oppressively hot during the height of summer (December to February). It is far more temperate from March to November , although temperatures can drop to near freezing on winter nights (June to August) .

Marataba Mountain Lodge lies within a 23 000-hectare concession in the eastern sector of the magnificent Marakele National Park , at the foot of the Waterberg Mountains, approximately 3.5-hour drive north of Johannesburg in western Limpopo. Thabazimbi, Rustenburg and Ellisras are all within easy reach.

Within a dramatic landscape encompassing vast plains , dense bushveld, winding rivers, deep gorges and majestic mountains, Marataba is an exclusive private concession in the heart of Limpopo's Marakele National Park, a 'place of sanctuary' for Africa's Big Five and a multitude of other animal species including rare antelope such as roan, sable and mountain reedbuck. This malaria-free wilderness is also home to the world's largest breeding colony of the endangered Cape Vulture. Birdlife within the park is prolific with more than 400 species having been recorded, a veritable birder's Eden.

Marataba Mountain Lodge is a stunning eco-friendly camp situated in a remote part of a beautiful 23,000ha concession within the Marakele National Park.

Marataba Mountain Lodge was originally designed for keen hikers looking for a bush adventure in a big 5 game reserve. However now it offers all the same activities as its sister lodge, – game drives, sundowner river cruises and bush walks. But if you are keen to do bush walks, it is very well situated!

The lodge is cleverly hidden on the hillside with 180-degree views into Waterfall Valley . It has a true sense of wilderness, utterly remote and with only 5 rooms.

Everything in the lodge reflects the natural bush outside – it is designed to complement and not compete with the landscape. But great attention has been given to ensuring a quality experience. The result is what they term a ‘Scandi-safari’ design which is off the grid – taking its energy solely from the sun’s rays.

This is the ideal place if you are looking for a ‘digital detox’ with neither wi-fi nor cell phone reception. However solar power allows camera equipment & phones to be recharged to ensure they are always at the ready to capture another glorious day!

All five rooms have spectacular views down into Waterfall Valley, which is particularly magical at sunset. Each has a private shaded viewing deck, fireplace and en suite bathroom with a rain shower (with a view). The lodge has recently added a small swimming pool for relaxation during the heat of the day.

About the Marakele National Park

The Marakele National Park is characterized by contrasting majestic mountain landscapes, grass-clad hills and deep valleys. All the large game species from elephant and rhino to the big cats as well as an amazing variety of birds including the largest colony of endangered Cape Vultures in the world, have settled here.

Marakele is home to most of the large mammals synonymous with the African bush, including elephant, black and white rhino, buffalo, leopard and cheetah. Lion and spotted hyena are the only large predators found in the park. A small pride will soon be re-introduced in the park. The wild dogs have been the first of these re-introductions. Resident antelope include, sable, kudu, eland, impala, waterbuck, tsessebe and many smaller species. Chacma baboon and Vervet monkey are two species to be watched carefully for mischief, particularly around the rest camps.

It is possible to see certain closely related species alongside one another. These include (eastern species first) Southern and Crimson breasted Boubou, Arrow marked and Pied Babbler, Tawny-flanked and Black-chested Prinia, Pintailed and Shafttailed Whydah, Black-eyed and Redeyed Bulbul, Grey and Cape Penduline Tit and Whitebrowed and Kalahari Robin.

The park is an excellent place to look for raptors, with many species using the uplift generated off the cliff faces of the Waterberg to sore on the thermals. Apart from the vultures, visitors should look for Gymnogene, Jackal Buzzard and several eagle species, including Black, African Hawk, Black-breasted Snake and Brown Snake Eagle. In summer Wahlberg's Eagle becomes prominent. On areas of high ground, Cape Rock Thrush, Mocking and Mountain Chat, Malachite and Greater Double-collared Sunbird and Swee Waxbill should be searched for.

Other species to look out for in the lower-lying bushveld and broadleaf woodland regions include Purple Roller, Black Cuckooshrike, Brubru, White-crowned Shrike and White Helmetshrike and the exquisite Blue, Violeteared and Black-cheeked Waxbills. Bee-eaters are conspicuous, particularly White-fronted and Little with Swallow-tailed (winter) and Carmine and European (summer) present as well.

The best safari lodges, according to Travel + Leisure readers, go beyond the traditional game drive with a wide range of cultural experiences.

For Travel + Leisure readers, the best safari lodges in Africa aren't necessarily traditional safari properties — though plenty of those did make this list. Take, for example, Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge — a luxurious base for tracking mountain gorillas in the cloud forest of Rwanda. It seems that this once-in-a-lifetime experience elevated guests' memories beyond those of Big Five safaris: the word amazing appears repeatedly in Bisate reviews.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels (including safari lodges) were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city hotel, resort, or safari lodge based on their locations and amenities.

This year's World's Best list reveals a growing interest in nontraditional safaris. In addition to Bisate at the top spot, there's another Rwandan lodge, One&Only Nyungwe House (No. 3), where the highlights are tracking chimpanzees, bird-watching, and visiting a tea plantation. "A gorgeous property in an incredible location," said one voter. And there's a second gorilla-tracking property on the list: Bwindi Lodge (No. 10), in Uganda. "How special to stay at Bwindi Lodge," wrote one guest, "and be so well cared for when setting out to see the magnificent gorillas."

At No. 2, Gibb's Farm is "the most unique lodge of any kind in East Africa," claimed one reader. Overlooking Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater, a protected area known for its incredible density of wildlife, the 17-cottage property offers activities around its coffee plantation and gardens, as well as bush walks from the property and wildlife drives in the crater. One guest loved that it was "fun for adults and kids." It's "an incredibly beautiful hotel," said another. "The food was amazing, and I loved the farm-to-table philosophy."

