What is a car trip computer?

April 18, 2023 by carwow staff

' class=

Almost all modern cars have trip computers, but what are these systems, and how do they work?

Trip computers are fitted as standard to almost every car currently offered for sale. These electronic components display important information in the driver’s instrument binnacle about the journeys you take. The information a trip computer typically displays, include average and instant fuel consumption, the distance travelled since the computer was last reset, and the estimated range the amount of fuel in the tank of a petrol and diesel car, or power in the battery of an EV , provides.

The first electronic trip computer came along in 1978 and was fitted to the Cadillac Seville. Mechanical systems had existed prior to that, but the Seville’s ability to calculate its own fuel economy and allow the driver to input the number of miles to their destination was a novel idea.

Car trip computers have evolved and become more sophisticated since then (especially where electric cars are concerned), but the principle behind them has remained unchanged. Here, we detail what a trip computer is, how it works, and what sort of information you can reasonably expect to be fed by one.

What do trip computers do?

As the old adage goes, a trip computer does what it says on the tin: it computes data linked to a trip.

There are a five key areas that a trip computer provides information on:

  • Time : trip computers will tell you how long you have been travelling since you started your journey. If linked to the sat-nav, they can also tell you how long you have to go until you reach your destination.
  • Distance:  as you can imagine, this will tell you how far the car has travelled since the trip computer was last reset.
  • Speed:  this will tell you the average speed the car has travelled since you last reset the computer.
  • Fuel consumption: this will generally display the car’s average fuel consumption, and instant fuel consumption – IE how much fuel the car is using in the moment.
  • Range:  this will estimate you how far you can go before your fuel tank is empty, or an EV’s battery is depleted.

An electric car’s trip computer will typically show you all the information covered above, as well as the electric equivalent of fuel economy: instead miles per gallon, you will be show miles per kiloWatt hour (EG if you have a 100kWh battery and the car does 3 miles per kWh, you will get 300 miles from a charge. Some EVs show how many kWh a car is using to cover 100 miles, instead of miles mer kWh – see here for more information .

In addition to this, many EVs will synchronise their battery ranges with the sat-nav, calculating how far you can go on a charge, and where you will need to stop to recharge if you are undertaking a long journey.

Can car trip computers measure different journeys?

Many trip computers provide information for three ‘trips’: Trip A, Trip B, and since reset.

This allows all the information detailed above to be measured in separately and in parallel across three time periods. You can reset each trip individually, or reset all at once.

As an example, you may want to use Trip A to determine how far, how fast and how efficiently the car goes on each tank of fuel, resetting Trip A each time you fill up the tank.

You may also, however, want to see if a new route to work takes less time, provides better fuel economy or is faster than your usual route. You could therefore reset Trip B to determine this, while leaving trip A to keep ticking along in the background until you next need to fill up with fuel.

As for the ‘since reset’ information, many people never touch this, meaning it may show how far, fast and efficiently the car has travelled since it left the factory (or possibly since its battery was last removed).

Do also note that if you make a series of short journeys (EG pick the kids up from school, pop into the supermarket, head over to football practice) those journeys will often be treated as a single trip by the car, which will typically reset itself to a new ‘trip’ after the car has been switched off for four hours or so.

trip computer for cars

Introduction

A trip computer is a sophisticated piece of technology that can be found in many modern cars. It is designed to provide drivers with instant access to a variety of data related to their driving experience. The information provided by a trip computer can help drivers make informed decisions while on the road, as well as enhance their overall driving experience.

A Comprehensive Look at a Car’s Trip Computer

A trip computer is essentially a miniature computer that is installed in a vehicle. It is connected to various sensors and components within the car, such as the speedometer, fuel gauge, and navigation system. The trip computer then uses this data to provide drivers with a comprehensive overview of their driving performance.

For example, the trip computer can track a driver’s average speed, total distance traveled, and fuel economy. It can also provide warnings if the driver is exceeding the speed limit or running low on fuel. Additionally, the trip computer can provide detailed navigation information and even suggest alternate routes.

