The Museum of Contemporary Art proudly offers free guided field trips with free transportation to Chicago Public Schools. Registration is open for summer 2023 tours; please use the form on this page to request and email [email protected] with questions.

About Our Guided Field Trips

Learning in the galleries at the MCA happens through inquiry, dialog, play, experimentation, and collective meaning-making. Our educators facilitate conversation around art, ideas, and contemporary issues. They use contemporary art as a vehicle for developing skills in critical observation, interpretation, and inquiry. We build these learning experiences around four key principles:

  • Give students agency. Prioritize the wisdom and experiences of young people.
  • Make meaning together. Encourage students to understand art on the own terms and in community with one another.
  • Explore new modes of learning. Create new, unexpected experiences outside of simple lecture and discussion.
  • Prioritize reflection. Offer content, social context, facts, and historical information as opportunities for students to connect the art to their own lives.

If you would like to reserve a guided field trip, please use the guided field trip calendar . To book a self-guided field trip, use the self-guided field trip calendar . Select the date and time that works for you. You will receive a confirmation in your email. Please visit our Visit page for accessibility information, guidelines for your visit, and directions. Please organize your transportation to arrive as close to 10 am as possible.

The MCA covers the cost of bus transportation for all participating Chicago Public Schools. While we do cover the costs, we do not currently contact, schedule, or organize buses for schools. There are two options for taking advantage of this opportunity:

  • One, your school may invoice the MCA for reimbursement. To receive reimbursement, submit an invoice for the cost of your bus to [email protected] with a current W9 for your school.
  • Two, the bus company may invoice the MCA directly by sending their invoice and payment information to [email protected] . However, if the bus company needs to have a check in hand when they arrive at the MCA, we need at least 3 weeks to process payment.

We ask that your school make reservations two weeks in advance to avoid overcrowding the galleries, preserve the artwork, and secure your chosen date and time. To reserve a guided field trip, please use the guided field trip calendar . To book a self-guided field trip, use the self-guided field trip calendar . Select the date and time that works for you.

Your group can enter the museum at the main staircase located on Mies van der Rohe Drive. Buses can park temporarily at the side of the museum at 220 E. Chicago Ave.

At the end of each MCA email about your field trip, you will find “Make Changes to this event.” Hit the Cancel link or button, then Confirm, to cancel your field trip.

Yes! At the end of each email you receive confirming your field trip, you will find a link labeled “Need to make changes to this event? Reschedule.” You can click the Reschedule link or button to change the date and time of your field trip.

You will receive emails confirming your field trip’s date and time via the email address you entered for the field trip form.

Yes! Your students are welcome to stay in the museum to explore on their own with their chaperones.

All students are free of charge. Illinois teachers and chaperones are also free. Out-of-state chaperones and teachers pay $8 each to enter the museum the day of their visit. To receive a rate of $7 per chaperone and/or teacher, contact [email protected] at least 2 weeks before your field trip.

Yes. Each group of 10 students must be accompanied by at least one (1) adult chaperone or teacher.

Yes! You can arrange a self-guided field trip for your class. Visit the self-guided field trip calendar and select the date and time that works for you. Our Visit page has accessibility information, guidelines for your visit, and directions.

Thank you for bringing your school group to the museum! Please participate within reason, feel free to answer a couple of questions, and encourage participation from your class without singling students out. Our main ask is that you help MCA educators with classroom management. You know your class best, so please share with MCA educators any tips you have for getting students' attention, drawing answers out, and creating a brave and comfortable space. We ask that you stay engaged and avoid leaving the group or being on your phone.

We know it’s difficult to take time out of your schedule and curriculum to spend time with us and we understand that, as chaperones and teachers, you are incredibly busy after planning and leading the trip. Thank you.

Yes! Our Learning staff offer bilingual field trips in English and Spanish on guided field trips. Visit the guided field trip calendar and select the date and time that works for you, then fill in the information requested in the section on bilingual guides.

