One of the best things to see in Amsterdam in December is the festively decorated neighborhoods. Amsterdam Weather: Christmas and Winter Climate

It is tough to prepare for Amsterdam Christmas weather – it can vary drastically from day to day…and even from hour to hour. Typically, winter temperatures in Amsterdam are quite cold – often dipping below freezing overnight.

That said, sometimes the weather in Amsterdam at Christmas gets so cold that the canals freeze over. When the ice is thick enough, brave locals even go ice skating on Amsterdam Central canals. Precipitation – either snow or rain, depending on the temperature – is common during the winter in Holland, but is rarely heavy.

Our Amsterdam at Christmas weather was generally mild with temperatures in the mid-40Fs. There were days of overcast skies and bouts of rain, but not enough to put a damper on our festive spirit! When you visit Amsterdam in winter, you just need to be prepared for the various elements.

It’s always a good idea to bring a packable raincoat , a travel umbrella – and hats , gloves and scarfs , too!

While the Light Festival in Amsterdam certainly brightens the short days and dark nights, they aren’t the only lights in the city! It should be noted that Christmas decorations in Amsterdam tend to be simple and understated, rather than flashy or gaudy. Some of our favorite Amsterdam Christmas decorations were modest wreaths hung on doors and sparsely decorated trees in quaint neighborhood squares.

The largest Amsterdam Christmas tree stands in Dam Square in the heart of the city. The Dam Square Christmas Tree reaches the height of 20 meters (65 feet) and is covered in more than 40,000 lights. The tree is usually lit in mid-December in a fun Amsterdam Christmas time celebration.

The tree lighting ceremony includes carol singers and vendors selling classic Christmastime Dutch Food , like poffertjes (mini pancakes) and Oliebollen (donuts).

However, there are a few key differences that visitors need to know about before planning Christmas trips to Amsterdam.

Steaming spiced wine, sweet treats and traditional huts are all part of the scene, but Dutch Christmas Markets are quite different from the neighboring German Christmas fairs. Unlike the sprawling, month-long celebrations in other European cities, the Amsterdam winter markets tend to be smaller and more subdued.

Furthermore, some of the markets only take place on a single day or weekend – meaning, unless you plan to spend the entire month of December in Amsterdam, you will not have the opportunity to go to all of them!

Museumplein Christmas Market and Ice Festival Amsterdam

Two of the city’s best holiday events take place in one square that together create the quintessential Dutch winter market. The Museumplein Amsterdam Christmas Market and Ice*Amsterdam Festival are two overlapping events that shouldn’t be missed.

The atmospheric market – which features traditional holiday chalets, fire pits and cauldrons of mulled wine – is open in the weeks running up to Christmas through the day after Xmas.

The Amsterdam Ice Festival is the ideal place to go ice skating in Amsterdam at Christmas. The rink is backdropped by the striking Rijksmuseum and features a replica Magere Brug (the iconic ‘Skinny Bridge’) and a cozy bistro. The Amsterdam ice skating rink typically opens in mid-November and operates until the beginning of February. 

Westergas: The Funky Xmas Market Amsterdam and Amsterdamsche Kerstmarkt

Westergas is the city’s hip, artistic district that occupies a former gas factory within the spacious Westerpark. Ideal for events, two Christmas fairs take place in the historical and stylish venue.

The Funky Christmas Market Amsterdam is a unique market in that it features handmade wares and artsy events. This market takes place on a Sunday in mid-December (the 17th for 2023).

The Amsterdamsche Kerstmarkt was moved to Westergas in 2019 and is typically held for just a few days before Christmas. The market features food trucks, Dutch Craft Beer , live music, films and art. They also have an ice rink and Christmas karaoke. 

Rembrandtplein Christmas Market

The Winterland Market in Rembrandtplein is one of the only Amsterdam Central Christmas Markets. Complete with an ice-skating rink and numerous Christmas houses doling our classic treats, the Christmas Market at Rembrandtplein is the perfect place to warm up with a cup of mulled wine.

Amsterdam Winter Paradise

The Het Amsterdamse Winterparadijs is a wintertime amusement park! At this Christmas fair in Amsterdam, participants join in the festive activities – like ice racing, curling and snowball throwing. In the Winterplein, visitors can roast marshmallows, ride the Ferris Wheel or slide down the Tube Jump. During the day, the event is family friendly, but at night there are DJs, live musicians and plenty of places to imbibe. Note: This is not a free Amsterdam Christmas Market; tickets are required for entry.

Dam Square Christmas Market

Okay, so technically there is not an organized Christmas Market on Dam Square, but the area does exude an extra Christmassy feeling with the gigantic tree and a few vendors selling Christmas treats.

Pure Winter Market Amsterdam

With a special focus on food and sustainable gifts, the Pure Winter Market offers a different kind of Christmas market. The one-day events are held on Sundays in various Amsterdam parks.

Pro Tip : The Christmas Market Haarlem takes place on one weekend, usually in the beginning of December…so plan accordingly!

Amstelveen Christmas Market

The Christmas Market Amstelveen is a Winter Village that features an ice rink and 60 vendors selling handmade gifts.

Den Ilp Christmas Village Amsterdam

The small village of Den Ilp, just north of Amsterdam, only has a population of 800 residents, but they put on an incredible Christmas light display!

Those who don’t mind traveling a little bit further might want to check out the Floating Christmas Market in Leiden or The Royal Christmas Fair in The Hague. We have also celebrated Christmas in Nijmegen ; which is in the eastern side of the Netherlands near the German border and the fun Kleve Christmas Market.

Amsterdam is well-connected to Germany by train, plane and bus – which is perfect for making a quick trip across the border for a few German Christmas Markets! Our top picks for a short day jaunt or overnight trip would be to the nearby Dusseldorf Christmas Market (only 2 hours by train) or the Christmas Market in Frankfurt .

It would also be fairly easy to get to Paris and London for their fabulous holiday celebrations. Furthermore, there is an Alsace to Amsterdam Christmas Cruise that allows passengers to cruise in style from Basel , Switzerland on an 8-day river boat tour, visiting some of the best markets in the region – including Strasbourg , Colmar and Amsterdam!

Sinterklaas (December 5/6)

Sinterklaas – or Saint Nick – is one of the best Amsterdam Christmas traditions for kids! In mid-November, Sinterklaas arrives via boat from Spain. He travels around accompanied by his (controversial) Zwarte Piet helpers visiting children in a buildup to Feast Day on December 5. That night, Sinterklaas brings presents to good boys and girls – then the following day (St. Nicolas Day), he sails off until next year.

Pro Tip : Kruidnoten, one of our favorite Dutch Christmas cookies, are only eaten when Sinterklaas is in town…so get them while you can!

Christmas Eve in Amsterdam (December 24)

In Amsterdam, Christmas Eve is not a celebrated public holiday. Grocery stores and bars might even be a bit busier than usual, but there is not a traditional Christmas Eve dinner in Amsterdam or any other holiday customs celebrated on the day.

Amsterdam Christmas Day (December 25)

Xmas Day in Amsterdam is an official holiday, so many things are closed. Expect closures at most grocery stores, shops, markets, restaurants and museums. However, there are exceptions – and still plenty of things to do in Amsterdam on Christmas Day!

What and Where to Eat on Christmas Day in Amsterdam

If you are staying in the city on December 25, you are likely wondering, Are restaurants open in Amsterdam on Christmas Day?

To be honest, there are not many open Amsterdam restaurants on Christmas Day, leaving tourists with few choices for a holiday meal. Those staying in apartments where they have use of a kitchen can prepare festive meals at home, but we have a few tips for travelers staying in hotels, too!

Christmas Lunch Amsterdam

Many locals celebrate the holiday with Christmas Lunch in Amsterdam. Typically the Dutch Christmas Brunch is eaten at home with family and friends. For visitors, there are a few restaurants that are open for Christmas Day lunch in Amsterdam…but not many. Instead, an easy – yet so very Amsterdam – Christmas lunch could be a simple charcuterie platter of local cheeses and meat. This could work in an apartment or hotel room, but if it is nice enough outside, as a picnic along a canal or in a park.

Christmas Dinner Amsterdam

Christmas night is usually highlighted by a feast at home. Traditional Christmas Dinner in the Netherlands consists of a shrimp starter, thick pea soup (called Erwtensoep or Snert), roasted vegetables (like brussel sprouts and potatoes) and a main meat dish (often game meat such as rabbit, venison or duck).

However, a relatively new custom for Christmas Day dinner in Amsterdam is Gourmetten – where diners cook their own meals of bite-sized meats and veggies in small skillets over a tabletop oven. This Amsterdam Christmas tradition requires a special Gourmetten set – but ask if your Airbnb host has an extra one and you can pick up ingredients already prepared at the local grocery store.

If a kitchen and/or Gourmetten set is not available to you, do not fear. There are a handful of Christmas Day restaurants open in Amsterdam where visitors can eat a festive meal. In fact, many restaurants serve a fixed menu of classic Amsterdam Christmas food. Just note that it is essential to make a reservation in advance.

Christmas Mass Amsterdam

Despite the hefty number of churches in Amsterdam, the residents of the city are not particularly religious. Most churches do hold a Christmas Eve or Christmas Day mass, but it won’t likely be heavily attended (or, of course, in English).

Pro Tip : Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder (Church in the Attic) offers Christmas Mass, which we think would be quite atmospheric. Tickets are required and should be booked in advance for your Amsterdam Christmas trip.

What Is Open on Christmas Day in Amsterdam?

Not everything is closed! In fact, top city museums – like the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House – are all open on Christmas Day. Additionally, the Museumplein Christmas Market and Ice Amsterdam skating rink are open, too.

Some canal cruises are also operational. While most coffeeshops and bars are closed, there are a handful of Central and neighborhood establishments that are open for business.

If the weather is nice, Christmas Day is the perfect day to visit some of the city’s parks. The sun was shining when we were in Amsterdam for Christmas, so we headed for Vondelpark, which was full of locals, families and tourists.

Public Transport is operational on Christmas Day, following the Sunday schedule.

Boxing Day Amsterdam – Second Christmas (December 26)

The day after Christmas, Second Christmas, is another holiday celebrated in Amsterdam. Although more restaurants, bars and shops are open than on Christmas Day, many establishments remain closed through the 26th. Additionally, Public Transport operates on a Sunday schedule on Amsterdam Boxing Day.

Amsterdam between Christmas and New Year

Amsterdam after Christmas is a busy time of year. Between school holidays and work vacations, people flood into the city beginning the day after Christmas, so expect it to be a bit more crowded.

Amsterdam Holidays: New Year’s Eve and Day (Dec 31 and Jan 1)

New Year’s Eve in Amsterdam is celebrated with fireworks (A LOT of fireworks) and parties (both elegant affairs and all-night raves). Champagne is the holiday drink of choice and, in the Netherlands, Oliebollen (traditional Dutch donuts) are the NYE tradition.

In Amsterdam on New Year’s Day, many people dive right in with a frigid North Sea swim. The event in nearby Zandvoort aan Zee hosts one of the biggest New Year Day plunges. Do you dare join in?!

With the fairytale gabled houses, canals and a lovely Christmas tradition, Amsterdam is definitely one of my favourite towns to be at during the holiday season. There are so many places to see and events to go to during that time of the year. Here is my short guide with 10 things you should do during the Christmas season in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam somehow becomes even more beautiful during the Christmas season. It looks even older, almost like you’ve stepped into some past time. Snow and Christmas lights create a perfect setting for that festive time in Amsterdam .

#1 – Visit the Amsterdam Light Festival

Light Festival is the annual event in Amsterdam held from mid-November to mid-January. Artists from all around the world are creating light installations, especially for this event. Selected art pieces are exhibited during the two months and could be seen along the canals. The best way to see them is on one of the special Amsterdam Light Festival canal cruise boats or by taking a walk alongside the canals.

⤷ 2021 Update : After being cancelled last year, the Festival is taking place between December 2nd 2021 and January 23rd 2022. It’s absolutely one of the best things to do in Amsterdam during the Christmas season.

#2 – Join the Sinterklaas celebration

The holiday season in Amsterdam starts with the arrival of Sinterklaas (Saint Nicholas) on the second or third Sunday in November. Each year a huge celebration is organised in Amsterdam. And you can be sure you’ll leave it with your pockets filled with pepernoten (small traditional Dutch cookies).

Although lately the whole celebration is a bit controversial with all the Zwarte Piet discussions, it’s still one of the most favourite holidays and Amsterdam festive celebrations of Dutch children.

#3 – Try some oliebollen

If snowdrops are the first signs of the spring, then trucks with oliebollen are the early signs of the Christmas season in Amsterdam. Oliebollen are similar to doughnuts, only they are made in the shape of a boll. They’re often flavoured with apple filling or simply served with a bunch of icing sugar. Tastes like heaven, but be careful because they’re pretty caloric.

