Lonely Plan-it: How to plan a trip to see the northern lights in Europe

In Lonely Plan-it, we take you step-by-step through how we planned some of the most complicated travel adventures, so you can recreate them yourself with ease. Here, Icelandic writer Egill Bjarnason explains how to plan a trip to see the northern lights.

In the eyes of my international friends, the northern lights always make me look like an eccentric sensationalist describing a hallucination – attempting, quite successfully, to freeze them to death on a dark, open field somewhere nearby my home in small-town  Iceland .

It’s never the best start to their Iceland visit, especially given my tendency to promise them “millions and millions of auroras” in return for their “life-changing decision” to fly to my homeland. But I never said when the lights would show themselves. So, we usually head back, wait another day, review the solar-wind charts, refill the thermos and then head out again.

There is a science to predicting the phenomena – but ultimately catching the northern lights comes down to a mix of luck and effort, and a bit of planning step-by-step. Here’s how to increase your chances of having an epic northern lights experience.

The black sand beaches of Iceland with the northern lights above.

Step 1: Choose where to go

Where you go should depend on your time and interests – but Iceland is a safe bet

Contrary to the name, the northern lights do not brighten with every northern latitude. They appear, instead, on top of the globe like a doughnut, known as the Aurora Oval. This is good news for travelers who don’t want to trek all the way to the North Pole – the oval latitudes 60° to 75° North range from  Bergen, Norway (Europe’s capital of rain) to Salla, Lapland (the self-proclaimed coldest town of Finland).

Among Nordic destinations ( Finland , Sweden , Norway , Denmark , Iceland), the middle-of-the-aurora-belt Iceland is the easiest place to get to for most travelers.  Reykjavík , the northernmost capital, is a major hub for international flights and a good place to seek out the phenomenon. It also has the added benefit of being popular for plenty of outdoor adventures like hikes , so you will have plenty to fill your time with when you’re not chasing auroras.

But there’s no need to limit yourself – more far-flung Arctic destinations have the benefit of constant darkness, or very brief hours of sunlight. In  Tromsø, Norway , I saw the auroras at 5pm on a December afternoon last year. Sailing in Scoresby Sound,  Greenland , some years ago, I saw them as early as late August.

Aurora borealis shining in the night sky seen from Glass Igloos.

Where you go may also depend on what else you want to do on your trip when you’re not trying to spot the lights. Lapland is a popular destination for families at Christmas time, where a visit to Santa is a possibility. Heading to hip Sweden means you could enjoy a city break in Stockholm before heading to somewhere like  Abisko National Park  (on a 17-hour train ride, or a faster flight). Even though the lights might be your number-one priority, it’s also good to plan some other incredible experiences – on the off chance you don’t see the lights you'll still have a memorable experience.

Step 2: Determine the best time to go

Dark nights are a must for seeing the lights

Aurora hunters – a professional title in the high North – claim the best time to see vivid northern lights is around the solar equinoxes, when day and night are of equal length. Statistically speaking, this claim has some merit – yet the correlation is hardly enough to dictate your travel plans. Dark nights, however long, are the fundamentals. The forces creating the spectacular streaks of colors are active year-round; we just don’t see them during bright summer nights. While the winter brings the cold, it also increases your chances of seeing the nighttime illumination.

The northern lights are caused by solar activity. A flow of charged particles from the sun, called the solar wind, slams into the earth’s magnetic field and cause atoms in the upper atmosphere to glow. The lights appear quite suddenly, their intensity varying – but on any given day, scientists publish a forecast based on solar winds in the past three days to predict aurora strength.

In the Nordics, the Met Office of each country operates a nine-scale forecast every day. (The scale is not a normal curve: it usually hovers around level three, while strength beyond level five is a rare solar storm.)

Once you have your destination, find the necessary websites to track their aurora activity. For example, Iceland’s Meteorological Office has a daily forecast you can check out.

Step 3: Find a trip that is right for you

You don’t have to go remote, but you may want to trust a professional

Some tourists put too much emphasis on escaping city lights. It’s enough to just leave immediate light pollution like street lights and houses to get a clear view of darkness; venturing five hundred miles off the grid won’t make a difference.

That’s not to say venturing to some remote, dark valley is not worth the trip. For one, taking part in other activities like snowmobiling makes it easier to wait outside.

Tourists riding on snowmobiles through snowy conditions in Lapland.

Going with a tour operator provides a good structure to the experience, and a chance to try something new like dog sledding, boat cruising, cruising in a super-jeep or snowmobiling. Guides will also have the resources and experience to help track the forecasts and seek out the lights. And they’ll often know the best spots for viewing the lights, with back-up spots if the weather isn’t cooperating.

If you want to travel independently, plan extensively and take safety precautions against cold conditions – especially if you aren’t used to them at home.

Another clever form of help are remote hotels with wake-up service by a dedicated watchperson, whose job it is to wait for the lights to be visible and alert the guests. This means you can choose to sleep instead of patiently waiting in the cold .

Step 4: Figure out what gear you need

Big surprise: you’ll need to pack warm

Prepare like you’re going to a mountain summit, with no trees or buildings sheltering you from the cool wind. Searching for the auroras is a waiting game – and success can come down to that extra layer you thought was unnecessary. Invest in a thermal underlayer that will retain heat. If you’re going on a tour, ask for specifics on what you should bring for the local climate. Many tour companies will also provide the sort of heavy-duty outer layer you might not have lying around the house.

A photographer stands with their camera on the beach at night, photographing the northern lights.

Spotting the lights is sure to stick with you, but you may also want to capture this stunning sight for posterity. When it comes to capturing them, note that the northern lights are photographed at shutter-speed of five to 20 seconds. A tripod is an absolute must for a strong picture; better yet, invest in a remote shutter release. The newest smartphones are still able to capture surprisingly good footage, but hardly promising enough to make your work shine in the competitive field of #auroras.

Step 5: Plan for the worst and hope for the best

Manage your expectations and check the cancellation policy

Managing expectations is a part of any northern lights journey: you may have come a long way, and it seems only fair the clouds throw open the curtains for a spectacular show. It helps to go at it in the company of someone else, I think, to share the frustration – and eventually the excitement.

When booking with a tour operator, check their cancellation policy. Some day-tour companies go ahead even when the sky is cloudy and the forecast bleak; they won’t refund customers who come along but often allow people to reschedule with short notice. Few have the confidence of the Norwegian cruise liner Hurtigruten, which offers the Northern Light Promise: a full refund in case the promise gets broken.

If I could do it all again…

Living in Iceland means the northern lights are at my doorstep. Generally, they appear every other clear night from September to April. If you’re like me, who tries to impress foreign friends by pointing to the dark sky and shouting out “ta-da” from the balconies of a three-story house, finding them can still appear to take a lifetime.

If I could recommend anything to increase your chances it’s this: a seven-day trip gives you very promising chances of a sighting, over 10 is almost a promise. Fourteen? It’s time to go.

Where can you see the Northern Lights?

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to see the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights are at their peak from late September to late March.

Where can I see the Northern Lights?

The best places to see the Northern Lights are all located in the “Auroral zone” – an area that stretches around the Northern Hemisphere at a latitude of about 66 to 69 degrees north – including parts of:

What causes the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights are caused by electrically charged particles from the sun colliding with elements in our atmosphere (such as nitrogen and oxygen), creating brightly colored dancing displays of light.

Am I guaranteed to see the Northern Lights?

While Northern Light displays can never be guaranteed, as they are a natural phenomenon, our local leaders do their best to ensure you get to see nature’s greatest spectacle.

Can the Northern Lights be predicted?

Yes, the Northern Lights can be predicted to some extent.

The activity level of the Northern Lights depends on many things (of which some are predictable and some are somewhat random), including sunspots, coronal holes, solar flares and geomagnetic activity.

If you’re not an astronomer, your best bet is to check the local Aurora forecast – a KP-index number of 3 or higher means you have a good chance of seeing the Lights.

Can I see the Northern Lights with the naked eye?

Yes, you can see the Northern Lights with the naked eye. Humans can most easily see the green and white of the lights at night. A camera, however, does not have the same limitations as the human eye, so the colors may appear brighter and more brilliant in photos.

Can I photograph the Northern Lights?

Of course! There is no magic recipe for capturing the Northern Lights. Still, you’ll want to set your camera on a tripod and ensure it has a manual mode functionality, so you can adjust the aperture and shutter speed to capture the spectacular display best.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT NORTHERN LIGHTS TOURS

For tips on viewing the northern lights, read on. We’ve answered the most commonly asked questions about Nordic aurora borealis tours here to help you make your dream trip a reality.

Alternatively, find out how to make a booking , have a look at our FAQs , or learn about our Book With Confidence travel plan.

1. ARE THE NORDICS SAFE TO TRAVEL TO?

Yes, the Nordics are widely regarded as safe for visitors. Actually, the Nordic nations – Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland – continually rank among the top 10 safest places in the world . This is because they have low crime rates, good standards of healthcare, and excellent road safety.

2. WHAT ARE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

The northern lights, or aurora borealis, are a natural phenomenon. You can see them illuminating the sky when charged particles from solar flares collide with atoms in the Earth’s atmosphere, near the North Pole. This collision creates varied shapes and colours that ripple, flash or glow in the sky.

3. WHAT MONTHS CAN YOU SEE THE AURORA BOREALIS?

You have the best chance of spotting the aurora borealis in the winter months – October to April. To make out the colours of the aurora, you need dark winter nights. In the summer, daylight hours are so long that you’ll find the sky is too bright to see the glowing lights.

As it is a natural occurrence, spotting the northern lights is not guaranteed. But you can increase your chances of witnessing them by visiting the Arctic Circle in winter.

4. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

As you need a dark sky to distinguish the aurora, the best time to see the northern lights is at night. The peak hours tend to be between 11 PM and 2 AM, which is why your guided tour will likely depart after 9 PM.

You could also stay at a hotel with an aurora wake-up service. The staff will let you know if the lights come out late in the night, so you don’t have to stay up waiting for them!

The best time of year to see the northern lights is winter, between October and April. This is when Nordic nights are the longest and darkest, which means you have higher chances of catching sight of the aurora.

Winter is a great time to visit the Nordics for other reasons too. Check out these guides to the top winter activities you can enjoy:

Things to do in Norway in winter

Things to do in Iceland in winter

Things to do in Lapland in winter

5. WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

You can see the aurora borealis at high northern latitudes, especially around the Arctic Circle, as this is where solar activity is strongest. That’s why the Nordic region is the best place to see the northern lights. Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Svalbard all lie within or near the Arctic Circle.

In fact, Iceland and the northern regions of Norway, Sweden and Finland are located within the “aurora zone”. Also known as the “northern lights belt”, this is a latitudinal band between 65-72°N where high auroral frequency and intensity occurs. Visit this zone for the best chance of seeing the aurora.

