We are proud to be your partner in these soul-expanding, life-altering adventures.

Rentals are available from more than 150 locations around the world, giving riders easy access to jump on a plane, rent a motorcycle, and be one that incredible motorcycle road or destination you have been dreaming of. Ride the Alps, the South of France, Italy, Greece, Spain, Morocco, Australia, South America, New Zealand, Japan, Mexico, Croatia, South Africa, Indian, Canada, and many other dream destinations. You can also choose from over 100 locations across the United States, giving you easy access great destinations, world-famous motorcycle rallies like Sturgis and Daytona Bike Week, and easy long-weekend rides when you want to escape the snow and head to Florida, Southern California, Arizona, Texas, New Orleans, or any of the “sun belt” states during the winter months. EagleRider offers one-way motorcycle rentals from most US locations, allowing you to see more of the country and get the most out of your seat time.

EagleRider offers three types of motorcycle tours: Self-Drive Tours, Guided Tours, and Custom Tours.

Self-Drive Tours are very popular with riders who are looking for the flexibility to ride on their own schedule, or that prefer to ride solo or with a small group of friends. Our Self-Drive Tours include your motorcycle rental, hand-selected, motorcycle friendly hotels, your detailed route and itinerary, as well as our proprietary Mobile Tour Guide App, which contains all your turn-by-turn digital maps, hotel vouchers, and thousands of highlights and attractions across the USA. Self-Drive Tours may be selected from more than 75 of our most popular motorcycle road trips , or our team of Tour Architects can work with you to modify and customize the perfect itinerary. Self-Drive Tours may range in length from 1 night to as many nights as you wish.

EagleRider’s Guided Tours have become the gold standard of the motorcycle travel and tour industry, with more than 120 group departures annually, many filled with riders who or on their third, fourth, and sometimes seventh or eighth tour with us. Our Guided Tours are led by our “Rock Star,” professional Tour Leaders, many of whom have been leading tours for 12+ years with EagleRider, and two of which will hit their 50th and 66th trips down the length of Route 66 in 2023. Our Guided Tours travel with groups that average 10 – 12 bikes, with a maximum of 15, and include your motorcycle rental, first-rate hotels, daily breakfast, fuel for bikes, door to door luggage transportation, and much, much more. We even include the helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon on our very popular Route 66 and Wild West Guided Tours. Our other popular routes cover Canada, the Canadian Rockies and Yellowstone, Glacier National Park, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, the Bonneville Salt Flats, Las Vegas, Palm Springs, Colorado, the Blues Trail between New Orleans, Memphis, and Nashville, Blue Ridge Parkway, Tail of the Dragon, Coast to Coast, and more. EagleRider’s Guided Tours are the ultimate riding experience where you will start with a group of people you have never met, then finish the tour a week or two later feeling like you are part of a new family, with many of your planning your next tour together before the current one even ends! Our Professional Tour Leaders speak English, Germany, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Japanese, Mandarin, and more. We run our standard departures in multiple languages, all of which can be found on the Guided Motorcycle Tours page.

EagleRider’s Custom Tours can be both Self-Drive and Guided. Our team of Tour Architects will work with you or your group leader, depending on who is traveling, and take as long as needed to come up to create the perfect itinerary that meets your budget. The fact that we’ve been doing this since 1992 means we know every corner of the globe and that we have relationships in place with hotel and attraction partners that allow us access to experiences that no other company gets. There are lots of great tour companies out there, with most renting bikes from us, but if you are going to be on our bikes, you might as well be on our tour. Whether it’s a private trip down Route 66, a group ride to the Grand Canyon or Casablanca, or a two week ride in South America or Europe, our global footprint allows us to craft the ultimate riding experience for your private group.

RIDE Adventures started as an adventure motorcycle tour company. For over a decade we've made EPIC worldwide motorcycle adventures easy. We have thousands of miles and countless hours beating the life out of our gear. With our experience, we want to help you find the best parts and gear for your next adventure.

We Want To Help You Become a Confident Rider RIDE Adventures is a team of experienced motorcycle and 4x4 adventure guides and travelers helping you explore the world. It's an understatment to say that we LOVE helping riders experience a trip of a lifetime. But, during our work as guides it was clear that riders wanted more.

Many people taking our tours are new to adventure riding. Riding a motorcycle for days on end requires special preparation, additional motorcycle skills, and a complete mental shift from your typical road rider.