Overview of the Features of a Trip Computer

Overview of the Features of a Trip Computer

The features of a trip computer vary depending on the model and make of the vehicle. However, most trip computers will include the following features:

Speedometer

The speedometer is the primary feature of any trip computer. It displays the current speed of the vehicle, as well as the average speed over a certain period of time. This feature is especially useful for drivers who want to ensure they are not exceeding the speed limit.

Mileage Calculations

The trip computer can calculate the total distance traveled by the vehicle over a certain period of time. This feature is useful for both long-distance travelers and commuters alike, as it allows them to track their progress and plan accordingly.

Fuel Economy

The trip computer can also calculate the vehicle’s fuel efficiency. This feature is particularly useful for drivers who want to maximize their fuel economy. By monitoring the fuel efficiency of their vehicle, drivers can adjust their driving habits to get the most out of every tank of gas.

Another common feature of a trip computer is navigation. Most trip computers come equipped with GPS, allowing drivers to easily find their way around unfamiliar territory. The navigation system can also suggest alternate routes to avoid traffic or adverse weather conditions.

Other Features

Some trip computers may also include additional features, such as a digital clock or temperature gauge. These features are not essential, but they can be useful additions to a trip computer.

The Benefits of Installing a Trip Computer in Your Vehicle

Installing a trip computer in your vehicle can provide numerous benefits. According to a study conducted by the University of California, Berkeley, “drivers who used a trip computer reported increased safety and improved efficiency in their driving.” Here are some of the key benefits of installing a trip computer in your vehicle:

Increased Safety

The trip computer can provide drivers with real-time alerts if they are exceeding the speed limit or running low on fuel. This can help prevent accidents and other dangerous situations on the road.

Improved Efficiency

By tracking the vehicle’s fuel efficiency, the trip computer can help drivers make the most out of every tank of gas. This can save money in the long run and make driving more efficient.

Enhanced Convenience

The navigation system can make it easier to find your way around unfamiliar areas. Additionally, the digital clock can help drivers stay on top of their schedule. These features can make driving more convenient and enjoyable.

A Guide to Understanding a Car’s Trip Computer

Although a trip computer can be an incredibly useful tool, it can be confusing to use at first. Here are some tips for understanding and using a car’s trip computer:

Learning How to Use the Features

Most trip computers come with a user manual that explains how to use each of the features. Take the time to read through the manual and familiarize yourself with the different features and settings.

Troubleshooting Tips

If you experience any issues with your trip computer, consult the user manual for troubleshooting tips. You may also want to contact the manufacturer for further assistance.

Maintenance and Upkeep

It is important to keep your trip computer in good working condition. Make sure to regularly check the connections and replace any worn or damaged parts. This will help ensure that your trip computer is always functioning properly.

A trip computer can be a valuable asset for any driver. It provides drivers with real-time information about their driving performance, as well as helpful navigation features. Installing a trip computer in your vehicle can increase safety, improve efficiency, and enhance convenience. To get the most out of your trip computer, take the time to learn how to use the features and maintain it properly.

A trip computer is an electronic device that provides various bits of information to the driver of an automobile. It consists of an onboard computer that analyzes various functions of the car and a display screen that shows information to the driver. The typical trip computer shows constantly updated information, such as distance traveled, average speed, and average fuel consumption. Some are able to show information about more than one trip or driver and may have added functions such as low tire pressure warnings and maintenance reminders. Trip computers were once reserved for luxury vehicles, but they are increasingly available on less expensive models and typically can be added as an aftermarket option as well.

