Europe - Tour Package Highlights and Trip Insights
With so much to see, do, eat and buy, planning a Europe tour is no easy feat. There are, of course, the typical sightseeing musts: Paris’ Louvre, London’s Tower Bridge, and Rome’s Colosseum. Even Europe’s most frequent visitors will always find something new to discover. Read on for our top Europe tour highlights and Europe trip insights.
Europe Tour Package Highlights
- Go back in time and explore the ruins of ancient civilizations in Italy and Greece
- Snack on cheese and wine (or escargot, if you’re feeling adventurous) in the Champ de Mars, beneath the Eiffel Tower
- Ride a bicycle through the townhouse-lined streets of Amsterdam before touring the canals by boat
- Listen to the romantic songs of the gondoliers as you cruise through the canals of Venice
- Indulge in an authentic Belgian waffle, drowned in chocolate
- Enjoy an ice-cold beer from a beer stein at Oktoberfest in Germany
- Hike from village to village in Italy’s Cinque Terre
- Get lost between the shelves of some of the world’s most beautiful libraries, like those at Trinity College (Dublin, Ireland), Mafra Palace (Mafra, Portugal), and the Clementinum Baroque Library Hall (Prague, Czech Republic)
- Join a Europe tour that goes through many of Europe's travel highlights in countries such as Spain , France , Italy , Netherlands and Scandinavia .
Europe Trip Insights
- Traveling by rail is one of the easiest (and sometimes cheapest) ways to get around Europe, especially if you plan to travel for a couple of weeks (or longer). Investigate rail passes before you visit, particularly ones that can be used between countries. Interrail and Eurail are very popular among travelers.
- Don’t skip the “touristy” destinations. Everyone travels differently, but the most popular European highlights are popular for a reason. Brave the crowds and be sure to stop by those more cliché sites - you’ll be glad you did.
- Try not to over prepare! One of the great benefits of visiting Europe is that it’s incredibly easy to travel between towns and countries. Allow yourself some flexibility to open yourself up to new adventures (and avoid travel burnout). If you've booked a Europe tour package with accommodation, activities, guides etc. get ready to indulge and relax - you are up for a Europe trip of a lifetime.
- Chances are you don’t speak 23 different languages, so be prepared before you travel. Avoid carrying around heavy guide books by downloading a translation app on your phone.
- Note that not all European countries use the Euro, including the United Kingdom , Denmark and Hungary (among others). Do your research beforehand and be ready to juggle different currencies if you’re planning an extensive trip.
- Travelling on a budget? Check our last minute holiday and travel deals to Europe . Also, consider looking for accommodation outside the city centre. Most large European cities are very well connected by public transportation, meaning all your bucket list sites are just a quick (and often inexpensive) bus, train, or metro ride away.
Tours in Europe - Questions and Answers
You can spend a couple of months exploring Europe and still feel like you have not seen everything. Generally speaking, a two-week Europe trip should be just enough if you are looking to cover its major highlights. However, if you want a comprehensive travel experience within this duration, it is better that you focus on a region or a few countries rather than traveling all over the continent.
Choose a single country or schedule your trip around a handful of cities in different countries. While larger European cities may require three to four days to explore, you can get around smaller destinations in a day or two. Planning your trip around a particular region will cut down your travel time and save your time in transit.
If you are planning to visit multiple countries, you should prepare a tentative list of destinations you are interested in. If it is your first trip, stick to major cities and cultural centers for the sake of simplicity and convenience. Also, be flexible and optimize your travel time and budget. Be open to changing your itinerary depending on schedules and ticket prices.
There are dozens of insurance companies offering travel insurance, which can make it difficult for you to choose the right one.
There are a number of things that you should be aware of while purchasing travel insurance. If it is comprehensive medical insurance plans that you are interested in, make sure to find out what all the plan covers. If you are concerned about certain scenarios, then check out customizable travel insurance policies and find out if the provider can cover you for those situations. You also need to determine if there are reasonable coverage limits. Check deductibles and compensation limits in the insurance policy for this.
While insurance is important, it is mostly a safeguard against emergencies. If you are on a budget, you can go with the second- or even third-best option and prioritize getting your money’s worth instead of purchasing the most comprehensive coverage.
Europe has swathes of spectacular landscapes, a rich history, and vibrant cultures. Therefore, deciding on the best travel destinations on the continent can be difficult. However, you can narrow down on highlights by choosing one overarching theme for your trip.
If you are looking forward to immersing yourself in art and history, then Italy, Spain , and France should be on the top of your list. Head for Switzerland , Norway , or Croatia if nature is what you love the most. For beaches and water sports, you will be hard-pressed to find better destinations than Greece , Portugal , and Montenegro.
Having said that, you can also diversify your itinerary by mixing and matching different elements of the same country. Italy tops the charts not just for its medieval monuments and Renaissance art but also for coastal scenery and sun-soaked beaches. Similarly, Spain is a foodie paradise as much as it is an architectural hotspot.
Bus services like FlixBus and BusAbout offer a convenient means of transport if you wish to move from one city to another within the same country. Although these services do travel between countries, they might not be the best choice due to a longer travel time.
Budget airlines are another great way to get around Europe’s major cities, especially when you want to cut down on travel time between two countries. Keep an eye out and you might be able to snag tickets at unbelievable rates. Services like Skyscanner can be of help. Some of the largest budget airlines in the continent are Ryanair , WizzAir , Eurowings , and EasyJet .
Ridesharing services are a godsend for those wishing to immerse themselves in local culture as they offer you the chance to catch a ride with locals along the way. BlaBlaCar is the largest one. The only downside is that it is not always as easy to book a rideshare service as it is to catch a bus or hop on a budget flight.
The USA is one of the 63 countries whose citizens enjoy visa-free entry into the EU Schengen zone along with the UK and associated states like Iceland , Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.
This means that if you are an American citizen with a valid US passport and want to travel to Europe for a limited amount of time for tourism or business purpose, you can do so anytime you want to. However, if you have more long-term plans (say, you intend to get employed, study, or simply live in Europe for an extended period of time), you will need to apply for a visa. The type of your visa and required documentation depend on your goals.
Update for 2022: EU is set to launch ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) by the end of this year. It is similar to ESTA and is supposed to help simplify travel procedures and decrease security risks. All travelers allowed to travel to the EU and associated states visa-free will require an ETIAS authorization. This also includes US citizens.
If your country has a visa-free agreement with the EU, you are allowed to spend up to 90 days within a period of 180 days. Keep in mind that the countdown starts on the date of your entry and ends on the date of your exit. So, for example, if you fly into an EU country on the first of the month and exit on the 15th, it will count as a 15-day stay.
There are 63 countries in the world that have a visa-waiver agreement with the EU . If your country is part of this agreement, you can travel to Europe visa-free. You do, however, need to show the following to be allowed into the Schengen Zone and associated states.
- A valid passport: Your passport should have a validity of at least 3 months at the time of your entry into Schengen and be less than ten years old.
- Purpose of entry: In addition to your passport, you also require documents that prove that you are there for tourism purposes. These documents can include invoices for hotel reservations and booked tours.
- Proof of financial means: You also need to carry documents proving that you can support yourself during your stay in the region.
As long as you have got all three, all you need is a plane ticket to your chosen destination.

