Amsterdam Weather: Christmas and Winter Climate

It is tough to prepare for Amsterdam Christmas weather – it can vary drastically from day to day…and even from hour to hour. Typically, winter temperatures in Amsterdam are quite cold – often dipping below freezing overnight.

That said, sometimes the weather in Amsterdam at Christmas gets so cold that the canals freeze over. When the ice is thick enough, brave locals even go ice skating on Amsterdam Central canals. Precipitation – either snow or rain, depending on the temperature – is common during the winter in Holland, but is rarely heavy.

Our Amsterdam at Christmas weather was generally mild with temperatures in the mid-40Fs. There were days of overcast skies and bouts of rain, but not enough to put a damper on our festive spirit! When you visit Amsterdam in winter, you just need to be prepared for the various elements.

It’s always a good idea to bring a packable raincoat , a travel umbrella – and hats , gloves and scarfs , too!

Visiting Amsterdam during Christmas is truly fabulous! In fact, we think it is one of the Best Places To Spend Christmas in Europe . There are fewer crowds, several special events and heaps of merriment. Our list of the best things to do in Amsterdam at Christmas are certain to get you in the holiday spirit. 

Amsterdam Christmas Lights

While the Light Festival in Amsterdam certainly brightens the short days and dark nights, they aren’t the only lights in the city! Visitors will find twinkling Christmas lights in Amsterdam draped along streets and decorating trees – and simply walking down the illuminated lanes is one of the fun things to do in Amsterdam in winter.

It should be noted that Christmas decorations in Amsterdam tend to be simple and understated, rather than flashy or gaudy. Some of our favorite Amsterdam Christmas decorations were modest wreaths hung on doors and sparsely decorated trees in quaint neighborhood squares.

Christmas Tree Amsterdam

The largest Amsterdam Christmas tree stands in Dam Square in the heart of the city. The Dam Square Christmas Tree reaches the height of 20 meters (65 feet) and is covered in more than 40,000 lights. The tree is usually lit in mid-December in a fun Amsterdam Christmas time celebration.

The tree lighting ceremony includes carol singers and vendors selling classic Christmastime Dutch Food , like poffertjes (mini pancakes) and Oliebollen (donuts).

Strolling through the Amsterdam Holiday Markets is one of the Top Things To Do in Amsterdam at Christmas. After spending Christmas in Europe in several different cities, we assumed Amsterdam, Netherlands holidays would be celebrated the same way.

However, there are a few key differences that visitors need to know about before planning Christmas trips to Amsterdam.

Steaming spiced wine, sweet treats and traditional huts are all part of the scene, but Dutch Christmas Markets are quite different from the neighboring German Christmas fairs. Unlike the sprawling, month-long celebrations in other European cities, the Amsterdam winter markets tend to be smaller and more subdued.

Furthermore, some of the markets only take place on a single day or weekend – meaning, unless you plan to spend the entire month of December in Amsterdam, you will not have the opportunity to go to all of them!

Some markets run through the entire Christmas season, while others take place on a specific weekend. Visitors will find that there are a variety of Christmas Markets in Amsterdam, both traditional and modern, from mid-November until the end of January.

An Amsterdam Christmas vacation would not be complete without visiting at least one of the city’s holiday markets! Just be sure to check dates and times in advance of your trip.

Museumplein Christmas Market and Ice Festival Amsterdam

Two of the city’s best holiday events take place in one square that together create the quintessential Dutch winter market. The Museumplein Amsterdam Christmas Market and Ice*Amsterdam Festival are two overlapping events that shouldn’t be missed.

The atmospheric market – which features traditional holiday chalets, fire pits and cauldrons of mulled wine – is open in the weeks running up to Christmas through the day after Xmas.

The Amsterdam Ice Festival is the ideal place to go ice skating in Amsterdam at Christmas. The rink is backdropped by the striking Rijksmuseum and features a replica Magere Brug (the iconic ‘Skinny Bridge’) and a cozy bistro. The Amsterdam ice skating rink typically opens in mid-November and operates until the beginning of February. 

Westergas: The Funky Xmas Market Amsterdam and Amsterdamsche Kerstmarkt

Westergas is the city’s hip, artistic district that occupies a former gas factory within the spacious Westerpark. Ideal for events, two Christmas fairs take place in the historical and stylish venue.

The Funky Christmas Market Amsterdam is a unique market in that it features handmade wares and artsy events. This market takes place on a Sunday in mid-December (the 17th for 2023).

The Amsterdamsche Kerstmarkt was moved to Westergas in 2019 and is typically held for just a few days before Christmas. The market features food trucks, Dutch Craft Beer , live music, films and art. They also have an ice rink and Christmas karaoke. 

Rembrandtplein Christmas Market

The Winterland Market in Rembrandtplein is one of the only Amsterdam Central Christmas Markets. Complete with an ice-skating rink and numerous Christmas houses doling our classic treats, the Christmas Market at Rembrandtplein is the perfect place to warm up with a cup of mulled wine.

Amsterdam Winter Paradise

The Het Amsterdamse Winterparadijs is a wintertime amusement park! At this Christmas fair in Amsterdam, participants join in the festive activities – like ice racing, curling and snowball throwing. In the Winterplein, visitors can roast marshmallows, ride the Ferris Wheel or slide down the Tube Jump. During the day, the event is family friendly, but at night there are DJs, live musicians and plenty of places to imbibe. Note: This is not a free Amsterdam Christmas Market; tickets are required for entry.

Dam Square Christmas Market

Okay, so technically there is not an organized Christmas Market on Dam Square, but the area does exude an extra Christmassy feeling with the gigantic tree and a few vendors selling Christmas treats.

Pure Winter Market Amsterdam

With a special focus on food and sustainable gifts, the Pure Winter Market offers a different kind of Christmas market. The one-day events are held on Sundays in various Amsterdam parks.

Haarlem Christmas Market

Pro Tip : The Christmas Market Haarlem takes place on one weekend, usually in the beginning of December…so plan accordingly!

Amstelveen Christmas Market

The Christmas Market Amstelveen is a Winter Village that features an ice rink and 60 vendors selling handmade gifts.

Den Ilp Christmas Village Amsterdam

The small village of Den Ilp, just north of Amsterdam, only has a population of 800 residents, but they put on an incredible Christmas light display!

Those who don’t mind traveling a little bit further might want to check out the Floating Christmas Market in Leiden or The Royal Christmas Fair in The Hague. We have also celebrated Christmas in Nijmegen ; which is in the eastern side of the Netherlands near the German border and the fun Kleve Christmas Market.

Christmas Markets Near The Netherlands

Amsterdam is well-connected to Germany by train, plane and bus – which is perfect for making a quick trip across the border for a few German Christmas Markets! Our top picks for a short day jaunt or overnight trip would be to the nearby Dusseldorf Christmas Market (only 2 hours by train) or the Christmas Market in Frankfurt .

It would also be fairly easy to get to Paris and London for their fabulous holiday celebrations. Furthermore, there is an Alsace to Amsterdam Christmas Cruise that allows passengers to cruise in style from Basel , Switzerland on an 8-day river boat tour, visiting some of the best markets in the region – including Strasbourg , Colmar and Amsterdam!

Sinterklaas (December 5/6)

Sinterklaas – or Saint Nick – is one of the best Amsterdam Christmas traditions for kids! In mid-November, Sinterklaas arrives via boat from Spain. He travels around accompanied by his (controversial) Zwarte Piet helpers visiting children in a buildup to Feast Day on December 5. That night, Sinterklaas brings presents to good boys and girls – then the following day (St. Nicolas Day), he sails off until next year.

Pro Tip : Kruidnoten, one of our favorite Dutch Christmas cookies, are only eaten when Sinterklaas is in town…so get them while you can!

Christmas Eve in Amsterdam (December 24)

In Amsterdam, Christmas Eve is not a celebrated public holiday. Grocery stores and bars might even be a bit busier than usual, but there is not a traditional Christmas Eve dinner in Amsterdam or any other holiday customs celebrated on the day.

Amsterdam Christmas Day (December 25)

Xmas Day in Amsterdam is an official holiday, so many things are closed. Expect closures at most grocery stores, shops, markets, restaurants and museums. However, there are exceptions – and still plenty of things to do in Amsterdam on Christmas Day!

What and Where to Eat on Christmas Day in Amsterdam

If you are staying in the city on December 25, you are likely wondering, Are restaurants open in Amsterdam on Christmas Day?

To be honest, there are not many open Amsterdam restaurants on Christmas Day, leaving tourists with few choices for a holiday meal. Those staying in apartments where they have use of a kitchen can prepare festive meals at home, but we have a few tips for travelers staying in hotels, too!

Christmas Lunch Amsterdam

Many locals celebrate the holiday with Christmas Lunch in Amsterdam. Typically the Dutch Christmas Brunch is eaten at home with family and friends. For visitors, there are a few restaurants that are open for Christmas Day lunch in Amsterdam…but not many. Instead, an easy – yet so very Amsterdam – Christmas lunch could be a simple charcuterie platter of local cheeses and meat. This could work in an apartment or hotel room, but if it is nice enough outside, as a picnic along a canal or in a park.

Christmas Dinner Amsterdam

Christmas night is usually highlighted by a feast at home. Traditional Christmas Dinner in the Netherlands consists of a shrimp starter, thick pea soup (called Erwtensoep or Snert), roasted vegetables (like brussel sprouts and potatoes) and a main meat dish (often game meat such as rabbit, venison or duck).

However, a relatively new custom for Christmas Day dinner in Amsterdam is Gourmetten – where diners cook their own meals of bite-sized meats and veggies in small skillets over a tabletop oven. This Amsterdam Christmas tradition requires a special Gourmetten set – but ask if your Airbnb host has an extra one and you can pick up ingredients already prepared at the local grocery store.

If a kitchen and/or Gourmetten set is not available to you, do not fear. There are a handful of Christmas Day restaurants open in Amsterdam where visitors can eat a festive meal. In fact, many restaurants serve a fixed menu of classic Amsterdam Christmas food. Just note that it is essential to make a reservation in advance.

Christmas Mass Amsterdam

Despite the hefty number of churches in Amsterdam, the residents of the city are not particularly religious. Most churches do hold a Christmas Eve or Christmas Day mass, but it won’t likely be heavily attended (or, of course, in English).

Pro Tip : Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder (Church in the Attic) offers Christmas Mass, which we think would be quite atmospheric. Tickets are required and should be booked in advance for your Amsterdam Christmas trip.

What Is Open on Christmas Day in Amsterdam?

Not everything is closed! In fact, top city museums – like the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House – are all open on Christmas Day. Additionally, the Museumplein Christmas Market and Ice Amsterdam skating rink are open, too.

Some canal cruises are also operational. While most coffeeshops and bars are closed, there are a handful of Central and neighborhood establishments that are open for business.

If the weather is nice, Christmas Day is the perfect day to visit some of the city’s parks. The sun was shining when we were in Amsterdam for Christmas, so we headed for Vondelpark, which was full of locals, families and tourists.

Amsterdam Public Transport Christmas Day

Public Transport is operational on Christmas Day, following the Sunday schedule.

Boxing Day Amsterdam – Second Christmas (December 26)

The day after Christmas, Second Christmas, is another holiday celebrated in Amsterdam. Although more restaurants, bars and shops are open than on Christmas Day, many establishments remain closed through the 26th. Additionally, Public Transport operates on a Sunday schedule on Amsterdam Boxing Day.

Amsterdam between Christmas and New Year

Amsterdam after Christmas is a busy time of year. Between school holidays and work vacations, people flood into the city beginning the day after Christmas, so expect it to be a bit more crowded.

Amsterdam Holidays: New Year’s Eve and Day (Dec 31 and Jan 1)

New Year’s Eve in Amsterdam is celebrated with fireworks (A LOT of fireworks) and parties (both elegant affairs and all-night raves). Champagne is the holiday drink of choice and, in the Netherlands, Oliebollen (traditional Dutch donuts) are the NYE tradition.

In Amsterdam on New Year’s Day, many people dive right in with a frigid North Sea swim. The event in nearby Zandvoort aan Zee hosts one of the biggest New Year Day plunges. Do you dare join in?!

Regardless of the season, we think the best place to stay in Amsterdam is in – or close to – the city center. Amsterdam accommodations tend to be on the pricey side year-round, so you will need to consider your budget when searching for a place to stay. 

Also, keep in mind that many restaurants will be closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day in Amsterdam, so it may be helpful to find accommodations with a kitchen (or at least a refrigerator) or a hotel that has an on-site restaurant (just confirm that it will be open for the holidays!).