To help adventure riders we're adding resources and expanding our services. We've added ADV Expedition Training so you can develop your off-road riding skills and confidence. We've been hard at work creating videos on and blogs about bikes, gear, and tips. And now we're bringing you the best adventure gear at your fingertips. Check out our other resources below.

Our Team of Adventure Seekers

Amazing what has become of RIDE Adventures since launching the business as a simple Motorcycle Tour & Rental Operation, starting with the Patagonia region of Chile and Argentina back in 2010. All these years later, my Teammates and I have helped thousands of riders from around the world not only in their international travel endeavors, but also in preparing themselves for these trips with the right riding gear selections, motorcycle parts, and adventure riding training.

As time rolls on, our YouTube Channel  has not only become a series of fun projects and mountains of laughs for us, but it's proven to be a great way to connect with so many of you around the world who want to become a better rider, and also wonder "which is the right gear for me?" Our expertise on such matters come from long experience as motorcycle tour guides in the various regions we operate in around the world, and my own particular set-up (as of 2022) can even be seen on this  Ultimate All-Weather ADV Gear Setup video . In the end, our sincere hope is that we help you make the right choice, the first time.

Help yourself to our many product review videos, blog posts, product descriptions, and all the info we provide to guide you in your purchasing decisions, and we'll back-up your purchases with Top-Tier Customer Service and product selection. Give us your feedback on how we're doing, and whether or not you enjoy your purchase. We'll constantly be working with the manufacturers we represent to channel your feedback to them as directly as possible, which in the end means longer-lasting, higher-performing, and the best in product evolution for all of us.

Jeff Taylor

Hey Rider - welcome to the Ride Adventures Store. I have a background in digital marketing, product management, and fueling start up ideas. I'm also a Type A adventure traveler who just loves to get to new places and do new things. I frequently do cave expeditions, canyoneering trips, overland trips (truck and moto), climb mountains, backpack, mountainbike, with an occasional stroll down the beach in a fast boat.

So it made perfect sense to jump on with the RIDE Adventure team and start helping build one of the best resources for adventure riders you can find. Our goal is to create a space where anyone interested in adventure riding can get find the info they're looking for. RIDE Adventures already provides worldwide adventure motorcycle tours for those who are experienced riders. We also have in person off-road adventure rider training for those of you need a refresher, or an intro into what it takes to become an experienced rider. We have a blog and YouTube channel that covers a wide range adventure riding topics. And now we'll have a store where you can take find the perfect gear for the type of trip you're planning to ride. Have fun, and reach out if you have questions.

4x4 / Jeep Adventure Trips

If you're excited about motorcycle adventures in any of the regions on our website,  the lowest cost way of having such a motorcycle trip is to do it self-guided!

One of the World's Most Expensive Hobbies (motorcycle riding) demands that we're careful with spending when possible, so by going "on your own" with one of our rental motorcycles, you'll be able to avoid the costs of having our guides and support staff with you.

In some regions, we offer pre-paid hotel packages with route notes or GPS to make the trip just a bit easier to carry out, but if you'd just like to rent a motorcycle and "go it alone," a self-guided tour might be just for you!

See All the Great Self-Guided Riding Trips We Offer Here!

Our Guided Group trips offer the ultimate in convenience for motorcycle travelers seeking a "turn key" solution for an amazing riding experience. Our bi-lingual guides make sure the tour route is enjoyed to the fullest extent, while a support truck driver carries all the luggage, necessary tools, parts, etc. to make the trip a safely realized success. Plus, as an added bonus to all of these amazing features, riders on guided trips typically end up making new riding friends from around the world over the course of these expeditions! Each of our trip pages will list if there is a guided tour available or contact us to learn more about your options.

Dual Sport Motorcycle Adventures

Whether you've been inspired by the motorcycle trip stories of Ewan McGregor & Charley Boorman riding BMW bikes around the world, or your own adventurous spirit brought you RIDE Adventures, rest assured: You're not alone in the quest for the next great dual sport trip!

Especially if you're the type of rider who constantly has the urge to break away and ride somewhere outside of a regular riding routine; the greatest off-pavement routes still remaining can be enjoyed through our rental motorcycles and/or Guided Group Tours. Not sure where the "best" place is for your next Dual Sport ride? Part of the service we provide is to offer unbiased advice, based on your wishes for an incredible trip!

See the Many Great Dual Sport Motorcycle Options We Offer!