A trip computer has two main parts. The computer analyzes and records information about various vehicle systems. The display screen shows the resulting information to the driver in "real time." The display screen is usually located near the gauges, on the dashboard, or overhead. A trip computer is an extremely useful device that helps the driver stay aware of his or her driving habits and of the status of certain parts of the vehicle.

trip computer for cars

Some of the information that is usually shown by the trip computer includes distance traveled and average speed. This can help the driver figure out how much of a trip remains and if he or she is likely to arrive at the destination on time. Most trip computers also display fuel consumption information, including a rate that is averaged over time and a current, up-to-the-minute reading of fuel usage per unit of distance traveled. Some also show the distance the car can still travel before running out of fuel. This type of information is particularly useful on long trips.

trip computer for cars

The trip computer on some cars can also show additional information that may be useful to the driver. Low tire pressure warnings, for example, let the driver know if the tires are under or over-inflated. Maintenance reminders, such as remaining oil life, are often incorporated in the latest models as well. Many computers are able to switch between two separate trips or drivers and allow motorists to select which information they would like to see.

At one time, only premium car brands and models had trip computers available as an option. As technology becomes more widespread, many less expensive vehicles also come with this device standard or offer it as an option. There are also several types of aftermarket trip computers that can be added to a car that isn't equipped with one. Aftermarket devices are usually mounted in the dashboard and connected to the electrical and other systems. These units should be installed by a qualified professional.

I am looking to buy a car with satellite-navigation fitted. I am confused by a lot of ads that mention a 'computer' or 'trip computer'. What do they mean by that? Does it mean that the car has satellite-navigation?

A trip computer in a car has various functions, but none of them will direct you to your destination.

They can log distance travelled, provide instantaneous fuel consumption, average fuel consumption and other variations around this theme.

You need to specifically look for adverts which mention satellite-navigation or sat-nav if you want to be told where to go.

Car Ownership

Cars are full of small little details that all make up the driving experience. Every year, new technology finds its way into cars, complementing the experience and making it safer, easier, and more enjoyable to travel. One of the small features that has come a long way is the humble trip computer. But what is it and what does it do?

The trip computer started as a humble tumbler that kept track of the distance your car had covered. Slowly it evolved to being able to show the total distance covered and your trip (provided you reset it before setting off). As the digital age progressed and LCD displays and computers made their way into cars, the simple odometer and trip meter morphed into a handy instrument that could give you a variety of readouts.

Modern Trip Computers

Just about every new car on sale today has a digital trip computer. You'll find it in the gauge cluster as a series of numbers, usually between the tachometer (rev counter) and speedometer. Even the most basic ones will still tell you how far the vehicle has travelled throughout its life and on your  most recent trip . The more advanced ones will allow you to select two different trips, Trip A and Trip B (usually), that allow you to reset one when you fill your tank and use the other when you start your trip, allowing you to check how far you've travelled on a tank of fuel.

trip computer for cars

Step things up a notch and some will calculate your predicted fuel range and give you an average of your vehicle's fuel consumption, usually in litres per 100 km. From here, more advanced ones will allow you to see your instantaneous fuel consumption as well as your average. Some will offer a screen or reading that resets each time you set off on a journey automatically, eliminating the need to reset it yourself. You will even find some that will include the duration of your journey in hours and minutes.

trip computer for cars

Electric Vehicles (EVs) display similar figures, but most offer a range prediction, allowing you to gauge how far you can still drive on the remaining battery. Some also show the battery percentage, handy if you know how much energy your EV consumes per kilometer.

Spending some time (while parked) getti g to know your trip computer and how to cycle through the different readings will help you avoid scary low fuel situations and give you better understanding of when your car requires attention.

Did you know that your car is installed with at least one computer to help you drive with as much ease and comfort as possible? Vehicle on-board computers have many different functions, but how do they work and how can you get the most out of them?

Engine Control Units (ECUs)

All modern cars have an ECU fitted. It is a computerised ‘brain’ that tweaks the engine to keep its operation as efficient as possible. The ECU, as it’s often abbreviated to, receives data from sensors and uses the information to regulate various parts of the engine. It does this to optimise performance while keeping the impact on the environment to a minimum.