And yes, I’m well aware that there are articles listing 5 or even 10 best Christmas Markets in Amsterdam… But when you look deeper, you’ll realize that some of them are not even in the city, and others are only open one day or one weekend per year.

The truth is that there is only one Christmas Market in Amsterdam – Christmas Village on Museum Square – that is somewhat comparable to what the traditional Christmas Markets look like in the rest of Europe.

Furthermore, it’s really small and can’t even be compared to e.g. the Brussels Christmas Market or the smaller Bruges Christmas Market , not even talking about the major ones in Germany or northern France… Let’s just say that any of the little towns in Alsace have bigger and more impressive Christmas Markets than Amsterdam…

As mentioned, the Christmas Market in Amsterdam is rather small and the number of market stalls varies by year. Usually, there are not more than 40-50 stands. But the market is very cozy – with nice wooden chalets and Christmas lights.

You will find all kinds of foods and drinks here – from mulled wine to traditional Dutch herring, poffertjes (mini-pancakes), and oliebollen (deep-fried dough balls). There are also places selling seasonal clothing, artisanal handcrafted gifts, etc.

In some years, there is also an ice skating rink on Museum Square. Unfortunately, it’s not the case in winter 2023.

Amsterdam Winter Paradise

• Location: Europaplein, next to RAI Amsterdam Convention Centre.
• Open: Daily from 14 to December 30, 2023, between 9 AM and 11 PM (midnight on weekends) .
• Entrance: Tickets with entry time slots .

Amsterdam Winter Paradise (Het Amsterdamse Winterparadijs) is by far the best place to be if you are looking for all kinds of winter-themed activities in Amsterdam. This is not a traditional Christmas Market, but rather a winter fair .

Here, you will find several ice skating rinks (one indoors and one outside), a Ferris Wheel, sliding slopes, all kinds of light installations, carousels, swing rides, and similar. There are also several bars and eateries and you can even roast marshmallows by the fire. They also organize all kinds of events, both for kids as well as adults.

Good to know: You will need a ticket to enter the grounds and all the regular activities are included (except the ones where you play to win prizes). Entry tickets are timed and prices are higher in the evenings ( book in advance !!!), but once you are inside, you can stay as long as you want to.

TIP: Visit earlier in the day and avoid weekends. It’s not just cheaper, but you will also be able to enjoy more activities without the crowds. Evenings can get very busy and you’ll have to queue at most attractions. The good thing is that the queues tend to move fast.

Location and getting there: Amsterdam Winter Paradise is located right next to RAI Amsterdam Convention Centre, about 2km south of Museum Square. While you can walk here from the city center in about 30-60 minutes, you can easily get here by metro. It’s just 4 stops/8 minutes ride from the Central Station.

The popular Upside Down Museum is located just nearby. So you can easily combine a visit to Winter Paradise and Upside Down – both are fun for the whole family.

Ice Skating Rink on Rembrandt Square

• Location: Rembrandtplein.
• Open: Daily between 17 November 2023 and 6 January 2024.
• Entrance: Free to watch, a few euros to skate.

On Rembrandt Square in the historic city center, you can find a small ice skating rink . There are also a couple of street food stalls selling mulled wine, hot chocolate, grilled sausages, and similar.

It’s not really what you could call a ‘Christmas Market’ but if you are looking for a cozy festive atmosphere and winter activities in Amsterdam, this is one of the few places worth checking out. In the winter of 2023, it’s also the only ice skating rink in the center of Amsterdam.

Good to know: You can rent skates or bring your own. A day ticket costs just a few euros and you can skate as long as you want to. Also here, debit cards and mobile payments are accepted, but credit cards are pretty much useless…

Amsterdam Christmas Trees

If you are wondering where to find the Amsterdam Christmas Tree , you may want to know that this varies year by year. There is also not one ‘main’ Christmas Tree, but several of them, in different locations, and they are usually rather simply decorated.

Usually, there is a big Christmas Tree on the Dam Square , in front of the Royal Palace. However, it’s not always the case. On my recent winter visit to Amsterdam, there were no decorations here at all, just a big group of pigeons…

There is usually a Christmas Tree on Museum Square , behind Rijksmuseum where the main Christmas Market is. This is often one of the bigger trees you’ll find in the center.

You might also find a Christmas Tree on Beursplein (Stock Exchange Square) or some other location on the main avenue, Damrak.

In other words, just walk around, explore the city, and you will likely stumble upon several Christmas Trees here and there.

• Location: all over the city center.
• Open: Daily from 30 November 2023 until 21 January 2024. Nicest in the dark.
• Entrance: FREE, unless you buy an app with the walking route or take a canal cruise .

Amsterdam Light Festival takes place every winter and is one of the best-known holiday season events in the city. The theme varies every year, but the concept is always the same – there are all kinds of lit artworks set in various public locations all over Amsterdam’s city center.

Because the light installations and their locations change every winter, it’s impossible to say in advance where you can find them. While you will probably run into a couple of them while walking around the city center, the only way to see them all is to download their app with the walking route. The entire route is usually around 7-8 km (4-5 miles), but you can also just do part of it.

TIP: The easier way to enjoy the Amsterdam Light Festival is by taking an evening canal cruise . If the weather permits, opt for an open-boat cruise . Since it rains a lot and you never know how the weather will turn out to be, most companies play it safe and use (semi) covered boats. This is one of the most popular Light Festival cruises departing near the Central Station.

If you want to do a lights cruise and visit the Amsterdam Winter Paradise, this 2-in-1 combi ticket will save you some money (and make it easy to book everything in one go).

Good to know: While the artworks of the Amsterdam Light are nice to see, they are just a few and scattered all over the city. Luckily, there are also regular Christmas lights to enjoy all over Amsterdam.

Most shopping streets and popular dining areas have really pretty light displays, so if you are looking for a fairytale-like Christmas atmosphere, you don’t have to worry – Amsterdam is really cozy at Christmas, especially after dark.

What is Open at Christmas Itself (24-25-26 December)?

Visiting Amsterdam during the holiday season, you might be wondering what to expect on Christmas Day itself and the days before and after that.

• December 24 – Christmas Eve – is a regular working day, but some places might close a few hours earlier than usual.
• December 25 – Christmas Day is an official public holiday in the Netherlands. Most businesses and shops are closed but the majority of tourist attractions in Amsterdam are open.
• December 26 – Boxing Day – is also an official bank holiday in the Netherlands. However, most shops and pretty much all tourist attractions are open on this day.

Most shops are closed on the 25th only. Some museums/tourist attractions are closed on December 25 but are open on December 26, some others remain open daily but have shorter opening hours, and some are open as usual. Most restaurants are open at Christmas, but if you are looking for a nice restaurant for dinner on the 24th or 25th, we highly recommend reserving a table in advance.

Below, you can find a list of some of the best tourist attractions in Amsterdam that are open at Christmas, including Christmas Day itself.

Here are some of the top places to visit in Amsterdam that are open at Christmas 2023 :

• Amsterdam Christmas Market (free entry).
• Amsterdam Winter Paradise ( book ahead !!!).
• Van Gogh Museum (you have to book tickets weeks ahead!!!).
• Rijksmuseum ( book ahead ).
• Heineken Experience ( book a time slot in advance ).
• Madame Tussauds ( more info and tickets ).
• Moco Museum ( more info and tickets ).
• Icebar Amsterdam ( more info and tickets ).
• The Upside Down Museum ( more info and tickets ).
• Rembrandt House Museum (daily, except 25/12 – more info and tickets ).
• Royal Palace (daily, except 25/12 – more info and tickets ).

PRO TIP: Book your tickets in advance, especially if you are traveling between Christmas and New Year! That way, you will immediately see what’s open, and at what time, and avoid disappointment. Tickets to the most popular attractions tend to sell out, in some cases even several weeks in advance.

Christmas school holiday is the peak season, so booking ahead is the only way to be sure that you can visit the places that you want to visit (and choose the time that best suits you).

Where to Stay

Staying at a beautifully decorated accommodation can make your Christmas visit to Amsterdam so much more festive. However, while most Amsterdam hotels have some kind of Christmas decorations, in most cases, it’s not much more than a few light guirlands and a Christmas Tree…

We haven’t visited all the hotels in Amsterdam, of course, but from the ones we did, Hotel Estheréa has by far the nicest decorations for Christmas. It’s already a very nice and cozy hotel but they really go out of their way to make it even more festive for the holidays.

Furthermore, their canalside location is very central, meaning that you can easily walk to all the main landmarks in 5-20 minutes. Dam Square and Royal Palace are just 5 minutes walk, the ice skating rink at Rembrandt Square – 15 minutes walk, and the main museums and the Christmas Market are about 20 minutes walk.

On a higher budget, Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky is also a wonderful option right on Dam Square. This hotel also has really nice Christmas decorations. The location couldn’t be more central and is perfect for shopping and some of the most popular tourist attractions such as the Royal Palace , Madame Tussauds , Ripley’s Believe It or Not! , and  Amsterdam Dungeon .

Is It Worth Visiting Amsterdam at Christmas?

As you can see, the Amsterdam Christmas Market is not exactly what you may have expected, especially if you have seen pictures or read about some of the nicest Christmas Markets in Europe .

So if Christmas Markets are what you are after, honestly, skip the Amsterdam. Instead, check out the Christmas Markets in Belgium , Germany, and Alsace in France.

However, there are so many other reasons to visit Amsterdam during the holiday season!

First, the main tourist sights are quieter and accommodation prices are much lower than in the warmer months. Furthermore, the city is really cozy with beautiful light displays and festive decorations, and everything is open (including Christmas Day itself!).

In addition, you can visit a traditional Christmas Market (even if small), go ice skating, and enjoy a festive atmosphere. So yes, it’s well worth visiting Amsterdam during the Christmas season .

That being said, if you can, avoid visiting right after Christmas and before New Year. This is the busiest time with big crowds everywhere, especially in the evenings on weekends and public holidays.

So, this is our guide to visiting Amsterdam during the Christmas season. I hope that it gives you a better idea of what to expect and what the holiday season is truly like in the Netherlands.

’10 things you should do during the Christmas season in Amsterdam’ blog post was first published on Culture Tourist in December 2019 and updated on November 23rd 2021.

With the fairytale gabled houses, canals and a lovely Christmas tradition, Amsterdam is definitely one of my favourite towns to be at during the holiday season. There are so many places to see and events to go to during that time of the year. Here is my short guide with 10 things you should do during the Christmas season in Amsterdam.

Christmas season in Amsterdam

Amsterdam somehow becomes even more beautiful during the Christmas season. It looks even older, almost like you’ve stepped into some past time. Snow and Christmas lights create a perfect setting for that festive time in Amsterdam .

#1 – Visit the Amsterdam Light Festival

Light Festival is the annual event in Amsterdam held from mid-November to mid-January. Artists from all around the world are creating light installations, especially for this event. Selected art pieces are exhibited during the two months and could be seen along the canals. The best way to see them is on one of the special Amsterdam Light Festival canal cruise boats or by taking a walk alongside the canals.

⤷ 2021 Update : After being cancelled last year, the Festival is taking place between December 2nd 2021 and January 23rd 2022. It’s absolutely one of the best things to do in Amsterdam during the Christmas season.

#2 – Join the Sinterklaas celebration

The holiday season in Amsterdam starts with the arrival of Sinterklaas (Saint Nicholas) on the second or third Sunday in November. Each year a huge celebration is organised in Amsterdam. And you can be sure you’ll leave it with your pockets filled with pepernoten (small traditional Dutch cookies).

Although lately the whole celebration is a bit controversial with all the Zwarte Piet discussions, it’s still one of the most favourite holidays and Amsterdam festive celebrations of Dutch children.

#3 – Try some oliebollen

If snowdrops are the first signs of the spring, then trucks with oliebollen are the early signs of the Christmas season in Amsterdam. Oliebollen are similar to doughnuts, only they are made in the shape of a boll. They’re often flavoured with apple filling or simply served with a bunch of icing sugar. Tastes like heaven, but be careful because they’re pretty caloric.

However, be sure to try them at least once during the Christmas season in Amsterdam.

#4 – Go ice skating

In December, Amsterdam is becoming the home of a few ice skating rinks. The most beautiful one is on the Museumplein , and it’s open to visitors already at the end of November. However, the largest one is Jaap Eden, with an outdoor 400-metre rink. It’s a bit outside the city centre but definitely worth visiting if enjoy some ice skating.

