All cabins on the 48-passenger National Geographic Islander II have windows, and some even have private patios. The ship offers deck hammocks, Wi-Fi, and food made with ingredients sourced from farms in the Galápagos whenever possible. Large Galápagos Ships

Galápagos National Park officials have set a maximum of 100 passengers per vessel, so these are some of the largest ships in the archipelago. Travelers may opt for a larger-capacity cruise ship for more space (such as bigger hallways and staircases for easier movement around the ship) and increased services like an onboard doctor. 9 things I wish I had known before taking a Galapagos cruise

After a long pandemic of being landlocked in my suburban New Jersey home, my family and I were ready for an adventure.

We wanted an adventure that felt both COVID-19 safe and would be equally appealing to myself, my husband and my teenage son. The solution came in the form of a bucket-list idea that suddenly became attainable: a small ship cruise through the remote Galapagos Islands on Quasar Expeditions ' Evolution.

Many (OK, most) travelers book an adventure cruise to the Galapagos well in advance. Not us. Enticed by special fares and a desperate need to get away, I finalized our travel plans just three weeks before we sailed to Darwin's evolutionary proving ground. I was as enthusiastic about the wildlife I was about to encounter as I was about Ecuador's mandatory vaccination policies , both for arrivals in the country and then again to enter the protected Galapagos Islands . (Extra bonus: To board our 32-person Quasar ship, everyone also had to present a negative COVID-19 antigen test .)

The trip exceeded all expectations: The abundant wildlife was surreal, the scenery stupendous and the guiding some of the best I've ever experienced (and I've been on dozens of African safaris ). The small ship truly felt like home after a week, as we made friends with what turned out to be fewer than 20 fellow travelers ranging from 10 to 80 years of age. It was an amazing family vacation.

In hindsight, though, even the most memorable getaway could have gone more smoothly. With just a few weeks to shop and pack for the cruise , I focused on what I thought were the necessities — and sometimes I went astray.

If I ever get back to see the playful sea lions, the easy-going boobies and the technicolor marine life, here's what I would do differently now that I know the secrets to traveling in the Galapagos.

Prepare for the sun

Ecuador is on the equator. Yes, this sounds obvious, especially when I see it in black and white. I anticipated strong sun and made sure to load up on SPF 50+ sunscreen for my family, but we still felt the effects of the straight-on rays that are a hallmark of the destination nearly 365 days a year.

One afternoon, after peeling off the shortie wetsuit that Quasar issues each guest, I sat chatting in my bathing suit for about 10 minutes — and quickly turned the color of a Sally Lightfoot crab. Lesson learned.

Instead of simply bringing topical lotions, I'd recommend sun-shield clothing — including long-sleeved swim shirts — with built in SPF. For island explorations, a wide-brimmed hat (not just a baseball cap) should be mandatory.

While you're at it, take a fashion note from the guides — who are usually covered head to toe in sun-protective gear — and throw in a neck gaiter, too, so the back of your neck doesn't take on a ruby-red hue.

Waterproof everything

A lot of what makes a Galapagos cruise fascinating is the time spent exploring on the water, in the water and on islands close to water. Bring all the waterproof cases and pouches you might want to keep your belongings safe and dry.

I invested in a top-notch underwater camera and would recommend the same to anyone taking a trip like this. My photos of twirling sea lions, swimming sea tortoises and neon fish are my favorite trip souvenirs.

However, I left my waterproof phone case at home, thinking I'd only use the camera. Big mistake. The small ships in the Galapagos rely on pangas, or inflatable dinghies, to speed passengers from boat to beach. We also paddled kayaks — often alongside playful sea lions. I didn't need an underwater camera for these on-the-water rides, but I was afraid to pull out my phone to grab quick pictures for fear of it might get wet. Because I didn't have a waterproof case, I missed a lot of the action.

Another thing I'd pack next time: A waterproof stash bag to keep both my phone and my clothes dry on the bumpy pangas and on the beach.

Pack a guide to birds, plants and wildlife

The Galapagos authorities require that every visitor to the islands be in a professionally guided group of no more than 16 people and on a boat that doesn't exceed 100 people. (Evolution assigns about 12 people to each guide). Our Quasar guides were fascinating career naturalists who had each been guiding in the Galapagos for more than 25 years.