Explore all the places we go in Europe
THIS IS WHAT AWAITS IN EUROPE
Towering castles. Untamed natural beauty. Captivating history. Canât-miss cuisine. This is your time, your moment, your chance to discover Europe.
Destination Must-Sees
One of the most well-known tourist destinations in Greece, Olympia is located in the western Peloponnese, known as the âValley of the Gods.â Surrounded by beautiful scenery from the Arcadian Mountains, it is home of the first Olympic Games that were held in 776 B. Step into history when you walk through the ruins of the ancient Olympic stadium or witness amazing sculptures at the museum.
Franceâs romantic capital is a must-see destination, and a gorgeous gateway to the wonders the rest of this country has to offer. Whether your ideal Parisian getaway has you spending some free time sipping coffee at a café and watching the bustling city life, roaming the halls of art at the Louvre, or exploring the bohemian artistâs haven â the Montmartre neighborhood, thereâs rich history and culture abound in every corner of the City of Light.
Irish countryside:
Take in the atmosphere of quaint seaside villages, see awe inspiring views of the Lakes of Killarney and explore the picturesque town of Kinsale. Wherever you travel in the countryside, youâll find that the rolling hills and friendly people you encounter will become a part of your fabric.
Ancient cities of Italy:
Italy is positively brimming with the worldâs most famous Roman ruins like the Colosseum, Pompeii and many other relics from the ancient past. In fact, many cities in Italy still hold evidence of what once was. You can find an aqueduct, city gate, Roman theater or the ruins of an entire city there.
Destination Must-Dos
Meteora Monastery:
Over 600 years ago Byzantine monks chose to build their monastic community atop limestone rock âtowersâ that extend nearly 900 feet into the air, making them virtually inaccessible. It is one of the greatest monuments in the world, and is the most important monastic center in Greece. You can climb these rocks and travel the paths hidden behind the massive rocks.
The Palace of Versailles
The iconic Palace of Versailles (UNESCO) and its gardens reflect the extravagant tastes of King Louis XIV, the "Sun King." Alongside a local guide, learn the history and admire the various rooms of the State Apartments, including the Queen's bedchamber and the famous Hall of Mirrors. Be sure to explore the incredible gardens, some of the most famous in the world, which took over 40 years to complete and include intricate architecture, elaborate fountains, and gorgeous statues.
Drift down a canal:
While canals are found across Europe, nothing beats a romantic gondola ride in Venice. Locals like to say the best way to explore the city is to âget lost.â So take a ride along these waterways, step off and then wind your way through the intricate blend of bridges, narrow streets and grand squares.
This was the first capital of Spain located about 43 miles south of Madrid. The history of Toledo dates back to the Roman occupation circa 192 B.C. The old city of Toledo sits atop of a small mountain surrounded on three sides by the Tagus River, and medieval walls on the fourth. From the top of the mountain you can get a 180 degree view of the surrounding landscape.

Located between Austria, France, Germany and Italy, you can get quite a diverse European cultural experience depending on which region of Switzerland you choose. And though the food, music, art and people themselves are very much influenced by their European neighbors, they are all still uniquely Swiss. You will leave with plenty of memories to savor for a lifetime.