#5 – Check out some of the most beautiful Christmas lights

Each year Amsterdam is becoming more and more illuminated during the holiday season. Some of the most beautiful Christmas lights could be found at Damrak, Dam Square and Museumplein.

‘Turn on the lights’ event on De Bijenkorf department store on a Dam Square symbolically marks the beginning of a holiday season in Amsterdam. Although it still cannot compete with the decoration of department stores in London , it’s definitely worth seeing. So be sure to walk next to De Bijenkorf one evening and enjoy the Christmas decoration there, too.

#6 – Visit ICE Amsterdam

ICE Amsterdam is a unique program organised at the Museumplein during December. I’ve already mentioned an ice skating rink, but there is also a nice restaurant there where you can get a glass of hot chocolate or a nice mulled wine. ⤷ 2021 Update : After being cancelled last year, ICE Amsterdam is happening in 2021. It’s already up and running. However keep an eye on their website for some possible changes in future.

#7 – Go to the Christmas edition of Museum Market

On Sunday, December 12th, a special edition of Museum Market will be organised at the Museumplein. Designers and artists from all over the Netherlands are displaying and selling their work there. It’s a great place to buy some of the Christmas decorations or presents made by these designers.

#8 – Visit some of the smaller Christmas Markets

There are numerous smaller Christmas markets organised around the city during December. Some events mainly focus on delicious homemade or organic food, different destinations (like Finish or French Christmas market), or arts and crafts. #9 – Visit Rijksmuseum around the Christmas Day

Museums are especially festive during the holiday season. With beautiful Christmas trees and decorations, Rijksmuseum is one of my favourite places to go. If you’re in Amsterdam during Christmas time, be sure to dress up and pay a visit to the Rijksmuseum on December 24th or 26th. It will really put you in that lovely holiday mood. #10 – Buy Christmas cards inspired by Amsterdam

I’m always so sad that the holiday season lasts for only one month. Well, you can always prolong that festive feeling and a special winter appearance of Amsterdam with some of the Christmas cards inspired by it. Take A Tour In The City

It is known worldwide that Dutch people love cycling ( fiets in Dutch), so why not experience the city like the locals? Amsterdam during this time of year is absolutely stunning. Christmas trees, decorations and colorful lights combined with the beautiful canals turn the city into a fairytale. Beginning from the heart of Amsterdam, Centraal Station and Dam Square, you can follow the bike paths that will give you access to every corner of the city. In case you are not fond of cycling, the bike-taxis can offer you an amazing and relaxed tour.

Visit the Amsterdam Light Festival

The Amsterdam Light Festival is an annual event during winter holidays. Dutch and international artists transform the city every year into a light spectacle. It is worth mentioning that each year new techniques are introduced, rendering the festival among the must-see spectacles of Amsterdam during Christmas. The light artwork exhibitions attract everyone’s attention since they offer a contemporary touch to the traditional scenery of the Dutch capital. The Light Festival starts at the end of November and runs until mid-January every year.

Dutch Delicacies

The holidays cannot be experienced without some tasty food. Since Amsterdam is full of Christmas Markets, you should definitely taste the Dutch hapjes (snacks), such as the olieballen and appelbeignets . They are both traditional Dutch sweets deep fried in hot oil. Olieballen and appelbeignets are part of the Christmas menu for the local people and easily found at this time of the year in the Xmas stands spread across Amsterdam.

Ice Skating

For those who love winter sports, Amsterdam might not offer the mountain sides for skiing, but it will not disappoint you. Two beautiful ice-skating rinks are set up every Christmas season in two beautiful spots of the city — Leidseplein and Museumplein . Two lovely and frequented places, the first is surrounded by Christmas stands and the second one by famous Dutch museums, such as the Rijksmuseum and Stedelijk museum. You can ice skate surrounded by a lovely Christmas atmosphere and visit the well known Dutch museums, which happen to be open even during the holidays. Canal Cruise

Apart from the bikes, the Dutch love boats, too. Boat cruises in the canals of Amsterdam are a frequent Dutch habit. If you are not into exercise (walking or cycling), then a boat cruise through the city’s canals will be a lovely experience. You can see Amsterdam from another point of view. It would be a nice idea to enjoy the Light Festival from this angle, as many cruise companies offer the opportunity to enjoy the light artworks. Moreover, you can enjoy a warm coffee or a traditional Dutch beer while cruising.

The World’s Biggest Swan Lake Ballet

For those who love classic ballet, here is an exceptional proposal, especially for the holidays. RAI Theater in Amsterdam will host the biggest Swan Lake Ballet between December 23rd and 27th. The innovation of this spectacle is that instead of 16 swans, the performance expands to 48 swans, which automatically renders the spectacle unique, taking into account that there has never been a similar performance of such size. The National Ballet of Shanghai will perform for you under the instructions of the producer Derek Deane. Amsterdam offers a variety of performances during the winter season that will surprise you.

Amsterdam is full of Christmas markets during this time of the year. Markets are not only spread across the city but also in nearby places like Haarlem and Leiden. The whole scenery cannot help but make you feel the holiday spirit as you enjoy the nice food and buy gifts for your loved ones. Christmas in Amsterdam is my favourite time of the year! And it seems to get better and more festive every year. Early December, all the festive lights are back in the shopping streets. The huge Christmas tree on Dam square is usually put up right after the Dutch celebration of ‘Sinterklaas’ (let’s say around December 8). Watching Christmas movies at home is nice (did you see this list with 31 new Xmas movies on Netflix yet?), but watching a Christmas movie on the big screen is even nicer. Especially if it is also at a special location in Amsterdam. There are several Christmas movie night pop-ups this winter. I list them for you below:

Visit FABRIQUE DES LUMIÈRES DESTINATION COSMOS

Have you ever been to Fabrique des Lumières on the Westergas? Whether you are going for the first time or have already seen several of the immersive experiences… You don’t want to miss Destination Cosmos: The Immersive Space Experience and it can be seen until January 7 . This spectacular exhibition takes you to outer space. In about 40 minutes you will be launched from the bottom of the earth for a journey past planets, nebulae, gas clouds and supernovae and you will experience for yourself how enormous the universe is. Christmas market at the Museum square 

The ice skating rink at the Museumplein may not be happening this year, but the Ice Village Amsterdam Christmas Market is open. Full of winter chalets with artisan food and handmade (lifestyle) products. What I also like is that this market is also open on December 25 and 26. So perfect for a quick stroll before Christmas dinner, with your date or lover or the whole family if you don’t want to sit inside all day. This will be one of the nicest traditional Christmas markets in Amsterdam in 2023, which is also fun to visit with the kids!

Amsterdam Light Festival 2023/2024

For the 12th time, the Amsterdam Light Festival 2023 gives our city a magical glow this winter. Until January 21, 2024 you will find many light artworks in and around the center of Amsterdam! During the 12th edition of the Amsterdam Light Festival, the light artworks take you into the world of AI and its application to art. This year, the overarching theme of the Amsterdam Light Festival is ‘LOADING… Revealing Art, AI and Tech’ . This year the Festival Hub in the Hoftuin is extra fun, where a catering point will also be open between 4:00 PM and 9:00 PM. From Thursday to Sunday you can also reserve a special Amsterdam Light Festival 3-course dinner at Dignita before you go for a walk.

Because the boat trips and canal cruises around the festival are also back, there are Amsterdam Light Festival Boat Tours with different departure locations, types of boats and packages can be booked. You can book both a semi-open and a fully closed boat. I think the best time is always around 6:30 or 7 p.m. when it is really nice and dark. You can then go straight to a nice restaurant or a cozy pub!

This year this Christmas market, which is actually much more of a mega-large Christmas festival than a normal Christmas market, will be even bigger. With lots of live music, various bars, entertainment for the kids and more.

Sniff up some culture (with the kids)

Perhaps your good intention this year was to do something more often in terms of art and culture in the city. In any case, I can recommend everyone to buy a Museum Card for 2024 . Because it remains incredibly inspiring to occasionally visit the beautiful museums in Amsterdam. In addition, many cool art experiences have been added in recent years, like Fabrique des Lumières which I already tipped earlier. Below are a number of tips that I regularly visit:

• STRAAT , the street art museum in Amsterdam-Noord.
• MOCO , for Banksy and more modern art.
• Rijksmuseum , there are plenty of fun things for kids to do during the Christmas holidays.
• H’ART Museum , have you been to the ‘Hermitage’ yet after the name change? During the Christmas holidays they have extensive programming. For example, there is now an exhibition about Amsterdam Tokos.
• Allard Pierson , do you have kids who are already in that ‘Egypt phase’ like my own son? At this museum in Amsterdam they have a room full of mummies!
• Huis Willet-Holthuysen , during the Christmas holidays the kids can go out in the museum with their dog Sammie. Also nice: entrance for the kids is free. More info >>

The Amsterdam Light Festival is an annual light-art festival that transforms the city centre into a glowing masterpiece!

Running from November 30 until January 21, it’s an inspiring way to take in the sights of the city. We all know how scenic the canals of Amsterdam are, so why not see them in a different light this Christmas? 

The light art installations are illuminated daily from 5 PM until 11 PM, so it makes for a perfect evening walk around Christmas with some warm cocoa in your belly. If you’re not much of a walker, you can also enjoy the festival by boat! 🚤

• RAI Amsterdam: At Amsterdam’s huge convention centre, you’ll find a winter paradise; with live music, a skating rink, and even a festive Ferris wheel, you’ll be able to spend a whole day there while you shop the stalls. 
• Ice*Village Amsterdam: Located on the famous Museumplein, the Ice*Village can be found right beside the rink, where you can shop the stalls and get some warm mulled wine to keep your hands warm. 

Not a huge fan of ice skating? Instead of putting your poor limbs through the cold, you can catch a showing of Holiday on Ice . ⛸

At this wonderful Christmas-time event at RAI Amsterdam, you can see the performance of their new show, ‘A New Day’.

If you’re in Amsterdam during the winter season, there is one thing you absolutely must do: Eat some good Dutch food! 

Come on, one of the best things to do in Amsterdam during Christmas is stuffing your face full of delicious and warm oliebollen .

A doughy delicacy sure to leave you full and your fingers covered in a healthy amount of grease and often powdered sugar, you can grab a serving of oliebollen from street stalls. 

Is this Dutch dish not enough for you? Then, treat yourself to some pepernoten before the season is up, or serve up a gourmetten dinner while you enjoy your stay in Amsterdam! 

You will be able to find oliebollen from street stalls and restaurants in Amsterdam, while you can buy a bag of pepernoten from most grocery stores. As for gourmetten… perhaps you’ll need to make some Dutch friends ASAP. 

Hold on, did you think we weren’t going to mention shopping in Amsterdam? 

During Christmas, the streets are covered in gezellige lights, and the atmosphere is just jumping with excited tourists and Dutchies roaming the streets.

With Christmas-themed decorations filling shop fronts and a weekly koopavond every Thursday, where shops open that extra bit later until 9 PM, shopping the streets will fill you with festive glee. 🎄

Make your way through Kalverstraat, PC Hooftstraat, and even migrate through to Rokin. Along the way, you’ll see many of your favourite major stores and a few special to Amsterdam. Need a snack? Visit Van Wonderen , where you can get some freshly made stroopwafels .

One thing the Netherlands has surely got down to a T — New Year’s Eve fireworks ! 

Any international or visitor to the land of cheese and clogs will be blown away by the fireworks that take place on the holiday. 

Normally everyone is allowed to set off fireworks, but it’s incredibly chaotic, so Amsterdam is putting a stop to it this year with a municipal ban on the lighting of fireworks by regular citizens. Instead, head on over to Museumplein for the ‘Amsterdam counts down to 2023’ fireworks and light show! 🎇

Spending the festive season here in the Netherlands means there are so many things to do during Christmas in Amsterdam. 🎄

Guide to Christmas in Amsterdam: Festivals, Lights, and Things to Do

The Netherlands is a country with rich and longstanding Christmas traditions . The Dutch figure of Sinterklaas served as a model for the American version of Santa Claus, and the name "Santa Claus" even comes the Dutch word. December is full of holiday celebrations, but the most important day is St. Nicholas' Eve on December 5, when Sinterklaas visits homes and delivers presents to children around the country.

As the capital and largest city, Amsterdam hosts a variety of holiday-themed events for visitors of all ages and predilections, from traditional tree lightings to a holiday circus.