However, there are a LOT of birds in the Galapagos, and a guide wasn't always available to point out each one. I'm talking 13 types of finches, each with a special niche, plus hundreds of other species of rare fauna and flora. At the end of the day, I often couldn't keep my finches straight.

While there's a library on board, I found myself jealous of the younger kids who brought along checklist books and simple guides to keep track of wildlife. Next time, I'll stock up on basic bird and animal guidebooks and bring a journal to keep notes and lists.

Invest in binoculars for everyone in the family

One of the truly unique aspects of touring the Galapagos Islands is how unfazed the birds and other wildlife are when humans approach. You can walk right up to a nesting Nazca booby and it will simply tilt its head and look at you. Wander up to sunning sea lions and they'll act like you're not there.

But not all of the action happens up close. Some birds are more majestic soaring in the air. You might need to watch a whale crest a wave or a penguin perch on a glistening rock from afar. In these instances, it helps to have binoculars.

Although you can borrow a pair for a bit, you'll want your own to take in all the scenery. We had one pair for the three of us, and I wished we had two more, so we never had to share or miss out on far-away wildlife sighting.

Bring more U.S. currency than you think you'll need

Ecuador uses the U.S. dollar as currency, so I didn't need to exchange money before or during my trip. Therefore, I mistakenly thought my travel finances would be smooth sailing.

Not so. ATMs are scarce in the capital city of Quito where I started my trip and almost nonexistent on the islands. Yet cash is king at small, family-owned businesses and when it comes to tipping. I had counted on withdrawing more dollars from ATMs as needed, but found myself rationing my bills instead. Next time, I'll stash more cash in my wallet before I leave the U.S.

Prepare for seasickness

In my years as a travel writer, I've sailed on all sorts of ships — a tall-masted sailboat around the Greek Islands, an expedition ship in the Arctic Ocean, cruise ships big and small — and never been seasick. I even got married on a yacht on the Hudson River. I have never experienced the wave of nausea I experienced mid-way through my Galapagos cruise.

I've been on rough seas, but my trusty acupressure point bracelets always got me through, as they were evidently doing for the first part of this adventure. Then I stopped wearing them because I was spending so much time snorkeling that it seemed like too much "work" to keep taking them off and putting them back on.

Don't make the same mistake. The animals on the islands may be peaceful, but the Pacific Ocean can be rough, especially when the ship is covering long distances. Keep seasickness medications close at hand and acupressure bracelets on any time the ship is moving.

Power up for a cruise

Ecuador uses the same electrical current as the U.S. — 110 volts — so I left my converter at home. I forgot that my travel converter has several lightning cord slots, so it doubles as a plug extender, allowing me to power up all my devices at once when I'm on the road.

With only one plug in the room, and two people sharing the space, we were constantly shuffling our electronics. Next time, I would bring a small multiplug power strip (a good hack for any cruise -- just make sure it's one without a surge protector).

Download entertainment ahead of time

One thing I learned to love during my time on Evolution was the ability to unplug completely. No Wi-Fi, no cell service— a truly disconnected vacation. Every mealtime was marked by a lovely exchange of conversation without the distraction of pinging phones.

However, I didn't plan ahead for evening downtime. For the future, I'd load up my iPad with entertainment options ahead of time, which would have been helpful for the plane ride home, too.

Take baby steps back to reality

The most important thing I would change if I could do it all again? Not head right back home after our bucket-list cruise.

We gently eased into Ecuador at the beginning of our weeklong cruise, spending two nights nestled in the heart of historic Quito, exploring the architecture and enjoying a stay at the iconic Casa Gangotena. But the last day of the cruise, we flew back to Quito at night and stayed at a hotel in a far corner of the city. It was too late to do anything but eat in our room, and then we headed back to the airport in the dark early morning hours.

In retrospect, we should have spent an additional day easing back into reality and exploring the surrounding cloud forest — which would have been a much more relaxing and special way to end our adventure. Of course, it's a good excuse to plan a return visit to Ecuador, and hopefully the Galapagos Islands, in the future.

*** EXCLUSIVE ***  Members of Viking ‘s loyalty program, Viking Explorer Society, have been given a sneak-peek and early booking access to the cruise company’s next destination: South America’s Galapagos Islands and Machu Picchu.