Do you need a visa to travel to Europe?
Whether or not you need a visa to travel to European countries largely depends on the nationality on your passport and whether the country you're traveling to is part of the Schengen Agreement.
This agreement sees 26 European countries offer visa-free travel to nationals from 60 other countries including Australia, the United States, Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom.Â
To determine whether the country you're traveling to requires a visa, head to the  Schengen Visa's information website. Â
What is the internet access like in Europe?
You can easily access the internet in most countries in Europe, generally in capital cities and other major towns. Internet access may be limited in regional locations such as national parks or remote villages in some countries.Â
Can I use my cell phone in Europe?
You shouldn't have a problem using your cell phone while traveling throughout Europe, however, your international data roaming will need to be activated in order to connect to the internet or send messages (unless you connect to the local wi-fi).Â
What are the toilets like in Europe?
Modern, flushable toilets are the standard in the majority of European countries.Â
Can I drink the water in Europe?
Tap water in most European countries is considered safe to drink unless it is otherwise marked.Â
When should I book a tour in Europe?
There is no 'best time' to travel around Europe as most countries offer plenty to do in every season of the year.
T he most popular time to travel to countries like Greece, Italy, and Croatia is during the summer months (June, July, and August) so you can make the most of each country's respective beaches and warm weather.
C ountries such as Iceland, Norway, and Sweden are known for their snowy landscapes and northern lights sightings during Winter (December, January, and February).
How much does a Europe tour cost?
A tour in Europe can vary depending on the countries you want to visit, the style of tour, and how long you want to go for but you can expect to pay anywhere between USD$1,000 to USD$5,000, with most tours around USD$2,500.Â
Is tipping common in Europe?

Is Europe safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?
Europe is considered a reasonably safe continent for LGBTQIA+ travelers with plenty of countries openly accepting, welcoming, and embracing the community.
This is evident in large capital cities such as Paris, Berlin, Madrid, and Vienna.
Some countries still hold traditional religious beliefs such as Belarus and Poland so a degree of caution should be taken when travelling around cities and remote regions in those countries.
Will I need a socket adapter for Europe?
If you plan on traveling to multiple countries throughout Europe then purchasing an all-in-one, worldwide adapter is the safest way to go.
I f you don't want to do that, your safest bet is to buy an adapter that uses C or E/F-type plugs as most European countries recognize this.Â

Enjoy afternoon tea in London
Sample over 300-years of history in the simplicity of homemade scones with whipped cream and jam. This deliciously British treat is best enjoyed in the afternoon, complete with a hot cup of Earl Grey, cucumber sandwiches and a tower of sugary delights.
Explore ancient Athens
You don't need to be a historian to appreciate the significance of Athens. Your love affair with the city might begin with goddess Athenaâs Parthenon temple and the ruins of Acropolis, but itâs likely to end in a quaint alleyway getting a glimpse at daily life in this ancient capital. The story of Athens continues to unfold.
Catch a flamenco show in Spain
Discover the soul-stirring emotion of a Flamenco show in Spain. This expressive art-form has an intangible cultural heritage recognised by UNESCO, merging song, dance and musical instruments into a performance that has to be experienced at least once. Finish with dinner of paella or tapas to round off your perfect evening.
View the Northern Lights in Iceland
Mother Natureâs wonders come to life with the Aurora Borealis or âNorthern Lightsâ. In the frosty landscapes of Iceland, this light display offers viewers a genuine pinch-me moment as vivid colours dance across the night sky.
Spend a night at the opera in Vienna
Hear the talents of traditional opera with the ghosts of Mozart and Strauss in your presence. Though there are more than few places to catch the opera in Vienna, none can compare to the State Opera House (Staatsoper).
Our top 5 things to do in Europe & Britain
There are endless pinch-me moments to be found across the many countries that make up our Europe travel packages. But where to even begin? Perhaps a Flamenco show in Spain, afternoon tea in London or a Northern Lights viewing in frosty Iceland? Here are some of the highlights of our Europe and Britain trips that you're sure to love.Â
Paris, France
The worldâs largest gallery and the home of Leonardo da Vinciâs Mona Lisa, the Louvre is without rival in the art world and is a must see when in Paris. Allow an entire day to explore its eight departments, not missing the Egyptian antiquities, Islamic art and various halls of sculptures. End your day with sunset by the Louvre Pyramid.
London, England
The British Museum
With some eight million works within its permanent collection, The British Museum is an illustrious European landmark. Admire objects brought back from the voyages of Captain James Cook and walk in the controversial presence of the Parthenon Marbles.
Florence, Italy
Uffizi Gallery
The Tuscan capital is home to Uffizi Gallery, where the brushworks of artâs true masters can be found. Names like Raffaello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo fill Uffiziâs grand pink walls, whilst internal courtyards leading to the Arno River reveal the buildingâs architectural brilliance.
Best museums in Europe & Britain
When traveling Europe with Trafalgar, museum hopping is one of the best ways to understand the culture and history of the places you visit. Youâll find yourself critiquing ancient art and staring in awe at some of the worldâs most prominent works. Here are some of our favorites.
Paella Valenciana
Saffron, snails, butterbeans and bomba rice are just some of the ingredients you might find in traditional Spanish paella. Despite originating from the coastal town of Valencia, Paella Valenciana is a variety without seafood. You'll love sitting back to enjoy a steaming plate over the sounds of Spanish jazz in a lively alfresco restaurant.
Beef Stroganoff
Now a staple dish in many parts of the world, beef stroganoff is best enjoyed in its birthplace in Russia with a vodka in hand. This simple dish of beef strips sauteed in a sour cream sauce offers a heart-warming taste of this countryâs culinary heritage.
Bouillabaisse
The Mediterranean city of Marseille is where a French culinary icon can be found and devoured. The fragrant stew of bouillabaisse, commonly served with crusty white bread, boils up the finest local seafood and seasonal vegetables with the flavors of fennel, saffron and cayenne pepper.
Best food in Europe & Britain
Our trips to Europe gravitate around indulgent local mealtimes. With new cuisines and cooking methodologies found at every turn, this continent is simply delicious.Â
What to pack for a tour in Europe
With such a large expanse of space to explore on a European travel tour, on some days, long journeys are unavoidable. The scenery will provide plenty of visual entertainment, while headphones can be used to listen to some local music or enjoy podcasts about European history, culture and politics when you're not enjoying the storytelling from your Travel Director.
A good book
Exploring Europe is best done at a relaxed pace with ample opportunity to absorb your surroundings. Dedicate a few days to sitting in a park or a cafe, alternating between reading and watching the world go by.
Versatile shoes
Within the space of one outing you may experience all kinds of terrain when in Europe. Pack shoes that can see you walking from an elegant restaurant to a cobbled footpath, with a stroll along the soft grass of a park in between.
A blank journal
With the wealth of inspiration tucked into every corner of Europe, you may find yourself compelled to write down notes or memories. At the very least to share recommendations with friends when you return home.
All climate clothing
No matter the time of year you travel, Europe can deliver a myriad of temperatures. From frosty cities of Scandinavia to the temperate hills of Portugal, layered clothing best suits the varying micro-climates across this continent.
Pack for sustainable travel
Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