Visit the Amsterdam Christmas Tree

Dam Square , the historic and cultural center of Amsterdam, adorns a 65-foot tree in December with nearly two and a half miles of LED string lights. With the Royal Palace and 15th-century Nieuwe Kerk church as backdrops, visitors flock to the square all season long to get a look at this majestic view. During the tree lighting ceremony on December 6, 2019, the plaza is filled with carolers, musical performances, and plenty of warm food and drink to celebrate the beginning of the holidays. As the city center of the country's capital, it's the most important Christmas tree in the Netherlands. If you miss the initial ceremony, you can visit the tree every evening from December 6 until early January.

Navigate the Canal Lights

Even though the winter months at this high latitude mean long nights, Amsterdam brightens them up with the Amsterdam Light Festival, running from November 28, 2019, until January 19, 2020. Local and international artists project elaborate light shows onto the buildings and bridges surrounding Amsterdam's iconic canals, turning this already-charming city into even more of a fairytale. The best part is that spectators can enjoy the light shows either from the quays or the water. For an unforgettable experience, reserve a dinner cruise and dine while you pass under these illuminated spectacles.

Play Around at Winter Paradise

The huge RAI Amsterdam center transforms at the end of each year into a winter wonderland known as Winterparadijs, packed with fun holiday activities for the entire family. Start with the carnival rides, like the Ferris wheel or 130-foot chair swing for views of the city. Later, rent some ice skates to glide around the massive ice rink, try your hand at curling, or experience snow travel as they did in yesteryear on a pair of cross-country skies. For the après-ski, head straight to the bar which serves cold-weather favorites like schnapps and mulled wine. After warming up with a beverage, sing your heart out at karaoke or dance away in the silent disco.

Winter Paradise is open daily from December 21, 2019, until January 5, 2020.

Shop at Christmas Markets

Christmas markets are a holiday staple of Northern Europe, and the Netherlands is no exception. Once December arrives, Christmas markets begin to pop up all around the country, and Amsterdam boasts more than a few.

Sunday Market is one of the most popular, located in the reformed historic gas building, Westergas. In December, this monthly event becomes the "Funky Xmas Market." As the name implies, shop for all types of quirky and fun gifts, many of which are designed and made by local crafters and artists. The Funky Xmas Market takes place on December 15, 2019.

Located in the same building just a week later is De Amsterdamsche Kerstmarkt , or the Amsterdam Christmas Market. Although it doesn't provide the same artsy and eccentric vibe as the Funky Xmas Market, the Amsterdam Christmas Market is larger and guests can ice skate, eat at food trucks, and enjoy live music all while shopping in the numerous stalls. Check it out in the Westergas from December 20–23, 2019.

For true fans of European Christmas markets, you must stop in Haarlem, a city about 30 minutes outside of Amsterdam. It's billed as one of the largest holiday markets not only in the Netherlands but neighboring Belgium and Luxembourg as well. Get lost in the labyrinth of over 300 stalls that overrun the city center, each one selling some type of traditional Dutch trinket. Carolers parade the streets to spread Christmas cheer and Dutch pea soup is available to warm you up from the inside. Visit the Haarlem market on December 7–8, 2019.

Experience the Absurdity of WinterParade

WinterParade is hard to classify. In some ways it's theater, in other ways it's a sit-down meal, and then it's also "that warm feeling of togetherness," according to the creators. Whatever you want to call it, this one-of-a-kind event will appeal to anyone who appreciates the ludicrous and silly. Enter and sit down with other spectators at one massive table that stretches nearly 400 feet, while servers climb the tabletop to serve drinks. In between each part of your three-course meal, expect to interact with dancers, actors, acrobats, musicians, and more. The allure of WinterParade is difficult to capture in words, so you'll just have to experience this crazy festival for yourself.

WinterParade has been canceled for 2019 but has plans to return in December 2020.

See a Show at the Dutch National Ballet

"The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" premiered in 2019 and quickly turned into one of the most successful Dutch theater productions of all time, already promised a return for the winter season of 2020. This adaptation of the famous ballet changes the setting from Christmas Eve in Germany to a night during the Dutch feast of Sinterklaas in early 19th century Amsterdam. "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" is playing from December 14, 2019, until January 1, 2020.

If you are curious about the behind-the-scenes workings of the National Ballet, sign up for a guided tour. See for yourself how stage sets, costumes, and props are all designed and crafted in the theater. Tour groups take place on Saturdays, and you must contact the box office for tickets.

Catch a Holiday Concert

The Concertgebouw is one of Amsterdam's most architecturally impressive buildings, delighting residents and visitors with renowned musical shows since 1888. Each winter, the concert hall hosts a variety of holiday-themed performances, such as the annual "Festive Concert" by the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra featuring holiday music from around the world. This year's show, on December 14–15, 2019, highlights music from Hungary and the U.S.

A special concert of "The Nutcracker" is specially adapted for families and recommended for everyone 6 years of age and older. Although the narration for this show is only in Dutch, English speakers can still sit and enjoy the music from this traditional holiday piece on December 15, 2019.

Take a Trip to the Circus

When the circus is in town in Amsterdam, it's an event not to be missed. The Wereldkerstcircus , or World Christmas Circus, is celebrating its 35th year and bringing together some of the world's most impressive acts for an unforgettable show. You'll be mesmerized by the awe-inspiring performances including acrobatics, live music, and stallion dressage. The Wereldkerstcircus isn't just your everyday big top circus, but rather a dynamic and interactive art show that unfolds before your eyes. BUT (and this is a big but), Amsterdam is a truly incredible city, with a lot to offer visitors besides Christmas markets, from world class museums and important historic sights to an abundance of cozy bars and ‘coffee shops’.

There’s no city in the world quite like Amsterdam, and winter is a great time to experience it.

Amsterdam Winter Paradise (Het Amsterdamse Winterparadijs) at the RAI

While not a traditional Christmas market, one winter event you can’t miss in Amsterdam is the Amsterdam Winter Paradise, a fun fair-type event similar to Hyde Park Winter Wonderland in London.

Here, you’ll find plenty of fun outdoor activities like tubing, ice skating rinks, a helter-skelter, fires to cook marshmallows and even a giant Ferris wheel with incredible city views. Then, if you head inside the RAI convention center there is another ice skating rink, many food and drink stalls with seating in front of the main stage, an indoor snow tube ride, snow-play area for kids, fun-fair games and even a cozy Christmas cinema that shows classics like Home Alone!

This is an excellent event to take kids to during the day, but in the evening it becomes more of an adult playground as there are bars, live music and even a silent disco.

Ice*Village Amsterdam at Museumplein

Another signature Amsterdam Christmas market event is the Ice*Village ion the city’s iconic Museumplein, which becomes an enchanting Christmas village throughout the festive season.

Here you’ll find a central ice rink in front of the famous Rijksmuseum, along with a variety of market stalls selling tasty treats and gifts, as well as a live entertainment programme and other fun events and activities. This is one Amsterdam Xmas event you cannot miss!

The Sustainable Christmas Market at De Ceuvel

For those who want to be environmentally conscious with their Christmas gift-buying, there’s the Sustainable Christmas Market! It’s held at a unique office park with a sustainable cafe on-site in the hip Noord neighbourhood.

This is quite a small market, but everything on offer is sustainable, with some lovely local artisans along with live music, yummy food and drink and even a small waterside sauna if you fancy some extra relaxation! The whole event has a very local vibe, plus the park with it’s on-land boats that house creative spaces are definitely worth exploring while you’re there.

Pure Wintermarkt

Pure Markt is a monthly ‘green’ market which takes place in different parks around Amsterdam throughout the year (on the last Sunday of each month). There’s a special Christmas ‘Wintermarkt’ edition held each December that’s always at Park Frankendael – and not on the last Sunday of the month because then it would be too late for Christmas!

This market is where to get gifts for the foodie in your life, as 70% of the stalls focus on gourmet food items, although there are also plenty of lovely non-food gift ideas to shop for as well. This is also a great market to visit for lunch as there are so many delicious things to eat while there, from Japanese street food to Greek gyros in pita.

Funky Xmas Market at Westergas

Lastly, if it’s shopping opportunities you’re looking for, make sure to visit Amsterdam’s Funky Xmas Market, which is a festive edition of the Westergas’ monthly Sunday market that showcases art, gifts, and goods made with love by local artisans, designers, and creatives. You can find very unique (and funky) gift ideas here, along with food trucks, live music and even circus performers to entertain the kids!

8 Best Amsterdam Christmas Markets

Dancing fairy lights, the scent of sweet treats, and children laughing as they learn to skate—these are the hallmarks of the winter season in the Netherlands and just a few of the things that make visiting the Amsterdam Christmas markets so much fun. A trip to this famous city at the holidays means you’ll find handmade crafts, funky art, decorations, and tons of local food items all within beautiful surroundings.

Whether you want to stick to the tourist area or are planning to venture a little farther, here’s a look at some of the best Christmas markets the city has to offer.

Museumplein market

In the heart of the city’s tourist area, you’ll find nearly 50 merchants and food vendors selling their wares in a cozy area set up just for the Christmas season. It’s a great place to do a bit of browsing and eating.

The largest Christmas market in Amsterdam, merchants here sell distinctive items you won’t find other places. There is lots of art and photography—especially works showcasing some of the main attractions in Amsterdam —plus handmade jewelry, knitted items, and home furnishings.

The market is also an ideal place to stop for a bite to eat or a warm drink. From mulled wine and hot chocolate to churros, raclette, and other tasty bites, there is a lot to pick from.

The market is scheduled for December 13-26, 2023.

Note: In past years, this was also the location of a popular skating rink, but in October 2023, the city decided to cancel it this year due to permitting issues. Hopefully it will return in 2024.

Amsterdam Winter Paradise

RAI Amsterdam, the city’s exhibition center, turns into a fun-fair event for the holidays. With indoor and outdoor components, Amsterdam Winter Paradise is the biggest event of the season in Holland.

From December 14 through December 30, there are rides, performances, shopping opportunities, and dining beyond anything you might expect at a traditional Christmas market. Outside, the massive Ferris wheel towers over Europaplein, where you can take a lap around the outdoor ice-skating rink, tube across real snow, and roast marshmallows over an open fire. Inside brings even more skating, space for curling competitions with friends, swings, and all the food you can imagine.  

The event often sells out closer to Christmas, so it’s a good idea to buy your tickets in advance.

Rembrandtplein

The Winterland Market in Rembrandtplein is small but mighty. Located in the city center, the square’s main attraction is its bustling ice-skating rink. Any time you visit, it is filled with kids learning to skate, teenagers playing on the ice, and adults out for a bit of fun.

Beyond the ice, there are a handful of chalets selling Christmas gifts and lots of food stands selling Dutch specialties to keep you warm. There is mulled wine and hot chocolate as well as sausages, fried fish, potato pancakes, and other treats. While the dates for the artisans are more limited, the ice skating rink and many of the food vendors are open November 17, 2023 through January 7, 2024.

Christmas at Westergas

The first Sunday of every month, Westergasfabriek hosts a market full of clothes, housewares, accessories, food, and art. This 19 th -century complex of red brick buildings in Amsterdam West was once home to the city’s gasworks company but is now packed with cafes, breweries, cinemas, shops, and more. The Sunday market takes place alongside all the fun places to visit here.

On December 3, the regular market becomes the Sinterklaas (St. Nicholas) Market. Saint Nick himself makes an appearance and takes the time to meet the children who are visiting. In addition, there are vendors selling toys, jewelry, and other gifts.

Funky Xmas Market

In mid-December, the Christmas spirit fills Westergas during the Funky Xmas market. With lots of different stalls and vendors and a complete food court, there is so much to see at this somewhat nontraditional highlight of December in Amsterdam .

Bright colors, lots of lights, and plenty of entertainment combine to make the Funky Xmas market a fun destination for visitors looking for something a little different. There is nothing cookie-cutter here—from distinctive artwork to handmade jewelry and one-of-a-kind candles, artisans at this market showcase their creativity in a way you don’t find everywhere. This is a great spot to find something unique for loved ones who are hard to buy for.

The market’s food is also a bit atypical, going beyond Dutch food and traditional Christmas fare. There are poffertjes and mulled wine, of course, but the international offerings are substantial. If you’re looking for savory British pies, Japanese food, and Indonesian snacks, there is a lot here. We loved the Brazilian empanadas, in particular.

The Funky Xmas market is also packed with entertainment. Expect to see live music and dancing as well as magicians, jugglers, and other performers playing tricks and wowing audiences under a circus tent. The market is scheduled for December 17, 2023.

Food is the specialty at Pure Markt . This welcoming market that rotates locations throughout the city brings produce, artisanal food, and other delicious products to Park Frankendael for its yearly December market just a few days before Christmas.