However, be sure to try them at least once during the Christmas season in Amsterdam.

#4 – Go ice skating

In December, Amsterdam is becoming the home of a few ice skating rinks. The most beautiful one is on the Museumplein , and it’s open to visitors already at the end of November. However, the largest one is Jaap Eden, with an outdoor 400-metre rink. It’s a bit outside the city centre but definitely worth visiting if enjoy some ice skating.

Each year Amsterdam is becoming more and more illuminated during the holiday season. Some of the most beautiful Christmas lights could be found at Damrak, Dam Square and Museumplein.

‘Turn on the lights’ event on De Bijenkorf department store on a Dam Square symbolically marks the beginning of a holiday season in Amsterdam. Although it still cannot compete with the decoration of department stores in London , it’s definitely worth seeing. So be sure to walk next to De Bijenkorf one evening and enjoy the Christmas decoration there, too.

#6 – Visit ICE Amsterdam

ICE Amsterdam is a unique program organised at the Museumplein during December. I’ve already mentioned an ice skating rink, but there is also a nice restaurant there where you can get a glass of hot chocolate or a nice mulled wine. ⤷ 2021 Update : After being cancelled last year, ICE Amsterdam is happening in 2021. It’s already up and running. However keep an eye on their website for some possible changes in future.

#7 – Go to the Christmas edition of Museum Market

On Sunday, December 12th, a special edition of Museum Market will be organised at the Museumplein. Designers and artists from all over the Netherlands are displaying and selling their work there. It’s a great place to buy some of the Christmas decorations or presents made by these designers.

#8 – Visit some of the smaller Christmas Markets

There are numerous smaller Christmas markets organised around the city during December. Some events mainly focus on delicious homemade or organic food, different destinations (like Finish or French Christmas market), or arts and crafts. #9 – Visit Rijksmuseum around the Christmas Day

Museums are especially festive during the holiday season. With beautiful Christmas trees and decorations, Rijksmuseum is one of my favourite places to go. If you’re in Amsterdam during Christmas time, be sure to dress up and pay a visit to the Rijksmuseum on December 24th or 26th. It will really put you in that lovely holiday mood. #10 – Buy Christmas cards inspired by Amsterdam

I’m always so sad that the holiday season lasts for only one month. Well, you can always prolong that festive feeling and a special winter appearance of Amsterdam with some of the Christmas cards inspired by it. First, let’s take a look at some of the best Christmas Markets and festive locations in Amsterdam:

• Location: Museumplein, between Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum .
• Open: Daily between 13 and 26 December 2023, from 11 AM (noon on weekdays) to 9 PM.
• Entrance: FREE.

Are you looking for the best Christmas Markets in Amsterdam? If you expect to find a list with the locations, then I’m afraid I’ll have to disappoint you…

And yes, I’m well aware that there are articles listing 5 or even 10 best Christmas Markets in Amsterdam… But when you look deeper, you’ll realize that some of them are not even in the city, and others are only open one day or one weekend per year.

The truth is that there is only one Christmas Market in Amsterdam – Christmas Village on Museum Square – that is somewhat comparable to what the traditional Christmas Markets look like in the rest of Europe.

Furthermore, it’s really small and can’t even be compared to e.g. the Brussels Christmas Market or the smaller Bruges Christmas Market , not even talking about the major ones in Germany or northern France… Let’s just say that any of the little towns in Alsace have bigger and more impressive Christmas Markets than Amsterdam…

Below, you can find more information about the Amsterdam Christmas Market.

As mentioned, the Christmas Market in Amsterdam is rather small and the number of market stalls varies by year. Usually, there are not more than 40-50 stands. But the market is very cozy – with nice wooden chalets and Christmas lights.

You will find all kinds of foods and drinks here – from mulled wine to traditional Dutch herring, poffertjes (mini-pancakes), and oliebollen (deep-fried dough balls). There are also places selling seasonal clothing, artisanal handcrafted gifts, etc.

In some years, there is also an ice skating rink on Museum Square. Unfortunately, it’s not the case in winter 2023.

Good to know: Entry to the market is free and everything you buy at the market can be paid by debit card or via your smartphone. Credit cards are not widely accepted and if you want to pay cash, it’s best to bring small bills. For more practical information, see the official website of this Christmas Village .

Amsterdam Winter Paradise

• Location: Europaplein, next to RAI Amsterdam Convention Centre.
• Open: Daily from 14 to December 30, 2023, between 9 AM and 11 PM (midnight on weekends) .
• Entrance: Tickets with entry time slots .

Amsterdam Winter Paradise (Het Amsterdamse Winterparadijs) is by far the best place to be if you are looking for all kinds of winter-themed activities in Amsterdam. This is not a traditional Christmas Market, but rather a winter fair .

Here, you will find several ice skating rinks (one indoors and one outside), a Ferris Wheel, sliding slopes, all kinds of light installations, carousels, swing rides, and similar. There are also several bars and eateries and you can even roast marshmallows by the fire. They also organize all kinds of events, both for kids as well as adults.

Good to know: You will need a ticket to enter the grounds and all the regular activities are included (except the ones where you play to win prizes). Entry tickets are timed and prices are higher in the evenings ( book in advance !!!), but once you are inside, you can stay as long as you want to.

TIP: Visit earlier in the day and avoid weekends. It’s not just cheaper, but you will also be able to enjoy more activities without the crowds. Evenings can get very busy and you’ll have to queue at most attractions. The good thing is that the queues tend to move fast.

Location and getting there: Amsterdam Winter Paradise is located right next to RAI Amsterdam Convention Centre, about 2km south of Museum Square. While you can walk here from the city center in about 30-60 minutes, you can easily get here by metro. It’s just 4 stops/8 minutes ride from the Central Station.

The popular Upside Down Museum is located just nearby. So you can easily combine a visit to Winter Paradise and Upside Down – both are fun for the whole family.

Ice Skating Rink on Rembrandt Square

• Location: Rembrandtplein.
• Open: Daily between 17 November 2023 and 6 January 2024.
• Entrance: Free to watch, a few euros to skate.

On Rembrandt Square in the historic city center, you can find a small ice skating rink . There are also a couple of street food stalls selling mulled wine, hot chocolate, grilled sausages, and similar.

It’s not really what you could call a ‘Christmas Market’ but if you are looking for a cozy festive atmosphere and winter activities in Amsterdam, this is one of the few places worth checking out. In the winter of 2023, it’s also the only ice skating rink in the center of Amsterdam.

Good to know: You can rent skates or bring your own. A day ticket costs just a few euros and you can skate as long as you want to. Also here, debit cards and mobile payments are accepted, but credit cards are pretty much useless…

Amsterdam Christmas Trees

If you are wondering where to find the Amsterdam Christmas Tree , you may want to know that this varies year by year. There is also not one ‘main’ Christmas Tree, but several of them, in different locations, and they are usually rather simply decorated.

Usually, there is a big Christmas Tree on the Dam Square , in front of the Royal Palace. However, it’s not always the case. On my recent winter visit to Amsterdam, there were no decorations here at all, just a big group of pigeons…

There is usually a Christmas Tree on Museum Square , behind Rijksmuseum where the main Christmas Market is. This is often one of the bigger trees you’ll find in the center.

You might also find a Christmas Tree on Beursplein (Stock Exchange Square) or some other location on the main avenue, Damrak.

In other words, just walk around, explore the city, and you will likely stumble upon several Christmas Trees here and there.

• Location: all over the city center.
• Open: Daily from 30 November 2023 until 21 January 2024. Nicest in the dark.
• Entrance: FREE, unless you buy an app with the walking route or take a canal cruise .

Amsterdam Light Festival takes place every winter and is one of the best-known holiday season events in the city. The theme varies every year, but the concept is always the same – there are all kinds of lit artworks set in various public locations all over Amsterdam’s city center.

Because the light installations and their locations change every winter, it’s impossible to say in advance where you can find them. While you will probably run into a couple of them while walking around the city center, the only way to see them all is to download their app with the walking route. The entire route is usually around 7-8 km (4-5 miles), but you can also just do part of it.

TIP: The easier way to enjoy the Amsterdam Light Festival is by taking an evening canal cruise . If the weather permits, opt for an open-boat cruise . Since it rains a lot and you never know how the weather will turn out to be, most companies play it safe and use (semi) covered boats. This is one of the most popular Light Festival cruises departing near the Central Station.

If you want to do a lights cruise and visit the Amsterdam Winter Paradise, this 2-in-1 combi ticket will save you some money (and make it easy to book everything in one go).

Good to know: While the artworks of the Amsterdam Light are nice to see, they are just a few and scattered all over the city. Luckily, there are also regular Christmas lights to enjoy all over Amsterdam.

Most shopping streets and popular dining areas have really pretty light displays, so if you are looking for a fairytale-like Christmas atmosphere, you don’t have to worry – Amsterdam is really cozy at Christmas, especially after dark.

What is Open at Christmas Itself (24-25-26 December)?

Visiting Amsterdam during the holiday season, you might be wondering what to expect on Christmas Day itself and the days before and after that.

• December 24 – Christmas Eve – is a regular working day, but some places might close a few hours earlier than usual.
• December 25 – Christmas Day is an official public holiday in the Netherlands. Most businesses and shops are closed but the majority of tourist attractions in Amsterdam are open.
• December 26 – Boxing Day – is also an official bank holiday in the Netherlands. However, most shops and pretty much all tourist attractions are open on this day.

Most shops are closed on the 25th only. Some museums/tourist attractions are closed on December 25 but are open on December 26, some others remain open daily but have shorter opening hours, and some are open as usual. Most restaurants are open at Christmas, but if you are looking for a nice restaurant for dinner on the 24th or 25th, we highly recommend reserving a table in advance.

Below, you can find a list of some of the best tourist attractions in Amsterdam that are open at Christmas, including Christmas Day itself.

Here are some of the top places to visit in Amsterdam that are open at Christmas 2023 :

• Amsterdam Christmas Market (free entry).
• Amsterdam Winter Paradise ( book ahead !!!).
• Van Gogh Museum (you have to book tickets weeks ahead!!!).
• Rijksmuseum ( book ahead ).
• Heineken Experience ( book a time slot in advance ).
• Madame Tussauds ( more info and tickets ).
• Moco Museum ( more info and tickets ).
• Icebar Amsterdam ( more info and tickets ).
• The Upside Down Museum ( more info and tickets ).
• Rembrandt House Museum (daily, except 25/12 – more info and tickets ).
• Royal Palace (daily, except 25/12 – more info and tickets ).

PRO TIP: Book your tickets in advance, especially if you are traveling between Christmas and New Year! That way, you will immediately see what’s open, and at what time, and avoid disappointment. Tickets to the most popular attractions tend to sell out, in some cases even several weeks in advance.

Christmas school holiday is the peak season, so booking ahead is the only way to be sure that you can visit the places that you want to visit (and choose the time that best suits you).

Where to Stay

Staying at a beautifully decorated accommodation can make your Christmas visit to Amsterdam so much more festive. However, while most Amsterdam hotels have some kind of Christmas decorations, in most cases, it’s not much more than a few light guirlands and a Christmas Tree…

We haven’t visited all the hotels in Amsterdam, of course, but from the ones we did, Hotel Estheréa has by far the nicest decorations for Christmas. It’s already a very nice and cozy hotel but they really go out of their way to make it even more festive for the holidays.

Furthermore, their canalside location is very central, meaning that you can easily walk to all the main landmarks in 5-20 minutes. Dam Square and Royal Palace are just 5 minutes walk, the ice skating rink at Rembrandt Square – 15 minutes walk, and the main museums and the Christmas Market are about 20 minutes walk.

On a higher budget, Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky is also a wonderful option right on Dam Square. This hotel also has really nice Christmas decorations. The location couldn’t be more central and is perfect for shopping and some of the most popular tourist attractions such as the Royal Palace , Madame Tussauds , Ripley’s Believe It or Not! , and  Amsterdam Dungeon .

Is It Worth Visiting Amsterdam at Christmas?

As you can see, the Amsterdam Christmas Market is not exactly what you may have expected, especially if you have seen pictures or read about some of the nicest Christmas Markets in Europe .

So if Christmas Markets are what you are after, honestly, skip the Amsterdam. Instead, check out the Christmas Markets in Belgium , Germany, and Alsace in France.

However, there are so many other reasons to visit Amsterdam during the holiday season!

First, the main tourist sights are quieter and accommodation prices are much lower than in the warmer months. Furthermore, the city is really cozy with beautiful light displays and festive decorations, and everything is open (including Christmas Day itself!).

In addition, you can visit a traditional Christmas Market (even if small), go ice skating, and enjoy a festive atmosphere. So yes, it’s well worth visiting Amsterdam during the Christmas season .

