The Harry Potter Warner Bros Studio Tour is a must-see for any fan of the beloved film series. Located just outside of London, the tour takes visitors behind the scenes of the Harry Potter films, offering a unique glimpse into the magic of movie-making. As a lover of all things Harry Potter, I’ve written my experience in this accessible guide to Warner Bros Studios London.

Warner Bros Studios London: Harry Potter Studio Tour Guide

Sassy wearing a knee long black dress with small white flowers, smiling at the camera and holding Ida's leash. Ida is sitting by her side, on the right hand side. Behind Sassy there is the entrance to Harry Potter Studio.

Upon arriving at the studio, visitors are greeted by a giant model of Hogwarts Castle, setting the stage for the magical adventure to come. From there, visitors can explore the Great Hall, complete with authentic sets, costumes, and props from the films. The attention to detail is truly impressive, and fans will love seeing their favorite scenes come to life before their eyes.

One of the highlights of the tour is the chance to see the actual Hogwarts Express steam engine and carriages used in the films. Visitors can even step aboard and have their photo taken in the carriage just like Harry and his friends.

Another must-see exhibit is the Gryffindor common room and dormitory, which has been meticulously recreated down to the last detail. Visitors can even see Harry’s small, cramped cupboard under the stairs, which served as his bedroom in the first film.

The dorm in the Griffindor House, with a four poster single bed with red curtains around it, and a red duvet. Near it, on the left, there is the wizard uniform hanging

In addition to the sets and costumes, the tour also includes special effects demonstrations, showing visitors how the filmmakers brought some of the most iconic scenes in the series to life. From the Quidditch matches to the epic battle at the Ministry of Magic, visitors can learn all about the tricks and techniques used to create these memorable moments.

But the Harry Potter Warner Bros. Studio Tour is not just for die-hard fans – even those who are only casually familiar with the films will find plenty to enjoy. The tour is full of interactive exhibits and hands-on activities, making it a fun and engaging experience for all ages.

One of the most popular exhibits is the creature effects workshop, where visitors can see how the filmmakers brought to life some of the series’ most memorable creatures, including the giant spiders and the majestic Hungarian Horntail dragon.

Blind Girl Adventures at the Harry Potter Studio Tours

Sassy Walking through a large iron gate. She is wearing a black dress with small flowers and is holding Ida with her right hand. Behind her, on the alley she is coming from, there is smoke.

I have been to the Harry Potter studio tours three times, and I promise it WON’T be the last.  I thought I would share my experiences as a blind person going there.

The first time I went to Harry Potter studio tours was back in 2013, I was registered blind at this point but still had a lot of residual vision. This meant that unless it was the intricate details, I could pretty much see the entire tour, and let me tell you it was breathtaking.

As an avid Harry Potter fan, it lived up to everything I dreamed of and more!

My friend and I took the shuttle bus from Watford train station, and requested audio description headsets. The audio headsets were a mixture of explanations of the visual details of the props and sets, along with trips and interviews from the cast and crew who put together the entire Harry Potter film franchise. I suspect we were there well over three hours being absorbed and mesmerised by the design, costumes, sets and the incredible audio description.

I even got to ride a broom using a green screen! If there wasn’t an entire  line of people watching me, I probably would have started yelling something A  along  the lines of: ll”Yer A wizard Sassy!”

Alas, I’m still waiting for my Hogwarts acceptance letter. I know, it doesn’t matter that I’m in my 30s.

This is when I tried Butterbeer for the first time, and I was absolutely appalled! It’s essentially cream soda with butterscotch flavourings. Not remotely what J. K. Rowling described within the Harry Potter books, for starters it was cold, and secondly what heathens like cream soda?!

Two plastic glasses filled with butterbeer, a brown liquid with a white cream on top.

I bought some strawberry honeycomb, and Bertie bots every flavour beans: as a keepsake. And if you’re wondering? Yes, I still have the unopened box today sitting on my bookshelf!

If you’ve ever read the Harry Potter books or watched the films with audio description you will know how much detail has been put together to bring the wizarding world to life. These are the real props, costumes, designs and sets used throughout the 10 year Harry Potter film. I promise if you go as A blind person, or sighted, you will have the best time!

My second visit to the Harry Potter studio tour in 2018 was as a totally blind person, accompanied by Grant and my gorgeous guide dog Ida!