There are plenty of options when it comes to exploring the continent. Some of the most popular destinations to visit on a tour of Europe include Italy, Greece, Spain, and Ireland.

Discover six things to experience your first time traveling to Europe â
Europe is a year-round destination with varying climates across its many countries and regions. The best time to visit Europe depends on what type of experience youâd like to have and which destinations youâll be visiting.
- Summer. A popular time to travel to Europe is summer because warm, sunny days lend themselves to exploring the outdoors. In July, the average high temperature in London, England, is in the 70s Fahrenheitâwhile in Rome, Italy, the average high is in the 80s.
- Spring and Fall. Some travelers prefer to travel on our Europe tour packages during the spring and fall because temperatures are more comfortable and popular sites are less crowded.
- Winter. A wonderful time to take a European tour is the winter. During this time of year, travelers can stroll through festive holiday markets, visit excellent museums, and settle in for tasty meals of seasonal specialties. To take the stress out of planning a winter trip, we even offer Europe trip packages specifically designed for visiting Christmas markets .
One of the main benefits of joining our guided tours of Europe is having the opportunity to visit must-see sites with an expert leading the way. When you go guided with Go Ahead weâll help you skip the long lines at popular landmarks. Here are some attractions youâll get the opportunity to see on our group tours of Europe:
- The Colosseum in Rome, Italy
- The National Archaeological Museum in Naples, Italy
- St. Markâs Basilica in Venice, Italy
- The Alhambra in Granada, Spain
- The Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain
- La Sagrada FamĂlia church in Barcelona, Spain
- The Acropolis in Athens, Greece
- The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands

- The Titanic Museum in Belfast, Northern Ireland
- The Hungarian Parliament building in Budapest, Hungary
- Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria
- The Viking Ship Museum in Oslo, Norway
- Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen, Denmark
We recommend you spend at least six days in Europe. While our most popular Europe tours run from 10â14 days, you can enjoy a shorter trip if you limit your tour to one country or visit a handful of cities in neighboring countries.

Yes! The holidays are an exciting time to travel on our Europe trips because they offer an exceptional opportunity to visit Europeâs Christmas Markets  and to experience countriesâ unique holiday traditions. The holidays are a magical time in many European countries, allowing you to soak in the seasonal ambiance, enjoy festive food, and pick up unique gifts.
Thankfully, thatâs a tough question to answer, as so many European countries offer delicious food. Ultimately, itâs a matter of personal preference, so youâre sure to find something you love no matter which country you visit. One strong contender for the top spot, however, is Italy.
Best known for its pasta, pizza, cheeses, and gelato, Italy is a foodieâs delight. Thatâs because the purest expression of Italian cooking relies on farm-fresh ingredients, and the cuisine changes from region to region. Fresh, delicious, and unlike anything youâve tried outside the country, Italian food never disappoints the palate.
Wondering what to eat in Italy? Check out these regional dishes â
Another foodie's favorite destination in Europe is France. From its boeuf bourguignon to its pain au chocolat, France is known for its world-class culinary scene and timeless favorite dishes. While youâre guaranteed to taste delicious dishes no matter where you travel to France , the type of French food youâll find depends on the region and season. The north of France features heavier dishes; the south features fresh fish, lean meat, and grilled vegetables.

While individual countries take pride in their languages, English is widely spoken in Europe.