That being said, if you can, avoid visiting right after Christmas and before New Year. This is the busiest time with big crowds everywhere, especially in the evenings on weekends and public holidays.

So, this is our guide to visiting Amsterdam during the Christmas season. I hope that it gives you a better idea of what to expect and what the holiday season is truly like in the Netherlands.

Amsterdam, now officially one of the most festive European cities , has so much to offer during the Christmas period. Gezellige lights, ice rinks galore, and steaming cups of hot glühwein … what more could you want? ☕

The city of ruthless bike lanes and endless head shops also hosts some of the cosiest, Christmassy events. Here are eight ultra- gezellig e things to do during Christmas in Amsterdam!

The Amsterdam Light Festival is an annual light-art festival that transforms the city centre into a glowing masterpiece!

Running from November 30 until January 21, it’s an inspiring way to take in the sights of the city. We all know how scenic the canals of Amsterdam are, so why not see them in a different light this Christmas? 

The light art installations are illuminated daily from 5 PM until 11 PM, so it makes for a perfect evening walk around Christmas with some warm cocoa in your belly. If you’re not much of a walker, you can also enjoy the festival by boat! 🚤

If you want to hear the Christmas classics from the comfortable seats of a concert hall, an evening spent in the plush seats of Amsterdam’s National Opera and Ballet , indulging in the wonder of ‘Silent Night’ played by the Netherlands’s most talented musicians is surely the way to go. 

Most churches in Amsterdam will also be hosting their own choir and Christmas Carol performances. The Nieuw Kerk on Dam Square is hosting a wonderful night of Christmas carols by candlelight on Christmas Day. We can’t think of a more beautiful way to celebrate the season! 🕯

In Amsterdam, you can spend your Christmas ice skating, building ice sculptures and even curling in the many ice rinks . Grab your warmest clothing and ice skates for a day filled with fun! Here’s just a few of them:

• Skate in front of the famous Rijksmuseum (although this one won’t be open for 2023)
• Whizz around a pop-up rink at Rembrandtplein
• Or hit the canals if they’re frozen over (at your own risk!)

What could be a better Christmas activity in Amsterdam than visiting some of the many wonderful Christmas markets ? Amsterdam has a selection of cosy Christmas markets to choose from, including:

• RAI Amsterdam: At Amsterdam’s huge convention centre, you’ll find a winter paradise; with live music, a skating rink, and even a festive Ferris wheel, you’ll be able to spend a whole day there while you shop the stalls. 
• Ice*Village Amsterdam: Located on the famous Museumplein, the Ice*Village can be found right beside the rink, where you can shop the stalls and get some warm mulled wine to keep your hands warm. 

Not a huge fan of ice skating? Instead of putting your poor limbs through the cold, you can catch a showing of Holiday on Ice . ⛸

At this wonderful Christmas-time event at RAI Amsterdam, you can see the performance of their new show, ‘A New Day’.

With a blizzard and fireworks incorporated into this fairy-tale of a love story, as well as artists suspended in the air and on the ice below, you’re sure to be on the edge of your seat. 🎇

If you’re in Amsterdam during the winter season, there is one thing you absolutely must do: Eat some good Dutch food! 

Come on, one of the best things to do in Amsterdam during Christmas is stuffing your face full of delicious and warm oliebollen .

A doughy delicacy sure to leave you full and your fingers covered in a healthy amount of grease and often powdered sugar, you can grab a serving of oliebollen from street stalls. 

Is this Dutch dish not enough for you? Then, treat yourself to some pepernoten before the season is up, or serve up a gourmetten dinner while you enjoy your stay in Amsterdam! 

You will be able to find oliebollen from street stalls and restaurants in Amsterdam, while you can buy a bag of pepernoten from most grocery stores. As for gourmetten… perhaps you’ll need to make some Dutch friends ASAP. 

Hold on, did you think we weren’t going to mention shopping in Amsterdam? 

During Christmas, the streets are covered in gezellige lights, and the atmosphere is just jumping with excited tourists and Dutchies roaming the streets.

With Christmas-themed decorations filling shop fronts and a weekly koopavond every Thursday, where shops open that extra bit later until 9 PM, shopping the streets will fill you with festive glee. 🎄

Make your way through Kalverstraat, PC Hooftstraat, and even migrate through to Rokin. Along the way, you’ll see many of your favourite major stores and a few special to Amsterdam. Need a snack? Visit Van Wonderen , where you can get some freshly made stroopwafels .

One thing the Netherlands has surely got down to a T — New Year’s Eve fireworks ! 

Any international or visitor to the land of cheese and clogs will be blown away by the fireworks that take place on the holiday. 

Normally everyone is allowed to set off fireworks, but it’s incredibly chaotic, so Amsterdam is putting a stop to it this year with a municipal ban on the lighting of fireworks by regular citizens. Instead, head on over to Museumplein for the ‘Amsterdam counts down to 2023’ fireworks and light show! 🎇

Spending the festive season here in the Netherlands means there are so many things to do during Christmas in Amsterdam. 🎄

The Netherlands is a country with rich and longstanding Christmas traditions . The Dutch figure of Sinterklaas served as a model for the American version of Santa Claus, and the name "Santa Claus" even comes the Dutch word. December is full of holiday celebrations, but the most important day is St. Nicholas' Eve on December 5, when Sinterklaas visits homes and delivers presents to children around the country.

As the capital and largest city, Amsterdam hosts a variety of holiday-themed events for visitors of all ages and predilections, from traditional tree lightings to a holiday circus.

Visit the Amsterdam Christmas Tree

Dam Square , the historic and cultural center of Amsterdam, adorns a 65-foot tree in December with nearly two and a half miles of LED string lights. With the Royal Palace and 15th-century Nieuwe Kerk church as backdrops, visitors flock to the square all season long to get a look at this majestic view. During the tree lighting ceremony on December 6, 2019, the plaza is filled with carolers, musical performances, and plenty of warm food and drink to celebrate the beginning of the holidays. As the city center of the country's capital, it's the most important Christmas tree in the Netherlands. If you miss the initial ceremony, you can visit the tree every evening from December 6 until early January.

Navigate the Canal Lights

Even though the winter months at this high latitude mean long nights, Amsterdam brightens them up with the Amsterdam Light Festival, running from November 28, 2019, until January 19, 2020. Local and international artists project elaborate light shows onto the buildings and bridges surrounding Amsterdam's iconic canals, turning this already-charming city into even more of a fairytale. The best part is that spectators can enjoy the light shows either from the quays or the water. For an unforgettable experience, reserve a dinner cruise and dine while you pass under these illuminated spectacles.

Play Around at Winter Paradise

The huge RAI Amsterdam center transforms at the end of each year into a winter wonderland known as Winterparadijs, packed with fun holiday activities for the entire family. Start with the carnival rides, like the Ferris wheel or 130-foot chair swing for views of the city. Later, rent some ice skates to glide around the massive ice rink, try your hand at curling, or experience snow travel as they did in yesteryear on a pair of cross-country skies. For the après-ski, head straight to the bar which serves cold-weather favorites like schnapps and mulled wine. After warming up with a beverage, sing your heart out at karaoke or dance away in the silent disco.

Winter Paradise is open daily from December 21, 2019, until January 5, 2020.

Shop at Christmas Markets

Christmas markets are a holiday staple of Northern Europe, and the Netherlands is no exception. Once December arrives, Christmas markets begin to pop up all around the country, and Amsterdam boasts more than a few.

Sunday Market is one of the most popular, located in the reformed historic gas building, Westergas. In December, this monthly event becomes the "Funky Xmas Market." As the name implies, shop for all types of quirky and fun gifts, many of which are designed and made by local crafters and artists. The Funky Xmas Market takes place on December 15, 2019.

Located in the same building just a week later is De Amsterdamsche Kerstmarkt , or the Amsterdam Christmas Market. Although it doesn't provide the same artsy and eccentric vibe as the Funky Xmas Market, the Amsterdam Christmas Market is larger and guests can ice skate, eat at food trucks, and enjoy live music all while shopping in the numerous stalls. Check it out in the Westergas from December 20–23, 2019.

For true fans of European Christmas markets, you must stop in Haarlem, a city about 30 minutes outside of Amsterdam. It's billed as one of the largest holiday markets not only in the Netherlands but neighboring Belgium and Luxembourg as well. Get lost in the labyrinth of over 300 stalls that overrun the city center, each one selling some type of traditional Dutch trinket. Carolers parade the streets to spread Christmas cheer and Dutch pea soup is available to warm you up from the inside. Visit the Haarlem market on December 7–8, 2019.

Experience the Absurdity of WinterParade

WinterParade is hard to classify. In some ways it's theater, in other ways it's a sit-down meal, and then it's also "that warm feeling of togetherness," according to the creators. Whatever you want to call it, this one-of-a-kind event will appeal to anyone who appreciates the ludicrous and silly. Enter and sit down with other spectators at one massive table that stretches nearly 400 feet, while servers climb the tabletop to serve drinks. In between each part of your three-course meal, expect to interact with dancers, actors, acrobats, musicians, and more. The allure of WinterParade is difficult to capture in words, so you'll just have to experience this crazy festival for yourself.

WinterParade has been canceled for 2019 but has plans to return in December 2020.

See a Show at the Dutch National Ballet

"The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" premiered in 2019 and quickly turned into one of the most successful Dutch theater productions of all time, already promised a return for the winter season of 2020. This adaptation of the famous ballet changes the setting from Christmas Eve in Germany to a night during the Dutch feast of Sinterklaas in early 19th century Amsterdam. "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" is playing from December 14, 2019, until January 1, 2020.

If you are curious about the behind-the-scenes workings of the National Ballet, sign up for a guided tour. See for yourself how stage sets, costumes, and props are all designed and crafted in the theater. Tour groups take place on Saturdays, and you must contact the box office for tickets.

Catch a Holiday Concert

The Concertgebouw is one of Amsterdam's most architecturally impressive buildings, delighting residents and visitors with renowned musical shows since 1888. Each winter, the concert hall hosts a variety of holiday-themed performances, such as the annual "Festive Concert" by the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra featuring holiday music from around the world. This year's show, on December 14–15, 2019, highlights music from Hungary and the U.S.

A special concert of "The Nutcracker" is specially adapted for families and recommended for everyone 6 years of age and older. Although the narration for this show is only in Dutch, English speakers can still sit and enjoy the music from this traditional holiday piece on December 15, 2019.

Take a Trip to the Circus

When the circus is in town in Amsterdam, it's an event not to be missed. The Wereldkerstcircus , or World Christmas Circus, is celebrating its 35th year and bringing together some of the world's most impressive acts for an unforgettable show. You'll be mesmerized by the awe-inspiring performances including acrobatics, live music, and stallion dressage. The Wereldkerstcircus isn't just your everyday big top circus, but rather a dynamic and interactive art show that unfolds before your eyes. See the magic for yourself at the Royal Theater Carré beginning December 19, 2019, until January 5, 2020.

The huge Christmas tree on Dam square is usually put up right after the Dutch celebration of ‘Sinterklaas’ (let’s say around December 8). And did you already spot the artworks from the Amsterdam Light Festival ? If you are visiting to celebrate Christmas in Amsterdam this year, there’s no need to figure everything out yourself.

Visit FABRIQUE DES LUMIÈRES DESTINATION COSMOS

Have you ever been to Fabrique des Lumières on the Westergas? Whether you are going for the first time or have already seen several of the immersive experiences… You don’t want to miss Destination Cosmos: The Immersive Space Experience and it can be seen until January 7 . This spectacular exhibition takes you to outer space. In about 40 minutes you will be launched from the bottom of the earth for a journey past planets, nebulae, gas clouds and supernovae and you will experience for yourself how enormous the universe is. Christmas market at the Museum square 

The ice skating rink at the Museumplein may not be happening this year, but the Ice Village Amsterdam Christmas Market is open. Full of winter chalets with artisan food and handmade (lifestyle) products. What I also like is that this market is also open on December 25 and 26. So perfect for a quick stroll before Christmas dinner, with your date or lover or the whole family if you don’t want to sit inside all day. This will be one of the nicest traditional Christmas markets in Amsterdam in 2023, which is also fun to visit with the kids!

Amsterdam Light Festival 2023/2024

For the 12th time, the Amsterdam Light Festival 2023 gives our city a magical glow this winter. Until January 21, 2024 you will find many light artworks in and around the center of Amsterdam! During the 12th edition of the Amsterdam Light Festival, the light artworks take you into the world of AI and its application to art. This year, the overarching theme of the Amsterdam Light Festival is ‘LOADING… Revealing Art, AI and Tech’ . This year the Festival Hub in the Hoftuin is extra fun, where a catering point will also be open between 4:00 PM and 9:00 PM. From Thursday to Sunday you can also reserve a special Amsterdam Light Festival 3-course dinner at Dignita before you go for a walk.