Grant drove us to the Leavesden studios, and we were able to park at the front thanks to my blue badge.  During this  adventure  I was given a real hands-on experience! Rebecca, a member of staff, gave me a one-on-one audio described tour where I was allowed to touch the props! See, sometimes being blind has its perks! I’ve got to touch/hold many props, but my three favourites were Lord Voldemort’s wand, Bellatrix Lestrange’s dagger and Luna  Lovegood’s leg moulds (as she went barefoot in the forbidden forest). Rebecca was so knowledgeable and you could tell she loved Harry Potter, almost more than I do! This  truly was a magical experience and I came away with way more knowledge about the behind-the-scenes, that I ever knew possible!

A staircase supported by small columns which look Roman. Above the staircase there are a lot of paintings of different wizards. Below, there is an exhibition with costumes from the movie.

As a massive Harry Potter geek, there was a little bit of sadness that I could no longer see the beauty of the sets, and the props or  life-size model scale.

I think as a blind person; if you’ve ever had Sight, and lost it.  Especially if you have seen these things before you will potentially reminisce that the touch tour was beyond words, one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever had in my life!

One on one tours cost more but if you have a sighted companion, you can purchase a carer ticket (essentially buy one get one free) and I think this is a wonderful way to enjoy it with someone else.

Here is where I tried Butterbeer ice cream for the first time. If you love butterscotch flavour and super creamy ice cream, this is the one for you! We also went through the forbidden Forest, and  got to sit in Hogwarts express – re-enacting the scene from the Dementor  on the Hogwarts express. Unfortunately me Hogwarts express is extremely narrow and has steps leading up to it, so if you are a wheelchair user this would not be accessible to you, and in this instance Rebecca waited on the platform with Ida as Grant and I reenacted the scene and gave Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint A run for their money!

A wooden table filled with different cakes and desserts. Along the plates there are small white mice arranged in a row, like they are following each other. The cakes have different shapes: one is a rabbit on top of a hat, another one is made from pumpkins on top of each other.

Rebecca  was super attentive, didn’t rush us in anyway  and showed us where all the accessible bathrooms were, and offered Ida some water.

My most recent blind girl visit to Harry Potter studio tours was in 2021, honestly just to go and experience the Gringott’s  set! Grant, Ida   and I took our sweet time going through the Making of Harry Potter, we either spoke to several staff members’ positions throughout the entire exhibition, and got a super cool insight into the jobs they do, and what their favourite part of the studio tours were!

The Gringott’s set was absolutely phenomenal, more realistic than anything I could have imagined, my  only negative is that I didn’t get to see it with eyes that worked.

I don’t want to spoil the surprise for anyone but  Gringott’s is bloody fabulous!

At this time of our visit Covid procedures were still implemented, so unfortunately I could not access an audio description  handset, or receive a one on one touch tour. I believe that it is now something that is back up and running for visually impaired visitors to enjoy.

Harry Potter Studio Tour accessibility: walking in a wizardry wonderland

Photo of Disability Horizons

If you’re a Harry Potter fan, then there is no better and more enchanted place to be than Harry Potter Studio Tour at Warner Bros. Studios, London, whatever the time of year. But its magic is amplified at Christmas. Visually impaired wheelchair user, Emma Purcell, who has visited Harry Potter Studio Tour numerous times, recently got to visit at Christmas. Find out how accessible she found it.

I’ve grown up with the wizarding world of Harry Potter since the age of three. There is no other book series that I have loved as much as this one, and I have never seen a film franchise of a book be so successful.

The captivating words of J.K Rowling inspired me to become a writer. I have read the books and watched the films far too many times. I would count myself as a Harry Potter guru.

As a journalist, my dream interview would be with J.K Rowling herself.

Bringing J.K Rowling’s words to life, the Harry Potter Studio Tour at Warner Bros. Studios near London was first opened to the public in 2012. I was lucky enough to visit it twice that year.

But, this year, I got the chance to go at Christmas time, with all the decorations and snow. I also got to see sets, props and interactive experiences that were not there previously.

Harry Potter Studio Tour accessibility

Unfortunately, due to my disabilities, there were some limitations. On my second visit in 2012, I was able to hold and feel a few props – Tom Riddle’s diary, the Prophecy glass ball and the love potions from Weasley’s Wizarding Wheezes in Diagon Alley.

However, when I asked a member of staff if this was possible to do again, he said that they were no longer providing that service. Very disappointing.

There was the option of a guided tour with an audio headset, which you need to book in advance. For me, I felt it would be difficult to keep up. Plus, having headphones on would have meant it wasn’t very sociable.

There were also a few areas where there is no wheelchair access, which was frustrating.

Harry Potter Studio Tour at Christmas

My highlights were the Forbidden Forest, the Hogwarts Express train and visiting my favourite character, Dobby the house-elf.