We recommend packing light for your trip to Europe. One suitcase and one carry-on per person is a good guideline to follow; you should feel comfortable managing your baggage at the airport. After youâve reserved one of our Europe tour packages, weâll give you information about how to prepare for your particular trip and even share a packing list in our mobile app.
- Sun protection. For all our trips, especially during the summer months in Europe, we recommend bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect your face and the back of your neck from the sun.
- Layers. For tours of Europe, we recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
- Comfortable walking shoes. Because youâll be exploring new destinations with local guides while on your trip, a comfortable pair of walking shoes is essential. Whether hitting the landmarks of London or on a walking tour of Amsterdam, youâll be glad you brought your most comfortable footwear.
- Dressier attire. You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance on any of our Europe trips.
- Full-coverage layers for religious sites. In Europe, it is preferable not to visit churches, temples, or other religious sites with bare legs or shoulders, and entrance may be denied on this basis.
- Other must-bring items. A camera to take photos during your journey, and a notebook for jotting down notes or recommendations your Tour Director shares.

Why should you book a vacation package to Europe?
By booking packages, you can ensure that your itinerary includes your destination's major sights and experiences. Packages are also a great way to cut the cost of visiting Europe. With the right deal, you can combine luxury accommodation, access to the sights and a rental car, and have money left over to shop for souvenirs.
When should you book a vacation package to Europe?
Booking European packages is an excellent way to save money and make travel easy, and you can make even bigger savings by traveling at the right time of year.
In southern Europe, peak season lasts from around June to September, but cheaper shoulder season breaks in May or October can be almost as sunny. In the north, the peak season is shorter, so look for affordable packages in fall and spring. However, expect price spikes around Christmas and local events like Oktoberfest in Munich or Bastille Day in Paris (14 July).
Where should you stay in Europe during your vacation?
For any vacation type in europe:.
The Four Seasons Hotel George V is perfectly located for sightseers in Paris and is an Art Deco gem with gorgeous views of the Eiffel Tower. It's just an hour from Charles de Gaulle Airport, while a meet and greet service is available on request.
Located on the famous "Rambla", Hotel 1898 is one of the finest places to stay in Barcelona. Blessed with amazing city vistas from its terrace, and created from a renovated 19th century mansion, it is 500 meters from the Aerobus stop at Plaza Cataluña.
For family vacations in Europe:
The La Marquise Luxury Resort Complex on the Greek island of Rhodes is a fantastic family hotel with kids' facilities featuring games rooms, pools and multilingual support staff. It's all just 6 miles from Rhodes Airport.
Located on Italy's Amalfi Coast, the Hotel Poseidon in Castellammare has a spacious parking lot on-site, while recreation options like tennis courts make it very appealing for families. It's also an easy drive to and from Naples Airport.
For romantic vacations in Europe:
If you want to see Venice, the Hilton Molino Stucky is ideal. It's conveniently placed for taking gondola cruises and to see the Biennale. Water taxis from the airport arrive a few meters from the hotel door.
Ideal for a romantic break in laid-back Amsterdam, the Rembrandt Square Hotel is right at the city's heart - and next to the spectacular flower market. A taxi from Schiphol Airport takes just 14 minutes.
For luxury vacations in Europe:
London's Ritz Hotel is like a synonym for luxury. Situated on Piccadilly, it offers delicious Indian and Lebanese food, stunning furnishings and couldn't be more convenient for seeing the sights. It's also almost directly connected to Heathrow Airport via the London Tube.
Lisbon's Four Seasons Ritz Hotel is another great choice for a luxury getaway in Europe, with its Louis XVI style design, artworks in every room and relaxing urban gardens. It's just 20 minutes by car from Lisbon Airport.
For budget vacations in Europe:
A great base for exploring Germany's capital, the A&O Berlin Kolumbus is tucked away from the action but only 15 minutes from Alexanderplatz, the city's hub. This means that getting there from the airport is also quick and easy.
Copenhagen's City Hotel Nebo ticks all the boxes for budget breaks in Denmark. It has a central location and is an easy walk away from the capital's galleries and family attractions like Copenhagen Zoo. And it's just 12 minutes away from the airport by train.

What you need to know about European travel this summer
With headlines warning of everything from flight delays to wildfires, summer travel is changing. Hereâs how to make sure your trip this summer goes smoothly.
Record numbers of tourists are expected to visit Europe this summer. In the first three months of 2024, the number of international arrivals has already risen by 7.2% compared to 2019âs pre-pandemic figures, according to the European Travel Commission , with 120 million international tourists visiting the region in that time. Yet while this is welcome news for the tourism industry, some challenges remain for visitors, especially during the summerâs busy peak season, when potential flight delays, high temperatures, new laws and major events could all impact travel. Hereâs what you need to know to make sure your European trip this summer goes smoothly.
1. What you need to know about flight disruptions
Increased passenger numbers, staff shortages and strikes meant there were 106.7 million delayed air passengers in Europe during peak summer months last year. More than 700,000 passengers were affected over the August bank holiday in the UK alone following a technical meltdown at air traffic control. This year, EasyJet has had to cancel over 100 flights from Paris due to a no-fly zone during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. Ryanair has also cut flights from its summer schedule after the delivery of several of its new Boeing aircraft was delayed. If youâre due to fly, visit the airportâs website for the latest information, and check social media for real-time updates from other travellers. Remember that you may be owed compensation if you face disruption, but rules vary, so take out a travel insurance policy as soon as you book flights.
( What should you do if your flight is delayed or cancelled? )
2. Why you should consider travelling by train
Keep your carbon footprint low, avoid airport hassle and see even more of Europe this summer by taking advantage of a whole host of new and expanded routes across the continent. New services include a high-speed route connecting Barcelona to Madrid and Seville , a sleeper train from Brussels to Prague , a daily train between Vilnius and Riga , a relaunched night train between Paris and Nice and a sleeper train from Rome to the Dolomites . Following the success of Germanyâs âŹ49 unlimited monthly travel pass last year, France has also introduced its own nationwide rail pass for the same price. However, this is only valid for those under 27 and excludes high-speed TGV trains and travel in the greater Paris region of Ile-de-France.