6. WHERE CAN YOU SEE THE AURORA BOREALIS IN SCANDINAVIA?

Norway, Sweden and Denmark are the countries that make up Scandinavia. If you want to go to Scandinavia to hunt for the aurora borealis, your best bet is to visit the northern parts of this region – Swedish Lapland and Northern Norway. It is unlikely you’ll see the aurora in Denmark.

You can witness the northern lights in the neighbouring Nordic nations of Finland and Iceland too. Although these countries aren’t technically part of Scandinavia, they have many similarities and also happen to be great places to catch the aurora borealis!

Lapland – an area covering northern Sweden and Finland – is a fantastic destination for aurora chasing. You could head to Rovaniemi and Kemi in Finnish Lapland, or Abisko National Park near Kiruna in Swedish Lapland.

Or visit Northern Norway for your aurora borealis tour. Take your pick from Norwegian destinations such as Tromsø, Svalbard, Kirkenes, the Lofoten Islands and Nordkapp (North Cape).

Alternatively, go in search of the aurora borealis in Iceland. With its wide open skies and location near the Arctic Circle, you could see the lights from anywhere in the country. For your best chances though, head away from towns with street lights so you can spot the colours more easily.

In Scandinavia you could seek out the aurora borealis in the countryside or on the coast. Plus, not only can you enjoy northern lights tours, but also bucket list activities like dog sledding, snowmobiling, and staying in an ice hotel.

Discover more reasons to visit Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland on our ultimate Scandinavia guide .

7. HOW TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

To see the aurora borealis, you need to be in a northern country on a clear, dark night, away from artificial lights. Although the aurora don’t show up on demand, these top tips will give you the best chances of witnessing them.

Firstly, make sure you visit northern regions close to the Arctic Circle. Iceland, Northern Norway, Svalbard and Lapland are the best destinations to see the northern lights in Europe.

Secondly, time your aurora borealis tour for the European winter. The long, dark nights will help you spot the colours lighting up the sky.

Thirdly, avoid light pollution found in built-up areas. This means heading into the countryside where there is less artificial light compared to towns and cities. You could spend some days out in remote areas, or opt for guided evening tours from your city base instead.

Another thing you can do for northern light viewings is check the weather and aurora forecast . Although you can’t do this very far in advance, during your trip you’ll be able to find out if the evening will be clear of cloud or rain and if solar activity will be strong.

You’d also increase your chances of seeing the aurora borealis by taking a guided tour. A local expert would accompany you and take you to all the best spots, sharing their insider knowledge with you.

Read our article on how to see the northern lights for more viewing tips.

8. HOW LONG DO THE NORTHERN LIGHTS LAST?

When the aurora borealis are treating you to their glorious light show, you might find they glow for a few minutes. The lights can show up several times in one night, or last for a couple of hours in one go.

There is no rule as to how long the aurora borealis last, of course, as they are a natural occurrence. If you see them for yourself, no doubt you’ll cherish every second of their beautiful magic.

9. HOW DO YOU PHOTOGRAPH THE AURORA BOREALIS?

The northern lights can be tricky to capture on camera, but with some preparation and the right equipment you can do it. Here are some top tips for photographing the northern lights:

  • Use an SLR camera with manual focus
  • Bring a tripod as you’ll need to do a long exposure shot
  • Get a remote shutter release so you don’t have to touch the camera at all
  • Use a slow shutter speed of between 15 and 30 seconds

For more tips on photographing the aurora, see our northern lights travel guide .

10. WHAT SHOULD YOU WEAR TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

It can get rather cold in the Nordic winter, especially if there’s a cool wind. The last thing you want is to feel the chill while you hunt for the aurora borealis at night. That’s why it’s important you pack the right clothing before your trip.

Many northern lights tours will provide you with thermal suits to help you stay warm while you’re out chasing the aurora. It’s also recommended that you wear warm layers underneath.

Here is an essential packing list:

  • Insulated jacket and trousers (windproof and waterproof)
  • Thermal wool underlayers
  • Warm hat, gloves and scarf
  • Warm and sturdy boots

Get more packing advice by reading our experts’ tips and tricks on dressing for northern lights viewing .

11. CAN I CHOOSE THE ARRIVAL DATE?

Yes, you can select your chosen arrival date online when reserving your Nordic Visitor tour. For northern lights packages, the arrival dates are between October and April as this is the aurora viewing season.

12. CAN I EXTEND MY TOUR BY A DAY OR TWO?

Absolutely! If you’d like to spend more time in a particular destination, you can request this when booking your tour online. Your dedicated travel consultant will get in touch to confirm the extra days with you.

If you are taking a small group tour, you can add extra nights to the start or end of your trip. This is because the group tour itself is fixed as you will be exploring with fellow visitors on a fixed itinerary.

13. WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY FLIGHT TICKETS?

You should book your flights once your Nordic Visitor package is confirmed. We recommend you check flights beforehand to find appropriate dates and prices, but only purchase them after your travel consultant has secured your northern lights tour.

Your Nordic Visitor consultant will send you a confirmation email with all the details you need to buy suitable flights.

14. WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR MY TRIP?

The weather is somewhat unpredictable in the Nordics, no matter the time of year you visit. In winter you should always come prepared for cold temperatures, which means bringing warm clothing. Here are the essential items that we recommend you pack for your trip:

  • Warm jumpers or fleeces
  • Waterproof and thermal jackets
  • Gloves, scarves and hats
  • Insulated, waterproof boots
  • Thermal underlayers
  • Waterproof trousers

The Northern Lights are natural phenomena and there is no guarantee that we will see them, despite the most professional, experienced guides. Therefore, there is no refund or free tour if we don’t see the Northern Lights. Even when we find the best conditions, we might not see the lights on some nights.

The strength of the lights will also vary, as well as whether they dance in the sky. The lights in the sky are sometimes not as strong as in the pictures.

The Aurora Borealis is a natural phenomenon that can be observed in both Abisko and Kiruna. The northern lights look similar in Abisko and Kiruna due to their close proximity and similar latitudes.

Abisko is known for its clear skies and low light pollution, making it an excellent location for viewing the Northern Lights. It also has a unique microclimate that tends to have less cloud cover than other areas in the region, which can increase your chances of seeing the aurora.

Kiruna is another popular location for aurora viewing, and it has a range of accommodation options and activities for visitors. While it can be more crowded than Abisko, it also has a wider range of services and amenities available.

Ultimately, both Abisko and Kiruna offer excellent opportunities for viewing the Northern Lights, and which one is “better” depends on your personal preferences and priorities.

The night of your tour, Lights of Vikings Team will always take you to the best given location to maximize your chances of seeing the Aurora, far from crowds and light pollution.

trip northern lights

An aurora is a natural light display that can appear as brilliant green, yellow, red, blue and purple light patterns, spirals or dynamic flickers covering the night sky.

The Aurora Borealis originates on the sun’s surface with a massive explosion of electromagnetic matter, which projects a stream of charged particles known as solar wind into space. When these particles approach Earth a few nights later, they distort our magnetic field. The excited, ionised atoms that enter our atmosphere through the poles emit light which, when emitted on a large scale, causes the phenomenon of the Southern and Northern Lights.

There is no best place to witness an aurora which, in our opinion, only adds to the mystery and appeal surrounding them. It is most frequently visible in high-latitude regions in the Arctic and Antarctica, but most accessible between 10° and 20° of the North Pole in a band called the ‘auroral zone’. It’s important to understand that this oval-shaped halo can shift slightly, and there are many factors at play that affect how bright the lights appear or if it’s possible to see them at all.

To increase your chances of seeing the Northern Lights, be prepared to venture into the heart of the Arctic, to destinations such as Greenland, Iceland, Northern Canada and Northern Norway. While aurora activity happens year-round, the best time to witness the Northern Lights is during the long winter months, when the windows for viewing them each night are longer.

Why Join a Northern Lights Cruise with Aurora Expeditions?

First, what is this strange natural phenomenon? An aurora is a natural light display that can appear as brilliant green, yellow, red, blue and purple light patterns, spirals or dynamic flickers covering the night sky. The aurora borealis originates on the sun’s surface with a massive explosion of electromagnetic matter, which projects a stream of charged particles known as solar wind into space. When these particles approach Earth a few nights later, they distort our magnetic field. The excited, ionised atoms that enter our atmosphere through the poles emit light which, when emitted on a large scale, causes the phenomenon of the Southern and Northern Lights. Northern Lights experiences are best with a dark sky as the aurora is not strong enough to outshine the sunlight.

There is no best place to witness an aurora which, in our opinion, only adds to the mystery and appeal surrounding them. This is why Aurora Expeditions’ Northern Lights tours don’t focus on one spot or location. The Northern Lights are most frequently visible in high-latitude regions in the Arctic, but most accessible between 10° and 20° of the North Pole in a band called the ‘auroral zone’. It’s important to understand that this oval-shaped halo can shift slightly, and there are many factors at play, like weather conditions and clear nights, that affect how bright the lights appear or if it’s possible to see them at all so our Northern Lights tour reflects this.

While aurora borealis activity happens year-round, the best time for a Northern Lights adventure is during the long winter months, when the windows for viewing them each night are longer and the skies darker. The season in the Northern Hemisphere is generally from September through April.

Unique Northern Lights Experiences

Our Northern Lights cruise sticks to the aurora zone in the Arctic Circle, but seeing the lights dance is only one part of your Northern Lights adventure. Exploring the polar regions provides you with opportunities like no other.

By night you will seek out the Northern Lights, but by day we will try to get you off the ship 2-3 times per day (depending on the weather and conditions) so you can get the most out of your time in the Arctic. Walking and bird-watching are popular activities as they offer a chance to witness the unique wildlife in the destinations you visit.

Take a polar plunge in the icy waters of the Arctic Circle, or stay above the water on a Zodiac cruise through the fields of icebergs. Zodiac cruises allow you to get closer to some of the wildlife and landscapes you’ll see throughout your Northern Lights tour. If you have the necessary experience you should also consider adding sea kayaking to your Northern Lights itinerary.

Enrichment is an important component of our expeditions – we hope that you will leave changed and become lifelong ambassadors for the natural world and the wild, important destinations we visit. Your world-class Expedition Team will be on hand to answer your questions about the aurora borealis and how it comes to appear in the night sky, Arctic wildlife , geological formations and the history of the places we visit.

Northern Lights Cruise Regions

Greenland Northern Lights

While Greenland is one of the best countries in the world for witnessing the Northern Lights, getting there can be challenging and often what holds people back. The good news is that, once you’re there, you can see the Northern Lights from almost anywhere in the country – even in the heart of its capital city, Nuuk! This is because Greenland’s population is tiny and scattered across small, remote communities, so it has minimal light pollution. Not many Northern Lights tours go to Greenland but Aurora Expeditions Northern Lights cruises explore using a small expedition ship which makes it easy to visit the prime locations in Greenland to see the Northern Lights.