Classic safaris are still well represented, with guests favoring wildlife-rich areas such as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, the Masai Mara reserve in Kenya, and the South African Kruger National Park. As well as wildlife sightings and luxurious rooms, it was the people who made an impact on T+L readers. Of andBeyond Bateleur Camp (No. 6), in Kenya's Masai Mara, one reader said that "the guides are truly spectacular," while another described "warm, welcoming service."

On the edge of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Bisate Lodge has six stylish and cozy villas, each overlooking the surrounding villages, forests, and misty mountain peaks. The main activity there is trekking into the national park to spend some time watching the mountain gorillas, but there are also opportunities to see golden monkeys, go hiking in the mountains, or visit the grave of renowned primatologist Dian Fossey. The staff are "amazing," said one reader, who added the food was "delicious," especially the homegrown vegetables. Another fan said staying at Bisate was "the absolute best...experience we have ever had. The food, service, and rooms were beyond amazing."

The details

Jaci's Safari Lodge boasts two exclusive Starbed Suites, six luxury Tented Suites, and two private Family Suites. Decorated in vibrant colors and African textures, each of the six Luxury Tented Suites feature air conditioning, overhead fans, a private outdoor shower, a lavish handcrafted-mosaic indoor bath and private viewing decks. 

The two new Starbed Suites are set over two levels and are perfect for those romantic getaways. These suites are decorated with striking colors and bold and luxurious furnishings, and offer guests the choice of sleeping indoors or under the African sky, with each suite boasting two king-size beds (one on the roof under the stars). Other features include outdoor showers and indoor bathrooms, a comfortable lounge area, a private safari bar and viewing deck.

The Nare Suite , which accommodates up to six people (four adults and two children), is ideal for families or small groups traveling together. This suite includes two bedrooms, an open-plan bathroom with a large stone bath and outdoor shower; and an upstairs loft. The Nare Suite is equipped with a private game viewing vehicle and professional guide. 

The Safari Suite can accommodate up to eight guests (four adults and four children) and is perfect for larger families or groups traveling together. The main bedroom and adjoining second bedroom share an outdoor shower and open-plan bathroom. Across the passage, there is a lounge with adjoining guest room and an upstairs loft. The Safari Suite is equipped with a private game viewing vehicle and professional guide. 

The lodge facilities include an indoor and outdoor dining area, viewing deck, open-plan kitchen, cozy fireplace, lounge and guest-welcome area, outdoor boma area, fully stocked bar, bush swimming pool, bush gym and river walk.

From the moment we arrived in South Africa, our safari adventure was nothing short of extraordinary. Nestled in the heart of the African wilderness, we found ourselves surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes of Kruger National Park, a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. Our accommodation was luxurious yet seamlessly integrated into the natural environment, offering us stunning views of the savannah from the comfort of our private deck. Each day began with an exhilarating sunrise game drive, where our expert guide shared his deep knowledge and passion for the local wildlife. Witnessing the "Big Five" was an awe-inspiring experience that left us in complete awe of nature's magnificence. The guides were incredibly knowledgeable and made sure we felt safe while immersing ourselves in the wilderness. Evenings were equally enchanting, with sundowner drinks enjoyed against the backdrop of a fiery African sunset, followed by sumptuous dinners under the starlit sky. The cuisine was a delightful fusion of local flavors and gourmet dishes, perfectly complementing the day's adventures. The sense of community at the lodge was heartwarming. The staff were attentive, ensuring every need was met with a smile, and fellow travelers quickly became friends as we shared stories around the campfire. Top notch service

Catherine was very helpful and responsive. Our trip was postponed due to the pandemic and she efficiently advocated for us with the game reserves to rebook our trip. Also, the SA embassy in our region required additional police certification of our reservation, the Safari.com team went to the police station and sent us the certified documents on the same day. • The Congo Suite offers a beautiful reminder of Africa. The color scheme is tan with pops of color in the art that D. Wilson and Lisa Wilson placed throughout. With the rolling hills of Ozarks surrounding the Congo, you will get the full “Africa in the Ozarks” experience! The private deck of this suite boasts views of the sprawling valley and beautiful sunrises.

• The Okavango suite is artistically styled with a beautiful blue hue and aluminum colors providing you with a feeling of relaxation and rejuvenation. Meerkats are waiting to greet you in D. Also available if needed are the toilet safety frame and rails in the shower. Both decks are charming with the back deck boasting lovely views of the sprawling valley and beautiful sunsets.

• The Serengeti suite is designed in a purple and red combination delivering the colors of our breathtaking Ozark sunsets. This suite’s artwork by D. Arthur and Lisa Wilson might have you believe you are actually in Africa! The presentation of Lisa’s Mixed Media original art, Passion 2 and Passion 4, hangs over the Queen size bed. The Serengeti suite has many giclee prints like along with a beautiful male lion print over the love seat. Wildebeest, zebras, and giraffes fill this room along with fantastic photographs taken by Scott Smith, our TCWR resident photographer. The private deck of this suite boasts both views of the sprawling valley and beautiful sunrises.

Kalahari Suite at the Zulu Lodge

• The Kalahari suite is a cozy escape with an exotic theme of bamboo and jewel tones throughout. The artistic bamboo headboard above the Queen bed is complemented by original abstract art from Lisa Wilson and D. Arthur Wilson’s Wild Expressionism limited editions. As you relax on either the front or back decks, the gentle caroling of the big cats is music to your ears!