3. What to do you if youâre affected by wildfires
Following unprecedented high temperatures, wildfires swept through some of Europeâs most popular tourist spots last summer, scorching parts of Tenerife, mainland Spain, Greece, Portugal and Italy. This year, protective measures have already been put in place that aim to prevent a repeat of the disaster, with Greece banning all outdoor fires from April and increasing investment in fire detection and water tankers. To ensure youâre protected if the worst happens, arrange travel insurance at the time of booking, then keep an eye on official travel advisories for up-to-date information. If youâre affected by wildfires or any other natural disasters when youâre away, follow the advice of the emergency services and evacuate when instructed, then contact your tour operator or airline for help getting home.
( What to do if youâre caught in a disaster while travelling. )
4. How big events could disrupt your travel Â
From Taylor Swiftâs tour across Europe to the UEFA European Championship in Germany, Europe is limbering up for a summer of major cultural and sporting events. The Olympic Games in Paris are expected to attract three million more visitors than usual . This is likely to mean a greater demand for accommodation, higher prices, crowded public transport, unexpected road closures and even increased security checks in response to the heightened risk of terrorist attacks. If your holiday does coincide with an event, try to explore beyond the city itself, visit nearby tourist attractions that could be quieter than normal, or just enjoy the inevitable citywide buzz surrounding the main event.

5. Why you should think about overcrowding
While many destinations welcome a return to pre-pandemic levels of tourism, others are actively trying to deter visitors. In Barcelona , tour groups have been capped at 20 people, while entrance to Athensâ Acropolis is now limited to 20,000 tourists each day. Dubrovnik has already cut the number of souvenir stands by 80%, while thousands attended an anti-tourism protest in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in April. All are concerned that overcrowding leads to skyrocketing prices for locals and causes environmental damage, with increased plastic pollution, erosion of heritage sites and traffic congestion. Consider less-visited destinations instead, swapping Santorini for Folegandros an hourâs ferry ride away, Dubrovnik for Ć ibenik with its medieval centre and fortress, or Barcelona for the Spanish seaside city of Valencia.
( Whatâs the problem with overtourism? )
6. How to deal with heatwaves
2023 was the hottest year on record globally, with temperatures in Europe above average for 11 months of the year. The Mediterranean was the worst area affected, with temperatures soaring above 40°C across Italy, Spain, Turkey, Cyprus and Greece. Consider travelling outside the hottest months, between July and September, or visiting destinations further north such as Denmark, Germany, Belgium, Lithuania or Ireland which should escape the most intense heat. If temperatures do climb, wear high-factor SPF, avoid being outside in the middle of the day and wear light-coloured clothes made from breathable materials. Avoid alcohol and drink plenty of water, and keep a close eye on vulnerable people, including young children and the elderly.
7. How to avoid being caught out by local laws and taxes
Do your research before travelling to make sure you donât fall foul of new laws. A âŹ5 tax for day-trippers was introduced in Venice in April, for example, and will be enforced on selected dates until July. It can be paid online in advance, and those staying overnight are exempt but do still need to register. A second tourist tax of âŹ1 to âŹ5 per night is already applicable to overnight stays and should be paid at your hotel. Be aware that some Airbnbs ask that this is paid in cash. Other new rules in parts of Mallorca and Ibiza ban drinking on the street and prevent shops selling alcohol at night, though you will still be able to buy drinks in bars and restaurants.

