There are many things to do in Beppu when planning on our Beppu itinerary. During our visit to Beppu, we spend about one day visited the most popular Hell Valley. Moreover, we were staying one night in town to try on the onsen bath before proceeding to the next destination.

Once in Beppu, we headed to our accommodation to deposit our luggage. Our hotel, Nogamihonkan Ryokan is about 8 minutes walk from the JR Station. It is a traditional ryokan with a public hot spring bath. Besides, our room is clean and equipped with modern facilities.

Next, we headed our way to Kannawa by bus. We spent several hours touring the main sights and tried on some unique local dishes in Beppu. So read on our one day Beppu itinerary below.

Hand Bath In Front Of Beppu Station

There is also a semi-circular shape located outside of the station with a hand spa available for free beside the statue. It was nice for people who need to warm up their hands before leaving the station.

The popular tourist spot, Beppu is simmering with various hot spring attractions. One should visit the most popular Jigoku Meguri (地獄めぐり) which consist of 8 unique hot spring. There are Jigoku Onsen Ticket to access all the Jigoku entrance at 2000 yen. Worth it if you plan to visit at least 5 Jigoku. However, if you only have limited time, we recommended visiting the Umi-Jigoku and Chinoike-Jigoku. I feel that not necessary to visit all Jigoku. But it is also not a bad idea for first-time visitors to view on geothermal wonder.

  • Get The Jigoku Onsen Ticket from Klook ( ¥2000 To Access Seven Jigoku)

If you don’t walk to arrange transportation, consider joining the day tour for a hassle-free trip to Beppu. There are few options which coupled up with popular attraction in Kyushu. Click on below for more info:

Chinoike Jigoku

Chinoike Jigoku

Due to limited time, we decided to visit only the Umi-Jigoku and Chinoike-Jigoku among all the Beppu attraction. To ease on transport arrangement, we first headed to Chinoike-Jigoku among all the Jigoku Meguri.

From Beppu station, it was about 30 minutes of bus ride to get there. The Chinoike-Jigoku (血の池地獄 Blood Pond Hell) is famous for its reddish and orange thermal mud lake at high temperature that includes iron oxide and magnesium oxide.

View on Chinoike Jigoku From Above

It’s a pretty small attraction and you can finish with less than 20 mins to tour around. There is a trail that goes up and behind the pool which offers a very good photo opportunity. Added, there is also a footbath to try out for tired feet.

Beppu Travel Tips : If you are planning to visit Chinoike Jigoku and Tatsumaki Jigoku. The Tatsumaki Jigoku is a geyser spot and will erupted up at every 40 minutes. It is recommended to going there and check out the time for the geyser before heading to the Chinoike Jigoku. Once you know the time for the geyser, you can enter the Chinoike Jigoku, view the red hot pond that resembles a blood bath, enjoy the nice Japanese garden until the time for the geyser.

Getting There : From Beppu or Kannawa Bus Station, take bus #16 and #16A and get off at Chinoike-Jigoku-mae stop.

Umi-Jigoku Beppu National Scenic Spot

Next, we boarded the bus to Umijigoku-mae stop to Kannawa district. It is also the remaining six Jigoku located nearby. We visited the Umi-Jigoku (海地獄 Sea Hell) for its beautiful cobalt blue color hot spring pond.

Once entered, it was the lovely walk with trees, pond, fish pond and bridge in subtly decorated Japanese Garden. Continue pass through the souvenir shop, the grand volcanic hot steaming pool was awaiting us. It was so impressive, photogenic and quite a sight to see for me.

Umi Jigoku with Heavy Smoke

The Umi-Jigoku is the largest and most beautiful among all the eight Jigoku. The cobalt blue color steaming hot spring pond was spectacular. It was composed of a large amount of iron oxide in its 98 degrees high temperature. A lot of photo opportunities at every corner. We enjoy the experience of the sights and sulfur smell.

Umi Jigoku Beppu Must Visit Attraction

Though it wasn’t my first time to see a hot spring with colors, this is truly beautiful and amazing. The hot spring keep bubbled up with steam jet up. It was still very impressive to see the natural geothermal right in front of you.

Take your time slowly enjoy the park. Well-established souvenir shops were selling local snacks that fully utilized the hot spring steam. Try the hell steamed pudding, onsen egg, and Manjus and various of snack here. Remember to take a small towel for the footbath.