Viking says the addition of the Galapagos in 2021 will build its “breadth of itineraries”, as it continues to expand “beyond the world’s great rivers, oceans and lakes”.

“Your clients can experience a once-in-a-lifetime sailing that combines the treasures of South America’s western shores with the captivating Galápagos Islands. From Peru’s cultural capital, Lima to Machu Picchu, they will encounter the region’s distinct and colourful culture,” Viking revealed in a trade update on Friday.

Viking has exclusively chartered the 18-year-old Santa Cruz II , a 90-passenger expedition vessel which will be renovated to “reflect the clean, elegant Scandinavian design for which Viking is known”. Currently, the 71.5-metre-long, five-deck expedition-class ship features four cabin styles (all with windows, no balconies), including the top-of-the-line 30-square-metre Darwin Suites, of which there are three.

The itineraries spend the bulk of their time on the land in Peru exploring Lima, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Cuzco, then onto Ecuador before joining either a four-, five- or six-night cruise (depending on the itinerary) in Baltra.

On some sailings, three-night pre- and post-cruise extensions are available to the Amazon, Ballestas Islands, Mashpi Lodge and Quito, along with a six-night Ecuador land exploration.

According to Viking’s website, there will be three cabin options available: Oceanview, Deluxe and Junior Suite.

Santa Cruz II will be refurbished in November and her first Viking departure is slated for 31 December this year.

Viking's Peru and Galapagos Islands itineraries

The program consists of three itinerary options taking in two countries, all operating between Lima and Quito. The journeys include a 15-day East Galapagos, Machu Picchu and Peru journey; 13-day West Galapagos, Machu Picchu and Peru; and 13-day Wild Galapagos, Machu Picchu and Peru.

Prices start at $12,995 per person (West Galapagos and Wild Galapagos) and $13,995 (East Galapagos).

Bookings will open to the general public on 2 March 2020.

The Most Luxurious Cruise Ships at Sea

With each passing year, cruise ships grow more opulent and extravagant, with everything from retractable ceilings to butler's pantries. The cream of the crop rival some of the world's best hotels, and have price tags to match. (One of the ships on this list even commands six-figure fares.) While a fun cruise can be had relatively inexpensively, if you want to sail in style on your next cruise — or just daydream about how the other half lives — here are some of the most lavish options.

The Ritz-Carlton Evirma

The Ritz-Carlton is taking to the seas with its new ship the Evirma , which is slated to debut later this summer. After years-long pandemic-related delays, cruisers can now experience the hotel-like suites, including two-story penthouse lofts, and suites with private terraces and whirlpools designed to rival a luxury apartment. The ship is all about pampering: amenities include spa rooms, personal trainers, multiple pools and lounge areas, and the "S.E.A" restaurant, designed by a chef that runs a Ritz restaurant with three Michelin stars. 

Sanctuary Ananda

Custom-built by local craftsman using traditional materials, the Sanctuary Ananda is all about sleek luxury and Burmese style. The teak-filled ship resembles an upscale Burmese home and has 21 spacious suites, a luxe Owner's Suite, a sundeck, and an outdoor pool. All of the suites have floor-to-ceiling windows, full balconies, Malaika Egyptian-cotton sheets, and bathrooms stocked with L'Occitane products.

Princess Cruises Sky Princess

The  Sky Princess  offers cruisers spa services, two top-deck pools, and world-class dining at more than 25 restaurants and bars, including La Mer from 3-Michelin star chef Emmanuel Renaut. The ship's Sky Suites offer space for five guests, with two bedrooms and two baths, 270-degree views, and the largest balconies at sea.

Celebrity Edge

The Celebrity Edge includes 950-square-foot residences known as Edge Villas, with each featuring one bedroom and two bathrooms, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a private terrace, and a plunge pool. There's also a private "luxury resort" onboard where a sundeck, pool, lounge, and restaurant are reserved exclusively for suite-class guests. The new guest room concept, Edge Stateroom with Infinite Veranda , turns the entire living space into a veranda. 

Ponant Le Laperouse

Ponant's Le Laperouse includes 24-hour butler service for those on Deck 6, an infinity pool, spa, and a fitness room with a sauna. The ship also offers a multi-sensorial underwater lounge. The lounge is a below-sea-level space that allows passengers — thanks to portholes, cameras, and hydrophones — to see and hear what's happening underwater. 