It can also detect when something isn’t working as it should and can pass this on to the driver. It does this by illuminating a “Check Engine” light in the instrument display. Once the car is taken into a garage, a professional mechanic can then read a diagnostic code from the computer and solve the issue.

Older cars might not benefit from an ECU, however, as all cars leased through the Motability Scheme are brand new , customers will always have this as well as the latest mandatory safety technology.

Onboard trip computers

There will also be a built-in trip computer giving you information about fuel, letting you know when you should be thinking about finding a service station and helping you to adjust your driving style to drive more efficiently.

The display will show you the miles per gallon (mpg) you are doing as well as showing you the number of gallons (or litres) of petrol or diesel left in your tank and how much fuel mileage is left before you need to fill up again. Additionally, some trip computers can estimate the amount of time you have spent driving on an individual journey and the quantity of time left before the fuel is used up.

Subject to the make, model and year of your vehicle, the trip computer will have different abilities. In more affordable cars, a trip computer may only comprise fuel mileage information and an outside temperature gauge. In more luxury vehicles, they are often more sophisticated. For instance, some can monitor overall efficiency for separate drivers and they can check the tyre pressure, too.

Other onboard trip computers can alert you if the vehicle is due for a service. For example, the computer can show the number of miles left until an oil change is needed and then flash up a message when it is time for maintenance.

Your car is covered for regular servicing or repairs to general wear and tear. Your dealer will get in touch when a service is due.

Data protection

Many modern cars have hi-tech infotainment systems which allow you to ‘pair’ (connect) your smartphone via Bluetooth with your vehicle. This means you make and receive calls over your car’s audio system.

When you pair your phone to a vehicle with Bluetooth, the computer within the infotainment system keeps your phone number. It does this to make it easier to connect later. It also retains the contacts you dialled, as well as your call logs. But there’s just one issue: all that data is stored inside the system and is just hanging around for the next owner of the car to find.

Onboard car computer

So, just before it’s time to swap your car in for your next model , give yourself five or 10 minutes to delete your personal information. Just go into the vehicle’s settings (it will be different for every make and model) and pinpoint your smartphone. There will be an option to delete your phone. That should erase the saved contacts and call logs. Better still, look for an option to remove all user data or do a factory reset. Information on this will be in the manufacturer’s handbook. Alternatively, you can ask your dealer to do this for you when you return the car.

If you used the vehicle’s inbuilt satellite navigation system, you have one more thing to do before you wave goodbye to your car. Ensure you enter the sat-nav’s settings and erase your location history. These are good practices to keep to.

However, this privacy concern with car infotainment computer systems should be disappearing in the future as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and other systems become standard on more vehicles. These show the information from your smartphone without keeping it, so when you take your phone out of your car, none of your personal information stays behind.

All in all, most modern cars are a moving computer network. In fact, it is startling how much onboard technology today’s vehicles have.

More computers available

Aside from these common vehicle on-board computers, there are many others that your car might have, such as:

  • There is usually a computer governing a car’s automatic gearbox
  • If your vehicle has anti-lock-brakes, a computer will be reading the wheel motion and overseeing the brakes
  • Many airbags have their own computers
  • Cruise control systems use computers
  • Any CD player or radio with a digital display contains a computer

Mythbusting the world of EVs: are trip computers accurate?

Here's why you can trust your electric car's battery readout more than an ICE car

EV battery range

MYTH: Trip computers are really inaccurate

The good news: electric cars almost always have an amazingly accurate trip computer and battery gauge. Petrol and diesel cars are congenital liars. A combustion car’s fuel gauge will stick cheerily on full for the first 100 miles. Then gravity gradually takes hold and the needle accelerates downward, finally taking a terrifying plunge from a quarter full to empty.

Whereas in an electric car, the state of charge meter is accurate. Drive in the same style, and each 10 per cent fall in the battery meter will get you the same distance. (Speed up and the next 10 per cent will get you less far, slow down or go downhill and it’ll stretch. Which is why I never look at the range-to-go meter – it doesn’t know how conditions will change.)