Pavement Trips

If your plans to "Ride the World" mean you'd prefer staying on the pavement than riding the dirt, then we have a great and growing list of options to help you complete your mission. Some of these tours may still include 1-5% non-paved surfaces such as driveways, hard-packed gravel roads, but they're still the types of trips that nearly every motorcycle rider can handle (be sure to check the trip description or inquire with us.) Some of the finest roads full of twisties and long, sweeping curves can be ridden thanks to the motorcycle rentals and guiding services we offer, so if you want to RIDE the best paved routes around the world, you've found the right service provider!

Check out our list of trips that focus on the greatest paved route options in each region.

Private Group

We welcome your Private Group to any of the locations shown on www.rideadv.com! Whereas all the tours with exact dates shown are essentially "open to the public," our Private Group Tours are customizable and can take place on the exact dates your group wishes. We'll need a bit of info on the front end to establish exactly what type of terrain, scenery, accommodations, and motorcycles you'll want to be riding, and from that, RIDE Adventures will create the perfect motorcycle trip package.

So if your Private Group wants specific trip features, formats, or dates, then Contact Us about organizing your Private Group adventure! !

Whether you're on a motorcycle or in a 4x4 truck or Jeep, there are plenty of RIDE Adventures to enjoy! The option to rent one of our 4x4's not only makes it possible to explore the incredible regions shown on our website, but if you've got friends wanting to explore by motorcycle, they'll surely appreciate having you drive along with a support truck. Carrying their luggage and acting as a safety-back up in remote regions can prove extremely valuable to motorcycle riders. No matter what, adventure travelers can be assured that we've designed the best routes possible for exploring each region, and customization is even possible in most cases.

All your 4x4 adventure travel plans start by Contacting Us to check on availability , so don't wait to secure your dates.

We're All Over the World

Each location you see on the RIDE Adventures website has been well-researched and ridden by our Staff members long before we began offering these as trip packages. Although it can be difficult to decide between an adventure ride through Peru, Patagonia , Baja , Europe , or Asia for your next great trip, our combined expertise in these areas will help you choose the right option to "scratch that international adventure itch." If you're on a mission to RIDE the world piece by piece over time, we already have the rental motorcycles , 4x4 trucks , and other vehicles in these locations to make it possible.

As we continue to explore more of the world, keep checking back with us as new opportunities become available through RIDE Adventures!

"Eric, I wanted to write a sincere thank you for our amazing experience with your two day training option right there in Bend Oregon on September 3rd and 4th. My brother Nick organized this trip. He owns his own KTM and rides often here in Western Colorado. His goal was to ride with us, his two brothers.

- Richard, we're glad if our Training Expedition in Oregon was a positive step forward in building your skillset for adventure riding, and look forward to seeing which bike you end up with : )

- David and Marina Belton enjoyed the variety of riding in Patagonia, from the tight, valley-lined roads to the wide open spaces on our "Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego & Ushuaia!" Self-Guided Motorcycle Trip Package. Come again, and thanks for sharing!

"W hat a fantastic trip. Lovely countries, great people, superb riding all facilitated by a very professional and friendly set up that you provided. Many thanks to all your support staff ahead of the adventure when all questions were responded to promptly and efficiently. I would not hesitate to recommend you to friends and will certainly use ride LLC again in the future.

-Eric Nijman from The Netherlands wrote these kind words on the heels of his Self-Guided, Truck Supported "Full Patagonia Adventure" motorcycle tour in early 2019. So glad you enjoyed, Eric, seems everyone who rides in Patagonia does : )

-Michael Potter and his wife, Helen must have enjoyed themselves, as so many of us do when riding and exploring the incredible land of Peru. They were part of our Guided Group "Machu Picchu Express" tour , and we look forward to riding with them again in the Andes, soon.

-Mark Stewart from Australia on the heels of a successful ride to Alaska with his friend Phil, and our Oregon-based motorcycle rentals . A pair of Africa Twin's, 2 experienced riders, the Pacific Northwest, British Columbia, Alberta, the Yukon, and all the moose, elk, bears, and other wildlife along the way, quite a journey a long time in the making. Just loved this picture as two voyagers were headed out of the shop that day. Come again, guys!

-Phill Whitford, thank you very much for your kind words about how your Self-Guided, Fly & DRIVE The Patagonia Experience trip package worked out! Come on back sometime and bring friends...we have motorcycles, too : )

" FYI, I got back to Uvalde Texas yesterday afternoon. It was a great trip, I would sum it up as successful. The hotels, restaurants, and bike you choose were the best. The route and scenery was unbelievable. The weather was a bigger obstacle than I expected as were some of the roads. Nothing really difficult but 2700 miles was a challenge. Did I tell you that I celebrated my 70th birthday during the ride?  Also I met lots of interesting people.  I’m headed to Colorado to ski in ten days. And then???