Model of Harry Potter manor covered in snow at Universal

Although I couldn’t see much in the Forbidden Forest as it was so dark, the sounds and lighting made it feel very eerie and spooky. I could hear the scuttling of spiders, Aragog, the largest spider moving, and the sound and flashes of thunder and lightning.

The Hogwarts Express train was amazing. Its red colour looked a lot brighter and bolder than on screen. A crew member told me than an old man visiting the studio tour had remembered riding the exact train when he was young. I never knew that it was an old passenger steam train that was actually in use.

I was somewhat heavy-hearted, however, to discover that I couldn’t access any of the train carriages. I was told that inside they had recreated some scenes with sweets, cloaks and luggage. I would have loved to have seen it for myself.

On the platform, I did get to hold the trolley that goes through the barrier, which was cool. There was also a small shop selling merchandise.

I got to feel some of the wands on sale. I was surprised at how many different shapes and sizes there were.

My highlights of Harry Potter

During my visit, I was determined to be reunited with my fictional friend Dobby. He was so high up in a glass cabinet I had to raise my chair. For some reason, he had his eyes partially closed, which was saddening to see.

Next to him, there was an interactive CGI Dobby. People could stand on a mat and make movements and Dobby would copy them. I gave it a go but I don’t think he liked my wheelchair. He looked like he was having a seizure or having a spastic attack – I think he has cerebral palsy too!

Model of Dobby at Harry Potter Studio Tour

Other favourite parts included the mechanical Buckbeak the Hippogriff, who bows to you, and the mechanical Whomping Willow tree that hits the boot of the Weasley’s Ford Anglia car with a branch.

Finally, let’s not forget the festive aspects. In the Great Hall, there were numerous tall Christmas trees and Christmas puddings on the long tables.

Outside there was a device that created a snow shower, which meant I got covered in snow on – probably for the first and last time this year.

On the large model of the Hogwarts castle, snow was all over the school grounds. This brought a wintry, festive feel to the scenery. But I did have one thought while admiring it: how do they remove the snow in the new year?

Warner Bros. Studio Tour Sponsors Guide Dogs In Training to Improve Accessibility

by Alyssa McHugh · Published June 8, 2024 · Updated June 8, 2024

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter has partnered with the charity Guide Dogs to improve accessibility for visitors who are blind or visually impaired. The Studio Tour , which has welcomed guide dogs since it first opened in 2012, has sponsored three adorable guide dogs in training – a black Labrador, a yellow Labrador, and a golden retriever. Progress reports on the puppies, named after our favorite Harry Potter trio – Harry, Ron, and Hermione – will be given to the studio to follow their developmental journey.

Through our consultation, advice, and training, we hope to encourage change across the UK attractions industry to become more accessible for people with sight loss.

Through working with Guide Dogs, the Studio Tour has added a designated toilet space for guide dogs to use outside and is working on offering signage iPads to magnify signs and descriptions. Guide Dogs will provide Studio Tour staff with online training resources on best practices for guiding visitors with sight loss around the experience. These resources are just the first step in the training program, followed by in-person training sessions for team members. Over the next 12 months, further implementations will be added to improve accessibility.

A truly magical day...

Visit date: September 2015

The Warner Bros. Studio Tour, or Harry Potter World, as I like to call it has really thought about the people who are visiting it, almost everything is wheelchair accessible and no-one can feel left out visiting here. Audio guides are available to everyone, have touch screens and are so easy to use. If that doesn't suit, you can arrange to have a Braille guide or even (on certain days) a British Sign Language tour guide. These lovely folks also allow guide dogs, hearing dogs and medical alert dogs inside too. There is so much to see it is really an experience not to miss.

Transport & Parking

I arrived at the studio by car and was delighted to see so many parking bays for disabled access, the staff in the parking lot were really friendly and welcoming and directed us to the next available space. From what I understand if you come by train there are regular shuttle buses from the local station, Watford Junction, all of which are wheelchair accessible.

If you are collecting your tickets upon arrival there are several booths from which to do so, one of which is lowered for ease of access for wheelchair users. The front entrance has a level access and this is continuous throughout most of the tour. The exceptions are the entrance to the great hall and Diagon Alley which are both on a slight incline. At the end of the tour (I wont spoil the surprise) there is an area which has ramps for wheelchairs to descend. There are rest spots throughout however, if necessary staff are also happy to provide visitors with a collapsible stool.

Toilet facilities are clearly delineated, with the disabled toilets having good accessibility and room inside if you need someone with you.

All the staff I met and talked to were so friendly and helpful, it really helped to make it a truely magical experience.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

Some of the attractions are not currently wheelchair accessible such as the Hogwarts express, the Hogwarts bridge and the Knight bus however all of these were working props in the film and as such were not built for wheelchair access. They exteriors can still be viewed, but interior access is currently impossible. I doubt however this would seriously detract from your experience.