Hot Spring Steam Food: Jigokumushi Kobo Kannawa

Must Try Food in Beppu

Next, we walked to the Kannawa area for late lunch. Local people in Beppu has harnessed the naturally hot steam and developed it into Beppu special local dishes. The hell steam cuisine (Jigoku mushi, 地獄蒸し). Visitor can select their ingredient and cooked them with hot steam jetting out directly from the ground. This simple method can bring out the most original and true flavor of food.

There are many Hell Steam restaurant in Kannawa. We choose to dine in the most popular Jigoku Mushi Kobo (地獄蒸し工房鉄輪, Jigokumushi Kōbō Kannawa). It is the self-service restaurant and run by local volunteers. That’s mean you have the opportunity to try and prepare the hot steam food on your own.

Vegetable Set

Follow the well-organized flow and instruction. We have our self prepared hot steam cook. See our steam fish and vegetables set. We like the vegetables set especially the pumpkin taste so sweet even without any seasoning. Generally, the taste was light and you can opt to dip it with salt or soy sauce.

An interesting experience. One of the must-try food if you are looking for what to eat in Beppu.

Yunohana Goya

We went to Yunohana Goya for a leisure walk. There were straw-thatched huts in a hot spring area to collect the “Yunohana” onsen powder for bathing. It was formed when vapor gushing out from the underground in Yunohana Goya.

Growing of Onsen Crystal

We were allowing seeing how the onsen crystal was growing and collected from the little huts. A unique experience to see how the traditional method to collect the natural bath powder.

The whole area was full of rotten egg smell due to the sulfur. The hilly side with unique thatched huts were very picturesque. However, please take note on the sunset time. We were slightly rush as the sky get dark early during winter.

Getting there : From Kannawa Bus Stop, take the bus #5, #24, #41 to Jizoyumae (地蔵湯前). It is the bus stop located just beside Okamotoya Restaurant.

Okamotoya Restaurant

Our main purpose to Myoban onsen was to try on the original Jigoku-mushi Pudding. The Okamotoya restaurant (岡本屋売店 元祖地獄蒸しプリン) is the first inverted and selling the famous Jigoku-mushi Pudding in Beppu since 1988. It also serves other hot spring steamed specialties such as onsen eggs and udon, curry rice and so on. A great place if you look for what to eat in Beppu.

Jigoku-mushi Pudding from Okamotoya

We ordered the Jigoku-mushi Pudding for a quick snack. Although this hot spring steamed pudding is everywhere, but the pudding tastes different in each place. We like the Jigoku-mushi Pudding from Okamotoya. It has the right amount of caramel and rich in flavor. Not too sweet and come with slight bitterness and salty taste.

Inside Okamotoya

Enjoy your time and relax watching the steam rise into the sky, or gazing at the Yunohana-goya huts. We had enough rest inside the Okamotoya restaurant. Next, we boarded the bus back to the Beppu Bus Station.

Beppu Fireworks Festival 2024

The Beppu Fireworks Festival is a must-see summer event. It is held annually on either the last weekend of July or first weekend..

About Beppu

Beppu is famous for its various Jigoku or in English, hells. Don't be alarmed, this is not a place people are sent to be punished in Japan, but a cool place to visit that draws Japanese and foreign visitors alike. Judging by the amount of signs and literature in Korean, it is particularly popular with Japan's nearest neighbors.

A hell is basically a hot spring that you look at rather than get in, unless you feel like you could brace temperatures up to 100 degrees Celsius! I visited the most famous area, Beppu Jigoku Meguri.

You pay around 400 yen to enter one hell or 2000 yen for entry to all eight. I did the latter. There are red pools, blue pools, white pools, pools with bubbling brown mud and pools that spurt water. There is steam everywhere and bits of it do look quite hellish.

It was definitely an interesting place. In some ways it had a Disney feel or the feel of a 1970s theme park without the rides. One of my favorite hells was Tatsumaki Jigoku, the one that spurts boiling water and steam. I also liked Chinoike Jigoku, or as an English sign stated Bloody Hell Pond. Both of these hells were simple and were based around one basic pool. The restaurant at Chinoike Jigoku also did a great burger.

Some of the hells had animals you could look at, but for my liking they were in cages that were a bit small. It may have been the heat, but some of the animals almost looked a little lifeless and sad. I wouldn't let this put you off visiting though. It's a unique place.

There are other hells throughout the city and various hot springs that you can actually bathe in. If you're visiting Japan from overseas, you should go to a hot spring at least once.