- Congratulations to Ed Carnes from Texas for celebrating his 70th year with a successful solo Self-Guided "Fly & RIDE Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego & Ushuaia" trip ! We sometimes wonder if some riders have read too much about the drama of Patagonia's conditions and are turned away as a result. Yes, winds and conditions can be tough sometimes, but Ed just showed us all how to do it: Be patient, keep at it, ride smart without showing off for your friends, and most careful, experienced dual sport riders can enjoy some of the world's best riding safely. This photo taken and recognized as the spot where RIDE Adventures was born by the simple thought " more people need to experience this ." Ed had a few clouds that day, but when that sun cracks and the waters turn bright blue ... oh what a site.

"Eric! We had a f___ing blast. We had a few WiFi-less days at the end or I would have written sooner. Yes- we hit a rabbit (or rather it hit us, pretty sure it was suicidal) in the road btw Perito Moreno and El Calafate. Shook us up for sure. As for mister rabbit- he exploded. The bike took it super well- he hit the crashbars which was lucky.sorry about any damage, looked purely cosmetic, but let me know! The bike itself was awesome- rey thinks the rear breaks might need to be replaced- it had enough brake pad to get us safely through the trip but the pads are pretty much toast by the end of our trip.

❤

- Congratulations Kendra and Rey for your marriage and honeymoon, and for choosing to spend that time riding the Self-Guided Fly & RIDE The Patagonia Experience! You were the first Riders of the season to complete this route, so congrats on the safe finish. As for the rabbit, sounds like he was too "rascally" : )

"My partner and I didn’t speak a bit of Spanish but we chose to do the 7 day self guided tour. I loved Colombia and its fantastic views. The people were friendly and the cities were full of history. Our point of contact, Ricardo, was awesome. He was incredibly helpful and friendly. He went above and beyond what we expected. He will be very successful in this business and you can’t go wrong with him on your side. The bikes were new and in great shape, absolutely perfect for the terrain. We had some problems but nothing we couldn’t deal with and it didn’t slow us down. It was planned for more off-road for us. We had mud, rocks, rain and landslides to deal with. It made it a true adventure!   I think you could ride the country for months and never ride the same road twice. WE WILL BE BACK!!!"

- Chris Coonshead and his buddy, David, seem to have discovered what Riders from around the world are talking about: Not only is Colombia perfectly safe to experience in person, but our Self-Guided "Fly & RIDE The Essential Colombia Adventure Ride" package makes it easy to have an experience like the one they had! Come on back, guys, the bikes and fun people of Colombia will be waiting : )

Column: Golf has a fractured landscape. Not even the majors can put it back together

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The grill room at a California municipal golf course had one TV showing LIV Golf in Las Vegas, another showing the PGA Tour in Phoenix. A half-dozen people shifted eyes watching both, the former with fewer commercials on a network known more for “Young Sheldon” reruns.

This is the current landscape in golf, and it figures to be that way for the rest of this year and probably well into the next one, if not longer.

Consider the immediate future.

Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler will be in Florida next week the same time Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau are in Saudi Arabia. At least there is an eight-hour difference in time zones, assuming everyone has The CW app.

Captain Joaquín Niemann, of Torque GC, first place individual champion, celebrates with the trophy after winning in a four-hole playoff during the final round of LIV Golf Mayakoba at El Camaleón Golf Course, Sunday, Feb. 4, 2024, in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. (Montana Pritchard/LIV Golf via AP)

For those who prefer to play the week before a major, LIV Golf will be on the Blue Monster at Doral ahead of the Masters and PGA Tour players will be in San Antonio. The week before the U.S. Open, LIV will be in Houston, the PGA Tour in Ohio for the Memorial.

All of which leads to the common refrain that all anyone wants is for the best players in golf to be on the same stage.

The only place for that is the majors, which always mattered more than all the other tournaments. Now the gap is getting larger.

The PGA Tour already has held three of its “signature events” with a $20 million purse, cold plunges and wild-caught seafood served in player dining. Nothing felt extraordinary about them. LIV Golf had a 59 and a playoff in the dark the first week, and a six-way tie for the lead late on the back nine the second week. The only noise sounded forced.

Golf has always had various starting lines depending on the level of interest. The most ardent fans tuned in for Kapalua and its magnificent ocean views for The Sentry to start the year. Torrey Pines is the first PGA Tour event on network television. Pebble Beach is the first weekend without the NFL (and more magnificent ocean views, even when the wind and rain cause waves to crash over the 18th fairway).