Because the boat trips and canal cruises around the festival are also back, there are Amsterdam Light Festival Boat Tours with different departure locations, types of boats and packages can be booked. You can book both a semi-open and a fully closed boat. I think the best time is always around 6:30 or 7 p.m. when it is really nice and dark. You can then go straight to a nice restaurant or a cozy pub!

This year this Christmas market, which is actually much more of a mega-large Christmas festival than a normal Christmas market, will be even bigger. With lots of live music, various bars, entertainment for the kids and more.

Sniff up some culture (with the kids)

Perhaps your good intention this year was to do something more often in terms of art and culture in the city. In any case, I can recommend everyone to buy a Museum Card for 2024 . Because it remains incredibly inspiring to occasionally visit the beautiful museums in Amsterdam. In addition, many cool art experiences have been added in recent years, like Fabrique des Lumières which I already tipped earlier. Below are a number of tips that I regularly visit:

• STRAAT , the street art museum in Amsterdam-Noord.
• MOCO , for Banksy and more modern art.
• Rijksmuseum , there are plenty of fun things for kids to do during the Christmas holidays.
• H’ART Museum , have you been to the ‘Hermitage’ yet after the name change? During the Christmas holidays they have extensive programming. For example, there is now an exhibition about Amsterdam Tokos.
• Allard Pierson , do you have kids who are already in that ‘Egypt phase’ like my own son? At this museum in Amsterdam they have a room full of mummies!
• Huis Willet-Holthuysen , during the Christmas holidays the kids can go out in the museum with their dog Sammie. Also nice: entrance for the kids is free. More info >>

1. Amsterdam Light Festival 

During Christmas in Amsterdam, stunning lights decorate the streets.

But more than just Christmas decorations will transform the city from November 28th, 2024 to January 19th, 2025.

The 12th annual Amsterdam Light Festival brings amazing artwork from both international and Dutch artists to canals, buildings, and squares. 

The best way to enjoy the lights is by taking  tours by bus  or  canal tours .

Some companies also offer Light Festival bike tours !

Since the sun goes down pretty early this time of year, there are also walking tours  you can take while it's dark out to admire the bright installations.

2. Take a Tour of the City & Popular Sites

There are a lot of great ways to tour Amsterdam, and although it might be chilly at this time of year, you might want to consider one of the following options.

One of the best and most affordable options is of course a pay-what-you-want walking tour .

Currently, there are free walking tours covering the main city center, the Red Light District, notable WW2 sites, and other interesting subjects.

If you're adventurous enough to brave the cold weather, you can experience Dutch culture by  taking a bike tour !

If you'd rather stay out of the wind,  hop-on hop-off bus tours  are a great way to explore the city with narration about Amsterdam's sights and history.

Popular spots to see on bus tour routes include  the Red Light District  and Rembrandtplein, which offers ice skating in December !

If you're interested in The Heineken Experience , there are bus or boat combo packages that include Heineken tickets!

The city also has popular  food tours .

Of course, you could take yourself on a tour of Amsterdam's Christmas markets and the Foodhallen for a great sampling of wintry street food.

There are several professional sporting matches to attend in Amsterdam this December.

If you've never seen a European football match, now is a great opportunity.

4. Take a Christmas Cruise

There are several Amsterdam cruise companies offering cruises down the canals all year.

But the city certainly takes on a different look and feel during the holiday season, and some cruise companies offer special services for Christmas.

One popular service is a Light Festival Boat Tour which takes you through the canals during the Amsterdam Light Festival.

If you have a large group, you can have up to 15 people on a Private Group Light Festival Boat Tour .

 5. Grab a Holiday Treat

There are several great festive treats you can find in Amsterdam during the holidays. 

One of the most popular options is a Windmill cookie or speculaas , similar to gingersnaps or gingerbread cookies.

You’ll find them in most bakeries in the city.

Here are a few other tasty snacks you might want to try:

6. Go to the Christmas Square at Museumplein

Throughout the year, there is a special open market called Museum Market hosted at the public space Museumplein located in the Museumkwartier neighbourhood.

And they have a special festive version of this event during the holiday season.

In addition to a wide range of unique products and special gifts, they also play Christmas music and there are plenty of stalls offering delicious holiday snacks and drinks.

The Christmas Market Amsterdam will be taking place from December 13th - 26th.

Amsterdam in December will host a few different concerts of varying genres. You can find them all here .

8. See Fireworks on New Year's Eve

In Amsterdam, you can find New Year’s celebrations all around.

At around 21:30, people gather at some of the city’s bigger public squares to ring in the New Year.

We recommend Leidseplein, Dam Square, Rembrandtplein, and Nieuwmarkt squares.

Just keep in mind that these spots are popular and will attract crowds earlier in the day.

Don't miss the amazing free fireworks sponsored by the City at Kop van Java (Java Island) along the IJ waters, just East of Central Station.

The festivities start at 23:00 on December 31st.

9. Christmas Tree Lighting in Dam Square 

Each year, a massive Christmas tree is placed on Dam Square.

At 20 meters high, it requires lots of lights, in this case, 40,000 LED lights. That is a four-kilometer string of lights!

The backdrop of the Royal Palace makes for great picture opportunities.

There will be Christmas carolers, lots of holiday foods available at stalls, and holiday jolliness all around!

The date for the lighting is December 8th.

10. Save with a Tourist Attraction Concession Pass

The easiest way to see more attractions in Amsterdam is by purchasing a concession pass. These tourist passes  work by allowing you to bundle admission tickets for heavy concessions.

You could get up to 50% off retail prices on several passes – or get in for free with an all-inclusive pass.

If you're planning on visiting as many paid attractions as you can over multiple days, an all-inclusive pass might be your best option to save the most.

If you're looking at just a few select museums and experiences, take a look at the build-your-own passes.

11. World Christmas Circus

Every holiday season, the World Christmas Circus returns to Theater Carre in Amsterdam. 

All of the acts in this circus are top-ranked performers who have been hand-picked by the Golden Clown Awards.

This is a very popular activity, and tickets tend to sell out well in advance, so we recommend planning your trip to the circus ahead of time.

12. Go to Holiday on Ice

From December 8th through January 7th, the festive ice skating show A New Day performed in Amsterdam. 2024-25 schedule is yet to be announced.

This event features 40 international skaters performing a variety of sophisticated moves at an Olympic level.

Tickets can be purchased through Groupon .

If you’re looking for something affordable and family-friendly, you won’t find much better!

13. Enjoy Church Concerts & Performances

If you’re looking for another opportunity to enjoy some classic Christmas Carols, several churches will be either hosting concerts or leading visitors in holiday songs.

In the past, some historic churches, such as Noorderkerk, have welcomed notable artists to perform special Christmas concerts.

Most churches will provide this type of service on Christmas Eve, so even if you don't want to worry about a ticket, there should be several free opportunities to enjoy this activity. 

14. Skate at the Rembrandtplein Ice Rink

Though not free, it is pretty cheap to go ice skating at the rink at Rembrandtplein.

Last year, for just €2.50 you could skate for the whole day on the ice (or €5.00 if you don't have your own skate).

The square is decorated for the holidays with Christmas trees around the skating rink.

There will also be food stalls serving traditional Dutch winter foods and mulled wine.

The rink typically opens in November and stays open into January.

TIP : There will be a free Christmas market right next to the ice rink with live entertainment, trinkets, clothing, and food for purchase.

15. See Raymonda

The well-reviewed ballet Raymonda performed from December 9th through January 1st. 2024-25 schedule is yet to be announced.

What is being called "the ideal new Christmas classic" and the "best production of the year is danced by the Dutch National Ballet.

The Dutch Ballet Orchestra will be providing the music for the performances.

16. Enjoy Some Holiday Shopping

Everyone needs to do a bit of holiday shopping at some point, and there are a lot of great places to find that last-minute gift in Amsterdam. 

If you’re looking for a wide range of items, consider going to De Bijenkorf in Dam Square. 

This department store sells a variety of things that would make perfect gifts. 

You may also want to consider stopping at the Magna Plaza, a shopping center that typically erects a Christmas tree at the center and includes a variety of interesting shops.

17. Go to the Ice Village at the Rijksmuseum

There are always Christmas markets in various locations around Amsterdam each year.

One of the most popular examples is the Ice Village, which opens up in front of the  Rijksmuseum  at Museumplein.

In addition to great holiday treats, this market also includes an ice rink where the family can enjoy some ice skating. Entrance is entirely free!

18. Discover Christmas Light Displays

When it comes to Christmas lights, the Amsterdam Light Festival is arguably the main event, and there will be installations all over the city.

However, in addition to this festival, you’ll also find plenty of interesting lighting displays in the shop windows and storefronts all throughout Amsterdam. 

No matter where you go, see some pretty cool holiday lights!

19. See Holiday Displays in the Red Light District

Just like everywhere else in the city, the  Red Light District  celebrates the holiday season as well. 

Cafes and coffee shops put up Christmas trees, the erotic museum dresses up a mannequin-like Santa Claus, and more.

No matter where you go in this part of town, chances are you’ll see or experience at least a few festive (and potentially erotic) attractions during the winter.

Planning a trip to Amsterdam in December means contending with less-than-ideal weather–but also fewer crowds and plenty of festive holiday cheer!

We loved our winter trip to Amsterdam, and would happily recommend a visit to anyone willing to trade tolerating cold, gray, and wet weather for a chance to experience one of the most iconic cities in Europe in one of its least-crowded seasons.

If you’re considering a December trip to Amsterdam, here’s everything you need to know, from what kind of weather to expect to the best things to do in Amsterdam in winter.

Visiting Amsterdam in December means contending with the coldest, darkest weather of the year–and while that definitely has its benefits, you need to come prepared for the weather!

In December, highs in Amsterdam reach an average of 43°F/6°C, and at night, lows plunge to an average of 36°F/2°C.

December is also the most humid and rainy month of the year in Amsterdam, meaning that the cold can cut right to the bone if you’re not dressed warmly enough and that you’ll need to prepare for the possibility of rain.

In Amsterdam, it rains an average of 15 days in December.

Occasionally, it snows in Amsterdam in December, but don’t count on it during your trip!

The sun rises around 8:45 AM and sets by 4:30 PM, so you’ll have very little daylight to work with, and you can expect most of that daylight to be spent covered in clouds.

Don’t expect to see a lot of blue skies or sunshine during a December trip to Amsterdam!

All of that being said, visiting Amsterdam in December definitely comes with enough rewards to be worth the cold and dark–but you’ll need to pack well (more on that below).

When visiting Amsterdam in December (or in January, for that matter), you’ll notice that the city’s famous canals have a bit of extra sparkle!

Each winter, they are decorated with some of the most innovative and stunning light displays that you can imagine.

While the Amsterdam Light Festival installations are striking from any angle, they’re best experienced from the water!

Go ice skating!

Without a doubt, enjoying some ice skating is one of the best things to do in Amsterdam in December.

If you get extremely lucky, you might even get to experience ice skating on the canals–but unfortunately, that’s not common in recent years, as they don’t have a tendency to freeze hard enough these days.

However, the picturesque ice skating rinks around Amsterdam offer a fun alternative!

Take a canal cruise.

Sound like a good way to freeze?

Don’t worry–many of Amsterdam’s canal cruises are heated and covered!

Pay a visit to the Christmas markets.

While Amsterdam’s Christmas markets aren’t the most overwhelming in Europe (and the fact that we traveled from Germany to Amsterdam on our trip probably didn’t help that impression), they are fun, cheery places.

If you happen to be visiting Amstedam in December and are looking to do a little holiday shopping and indulge in some sugary Dutch treats (stroopwafels, anyone?) , then head right to the Christmas markets.

If you’d like to add even more Christmas market fun to your trip, consider taking a day trip to another town near Amsterdam, too.

L eiden, for example, puts on a unique floating Christmas market each year .

Warm up in Amsterdam’s best museums.

Winter may just be the perfect time to take advantage of exploring Amsterdam’s museums, including the famous Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum .

Not only are the crowds generally lighter in Amsterdam in December than during the summer months, but exploring the museums will also give you the perfect chance to escape the cold weather for a bit!

If you’re looking for a quick but interesting museum to visit, I also loved visiting the Our Lord in the Attic Museum , which features a formerly hidden Catholic Church.

Bundle up and wander the canals.

No visit to Amsterdam is complete without aimlessly wandering through the Old Town to enjoy beautiful canal views, and there’s no reason to let cold weather keep you away!

In fact, there’s something even more special about the canals in December (aside from the Amsterdam Light Festival, it’s probably the fact that there are far, far fewer people around!).

Wear as many layers as you need to, and enjoy some time during your trip wandering through town.

Sample oliebollen.

These Dutch doughnuts are round, deep-fried, sometimes stuffed with raisins, and are absolutely delicious.

They’re a typical cold-weather snack and a must-try Dutch food during your winter trip to Amsterdam!