I visited on a Tuesday, but as it was the last night of my trip, we headed into town to see what we could find in the way of nightlife. It turns out Beppu has quite a large foreign community, due to the International University within the city. We happened to stumble upon their summer leaving party in a bar called 68. There were probably people there from around 20 different countries. I think Beppu is the kind of place that could be fun and lively on a weekend...although I only visited on a Tuesday.

Soon after your arrival in this resort town , make your way over to the Hells of Beppu . Named for being a series of hot springs that are far too scalding to be bathed in, the sight of these steaming bodies of water are nonetheless this destination’s most stunning attraction.

More Attractions

The geothermal activity produced by the Hells of Beppu has made it possible for townsfolk to power their stoves without gas. This is demonstrated at the Steam Cooking Center , where dishes are made using the steam from the hot springs in the area.

This isn’t a typical restaurant; you’ll be required to cook your own food, though, you can buy prepackaged meals to cook in one of the steamers. Not sure what to do ? Volunteers stand by to assist first-timers in preparing their food in the way locals have done it for centuries.

Once you have finished seeing the Hells of Beppu, get away from the crowds for a couple of hours by visiting the Oita Fragrance Museum . Here, you will get a chance to learn about the process by which colognes, perfumes, and other scents are created.

Here, you are surrounded by the beauty of greenery and water, as it falls along moss-covered canyon walls. Located far from the throngs of tourists that crowd the hot springs of Beppu, this is the perfect place to come if you are seeking solace during a visit to the region.

The number one thing to do in Beppu is to explore the Hells of Beppu, duh!

These eight hot springs have been nicknamed ‘hells’ because of their extreme likeness to the hot and steamy imagery often associated with hell. However, they are quite heavenly to look at!

There are six hot springs situated close by to each other in Kannawa, whilst the other two are located a little further away. Each hot spring offers a unique theme and experience, so if you have time, we highly recommend you try and visit them all!

2. Take Photos of Chi-no-ike Jigoku

Chi-no-ike Jigoku Beppu Hells

Chi-no-ike Jigoku is one of the most popular hells of Beppu because of its unique colouring. If you were to pick only a handful to visit, definitely include Chi-no-ike Jigoku on your list.

You’d imagine most hot springs to be bright blue, right? Well, not Chi-no-ike Jigoku! This hot spring stands out, particularly because of its bright orange and red hue. Depending on the weather of the day, it can sometimes look almost like blood and thus is a fascinating attraction for those looking to take unique photos.

3. Take in Grand Views from Beppu Tower

Beppu Tower

In our opinion, one of the best ways to appreciate a beautiful city is from above, and you’ll find that Beppu Towers offers the most grandeur views of the city below. Witness where the edge of the city meets the blue of the sea in a quiet and serene setting.

That’s right, many people don’t realise it, but the hot springs in Beppu do more than just provide a stunning bathing experience and picturesque opportunities. They also function as a cooking mechanism too!

Jigoku Mushi Kobo

Head to Jigoku Mushi Kobo if you want to give this a go. Here, you can buy your own selection of fresh ingredients. The hot steam from the hot springs here can easily steam your food in no time! Simply place your food on the kama (Japanese vats available) and then let the onsen water underneath them heat the food.

This quirky experience must not be missed.

5. Try A Sand Bath

Beppu Sand Bath

Shoningahama Beach in Beppu offers the unique experience of having a bath right in the sand next to the waters!

The black sand here actually sits right above the bubbling spring waters, which then heats the sand on the surface. Visitors will come here just to be buried all the way up to their necks! The thermal properties of the heated-up sand are said to relax and rejuvenate the body and soothe aches and pains.

6. Experience Oita’s Karaage Chicken

Oita’s Karaage Chicken

A visit to Beppu would not be complete without trying the famous Oita karaage!  Oita’s karaage is a popular Japanese fried chicken dish that originates from this prefecture and it’s known for its crispy texture and rich umami flavor.

It is made by marinating small pieces of chicken in a mixture of soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and other seasonings, before coating them in potato starch and frying them until golden brown. Oita’s karaage is often served as a snack or as a side dish to accompany meals.

Beppu Park

Japan is known for its beautifully maintained parks and recreation areas, and Beppu Park is no exception.

If you happen to be visiting Beppu during springtime, Beppu Park is the premiere destination to witness the famous Japanese sakura blossoms bloom to life. The nostalgic atmosphere and serenity of the park are reminiscent of the beauty you’d see in Kyoto during the cherry blossom season.