The Florida swing means the Masters is near. The Players Championship used to boast the strongest and deepest field in golf, a claim it can no longer make with 15 of the last 30 major champions (a total of nine players) now with LIV. At least it still has the island green.

That brings us to the Masters. What poetically is referred to as the annual rite of spring might just as well be called the start of the golf season.

“Yes and no,” Xander Schauffele said.

“If you just love golf, you should have no problem watching the LIV circuit on CW, and you should have no problem turning on CBS or Golf Channel when you watch the PGA Tour, LPGA, whatever you want,” he said.

And now for the “no.”

“If you want to see all the best in the world playing each other, then that would be your first tournament to watch,” Schauffele said. “But even then, there are guys who should be at Augusta, arguably, based on how good they are. But they made the choice, rolled the dice and they’re not going to be there unless they win something crazy.”

Winning “something crazy” ostensibly would be a major, which comes with a five-year exemption to the other majors.

Still to be determined is whether Augusta National hands out special invitations and to whom, and whether the PGA of America will consider players from other tours, as Kerry Haigh, the chief championships officer, said last year it would.

Otherwise, it won’t be long before the majors don’t have all the best.

DeChambeau has only two years left at the Masters before his exemption from winning the U.S. Open runs out. Cameron Smith has an exemption through 2027.

Patrick Reed has dropped to No. 100 in the world ranking — he never did reach No. 5, after declaring himself one of the top five players in golf in 2014 when he was at No. 20. Depending on what happens in the Masters, he will be well outside the top 100 for PGA Championship consideration.

The five-year exemptions for DeChambeau and Dustin Johnson at the PGA end after next year.

The Official World Golf Ranking hasn’t found a way to fairly include LIV Golf in its system, and LIV Golf hasn’t provided a reason with such a closed shop.

Is the OWGR fair? Yes. Accurate? Not so much. Johnson currently is at No. 238, right behind Ockie Strydom and Troy Merritt. But remember, the majors use the world ranking to determine their fields, and the heads of those organizations were the ones voting not to include LIV.

And so it’s on to Mexico and Florida and Texas for the PGA Tour, to Saudi Arabia and Hong Kong for LIV, and everyone meets up at Augusta National in April.

Rory McIlroy said he thought a signature event would feel cheapened because not all the best players — Jon Rahm, Johnson, Koepka — were there.

It was a peculiar opinion because that doesn’t always happen, anyway. Only five of the top 10 were playing when McIlroy won the Canadian Open in 2022. And even in a limited-field event like the CJ Cup in Las Vegas he won in the fall of 2021, Rahm, DeChambeau and Patrick Cantlay sat that one out. All were among the top 10 in the world.

All the best are found only at the majors. At least for now.

SELF-GUIDED HALEAKALA DOWNHILL BIKE TOUR

Experience Biking on Maui with the best Haleakala downhill bike tour company! We are the only bike tour operator to hold USA Cycling and BICP Bike instructor certifications and safety practices. Enjoy an exhilarating and picturesque self-paced ride using our custom downhill bikes and gear. Over the past 20+ years, we’ve refined our unique downhill tour itinerary to highlight the best aspects of the downhill experience.

Maui's Volcano Bike Ride - Maui Sunriders

About OUR Haleakala  Downhill Bike Tour

Over our 20+ years facilitating Haleakala downhill bike tours on Maui, we’ve confidently refined our unique itinerary to be what we offer today.

Meet at our Bike Shop at 8:45am on the North Shore of Maui in the surf town of Paia. Our mid-morning start allows you to sleep in on your vacation and enjoy our Bike Tour at a time when roads are most quiet – after the Haleakala Sunrise vehicle traffic and local commuter traffic have come and gone. Temperatures upcountry are warmer, and stores and restaurants are more likely to be open along the bike route. You also save up to $125/person in comparison with a Sunrise Haleakala bike tour!

Once at our bike shop, we supply you with your helmet, rain/wind jacket & pants, gloves, backpack, bike lock & map. After a safety briefing, enjoy a guided van tour as you’re driven up Haleakala on the same route you’ll then bike down. Your expert guide will share some local history, points of interest, and suggestions for places to visit (and eat!) on your ride.

The staging area for our self-guided Maui Haleakala bike tour is at 6,500 ft – where all Haleakala downhill bike tour operators on Maui begin their rides. No bike tour operator is allowed to operate inside the Haleakala National Park.