… and plenty of other warm Dutch dishes.

Oliebollen isn’t the only traditional Dutch winter food you need to be sure to add to your list of what to eat in Amsterdam in December!

Also considering trying snert (split-pea soup), stamppot (potatoes and vegetables), fondue (what better use for all that delicious Dutch cheese?), and Chocomel (Dutch-branded hot chocolate).

Plus, the usual year-round treats like Dutch pancakes, poffertjes, and stroopwafels are also extra-tasty when using them to warm up on a cold day!

In general, Dutch food lends itself to cold winter weather, so enjoy the chance to soak up coziness through cuisine!

Visit a brown cafe. 

Named for their dark, cozy interiors that are typically surrounded by wood-paneled walls, Dutch brown cafes are to Amsterdam what British pubs are to London: casual, comfortable spaces serving unpretentious food, good beer, and good company.

A casual meal in a brown cafe is a must when visiting Amsterdam in winter!

Peruse the cheese shops.

No one does cheese quite like the Dutch, and what better way to warm up in Amsterdam in December than to peruse several, sampling cheese along the way and picking out at least a few to bring home?

One of the best things about December in Amsterdam is simply that there are few people there!

As a fairly small city that is also one of the most visited cities in Europe , the tourist crowds in Amsterdam can be oppressive much of the year.

But in December, when people more commonly head to Germany for Christmas markets or to the Canary Islands for some sun, Amsterdam has some more breathing room, which makes it even more fun to visit.

Whether you have time for a weekend in Amsterdam or a full week, you’re bound to cover more ground in Amsterdam during a winter trip than a summer one.

There’s no way around it: hotels in the Netherlands, and in Amsterdam in particular, are far from the most affordable places that you’ll find in Europe.

The good news, though, is that while Amsterdam is expensive , December is one of the most affordable months to visit.

Expect to pay more for lodging in Amsterdam than for comparable stays in many other cities in Europe during winter, but much less than you would if you were visiting Amsterdam in, say, April .

If you have mobility limitations, be sure to read the description of your hotel carefully: very steep staircases are far from unheard of in Amsterdam!

Plan your daylight hours well.

With limited daylight to work with, plan wisely when visiting Amsterdam in December.

If you can, try to structure some of your indoor activities for after 4:30 PM –after all, it’s not “night”, but it sure will feel like it if you’re hanging out outside!

Break up your day with a variety of both indoor and outdoor plans.

Amsterdam is not only cold in December, but it also tends to be damp, making the cold weather even more uncomfortable.

Make the most of your trip to the city by mixing up indoor and outdoor activities, balancing your need to stay warm with your desire to make the most of the limited daylight hours.

Don’t expect German-level Christmas markets.

Amsterdam’s Christmas markets are lots of fun and full of tasty treats–but they aren’t the immersive, gigantic fantasylands featuring seemingly endless wood chalet stalls and mug rentals that you’ll find in places like Germany and Austria .

Luckily, Amsterdam is extremely well-connected to Central Europe by train, so if you do want to visit both Amsterdam and the best Christmas markets in the world in December, you can consider combining your trip!

Cologne, Strasbourg , Baden-Baden, Paris , Basel, and even Munich (plus so many more!) can all be reached within a day by train.

Plan ahead if you want to visit the Anne Frank House.

Visiting the Anne Frank House is an incredibly moving experience and one of the best things to do in Amsterdam in December (or any other month, for that matter), but it does require planning ahead.

The limited tickets for the house are released 6 weeks in advance and sell out extremely quickly.

Tickets must be purchased through the official website .

The good news is that by visiting Amsterdam in December, you have much better odds of snagging a ticket than someone planning a trip in, say, April .

Amsterdam doesn’t completely close on Christmas Day.

While in many European cities you’ll find all restaurants, pubs, museums, and other attractions closed on Christmas Day, Amsterdam stays a bit more open, with attractions like the Rijksmuseum remaining open on December 25.

Many places will be closed, of course, but with some museums open and a decent number of restaurants open as well, Amsterdam can be a great place to spend December 25 if you’re planning a trip to Europe over Christmas Day .

Lip Balm  — You know what’s not fun? Eating Dutch food with chapped lips.

Hand Sanitizer   — Christmas markets, in particular, tend to mean lots of finger foods, eaten outside, often not near a bathroom where you can wash your hands.

8 Magical Things to Do in Amsterdam in December (Local Guide)

Amsterdam in December is a truly magical time of year. Here are 8 of my favorite things to do as a local!

Amsterdam in December is the most magical time of year to visit with the city aglow in Christmas lights and outdoor holiday festivities. Between the Amsterdam Light Festival, holiday festivities and usual things to do in Amsterdam, you can have a jam-packed vacation or keep it chill.

From the best things to do in Amsterdam in December to what to wear this time of years, here are my favorite local tips on planning your trip during this time of year!

8 Things to Do in Amsterdam in December

Ride a boat to see amsterdam light festival.

Visiting Amsterdam in December is a great time to do holiday related activities. But the first thing to do is actually not holiday related at all!

My favorite winter activity in Amsterdam is take a boat tour on the canals to view the Amsterdam Light Festival. For a little over an hour, you sit on a boat sipping hot chocolate, gluhwein (mulled wine) or tea, and get taken around to view the amazing light installations around the city.

I’ve done the yearly Amsterdam Light Festival two ways, by myself on a bike and with a boat tour, and I prefer going with the boat tour because the tour guide explains each art installation to me.

Experiencing the Amsterdam Light Festival with context is more enjoyable, and for less than €20 a person, information and drinks makes this canal cruise one of the best value tours in Amsterdam.

Pro Tip: Make sure to book a boat that’s an open-air one or semi-open because it’s not as nice viewing the lit art displays from an enclosed boat with scratched up or foggy windows. This goes the same for really any canal tour; I always recommend going on an open-air boat!

Alternative Option: If you’d rather be on a more active boat, try this bike tour!

Eat and Drink Through an Amsterdam Christmas Market

The best Amsterdam Christmas Market to visit in December is the ICE Village at Museumplein. The square in front of the Rijksmuseum is transformed into a winter village complete with a fun ice skating rink!

The ICE Village also has tons of market stalls to shop at and holiday food and drinks to keep you warm as you walk around in holiday glee.

Another fun Amsterdam Christmas Market is the Winter Plaza at Rembrandtplein. Head here to try the traditional oliebollen, a fried snack only eaten at this time of year, waffles, sausages and of course, gluhwein (hot mulled wine).

Really, if you’re visiting Amsterdam in December, eating oliebollen should really be on your list.

Lastly, at one of my favorite parks in Amsterdam is the Funky Xmas Market at Westerpark . You can experience Westerpark’s iconic architecture and modern park space while shopping for funky Christmas gifts made by local artists, fashion designers and creatives.

Light Fireworks with Locals to Ring in the New Year

Update 11/05/21: In 2021, the city of Amsterdam said fireworks anywhere are not allowed. As a result, they will have a show at Museumplein. However, the sale/purchase of fireworks is still allowed so I assume people will set off their own fireworks. I have left the original text so you can what New Year’s in Amsterdam is usually like.

Locals and tourists alike celebrate New Year’s Eve right on the streets of Amsterdam in December. It’s not your typical drinking and partying though.

As soon as it starts getting dark, people of all ages, especially the teenagers who can’t wait, start lighting fireworks to bring in the new year. This is because on December 31st, ANYONE is allowed to light off fireworks in all of the Netherlands.

It’s truly an epic spectacle, and being from New York, I never thought I’d love celebrating New Year’s Eve outdoors because of how packed Times Square is when the ball drops. This is truly a Dutch tradition not to be missed and probably the most fun reason to visit Amsterdam in December.

The best place to see the fireworks is at the Skinny Bridge on the Amstel River. I like this spot the best because at midnight, when everyone lights their biggest and best fireworks, you can have a 360° view of fireworks in all directions!

The bridge itself can get quite crowded so you can go pretty much anywhere by it on Amstel. For example, I like to stand at this point.

If you want to buy fireworks to light off yourself, then they go on sale from the 28th to 31st of each year. You can check this list to see where you can buy them.

Word of Caution: If you are biking or with small children, be mindful of fireworks everywhere, even in your biking/walking path.

Welcome Sinterklaas to Amsterdam in December

The Dutch celebrate their very own version of Santa Claus on December 6th when Sinterklaas “arrives from Spain” to Netherlands in a steamboat. Once he disembarks, he parades through the streets while children sing traditional Sinterklaas songs.

Sinterklaas’ assistant, Piet, throws out candy and small, round, ginger-bread like cookies (aka pepernoten) to the crowd.

Where to See Sinterklaas: In 2021, Sinterklaas actually arrives in mid-November, but if you’re not here then, you can see him at an Amsterdam Christmarket!

Head to the Sinterklaas Market at Westergasfabriek for Sinterklaas fun in the beginning of December.

What to Do: Besides giving candy and gifts to children on Sinterklaas, chocolate letters are traditionally to each other as gifts on this day. You can find some at Albert Heijn, the main grocery store in Amsterdam.

Culture Shock Warning

As a warning, you may see a blackface Piet in the Netherlands for Sinterklaus.

Piet, formally known as Zwarte Piet/ Black Pete, is Sinterklaus’ helper who got soot on his face after going through the chimney.

To recreate him in real life, people paint themselves black to mimic the soot on his face.

However, as you can see, this is problematic.

Every year, many Dutch people protest to no longer have Zwarte Piet and only have Piet.

But there are people who fight against this. They say Zwarte Piet is the way he is because of soot and out of tradition and that it has nothing to do with racism.

In 2015, when I first moved to the Netherlands, I saw a blackface Piet. By the time 2020 came around, I only saw Piet!

I believe that you should not see him at all in Amsterdam, but if traveling in other cities or small towns, you might see him. So thought you might want to know.

Listen to Christmas Music at a Concert Hall

The Concertgebouw, a concert hall by Museumplein, has jazz, classical and even kids’ Christmas shows throughout December.

View the Christmas Tree in Dam Square

Spending Christmas in Amsterdam in December wouldn’t be complete without seeing the massive, illuminated Christmas tree in Dam Square. You can either go anytime from mid-December to early January to see the 40,000 energy-saving LED fairy lights lighting up Dam Square, or even better, you can go on December 14th to join the lighting of the tree festivities.

Usually, there is a specific time and hour when there are Christmas carol singers, musicians and seasonal and drinks to celebrate lighting the Christmas tree together.

Eat Comforting, Traditional Dutch Holiday Foods

Who doesn’t love eating as one of their favorite things to do in Amsterdam in December? With foods like oliebollen, glühwein, chocolate letters and pepernoten, it is one of the best places to indulge in sweet treats.

Oliebollen are basically Dutch doughnuts. They’re traditionally made of flour, yeast, eggs, sugar, milk and raisins and deep fried in oil.

Traditionally, they are eaten at midnight on the New Year so make sure to grab a few to ring in the new year.

You can find them at a stand in front of the Rijksmuseum or at the bakery at the end of the Ten Kate Markt. Even Albert Heijn, the main grocery store, will have them.

Glühwein is hot mulled wine with spices. Almost every bar and market will have this warm beverage to drink outdoors in the cool weather.

Chocolate letters are a fun, yummy gift given to each other on Sinterklaas . It’s a great souvenir to bring home too!

You can find chocolate letters at any candy store or at Albert Heijn, the main grocery store in Amsterdam.

Pepernoten are small, round gingerbread-like cookies eaten during this time period, especially on Sinterklaas day. You can find them at Albert Heijn, the main grocery store in Amsterdam.

Walk Around Jordaan

My favorite neighborhood to walk around in Amsterdam in December (or really anytime of the year) is Jordaan. It’s beautiful at night when all the usual street lights make the streets and bridges glow.

It’s even more spectacular in December because there are extra holiday lights up, and people have Christmas trees shining through their windows. It’s a super romantic and calming walk!

If you want a specific destination to go to in Jordaan, start out at Westerkerk and then walk over to Winkel 43 where you’ll get the best Dutch apple pie!

Weather in Amsterdam in December

In the Dutch capital during December, the weather leans towards cold temperatures.

Despite this, there is a chance of encountering clear blue skies and relatively mild conditions during this month but I’d count more on rain.

Generally Amsterdam is between 35-46° F or 2-7° C, which isn’t too cold, but once you add in that it rains about 13 days of the month, it can feel colder than it is with the dampness.

Use the app Buienradar to get a precise 15-minute update on when it’s going to rain or not. Check the weather every 30 minutes if you’re going to be out because the weather changes so quickly!

What to Wear in Amsterdam in December

Locals keep it pretty simple with what they wear. It is not a high fashion type of country. Girls even wear sneakers to the club instead of heels!

Keep it simple, and wear comfortable shoes for walking. Bonus if they are somewhat waterproof.