During autumn, Beppu Park is awash with gorgeous koyo leaves that blanket the ground in fiery orange and red leaves.

The photo opportunities at this park are endless.

13. Check Out Tanabata Matsuri at the Neighbouring Oita City (August!)

Tanabata Festival Matsuri

The Tanabata Matsuri is a massive annual festival that’s held in Oita, the neighboring city to Beppu. If you happen to be visiting in August, we implore that you do not miss this exciting festival, because it is quite a feast for your eyes and mouths!

The festival itself is a summer festival that is dedicated to two star-crossed lovers. The entire city lights up with colourful streamers and structures that are seen throughout the streets across the three days.

On the last day, a gorgeous display of fireworks is put on for the viewing pleasure of all the visitors. It truly is a unique experience.

14. Explore Kifune Castle

Kifune Castle

Sitting atop the hills overlooking Beppu’s famous hot springs is Kifune Castle, a replica castle of an original castle that dates back many centuries.

Kifune Castle is a historical museum that features stunning art walls for you to pursue. There are tours that you can take to get a better understanding of the history and features of the castle, and they can also be taken in English.

The views on top of this castle are, of course, stunning, but the real treat here is the guardian statue that sits outside the castle. Nicknamed the Kimbai White Dragon King, it’s said that petting this reptile can bring you good luck and wealth.

The Perfect Beppu Itinerary: How to Spend One Day In Beppu

This page may contain  affiliate links which earn us a commission at no extra cost to you to support the site. Thank you!

This itinerary will show you how to spend one day in Beppu, a city where ancient practices and new amenities come together in perfect harmony.

On the eastern coast of Oita Prefecture, nestled by the sea, lays a city called Beppu. As the leaves change and the temperatures drop, large white plumes of steam will rise from the city’s 2,500 hot springs, which are collectively known as “ Beppu Hatto “.

These hot springs, or “ onsen ” as they are referred to in Japanese, are what makes Beppu the largest source of natural spring water in Japan. It’s the perfect destination to add to your Kyushu itinerary .

Whether you’re interested in trying delicious seafood and vegetables prepared with the ancient “Jigokumushi” method, testing out different hot springs, or setting out on a hiking trail that will take you through the sea of trees that blanket Mount Tsurumi, Beppu is the place for you.

Read on to see how to spend the perfect day in Beppu.

One Day in Beppu Itinerary

Here is how we’d recommend spending one day in Beppu:

1. Visit Hachiman Asami Shrine

Our day trip to Beppu begins with stepping back in time and a visit to Hachiman Asami Shrine . It was constructed in 1196 and has been guarded by enormous camphor trees known collectively as “ Meoto-sugi ” for over a millennium.

On New Year’s Day, hundreds of people from around Oita Prefecture come to Hachiman Asami Shrine to send their prayers to the gods and receive their fortunes, or “ omikuji “, which are available in English.

In addition to getting your fortune, I’d recommend trying the hot spring water called “ Mantaro Shimizu “. It is believed to have healing properties.

Hachiman Asami Shrine beppu

2. Explore Beppu Rakutenchi Amusement Park

Rakutenchi Amusement Park has been serving up family-friendly fun for the community of Beppu since 1929. The park has many attractions, including a small zoo, a summer-time water park, roller coasters, a suspension bridge , and scenic views of Beppu Bay.

You can see the park’s famous Flower Ferris Wheel (the only double-ferris wheel in all of Japan) at a distance on Mount Tateishi.

The best way to access Rakutenchi if you do not have a rental car is by mountain cable car. The recently upgraded cable cars are colourfully painted with cheerful primary colours and are free to ride.

After spending time at Rakutenchi, you still have a chance to relax if you stop by Zekkei no Yu , which is the cherry on top of this retro theme park.

3. Hike up Mount Tsurumi

If you’re searching for more scenic views of Beppu, look no further than Mount Tsurumi. This is also the source of all of Beppu’s hot springs.

There are routes available for hikers of all levels of experience, from beginner to pro. If you choose to hike in the spring, you’ll have the chance to see thousands of cherry blossoms and Kyushu azaleas on the face of Mount Tsurumi .

The most commonly recommended route is to start at the Beppu Ropeway Station. However, if you would like to try the more challenging 1,375-meter sea-to-summit ascent to Mount Tsurumi, the journey will take around four hours . If you do this, be extra prepared and bring enough water.

The official starting point for the trail is at Matogahama Park , where you will see a sign marking the path that will take hikers to the summit.