At your own pace, first cruise down the spectacularly scenic 6.5-mile stretch of road through expansive upcountry ranch land, soaking in views of central Maui, the West Maui mountains and the surrounding islands . Next, hop back in the van for a brief shuttle ride to bypass the most congested stretch of Haleakala highway.

Maui has grown a lot since these tours began in 1983. The increase of people that now live upcountry has impacted the safety of all riders through a section of highway that has little to no shoulder due to erosion in many spots and with cars reaching 40+ mph. The County of Maui has passed a New Law regulating ALL commercial bicycle tour operators on Maui removing this small section from any operators routes. This is a safer route for all cyclists.

After the shuttle bypassing this section, the 2nd portion of the bike ride allows you to hop back on your bikes and ride into the Paniolo town of Makawao. At your leisure, explore all that Makawao has to offer: great eats, art galleries, boutique shops, and general stores. When you’re ready, saddle up for a final 7-mile bike ride back down to our Paia shop at 1pm which allows you to bypass the local school traffic, and enjoy the original Haleakala descent right back to where you started! This is the original Haleakala downhill route. enjoyed the tour and the feedback has been positive.

We provide a supported sweep van behind all bikers and roadside assistance for all of our Maui bike tours. Our team is always nearby in the van or in the town of Makawao for any assistance you may need.

Haleakala Downhill FAQs

What does the haleakala volcano bike ride tour include.

Our Maui bike tours of Haleakala include all the biking equipment needed for the ride (Redline Monocog Mountain Bike with disc brakes and 29″ wheel, helmet, rain/wind gear, gloves, backpack, map, bike lock), as well as a narrated van tour on the drive up from sea level to our staging area at 6,500′, just before the entrance of the National Park.

On the narrated van tour, your driver will familiarize you with the bike route back down the slopes of Haleakala. Our expert tour guides will explain the history of upcountry Maui, points of interest, Hawaiian culture, and geological features on the route.

Before you leave for the Haleakala bike tour, you will have a safety briefing explaining area guidelines and safety tips for the bike tour. We provide everything you need to have a safe, fun, and relaxing Maui volcano bike ride.

HOW LONG IS THE HALEAKALA BIKE RIDE & How Long does it take?

The bike ride down Haleakala starts at 6,500 ft, and is 98% downhill at an average gradient of 5-6%. You are riding on paved country roads with active traffic, and for most of the ride, there is no shoulder or bike lane.

After a narrated 45-minute drive up from our shop at sea level, you’re usually beginning to bike around 10:30am.

On our self-paced bike ride, you can take your time and stop as often or as little as you’d like. On average, with stops, most people return between 12:30pm – 1:30pm.

1:30pm is the latest that you can return the bikes to our shop!

WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR ON THE BIKE TOUR?

Closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended. For the Haleakala Downhill, most folks are fine in just shorts and a t-shirt. We provide a rain jacket/windbreaker that functions as an added layer, as the windchill can be chilly at our staging area. Full-finger gloves are included in the tour, as well.

On a typical day at 6,500′ around 10:30am (the time and elevation at which you’ll start the ride), temps are usually in the low to mid-60s. We also provide a backpack to put any layers or purchases in on the way down. If the weather looks overcast, windy, or rainy we recommend wearing more removable layers such as pants or a sweatshirt. In these conditions, temps can be in the mid to high 50’s.

WHAT IS THE MINIMUM AGE TO DO THE HALEAKALA DOWNHILL?

The minimum age to participate in this bike ride is 15 years old. The minimum height requirement to fit the bike is 4’11”. Intermediate bike experience is required, as is experience using disc brakes on a bike.

The ride requires maturity; you will ride on paved roads with traffic, and most of the ride does not have a shoulder or bike lane. We trust the judgment of the parent or guardian in determining a minor’s skill level.

DO I NEED TO BE IN SHAPE TO DO THIS RIDE?

The nature of this ride doesn’t require you to necessarily be in shape nor does weight matter as long as you aren’t over the bike manufacturer’s weight limit of 300lbs. This ride is quite easy and you BARELY even pedal! It’s 98% all downhill.

However, riders must be CONFIDENT and COMFORTABLE riding a bike. This ride isn’t for beginners, and not safe if you haven’t been on a bike in years.

If it’s been a while, we recommend getting out on a bike and practicing before you do this ride. While it’s not a physically challenging ride, you are descending at 25+ mph at an average grade of 5-6%. This requires bike handling skills.

You will be sharing the country roads with vehicles and riding a bike down the sloping switchbacks of Haleakala! It’s truly a fun and easy ride AS LONG as you are a confident cyclist and comfortable riding a bike!