Set in a seven-acre park that’s part of a 17th-century estate, Park Frankendael provides a lovely background for the most festive market of the year. About 70% of the vendors here focus on food, and their passion for their work is contagious. The participants who come from across Holland are happy to chat about what they grow, bake, and harvest and to make recommendations about what you’ll like most. With more than 100 vendors focusing on Dutch cuisine and international foods, the choice feels almost endless.  

When it comes to shopping, the Pure Markt has a mix of designer, vintage, and gift items. There is also live music plus a cut out of Santa and other pretty backdrops for seasonal photos. This year’s market is December 17, 2023.

Only 15 minutes from Amsterdam by train, Haarlem is a dream and an easy day trip . It has beautiful architecture, cafes, and quiet lanes, and—during the second weekend of December—it has one of the largest Christmas markets in the Netherlands.

The 300 market stalls spill through the city center running from the Frans Hals Museum to Nieuwegracht. Much of the action is concentrated around Grote Markt and St. Bavo’s Church, which has several stages for live entertainment and music.

As you wander through the chalets, take the time to sample the waffles, hot chocolate, and international treats while listening to the Christmas carols and browsing through the gifts and souvenirs. If you need a break from the activity of the market, check out some of the other things to see in Haarlem , including the Corrie ten Boom House or De Jopenkerk, a brewery located in a former church. In 2023, the market takes place December 8-10.

Winter Village Stadshart Amstelveen

Just a few minutes south of Amsterdam, Amstelveen hosts its Winter Village , which centers around the ice-skating rink in the heart of the town.  

While children skate, adults enjoy the pop-up restaurant and bar alongside the ice. Throughout the season, there are concerts and special events like curling competitions and disco skating on the rink that draw visitors from all around.

More than 60 stalls offer handmade gifts and holiday treats, and shops around the market stay open extended hours to make shopping even easier. The market is scheduled from December 2, 2023 to January 7, 2024.

1. Amsterdam Light Festival 

During Christmas in Amsterdam, stunning lights decorate the streets.

But more than just Christmas decorations will transform the city from November 28th, 2024 to January 19th, 2025.

The 12th annual Amsterdam Light Festival brings amazing artwork from both international and Dutch artists to canals, buildings, and squares. 

The best way to enjoy the lights is by taking  tours by bus  or  canal tours .

Some companies also offer Light Festival bike tours !

Since the sun goes down pretty early this time of year, there are also walking tours  you can take while it's dark out to admire the bright installations.

2. Take a Tour of the City & Popular Sites

There are a lot of great ways to tour Amsterdam, and although it might be chilly at this time of year, you might want to consider one of the following options.

One of the best and most affordable options is of course a pay-what-you-want walking tour .

Currently, there are free walking tours covering the main city center, the Red Light District, notable WW2 sites, and other interesting subjects.

If you're adventurous enough to brave the cold weather, you can experience Dutch culture by  taking a bike tour !

If you'd rather stay out of the wind,  hop-on hop-off bus tours  are a great way to explore the city with narration about Amsterdam's sights and history.

Popular spots to see on bus tour routes include  the Red Light District  and Rembrandtplein, which offers ice skating in December !

If you're interested in The Heineken Experience , there are bus or boat combo packages that include Heineken tickets!

The city also has popular  food tours .

Of course, you could take yourself on a tour of Amsterdam's Christmas markets and the Foodhallen for a great sampling of wintry street food.

3. See a Football Match

There are several professional sporting matches to attend in Amsterdam this December.

If you've never seen a European football match, now is a great opportunity.

Kids might enjoy taking a behind-the-scenes tour of the official Ajax arena, a tour free for  I Amsterdam City Pass  holders.

4. Take a Christmas Cruise

There are several Amsterdam cruise companies offering cruises down the canals all year.

But the city certainly takes on a different look and feel during the holiday season, and some cruise companies offer special services for Christmas.

One popular service is a Light Festival Boat Tour which takes you through the canals during the Amsterdam Light Festival.

If you have a large group, you can have up to 15 people on a Private Group Light Festival Boat Tour .

 5. Grab a Holiday Treat

There are several great festive treats you can find in Amsterdam during the holidays. 

One of the most popular options is a Windmill cookie or speculaas , similar to gingersnaps or gingerbread cookies.

You’ll find them in most bakeries in the city.

Here are a few other tasty snacks you might want to try:

6. Go to the Christmas Square at Museumplein

Throughout the year, there is a special open market called Museum Market hosted at the public space Museumplein located in the Museumkwartier neighbourhood.

And they have a special festive version of this event during the holiday season.

In addition to a wide range of unique products and special gifts, they also play Christmas music and there are plenty of stalls offering delicious holiday snacks and drinks.

The Christmas Market Amsterdam will be taking place from December 13th - 26th.

7. Go to a Concert 

Amsterdam in December will host a few different concerts of varying genres. You can find them all here .

8. See Fireworks on New Year's Eve

In Amsterdam, you can find New Year’s celebrations all around.

At around 21:30, people gather at some of the city’s bigger public squares to ring in the New Year.

We recommend Leidseplein, Dam Square, Rembrandtplein, and Nieuwmarkt squares.

Just keep in mind that these spots are popular and will attract crowds earlier in the day.

Don't miss the amazing free fireworks sponsored by the City at Kop van Java (Java Island) along the IJ waters, just East of Central Station.

The festivities start at 23:00 on December 31st.

9. Christmas Tree Lighting in Dam Square 

Each year, a massive Christmas tree is placed on Dam Square.

At 20 meters high, it requires lots of lights, in this case, 40,000 LED lights. That is a four-kilometer string of lights!

The backdrop of the Royal Palace makes for great picture opportunities.

There will be Christmas carolers, lots of holiday foods available at stalls, and holiday jolliness all around!

The date for the lighting is December 8th.

10. Save with a Tourist Attraction Concession Pass

The easiest way to see more attractions in Amsterdam is by purchasing a concession pass. These tourist passes  work by allowing you to bundle admission tickets for heavy concessions.

You could get up to 50% off retail prices on several passes – or get in for free with an all-inclusive pass.

If you're planning on visiting as many paid attractions as you can over multiple days, an all-inclusive pass might be your best option to save the most.

11. World Christmas Circus

Every holiday season, the World Christmas Circus returns to Theater Carre in Amsterdam. 

All of the acts in this circus are top-ranked performers who have been hand-picked by the Golden Clown Awards.

This is a very popular activity, and tickets tend to sell out well in advance, so we recommend planning your trip to the circus ahead of time.

12. Go to Holiday on Ice

From December 8th through January 7th, the festive ice skating show A New Day performed in Amsterdam. 2024-25 schedule is yet to be announced.

This event features 40 international skaters performing a variety of sophisticated moves at an Olympic level.

Tickets can be purchased through Groupon .

If you’re looking for something affordable and family-friendly, you won’t find much better!

13. Enjoy Church Concerts & Performances

If you’re looking for another opportunity to enjoy some classic Christmas Carols, several churches will be either hosting concerts or leading visitors in holiday songs.

In the past, some historic churches, such as Noorderkerk, have welcomed notable artists to perform special Christmas concerts.

Most churches will provide this type of service on Christmas Eve, so even if you don't want to worry about a ticket, there should be several free opportunities to enjoy this activity. 

14. Skate at the Rembrandtplein Ice Rink

Though not free, it is pretty cheap to go ice skating at the rink at Rembrandtplein.

Last year, for just €2.50 you could skate for the whole day on the ice (or €5.00 if you don't have your own skate).

The square is decorated for the holidays with Christmas trees around the skating rink.

There will also be food stalls serving traditional Dutch winter foods and mulled wine.

The rink typically opens in November and stays open into January.

TIP : There will be a free Christmas market right next to the ice rink with live entertainment, trinkets, clothing, and food for purchase.

15. See Raymonda

The well-reviewed ballet Raymonda performed from December 9th through January 1st. 2024-25 schedule is yet to be announced.

What is being called "the ideal new Christmas classic" and the "best production of the year is danced by the Dutch National Ballet.

The Dutch Ballet Orchestra will be providing the music for the performances.

16. Enjoy Some Holiday Shopping

Everyone needs to do a bit of holiday shopping at some point, and there are a lot of great places to find that last-minute gift in Amsterdam. 

If you’re looking for a wide range of items, consider going to De Bijenkorf in Dam Square. 

This department store sells a variety of things that would make perfect gifts. 

You may also want to consider stopping at the Magna Plaza, a shopping center that typically erects a Christmas tree at the center and includes a variety of interesting shops.

17. Go to the Ice Village at the Rijksmuseum

There are always Christmas markets in various locations around Amsterdam each year.

One of the most popular examples is the Ice Village, which opens up in front of the  Rijksmuseum  at Museumplein.

In addition to great holiday treats, this market also includes an ice rink where the family can enjoy some ice skating. Entrance is entirely free!

18. Discover Christmas Light Displays

When it comes to Christmas lights, the Amsterdam Light Festival is arguably the main event, and there will be installations all over the city.

However, in addition to this festival, you’ll also find plenty of interesting lighting displays in the shop windows and storefronts all throughout Amsterdam. 

No matter where you go, see some pretty cool holiday lights!

19. See Holiday Displays in the Red Light District

Just like everywhere else in the city, the  Red Light District  celebrates the holiday season as well. 

Cafes and coffee shops put up Christmas trees, the erotic museum dresses up a mannequin-like Santa Claus, and more.

No matter where you go in this part of town, chances are you’ll see or experience at least a few festive (and potentially erotic) attractions during the winter.

Amsterdam in December: 11 Things to Do + Travel Tips!

Planning a trip to Amsterdam in December means contending with less-than-ideal weather–but also fewer crowds and plenty of festive holiday cheer!

We loved our winter trip to Amsterdam, and would happily recommend a visit to anyone willing to trade tolerating cold, gray, and wet weather for a chance to experience one of the most iconic cities in Europe in one of its least-crowded seasons.

If you’re considering a December trip to Amsterdam, here’s everything you need to know, from what kind of weather to expect to the best things to do in Amsterdam in winter.

Visiting Amsterdam in December means contending with the coldest, darkest weather of the year–and while that definitely has its benefits, you need to come prepared for the weather!

In December, highs in Amsterdam reach an average of 43°F/6°C, and at night, lows plunge to an average of 36°F/2°C.

December is also the most humid and rainy month of the year in Amsterdam, meaning that the cold can cut right to the bone if you’re not dressed warmly enough and that you’ll need to prepare for the possibility of rain.

In Amsterdam, it rains an average of 15 days in December.

Occasionally, it snows in Amsterdam in December, but don’t count on it during your trip!

The sun rises around 8:45 AM and sets by 4:30 PM, so you’ll have very little daylight to work with, and you can expect most of that daylight to be spent covered in clouds.

Don’t expect to see a lot of blue skies or sunshine during a December trip to Amsterdam!

All of that being said, visiting Amsterdam in December definitely comes with enough rewards to be worth the cold and dark–but you’ll need to pack well (more on that below).

When visiting Amsterdam in December (or in January, for that matter), you’ll notice that the city’s famous canals have a bit of extra sparkle!

Each winter, they are decorated with some of the most innovative and stunning light displays that you can imagine.

While the Amsterdam Light Festival installations are striking from any angle, they’re best experienced from the water!

Go ice skating!

Without a doubt, enjoying some ice skating is one of the best things to do in Amsterdam in December.

If you get extremely lucky, you might even get to experience ice skating on the canals–but unfortunately, that’s not common in recent years, as they don’t have a tendency to freeze hard enough these days.

However, the picturesque ice skating rinks around Amsterdam offer a fun alternative!

Take a canal cruise.

Sound like a good way to freeze?

Don’t worry–many of Amsterdam’s canal cruises are heated and covered!

W hile that may be a downside during some parts of the year, you’ll be very glad to have a covered boat to enjoy a canal cruise in Amsterdam in December .

During my most recent trip to Amsterdam, my friends and I opted to enjoy this cozy canal cruise featuring cheese, wine, and a covered boat, and we had a fantastic time!

Pay a visit to the Christmas markets.

While Amsterdam’s Christmas markets aren’t the most overwhelming in Europe (and the fact that we traveled from Germany to Amsterdam on our trip probably didn’t help that impression), they are fun, cheery places.

If you happen to be visiting Amstedam in December and are looking to do a little holiday shopping and indulge in some sugary Dutch treats (stroopwafels, anyone?) , then head right to the Christmas markets.

If you’d like to add even more Christmas market fun to your trip, consider taking a day trip to another town near Amsterdam, too.

L eiden, for example, puts on a unique floating Christmas market each year .