Oceania Marina and Riviera

Oceania's Marina and Riviera ships each include a grand staircase designed by Lalique featuring ornate double stairs with balustrades of crystal medallions. These sailing works of art involved 74 artisans laboring for 3,200 hours and using 9,200 pounds of crystal. The Owner's Suites have 2,000 square feet and are furnished with Ralph Lauren decor. The suites span the full width of the ship and include grand entry foyers with hand-laid tiles. 

Hanseatic Nature and Inspiration

For the cruise goer who likes to get off the beaten path , there are these two ships  with expeditions as far north as the Arctic Circle, as far south as Antarctica, and plenty of adventurous locales in between. Each ship has modern suites, a fitness and wellness area, extendible glass balconies, state-of-the-art environmental technology, 180-degree observation decks, and cushy restaurants and lounges for in-between explorations. 

Silversea Silver Muse

The Silver Muse was designed with a focus on upper-category suites and connecting suites. Each comes with a dedicated butler — yes, please — and the Owner's Suite even includes a private veranda with floor-to-ceiling glass doors and a dining room for six. 

MS Europa 2

A combination of a yacht and a small resort, the MS Europa 2 has its share of stunning suites, including a 1,066-square-foot Owner's Suite and 840-square-foot penthouse suite. The ship also features family apartments where children and parents live in separate areas connected by a door and a balcony — with one side kitted out specifically for young travelers. MS Europa 2 has both public and private spa spaces for guests who want a sauna, whirlpool, and relaxation (and sometimes all to themselves).

Viking Star

Designed to look like a Nordic ski lodge, the Viking Star is decorated with stunning light woods like birch and juniper. Like many other ships, the Owner's Suite is the most luxurious. The 1,448-square-foot accommodation includes multiple rooms, a private veranda, and three flat-screen televisions. The master bathroom features a heated floor in addition to the usual glass-enclosed shower and double sink, and there's a private library, ocean-view dry sauna, and a boardroom for catered parties. 

MS Roald Amundsen

Scandinavian design and science enthusiasts will jump at the chance to board the new  MS Roald Amundsen , a hybrid ship that reduces emission by sailing with electrical propulsion. In addition to stunning interiors, the ship boasts a wellness center, indoor and outdoor observation decks, infinity pool, and the Amundsen Science Center. The space is packed with state-of-the-art technology such as touch screens and science equipment as well as lecture spaces, a small library, and speciality areas for workshops in photography, biology, and more. 

Seabourn Encore

A ship designed to look and feel like a luxury yacht, the Seabourn Encore includes 300 suites, all with balconies, walk-in closets, and bathrooms that have marble touches. The Wintergarden Suites are even more deluxe, each with a dining area, a butler's pantry, and a solarium with a bathtub that provides sea views. Need more space? A neighboring cabin can be added to form a grand suite. 

Uniworld S.S. Maria Theresa

Described by Cruise Critic as regal in its 18th century décor, this homage to the former Austrian empress resembles a floating palace . All accommodations include made-to-order Savoir of England beds, Egyptian cotton sheets, and marble-lined bathrooms. There's also a Viennese café and an enclosed, heated pool. 

M/S Paul Gauguin

When not exploring gorgeous destinations, guests of the five-star ship will find the ship includes a watersports marina, extensive spa, butler service, and Apple music systems in many rooms. The Owner's Suite 7002 is 531 square feet, not including the private balcony. The suite bathroom features a full-size tub and separate dressing area. 

Seabourn Ovation

This cruise ship shines thanks to a few A-list contributors. The restaurant menu on the Seabourn Ovation was dreamed up in partnership with Thomas Keller, who has created three Michelin-starred restaurants, and the onboard entertainment is the work of award-winning lyricist Tim Rice, who wrote the music to "Aladdin" and "The Lion King." 

Regent Seven Seas Explorer

This ship includes 375 suites, with its "top of the ship" residence a 3,000-square-feet behemoth. The suite includes two balconies, three walk-in closets, and a private spa and solarium. There are also 5,000 chandeliers and more than 2,000 pieces of artwork on board.