ARE THERE ANY RESTRICTIONS?

There are just a few restrictions for your safety:

  • Riders must be confident and experienced at riding a bike with disc brakes
  • Minimum Age 15 Years old.
  • Minimum height requirement to fit the bike is 4’11”.
  • Intermediate bike experience is required , as is experience using disc brakes on a bike.
  • Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
  • Must not be Pregnant

IS THERE A CHANCE OF GETTING LOST?

On our Maui downhill bike tour, it is easy to stay on route, so long as you are paying attention.

On the narrated drive up to our staging area, your driver will point out any turns you have to make. You will also receive a detailed map with your biking equipment. The map also has a QR code that you can scan to pull up a live map showing where you are in relation to the bike route.

We provide roadside assistance. In the event that you do miss a turn, we can help you get back on track with directions over the phone. In most cases, you can backtrack a short distance to get back on route. In the worst-case situation, our guides can come pick you up and drop you off back on the route, or bring you back to the shop.

ARRIVING ON CRUISE SHIP, CAN WE MAKE IT IN TIME?

Guests arriving on a cruise ship at the Kahului harbor come do our bike ride all the time! You arrive at the dock at 8am and our shop is about 15 minutes from the Harbor. Taxi or Uber is your best bet and costs around $20 each way. Check-in time is 8:45am and we are open at 8:30am.

CAN WE BIKE & CATCH A DEPARTING FLIGHT ON THE SAME DAY?

You will return to our shop in Paia by 1:30pm at the latest. From our shop, it’s about a 15 minute drive to the airport. Security lines do tend to be longer here on Maui than at mainland airports, so do factor that into your day’s timeline, but yes, you can fly the same afternoon as your bike tour!

You are more than welcome to store your luggage at our shop, customers do so all the time and we are more than happy to keep it secure until you return.

DO YOU OFFER GUIDED TOURS? WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SELF-PACED TOUR?

On a typical guided tour, bikers ride in a group of about 10 at the pace of the person in the front of the group. Individual bikers cannot choose their own stops and thus are not able to stop and visit towns along the way. This type of tour is ideal for those that prefer a more structured experience, or for those without a rental car and thus in need of transportation to and from their hotel.

At Maui Sunriders, we recognized the need to give visitors an alternative to the old-style Haleakala bike tours, that resembled a more familiar type of cycling done at home with family and friends.

In 2001, we started a self-paced Maui bike tour where people could ride down Haleakala without the cumbersome style of riding in a group and with the freedom to stop and go at a more relaxed pace. This way, you also avoid the unpopular hindrance to the local traffic that larger groups create. We eliminated hotel pick-up and drop-off where you spend more time driving around in a van than on the actual bike ride. By riding back to our shop in Paia at the end of the tour instead of being transported back to the hotel, you‘ll be able to explore the North Shore of the island and get to see a little more of the charming small towns in Maui. Whether you are driving from the south side of the island or the west, directions to our shop are as simple as three right turns and you’re at our front door.

We provide roadside assistance for all of our Maui bike tours. Just remember to bring your cell phone to call us at any time for assistance.

We do not offer guided tours for a few specific reasons. Guided groups can be problematic to local traffic making it difficult for drivers to pass. The tail vans block traffic and make it difficult for local and tourist drivers on the road, potentially making drivers more upset and aggressive. It can also be difficult for varying abilities to either keep up or slow down to stay with the whole group. Riding in a big guided group can also be dangerous if a rider directly in front of you suddenly brakes.

We only provide self-guided Haleakala Downhill tours and we make sure every rider we send down the road is capable to bike down safely. If we determine anyone can’t safely do this bike ride we may have to pull you from the ride. For this reason, if you are unsure of your riding ability and haven’t been on a bike in years, we recommend going with another operator that provides guided tours.

DO YOU OFFER HOTEL PICKUPS?

We eliminated hotel pick-up and drop-off where you spend more time driving around in a van than on the actual bike ride. Since our tour is self-guided, everyone finishes the ride at different times. By riding back to our shop in Paia, you‘ll be able to explore the North Shore of the island and get to see a little more of the charming small towns in Maui. All our guests enjoy the freedom of having their car and exploring Paia, North Shore beaches and waterfalls or even going up to the summit for sunset after the ride.Whether you are driving from the south side of the island or the west, directions to our shop are as simple as three right turns and you’re at our front door. By eliminating hotel pick up and drop offs, this also helps to keep our rate the lowest on the island.

DO YOU PROVIDE ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE?