If you’ve registered for a guided field trip, you may remain in our Learning Studios after your experience to eat lunch. Otherwise, there are no lunch facilities on-site. There are a number of parks in the immediate area where bagged lunches may be eaten in the case of good weather as well as dining options in Water Tower Place.

Yes! No pens, water botles, or backpacks are allowed in the galleries. For this and other tips, check out our Visit page for accessibility information, guidelines for your visit, and directions.

Field trips are a unique opportunity for students to learn outside the classroom and discover new horizons, as well as bond with one another and their teacher. They are a chance to make memories with their classmates that will last a lifetime. A  school bus rental  allows you to safely transport students from their classrooms to their destination, but you will still need to decide where to take your students for the best fun but educational field trips in Chicago. We are lucky to have many possible field trip destinations within easy reach, so here are some Chicago field trips ideas.

#1. Garfield Park Conservatory

Garfield Park Conservatory is one of the best educational places in Chicago. Best geared for students in grades 3 to 8, it is a unique chance to get up close and personal with exotic flora from around the world through eight indoor display gardens and 10 acres of outdoor gardens.

The Chicago Athenaeum focuses on art and design in all its forms, including architecture, industrial and product design, graphics, landscape architecture, and urban planning. #4. Harold Washington Library Center

A visit to the Marker Lab is a must for all science field trips in Chicago. Geared towards children in grades 7 to 12, the Harold Washington Library Center encourages students to experience first-hand some of the principles they learned in STEAM class while using high-tech gadgets such as 3D printers, digital design software, etc.

#5. Lincoln Park Zoo

fun field trips in chicago

Which child does not like a trip to the zoo? A visit to the Lincoln Park Zoo, where elementary and middle school students can visit nearly 200 exotic species from around the world, undoubtedly makes for one of the most fun field trips in Chicago. And best of all, it is free!

#6. DePaul University Art Museum

Five Great Spots for STEM Field Trips in Chicago

  • January 23, 2019

Field trips aren’t just for the Senior Class and the band kids anymore! We get tons of inquiries for private tours from science and engineering teachers. To help with your field trip planning, we’re highlighting the best spots for STEM field trips in Chicago. Of course, we’re always happy to lead your charges on one of our private tours , like the Downtown Chicago Bucket List tour.

We research stories from Chicago history, architecture and culture like this while developing our  live virtual tours ,   in-person private tours , and  custom content for corporate events . You can join us to experience Chicago’s stories in-person or online. We can also create  custom tours and original conten t about this Chicago topic and countless others.

#1. Museum of Science and Industry

Jackson Park Palace of Fine Arts Museum of Science and Industry

The Museum of Science and Industry is the perfect starting point for STEM field trips in Chicago. MSI is stuffed to the gills with fascinating scientific displays and exhibits. My particular favorites are the coal mine, the Pioneer Zephyr, and the artificial storm creator. I bet your students will demand to see U-505 , a German WWII submarine preserved after its 1944 capture. Also, don’t forget to tell your students that MSI is the only remaining structure from the famous 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. They can learn more about the World’s Fair in one of our virtual tours , too.

#2. Adler Planetarium

Adler Planetarium STEM field trips in Chicago

The smallest of the institutions out on Museum Campus might just be the perfect one for STEM field trips in Chicago. Adler Planetarium is, in fact, the first planetarium in the country, founded all the way back in 1930. These days, the star (hehe) attraction is The Universe: A Walk Through Time and Space . This general admission exhibit will lead your students on a walk to the furthest stretches of astronomy. You may also want to consider all-access passes so you can see one of the planetarium shows .

#3. Argonne National Laboratory

The National Laboratories are a likely career goal for many a STEM student. So why not visit the oldest of them, Argonne National Laboratory , out in suburban Lemont? Argonne dates back to the Manhattan Project, carrying out experiments that led to Chicago Pile-1 and the dawn of the atomic age. Student visitors to Argonne engage in Learning Labs , which are “hands-on experiments designed to educate participants on the major challenges that Argonne scientists and engineers are currently researching.”