Some other superb options for aurora viewing in Greenland are Kangerlussuaq, Sisimiut, Ilulissat, Kulusuk and Tasiilaq.

Zodiac cruising in Svalbard

Svalbard Northern Lights

Every year, millions of tourists flock to the Arctic for a chance to witness the phenomenon of the Northern Lights. However, few venture to the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, located between the Norwegian mainland and the North Pole, which offers exceptional conditions to see the Northern Lights, not to mention dramatic fjords, rugged mountain ranges and a huge variety of unique wildlife, including majestic polar bears.

Northern Lights display over a frozen lake in northern Canada

Northern Lights Canada

Northern Canada is the best place to see the Northern Lights in Canada, in remote places with minimal light pollution. Nunavut in the heart of Canada’s High Arctic is a prime aurora borealis viewing country, with its close proximity to the North Pole and vast expanses of tundra. Consider visiting a remote traditional Inuit community for an unparalleled night of dazzling aurora displays.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, Iceland

Northern Lights Iceland

Aside from volcanoes, glaciers and geysers, one of the main reasons people have Iceland on their travel bucket list is because they dream of seeing the Northern Lights on display. Iceland is a sparsely populated country, so you don’t have to go far to get away from light pollution.

With longer hours with dark skies and clear night skies, the Westfjords and North Iceland are the best regions to head to if you want to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. There are many fantastic remote locations in South Iceland where you can witness the aurora, including the popular Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. The Seltjarnarnes peninsula is a prime viewing area as there is minimal light pollution. There are also plenty of places near Reykjavík you can head to if you’re short on time, including Thingvellir National Park.

Northern Lights display in the Lofted Islands in Norway

Northern Lights Norway

Norway is often the first country that comes to mind when people think of the Northern Lights. The Northern Lights are a prominent feature of the night sky throughout the country and have even influenced folklore and indigenous culture. Because Norway is so long, the seasons change at different times, with summer lasting longer in the south and winter lasting longer in the north. As a rule of thumb, the further north you go, the longer your window is for seeing them.

The ‘auroral zone’ starts in Northern Norway just above the Lofoten Islands and extends up the coast to the North Cape (Nordkapp) and beyond. You will observe the same light display from anywhere in this region, but from a different angle. Some of our favourite places in Northern Norway to witness the Northern Lights include Tromsø, Kirkenes, the Lofoten Islands, Bodø and the North Cape.

Northern Lights Cruise Activities

See The Northern Lights with Aurora Expeditions and our Expedition Team will take you on excursions unique to the High Arctic, fully included in the cost of your expedition. For those interested in a little extra excitement, there are optional activities designed to get you closer to the action. Our Northern Lights expeditions provide a mix of comfort and adventure; for those willing to explore the Arctic the memories will last a lifetime.

7 of the Best Northern Lights Cruises

Set sail on these itineraries to try to spot the aurora borealis.

trip northern lights

If seeing the northern lights , also known as the aurora borealis, is on your travel list, you've probably already looked into the best places to see them : northern destinations like Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Iceland , and Scandinavia among them. But have you ever considered visiting those destinations by sea rather than land? Many cruise lines not only offer itineraries to those regions but also offer northern lights-specific sailings, too. Cruising is particularly appealing for northern lights seekers because the ships can access remote areas without light pollution, allowing guests to see the aurora in its full brilliance. So if you haven't yet seen the northern lights — or if you're looking to see them again — here are seven northern lights cruises to help you accomplish your goal.

Viking: In Search of the Northern Lights

RelaxFoto.de/Getty Images

Over the course of 13 days, a luxurious Viking ocean ship transports guests from London to Amsterdam , then all the way up the coast of Norway and north of the Arctic Circle, before returning back south to the Norwegian city of Bergen. (Although some sailings operate in reverse.) The Norwegian fjords themselves are a sight to behold — and if they're paired with the northern lights, that's all the better! The sailings run from January to March when daylight is limited in the Arctic Circle, making for prime aurora opportunities. Rates start from $4,999 per person in 2023, and it should be noted that Viking is an adults-only cruise line.

Aurora Expeditions: Northern Lights Explorer

Considering the cruise line is named after the atmospheric phenomenon, it should come as no surprise that it offers a northern lights itinerary. At 19 to 22 days long, depending on the departure, there is plenty of time to hope for a northern lights appearance — or two, or three, or more. The sailings start in the northern Norwegian city of Kirkenes before sailing south along the coast, heading back north to the remote archipelago of Jan Mayen (a polar bear hotspot), over to the scenic fjords of East Greenland, and around the northern half of Iceland. The longer itinerary continues with a visit to the Faroe Islands and disembarkation in Bergen, Norway. Aurora offers just one of these sailings per year in September. Rates start from $19,705.50 per person in 2023.

Hurtigruten: The Classic Roundtrip Voyage

Hurtigruten is something of an outlier in this group because it doesn't offer specific northern lights itineraries. But the routes of this coastal ferry company in Norway just happen to traverse the perfect latitudes to see the aurora. In fact, Hurtigruten is so confident you'll see the northern lights during the auroral season (Sept. 26 through March 31) that if they don't show up on a sailing of 11 days or more, the company will give you a free six- or seven-day cruise to try again. For the best odds of seeing the northern lights, we suggest the 12-day round-trip itinerary from Bergen up the coast of Norway and back. Rates start from $2,309 per person in 2023.

Quark Expeditions: Under the Northern Lights

Specializing in polar voyages, Quark Expeditions knows a thing or two about the northern lights, which is why the company offers aurora sailings each fall. These 14-day itineraries cruise from Iceland to Greenland and back from September into early October. As the majority of the voyage takes place above the Arctic Circle, the odds of seeing the northern lights are high, especially as solar activity tends to peak around the autumnal and vernal equinoxes in September and March, respectively. And if they don't show, well, you still get to explore Iceland's Westfjords and Greenland's eastern shores — and that's a worthwhile journey in itself. Rates start from $8,501 per person in 2023.

Oceanwide Expeditions: East Greenland Scoresby Sund - Aurora Borealis

If you don't have two or three weeks to take off work to go northern lights watching, consider Oceanwide Expeditions' eight-day aurora borealis sailings from Iceland to Greenland and back. The adventure begins in Akureyri, the unofficial capital of north Iceland, before heading for Greenland's breathtaking Scoresby Sund, the largest fjord system in the world. If you do have a little more time, you can opt for the 13-day Spitsbergen - Northeast Greenland - Aurora Borealis itinerary, which embarks in the Svalbard archipelago before sailing to Greenland and down to Iceland. Both take place in the late summer into early fall, as darkness returns to the skies in the Arctic. Rates for the eight-day itinerary start from $4,600 per person for the 2023 sailings.

Cunard: Norway and Northern Lights

Each fall, one or two of the ships in Cunard's legendary fleet head north for Norway, where guests are treated to scenic cruising along the coast. The 12-day itineraries depart from Southampton, England, before traveling to Alesund, Tromsø, Narvik, and Haugesund, sailing through majestic fjords along the way. Since the ships sail this itinerary from October to November, the skies will be dark enough to see the northern lights, should they decide to appear. In 2023, the voyage will be undertaken by Queen Victoria , while next season, the Queen Mary 2 and the upcoming Queen Anne will take the reins. Rates start from $1,689 per person in 2023.

P&O: Norway

The most affordable option on this list, British cruise line P&O operates 12-day sailings to Norway year-round, but during the auroral season, there's a strong chance you'll see the northern lights while onboard. Guests embark in Southampton, England, before sailing north to Norway, traveling as far north as Tromsø, well north of the Arctic Circle. We recommend splurging on a room with windows for the best northern lights viewing options. However, those in interior cabins can always run up on deck — which you should do anyway to witness the full grandeur of the atmospheric phenomenon. Rates start from $1,385 per person in 2023.

There's no other experience on Earth quite like witnessing the northern lights. Also known as the aurora borealis, this spellbinding phenomenon – when brilliant hues of green, yellow and purple dance across the night sky – is visible in Alaska from late August to late April. Clear, dark evenings away from the ambient light of cities provide prime viewing opportunities.

Alaska is one of the best places in the world to see the aurora borealis – especially locations in the Interior and Arctic regions, such as Coldfoot, Wiseman, Utqiagvik (Barrow) and Nome. Fairbanks is regarded as a top location due to its position directly under the auroral oval, a ring-shaped area in the far north where aurora activity is generally concentrated. The Southcentral region of Alaska, where you'll find Anchorage, Talkeetna and the Mat-Su Valley, also offers basecamps for northern lights viewing.

If you're hoping to see the magic aboard an Alaska cruise in 2024 or 2025, then you just might be in luck. Experts predict the next few seasons will be particularly good for northern lights sightings, due to increased solar activity. While seeing the northern lights is never guaranteed, your best chance of seeing them is during these high-activity solar cycles, which occur about every 11 years.

Find your perfect cruise

When to take a cruise to view the northern lights

The Alaska cruise season falls between May and September, with a few cruise lines extending the season from April to October.

Holland America Line recommends booking a cruise or cruisetour (a combined sea and land package) during the autumnal equinox, or the official start of autumn, which falls around Sept. 22 in the Northern Hemisphere. Disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field are more likely around the autumn and spring equinoxes, which could increase your chances of seeing the aurora. For the best views, Holland America advises heading to higher ground in Anchorage , to vantage points like Glen Alps, the Knit River Valley and Point Woronzof.

Princess Cruises also suggests booking your vacation in the fall. September is an ideal month to watch for the spectacle in the sky as the nights start getting longer and darker. The elusive display is most likely to appear on crystal-clear evenings between midnight and 4 a.m. While you can see incredible light shows in Anchorage, consider an extended tour of Fairbanks or the Interior that takes you away from light pollution (such as to Denali National Park & Preserve).

U.S. News has compiled a list of the nine best cruises and cruisetours to give you the optimal chance of viewing these whimsical lights in the sky, with a focus on sailings around the autumnal equinox in 2024 and later dates in September 2025. We've also included an early sailing in April, before the end of the aurora season. (Keep in mind: Many of these trips and itineraries are also available on other dates during the season. Cruise fares were accurate at the time of publication.)

9-Day Denali: Tour D8l

This nine-day land and sea tour on Nieuw Amsterdam includes an opportunity to search for the northern lights in Fairbanks, one of the best places to see them in Alaska (and in the world). Holland America offers a four-hour aurora borealis viewing tour outside the city in a yurt; it operates between the last week of August and mid-September.