Make sure to wear a decent coat that is waterproof since it rains so often, and pack a windproof umbrella (here’s the one I have) because it can get quite windy here!

If you want to be on trend, then leopard and animal prints or bellbottoms are totally in fashion right now! Otherwise you will blend right in with dark jeans and a nice sweater.

I always love the quality-to-price ratio and style of the sweaters at Uniqlo, which is where I mainly shop.

If you are biking, then this warm hat is the best! It covers your ears and can help the rain stay out of your eyes.

• Where to Stay in Amsterdam

Enjoying these fun things to do in Amsterdam in December is even better if you have a nice, cozy place to stay. Based on the places my friends, family or even I’ve personally stayed at, here is where I recommend staying. There’s a hotel in Amsterdam for every budget!

W Amsterdam (5-star hotel) – My sister and brother-in-law stayed at the W Amsterdam and loved every bit of it. The location is central, the rooms are super comfortable and the pool/sauna/jacuzzi is quite amazing to use after a long day out in the city, especially with the Amsterdam weather!

Conscious Hotel (3-star hotel in multiple locations) – I love the Conscious Hotel brand. I personally stayed at the Vondelpark and Tire Station locations — once for my birthday and once while my apartment was being renovated– and I loved each time! They’re both a 3-star hotel with a cozy communal feel and gorgeous design.

They have four locations:

• Conscious Hotel  Museum Square
• Conscious Hotel  Westerpark
• Conscious Hotel  the Tire Station
• Conscious Hotel  Vondelpark

Airbnb Apartments or Private Rooms – If you want more of a local experience with a better value, I’d recommend getting an Airbnb apartment in either Oud-West or de Pijp. These are trendy neighborhoods where the working class in their 20s-40s like to live, eat and drink.

Flying Pig Hostel – My friend stayed in the Flying Pig Hostel when her and her friend were traveling together and looking for new people to meet. They always have great social events going on.

Something to know though– hostels aren’t necessarily cheaper than 2-star hotels in Amsterdam. For the pricing of hostels, even Airbnb apartments or private rooms can be a much better value so don’t automatically look at hostels thinking you’ll save money!

10 Things to Do in Amsterdam at Christmas

Enjoy the Christmas trees and celebrations, but don't forget to take a tour of the Vondelpark.

Christmas is the most atmospheric period of the winter in Amsterdam, it is a very celebrated celebration in Holland and attracts thousands of tourists every year.

As a result, there are many events that you can enjoy and that are focused on the gastronomic, festive and skiing . Examples are the Winter Paradise, the Christmas markets or the Ice Amsterdam. You also have the option to enjoy something more natural by going to Amsterdam's largest park, Vondelpark.

1. Traditional Christmas atmosphere in the Vondelpark

Vondelpark is a real beauty . With 45 hectares of hills, lakes and stunning viewpoints, it is the largest park in the city . Luckily for you, at this time of the year, it becomes a space reserved for those who want to experience Christmas like in the old days, especially in the eastern part of the park. This area of the park will be filled with food stalls, illuminated trees, live Christmas music and controlled bonfires to give that traditional touch to the celebration.

If the snow accompanies you on your Christmas stay in Amsterdam you can see how the landscape of this park becomes a marvel thanks to the harmony between the lights and the white snow .

2. Visit the museums that are still open

Almost all stores, museums and restaurants in Amsterdam will be closed during the Christmas season (except in the most touristy areas). However, some of Amsterdam' s best museums are open for visitors on those dates as well, so you can combine your visit with other Christmas activities. Here is a list of the main ones:

• Tickets to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam (and cruise) , which houses the largest collection of works by the artist and other contemporary painters such as Gauguin or Monet.

3. Be impressed by Amsterdam's Christmas tree

Dam Square, Amsterdam's historical and cultural center, adorns a 65-foot tree on Christmas with thousands of LED string lights . With the Royal Palace and the 19th century Nieuwe Kerk Church as backdrops, the views are simply spectacular .

During the tree lighting ceremony, the square is filled with carolers , musical performances, lots of food and hot drinks to celebrate the start of the Christmas holidays. Moreover, it is not only the most important tree in Amsterdam, but in the whole of the Netherlands.

If you miss the ceremony on December 25, don't worry, you can enjoy the lights also if you visit Amsterdam in January , even if you have to wait until January 6. You can also take advantage of one of the city' s sightseeing buses to tour the city center while discovering the Dutch Christmas.

4. Enjoy the best Christmas delights in Amsterdam

Many restaurants and cafes in Amsterdam are open at this time of year and often offer special Christmas menus , usually at a fixed price . It is a good idea to make reservations, as some offer services for a certain number of customers per day.

In any case the more tourist-oriented areas such as Damrak, Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein will always have something to offer you, even if it comes at the cost of a more inflated price. Many of these restaurants are usually posted with signs , so a walking tour the day before will be enough to make good choices.

They usually offer a wide variety of meats including duck, turkey, rabbit and pheasant. They also offer different types of salads , especially with marine touches. You can also try different Christmas sweets such as:

• Kerstkransjes : a very popular type of cookie.
• Kerststol : fruity Christmas bread.
• Kerstkrans : a wreath-shaped cake decorated with candied fruit and filled with sweet almond paste.
• Ene hagel cookies : a fragrant, flaky Christmas cookie.
• Speculaas : spiced cookies.
• Marzipan : a very typical sweet.
• Duivekater : a festive sweet bread.

5. Shopping at the Christmas markets

Christmas markets are a staple of northern European festivities, and the Netherlands is no exception . If you visit Amsterdam in December you'll see Christmas markets begin to spread throughout Amsterdam.

Sunday Market is one of the most popular, located in the renovated historic gas building, Westergas. At Christmas, this monthly event becomes the "Funky Xmas Market ," where you can buy all sorts of quirky and fun gifts , many of which are designed and made by local artisans and artists .

Mind you, the biggest market is the De Amsterdamsche Kerstmarkt , or the Amsterdam Christmas Market. While it doesn't provide the same artsy, eccentric atmosphere as the Funky Xmas Market, the Amsterdam Christmas Market is larger and guests can ice skate, eat at food trucks and enjoy live music while shopping at the many stalls.

Haarlem Market

In case these markets are not enough for you , then you should stop in Haarlem, a town distanced about 30 minutes from Amsterdam (I recommend this post about excursions from Amsterdam ). Here, in early December , one of the largest holiday markets is held not only in the Netherlands, but also including neighboring Belgium and Luxembourg.

Lose yourself in the maze of more than 300 stalls that invade the city center, each selling some kind of traditional Dutch trinket . Carols parade through the streets to spread holiday cheer and Dutch pea soup is available to warm you from the inside.

6. Experience Amsterdam's Winter Parade

The massive RAI Amsterdam center transforms at the end of each year into a winter wonderland known as Winter Paradise, filled with fun holiday activities for the whole family. Winter Paradise is open daily from mid-December to early January .

Here you can enjoy carnival rides, swings and Ferris wheels almost 40 meters high for spectacular views of the city, one of the most original things to do in Amsterdam at Christmas. You can also rent ice skates to glide around the huge ice rink . After a good skiing session you can head straight to the bar serving cold weather favorites such as hot toddies and mulled wines.

As if that weren't enough, you'll also find nightclubs and music venues .

7. Attend a Christmas concert

The Concertgebouw is one of Amsterdam's most architecturally impressive buildings , delighting residents and visitors with renowned musical performances since 1888. For more information on concerts, prices and schedules visit the event's website .

Every Christmas, the concert hall hosts a variety of Christmas-themed performances , such as the annual "Philharmonic Orchestra Holiday Concert" with Christmas music.

One of the concerts held in this building is "The Nutcracker" and is specially adapted for families and recommended for everyone over the age of 6. Although the narration of this show is only in Dutch, you can still sit back and enjoy the music of this traditional Christmas piece. Firstly because music is not about understanding, but about feeling. And second because all the musicals are projected onto one of the city's most historic buildings.

8. Take a trip to the circus

When the circus is in the city of Amsterdam, it is an event not to be missed . The Wereld Kerstcircus, or World Christmas Circus, is held in mid-December at the Royal Carré Theater. This event includes some of the world's most impressive acts for an unforgettable spectacle.

You'll be mesmerized by the breathtaking performances that include acrobatics, live music and stallion taming. The Wereld Kerstcircus is not just a big circus that is projected every Christmas Day, but rather a dynamic and interactive art show that unfolds before your eyes Enjoy the magic! 9. ICE Amsterdam

ICE Amsterdam is a unique program during the month of December organized in the open-air area of the Museumplein. Not only can you enjoy a night of ice skating under the artificial Christmas lights and surrounded by luminous trees, but also go to the various food stalls that will surround the rink outside and where you can take some of the Christmas delicacies . The event begins in early December and concludes on January 6.

In addition, there are always unexpected shows such as the appearance of the Three Wise Men, Christmas-related musicals and entertainment activities. If you are interested do not hesitate to book a ticket and check the schedules and prices on the ICE Amsterdam website .

As a tip, and given that the event is organized in the Museumplein, the area that houses some of the best museums in Amsterdam , it would not hurt to combine this event with a visit to the Van Gogh Museum or the Rijksmuseum .

10. Hortus at Christmas

The Amsterdam Botanical Garden, also known as the Hortus Botanicus , has for several years now introduced a new concept: Hortus at Christmas . On special evenings in late December and early January (17-22) , you can admire the plants in beautiful illumination. In addition, glasses of glühwein , a kind of spiced mulled wine very common at Christmas time, are served.

The nightly entrance fee for the Hortus by Light evenings is only €5.50 , so don't miss out! The impressive light shows are also combined with instrumental music . The entire space is air-conditioned, so it's also a great way to temporarily escape the cold outside .

Amsterdam's Christmas weather

It is difficult to prepare for Amsterdam's Christmas weather, as temperatures can vary drastically from day to day and even from hour to hour. Generally, winter temperatures are cold, often dropping below freezing at night, but warming slightly during the day.

It's generally not the kind of weather to be outdoors for too long, so you'll want to bundle up. You can expect gray skies and few hours of natural daylight.

Precipitation, either snow or rain, depending on the temperature, is common during the winter , but rarely heavy. You will most likely encounter cloudy skies and bouts of rain , but not enough to put a damper on your trip! When visiting Amsterdam in winter , you should pack your suitcase well. Bring a raincoat, a travel umbrella, boots, gloves and scarves.

Winter (outside of the Christmas and New Year period which sees another increase in tourism) is the ideal time to plan your itinerary to Amsterdam, as from Christmas on wards the tourist flow starts to increase considerably and with peaks on the important days of Christmas.

Don't leave everything to the last minute even if you plan to visit Amsterdam for just one day or Amsterdam for two days , as prices for accommodation and flights are a function of supply and demand, not the length of your stay .

Welcome to winter in amsterdam.

Amsterdam in winter is a funny old time. It's cold. It's quiet compared with other months. It's festive... but not too festive. As in when I return to London in December, I am always struck with how much more festive and Christmassy the city feels in comparison, and yet, there is something about the understated festive spirit of Amsterdam in December that is appealing to me.

I also don't hate how it's a longer lasting subtle festive atmosphere, in that unlike London and other places, it also quite successfully spills into January and February, which everyone who lives in the Northern Hemisphere will know is a good thing, because these are the HARDEST months of winter.

The good news for visitors is that Amsterdam in January and February are actually a really good time to visit if you want to avoid the crowds (and aren't afraid of cold weather!) because this is the time you will have your pick of hotels, you will have much shorter (or no!) queues for the most popular museums, and there will be plenty of room in Amsterdam's wonderfully cosy bars, cafes and restaurants. Christmas is also a fantastic time to come to Amsterdam, and I go into more detail why as well as share a few extra festive fun things to do in Amsterdam at Christmas.

Things to Know About Amsterdam in Winter

UPDATE FOR 2021: Before you plan your trip to Amsterdam this winter make sure you read about the most up to date details about what's open to tourists and what restrictions there may be. These currently include distancing and limited capacities on tours and in museums, restaurants, bars, as well as on public transport. You must also wear a mask in shops and on streets and markets in busy areas of Amsterdam (e.g. in the Red Light District and on Albert Cuyp Market) as well as on public transport in Amsterdam.

You will also need to book ALL museum and attraction visits in advance so be sure to check websites and the latest details before planning a trip to Amsterdam this summer. Even if you have an Iamsterdam City Card (which I highly recommend) you will need to book a date and time slot for each museum or attraction (you can do this without paying any extra charge).

Things to do in Amsterdam in Winter

You may be surprised to know that there are some things to do in Amsterdam that can only be done in the winter. The most special and famous of these is arguably Amsterdam Light Festival (see below), but there are also several festivals that only take place in winter months. More than this, there are local Dutch traditions - and foods! - that are best tried in winter months (or are only really available then).