#4. Fermilab

Fermilab STEM field trips in Chicago

Chicago’s history of cutting-edge scientific research means we have two National Laboratories in the hinterlands. Fermilab , named after the Chicago-based physicist Enrico Fermi, is the Department of Energy’s particle accelerator. I won’t pretend to understand exactly what they’re doing out near Batavia. Your STEM students will enjoy visiting the spot where the “ Top Quark ” was discovered. Like Argonne, Fermilab offers Science Adventures for students, making this another great spot for STEM field trips in Chicago.

#5. McCormick Bridgehouse Museum and the Riverwalk

McCormick bridgehouse Museum Riverwalk

The Field Museum of Natural History is justly a go-to spot for STEM field trips in Chicago, and you may have expected it to round out our list. I want to highlight a smaller institution for your visit: the McCormick Bridgehouse Museum and the adjacent Riverwalk. The Bridgehouse Museum , located in the famous Michigan Avenue Bridge, explores both the natural history and human engineering of the Chicago River. Before or after their museum visit, students can explore the Riverwalk , a beautiful new addition to Chicago’s space.

Enjoy your STEM Field Trips in Chicago!

Any and all of these spots for STEM field trips in Chicago should leave students both entertained and enlightened. Such an experience can be just what budding, tech-savvy kids need to blossom into tomorrow’s great minds.

I’m a fifth generation Chicagoan and a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis. In addition to guiding tours, I’m a creative writer and amateur genealogist. I also enjoy the city’s dynamic theater scene. You can also read overlooked stories from 19th-century newspapers on my “Second Glance History” blog. I live in River North.

Chicago is unique as it always evolves into the future while holding on to the past. I’m fascinated by how people latch on to old architecture but happily pave over others. My background is in theater and performance and I’ve been a tour guide here for more than 10 years. Currently I’m finishing my Master’s in Public History at Loyola University because I love to teach the history of this scrappy city. I’m in the Edgewater neighborhood.

Operations Coordinator and Tour Guide

Chicago’s history is so fascinating, you could spend a lifetime uncovering its secrets…I’m willing to give it a try! I have an M.A. in US History from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and then pursued doctoral studies in Urban History at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I love to learn new aspects of Chicago’s rich history and then share my knowledge as a tour guide with Chicago Detours. I live in Ravenswood.

Content Manager and Tour Guide

Chicago has so many neighborhoods, buildings, and by-ways that it’s hard to go long without seeing something new, or something familiar from a new angle. I studied Cinema History for my M.A. from the University of Chicago. I’ve worked as a culture writer for various publications and as an educator of the humanities at the City Colleges of Chicago. I’m thrilled to share my love of this city’s busy past and unique architectural spaces with Chicago Detours. I live in the Chicago neighborhood of Lincoln Park.

260+ Field Trip Ideas for Grades Pre-K Through 12 (In-Person and Virtual)

Get out of the classroom and explore the world!

Students on field trips to the local theater and a fire station.

Field trips are a quintessential school experience. You usually only get one or two a year so it’s important to do it right! Our roundups of unique field trip ideas have something for every age, subject, and interest. We’ve even got resources like permission slip forms and chaperone tips. Get ready to leave the classroom behind to take learning on the road!

Preschool Field Trip Ideas

Early-grade field trips help kids learn about the world and also teach them good field trip behavior. These are our top picks for the pre-K crowd, but many of the options on our kindergarten list are perfect for this age group too.

  • Library: Not every student’s parents take them to story time. Schedule your own trip, and show kids that having fun isn’t hard when you have a library card!
  • Farm: Whether you learn how vegetables are grown or where milk and eggs come from, the farm is always a hit.
  • Grocery store: Go behind the scenes at the supermarket, and use this trip as the foundation for lessons on healthy eating.
  • Park: From local playgrounds to majestic national parks, it’s always worth getting kids into the great outdoors.
  • Children’s museum: This is the age group most children’s museums were designed for! They’ll love all the hands-on fun and excitement.
  • Post office: Learn how mail is sorted and shipped, and teach students about stamps and other mail-related items.
  • Bank: Money is a new concept for these kiddos, and they’ll be fascinated to step inside the vault and learn other bank secrets.
  • Fire station: There’s just something about a fire truck that gets every little one excited.
  • Nursing home: Is there anything sweeter than watching seniors and wee ones spend time together?
  • Animal shelter: For kids who don’t have pets at home, this can be a good introduction to animals. Others will just enjoy the time with dogs and cats waiting for their forever homes.