Combustion car average mpg readouts are hopeless. Divide miles driven by fuel pumped in, and you’ll find them 10–15 per cent optimistic. Whereas electric car miles per kWh readings are usually spot on. Zero the trip when you unplug, drive a full range, divide miles by the mpkWh readout and the resulting figure will be almost exactly the battery’s specified net capacity.

The bad news: the mpkWh figure is less than the electricity you pay for. There’s usually about a 10 per cent loss in the AC charging process. The trip computer is showing you battery-to-wheel energy consumption, not grid-to-wheel. Mind you, combustion cars suffer similar unaccounted losses. In calculating your input of petroleum, or output of CO2, you should use a well-to-wheel figure, not the tank-to-wheel number.

What is Lincoln's Head-Up Display?

Trip computers usually accurate on fuel economy

John Paul

Q: When you road test a car and record the mileage are you going by the computer readout or are you actually doing the math?

My Toyota Camry says the fuel economy should be 25 miles per gallon in the city and 35 miles per gallon on the highway. In the first 2200 miles I have driven so far, my average city-highway combination is about 32 mpg, according to the trip computer. The next tank full of fuel I calculated the mileage the old-fashioned way and only came up with 29 miles per gallon.

Do you think the Toyota trip computer is overestimating the miles per gallon?

A:  I have found the trip computers are generally pretty accurate when compared to the refuel, drive and refuel method. Some differences can be attributed to how you fill the tank, even the type and quality of fuel used. The car's trip computer is measuring the fuel injector flow rates, engine temperature, fuel tank float level and other information gathered by the car's computer system. In theory the trip computer should be more accurate but I don't believe that is always the case.

When I do my calculation, whenever possible, I try to drive the same "route" and fill up at the same station. When refilling I fill the tank on the slow fill setting on the pump and stop when the nozzle clicks off once. Just measuring fuel economy on one trip is an estimate at best. The most accurate number comes from months of recording data.

Brake fluid replaced

Q:  My 2007 Toyota has 115,000 miles on it. When I brought it in for an oil change the shop recommended a brake fluid change. I have been driving cars for 40 years and have never had brake fluid changed. I had it replaced, but did I waste my money?

A:  Brake fluid attracts moisture and moisture causes rust. Rust and contamination in a brake system is a dangerous and sometimes an expensive combination. You probably had brake fluid changed but just didn't realize it. During normal brake servicing, when a hydraulic component is replaced the old brake fluid and any air is bled from the system, replaced by fresh fluid. In your most recent trip for service, if the brake fluid was dirty you didn't waste your money having it flushed and replaced.

Battery drain

Q:  I have been reading what you said about Subaru and their batteries going dead. I have been told, and have experienced, that if a modern car is allowed to stand unused for about two weeks that the battery will drain to zero and not start the engine. Two weeks seems like very poor engineering on the part of vehicle manufacturers. Why would anyone want a car that needs a jump-start after a two-week vacation?

A:  Your mechanic is right to a point, today's cars have more electronics in them running in the background than ever before. Parasitic drain is when these electronics never actually shut down completely. I have always felt that electrical drain of 25 milliamps is normal and anything over 90 milliamps could cause an issue. Using these numbers and a typical battery the car should be able to sit for 30 days without an issue. If you find that if your car sits for two weeks and needs a jumpstart I would suspect there is some sort of problem.

Brake sensor light

Q:  I have a 12-year-old Toyota and periodically the brake light comes on. I had the brakes checked and the shop has never found anything wrong. All they do is add a tiny bit of brake fluid and send me on my way. They told me that it is normal to add a little brake fluid from time to time. Wouldn't this indicate a leak?

A: Your shop did the right thing and checked for leaks and they are correct that brake fluid level will go down a bit over time. This happens as the brake pads wear and more fluid is needed at the brake calipers to make up for the wearing pads. More than likely the brake fluid level sensor (a float) is sticking and turning on the light. Checking the fluid probably jolts the sensor enough to let it work again.