If you'd like more options, there's no shortage of tour operators in town that can take you on a northern lights adventure in Fairbanks. You can even fly into town early to stay in the wilderness in an igloo with clear views of the night sky at Borealis Basecamp, located less than 30 miles from Fairbanks. Be sure to notify your hotel that you'd like a wake-up call or a knock on the door if the northern lights are on display.

You'll have more opportunities to see the aurora when you head to Denali National Park & Preserve for a stay at Holland America 's exclusive 60-acre McKinley Chalet Resort, located near the entrance to the park. After a full day exploring the park by ATV or a bucket list flightseeing adventure over Denali, you'll have another chance to see the colorful light display in Alaska's wilderness after midnight. The rest of the cruisetour itinerary includes scenic cruising days, with one spent in beautiful Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve. You'll also call on Juneau , Skagway and Ketchikan before disembarking in Vancouver .

14-Day Denali: Tour D3c

This 14-day adventure includes scenic cruising of the Inside Passage, Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and College Fjord, with stops in the ports of Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Whittier and Seward. You'll then have nearly a week on land in Anchorage, Denali National Park & Preserve and Fairbanks to go aurora hunting. If you spend an extra night or two in Fairbanks at the end of the trip, you'll be in town for the autumnal equinox, maximizing your northern lights viewing opportunities.

With the extra time in town, plan to book the Arctic Circle Air Adventure with Northern Alaska Tour Company. This unforgettable journey takes you on a flight over the Yukon River and Brooks Range, just east of the Gates of the Arctic National Park & Preserve. You'll then land 60 miles north of the Arctic Circle in the community of Coldfoot and receive an Arctic Circle Adventure Certificate before your return flight to Fairbanks.

7-Day Glacier Discovery Northbound

If you're interested in a cruise-only option and would prefer to arrange the land portion independently, consider this seven-day voyage on Nieuw Amsterdam. The itinerary includes three scenic cruising days, with one day in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve, and calls on the ports of Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway before disembarking in Whittier, which sits roughly 60 miles south of Anchorage.

From Whittier, there are many options to transfer to Anchorage (by rail or by road), including the iconic Glacier Discovery Train. Plan to stay a few evenings in Anchorage with a multiday guided aurora tour, or reserve a spot on an evening outing in search of the northern lights.

11-Day Denali Explorer – Tour DA4

This 11-day cruisetour begins with a seven-night voyage embarking from Vancouver on Royal Princess or Sapphire Princess . The itinerary includes three sea days, two of which are dedicated to scenic cruising through Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and College Fjord. You'll make stops in the coastal towns of Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Anchorage (Whittier) before disembarking to depart for the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge via the line's direct-to-the-wilderness rail service.

Spending three nights at the lodge – located just outside the entrance to the park – in mid-September will offer excellent opportunities for aurora viewing. Keep your fingers crossed for high solar activity and clear, dark skies. Throughout your trip, learn photography tips to capture the mesmerizing display through Princess' North to Alaska Program. After your stay in Denali, you'll take a motor coach to Anchorage and stay overnight in a hotel there to finish up your voyage.

10-Day On Your Own – Tour BBX

The 10-Day On Your Own cruisetour with Princess Cruises begins with three nights on land, including overnights in Fairbanks, the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge and the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge. While at the Mt. McKinley resort, be sure to check out the lodge's treehouse. Designed by Pete Nelson of Animal Planet's "Treehouse Masters," this vantage point offers impressive views of Denali – the highest peak in North America at 20,310 feet above sea level.

Before heading off to bed, get an update on aurora activity from the tracker on your smartphone, especially if you have clear skies that night; the app My Aurora Forecast & Alerts has excellent reviews. Request a wake-up call to have the Princess lodge staff call your room if the dazzling bands of light begin to dance in the sky. The next day, after traveling to Whittier by motor coach, you'll embark on your cruise to Vancouver aboard Royal Princess or Sapphire Princess.

The voyage from Whittier includes three sea days for relaxing activities on board the ship, with two days of scenic cruising around Hubbard Glacier and in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve. During your time in Glacier Bay, park rangers will board the ship to offer commentary about this captivating wilderness area's pristine glaciers and abundant wildlife. Younger cruisers and teens will also appreciate learning about this spectacular place through the Junior Ranger program, which features interactive games, activities and presentations. (All cruise ships visiting the park participate in this program with the National Park Service.) Ports of call for the rest of the journey include Icy Strait Point or Skagway (depending on the cruise), then Juneau and Ketchikan. The voyage ends in Vancouver.

The Great National Parks Expedition Cruisetour

Celebrity's pre-cruise national parks adventure takes guests on a wildlife viewing quest to destinations in the north and the Interior where you can watch for the aurora. The 12-night trip begins in Fairbanks with a free day to explore.

Consider a trip to the University of Alaska Museum of the North, which features exhibits on Arctic dinosaurs, diverse wildlife, Alaska Native cultures and 2,000 years of Alaska art. You could also visit the impressive collection of antique cars and clothing at the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum, or take a walk with the reindeer into the woods at Running Reindeer Ranch. The second day in town includes a Riverboat Discovery ride and a tour of the city, as part of the cruisetour.

On the third day, you'll board the Wilderness Express (a glass-domed railcar) for the ride to Denali. Then, you'll embark on the Tundra Wilderness Tour in search of the park's grizzly bears, moose, Dall sheep and other wildlife. Be sure to put your name on the list before bedtime to get a wake-up call for aurora activity. You'll also have one evening in Anchorage, where you can arrange for a northern lights tour, and one night in Seward before setting sail on Celebrity Summit the next morning. Highlights of the voyage include cruising Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage as well as stopping in Juneau, Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan. You'll disembark in Vancouver.

13-Day Denali Explorer – Pre-Cruise Cruisetour

Norwegian Cruise Line's six-day pre-cruise adventure begins with overnights in Fairbanks, Denali and Anchorage, where you'll have the best chances to view the northern lights. Other highlights for the first part of the trip include a deluxe dome car rail journey from Talkeetna to Anchorage on the Alaska Railroad and a private tour to an Iditarod sled dog musher's kennel. You'll also have plenty of time in Denali National Park to book a flightseeing tour, go whitewater rafting, or take a hike with a park ranger to look for bears, moose, Dall sheep, wolves and other local wildlife before starting your cruise in Seattle .

Norwegian Encore will call on Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay and Ketchikan (Ward Cove) in Alaska. The Mill at Ward Cove near Ketchikan is a newly built cruise ship port that serves as a jumping-off point for outdoor activities in the Tongass National Forest, from hiking and biking to kayaking and sea cycling. You can even pick up souvenirs, grab a bite to eat and sample a cold Alaska brew at the mill. The cruise itinerary also includes one day at sea and a stop in Victoria, British Columbia, before you disembark in Seattle.

7-Night Alaska: Dawes Glacier, Juneau & Ketchikan

Consider this seven-day cruise on Norwegian Bliss if you prefer to travel early in the spring and take your chances at catching the northern lights toward the end of aurora season, which falls around April 21. This round-trip itinerary from Seattle is one of the earliest sailings of the year to visit the Great Land and features two sea days, with one day of scenic cruising in Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier. You'll also visit Sitka, Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Ketchikan (Ward Cove) and Victoria before disembarking in Seattle.

Juneau will offer one of the best opportunities during the cruise for seeing the northern lights, although chances are dependent on the weather and solar activity. There are several apps and websites with real-time updates for aurora tracking, including My Aurora Forecast & Alerts. If the skies are clear in the evening and the forecast looks promising, ask guest relations if there's a sign-up sheet to get a call or a knock on the door in the event of aurora activity.

12 Night Mountain Panorama Adventure Cruisetour 5B (Pre Tour)

This 12-night cruisetour with Royal Caribbean International begins with an overnight in Anchorage before boarding the Wilderness Express, where you'll have a glass-domed rail car for the journey to Talkeetna. The quirky community of Talkeetna is said to be the inspiration for the fictional Alaska town of Cicely in the 1990s show "Northern Exposure." It's also an excellent base for chasing the aurora – especially at the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, where you'll be staying.

After an overnight at the lodge, your tour moves on to Denali, where you can search for wildlife by day and look for the aurora at night. Another evening on land at Hotel Alyeska in the remote town of Girdwood affords more opportunities to chase the finnicky lights before heading to Seward to board your ship, Radiance of the Seas .

Ports of call on this voyage include Juneau, Skagway, Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan. There are also two days of scenic cruising through Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage before disembarking in Vancouver. While there are plenty of activities, dining venues, bars and lounges on board to keep you entertained all night long, be sure to save up enough energy to wake up in the middle of the night should you get a call to see the magical natural wonder that is the northern lights.

Where to begin! This was absolutely the best trip of my life. I’ve been planning this trip since September of 2023. Guide to Iceland had so much helpful information about the country that assisted in knowing what to expect. If I had any questions they were quick in responding. I did encounter a couple hiccups which I feel was partially out of their control, however they were quick in fixing the situation. I unfortunately didn’t get to see the Northern Lights, nor was I able to do one thing on my journey the way they planned it and it being closed on the day they planned it on the itinerary. Just gives me a reason to come back, so I made peace with it. I’d recommend this and using them to assist in making your dream a reality.

I definitely recommend this tour, it was awesome. Everything was great thanks to our tour guide Mika. He is so knowledgeable and passionate about Iceland that he passed it on to us. He took us to more sites than were scheduled and that made the distances hardly felt. All the sites we visited were wonderful and we had plenty of time to enjoy them. I loved everything, but especially the ice cave and walking on the ice to get there. Being on the tour reminded me what an adventure life is... it was an unforgettable experience.

This tour with Tröll Expeditions was incredible. I was nervous at first as this was to be my first solo travel experience but the group I met up with and the incredible guide, Jóhann, made this the perfect trip! Tips would be make sure you have wind proof clothing, especially gloves, as the temperatures and precipitation is very doable without the wind cutting through you! Also, please be flexible with the itinerary and the guide. We ran into some severe weather which led to some detours and ultimately we didn't make it to all destinations on the list. With that in mind, our entire group felt the weather added to the "authenticity" of the experience and only made it more memorable! This tour was a great way to get a taste of some of the less crowded areas of the country and has me looking forward to my next trip back!

Ryan Ellis

Everything was perfect. From landing at the airport and being picked up by car rental company, every accommodation, and every tour, it was all taken care of and when I contacted customer service with questions they were quick to reply, I’ve traveled my fair share in my life but this was my first solo journey. I have to admit though, I’m not sure it’s fair to call it solo. Guid to Iceland was there every step of the way. I can’t wait to go back and see the north of the country. This tour took me through amazing sights, breathtaking landscapes and plenty of time to see the capitol as well. The accommodations, especially those guesthouses on people’s farm were amazing. The hosts were polite, welcoming and eager to answer questions. The food was incredible. The guides on the tours continued this, and were courteous and professional. I felt I was always in good hands. It was a trip of a lifetime, that I’ll always cherish. Thank you!!