Middle and High School Field Trip Ideas

Middle school students on a field trip to a water reclamation facility

@salinasvalleybasingsa

For this age group, you’ll need to step up your game a bit. (They’ve probably already been to the zoo, the aquarium, and the art museum.) Try some of these locations, which offer educational, social-emotional, and real-life learning opportunities.

  • Food bank: Hold a food drive, then arrange a trip to your local soup kitchen or food pantry. Volunteering makes for truly meaningful field trips.
  • Recycling facility: In a time when reducing landfill waste is more important than ever, a trip to a recycling facility can help drive home the message.
  • Theater: Many theaters offer behind-the-scenes tours for schools and discount pricing when you buy tickets in bulk. (Want to go virtual? Check out the Hamilton Education Program !)
  • Community college: Parents sometimes take kids on college visits, but a community college trip offers opportunities for even more students to see themselves getting a higher education.
  • TV station: Kids interested in communications or technology will find this completely fascinating.
  • Courtroom: There’s no better way to understand the justice system than to see it in action.
  • State or county capitol: Every government class should visit a local capitol to meet with officials and see how the government works.
  • Local business: This can be a cool way to learn about managing a business, working with customers, or discovering how products are made.
  • Wildlife rehab facility: Introduce students to the people who help injured wild animals recover and live free once again.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — As Ajay Stone strolled around historic Rickwood Field and gazed at tributes displayed in honor of Willie Mays and other Negro Leaguers, he clutched a cherished memory under his arm.

It was a picture from 2004 of Mays holding Stone’s then-10-month-old daughter Haley, who was wearing San Francisco Giants gear. In Mays’ hand was a chunk of a chocolate chip cookie, which he was handing over for Haley to eat.

“Willie gave her that cookie. She had no teeth,” Stone remembered. “But we took the cookie and we kept it in her stroller for a year and a half. The great Willie Mays gave it to her, so it was special to us.”

Stone and his wife Christina traveled from Charlotte, North Carolina, to be in Birmingham, Alabama, on Thursday for a moment they deemed just as special.

It was hours before Rickwood Field hosted its first Major League Baseball game, as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Giants 6-5 . The game, which MLB called “A Tribute to the Negro Leagues,” was meant to honor the legacy of Mays and other Black baseball greats who left an enduring mark on the sport.

MLB planned a week of activities around Mays and the Negro Leagues, including an unveiling ceremony on Wednesday of a Willie Mays mural in downtown Birmingham. Those tributes took on a more significant meaning Tuesday afternoon when Mays died at 93. As news of his death spread throughout Birmingham, celebrations of his life ramped up.

You could hear the celebration at Rickwood Field on Thursday even before arriving at the ballpark with the rapid thumping of a drum echoing from inside the ballpark, excited murmurs from fans skipping toward the music and frequent bursts of laughter.

Inside, there were reminders of history all around.

There were photos and artifacts of baseball Hall of Famers who played at the 114-year-old ballpark, including Jackie Robinson, Josh Gibson and Satchel Paige. The original clubhouse of the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro Leagues, where Mays got his pro start in 1948, was open. A memorial of Mays was at the front, with bobbleheads, a signed glove and his Black Barons and San Francisco Giants jerseys on display.

Outside, fans stood in line to hold a baseball bat used by Mays in 1959. They took photos sitting inside an original bus from 1947 that was typically used during barnstorming tours by Negro Leagues teams. They danced to live music and ate food from concession stands featuring menu boards designed to reflect the look and feel of the 1940s.

Eddie Torres and his son Junior wore matching Giants jerseys as they took pictures inside the ballpark. They’re lifelong Giants fans who came from California for the game.