Travelers Say This Unexpected Amazon Find Is the 'Hero of Road Trips' — and It Won't Cost More Than $45

No more crumbs taking over your car.

With the joys of road tripping , you also get some minor discomforts, like crumbs and clutter all over the car, all the time. The mess is a small price to pay for the epic memories you make of group karaoke sessions, quirky roadside attractions, and untouched landscapes whizzing by, but if you’re one who strives for a clean commute, we have found the perfect gadget for you.

This handheld vacuum ensures cleanups are quick and painless, and that a silly thing like spilled snacks never hinders the road trip experience. Best of all, it’s easy to pack and fit in with the rest of your road trip essentials.

Bissell AeroSlim Hand Vacuum

Though not explicitly made for car travel, this Bissell AeroSlim Hand Vacuum ticks all the boxes of portability: It’s cordless, USB-chargeable, compact (taking up only about a foot of trunk space), and lightweight (weighing down your load by just one pound). It has more than 16,000 ratings on Amazon, where it has a 4.3-star average and glowing reviews calling it “the hero of road trips.”

“What a delight it was to spend five minutes going over my car after a 12-hour drive with a small child, and getting everything nice and clean again for the drive home,” wrote one reviewer . “The attachments allowed me to get into the car seat, and sucked up all the miscellaneous snacks that seemingly disappeared into the abyss.” They said the vacuum is worth every penny.

The device comes with a two-in-one hose and dusting brush attachment for getting into crevices. The included stand stores both the vacuum and the attachment. It also comes with a USB cable that you can use to charge at home, in your hotel room, off a laptop, or in your car.

The vacuum has a 7.2-volt lithium-ion battery that provides up to 12 straight minutes of sweeping action and recharges in 2.5 to 3.5 hours. There are three lights on the device that tell you when it’s fully charged or losing power. Reviewers say that although it does lose charge quickly, it also charges back up in no time. One said , “On average, my wife and I might use this thing for a few minutes a day, and we find ourselves plugging it in to recharge maybe once every 10 to 14 days.”

Cleaning it out is as easy as emptying the dust bin and rinsing the reusable filter. Some comments say that this particular Bissell pick works better than other handheld vacuums at sucking up hairs and crumbs and holding onto them instead of spitting them back out. “I've had far more expensive, name-brand floor vacuums that couldn't keep their contents inside the vacuum,” one shopper said . “This has a little flapper door that works very well so far.”

When you aren’t road tripping, the Bissell AeroSlim Hand Vacuum can be used to spot clean around the house, including furniture, keyboards, and hard-to-reach nooks. It’s just $42 at Amazon, so totally worth it to keep messes under control while traveling. Read on for more road trip-friendly handheld vacuums that are up to 80 percent off at Amazon right now.

Cyberattack shuts down computer systems at thousands of auto dealerships, reports say

( KPHO /Gray News) - A reported cyberattack has impacted thousands of auto dealerships around the country with their computer systems being shut down.

CNN reports that data provider CDK Global , which is used by 15,000 auto dealers, has been affected in what it is calling a cyber incident.

CDK Global representatives said its team is investigating the situation, but as a precaution, the dealerships’ systems have been turned off.

“We are actively investigating a cyber incident,” CNN quoted CDK spokesperson Lisa Finney from a statement. “Out of an abundance of caution and concern for our customers, we have shut down most of our systems and are working diligently to get everything up and running as quickly as possible.”

CBS News and Automotive News reported that the incident appeared to involve a hack into the company’s software, which has impacted dealers in multiple states.

As of Tuesday afternoon, some systems have returned, but several social media reports indicate that many dealers remain unable to process sales deals or other transactions.

Tech blog Bleeping Computer reported that the cyberattack prompted CDK to “shut down its IT systems, phones, and applications to prevent the attack’s spread.”