Here It Comes: Another Hot Summer in Europe
Extreme heat and other weather challenges are in the forecast this summer, and travel advisers, tourists and local officials are getting prepared.
By Ceylan YeÄinsu
Europe, the worldâs fastest-warming continent, is headed for another scorching summer, meteorologists warn. And travelers, once again, are heading to the hot spots.
Last year, large parts of southern Europe experienced prolonged periods of extreme heat with temperatures reaching 118 degrees and lasting up to two weeks or more. The sweltering conditions upended vacations throughout the summer season as visitors collapsed from heat exhaustion at crowded tourist sites, and wildfires led to evacuations in Greece, Italy and Spain.
âOur computer models are in good agreement that itâs going to be another unusually hot summer, especially during late July through August,â said Todd Crawford, vice president of meteorology at Atmospheric G2 , a weather and climate intelligence firm based in Manchester, N.H. The company expects the magnitude of the heat to be similar to 2022, the hottest summer ever recorded in Europe, with the most anomalous heat projected in the south, in popular countries for travelers like Greece, Croatia and Italy.
Since 1991, Europe has been warming at twice the global average, and 23 of the 30 most severe heat waves in Europe since 1950 have occurred since 2000, with five in the last three years, according to the World Meteorological Organization. The European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service said several factors contribute to the continentâs vulnerability, including the proportion of European land in the Arctic â the fastest-warming region on earth â and changes in atmospheric circulation.
Yet despite the forecast and increasing trend of excessive summer heat, demand is still high for destinations where temperatures reached 100 degrees or higher in recent summers. Overall, U.S. demand for travel to Europe has increased since last year, according to the travel site Hopper . Rome, Paris and Athens are among the most searched cities out of billions of annual searches for summer vacations on Kayak and Expedia.
âThe destinations are being booked again, and what really characterizes people is how quickly they forget and push back negative experiences,â said Stefan Gössling, a professor who researches tourism and climate change at Linnaeus University in Sweden. âPeople who were caught in life-threatening situations like the wildfires may reconsider where they travel, but for the broader population, we are not yet seeing a big change in decision-making because of the heat.â
Green spaces and heat officers: Cities adapt
As the summer approaches, popular destinations that were hit hard last year are working on protocols to make residents and tourists safe and more comfortable. In 2021, Athens became the first European city to appoint a chief heat officer to oversee those efforts. One of the first steps was to categorize heat waves by severity, like hurricanes, as an early warning system for the potential impact on human health. It is also naming heat waves to emphasize their potential risks.
âHeat is a silent killer and projections for the coming years show that it will only get worse, so we are redesigning our city and making changes to adapt,â said Elissavet Bargianni, the chief heat officer for Athens. Beyond raising awareness, the city plans to implement additional measures, which include increasing the number of green spaces and creating cool public areas.
For visitors planning to visit Athens this summer, Ms. Bargianni advises using the Extrema Global app that calculates the coolest route for getting from point A to point B according to the current temperature and density of the trees. The city already has several air-conditioned cooling centers that are free.
During last Julyâs heat wave, the Acropolis was forced to close between midday and the early evening to protect visitors after some of them collapsed from the heat. The ministry of culture could make the same decision this year, Ms. Bargianni said, if the heat is severe.
Heat and tours: Travel advisers get creative
Travel advisers are also factoring heat into flexible itineraries. In cities like Rome, Barcelona, Paris and Athens, they are scheduling sightseeing in the cooler morning and evening hours, and arranging air-conditioned transportation.
âWe tend to do activities and tours in the morning, then stop for lunch, and in the mid- to late afternoon you either go back to the hotel to sit by the pool or go to the beach,â said Gary Portuesi, a co-managing partner at Authentic Explorations, a New York-based travel company that specializes in Europe.
If clients insist on taking midday tours, the company will work with local partners to make the experience as comfortable as possible. âIf there is a six-hour tour, for example, they will cut it down to four and take them to an air-conditioned gelateria for a break,â Mr. Portuesi said.
It is not only the heat that travel advisers have had to grapple with, but also other unpredictable weather events. Last summer, while some parts of the continent were hot and dry, others were cold and wet. âThere was a period during the summer peak when it was hotter in the Dolomites than it was in Sicily,â said Jennifer Schwartz, the Italy-based partner of Authentic Explorations. âThe most important aspect of our job is to set expectations about the variables and guide people instead of saying itâs too hot, donât come.â
Heat insurance?
To help travelers book with more confidence, Sensible Weather, a Los Angeles-based start-up that provides a weather guarantee for vacations and outdoor experiences, has recently added high heat protection to its coverage. When booking through a Sensible partner, travelers will be able to add daily protection and if the temperature exceeds a threshold â usually set between 90 and 100 degrees â they can claim reimbursement. Currently, the insurance is only available in the United States, but, the company said, will gradually be rolled out in Europe and elsewhere.
âThe goal of the company is to cover everything that can ruin a trip, and usually itâs rain, but temperature is number two,â said Nick Cavanaugh, the companyâs founder who was developing the product while caught in a heat wave in Barcelona last year.
Customers do not need to cancel their trip in order to be reimbursed. Those on package tours are reimbursed for the average daily rate of their entire trip for each day that surpassed the heat threshold. âOur customers can still go on their vacations, but if itâs too hot for some hours of the day and unpleasant to go outside, you can hang out in the air-conditioning and we will reimburse you,â Mr. Cavanaugh said.
Heading to cooler climes
Some travelers who were caught in Europeâs heat waves last summer are seeking cooler destinations this summer in places like Norway, Slovenia, Switzerland, Sweden and Finland. Flight searches for TromsĂž, Norway, for example, have increased by 85 percent over 2023, according to Kayak.
Joanna Walker, a 43-year-old recruiter from Boston, was caught in a blistering heat wave with her family in Italy last July and vowed never to return during the summer. She said she had been advised to travel during the shoulder season, but couldnât because her children were in school.
âWe couldnât even cool off in the pool because there was no shade and the water was hot,â Ms. Walker recalled. âWe wanted to see the sights in Florence and have long lunches in the piazzas, but instead we were stuck in our overpriced villas under the air-conditioning.â
This year her family has booked a tour of Norwayâs fjords in July, where temperatures linger in the high 60s. âItâs going to be a different vibe to Italy for sure, lots of nature and not as much history, but at least it will be cool enough to experience something.â