Warm up in Amsterdam’s best museums.

Winter may just be the perfect time to take advantage of exploring Amsterdam’s museums, including the famous Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum .

Not only are the crowds generally lighter in Amsterdam in December than during the summer months, but exploring the museums will also give you the perfect chance to escape the cold weather for a bit!

If you’re looking for a quick but interesting museum to visit, I also loved visiting the Our Lord in the Attic Museum , which features a formerly hidden Catholic Church.

Bundle up and wander the canals.

No visit to Amsterdam is complete without aimlessly wandering through the Old Town to enjoy beautiful canal views, and there’s no reason to let cold weather keep you away!

In fact, there’s something even more special about the canals in December (aside from the Amsterdam Light Festival, it’s probably the fact that there are far, far fewer people around!).

Wear as many layers as you need to, and enjoy some time during your trip wandering through town.

Sample oliebollen.

These Dutch doughnuts are round, deep-fried, sometimes stuffed with raisins, and are absolutely delicious.

They’re a typical cold-weather snack and a must-try Dutch food during your winter trip to Amsterdam!

… and plenty of other warm Dutch dishes.

Oliebollen isn’t the only traditional Dutch winter food you need to be sure to add to your list of what to eat in Amsterdam in December!

Also considering trying snert (split-pea soup), stamppot (potatoes and vegetables), fondue (what better use for all that delicious Dutch cheese?), and Chocomel (Dutch-branded hot chocolate).

Plus, the usual year-round treats like Dutch pancakes, poffertjes, and stroopwafels are also extra-tasty when using them to warm up on a cold day!

In general, Dutch food lends itself to cold winter weather, so enjoy the chance to soak up coziness through cuisine!

Visit a brown cafe. 

Named for their dark, cozy interiors that are typically surrounded by wood-paneled walls, Dutch brown cafes are to Amsterdam what British pubs are to London: casual, comfortable spaces serving unpretentious food, good beer, and good company.

A casual meal in a brown cafe is a must when visiting Amsterdam in winter!

Peruse the cheese shops.

No one does cheese quite like the Dutch, and what better way to warm up in Amsterdam in December than to peruse several, sampling cheese along the way and picking out at least a few to bring home?

The Amsterdam Cheese Museum can be a fun stop, too!

Enjoy all the usual best things to do in Amsterdam… with fewer crowds!

One of the best things about December in Amsterdam is simply that there are few people there!

As a fairly small city that is also one of the most visited cities in Europe , the tourist crowds in Amsterdam can be oppressive much of the year.

But in December, when people more commonly head to Germany for Christmas markets or to the Canary Islands for some sun, Amsterdam has some more breathing room, which makes it even more fun to visit.

Whether you have time for a weekend in Amsterdam or a full week, you’re bound to cover more ground in Amsterdam during a winter trip than a summer one.

There’s no way around it: hotels in the Netherlands, and in Amsterdam in particular, are far from the most affordable places that you’ll find in Europe.

The good news, though, is that while Amsterdam is expensive , December is one of the most affordable months to visit.

Expect to pay more for lodging in Amsterdam than for comparable stays in many other cities in Europe during winter, but much less than you would if you were visiting Amsterdam in, say, April .

If you have mobility limitations, be sure to read the description of your hotel carefully: very steep staircases are far from unheard of in Amsterdam!

Plan your daylight hours well.

With limited daylight to work with, plan wisely when visiting Amsterdam in December.

If you can, try to structure some of your indoor activities for after 4:30 PM –after all, it’s not “night”, but it sure will feel like it if you’re hanging out outside!

Break up your day with a variety of both indoor and outdoor plans.

Amsterdam is not only cold in December, but it also tends to be damp, making the cold weather even more uncomfortable.

Make the most of your trip to the city by mixing up indoor and outdoor activities, balancing your need to stay warm with your desire to make the most of the limited daylight hours.

Don’t expect German-level Christmas markets.

Amsterdam’s Christmas markets are lots of fun and full of tasty treats–but they aren’t the immersive, gigantic fantasylands featuring seemingly endless wood chalet stalls and mug rentals that you’ll find in places like Germany and Austria .

Luckily, Amsterdam is extremely well-connected to Central Europe by train, so if you do want to visit both Amsterdam and the best Christmas markets in the world in December, you can consider combining your trip!

Cologne, Strasbourg , Baden-Baden, Paris , Basel, and even Munich (plus so many more!) can all be reached within a day by train.

Plan ahead if you want to visit the Anne Frank House.

Visiting the Anne Frank House is an incredibly moving experience and one of the best things to do in Amsterdam in December (or any other month, for that matter), but it does require planning ahead.

The limited tickets for the house are released 6 weeks in advance and sell out extremely quickly.

Tickets must be purchased through the official website .

The good news is that by visiting Amsterdam in December, you have much better odds of snagging a ticket than someone planning a trip in, say, April .

Amsterdam doesn’t completely close on Christmas Day.

While in many European cities you’ll find all restaurants, pubs, museums, and other attractions closed on Christmas Day, Amsterdam stays a bit more open, with attractions like the Rijksmuseum remaining open on December 25.

Many places will be closed, of course, but with some museums open and a decent number of restaurants open as well, Amsterdam can be a great place to spend December 25 if you’re planning a trip to Europe over Christmas Day .

Lip Balm  — You know what’s not fun? Eating Dutch food with chapped lips.

Hand Sanitizer   — Christmas markets, in particular, tend to mean lots of finger foods, eaten outside, often not near a bathroom where you can wash your hands.

Bringing along hand sanitizer for your Amsterdam winter trip will make your life much easier.

December, January and February aren’t the most inspirational months, maybe, to visit Amsterdam. But visiting the Dutch capital during the coldest months of the year has its advantages. Most tourist will prefer warmer destinations, so you finally won’t have to share Van Gogh’s and Rembrandt’s masterpieces with tons of others. And it’s really the perfect time of year to experience Holland at its best. Visit the Christmas market in Amsterdam, enjoy some ice skating. taste the best Dutch seasonal food and buy the first (!) tulips over the year.

• If you’re travelling from Germany, Belgium, France or the UK, simple take the train to Amsterdam . You’ll arrive at Amsterdam Central Station, in the heart of the city.

Winter in Amsterdam: 11x top things to do

Christmas market amsterdam.

From the second week of November until the first week of January, Museumplein turns into a very cute Christmas market in Amsterdam, Ice*Amsterdam . The square in front of the  Rijksmuseum  and  Van Gogh Museum is filled with chalets selling drinks and typical Dutch winter food. Rent a pair of ice skates and twirl around in the ice rink taking in the most stunning view of the Dutch capital. 

Funky Xmas Market

The Funky Xmas Market is an anual alternative Christmas market in Amsterdam and the best place to buy colourful, fair trade, hand made and funny Christmas presents. Plus, you’ll be able to buy some amazing food from one of the many stalls. The atmosphere will be local and relaxed. This Christmas market in Amsterdam takes place on the third Sunday in December at Westergas .

Okay, so Amsterdamse Winterterras Festival isn’t a Christmas market. But it’s such a fun and wintery festival that I definiely think it does count as a Christmas market in Amsterdam. From the first weekend of November until the first weekend of December, Thursdays til Sundays, you’ll find Amsterdamse Winterterras Festival at in ‘de Gashouder’. You’ll have to buy tickets in advance and then you’ll be able to sample food from the finest restaurants in Amsterdam for very reasonable prices, enjoy live music and dance until your feet hurt. 

Het Amsterdamse Winterparadijs

Het Amsterdamse Winterparadijs is both an indoor as outdoor Christmas market in Amsterdam, which you can visit the last three weeks of December in Amsterdam RAI. You’ll have to buy tickets in advance. It’s actually a great Christmas market in Amsterdam for the whole family to enjoy. There are numerous rides and attractions, like a big ferris wheel and a retro carrousel. Kids can enjoy crafts or a ride on the Christmas train. But there is also loads to do for their parents, who can enjoy nice food and live music by well-known Dutch artists. 

Christmas market Zaandam

Zaandam is just a short trainride outside of Amsterdam and it’s one of those typical Dutch town that you simply have to visit. And the Christmas market in Zaandam is just the perfect excuse. During Zaanse Dickens Market A Christmas Carrol comes to life during the second and third week of December. Take a ride on the ferris wheel and enjoy some traditional Dutch food at one of the many stalls. You can combine this Christmas market in Amsterdam with a visit to Zaanse Schans .

Amsterdam Light Festival

What I love most about winter in The Netherlands are the many light festivals. GLOW Eindhoven is probably the best light festival to visit. But Amsterdam Light Festival is definitely one of the top things to do in winter in Amsterdam. Every edition of the Amsterdam Light Festival has its own theme and runs for 6 or 7 kilometers along the canals of the city. You can simply walk the art trail, but it’s more fun to book a  Light Festival canal cruise . Amsterdam Light Festival runs from the first week of December until te last week of January.

Fabrique des Lumières

One top thing to do in winter in Amsterdam is to visit Fabrique des Lumières . In this theater at Westergas the greatest artist come to life in a beautiful audiovisual way, you’ll be experiencing their art works like never before. 

Spot street art (indoors)

Spotting street art is one of my favourite things to do when I visit a city and Amsterdam has some amazing street art. But when it’s winter in Amsterdam, you’ll rather not be outside for too long. And visiting street art museum STRAAT will give you the opportunity to see the works of world famous street artists, but indoors. STRAAT is Amsterdam’s street art museum located on quirky, alternative NDSM island and will show you over 50 amazing works by wold famous artists. 

Try some oliebollen

Winter in Amsterdam is not complete without trying the typically Dutch oliebollen. During the winter months, especially in November, December and January, you will find oliebollen stands all over Amsterdam. Oliebollen are a typical Dutch new year’s treat and the Dutch eat them on New Year’s eve. They’re a bit similar to doughtnuts and come plain or filled with raisins. Oliebollen taste best with some powedered sugar on top.

Rijksmuseum

Winter in Amsterdam calls for visiting some of its top museums. Of course, you can’ts kip Rijksmuseum where you will find the absolute best paintings of all the great Dutch masters. Come face to face with the famous paintings by Rembrandt and Vermeer, but let yourself be surprised by some Dutch Golden Age painters you haven’t heard of yet. 

Van Gogh Museum

A huge number of the works of Vincent van Gogh are to be admired at the Van Gogh Museum . Visiting the museum is like stepping into Van Gogh’s turbulent life and seeing his work evolve alongside his mental state of mind. It’s both intriguing and a little heart breaking. I found that taking a guided tour in the Van Gogh Museum made me understand the artist and his works a lot better. 

National Tulip Day

When the Dutch take down the Christmas tree, tulips are brought into the house to give it some colour again. And if you visit Amsterdam in the 3rd weekend of January, you can even get a free bouquet of tulips on Dam Square during National Tulip Day. Everyone is allowed to pick a couple of tulips for a bouquet from a specially designed ‘garden’. A great way to celebrate the tulip. Your post just goes to show that off-season travel can have many benefits. I would thoroughly enjoy ice skating on frozen canals, visiting the less crowded museums, and taking advantage of lower hotel room rates in Amsterdam during the winter months.

The frozen canals are lovely! And the ice skating looks so fun. I had not thought of Amsterdam as a winter Christmas market destination, but it is utterly charming!

I’d love to go ice skating on the canals but it’s so crazy to think that it gets that cold there! I didn’t know there was also a light festival! Will have to consider a future visit during the winter!

I loved this post! You have described ‘winter’ Amsterdam so beautifully! I am also a big fan of the Light festivals (we have one here in Jerusalem). Those deep fried dough balls sound amazing. Oh, and now I understand why the flower market was so disappointing when I visited Amsterdam in August. We were sad to just find bulbs. I had no idea the tulip season was in the winter! y

The first time I visited Amsterdam was late in December and it was so sad looking and grey, but then I started visiting and could really tell the energy of the city! And it was great, as you said, to take advantage of the short queues! We barely waited to get into Anne Frank’s house!

Amsterdam Travel: Amsterdam at Christmas (& New Year)

After I shared my post on Amsterdam in winter , I umm-ed and ahh-ed about penning a post that was all about Christmas in Amsterdam, because surely the existing winter in Amsterdam posyt would cover all the basic information about things you can do in Amsterdam at Christmas and at New Year, but then I realised that actually this is a worthy standalone post to write because visiting Amsterdam over Christmas, or shortly before or after, is actually one of the best times to come over here, and it's quite different from the rest of the season in many ways.