What are the Northern Lights?

The northern lights, otherwise known as the Aurora Borealis, are phenomena that occur at high latitudes when solar particles ionise as they enter the earth's atmosphere, appearing in the night sky in the form of waving ribbons of colour. These ‘ribbons’ have captivated their viewers for centuries, bringing about defying awe and unspeakable mystery.

The northern lights are, in fact, occurring throughout the year, yet it is only during the dark winter nights that they become visible to the human eye. This is, naturally, what makes northern light hunting one of the most popular winter activities in Iceland. You can partake in numerous tours that take you to the best northern lights spotting locations, such as an affordable Northern Lights Bus Tour that takes you far away from the city's light-pollution, or a Northern Lights Boat Cruise that allows you to witness the auroras out on the open sea. Outside of Scandinavia, it is only possible to go northern light hunting in such places as Alaska, northern Canada and Siberia.

Modern scientific understanding of the northern lights did not mature until the 1880's when researchers discovered their connection to solar activity. Further study, seventy years later, would deepen this revelation, with new breakthroughs made in the knowledge that electrons and protons travel to earth on a ‘solar wind’. Today, research is ongoing into the northern lights as we further our understanding of deep space and our connection to it.

The northern lights have long been known to the Scandinavian people, inspiring some of the greatest and longstanding tales to have ever come out of Norse Mythology.

One of the most prominent of these relates to Ragnarök, a great future battle that, as foretold, will see the world submerged in water, and a significant number of the Gods dead, including the likes of Odin, Thor and Loki. After the events of Ragnarök, it is said that the world will be born anew, strengthening the ancient themes of birth, death and rebirth.

To prepare for this battle, Odin, the Chieftain of Asgard, would summon his most prized warriors, the Valkyries, female battle-maidens who rode on horseback carrying spears and shields. Ancient stories would surmise that the northern lights were a reflection of this Valkyrian armour.

Another widely spoken about interpretation is that the aurora was the ‘Bifrost Bridge’, a rainbow walkway that led deceased warriors into the glorious, glowing halls of Valhalla.

To the Icelandic Vikings, the aurora was a phenomenon to be celebrated, a popular trend that has continued to this day with countless Northern Lights tours taking place across the land of Ice and Fire. Neighbouring Scandinavians, however, were less than trustful.

Many Norse people, such as the indigenous Finno-Ugric people, the Sámi, felt that the lights were to be feared. Believing these dancing green, red and yellow light waves to be the souls of the dead, the Sámi were careful to never show any sign of disrespect towards the lights, be that whistling beneath them, singing, talking or even waving them to them.

It is said, that those who fail to heed these warnings will be pulled up into the sky, forever trapped among these nocturnal spirits. Due to this slumbering myth, it is thought that some Sámi people, even today, will not go outside when the northern lights dance above.

It is perhaps the Finnish who have the most beautiful allegory for the auroras, believing them to be created by the arctic fox, an animal that just so happens to be Iceland’s only native mammal. The Finnish name for the aurora translates to “Fire Fox”, a direct reference to the ethereal fox that would dash so quickly across the night sky that his tail would brush against the mountains, thus causing a vast and colourful outburst of sparks.

Still, another interpretation of the Arctic fox story differs somewhat, and provides some justification on the part of an ancient people as to why the lights only appeared in winter; instead of sparks, the fox’ tail was thought to have kicked up snowflakes into the air which then caught the light of the moon.

When it comes down to the folklore of Iceland particularly, it was believed that the northern lights helped to soothe the pain of childbirth, though women who had yet to give birth were warned not to look at them directly, in fear that the child would be born cross-eyed.

During your visit in Iceland, you have the option of seeing the northern lights on your own. But should you want to view them from the best spots, far away from the light-pollution of human settlements, you would be well advised to take a northern lights tour, in which a knowledgeable guide tells you all there is to know about this fantastic phenomenon.

If you want to take a multi-day tour but you are not sure about where to go, check out the best trips to see the Northern Lights in 2024.

1. Southern Iceland

Iceland is one of the most popular destinations for seeing the Northern Lights for many reasons:

  • You can get cheap flights from the US and Europe.
  • The country is  accessible,  with good roads, so you can just rent a car and do your own Aurora chasing trip.
  • Even though Iceland is not above the Arctic Circle, there are very  high chances of seeing the Aurora .
  • It’s one of the countries with fewer entry restrictions during the pandemic , which makes it an ideal destination regardless of where you’re traveling from.

Best countries to see Northern Lights

In terms of locations, anywhere on the island away from light pollution is a good place for seeing the Aurora . However, I’ve been traveling there for many years to photograph the Northern Lights and, to me,  the best places to see the Aurora Borealis are in the South:

  • Skógafoss (South):  A huge waterfall from which you can see the Aurora.
  • Jökulsárlón (Southeast):  The renowned glacier lagoon is also an otherworldly place to see the Aurora.
  • Stokksnes (SouthEast):  This black sand beach is my favorite location to photograph the Aurora.
  • Reykjanesviti (SouthWest):  The best place to see the Northern Lights near Reykjavik.

Some other areas outside Southern Iceland that you can easily access are:

  • Kirkjufell (West):  The most iconic mountain in Iceland is also an excellent place to see the lights on the Snæfellness peninsula.
  • Hvítserkur (NorthWest):  Also known as “The Rhino,”  this rock formation is the best place to see the Aurora in northern Iceland.

If you’re a photographer and your goal is to capture the Aurora, you can join us on our Capture the Atlas Iceland Photo Tour that takes place every September.

There are many Northern Lights hotels in Iceland . My favorite is the Hotel Rangá , a real sky observatory hotel to see the Northern Lights from a rooftop.

2. Whitehorse, Canada’s Yukon

Canada is the best place to see the Northern Lights in America.

Best places to see Northern Lights in Canada

Northern Canada is a vast territory, with a majority of remote and difficult to reach locations, but there are some accessible places to see the Northern Lights in Canada :

  • Yukon: Whitehorse is the official capital of the Northern Lights in Canada, with a very high percentage of Northern Lights nights per year. Most people who travel to Canada with this goal in mind, decide Whitehorse as their Northern Lights destination for good reason; plenty of lodging options, easy transportation, Aurora Tours from the city , etc.
  • Northwest Territories: The best area in the NWT is Yellowknife. Along with Whitehorse, it is probably the most accessible place to see the Aurora Borealis in Canada .
  • Manitoba: Churchill offers a great opportunity for seeing Northern Lights shows and polar bears if you plan your trip during October-November.
  • Canadian Rockies: The Rockies are located at a lower latitude, and Northern Lights displays are rare, but you can see the Lights during strong shows. This was the place where I saw the Northern Lights for the first time.

Best places for Northern Lights in Canada

If you visit Whitehorse, you can take this Northern Lights evening viewing tour .

There are many hotels in the best areas to see the Aurora Borealis in Canada .

3. Tromso, Norway

Tromso is, without a doubt, one of the top places to see the Northern Lights on the European continent . There’s also a wide option of cheap flights, tours, and hotels to enjoy this natural phenomenon.

Besides Tromso, there are many accessible areas in Norway located at a perfect latitude to see the “Green Lady” almost every clear night. Some of the strongest displays I’ve seen in my life have been under the Norwegian sky, making it one of my favorite countries to see the Northern Lights.

Where to see strong Northern Lights in Norway

The best places to see the Northern Lights in Norway are:

  • Tromso: The most renowned location to see the Northern Lights in Norway. Aurora tourism is everywhere, and there’s a great offer of Northern Lights tours in Tromso.
  • Lofoten Islands: The best place to see the Northern Lights in Norway if you’re a photographer.
  • Senja: Not far from Lofoten, you’ll find the magical island of Senja, famous for its rugged peaks and fjords.
  • Alta: If you travel to northern Norway, Alta is also a very good option to consider for seeing the Northern Lights.
  • Svalbard: Apart from polar bear watching, the northernmost city of Norway offers an excellent opportunity for Aurora shows.

Best places to photograph Northern Lights in Norway

Where to see the Aurora Borealis in Norway

If you’d like to join a group tour, we have handpicked the best Tromso Northern Lights tours , and this Aurora tour from the Lofoten Islands .

If you’re a photography enthusiast, we also run a Capture the Atlas Lofoten Photo tour every winter, which is aimed at shooting landscapes and the Aurora on the Lofoten Islands.

Norway probably has the largest offer of Northern Lights hotels in the world.

The options are endless depending on your location, budget, and preferences. My favorite lodging option is the Eliassen Rorbuer cabins on the Lofoten Islands; it’s impossible to forget the night we spent watching the Aurora from our fisherman-hotel cabin.

4. Fairbanks, Alaska

Fairbanks, Alaska, is the  best place to see the Northern Lights in the United States . That doesn’t mean that you can’t see the Northern Lights in other US states or areas in Alaska, but this is the accessible city with the  highest chances of seeing the Aurora.

If you’re flexible with your dates, plan your trip to see the Northern Lights in Fairbanks in March since it’s the best time to enjoy clear skies and big Northern Lights shows in the Aurora capital of Alaska.

Best places to see Northern Lights in USA

During strong displays, the Northern Lights can occasionally be seen further south in the northern states, such as Washington, Montana, Minnesota, Michigan, or Maine. If you want to photograph the Aurora in the lower 48, I recommend checking our article on seeing the Northern Lights in Michigan .

However, since Alaska is the “ go-to” option, here are the  best places to see the Northern Lights  there:

  • Fairbanks: It’s the largest inland city and the northernmost most accessible place for seeing the Aurora in Alaska. If you’re there during the winter and there are clear skies, go outside, since you’ll be very likely to see the Lights dancing.
  • Anchorage: It’s the largest city in Alaska in terms of population and one of the locations that offers the most options for  seeing the Aurora in the USA . There are many commercial flights, and it’s the easiest place to plan your  Northern Lights trip to Alaska.
  • Denali: The most famous national park in Alaska is one of the best places for seeing the Aurora away from the light pollution of the cities. You’ll also have plenty of activities to do during the day, depending on the time of the year.

Best places to see Northern Lights in Alaska

Northern Lights at Fairbanks

Alaska is also a very popular destination for Northern Lights Tours , like this Northern Lights and arctic circle tour in Fairbanks or this 6-hour dinner and Northern Lights tour .

The best Northern Lights hotels in Alaska are around Anchorage and Fairbanks. One of the most interesting options is the Summit View Suit in Fairbanks or the Alyeska Resort not far from Anchorage.