4. Ride the Beppu Ropeway

Opened in 1962, Beppu Ropeway is the largest ropeway in all of Kyushu. Round-trip fare for one adult costs 1,700 yen. The trip from Beppu Ropeway Station to the summit of the 1,375-meter volcano via the ropeway takes around 10 minutes.

From the observation deck, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of Beppu Bay, Oita City, and even Shikoku on a clear day.

The sea of trees covering Mount Tsurumi change colour from season to season, so you can’t go wrong when it comes to choosing the best season to visit Beppu Ropeway!

If you visit the ropeway between mid-October to the end of November, you can observe Mount Tsurumi’s beautiful autumn foliage from high up in the cable car.

5. Take the Jigoku Seven Hells Tour

Beppu’s most famous tour is the seven jigoku or “hells”. The tour takes you through seven different hot springs that are too hot to bathe in and kitschy attractions that are endearing and very popular amongst families with young children. The tour starts with the umi-jigoku or “Sea Hell” and ends with oniyama-jigoku or “Demon Mountain Hell.”

The best way to experience the full tour is to purchase tickets in advance using tour companies like Bokai bus tour .

For more information on how to purchase tickets and see a map of the Jigoku Seven Hells Tour, please visit the Beppu City Official Tourism site .

6. Admire Kifune Castle

Kifune Castle is unlike most castles you will find across Japan. Rebuilt on private land in 1957, the present-day structure is modelled after the original 880-year-old castle.

For only 300 yen, visitors can access a hilltop garden and a shrine inside the castle. There’s also an albino python that has been deemed the official guardian of Kifune Castle that guests can pet for good luck.

Not far from Kifune Castle is the Yukemuri Observation Deck , where many visitors travel to snap a photo of Beppu’s iconic skyline. You can also get 360-degree views of Beppu City’s gorgeous scenery from the second story of Kifune Castle.

heads up

Kifune Castle offers guided tours only, but they are available in English and Japanese.

7. Visit Kita-Kouka Shotengai

From thrift stores to handmade to speciality coffee shops, this off-the-beaten-path location is a must-visit when spending one day in Beppu. The Kita-Kouka Shotengai, which loosely translates means “ under the train shops “, is a rare and nostalgic shopping experience found only in Beppu City.

Some shops have been renovated, like the highly recommended Sun Cafe , while others still retain their Heisei-era blueprint, like Kissaten Kei . We cannot recommend visiting this shopping mall, which is conveniently located within walking distance of Beppu Station.

shopping mall in beppu

8. See Beppu Tower

At 100 meters tall (328 ft), Beppu Tower is fun to visit during the day and at nighttime. At 55 meters up, visitors can enjoy views of Mount Tsurumi from the fifth-floor observation deck.

Like Osaka’s Tsutenkaku, the tower is made up of a latticework of iron with large Japanese characters etched on the side in neon light. Beppu Tower is one of six “brothers” designed by architect Tachu Naito, who also designed the aforementioned Tsutenkaku as well as Japan’s most iconic structure – Tokyo Tower.

Beppu Tower was completed in 1956 at the end of the Beppu Onsen Tourism Industrial Expo and has been a vital part of Beppu’s tourism industry ever since. To access this National Registered Tangible Cultural Property, simply hop on a city bus at Beppu Station or head east and walk for around ten minutes.

9. Enjoy Beppu’s Hot Springs

Hot springs in Japan are most often referred to as “ onsen “. Traditionally, hot springs are separate facilities that the public is free to use for a small entrance fee, but newer hotels will often have a hot spring as part of their facilities.

The baths and changing rooms are separated and the baths themselves will vary in terms of size and temperature.

You may have heard that many Japanese onsens do not accept tattoos. While this is partially true, there are places like Beppu that are known for being one of the most tattoo-friendly places in all of Japan ! If you have tattoos but aren’t sure what to expect, check out our guide about tattoos in Japan .

When in Beppu, here are three onsen I recommend trying:

  • Hyotan Onsen : A traditional Japanese hot spring that has been a part of the Beppu community for over 100 years. Hyotan Onsen boasts Japan’s only three-star Michelin restaurant , sand baths, and private baths that are tattoo-friendly. Points of interest near Hyotan Onsen include the Jigoku Seven Hells, Yukemuri Observation Deck, and Kifune Castle.
  • Nageshi Onsen : According to local legend, after a hot spring was discovered someone secretly built a wooden structure that later became Nageshi Onsen. Thus, this onsen that is located near Hachiman Asami Shrine has been nicknamed, the “One Night Hot Spring.” Be sure to bring your own amenities if you plan on visiting this historic hot spring.
  • Koudei Onsen : The Koudei Onsen is part of the Bouzu Jigoku or “ monk hell “. This mineral-enriched mud bath is one of the only hot springs that guests are permitted to bathe in on the Jigoku Hell Tour. Entry to the mud bath costs around 900 yen for an adult, while young children are not permitted to enter for their safety.

