Combating modern slavery and human trafficking.

Millions of people trust American to care for them on life’s journey. We fly over borders, walls and stereotypes to bring people together and connect people, cultures and commerce worldwide. Unfortunately, making the world a smaller place can come with the risk of exploitation by human traffickers. The breadth of products and services American procures across its global supply chain may also expose the company to modern slavery risk.

As a global airline, we recognize our unique role and responsibility to combat human trafficking, modern slavery and child exploitation. We embrace this responsibility by maintaining a comprehensive human trafficking and modern slavery prevention program. American’s program comprises four essential elements: (1) policies and due diligence processes addressing human trafficking and modern slavery; (2) team member training to identify and report suspected human trafficking and forced labor; (3) internal accountability and reporting mechanisms to report suspected human trafficking, forced labor, or other activity inconsistent with our Standards of Business Conduct, and; (4) external engagement and collaboration with government agencies, industry partners and non-government organizations.

CWT Statement against slavery and human trafficking

CWT, a global provider of travel and meetings and event management services, strictly upholds the highest business and ethical standards in its business and supply chain.

Through the CWT Code of Business Ethics and Conduct and the CWT ESG program, the company holds itself and those with whom it works to high standards of ethics and conduct. This commitment to employees, clients, suppliers and other partners and stakeholders is at the core of the way in which CWT does business:

  • CWT opposes all forms of slavery and human trafficking – without exception.
  • CWT is committed to taking steps to influence our business partners and supply chains.
  • As a signatory to the UN Global Compact since 2012, CWT actively supports the Compact’s Ten Principles focusing on the core areas of human rights, labor, the environment and anti-corruption.
  • CWT adheres to the International Labor Organization’s Fundamental Labor standards.
  • CWT reports annually on progress towards these principles (see the  Ethics and Compliance and ESG pages ).

CWT introduced a Responsible Supplier Code  in 2015, which sets out the standards of conduct CWT expects from any and all suppliers, including:

  • compliance with applicable laws,
  • agreement to prevent slavery or trafficking in their own business and supply chains, and
  • the Universal Declaration of Human Rights ,
  • the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact , and
  • the International Labor Organization’s Fundamental Labor standards .

CWT reserves the right to terminate relationships with suppliers found to be in breach of the Responsible Supplier Code and to audit suppliers’ compliance with its terms.

CWT seeks to establish and maintain relationships with suppliers with a view to ensuring that all parts of the supply chain act in accordance with applicable laws, CWT’s values and ethical principles.

CWT’s employment and labor practices reinforce a safe, healthy and inclusive workplace with a strong culture of collaboration and respect for others. This is underpinned by policies fostering mutual respect and dignity, promoting diversity, inclusion and respect for human rights, and workplace health and security (see CWT’s Code of Business Ethics and Conduct for more details).

CWT has been recognized by EcoVadis as a leader in responsible business practices among global businesses.

All employees of CWT are required to complete annual training on our business conduct and ethics policies.  

CWT has a long-standing partnership with PACT - Protect All Children from Trafficking (formerly ECPAT) - a non-profit organization working to protect children from trafficking, sexual exploitation, and online abuse. We provided expert guidance to PACT to develop e-learning training aimed specifically at helping travel management professionals, corporate travel managers, and those working in meetings and events to better identify and stop human trafficking in our industries.

CWT and its employees continue to work with our non-profit partners to make an impact towards ending human trafficking in all forms.

This statement is made pursuant to section 54(1) of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 and constitutes CWT's statement against modern slavery and human trafficking as approved by CWT’s Executive Leadership Team.

Intrepid Travel, Flight Centre Partner To Address Modern Slavery Supply Chain Risks

Defined by the United Nations as “an umbrella term covering practices such as forced labour, debt bondage, forced marriage, and human trafficking,” modern slavery impacts an estimated 50 million people around the world — including those in the travel industry. 

Intrepid Travel has launched a new travel consortium in partnership with Flight Centre , marking the first major collaboration aimed at measuring and addressing modern slavery supply chain risks across the industry.    

Modern slavery is an atrocious and covert crime which refers to situations of exploitation that a person cannot refuse or leave because of threats, violence, coercion, deception, and abuse of power. Walk Free , an international human rights group, has reported the problem is getting worse, with an estimated 50 million people impacted around the world in 2022.

Every company is at risk of being involved in this crime, whether they know it or not, and while governments have taken some measures to ensure businesses are complying with human rights standards, supply chains continue to present a great risk due to lack of transparency and access to resources.

The tourism industry is no exception. From souvenirs purchased, to hospitality services provided, exploitation within travel continues to exist within supply chains. Intrepid has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to modern slavery in its own operations, and is taking this a step further, by more deeply evaluating and providing support to its 5,500 direct suppliers. 

With many shared suppliers across travel and tourism, Intrepid and Flight Centre knew a joint effort from the industry would be most effective. 

The new consortium, established through the Informed365 platform, will engage with tier 1 suppliers, through an annual, online assessment to identify risks, analyze knowledge and actions, understand suppliers’ needs, and provide the support and tools they need to improve their own practices and those of their own supply chain. Industry suppliers will only need to complete the survey once, and they can elect for it to be shared with other business partners, reducing the burden for suppliers and overall issues of compliance.

Founding members Intrepid Travel and Flight Centre have already begun to roll out these surveys and tools to their suppliers globally and are now actively encouraging other businesses to join the consortium to collaborate on eliminating modern slavery in tourism. 

“For so long businesses in every industry have ignored or fallen short of addressing the risks of modern slavery in their supply chains,” said Sara King, General Manager of Purpose for Intrepid Travel. “The reality is, we are our suppliers, and we hope the tourism industry can lead this change in mindset for businesses everywhere, to protect vulnerable people and communities around the world,” she added. 

The travel consortium is open to all travel and tourism companies around the world that have reporting obligations related to Modern Slavery, whether they are legislated or voluntary.