5. Rovaniemi, Finland

Finland is, along with Norway, the most popular destination for seeing the Northern Lights in Europe . One of the best places to see the lights here is in the Finnish Lapland , especially in Rovaniemi .

This city offers a wide range of Northern Lights and winter activities and some of the best Northern Lights hotels in the world .

The chances of  seeing the Northern Lights in Finland  change drastically from the south to the north of the country. To increase your chances, the further north you go, the more likely you’ll be to see the green Lights.

Best places to see Northern Lights in Finland

These would be the  best places to see the Northern Lights in Finland :

  • Rovaniemi: The capital of Finnish Lapland is famous for being the official residence of Santa Claus but also for its frequent displays of Northern Lights.
  • Kakslauttanen: Further north and away from light pollution, Kakslauttanen is the best bet for those who want to enjoy the magic of the Northern Lights from a transparent Igloo hotel .
  • Ivalo: In the northernmost Finnish region of Inari, the small village of Ivalo offers the opportunity to see the Aurora almost every single night as long as there are clear skies. It’s colder than the other places to see the Aurora in Finland, but your chances will be higher.
  • Saariselkä: Further north, you can immerse yourself in the Finnish wilderness in this mountain village, where it’s rare not to see the Aurora if there are clear skies.

There are plenty of Tours to see the Aurora in Finland, like snowmobile Aurora chasing tours , Sleigh Northern Lights tours, or experiences to see the “green lady” in the wilderness .

The most famous Aurora igloo-hotel in the world is located in Finland, and it’s called Kakslauttanen arctic resort .

Best place to go to an Aurora igloo hotel

Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort

The Northern Lights Village , in Saariselkä, is also one of the best Northern Lights hotels in Finland. It’s a resort specifically aimed at seeing the Northern Lights and it also offers other winter activities.

  • Auroras now:  Aurora forecast in Finland.
  • SÄÄ:  Cloud cover forecast.

6. Kiruna, Sweden

The Swedish Arctic region is also a very accessible and relatively easy place to see the Northern Lights . Kiruna is the most popular place to see the Aurora in Sweden since it’s very accessible and offers plenty of accommodations and tours.

A good thing about the Swedish Lapland is that it’s affected by the Gulf Stream climate, and temperatures aren’t as cold as in Alaska or Canada.

Best places to see Northern Lights in Sweeden

The northern territory of the country offers the best places for seeing the Northern Lights :

  • Kiruna: It’s the biggest northernmost city in Swedish Lapland, and there are plenty of services and lodging options. From there, you can take a tour into the wilderness to enjoy the Lights.
  • Jokkmokk: This area with a small population is one of the most renowned places for chasing the Aurora. There are many lakes nearby, which are great to see the Northern Lights reflected in the water or the snow.
  • Abisko: This small village right at the entrance of Abisko National Park is one of the best places to see the Aurora surrounded by nature in Sweden.

This Northern Lights tour is probably your best bet for seeing the Lights in Sweeden. They’ll take you to the best areas near Kiruna and show you how to take the best pictures of the Aurora.

The  Pinetree lodge , in Kangos, is one of the best hotels to see the Northern Lights in Sweden from the boreal forest and to enjoy the local food from Swedish Lapland.

Another two interesting options in Abisko are the Abisko Hostel and the Abisko Guesthouse & Activities .

7. Murmansk, Russia

Russia is the largest country in the world, and a great portion of its territory is located above the Arctic Circle.

Most Russian land is indeed remote and extremely cold, but some areas like Murmansk, in the Kola peninsula , are more accessible and offer  high chances for seeing the Aurora in Russia.

Where can I go to see Northern Lights in Russia

The most accessible and  best destinations for seeing the Northern Lights in Russia are spread towards the northwest of the country, specifically around the  Kola Peninsula .

These are the best areas to see the Northern Lights in Russia :

  • Murmansk: It’s the biggest port city in the Russian Arctic and the  best place for seeing the Aurora in Russia . Nearby, you’ll have the perfect landscape, with ice forests and the impressive coast across the Barent Sea.
  • Teriberka: Not far from Murmansk but away from the light pollution of the city, Teriberka is a small fishing village renowned for its great chances of seeing the Northern Lights.
  • Arkhangelsk: Taking a 2-hour flight from Moscow, you can get to this northern city in Russia to enjoy the Northern Lights. It’s one of the most popular Aurora destinations in the country.

This Russian Northern Lights company offers Aurora and photography tours in the Murmansk area.

The Park inn by Radisson and the Tundra Hotel are the best accommodations for seeing the Aurora in Murmansk.

8. Ilulissat, Greenland

Greenland is another vast and remote area, but it lies entirely across the Auroral Oval, and there are some settlements located around spectacular landscapes to see the Aurora.

Best places to see Northern Lights Greenland

Most of the territory in Greenland is completely inaccessible, but there are some tourist-friendly areas around the coast.

These are the best places to see the Northern Lights in Greenland:

  • Ilulissat: The Ilulissat ice fjord is one of the most mesmerizing places to see the Aurora in the world. The UNESCO world heritage Disko bay is there, where you can see the Aurora reflected in the big icebergs on the sea.
  • Nuuk: Further south, Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, is one of the best locations to see the Aurora in Greenland. This city is surrounded by fjords, rugged peaks, and mountains, a perfect landscape to see the Northern Lights.

This Icebergs and Northern Lights tour in Ilulissat is a perfect option to enjoy the Greenland landscapes and the Aurora.

9. Dunedin, New Zealand

If you are trying to chase the Southern counterpart of the Northern Lights, the Aurora Australis , the place to see it is in New Zealand .

The city of Dunedin is the best place to see the Aurora in New Zealand ; it’s at a very high southern latitude, accessible, and offers some spectacular landscapes to chase the lights like Moeraki.

Bear in mind that these places require considerable solar activity to see the aurora, so don’t set high expectations and make sure that you check the Northern Lights forecast every day.

10. Tasmania, Australia

Another great place to see the Aurora Australis is the island of  Tasmania, in Australia .

Tasmania is the most southern state in Australia and apart from beautiful coastlines, World Heritage rainforests, and national parks to photograph, you also have the opportunity of being able to witness the most intense auroras in the country because of the high latitude.

The same as with New Zealand, you need intense solar activity to see the lights from here, so it might be a great destination for the “solar maximum years” when the activity of the sun is higher.

where are the best places to see the Northern Lights

Apart from the best places to see the Northern Lights that we’ve discussed, there are other great places to enjoy this majestic phenomenon.

The  Northern Lights are seen at latitudes near the North Pole,  in what is called the  “Auroral Oval”; the place with the highest chances of seeing the Aurora Borealis is the Arctic Circle and the surrounding areas.

Best places to see the Northern Lights in the world

The green circle (Auroral zone) determines the best places to see the Northern Lights while the purple circle (Subauroral region), some good places to see them when the solar activity is high.

If you understand the main cause of the Northern Lights, you will know that the solar particles that form them travel to the poles, and therefore, the places that are in high latitudes, such as Scandinavia, northern Canada, Alaska, etc. are the best places to see the Northern Lights.

Keep in mind that the Northern Lights are not the same as the Southern Lights. The Southern Lights, also known as  Aurora Australis, are seen in latitudes near the South Pole , such as Antarctica or southern New Zealand.

However, if there is a  strong solar storm , Auroras can be seen in latitudes farther from the poles, such as the northern states of the US or England.

To increase your chances of seeing the Aurora, my advice is to plan your trip to a  Northern Lights destination , like the ones you will see below, during the best time to see Northern Lights.

Once you decide on your destination, you can also check lodging options in any of the best Northern Lights hotels in the world .

where can I see the northern lights tonight?

Once you make it to one of  the best Northern Lights destinations , your most common question might be  where to go to see the Northern Lights .

The best places to increase your chances of seeing the Northern Lights are always those with clear skies.

I suggest checking the weather and cloud forecast in your location , either using a local weather site or a general site like Windy.com .

Once you’re in a dark place with no clouds, you only need to wait and be patient; the Northern Lights are unpredictable, and they can start shining at any time!

10 Best places to see the Northern Lights

Northern Lights in the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, Iceland.

As you can see, the  best places to see the Northern Lights  are located across the Auroral Oval circle.

Even though most of the areas in the Arctic Circle are very remote, there are great  locations where you can go to see the Northern Lights .

Before your trip, make sure that you take warm clothes, you have an Aurora forecast app , and you’re ready to enjoy one of the most spectacular natural shows on earth!

P.S. If you are a photographer and you want to experience an exciting adventure chasing and photographing the Aurora Borealis, don’t hesitate to sign up for our Iceland Photo tour or our Lofoten Islands Photo tour !

Do the northern lights look different in different locations. For instance the photos i’m seeing in Finland are more green/blue/defined and in alaska more stop light green / less defined?

' src=

Hi Cynthia! No, northern lights can look the same in different locations. The colors mainly depend on the atmospheric composition and the altitude. Oxygen molecules typically produce green and red colors, while nitrogen molecules produce blue and purple colors. Also, lower-altitude auroras tend to be predominantly green, while higher-altitude auroras can display reds, blues, and purples. But colors will also depend on the solar activity, latitude and the magnetic field.

Would you advise timing of Norway trip or cruise? We would have an overnight in Tromso as well as Alta in mid March and a day in Narvik. I think this is around the time of the equinox. Our other option is late February.

Hi Margaret, Late February or mid-March is a great time to see the Northern Lights in Norway . Tromso and Alta offer plenty of opportunities to spot the aurora! 🙂

We are planning to do family trip in Jan 2024 for northern lights, which place to recommend to be the best to visit. Would really apprecite your guidance.

Great article, hello. Labrador, perhaps? Is there a location where you can easily observe the lights?

Hey there, Yes, you can see the Northern Lights in Labrador. However, it’s very remote and not easily accessible, so I recommend going with one of the other options in our guide.

' src=

how about in New Zealand, which place is the best to view the Aurora Australis and what months of the year. I know they are the opposite season because I lived in Sydney for quite a while.

New Zealand is great both for Milky Way and Southern Lights! Southern Island of NZ offers the best chances from March to November 😉

' src=

Is there a cruise to see the lights that you can recommend?

Hi Deb, A friend of mine took this cruise last year, and she said it was an experience of a lifetime!

' src=

I want to do a trip in March of 2023 to see the Northern Lights. Im in the USA. Do you recommend Alaska at that time of year or would I have better luck in Iceland in March?

Both places are great and you have very similar chances. I, personally, prefer Iceland because the landscapes are outstanding, but both places are great to see the Northern Lights,

' src=

What is your opinion about the best option of seeing the lights in late December?

Hi LaRee, there is no a better option than other, but in December you will have a great chance of seeing the Northern Lights in Tromso.

Another great option is to see the Northern Lights in Fairbanks, Alaska.