Not only is Amsterdam at Christmas quite quiet - relatively speaking for a busy time of year - but it's absolutely stunning and very Christmassy and festive and romantic and memorable in all the right ways. So here we go, a little round-up of what an Amsterdam Christmas is like, how the locals celebrate, how you should celebrate if you fancy coming here over the festive season (and where you should stay!), and finally some tips for things to do and also a bit of information (and a warning!) about New Year in Amsterdam. Just don't forget your Christmas jumper... actually, you can totally forget that as that trend really hasn't caught on here... yet!

What is an Amsterdam Christmas Really Like?

My instinctive answer to this question is one word: calm. That doesn't mean the streets of Amsterdam are empty at Christmas, nor does it mean that nobody comes to visit, and it absolutely doesn't mean that there is nothing going on (because there is A LOT going on) but I always find Christmas week in Amsterdam a relatively quiet time compared with say London where I feel there is non-stop activity and fuss and SHOPPING, SO MUCH SHOPPING among locals and visitors alike all the way until the shops close on Christmas Eve, at which point the city does go a bit quiet but still nothing close to silent. Christmas in Amsterdam just feels a bit more civilised.

Amsterdam may not fall completely silent over Christmas but I feel it does have this quiet sense of calm about the festivities. Many Amsterdammers leave the city over Christmas, heading to friends or family elsewhere, or others go on holiday, escaping to warmer climes or going on a ski holiday.

This leaves a little extra space for visitors to fill and while accommodation prices certainly aren't low at this time of the year, it is true that availability is good and some will have special offers for you to take advantage of. It's also fair to say that with people going away there should be a good supply of Airbnb apartments to stay in. Before I go on about how romantic and beautiful an Amsterdam Christmas can be, I suppose I should come clean and admit that Amsterdam can of course be very cold at Christmas. It's also a very dark and grey time of year with it being just a few days after the longest day of the year.

While this makes for cosy winter nights where the canals are all lit up and Christmas lights sparkle all over the city, it does mean that your daylight hours are limited and likely to be chilly, so of course, come with plenty of layers, a decent winter (and ideally, waterproof!) coat, warm shoes, and a hat, scarf and gloves.

So, back to being cosy and romantic. Personally, I have always thought Amsterdam suits winter. The leaf-less trees open up the canals allowing you to check out the grandest mansion houses along the canals. If you're lucky the sun can shine and the sky can turn bright blue on some lucky days bringing a lovely clear light to the city for photo opportunities.

Amsterdam is full of wooden-interior bars or cafes with fireplaces to warm up next to. And there are plenty of Christmas-themed things to do, or just generally cosy, wintry activities to do to make your Amsterdam Christmas very special. Oh, and you really can't get a much more winter-friendly, stomach-warming meal than most Dutch foods!

How do the Dutch celebrate Christmas in Amsterdam?

So what's a typical Dutch Christmas like. Well, that's still quite hard for me to answer as I'm a) not Dutch, and b) have yet to go to my first Dutch Christmas (and in any case, I probably shouldn't judge a single one as setting the tone for all), so I honestly don't know what a typical Dutch Christmas looks like but having lived in Amsterdam for five years and spending a few of those Christmases in the city, I can tell you a bit about how Christmas is celebrated by the Dutch.

Firstly, you need to know that gift-giving and specifically Father Christmas (or Santa Claus) is a bit different here. They don't have Santa in the Netherlands, but rather they have Sinterklaas, which yes, means Saint Nicholas so of course Santa Claus and Sint share the same roots, but as far as the Dutch are concerned, they are not one and the same person. Indeed Sint is a much more efficient character who does his gift-giving duties a lot earlier than Santa and Father Christmas, no doubt so he can go on holiday to Thailand or the Caribbean for actual Christmas.

First sightings of Sinterklaas happen in the middle of November when his boat from Spain arrives in the Netherlands (funnily enough in most Dutch cities and towns at roughly the same time, though there is one official arrival spot that is considered THE Sinterklaas' arrival!) and often a small parade takes place to celebrate. From then until 5th December, children leave little treats or offerings - drawings, poems, stories, a piece of fruit - for Sinterklaas in their shoes at night, and often (but definitely not always!) their efforts are rewarded with a small gift. On the final night they are given a more substantial collection of presents, and that is that for Sinterklaas for another year.

A Short Note About Sinterklaas, Piet and Dutch Christmas Traditions

You may or may not be aware that the Sinterklaas festival has become something of a controversy in the Netherlands due to his helpers, who are all called Piet. Traditionally for the last 100 years, Sint's helpers have been called Zwarte Pieten, and this means "Black Pete". When the parades and appearances of Sint and Piet have taken place, it has involved a white person using blackface to depict Zwarte Piet. In the last few decades or so this has very understandably caused controversy and a considerably backlash from many Dutch groups and citizens, and there has subsequently (and rather sadly in my mind) been kickback from those who want to keep the tradition as it was (and still is in many parts of the country).

Personally, as soon as I was aware of the tradition, I found it instantly offensive, and yet what was perhaps more shocking is how fiercely some Dutch people will defend it. They see it as an innocent tradition because it's for children, and they claim (among other arguments) children are not inherently racist, nor aware of the issues. They talk about Piet being black because he came down a chimney - despite the Piet's traditional dress (bloomers and a flat cap) looking suspiciously like typical 17th century clothes, i.e. the time when slavery began in colonial countries like the Netherlands.

The campaigns against Zwarte Piet have had considerable if hard-fought success as most cities and larger towns now only refer to "The Petes" as Sint's helpers and the blackface has gone or been replaced with charcoal smudges (to represent the chimney he is supposed to descend down) or they are Rainbow Petes with brightly coloured wigs and face paint. It is true that Piet is the character that most children find the most endearing. There are numerous songs, books and TV shows about him, and kids like to dress up as him around this time of year, so should you come and visit Amsterdam at Christmas or in November and early December you'll almost see his image plastered around town, so it continues to be a situation that is evolving and changing, and I hope, eventually for the better!

Father Christmas or Santa Claus - as children in other countries know him - does exist for Dutch children but he is called the Kerstman ("Christmas Man") and it's really dependent on the family if he is a tradition in your house, i.e .if they get any more gifts on the night of Christmas Eve.

Other Traditions at Christmas in Amsterdam and the Netherlands

Now let's talk about how the Dutch do Christmas. Firstly, food. The main meal for Christmas is eaten on Christmas Eve, normally in the evening. There is no turkey, or traditional set menu, as such for this meal, but most Dutch families will eat some kind of roast meat with vegetables and trimmings not dissimilar from those eaten on British or American tables on Christmas Day. 

Christmas Day is known as Eerste Kerstdag (First Christmas Day) and the day after, what I as a Brit call Boxing Day, is then known as Tweede Kerstdag. Both of these days are national holidays and are typically spent with family or friends at gatherings where more special foods are prepared and eaten, or leftovers are enjoyed! Gifts can be given among families and friends but it's not my experience from what my Dutch friends tell me that they have vast numbers of gifts each or elaborate, long-running present-opening sessions.

In terms of decorations, the Dutch do have Christmas trees, and often hang Christmas lights in windows or outside, and what I think they happen to do particularly well are beautiful Christmas wreaths on front doors, or seasonal displays of winter and Christmas flowers. For me, it's one of my favourite sights watching people balance (often very tall!) Christmas trees on their bikes in the run up to Christmas.

In general, when you walk around the streets of Amsterdam on either Eerste or Tweede Kerstdag, the city is very, very quiet. Yes, hotels and some restaurants and cafes will stay open to host people, but most shops and businesses are closed, though I believe some museums will be open on Eerste and Tweede Kerstdag (if it happens to be a week day) but with possibly reduced hours, so that's worth looking into ( this page lists more info in Dutch !)

Where should I stay in Amsterdam at Christmas?

If you're planning on visiting Amsterdam at Christmas then you will find most hotels are open and many will offer Christmas special deals, though don't necessarily expect these to be super cheap offers! As I wrote here in  this article about finding the best time to visit Amsterdam , the winter months are actually the quietest in Amsterdam in terms of the number of visitors so whatever your budget, there should be enough hotel or hostel availability to choose from. Likewise, as I've mentioned above there may be a decent amount of Airbnbs available as many Dutchies leave Amsterdam over Christmas time. We've actually had a few staycations in Amsterdam at Christmas time and enjoyed really lovely, luxury and very Christmassy stays at  Hotel Ambassade , The Amstel Hotel , and Sofitel Legend Amsterdam The Grand . 

I've listed more of  my favourite hotels and hostels in Amsterdam for all budgets here , but the following are hotels I think would be love and cosy for a winter's stay in Amsterdam:  Waldorf Astoria ,  Pullitzer Hotel ,   The Dylan Hotel , and  Banks Mansion , for a little luxury. There's also  Consicous Hotels in Westerpark  and  Vondelpark ,  The Hoxton Hotel ,  The College Hotel ,  The Tire Station , the very  new Sir Adam , and  the Volks Hotel  for a little affordable style, and  Citizen M ,  Meininger Hotel ,  The Student Hotel ,  Cocomama , and  Generator Hostel  for some very decent budget accommodation that also have cosy areas to hang around in when you need to warm up or grab some downtime between sightseeing.

The Best Things to do in Amsterdam at Christmas

Below are a selection of things you can (and should!) do at Christmas in Amsterdam, some of which are directly copied from my Amsterdam in winter post because there is an obvious overlap!

Meet Sint (but come early for that!)

As mentioned above, Sinterklass comes a lot earlier to Amsterdam, and in many ways his arrival really kicks off the Christmas season in the city so timing your visit with Sint's arrival could be a great way to make you feel festive too. You can find all the details about Sinterklaas' arrival and parade in Amsterdam here .

Eat some Christmas sweet treats!

Should you make it to Sint's arrival parade or any other appearance of Sint and his Pieten you will very likely have some small round biscuits thrown at you. No, this is not punishment because you weren't good enough for presents this year (although Piet does traditionally keep track of how good kids have been all year!) but these small pepernoten  are some of the traditional Christmassy sweet treats that are dished out around this time of year.

Meaning "pepper nuts" as a literal translation, they aren't nuts and they aren't remotely peppery, rather spiced small biscuits that taste similar to the speculaas flavour that the Dutch developed using spices they acquired from countries they colonised once upon a time. While eaten all year round, speculaas cookes (which are slightly larger than the coin sized pepernoten) are also popular biscuits at this time of year. 

Other sweet treats you should be able to find in abundance in Amsterdam are oliebollen and appelflappen. Oliebollen are round, deep-fried balls of doughy goodness, normally filled with chopped apples and raisins, but they can also come with other yummy fillings. You can often find oliebollen stands serving them in the afternoons and evenings, and they'll also most likely have appelflappen too which are very similar to apple turnovers in the UK, which are just sweet pastries filled with apple sauce.

Other Christmas delicacies you should look out for include chocolate letters (typically you are given your initial as a gift from Sint), Kerststol (Christmas dried fruit loaf) and Kerstkrans (a pastry wreath filled with dried fruits).

See the Christmas Lights at Damrak and Bijenkorf

Amsterdam's answer to London's Oxford Street lights going on in the run up to Christmas, the Christmas lights and decorations inside and outside Bijenkorf are where locals and visitors alike go to soak up some sparkly sights and festive atmosphere. The Bijenkorf is Amsterdam's premier department store so it's also where you go to spend some serious money - you have been warned! The Christmas tree in Dam Square outside Bijenkorf is considered Amsterdam's main Christmas tree so definitely worth seeing.

Go to a Christmas Carol Concert

It is very possible to go to a Christmas Carol concert in Amsterdam, and it's very likely some of the songs performed will be in English. Each year dates and times will vary but a quick Google search in the run-up to your visit should tell you what's on. The best and most iconic Amsterdam music venues for such performances are Concertgebouw and the National Opera & Ballet Theatre, however, you'll also find several smaller venues, including beautiful churches, hosting Christmas music and carol concerts at various times.

Go to Church in Amsterdam at Christms

And if you do want to go to church for a Christmas service during your visit to Amsterdam, that's very possible and arguably quite a jolly lovely thing to do. There are a handful of churches in Amsterdam who regularly hold services or perform Mass in English so again a quick Google search will show you where these churches are and what time their Christmas services are to be held. Alternatively, you'll be very welcome to pop into one of the city's churches or cathedrals for their Christmas celebrations in Dutch, you just may again need to check the timings which should all be listed online, and it's worth remembering that most of the biggest Christmas celebrations will take place on the evening or during the night of Christmas Eve.