BYD calls out the US and Europe for being ‘afraid’ of Chinese EVs
Is the West afraid of Chinese electric cars? According to BYD CEO Wang Chuanfu, there are many examples of politicians who are worried about low-cost Chinese EVs, hinting at the US and Europe.
BYD says the US, Europe are worried about Chinese EVs
âIf you are not strong enough, they will not be afraid of you,â Wang said at an industry event on Friday (via Bloomberg ).
He added, âThere are many examples of politicians in other countries who are worried about EVs in China.â The comments come as the US and Europe aim to hamper Chinese EV imports with new tariffs.
BYDâs CEO said the tariffs are a testament to the strength of Chinaâs auto industry. Wangâs swipe at the West comes after the US increased tariffs on China-made imports, including EVs, batteries, and critical minerals.
The EU is also expected to introduce new tariffs aimed at Chinese EVs shortly. Europe launched an investigation into China-made EVs as the global markets are ânow flooded with cheaper electric cars,â European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in September.
China has since threatened to retaliate with a 25% tariff on imports as global trade tensions heat up.
BYD, China-made EVs take on global markets
BYD posted its second-highest sales ever last month after introducing a series of new lower-cost electric (and PHEV) cars.
The new BYD Seagull , its cheapest EV, starts at just $9,700 (69,800 yuan) in China. Even in overseas markets, the âmini Lamborghiniâ (as former Lamborghini designer Wolfgang Egger led its design) is still one of the cheapest electric options.
In Brazil, the Seagull EV starts at around $20,000 (99,800 BRL). BYDâs car transport ship, Explorer No 1, landed in Brazilâs Port of Suape earlier this week, unloading 7,000 new energy vehicles (EVs and PHEVs).
The Explorer first docked in Germany in February, carrying 3,000 vehicles, as BYD expands the brand globally.
According to global data collection firm Dataforce , Chinese EVs, like BYD and MG, accounted for around 9% of EVs sold in Europe last year. However, that number is expected to rise quickly over the next few years.
European lobby group Transport and Environment , Chinese EVs could account for a quarter of EVs sold in Europe this year.
After topping VW, becoming Chinaâs top-selling automaker last year, BYD looks to take on global markets.
While addressing the audience Friday, Wang said the industry should embrace competition if it wants to manage the transition to EVs.
Electrekâs Take
BYD is quickly expanding overseas. Itâs already an EV leader in key markets like Thailand, Brazil, Israel, Columbia, and others.
Despite its low price tag, BYDâs Seagull has earned praise from industry leaders. Fordâs CEO Jim Farley called it a âpretty damn goodâ car, warning rivals of BYDâs superior tech.
Even with tariffs, BYD expects the Seagull EV to launch as one of Europeâs cheapest electric cars at under $21,500 (20,000 euros). BYD is also planning a higher-end $27,000 (25,000 euro) model, according to European managing director Michael Shu.
Top comment by Grant
They are afraid of Chinese manufacturing. I would propose a compromise, by allowing them to build factories in the US and Europe as long as most everything for the vehicles are produced locally as well. This includes batteries.
With two planned plants in the region, BYD expects to overcome any potential impacts of tariffs on China-made EVs.
Although BYD is best known for its affordable EVs, the automaker is expanding into new segments, such as mid-size SUVs, luxury vehicles, and pickup trucks.
BYD launched the Sea Lion 07 last month, which will compete with Teslaâs top-selling Model Y. Starting at 189,800 yuan ($26,250), BYDâs new electric SUV undercuts the Model Y in China, which starts at 249,900 yuan ($34,550).
It also launched its first pickup, the Shark PHEV , in Mexico. The BYD Shark will compete with top-selling trucks like Toyotaâs Hilux and the Ford Ranger in the region.

Interview with Hiroki-san!
âąÂ What made you hold another World Tour this year?
The decision to hold another DRAGON BALL FighterZ World Tour this year was influenced by several factors. First, the recent releases of the game on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Second, the energy and passion displayed by players during last yearâs Battle Hour event demonstrated the gameâs vibrant community. Third, the robust online player base continues to thrive, making the World Tour a platform for dedicated fighters to prove their skills. Finally, we want this World Tour to be the pinnacle of all World Tours for DBFZ, uniting top players and celebrating the gameâs competitive scene.
âą Was the rollback netcode implementation another reason for having this tour?
Of course, this is also an important reason as it was an awaited feature. To take advantage  of this feature, we are happy to have online leaderboards in this yearâs World Tour, giving more chances to more players aiming to enter the World Tour.
âą Can you tell us more about this hybrid online and offline format?
As mentioned, the rollback implementation allows us to add online leaderboards to the format on top of the traditional offline Power, Power+, and Tenkaichi events. The online leaderboards will be regional and will give access to a ticket for the LCQ. We have done our best to select a maximum number of countries putting into account the number of users online. In any case, anyone from any country can organize their own Tenkaichi event to gain points in the WW offline events ranking.
âą What can we expect from now on?
I believe the team and I achieved what we wanted for this game, with the PS5, XBOX SERIES X|S version release and the rollback update with the help from the studio behind the PS5, XBOX SERIES X|S version. I have one more good news for our players - Arc System Works and I are working on a new balance patch to come this summer after EVO to spice the competition up a bit more!
âą One last word?
Allow me to thank one more time all the players, the community, the tournament organizers, everyone who helped in putting together the World Tour since 2018, including the wonderful casters Damascus and Tyrant !
I wish everyone a great competition this year again!