All the chances of seeing the northern lights in November 20 22 in upper Michigan or Wisconsin

Who knows! It’s possible, but you need a very strong solar storm and clear skies. You won’t know for sure until the same day.

I’m planning Iceland in February 2023. Weather forecast, moon phases all research done. Looks more of rain, but do you still suggest I can go ahead. I’m travelling from India. And it’s my birthday month. I really want to execute this plan. Please advise

It’s impossible to predict the weather so far in advance; even within the same day, the forecast can change in Iceland. February is a good time to see the Aurora there.

' src=

Is it worthwhile to go to Greenland to see the Aurora this winter and what would be the best month?

Of course! I’d go to Greenland in September since it’s easy to move around and there are great chances to see the Aurora. If you can’t the first 2-3 weeks of March would be my choice since the solar activity is usually higher around the equinoxes.

' src=

Where/ which country would be best to see Northern Lights in November 2 week this year? any suggestions .. thanks in advance.

It depends on where you are…if you are in Europe I’d go for Tromso, Norway. If you are in the Americas, Yellowknife or Whitehorse are great options!

' src=

Hi, great article. How about labrador? Is there an accessible place to see the lights?

You can see the Northern Lights in Labrador, but it isn’t that accessible or north to make it worthy. I would choose any other place on the list.

' src=

Hi!! Will it be possible to see the northern lights from Maine this year(2022)? Please let me know! Thanks :^)

Hi! Seeing the Northern Lights in Maine will require high solar activity and the current solar cycle is getting more active. I’d definitely keep an eye on the Aurora forecast! 😉

Absolutely amazing! This wasn’t a tour, it was an unforgettable experience. Our guides were knowledgeable, patient, and entirely invested in making our week everything we hoped it would be—and more! The sights seen, education gained, and most of all the connections and friendships made combined to create the trip of a lifetime for me and my son. Thank you Gondwana!

trip northern lights

I traveled beyond the Arctic Circle to see the Northern Lights. Here are 4 things to know before you go.

  • I traveled north of the Arctic Circle to a tiny village in Finland for a chance to see the northern lights.
  • I booked a tour as far north as I could afford for the best chance of seeing the colorful auroras.
  • The location made viewing the northern lights easier, but they were different than I expected.

In February, I finally checked off one of my top bucket list items — seeing the aurora borealis, better known as the northern lights.

The auroras occur when charged solar particles from the sun interact with the Earth's upper atmosphere, resulting in an array of colorful lights beaming from the planet's poles. They occur year-round but can only be seen in winter months during the long polar nights.

I journeyed all the way to Finland's northernmost municipality, Utsjoki, about 280 miles north of the Arctic Circle. The trek required two plane rides from New York to Ivalo, Finland, via Helsinki, plus a two-hour drive deep into the snow-covered Lapland.

The secluded village is home to Aurora Holidays , the tour company I used for my trip. I paid about $2,000 total, which included guides, full room and board, a village tour, reindeer feeding, a king crab fishing trip in Norway, and dog sledding — though prices have increased since I booked. Flights on Finnair were another $1,000.

Aurora Holidays boasts a 100% success rate over five years of seeing the auroras thanks to a lack of light pollution in the northern location — and, fortunately, the streak continued on my trip.

Here are four things to know when planning a trip to see the aurora lights and why I recommend getting as far north as possible to maximize your chances — even if it means facing bone-chilling temperatures and relying on a little bit of luck.

Location, location, location

While recent environmental phenomena have made the northern lights visible in places as far south as England and Denmark, the aurora borealis are best viewed within the Article Circle.

The far north is hard to reach, though, and popular viewing spots like Fairbanks, Alaska, Tromsø, Norway, and Canada's Northwest Territories sit below the 66° 34' N latitude that defines the region.

Plus, these often-crowded tourist destinations have light pollution that requires people to venture out of the city into darker areas to see the lights.

Utsjoki, however, is so remote that it offers complete darkness during the long polar nights. Even better, my accommodation was perfectly situated facing north across Lapland — meaning I could see the auroras from my cabin porch.

"A lot of people don't know that for the highest possibilities to see the lights, location matters," Aurora Holiday's owner, Tiina Salonen, told me during the tour. "The rule of thumb is that the further north you travel, the less [solar] activity you need to have lights in the sky."

Other places within the Arctic Circle, like Abisko National Park in Sweden or Ilulissat, Greenland, are also good viewing spots.

Pack for below-zero temperatures

During my trip, the temperature reached -8°F, which is even colder than what I experienced in Antarctica . Fortunately, my previous polar expedition taught me how to pack.

I opted for a merino wool base layer from REI, which I prefer due to its moisture-wicking abilities . I also wore a fleece pullover and a Kathmandu puffer as my mid-layers and a 600-fill jacket as my shell. I also wore snow pants, ski gloves, wool socks, a fleece buff, a beanie, and hiking boots.

All of that combined, I was easily warm enough to stand outside under the lights. I also recommend bringing hand and foot warmers if you plan to do other winter activities like snowshoeing or snowmobiling.

One thing to remember about going to extremely remote places like northern Lapland is how far you are away from a proper hospital — the closest to Utsjoki being a few hour's drive, according to Tiina. Wearing the right clothes to prevent frost bite or illness is important, but it wouldn't hurt to get travel insurance , too — just in case.

The vibrant colors that appear in photos are not what humans see

Not every color of the northern auroras is visible to the naked eye. During my trip, I could clearly see streaks of green and white, but the intensity and array of colors were more vivid in photos taken on my iPhone.

Tiina explained this is because cameras can take in more light than a human's nighttime vision can, therefore allowing it to capture otherwise invisible colors, like pink, red, and purple.

I'll admit that the auroras were much fainter than I expected, but that didn't take away from the beauty. Nevertheless, some people may be disappointed it isn't the extravagant Disney-like display social media sometimes makes it seem.

Seeing the lights takes a little bit of luck

During my six-day, five-night tour in Utsjoki, we only saw the auroras once — which is the reality of lights chasing, and why I booked a longer vacation to better my odds of seeing them.

That night was perfectly clear, and the solar activity was relatively strong, allowing the beautiful green beams to dance across the sky. The other nights, however, were too cloudy to see anything.

"The lights are there, but if it is super cloudy — we can't, of course, see them," Tiina told me. I noticed this when I was further south in Ivalo before and after the tour in Utsjoki. I couldn't see the auroras either night I was there due to the clouds, even though the online tracker said they were out.

Sometimes tour companies like Tiina's can drive around to find pockets where the auroras are visible, but it's not always possible — which makes seeing the lights a roll of the dice and why I now warn people to manage their expectations before booking a trip.

"Even here in Utsjoki, we cannot guarantee the lights — after all, it is a natural phenomenon, and Mother Nature is in charge," Tiina said.

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Dates & Prices

Russian winter turns cities a dazzlingly photogenic white, and reveal the true beauty of the Kola Peninsula, whose Arctic skies are often graced with the mythical Aurora Borealis.

Russian winters are harsh yet extraordinarily beautiful, and it’s the lands above the Arctic Circle where winter's transformational effects are most keenly felt. The Kola Peninsula is home to people and animals who not only survive but thrive despite the chilling temperatures. Ending in the 'capital' of the Arctic Circle, Murmansk, this Northern Lights tour shows you two sides to life in the Russian Winter, from the grandiose cities of Moscow and St Petersburg to the polar landscapes of the remote Kola Peninsula.

Northern Lights in Russia tour highlights:

  • Moscow City Tour: Begin your journey in Russia’s mighty capital discovering Moscow's highlights. Start with a guided exploration of the Kremlin in its finest winter decorations, before heading underground to discover the famous Moscow Metro system and its lavishly decorated subterranean stations
  • Armed with the knowledge of an expert guide, uncover some of the most esteemed treasures among the 3 million works of art in St Petersburg’s State Hermitage Museum
  • Hovercraft Ride: Visit the small rural settlement of Kizhi Island, today an enchanting open-air museum with over 80 original wooden structures from the 14th to 17th  centuries. In the middle of Lake Obega, Kizhi is only accessible in winter via a hovercraft able to navigate the icy, aquatic terrain
  • Polar Nights and Astral Lights: Crossing into the Kola Peninsula, you'll spend four nights above the Polar Circle where the chance to experience the Northern Lights in all their splendour is a tantalising prospect each evening
  • Visit one of the Kola Peninsula’s largest indigenous Saami settlements. Learn about their ancient  culture, customs and cuisines and try your hand at essential Saami skills like reindeer lassoing and husky sledding

On this trip to see the northern lights in Russia, we begin in Moscow, where the city’s monuments, parks and churches are transformed into a scene from a winter fairy tale, all icing sugar snow and shimmering lights. Next, we head north to Saint Petersburg, where you can enjoy world-class attractions like the Hermitage at a leisurely pace, free of the tourist crowds typical of the summer months.

Forging closer to Arctic Circle, we’ll stop to admire the Ruskeala Mountain Park, spending a day absorbing the park's natural beauty, including shimmering waterfalls and the amazing, 100m deep Marble Canyon. During winter evenings, the canyon is illuminated by a dream-like display of multi-coloured lights. Next, we'll navigate the icy waters of Lake Onega on a day trip to historic Kizhi Island.

Finally, we’ll cross into the Polar North, arriving in the Kola Peninsula by train. Discover the customs of the indigenous Saami and traverse their snowy lands in sleds pulled by huskies and reindeer. Finally, we reach Murmansk, the largest city in the Kola Peninsula. While there’s the possibility to observe Aurora Borealis throughout our time in the Kola, Murmansk and the surrounding area is regarded as one of the best places in the world to experience the psychedelic light display in all its awe-inspiring glory.

This tour perfectly encapsulates the charm, allure and beauty of both urban and rural Russia in winter. From the cities to the mountains to the Arctic Circle, you'll witness magical sights and scenes that can only be experienced in the season of ice, snow and amazing astral projections that light up the darkest winter nights in unforgettable fashion.

Day 1 welcome to moscow.

Arrive in Moscow and transfer to your centrally located hotel. Get your first taste of life in the Russian metropolis, exploring the city at your leisure.

Day 2 Moscow: Red Square, Kremlin and Armoury Chamber

Our first acquaintance with Moscow starts with a walking tour of the historical city centre. Almost every building in the historical centre of Moscow is associated with different events and celebrated personalities of Russian history and culture.

You will see and hear the stories of the most popular places in the city: Red Square , the hub of Russia, with its fantastic "stone flower"- St. Basil Cathedral , one of the symbols of Moscow; fancy Manezhnaya Square with the Zero Kilometer, a starting point for all Moscow roads;  Alexander’s Garden  with the eternal flame, a WW2 memorial, where you might watch a change of guards. These are places that make Moscow one of the most beautiful cities in Russia.