10. Have a Relaxing Stay in Beppu

When it comes to choosing the right accommodation, Beppu has a wide array of options thanks to its longstanding status as a hot spring city. Whether you’re looking for a traditional inn with vintage charm, a facility that boasts modern amenities, or an affordable guest house, Beppu will have a place for you.

Here are our recommendations for a relaxing stay in Beppu:

  • Galleria Midobaru : For those who want to have a luxury experience while still enjoying sightseeing in Beppu, then look no further than Galleria Midobaru. Galleria Midobaru offers king-sized rooms containing large baths that provide guests with a private, onsen-like experience.
  • Suginoi Hotel : This luxury four-star hotel truly has it all: a bowling alley, a waterpark, a garden with modern art, restaurants, and more. Suginoi has not just one but two hot onsens. In January 2023, Suginoi Hotel revealed the SORA KAN infinity bath, which offers gorgeous rooftop views of Beppu City.
  • Beppu Host el U&T: This top-rated hostel is located in a central location close to Beppu Tower. Amenities include washing and drying units, a communal kitchen, a gaming area complete with Japanese comic books, Wi-Fi, and much more. Thanks to their friendly, English-speaking staff, Beppu Hostel U&T is an excellent choice for travellers looking for a cheaper alternative in Beppu.

What is Beppu Known for?

Beppu is known for onsen , or “ hot springs “. There are so many hot springs in Beppu that this small city in Oita is the second-largest source of hot spring water in the entire world (the number one spot goes to Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, USA).

Beppu has also recently become known for food tourism. The cooking method of using steam from a hot spring to prepare ingredients known as “ Jigokumushi ” originated in Beppu during the Edo period.

You can try this dish at a traditional inn or “ryokan” such as the Yanagiya Inn , which is located on Beppu’s Kannawa Ginza Street. Bathing in an onsen is one of the best things to do in Japan – and Beppu is one of the best places to do so.

beppu onsen in kyushu

How to Get to Beppu?

The best route to get to Beppu is to go directly from Fukuoka by train or highway bus. The terminal for the highway bus is next to Hakata Station, the largest train station in Kyushu.

A one-way trip from Hakata to Oita City is 2.5 hours and costs around 4,000 yen. However, if you would prefer to take a train, the commute is a little over 2 hours and costs around 6,500 yen.

Beppu is located 10 minutes away by local train or taxi from Oita City. The JR Kyushu Pass has recently increased ticket prices, so I’d only recommend purchasing the pass if you are looking to add Beppu as part of an itinerary for a trip around the whole island of Kyushu. Our 7-day Kyushu itinerary , for example, shows you all seven prefectures in one week.

How Many Days Do You Need in Beppu?

I recommend spending a minimum of one day in Beppu .

While it varies from person to person, most people in Japan generally prefer to spend a night or two at a Japanese inn , especially if the inn includes a hot spring.

Most people visit the hot springs late at night or early in the morning, so an overnight stay is the most common recommendation. If you are coming for the Beppu Hatto Onsen Festival , when smaller onsens will waive their fees during this week-long celebration, it might be beneficial to stay more than one night.

Is Beppu Worth Visiting?

Yes, Beppu is 100% worth visiting ! In addition to being one of the most popular destinations in Kyushu, Beppu is full of truly unique attractions. It’s the perfect place to get familiar with Japanese hot spring culture. We cannot recommend visiting Beppu enough.

Which is Better, Yufuin or Beppu?

It depends. Yufuin is a popular destination in Oita due to its easy access (just one hour by bus) from Beppu and Oita Station. Like Beppu, Yufuin is an excellent place to enjoy hot springs and experience staying at a traditional Japanese inn.

If you’re looking to add Yufuin to your Kyushu itinerary , there are trains available from Kumamoto to Yufuin .

Conclusion – Beppu Itinerary

When it comes to spending one day in Beppu, you can’t go wrong with choosing what to see and where to go.