Below you can find a long list of general things to do in winter in Amsterdam based on my personal recommendations and the activities I enjoy doing most in winter months in Amsterdam. Following this list you will find a month-by-month breakdown of some of Amsterdam's best winter events and festivals, and at the end I offer up some advice about what the weather is really like and what you should pack or wear when in Amsterdam in winter.

Take your pick of Amsterdam's hotels

As I wrote in this post about choosing your perfect time to visit Amsterdam , the winter months are the quietest in Amsterdam in terms of tourist numbers so you can enjoy some pretty special deals and enough hotel availability to choose from the most popular hotels and hostels.

I've listed all of my favourite hotels and hostels in Amsterdam for all budgets and tastes here , but the following are hotels I think would be love and cosy for a winter's stay in Amsterdam: Waldorf Astoria , Pullitzer Hotel , Hotel Ambassade , The Dylan Hotel , and Banks Mansion , for a little luxury. There's also Consicous Hotels in Westerpark and Vondelpark , The Hoxton Hotel , The College Hotel , The Tire Station , the very new Sir Adam , and the Volks Hotel for a little affordable style, and Citizen M , Meininger Hotel , The Student Hotel , Cocomama , and Generator Hostel for some very decent budget accommodation that is also cosy to hang around in when you need to warm up or grab some downtime between sightseeing.

Christmas Lights at Bijenkorf

Amsterdam's answers to London's Oxford Street lights going on in the run up to Christmas, the Christmas lights and decorations inside and outside Bijenkorf are where locals and visitors alike go to soak up some sparkly sights and festive atmosphere. The Bijenkorf is Amsterdam's premier department store so it's also where you go to spend some serious money - you have been warned! The Christmas tree in Dam Square outside Bijenkorf is considered Amsterdam's main Christmas tree so definitely worth seeing.

Ice-skating

Let's get the most obvious thing you can do in Amsterdam in winter out the way shall we? It may be cheesy but it's also a whole lot of fun and a sure way to get in the festive spirit or have a little fun on a cold day...or break your ankle.

The most famous place to go ice skating in Amsterdam is on the temporary rink set up in front of the Rijksmuseum , called Ice*Amsterdam, and indeed it's a pretty special place to glide around, or shuffle awkwardly from one side of the rink to the other.

Kids and adults in need of some support (literal!) they will give you chairs, and of course you can hire skates. It's strongly advised that you book a time to go ice-skating in advance . You can also find some other places to go ice skating in Amsterdam here .

Eat oliebollen

After you've slipped and slided your way around the rink for a little while you'll be feeling peckish. The good news is you don't have to stray too far from Museumplein to find the most classic of all wintery Dutch snacks. Oliebollen are effectively fried balls of doughy goodness, normally with apples and raisins in them, but they can also come with other yummy fillings.

You'll find stands all over the city but there is nearly always one on the edge of Museumplein opposite Concertgebouw in the run up to Christmas and shortly after too.

Other winter treats to look out for are pepernoten (small round spiced biscuits that you (okay, I) eat by the handful at this time of year), speculaas cookies and  Kerststol (a fruit Christmas bread loaf).

Go cheese tasting

If hot sweet treats aren't up your street, then I think winter is the perfect time to go cheese tasting in Amsterdam. There are several places you can do this from the touristy Amsterdam Cheese Museum to more specialist shops that have been dealing in cheese for generations.

My favourite place is Abraham Kef Fromagerie which hosts cheese and wine tasting sessions for individuals and groups, and with a menu that features both Dutch and international cheeses, it's a very yummy way to spend an afternoon.

Alternatively, if you want to do some cheese (and wine!) tasting while also going on a cruise of Amsterdam's most famous canals that is absolutely possible (because of course it is!). This two hour cheese- and wine-tasting canal tour should sort you out!

Christmas Markets

Not as famous as its German or even Belgian neighbours but there are some very decent Christmas markets to be found in the Netherlands. In my honest opinion, Amsterdam isn't necessarily home to them as they tend to be quite a touristy, over-priced affair, however, they still have the potential to charm if you don't mind paying twice as much as usual for a small cup of mulled wine or hot chocolate.

Go see a beautiful Christmas Tree

If markets and Christmas lights don't make you feel Christmassy, then this should. Go find one of the most beautiful Christmas trees in Amsterdam.

In addition to the one just outside Bijenkorf as mentioned above, you will find the most impressive Christmas trees in the most luxurious hotels in Amsterdam (the Amstel Hotel, the Waldorf Astoria, the Conservatorium to name a few) and in other shopping centres and public spaces like Magna Plaza and inside Bijenkorf too.

Amsterdam Light Festival

As mentioned briefly above, Amsterdam Light Festival is reason enough to visit Amsterdam in the winter months, and it's a highlight of our year certainly.

The best way to see the lights is by walking the route one evening, while wrapped up warm, taking your time to read about each installation and of course, popping into bars and cafes along the way to stay warm and errr, lubricated.

You can also cycle it like we did , or you can get on one of the special evening canal tour cruises , though personally, I don't really think you can enjoy all the light installations the same way, and it's definitely not advisable if you want to take decent photos as you won't always be in the best position.

Warm up in a cosy Dutch "brown bar"

Speaking of popping into a bar, the Dutch call their oldest, most traditional pubs 'brown bars', typically because they were (or are) made of wood. Dotted all over Amsterdam, these brown bars are where you'll find local (and international) beers on tap, the famous Dutch genever on offer (a distant cousin of gin), and a choice of borrel snacks, i.e. bar snacks to accompany your drink.

My favourites are the very unhealthy bitterballen (literal translation is bitter balls but they are effectively small deep-fried balls of creamy-potatoey-beef stew covered in breadcrumbs).

Amsterdam's most famous brown bars are In 't Aepjen in the Red Light District (considered one of the oldest bars in the city) and Cafe Papegaai because it's apple pie is one of only a few that will rival what I think is the best Dutch apple tart in Amsterdam from Winkel 43 .

Visit a spa

You probably weren't expecting to read about going to a spa in this post about winter in Amsterdam, but what better time to spend an afternoon warming up in a sauna, steam room, swimming pool, or all three.

Treat yourself to a massage or other treatment to detox a little (before or after your brown bar crawl!) or just get spa access and enjoy soaking in some warm water or simply lying in a plush white robe. Bliss! My favourite hotel spas for all the above are  are the spas in Waldorf Astoria, the Conservatorium and the Amstel Hotel.

Get romantic for Valentine's Day

Love it or hate it, Valentine's Day is a much-needed break from the winter blues for many people and while Paris and Venice often get all the praise for being Europe's most romantic cities, I don't think you can get much more romantic than Amsterdam on Valentine's Day.

Again it's a good time of year to visit with tourist numbers being lower than other times of the year and the city is full of plenty of romantic hotels, many of which will be offering special Valentine's Day offers. (My choice would be a lavish boutique hotel like The Toren , The Dylan , Breitner House , or Hotel Estherea , or I would go for something really memorable and quirky, like the hotel room in a crane or the city's smallest hotel .)

The city is also full of great date ideas, like having a drink or seven in a rooftop bar or an ice bar, enjoying a games night at arcade themed bar TonTon Club, the A'Dam Tower lookout or swing, a drink in Amsterdam's Ice Bar (very wintery!), or simply hiring a tandem bicycle to go on a tour of the city's beautiful streets and green parks, which may also have some tulips already if you're lucky.

There are also lots of fabulous romantic restaurants to choose from, my favourites being the Brasserie at Hotel Ambassade (book well in advance to get a canal-view table by the window), Gartine which does brilliant vegetarian lunches, dinners and afternoon teas, or Rijks Restaurant which is just next door to the city's most famous museum and offers some of the best food, cocktails and service in the city. Man, I hope my partner is reading this in time for next Valentine's Day in Amsterdam!

Eat heart- and stomach-warming Dutch food

Winter is the time when I suddenly forget to count calories and I fill my cold body with heart- and stomach-warming stodgy food. Lucky for me living in Amsterdam, Dutch specialities are among the stodgiest of the stodgy and winter is when you can really appreciate these dishes the best way.

Keep your eyes and ears open for stammpot (mashed potato and veggies served with sausage), hutspot (boiled and mashed carrots, onions and potatoes traditionally served with meat and gravy), or erwtensoep (pea soup) which is a much heartier dish than it sounds as it's served with chunks of veggies and sausage.

Other dishes that will warm you up include those borrowed (or ahem stolen) from former colonies; the rijsttaffel is a tapas of Indonesian dishes served with rice, roti kip translates as chicken roti and is a delicious Surinamese curried dish of an unsettling green colour served with beans and possibly rice, and most Dutch people have the spiced rice dish  nasi goreng  and kip sate (chicken satay) as regularly cooked meals at home.  

Hit up ALL the museums

Again because of lower visitor numbers, winter is really the time to come to Amsterdam if you're hoping to squeeze in as many museums as possible during your visit. While it's now necessary to book all museums  in advance, including the most popular ones like Rijksmuseum , Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House, I have long recommended it as best practice to avoid queues and make the most of your time in Amsterdam. With lower visitor numbers in Amsterdam in winter, you can also enjoy fewer crowds inside the museum as well as no queues to get in!

Museums are a great way to warm up when you're walking around on a cold day. My favourite museums in Amsterdam are Rijksmuseum , Stedelijk Museum (for contemporary art and design), Tassenmuseum (Museum of Handbags and Purses) , Versetzmuseum (The Resistance Museum) and FOAM (Photography Museum of Amsterdam) . 

If you are going to go on a serious museum crawl, and the cold temperatures put you off cycling or walking too much, then I highly recommend getting an I amsterdam City Card so you can get free museum entry and free public transport. Find some tropical warmth in Hortus Botanicus

Admittedly this is not the best time to visit Amsterdam's botanical gardens because there won't be many colourful blooms but I quite enjoyed my late winter visit to Hortus Botanicus, not least because it was virtually empty, and it was warm inside the huge greenhouses which are home to plants, trees and cacti from all over the world. I was also surprised to see some butterflies had already hatched inside the butterfly house and those that hadn't were very impressive chrysalises to have a look at. 

Christmas and Sales Shopping

While Amsterdam is certainly not the shopping mecca that perhaps London is - and I personally prefer it that way, I think it's fair to say that the shopping in Amsterdam is still pretty good and while it's definitely busy in the weeks preceding Christmas it won't be anything like the crowds you find on Oxford Street in London, for example.

The main shopping street in Amsterdam for high street shops is Kalverstraat (which I honestly try to avoid at any time) but if Christmas or sales shopping is your thing (and all respect to you if it is - you're made of sturdier stuff than me!) then this is where you need to go to find both Dutch and international high street stores.

For quirkier, more unique and independent boutiques and a prettier area to wander around, head to the 9 Streets (9 Straatjes) or take a stroll down Utrechtsestraat, Haarlemmerstraat or Rozengracht to name but a few streets lined with more unusual shops and stores.

Again, like Christmas shopping, the January sales aren't as huge a deal as maybe they are in UK and USA but most shops will definitely have some reductions and special offers so come armed with a credit card... or not depending on your budget!

Go to a classical music concert at Concertgebouw

With special Christmas-themed concerts lined up in the run up to the main event, throughout winter there is an impressive line-up of performers and performances at Concertgebouw, Amsterdam's most famous classical music venue which sits looking out over Museumplein.

But don't think you have to go before Christmas, there are always shows to choose from throughout the year but I just happen to think that it's a really lovely, cosy way to spend an evening in winter, and they don't just have concerts in the evening. The Sunday morning concert is a very popular and lovely way to start a great day in Amsterdam.

Go to a jazz show

Alternatively, cosy up one evening with some jazz. While Rotterdam is more famous for its jazz music venues, concerts and festivals (the brilliant North Sea Jazz Festival), Amsterdam still has its fair share of good jazz cafes and venues including the most  famous concert hall-sized Bimhuis, the much more intimate Jazz Cafe Alto, and the packed full of music memorabilia Bourbon Street.

Pure Winter Markt

I make no secret about being a huge fan of Pure Markt's outdoor markets which rotate each Sunday through a number of Amsterdam's parks. While they do officially stop for the cooler months, there are a few special editions of Pure Markt Winter that are held in December.

Go to eat freshly-cooked street food inspired by all over the world and check out a wide range of handmade and artisan goods. Also there will be a bar and live music! Find out when the winter editions of Pure Markt will be on.

Go to a comedy show (in English!)

While I believe good comedy can be enjoyed at any time of the year, if there's ever a time we need warming up from the inside out through laughter it's possibly in winter, especially in the traditionally quite dreary month of January. Amsterdam is home to a number of English-speaking comedy nights and the most famous of which is the nights at Boom Chicago and the Comedy Cafe.

Watch out for fireworks!