Have a delicious lunch in one of the multiple downtown cafes or restaurants and continue the day with a tour of the  Kremlin grounds and Armoury Chamber . The Kremlin used to be a fortress then the residence of the Russian Tsars.

After the Revolution of 1917, the USSR Government moved in it. Now it is the seat of the Russian President and a unique cultural museum complex that consists of palaces, cathedrals and museums.

You will tour the grounds of the Kremlin and visit its strikingly beautiful cathedrals full of ancient frescoes and icons, such as Assumption Cathedral  where Russian tsars and emperors were crowned; Archangel Cathedral  - the burial vault of the Russian tsars until 18th centuries; and  Annunciation Cathedral , a home church for the royalty.

You will get to meet the 2 prominent Russian tsars in person:  the Tsar Bell and the Tsar Cannon , the biggest in the world. Kremlin will surely reveal you some mysteries of the Russian state and soul.

While touring the Kremlin you will also visit Armoury Chamber, famous for the Tsar's regalia such as jewellery crowns, orbs and sceptres, clothing of the Russian tsars and tsarinas, royal carriages, collection of arms and armour, gifts to the Russian Tsars from various countries of the West and the East, and the illustrious collection of Faberge Easter eggs.

Take your time to relax as we prepare something special as an option* for this evening. Head out for an unforgettable night at the opera or the Russian ballet at the iconic Bolshoi Theatre.

Day 3 Moscow: Panoramic tour, Metro and Tretyakov Gallery

Today, we explore Moscow further on a car tour of the city, giving you a sense of the city’s sheer size, and an impression of how Moscow has changed throughout the ages. Visit the starkly contrasting Theatre Square to see the stunning Bolshoi Theatre. Stroll along Tverskaya Street , the city’s main boulevard and home to the landmark Yeleseyevskiy Grocery Store , a former palace turned luxury providore.

We’ll also explore Boulevard Ring, where Russian nobles built their exquisite 18th and 19th-century mansions, and Kutuzoyskiy Avenue with its Triumphal Arch . Pass by the legendary Gorky Park and the White House before a stop at the architecturally stunning Novodevichy Convent , and the observation platform at Sparrow Hills , for a bird’s eye view over this staggering megalopolis.

Next, we visit the 19th century Tretyakov State Gallery , the world’s foremost depository of Russian fine art, containing over 130,000 exhibits, with work by Rublev, Kandinsky, Repin, and many others.

***The tour of Tretyakov Gallery can be changed to a tour of Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts upon request.

We will also explore the Moscow Metro . Opened in 1935, this striking feat of engineering is one of the largest and oldest underground railway systems in the world. Its grand stations are remarkably beautiful and have become tourist attractions in their own right.

Day 4 St Petersburg city tour

In the morning, after breakfast at your hotel, you will be transferred to the train station, where you board a fast train Sapsan , which will take you for a 4h journey to your next destination St Petersburg – also known as the cultural capital of Russia. On arrival to St Petersburg, you will be met by a driver and transferred to your centrally located hotel.

Your second half of the day starts with meeting your professional and friendly St. Petersburg guide in the lobby of your hotel to enjoy a walking city tour of St. Petersburg with picturesque stops in most popular places and by most spectacular sights.

At this time of year, the city is at its most beautiful. The streets are relaxed and uncrowded, the iconic Neva River becomes a wilderness of ice, and the city’s gilded monuments glow against a backdrop of the winter sky and bare trees covered in crystalline frost.

Stroll along the Nevsky Prospect - the main street of St. Petersburg, cross the Anichkov Bridge and admire the Anichkov Palace. Walk along the banks of Fontanka and Moika Rivers, stop at the Kazan Cathedral and St Isaac's Cathedral , visit the Palace Square and Senate Square with the Bronze Horseman monument to Peter the Great, walk inside of the Church on the Spilled Blood and be amazed by its architecture.

During the tour, you will also visit the Peter and Paul Fortress and its Cathedral - a burial place of Russian emperors from Peter the Great to Nicholas II and his family.

As an option* for this evening, we invite you to enjoy the traditional Russian dance performance in Nikolaevsky Palace.

Day 5 St Petersburg: day trip to Pushkin and Pavlovsk

Experience the extravagance of the Imperial rulers on an excursion to the suburban estates of the Romanov Tsars. Tsarskoe Selo ( Tsar’s village ) is now part of the nearby town of Pushkin and is one of Saint Petersburg’s finest attractions. Amid exquisite parks and gardens, you’ll find the baroque Catherine Palace , a dazzling testament to Catherine’s love of luxury and royal excess.

Envision Catherine strolling with her beloved dogs through acres of private gardens, where remarkable structures like the Marble Bridge, the Dutch Admiralty and the Creaking Pagoda were constructed for her amusement. We also explore the stately neoclassical Alexander Palace, whose tumultuous history paints a fascinating portrait of the Romanov family and the replica of the world-renowned Amber Room .

You will also visit Pavlovsk Palace and Park , the summer palace of Emperor Paul I, commissioned by his mother Catherine the Great. The palace borders with a park of 600 hectares in area, which is one of the largest landscape parks in Europe.

If there’s one must-do in St Petersburg in winter, it’s a traditional troika ride! Perhaps the quintessential image of the Russian winter, a troika is a sled-like carriage drawn by three horses harnessed side-by-side. Be swept up in the magical winter scenery, passing beautiful wooded areas and meandering streams.

As an option* for this evening, we invite you to experience:

An evening of Russian classical music at one of St. Petersburg’s beautiful palaces. Take a seat in the magnificent Hall of the Palace, then, lose yourself in much-loved works by Russian composers such as Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich and others, played by one of the world-class orchestras of St Petersburg. Before the raising of the curtains, enjoy an interesting pre-concert tour of the palace's halls and a glass of sparkling wine.

Day 6 St Petersburg: The State Hermitage Museum

On our last day in St Petersburg, we pay a visit to its most lauded attraction. The State Hermitage Museum houses some 3 million masterpieces, spread across six magnificent historic buildings, including the splendid Winter Palace . Here you’ll feast your eyes on Rembrandts, Leonardos and Michelangelos, and get an up-close look at some of the world’s most important archaeological finds.

After lunch at a café in the Hermitage, you can seek to discover more of the museum at your own pace or head elsewhere.

As an option* for today, enjoy a tour (audio-guide) of the recently opened Faberge Museum , a private collection of over 4,000 Faberge Eggs and other bejewelled objects of desire, elegantly displayed inside the stunning Shuvalov Palace.

In the evening, we transfer from to the Ladozhsky railway station for the train bound to Petrozavodsk – the capital of Karelia, a scenic mid-sized town built along a bay on vast Lake Onega.

Day 7 Karelia: Ruskeala Park and Kinerma village

Your local guide will meet you at the Petrozavodsk train station, for a tasty hot breakfast at one of the city cafes. After a short tour of Petrozavodsk , you will embark on a scenic, several-hour-journey to the Ruskeala Mountain Park . Unique for its waterfalls and varicoloured marble quarries, the quarry pits were once mined to provide building material for the royal palaces.

The park is now protected and one of the most spectacular natural sites in the Karelia region. Its most famous attraction is the 100m high, 450m wide Marble Canyon, which is filled with crystal clear water from underground springs. In winter, the canyon is illuminated with multi-coloured lights – a truly unforgettable scene.

The return journey will take us back to Petrozavodsk. En route, we will stop at Kinerma village , which in 2016 was named the most beautiful village in Russia. We’ll be met by a local resident for a personalised tour around the village, made up of late 19th century houses and a wooden chapel to the Virgin Mary erected in the 17th century. Afterwards, we’ll be invited to dinner in a traditional Karelian house.

Closer to evening, you will be transferred back to your hotel in Petrozavodsk.

Day 8 Karelia: Kizhi Island

Today we visit the Kizhi Island in the centre of Lake Onega. Getting here in winter requires a ride on a hovercraft. Only a small rural settlement remains on Kizhi, and the island has become an open-air museum with over 80 historical wooden structures, some dating to the 14th century.

After returning to Petrozavodsk, it’s time to get ready for our overnight train, which will take us above the Arctic Circle.

Day 9 Kola Peninsula: Murmansk city tour

We have now crossed the northern polar circle and at arrived in Murmansk, the northernmost city in Russia, with a population of around 300,000 people, by far the largest city above the Arctic Circle. An important Russian naval base, Murmansk served as a port for the Arctic convoys during WWII.

After hotel check-in and lunch, we embark on the Murmansk city sightseeing trip, and a tour of the world’s first nuclear icebreaker ship, Lenin .

Spend your free evening discovering the surprisingly vibrant nightlife in this quirky Russian outpost. With any luck, the Northern Lights will make an appearance, we will go hunt this beautiful phenomenon.

Day 10 Kola Peninsula: Saami village and husky dog sledding

Head to one of the largest Saami settlements in the Kola Peninsula, where many traditional dwellings are still in use. The settlement was built around important grazing land for the Saami’s precious reindeers, who are surprisingly affectionate and enjoy being stroked and fed by visitors. Also look out for wildlife in the surrounding countryside, including polar foxes, hares and hunting birds.

You’ll get the chance to learn about the ancient Saami culture and be invited to play traditional games, test your lasso throwing skills and reindeer sledding abilities, and maybe even try on some traditional Saami clothing. The locals will put on an authentic lunch spread including fish soup, berry pie and herbal tea, after which you’ll be given the opportunity to purchase handicrafts.

After lunch, we head to a Siberian husky farm . Here, you’ll learn the wonderful story behind the evolution of this iconic northern breed, and spend time getting to know the charming resident dogs here as well as their reindeer stablemates. Take an exhilarating sled ride through the starkly beautiful winter forests with the Husky team.

In the evening, we get back into the hotel where we’ll spend the remainder of the evening.

Day 11 Kola Peninsula: Snow village and snowmobiling at Khibiny Mountains

We start our day with the chance to carve it up on a snowmobile safari in the Khibiny Mountains , making our way down the valleys for a sensational view of the mountain ranges. This experience doesn’t require any special skills or physical abilities. After a safety brief, you will truly feel yourself “in the saddle” and will be able to enjoy the stunning winter landscapes and tranquillity of the mountains.

Next destination is the Snow Village , an ambitious tourism project that has been running since 2008. The Snow Village has been painstakingly constructed almost entirely out of ice and snow and features ornately decorated buildings, sculptures and labyrinthine tunnels with intricately patterned rooms, walls and corridors. This enchanting place is the work of true artists and a chance to open your imagination to the magical spirit of winter.

Day 12 Departure from Murmansk

After breakfast, it’s time to check out of our Murmansk hotel. You’ll be transferred to the airport to catch a flight back to either Moscow or on to your next destination.