The Visual Pulse Of London

Warner bros. studio tour london and guide dogs establish a partnership set to lead the way for accessibility across uk visitor attractions.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London and charity Guide Dogs have announced a year-long partnership which aims to bring best practice accessibility to the Studio Tour for people who are blind or visually impaired. The home of filmmaking magic hopes to lead the way for UK visitor attractions and encourage the industry to become more inclusive.

To mark the start of the partnership, through the Name a Puppy scheme Warner Bros. Studio Tour London has sponsored three adorable guide dog puppies in training – a black Labrador, yellow Labrador and a golden retriever. Named after the trio of leading characters in the iconic film series – Gryffindor house members Harry, Ron and Hermione – the Studio Tour will receive progress updates throughout each puppy’s development.

Studio Tour’s contribution will provide vital support for the three puppies as they embark on their remarkable journey, covering essential expenses including training, food, and veterinary care. This support is crucial during this pivotal time in their development and journey as they aspire to become life changers.

With 250 people in the UK* starting to lose their sight every day, the partnership will see the Studio Tour introduce various initiatives over the next 12 months and cement its commitment to developing inclusive policies for its team members and visitors.

The Studio Tour has welcomed guide and assistance dogs since they opened in 2012, with existing policies and guides in place to support those with sight loss or visual impairment, such as the availability of audio descriptive tours upon request. Through the partnership, further changes have been made to enhance the visitor experience.

Working closely with Guide Dogs Head of Children, Young People and Families, Kerry Kernan and Head of Accessibility Alex Pepper, the Studio Tour has made improvements to its spending area – a designated toilet space for guide dogs to use outside – within the attraction grounds. Additionally, they are working towards introducing signage iPads which team members can offer to people with a visual impairment to hold over signs and descriptions in order to magnify them.

Guide Dogs will provide the Studio Tour’s team members with online training resources to teach them best practices when helping visitors with visual impairment. It will cover topics such as how to approach someone with sight loss, navigate narrow or busy spaces, steps and doorways, where to take a seat and the best areas for guide dogs to rest within the Studio Tour.

Team members will also learn how to safely guide someone with sight loss with confidence, skill and empathy and also the power of description, and how all of the senses can be used to bring the experience to life for people with sight loss.

The online training will be part of a wider programme rolling out which will include in-person training sessions for team members later in the year. There are also further exciting activities and changes planned for the next 12 months, all working towards improving accessibility for those with sight loss visiting the Studio Tour.

Geoff Spooner, SVP and General Manager at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London says, “We love welcoming everyone to the Studio Tour to step behind the scenes of their favourite Harry Potter moments and discover how they were brought to life through the magic of filmmaking. Our partnership with Guide Dogs marks our steadfast commitment to become a best practice example of accessibility for those with sight loss in UK attractions. We also hope to drive change throughout the industry that makes a real difference.”

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

Taylor Swift Edinburgh concerts cause seismic activity

After creating seismic activity at Taylor Swift concerts in California and Washington last year, Swifties have done it again — this time in Edinburgh. Seismologists at the British Geological Study have recognized Swift’s record-breaking June 7-9 shows as “ground shaking,” saying that earthquake readings were detected up to 6 kilometers (3.73 miles) from Edinburgh’s Murrayfield Stadium.

The most enthusiastic dancing occurred on the Friday, although crowds on each night generated their own notable readings. In all, the concerts were attended by more than 200,000 fans.

The activity was mainly generated by fans dancing in time to the music and reached its peak at 160 beats per minute during “…Ready For It?,” where the crowd was transmitting approximately 80 kilowatts of power which BGS said is equivalent to about 6,000 car batteries.

Based on the maximum amplitude of motion (the distance the ground moves), the Friday night event was the most energetic by a small margin, recording 23.4 nanometers of movement.

Enthused BGS seismologist Callum Harrison, “It’s amazing that we’ve been able to measure the reaction of thousands of concert goers remotely through our data. The opportunity to explore a seismic activity created by a different kind of phenomenon has been a thrill. Clearly Scotland’s reputation for providing some of the most enthusiastic audiences remains well intact!”

In March, a study conducted by researchers at Caltech and UCLA concluded that Swift‘s August 2023 show at SoFi Stadium in California created seismic activity while her July stop at Seattle’s Lumen Field was similarly reported to have resulted in seismic activity the “equivalent of a 2.3 magnitude earthquake.”

The Edinburgh leg of The Eras Tour marked the first of 17 UK dates for Swift, which will wrap up in an eight-night run at London’s Wembley Stadium.