My last suggested thing to do in Amsterdam in winter is less an activity and more a thing to do in order to stay safe. One of the few times I wish I didn't live in Amsterdam happens on New Year's Eve, and it's because the whole city turns into a huge, disorganised, chaotic, highly flammable (and of course fairly drunken!) fireworks display.

This sounds amazing (and is if you love pyrotechnics and don't have sensitive ears or mind risking life or limb for a few "oohs" and "aahs"!) but for me, it feels and sounds and looks a bit like living in a war zone. The reason this happens is that the country relaxes fireworks laws especially for New Year and most take full advantage setting off the first rockets once the sun goes down at around 4 or 5pm and then this continues all the way through until midnight when of course it goes up a notch. I consider it a quiet New Year's Eve if the sky is quiet and dark enough for me to sleep around 2 or 3 in the morning.

Fireworks are let off from outside front doors on the street, off of small balconies and from roof terraces - basically anywhere! Miraculously, my son has (mostly) slept through this night for the last three years, but I still dread the noise and subsequent disruption and mess on the streets the morning after, which has without fail included a burnt out car somewhere in our neighbourhood (I wish I was joking). Also this year, we'll have a newborn so who knows what they will be like! 

So if you're heading to Amsterdam for New Year, I encourage you to be very cautious and careful about moving around the city, and to pack ear plugs if you want to get more than a few hour's kip!

Amsterdam in winter, month by month

Now let's get down to some finer detail about what winter is like in the Dutch capital, specifically month by month, highlighting a few events, festivals and traditions that you should know about for Amsterdam in December, January and February.

I've not included specific dates for each listing as they will change year by year, so you should go to the links I've included for more information and/or do a quick Google search to confirm the finer details! And remember in our current times, it's very likely that many of these events are either cancelled, scaled back (restricted numbers) or moved to online, so please do keep this and all social distancing rules in Amsterdam in mind.

Amsterdam in December

December in Amsterdam is the busiest of all the winter months with people wanting to soak up some festive spirit which is sprinkled everywhere thanks to the Dutchies starting Christmas early with the arrival of Sinterklaas (their distant relative of Father Christmas/Santa Claus) on 5th December. I also happen to think Amsterdam at Christmas - even Christmas week - is a great time to visit because the festive season starts so early.

So yes, in Amsterdam in December you can expect lots of Christmassy events, some of which are listed below or above, but just in general December is a great time to wonder the streets of Amsterdam and spot Christmas trees and fairy light in- and outside peoples' houses. And if you want a good reason to come to Amsterdam in December, below are some very fun and festive events.

WinterParade

The parade or Parade (pronounced Pah-rah-duh) comes to Amsterdam twice a year, and both are highlights of many locals' calendars. Part-circus, part-theatre, part-eat, drink and be merry, this festival is very popular and so if you're curious about what it's got in store you should get tickets early !

International Queer and Migrant Film Festival

I mentioned in my Amsterdam in autumn post that autumn is really the season of film festivals in Amsterdam (as I believe it is the world over) however this one is hardly an afterthought as it is a film festival that celebrates two minority groups with some of the world's best cinema. Valhalla Festival

If you missed ADE (Amsterdam Dance Event) in October, don't worry, Valhalla Festival should scratch your dance music itch during this tw0-day carnival- and circus-inspired dance festival held at the RAI convention centre just before Christmas.

Tango Train

If you like your music a little less electronic and a lot more Latin-influenced, time your visit to Amsterdam in December with the Tango Train festival . This celebration of tango music is certainly a niche affair but is a much treasured event among those - locals and internationals - who adore this classic dance.

Meesterlijk

If you happen to have a thing for design AND food and are especially interested in the place where they meet, then Meesterlijk is the December festival for you. Meesterlijk is the Dutch word for "masterfully" so that hints at the standard of crafts, design, applied art and food creativity that will be on show.

Hosted in the fun Westergasfabriek venue (an old gas depot in Westerpark on the western outskirts of central Amsterdam) come hungry, come curious, come ready to be inspired! You can find out more here .

Amsterdam in January

When I used to live in London, I was always very aware of how hard January is. Nobody has any money left from Christmas, everyone has to go back to work after a short break, and the weather is still flipping freezing. For some reason, I'm not as aware of this low mood in Amsterdam in January.

Maybe it's because I'm more active (I'm proud to say I cycle all year round and find cycling a great way to beat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)) or maybe it's because now I'm a parent I find the Christmas and New Year period quite intense (and hard work!) so it's actually quite nice to get back to the old routine... Or maybe it's because Amsterdam in January is when a few fun things happen, as listed below...

National Tulip Day

It's hard to believe that January is the time when the tulip mania arrives in Amsterdam but it is. As the official launch day of tulip season, Nationale Tulpendag turns Dam Square into a make-shift garden centre and there is a tulip for every registered resident of Amsterdam.

Traditionally Amsterdammers are then invited to come and pick up their own tulip to plant in their garden (or a window box on their balcony!) though sadly we've not yet done this... Maybe next January! Either way, the carpet of tulips in Dam Square is a lovely scene to witness in the centre of Amsterdam.

L&B Whisky Weekend

Who knew that Amsterdam has a whisky festival? Certainly not me until I started doing some research for this article, most likely because I'm not a huge fan of whisky, however, I did know that Amsterdam has a few whisky bars, the most famous of which is Whisky Cafe L&B who are the proud organisers of this festival.

Held over three evenings in the middle of January, L&B Whisky Weekend  is where you can try whisky and whisky products by both long-standing makers and new kids on the block, and it's definitely one way to warm up during winter in Amsterdam! Find out more and buy tickets here .

IMPRO Amsterdam

If you thought a whisky weekend in Amsterdam was a bit unusual, then wait until you hear about IMPRO Amsterdam a festival dedicated to the art of improvisational theatre. While it may not sound like everyone's cup of tea, this event really does seem to have something for everyone because performances (including both Dutch and international actors) literally have no script so they can go any which way, and of course, no two shows will ever be the same. Amsterdam Hotel Night

The sibling to the very popular Museumnacht (Museum Night) Amsterdam Hotel Night is where several of Amsterdam's hotels open up to host parties and events one night, inviting non-guests to explore the premises without risking being escorted out by security. Many of Amsterdam's hotels are among the most beautiful buildings in the city so this is not a night to be missed if you like partying in swanky locations you may otherwise not be able to afford to stay in!

Go watch the Christmas tree bonfire

So what happens to all the Christmas trees once January rolls around? Well, they normally left on the street by their once festive owners to then be collected by neighbourhood children who can take them to council collection points and get paid (50 cents a tree I believe is the going rate), or they get picked up by the free council collection service. Alternatively, you can load up your Christmas tree on your bike and take it to Museumplein one dedicated evening in January where there is a huge bonfire to get rid of them. De kerstboomverbranding, as it's called in Dutch, is possibly not the most environmentally-friendly way to dispose of Christmas trees but it's quite a fun tradition in the city and is definitely worth witnessing if you're visiting at the right time.

Amsterdam in February

For some I can see how Amsterdam in February is actually worse than Amsterdam in January. It's still cold and there's no end to winter in sight. The month is short but yet it drags on and on, and then there's all the pressure of celebrating Valentine's Day and those new year's resolutions are getting harder and harder to keep.

In reality, February is a great time to visit Amsterdam because the crowds are still missing from key tourist spots and sights, the daylight is lasting a little longer each evening, and there are some great hotel deals and offers to take advantage of and there are a number of fun and happening events worth being in Amsterdam for. February is also my birthday month so I personally try to always get out and do as much as I can in Amsterdam. And these are some of the things happening in February in Amsterdam.

Chinese New Year

Many visitors are surprised to find out that Amsterdam has a China Town (especially as it's slap bang in the middle of the Red Light District ) but it's a very real and thriving community and well worth exploring if you find yourself there.

A great time to do so is during Chinese New Year (the dates of which vary year on year so be mindful of this!) as the streets will be lit up with lanterns and parties will spill out of restaurants and shops too. China Town is also where you can find some of the city's best Asian food restaurants so let that be a tip you remember!

Little Italy Taste & Travel

Celebrating the tastes and traditions and landscape of Italy, this three-day festival is where you will find a slice of la dolce vita (or pizza) in central Amsterdam. Hosted again at Westergasfabriek, here you'll find Italophiles gathering to try regional foods, wines and produce, while also inspiring your next Italian holiday.

You may not think you wanted to come to Amsterdam to get a fix of Italian life but if the weather is terrible and you're partial to pasta or Italian wine, you could do a lot worse than spending a day here.

Sonic Acts Festival 

Because I can't think of a better or more succinct way to describe the Sonic Acts Festival event in Amsterdam in February , here is what their website says about the event, "a thematic festival with a strong focus on contemporary and historical developments at the intersections of art, technology, music and science".

To my mind that means the festival which is held across a number of venues in the city will feature music and art inspired by art and science, but almost certainly isn't limited to that. I guess the only way to find out what it's really about is to go to the festival itself!

Chocoa Festival

Chocoa is another chocolate festival in Amsterdam (after autumn's Origin Chocolate Event ) and I have no complaints about this; there should definitely be at least one every season.

This one welcomes all stakeholders in the chocolate industry from cocoa farmers and producers to chocolate connoisseurs to share their love of this confectionery that will also tempt passing visitors to have a little nosey (and of course a sample!) of the chocolates on offer at Beurs van Berlage, one of Amsterdam's most famous buildings. Weather in Amsterdam in Winter

Let's not sugarcoat it. The weather in Amsterdam in winter is cold, sometimes VERY cold. This is western Europe after all and Amsterdam is not a million miles (or even 100 miles!) away from the North Sea.

So when travelling to Amsterdam in winter, come prepared for cold temperatures - below freezing at night is not uncommon in the peak of winter - chilly winds, and changeable weather, i.e. think layers, and have a warm coat that ideally is also waterproof.

Hats, gloves and scarves are essential (especially if you're cycling as that can add to the windchill) and I highly recommend warm, and practical shoes for walking around. Amsterdam doesn't get as much rain as other European cities but it can certainly get some so packing an umbrella is not a bad idea.

One thing worth mentioning is that the days are very short in Amsterdam in winter. Admittedly, not as short as those in the Nordic countries, but I still notice a small difference between Amsterdam and London in terms of when the sun comes up and goes down, i.e. in middle of December it's dark by 4pm or shortly after, and you can expect it to still seem quite dark at 8 o'clock in the morning.

The big question people often ask me about winter in Amsterdam is whether it will snow, and/or will the canals freeze over? I have lived in Amsterdam for several winters now and it's only snowed in Amsterdam three times, and the canals have only ever frozen over once during our many years living here, which was early in 2018. That was only thanks to the so-called Beast from the East, which brought temperatures of below freezing - day and night - for over a week.

What I mean to say by this is that it's highly unusual for the canals to freeze completely allowing you to go ice skating on them (and even this year it was only for a limited time - about 48 hours) so please don't book your winter trip to Amsterdam expecting for that to be a reality!

What to pack and wear in Amsterdam in Winter

As mentioned above, having a waterproof, warm coat and shoes, and all the necessary accessories like gloves, a scarf and a warm hat is really essential if you want to ensure your visit to Amsterdam in the winter months is a success... or at least doesn't result in frostbite.

Depending on how much you feel the cold, I really wouldn't blame you if you packed a few thermal layers for under your clothes, and maybe also throwing in a pair of woolly socks. Most houses and accommodation in Amsterdam will be plenty warm enough so it's really only when you're out and about you have to think about what to wear to keep warm.

The good thing about Amsterdam is that there isn't really a very swanky dress code in terms of what people wear when they go out. Unlike some places in the UK I can think of, young people going out on a Friday or Saturday evening in winter will always dress appropriately - i.e. jeans, tights, long sleeves - and they'll always wear a coat. You can easily (and comfortably!) wear jeans and trainers to most of Amsterdam's restaurants, bars and nightclubs, unless they are particularly pricey or exclusive.

As I mention briefly above, if you're planning on cycling in Amsterdam during your stay, be sure to have a pair of decent gloves (and ideally a warm hat and scarf too) as the wind chill and cold air will get to your fingers quick. I highly recommend having a pair of suede or leather gloves (or eco-friendly equivalent) rather than just a stretchy cotton or man-made fabric as these will be next to useless in temperatures that hover or dip below freezing.

Should you get unlucky with the rain, it may be worth getting a fold-up rain poncho from the famous Dutch store Hema (they're scattered) across the city, as this will keep you dry (or drier!) in a sudden downpour while out on your bikes. Of course you don't have to cycle! Many Dutchies (but certainly not all as you will see!) ditch their bikes in colder, winter months in Amsterdam and opt for the warm and dry public transport, which is well set up to take you all over the city so don't think you have to get on two wheels.

TIP: If you are planning on navigating the city by public transport during your stay AND you wish to take in a few museums, I highly recommend the Iamsterdam City Card.