There’s nothing better than seeing colourful foliage atop Mount Tsurumi from a cable car or soaking in an authentic 100-year-old hot spring. We hope that our guide has inspired you to consider visiting Beppu on your next trip to Japan.

beppu japan travel guide

Largest amount of gushing water in Japan. Beppu, a town of hot springs.

Beppu is number one in Japan in terms of both the amount of gushing water and the number of sources. The amount of water and number of springs are far superior to any other place in Japan. Beppu boasts a very long history and was mentioned as having life-saving hot spring in the Iyo-no-Kuni Fudoki, compiled at the beginning of the 8th century. There are records of sanatoriums built for wounded soldiers in Beppu, Kannawa, and Hamawaki during the Kamakura period.

8 diverse and profound hot spring resorts: Beppu Hatto

There are eight hot spring resorts in Beppu City, called "Beppu Hatto". Each of them has different characteristics, such as the quality of the springs, making it possible to enjoy a "hot spring tour" just within Beppu City. Beppu is truly a hot spring wonderland.

Although Beppu Onsen (hot springs) was first mentioned in literature at the beginning of the 8th century, it was not until the Edo period that it really attracted notice. In the Meiji period, Beppu Bay was prepared as a port and the railways such as the Nippo Line and Oita Betsudai began operating. Modern drilling techniques were also introduced, and the number of hot spring sources, hot spring facilities and hot spring inns increased. In the Taisho and Showa periods, the hot spring facilities were also enriched. Takegawara Onsen, a public hot spring with wooden tiled roofs which symbolizes Beppu is visited by many tourists from Japan and abroad.

The name "Hamawaki" is derived from the appearance of hot springs gushing out from the beach and is considered the birthplace of Beppu Onsen. In the early Kamakura period, Asami Hachiman shrine was established, and in the Edo period, Hamawaki area developed into a Monzen town with a port and became a strategic point for land and sea transportation. The quaint Japanese inns still remain today, as well as remnants of the geisha quarter of the Meiji and Taisho eras. There are some baths and a training room at Yutopia Hamawaki run by the city. You can bathe in a hot spring and exercise there according to your health condition.

Natural sand bath has been a specialty since olden days. It is recorded in the Hokoku travel guide of the Edo period that "there is a hot spring of salty water in Satoya, which is also known as “Matekamegawa Village." This tells us that abundant hot springs have gushed out toward the coast since that time. Even today, the city-run Beppu Beach Sand Bath located in a corner of Shoningahama Park, is one of the most popular tourist spots. You can enjoy the unique experience of being buried up to your neck buried in sand heated by the hot spring while listening to the sound of the waves on the beach.

beppu japan travel guide

Here you can enjoy the streets Kannawa Onsen, which has the best atmosphere of the eight hot spring villages, where steam rises spots all over the place. One of the specialties is jigokumushi, which is eaten by steaming vegetables with abundant hot gases, many of Kannawa's original hot spring ryokan remain where you can enjoy hot spring healing while enjoying the meal of jigokumushi. There are also many public baths and footbaths. You can enjoy the unique mushiyu the features medicinal herbs spread on the floor heated by the steam of the hot spring that is said to have been founded by Ippen Shonin.

beppu japan travel guide

The Kankaiji Onsen was discovered in the Kamakura period. The Bungo Kunishi, written in the Edo period, says "it is extremely difficult to get to Kankaiji Temple, but the scenic view is so spectacular that it attracts many visitors." Nowadays there is a large resort hotel typical of Beppu and it has become a popular resort destination visited by many tourists. The large open-air bath that features the scenic view is also popular with tourists.

beppu japan travel guide

Blessed with abundant onsen, Horita Onsen has been an important transportation hub leading to Yufuin, Hita, and Dazaifu since ancient times, and has become a place of relaxation for travelers. It flourished as a onsen resort during the Edo period. Even today, sulfuric air flows out of the rice paddies and valleys, and abundant onsen are supplied to the city. In addition to the bright indoor bath, there is also a quaint open-air bath at the city-operated Horita Onsen. There is also a resting room with a good view.

beppu japan travel guide

The history of this hot spring is so long that it is said that Emperor Daigo (895 AD) and Emperor Go-Reizen (1044 AD) were cured by the water as a treatment for illness, and it is still known as "wound healing hot spring.” In the Edo period, brushwood fossils were found there, so it came to be called "Shibaseki". The municipal Shibaishi Onsen also includes an open-air bath surrounded by trees in the mountains. As you relax, you will be healed not only by the hot springs, but also by the view and the voices of birds.