“I never even got to see Willie Mays play, but as a Giants fan, you knew what he meant to the game of baseball,” Torres said. “My son, he’s only 11. Willie Mays had such an effect on the game that even he knew who Willie Mays was.”

Musical artist Jon Batiste strummed a guitar while dancing on a wooden stage near home plate just before the first pitch. Fans stood as former Negro Leaguers were helped to the field for a pregame ceremony.

Shouts of “Willie! Willie! broke out after a brief moment of silence.

For Michael Jackson, sitting in the stands at Rickwood Field reminded him of the past.

The 71-year-old Jackson played baseball in the 1970s and 80s with the East Thomas Eagles of the Birmingham Industrial League, which was a semi-professional league made up of iron and steel workers that was an integral form of entertainment in Birmingham in the 20th century.

Jackson’s baseball journey took him to Rickwood Field many times. After all these years, he was just excited that it’s still standing.

“It’s nice seeing them re-do all of this,” he said, “instead of tearing it down. We played in the same ballpark they named after Willie Mays out in Fairfield (Alabama). And then I had my times out here playing at this ballpark. It’s all very exciting.”

Olympics | Noah Lyles speeds through finals to earn spot at Olympics in 100 meters

Noah Lyles celebrates after winning the men's 100-meter final during the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Team Trials Sunday, June 23, 2024, in Eugene, Ore. (AP Photo/Charlie Neibergall)

Noah Lyles is the flashiest, and the fastest, sprinter in the United States — maybe even the world.

We’ll all get to find out later this summer in Paris thanks to a come-from-behind victory for Lyles in the 100 meters at the U.S. track trials Sunday — a 9.83-second sprint that secured his spot at an Olympics where he has his sights set on electrifying his sport.

“Part of the plan, nothing’s changed,” Lyles said after the win. “It might be a shock to everybody else but when you know the goal, you know the goal.”

Lyles overcame a slow start to match his best time ever in the sprint that crowns the Fastest Man in the World.

He beat 200-meter specialist Kenny Bednarek by .04. Fred Kerley, the 2022 world champion, finished in third and will also go to Paris. Christian Coleman, the 2019 world champ, was in the lead with about 30 meters left but finished fourth.

The Lyles win makes the American sprint favorites 2 for 2 after three days of these trials. It comes a day after Sha’Carri Richardson also lived up to expectations and won the women’s 100 to earn her trip to Paris.

Both of these sprinters shine in their own way. Lyles is on a mission to lift up an entire sport that has been dimmer ever since Usain Bolt exited stage right after the Olympics in 2016.

In keeping with that theme, the 26-year-old Lyles showed up to Hayward Field in a neatly tailored sports coat and pants and was handed a box with his freshly pressed racing uniform. He wore white pearls for the race, and when he was introduced, he leaped and jumped about 30 yards down the track, imploring the crowd at Hayward Field to get on its feat.

Snoop Dogg was in the house and has watched some of the action with Lyles’ mother, who is almost as entertaining to watch as her son; up in the stands, she fell to her knees after he reeled in Kerley to his right, then Coleman and Bednarek to his left.

This marks the first national title in the 100 for Lyles, who has three 200-meter world titles but reimagined his goals after a disappointing third-place finish at the Tokyo Games in that race. Last year, the world saw the work start to pay off.

Lyles won the world championship at 100, 200 and the 4×100 relay last year in Budapest. His 100 time on a cool, still night at Hayward Field matched the time he ran to win worlds. If he can pull off the triple again, he would be in company with Bolt, the Jamaican great who went 3 for 3 all three times he raced at the Olympics.

“If I didn’t get third place in Tokyo, I wouldn’t have that desire, wouldn’t have that fire burning, wouldn’t have accomplished what I accomplished in the past,” he said. “And now, I constantly look to the future with open eyes because anything can happen.”

Lyles, who races next weekend for a spot in the 200, might even be in the mix to win four medals. No. 4 could come in the 4×400, and if he does that, he would be in the company of the likes of Carl Lewis and even Jesse Owens.