Scenic Eclipse

The  Scenic Eclipse from Scenic Luxury Cruises is an ultra-luxury mega yacht. It was designed with 114 all-veranda suites, ranging from 345 square feet to a staggering 2,659-square-foot two-bedroom penthouse suite. The ship also has a state-of-the art theater and a 5,900-square-foot spa sanctuary, as well as butler service for all guests. The Eclipse comes equipped with a custom-built, seven-seat submarine, offering underwater exploration for cruise passengers. 

Ecoventura M/V Origin

While not as big or grand as some other luxury ships, Ecoventura's MV Origin is one of the greenest and most luxurious ships to sail the Galapagos Islands. There are 10 deluxe staterooms, all with large windows providing unobstructed ocean views, and within are fine linens, climate controls, memory foam pillows, flat-screen televisions, a personal espresso machine, and rainfall showers. 

RMS Queen Mary 2

The top accommodations on The Queen Mary 2 cost more than $100,000 per person for the line's round-the-world trip. For that price, a cruiser gets a 2,500-square-foot cabin with two floors, his-and-hers bathrooms, a private gym, and a deck. This ship also has a full-scale planetarium and 3D cinema as well as one of the biggest wine cellars at sea. Even pets get the royal treatment, with a kennel and kennel master whose job is to pamper each animal.

Celebrity Flora

This all-suite so-called "luxury mega yacht" launched sails the Galapagos, which means it's allowed an occupancy of only 100 — each of whom will arrive at their Celebrity Flora stateroom with a personal suite attendant to help them unpack. Cabanas transform into double beds for sleeping under the stars (it's called "glamping,") and there's a custom stargazing lesson from one of the onboard naturalists. But there's also an observatory, library, and eco-conscious technology to keep travelers focused on the science.

Novorossiysk (Новоросси́йск") a Black Sea port city located along Tsemess Bay in Russia's Krasnodar Krai, with population around 240,000. By annual cargo shipping volume, Port Novorossiysk (locode RUNVS, officially Novorossiysk Sea Port/NSP) is ranked Europe's sixth-largest (after Rotterdam Netherlands , Antwerp Belgium , Hamburg Germany , Amsterdam Netherlands , Marseille France ). It is the Black Sea's largest and Russia's longest seaport by total docking line (~8,3 km / 5,2+ mi), having 90+ berths.

Tsemes/Novorossiysk Bay allows port access to vessels with macx draft 19 m (62 ft), while the Port's inner harbor can be accessed by ships with max draft 12,5 m (41 ft). At Port Novorossiysk are handled mainly large-capacity oil tankers (with max DWT-deadweight tonnage 250,000 tons), asl well as dry-bulk carriers and container ships . Among the exported cargoes are grain, oil and petroleum products, mineral fertilizers, timber, coal, food.

Port Novorossiysk is separated into several zones specializing in cargo shipping (3x terminals), passenger shipping, Oil Port (Sheskharis Terminal handles ~1/3rd of Russia's entire oil export, has 3x berths each 200 m / 656 ft in length), Timber Port, Grain Port (houses the Novorossiyskiy Grain Terminal & Grain Plant).

The Port also houses the Novorossiysk Shipyard (has drydocking capacity 60,000 DWT-tons), the Novorossiysk Naval Base (Russian Federation's Black Sea Navy's homeport) and the Aleksino Port Marina (with modern facilities for ship repairs, can accommodate vessels with max DWT 450 tons, including military vessels).

The city's current economy is based on the seaport's activities Novorossiysk is Russia's principal Black Sea port and the country's largest grain exporting port. This is also the Black Sea's busiest oil exporting port, with Tengiz Field pipeline's terminus located here. The city has well-developed steel and food processing industries. Large limestone quarries supply the local cement factories.

Novorossiysk is famous for being one of Russia's all 12 cities designated as "Hero City" (город-герой) - together with Leningrad ( St Petersburg ), Stalingrad ( Volgograd ), Odessa , Sevastopol , Moscow , Kiev , Kerch , Minsk, Tula, Murmansk , and Smolensk. The award was given for outstanding heroism during WW2 (1939-45).

These huge Great Lakes cruise ships have been traversing the Great Lakes for three years - and they’re still a sight to see.

The Viking Octantis debuted on the freshwater seas in 2022. The vessel was joined by its identical sister, the Viking Polaris, in 2023. The cruise line is now in its third season of Great Lakes itineraries.