Go on a special Christmas or Winter-themed Walking Tour

If you think simply wondering the streets of Amsterdam spotting the Christmas trees, wreaths and lights that give the canals a special glow and atmosphere will be enough to get you in the festive spirit during a Christmas-time visit to Amsterdam (and I whole-heartedly agree with you that it really is enough!) then why not go on a special Christmas walking tour. There are a few available and best of all they include warm-up refreshments spots in cosy Amsterdam brown bars, cafes or restaurants where you can try some of those Dutch Christmas delicacies I was talking about. Christmas and Sales Shopping

While Amsterdam at Christmas is certainly not the shopping mecca that perhaps London is - and I personally prefer it that way, I think it's fair to say that the shopping in Amsterdam is still pretty good and while it's definitely busy in the weeks preceding Christmas it won't be anything like the crowds you find on Oxford Street. The main shopping street in Amsterdam for high street shops is Kalverstraat (which I honestly try to avoid at any time) but if Christmas or sales shopping is your thing (and all respect to you if it is - you're made of sturdier stuff than me!) then this is where you need to go to find both Dutch and international high street stores. For quirkier, more unique and independent boutiques and a prettier area to wander around, head to the 9 Streets (9 Straatjes) or take a stroll down Utrechtsestraat, Haarlemmerstraat or Rozengracht to name but a few streets lined with more unusual shops and stores. Again, like Christmas shopping, the January sales aren't as huge a deal as maybe they are in UK and USA but most shops will definitely have some reductions and special offers so come armed with a credit card... or not depending on your budget!

Enjoy Amsterdam's Christmas Markets

Not as famous as its German or even Belgian neighbours but there are some very decent Christmas markets to be found in the Netherlands. In my honest opinion, Amsterdam isn't necessarily home to them as they tend to be quite a touristy, over-priced affair, however, they still have the potential to charm if you don't mind paying twice as much as usual for a small cup of mulled wine or hot chocolate. Go See a Beautiful Christmas Tree or Two!

If markets and Christmas lights don't make you feel Christmassy, then this should. Go find one of the most beautiful Christmas trees in Amsterdam. In addition to the one just outside Bijenkorf as mentioned above, you will find the most impressive Christmas trees in the most luxurious hotels in Amsterdam (the Amstel Hotel, the Waldorf Astoria, the Conservatorium to name a few) and in other shopping centres and public spaces like Magna Plaza and inside Bijenkorf too.

Amsterdam Light Festival is reason enough to visit Amsterdam in the winter months, and it's a highlight of our year certainly and we always try to see them around Christmas time.

The best way to see the lights is by boat of course, on one of the special evening canal tour cruises , but it's also very possible to walk the route one evening, while wrapped up warm, taking your time to read about each installation and of course, popping into bars and cafes along the way to stay warm and errr, lubricated. You can also cycle the Amsterdam Light Festival route like we did.

Ice-skating at the Rijksmuseum

The most famous place to go ice skating in Amsterdam is on the temporary rink set up in front of the  Rijksmuseum , called Ice*Amsterdam, and indeed it's a pretty special place to glide around, or shuffle awkwardly from one side of the rink to the other. Kids and adults in need of some support (literal!) they will give you chairs, and of course you can hire skates. It's strongly advised that you  book a time to go ice-skating in advance .

Amsterdam at New Year

Go out and party...

I feel the least qualified person to comment on where you should go out and party for New Year's Eve in Amsterdam because I've never ventured much further than a friend's house for a New Year's party and since I became a mother they very much involve staying at home and simply doing my best to stay up until midnight.

However, I've heard from (younger, child-free!) friends of mine that Amsterdam is a great place to celebrate New Year. Not only is there an abundance of parties and club nights to choose from but the whole city comes alive with fireworks meaning you don't even need to have a spot close to the official fireworks display to enjoy some pyrotechnics - from almost anywhere you're bound to see something. However, if you do want to watch the official and city-organised fireworks display, check out the details on this page (in Dutch) .

And if you want to find yourself a party to go to then this is probably the best place to start doing your research  or here for club listings , and it also shares some other things going on in town on New Year's Eve and on New Year's Day.

But please watch out for fireworks!

Update for New Year 2019:  Last year was the last year that people could buy fireworks and light them mostly unregulated anywhere they pleased, and this year Amsterdam's council (Gemeente) will be clamping down on such unauthorised firework displays from just anywhere. This year there will be special firework zones where you can set off your fireworks. It remains to be seen exactly how this will help or improve the situation but I will let you know in early 2020!

My last suggested thing to do in Amsterdam in winter is less an activity and more a thing to do in order to stay safe. One of the few times I wish I didn't live in Amsterdam happens on New Year's Eve, and it's because the whole city turns into a huge, disorganised, chaotic, highly flammable (and of course fairly drunken!) fireworks display. This sounds amazing (and is if you love pyrotechnics and don't have sensitive ears or mind risking life or limb for a few "oohs" and "aahs"!) but for me, it feels and sounds and looks a bit like living in a war zone.

The reason this happens is that the country relaxes fireworks laws especially for New Year and most take full advantage setting off the first rockets once the sun goes down at around 4 or 5pm and then this continues all the way through until midnight when of course it goes up a notch. I consider it a quiet New Year's Eve if the sky is quiet and dark enough for me to sleep around 2 or 3 in the morning. Fireworks are let off from outside front doors on the street, off of small balconies and from roof terraces - basically anywhere! Miraculously, my son has (mostly) slept through this night for the last three years, but I still dread the noise and subsequent disruption and mess on the streets the morning after, which has without fail included a burnt out car somewhere in our neighbourhood (I wish I was joking). Also this year, we'll have a newborn so who knows what they will be like! 

So if you're heading to Amsterdam for New Year, I encourage you to be very cautious and careful about moving around the city, and to pack ear plugs if you want to get more than a few hour's kip!

Many restaurants and cafes in Amsterdam are open at this time of year and often offer special Christmas menus , usually at a fixed price . It is a good idea to make reservations, as some offer services for a certain number of customers per day.

In any case the more tourist-oriented areas such as Damrak, Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein will always have something to offer you, even if it comes at the cost of a more inflated price. Many of these restaurants are usually posted with signs , so a walking tour the day before will be enough to make good choices.

Here, in early December , one of the largest holiday markets is held not only in the Netherlands, but also including neighboring Belgium and Luxembourg.

Lose yourself in the maze of more than 300 stalls that invade the city center, each selling some kind of traditional Dutch trinket . Carols parade through the streets to spread holiday cheer and Dutch pea soup is available to warm you from the inside.

6. Experience Amsterdam's Winter Parade

The massive RAI Amsterdam center transforms at the end of each year into a winter wonderland known as Winter Paradise, filled with fun holiday activities for the whole family. Winter Paradise is open daily from mid-December to early January .

A royal visit to the city that was once called new amsterdam.

Among other stops in New York, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands will tour an exhibit focused on 400 years of Dutch history.

Good morning. It’s Thursday. We’ll get details of a royal visit to New York City. We’ll also find out what Mayor Eric Adams said when asked about pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

They did not arrive in the United States the way many couples do — the husband, who has a pilot’s license, was in the cockpit of the Boeing 737 jet, serving as the co-pilot for at least part of the flight from Europe.

Still, on their outing in New York City today, the pair, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, will do what many tourists do. They will stroll along the High Line and go to a museum.

But they said the trip had a purpose — emphasizing ties between the Netherlands and the United States and strengthening economic connections. The most recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis showed that the Netherlands ranked third in direct investment in the United States with $617.1 billion at the end of 2022, after Japan ($712 billion) and the United Kingdom ($663.4 billion).

So the royals’ itinerary includes a midday event at the Brooklyn Navy Yard about business startups and ways to accelerate clean technology .

They will also go on a tour of East Flatbush, Brooklyn, where they will “discuss urban challenges such as climate action, affordable housing and societal resilience” with community leaders, according to the Dutch government. Their day will end with a reception at Hudson Yards in Manhattan; the king and Mayor Eric Adams are expected to speak there.

The trip is not the royals’ first visit to New York. Willem-Alexander and Máxima visited in 2009, when he was the crown prince (he ascended to the throne in 2013). Máxima had lived in New York from 1996 to 2000 when she was an investment banker.

They arrived in New York City after two days in Georgia and one in Albany. (Willem-Alexander flew the plane there, too, according to a spokeswoman for the Netherlands Embassy in Washington.) Willem-Alexander’s focus was on jobs during a session at a nanotechnology center in Albany that describes itself as the largest nonprofit semiconductor research-and-development facility in the country . Willem-Alexander was all business in his brief remarks there, saying that trade with the Netherlands accounted for 57,000 jobs in New York State.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said that “New York became what it is because of the Dutch” and mentioned names like Brooklyn and the New York Knicks that have Dutch roots. She also referred to the Schuyler mansion in Albany, where Elizabeth Schuyler grew up. Of the three daughters in the household — familiar to theatergoers who’ve seen “Hamilton” — she was the one who married the man whose portrait is on the $10 bill.

Later, as the king looked on, Hochul and a Dutch trade official signed a memorandum of understanding that confirmed shared interests in advancing semiconductor research and development.

Today, after their stops in Brooklyn, Willem-Alexander and Máxima will walk through an exhibition commemorating 400 years of Dutch history in New York at the New-York Historical Society on the Upper West Side. The exhibition includes a 1626 letter that describes the “purchase” of Manhattan from Native Americans for 60 guilders, which later was said to have been $24.

The exhibition also includes a letter from three chiefs of contemporary Lenape communities whose ancestors lived in Manhattan when the Dutch arrived with hopes of establishing a Dutch republic in North America. And the exhibition displays a map of New Amsterdam, called the Castello Plan, that was painted around 1660, long before Peter Stuyvesant surrendered to the British.

So what do you say when a king and queen cross the threshold?

“I’m going to invite them to have a look at Dutch history, beginning at the very beginning,” said Louise Mirrer, the president and chief executive of the historical society .

“What’s eye-opening is to see evidence that the Dutch actually did believe they had purchased Manhattan from the Lenape,” she said. “The letter really says something about how cultures can understand each other incorrectly, or misunderstand one another. Obviously, history bore out how the misunderstanding was disadvantageous to the Lenape.”

Adams praised a reporter’s ‘summer body’

Mayor Eric Adams told a journalist who asked him about pro-Palestinian demonstrations that it looked as if he had been working out and complimented the reporter’s “summer body.”

One of the mayor’s top female advisers, sitting nearby at City Hall, shook her head in disbelief. Another deputy mayor looked down and covered her eyes.

My colleague Emma G. Fitzsimmons writes that the remark was not unusual for Adams. He often comments on people’s physical appearance or clothing. And while he speaks proudly about the number of top cabinet officials who are women, he has also made the point to note that they lead while wearing Christian Louboutin shoes, with their signature red-soled heels.

This was not the first time that Adams had singled out the reporter he said had a “summer body” — Pete Cuddihy, an intern at Fox News. At a news conference in March, when Cuddihy asked about the city’s housing crisis, the mayor said, “I like that turtleneck — people don’t wear turtlenecks anymore.”

A spokeswoman for Fox News sent a statement from Cuddihy that said: “Speaking only about my interaction on June 11 with Mayor Adams, I felt his comments towards me were friendly, and I did not feel uncomfortable.”

Adams is far from the only notable elected official who has been criticized for making comments that seem inappropriate. President Biden has made remarks about people’s physical appearance; Donald Trump often mocks people’s physical appearance and was found liable in a civil trial for sexually abusing the writer E. Jean Carroll. And the Justice Department found that Andrew Cuomo, the former New York governor, subjected female employees to a “sexually hostile work environment,” made unwanted comments and gave preferential treatment to some employees based on their physical appearance.

Adams, a Democrat, was himself accused in a lawsuit of sexually assaulting a colleague in 1993 when he was a police officer.

Fabien Levy, a deputy mayor and Adams’s chief spokesman, said the mayor “would never intentionally make someone feel uncomfortable. He’s a warm and engaging person who talks to New Yorkers the way any regular New Yorker speaks to one another.”

Anyone who lived or worked in Midtown Manhattan in the 1970s and ’80s knew Gene Palma as the guy who “played” Sixth Avenue. He even had a cameo in “Taxi Driver.”

With shoe-polish blackened hair and heavy makeup, Gene would play his drum on the sidewalk. Sometimes, he would bang his sticks on newspaper vending machines, or sit on the curb and play the street itself.

In the winter, to avoid the frigid north wind that swept down the avenues, he would move onto the side streets. Once, when I saw him on 52nd Street, I asked why he moved onto the side streets every winter.

“The sound’s better,” he said.