This area was the primary spot for obtaining alum in the Edo period. The Myoban Onsen developed as a spa along with with the prosperity of alum gathering business. Steam rises from the thatched hut called Yu-no-Hanagoya, providing the area with the smell of sulfur. The entire area is full to the brim with hot spring atmosphere. There are many acidic hot springs such as sulfur springs; it is also called Shampoo-no-Yu, because it makes your skin smooth. Many tourists also visit the area for mud baths that beautify the skin and jigokumushi steamed pudding.

Beppu Jigoku Tour

For more than a thousand years, steam jets, hot mud and hot water have gushed out of the Kannawa and Kamegawa areas. In the old days, you couldn’t go there. These areas therefore came to be called "hell” by the locals. Nowadays, it’s not a scary place, but rather one of the tourist attractions unique to Onsen Wonderland Beppu. Enjoy the wonderland created by the steam jets, hot mud, the source and nature, and the things you can experience there.

The high-temperature steam quickly steams the ingredients, so the flavor of the ingredients is condensed. Since the hot spring minerals are also infused, the steamed dish also has a subtle hot spring scent. It is healthy and delicious, so it is perfect for breakfast or a meal during a hot spring treatment.

Beppu Reimen: cold noodle soup

beppu japan travel guide

It is said that Beppu cold noodles began after World War II, when people who moved from Manchuria started making and eating Korean-style cold noodles in Beppu. As time passed, Korean-style cold noodles have evolved into the Beppu style. The ingredients for the noodles have changed, the soup has become Japanese-style, and it became common to put the roasted beef and the kimchi made with regular cabbage, ultimately developing into today’s unique Beppu Reimen.

Known as a local gourmet food of Oita Prefecture, toriten, or tempura fried chicken, is said to have originated from the dish made by the first restaurant in Oita Prefecture, established in the city of Beppu during the Taisho period. It is probably based on Taiwanese tempura fried chicken. It is usually eaten with ponzu (mixture of soy sauce and vinegar) and mustard, but there are also restaurants where you can eat it with the original sauce.

beppu japan travel guide

By the way, the number of authentic spice curry restaurants has increased recently.

Because there are many foreign students and tourists from overseas, there are also many restaurants that serve multi-national cuisine such as Thai, Sri Lankan, and Korean.

The fresh seafood dishes caught in the Beppu Bay right in front of you are also definitely worth trying.

So what would we recommend?

Honestly, it's difficult to recommend a specific dish because there are so many delicious things to eat in Beppu city that it's overwhelming when asked for a recommendation.

Sometimes fresh, sometimes nostalgic.

When you walk around the city, the faint scent of the hot spring tickles your nose, and you may come across locals carrying "ofuro" sets for entering the hot spring onsen. You can also enjoy the charm of a hot spring resort with its nostalgic atmosphere. In the Beppu Onsen and Hamawaki Onsen areas, you can encounter retro buildings and shops. There are stylish Western-style modern architecture, the variety stores and cafes that utilize the building that was previously a pleasure quarter of the red-light district, cafes that retain the atmosphere of the Showa era, cute tile-walled public baths, and even Japan's oldest wooden arcade. It's not uncommon to find charming buildings and shops when a cat invites you into an alley while exploring these back streets.

Beppu bamboo crafts are said to have originated when Emperor Keiko visited Beppu and his attendant discovered that there was a lot of high-quality bamboo and made rice bowls of bamboo. Surprisingly, it has a history of about 2000 years. The advanced techniques that have been nurtured and accumulated over a long history are now highly regarded in terms of art. Hot Spring Baths (Onsen)

beppu japan travel guide

Beppu is one of the most famous hot spring resorts in Japan. The city is blessed by as many as eight different springs, named Beppu Onsen, Kannawa Onsen, Myoban Onsen, Kankaiji Onsen, Hamawaki Onsen, Kamegawa Onsen, Horita Onsen and Shibaseki Onsen, each featuring public baths and ryokan with bathing facilities. Together they produce more hot spring water than any other onsen resort in the country.

What sets Beppu apart from other onsen resorts is not only its abundance of thermal waters, but also the wide range of bath types that can be enjoyed there. Aside from conventional hot water baths, Beppu offers sand baths where bathers are buried in naturally heated sand, steam baths that are heated by the steam of a hot spring, and mud baths which are basically muddy hot water baths.

Below in a list of some of Beppu's best baths. More baths can be found in nearby Yufuin .