Yes, of course. Biking down Haleakala at your own pace allows you to experience the ride at a speed that feels comfortable to you, as well as allowing you to stop and go as you please without getting stuck in a group or to having to keep up with someone else’s pace. However, you do not have to sacrifice your peace of mind. If you need assistance with anything at any time along the Maui bike tour, we will always be available. Just remember to bring a cell phone with you to call us for assistance.

In the event that you miss a turn, you can always call your guide. We can help you get back on track with directions over the phone. In most cases, you can backtrack a short distance to get back on route. In the worst-case situation, our guide can come pick you up and drop you off on the route or bring you back to the shop.

COULD THE RIDE BE DANGEROUS?

Like any other outdoor activity, there are inherent risks. In order to minimize those risks, you MUST be comfortable riding a bike, be able to use hand brakes, and be able to stay focused throughout the ride. You are coming down country roads and sharing the road with cars.

If you are a beginner cyclist or haven’t been on a bike in years, this ride likely is not the right fit for you. We recommend practicing on a bike before you do this ride. While it’s not a physically challenging ride, you are descending at 25+mph at an average grade of 5-6%. You will be sharing the country roads with vehicles and riding the bike down the sloping switchbacks of Haleakala!

It’s truly a fun and easy ride AS LONG as you are a confident cyclist and comfortable riding a bike on the road!

At Maui Sunriders, we are committed to keeping you safe. We take great effort to provide you with the safety awareness, guidelines, and briefings you need to have a safe and fun trip. However, ultimately you are in control of the bike. Remember this is a Maui biking tour, not a race. If you decide to bike down Haleakala at 50 mph, then you can make the bike ride very dangerous. And, of course, this is not the place to learn how to ride a bike, so you need to be experienced at riding a bike. Although it is not a difficult ride, you should be a competent, confident rider.

ARE THERE DAYS THAT ARE LESS BUSY?

As far as riders go, Mondays & Tuesdays are usually the busiest. However, once you start riding, everyone spreads out and it’s not a problem because everyone is going at their own pace and stopping at different locations.

The quietest traffic days are Saturday & Sunday because they are travel days & locals aren’t driving to school/work. However, on Sundays, it’s more likely that some of the businesses in Makawao may be closed.

HOW MUCH SHOULD WE TIP OUR GUIDE / DRIVER?

Tipping is greatly appreciated. Our guides provide you with a fun and informative drive up, as well as make sure everyone is coming down the volcano safely. They work hard daily loading/unloading your bikes, assuring a proper bike fit, as well as the behind the scene efforts making sure your bikes are in top working order and sanitizing all your gear daily.

Our tour guides do their best to ensure that your experience is both informative and memorable. As in any other service industry, tipping is subject to the level and quality of the service provided. (suggested gratuity is 18% however, a gratuity of any amount is always appreciated)

CAN WE RIDE IF ITS RAINY OR WINDY?

We do ride rain or shine. Maui is a tropical climate and it can rain any day of the year. For this reason, we provide rain/wind breaker jacket & pants, as well as bike gloves every day of the year.  As long as you are confident and comfortable riding bikes, it can be safe riding in the rain and wind. We hope that our riders have all been on bikes recently (like within a couple years minimum.) If it’s unsafe for anyone, it would be those who haven’t been on a bike in a long time….and are a bit wobbly on a bike to begin with!

When there is rain and wind, it is ok to ride as long as you slow down and anticipate the rain and wind gusts at all times. The upper portion of the ride can be windier as it is more exposed with less trees and the lower portion can be more protected, aside from the occasional gusts coming around a corner.  If for some reason the wind or rain is too much for you at the start we can always put you on the bikes at a lower elevation where it is less exposed.  If you feel nervous about it, contact us to reschedule. We have a 48 hour change policy so if you give us notice we are happy to move the reservation for you. Feel free to contact us any time if necessary.

We do occasionally cancel a tour if we receive Warnings from the National Weather system and we determine it to be unsafe to ride.  Due to our unpredictable and fast changing weather systems on Maui, we can only cancel a tour the morning of the ride. The forecast can change the day before or the morning of, as tropical weather is spontaneous! We aim to make the final decision by 7:30am daily. In the event that we cancel a ride, you can reschedule for another day, or if you can’t book any other day we also offer a full refund.

DO WE SEE THE CRATER / SUMMIT ON THE HALEAKALA BIKE RIDE?

Tours that take you into the national park to see the crater/summit range from $220-$240 per person. Our tour is more than 1/2 the price per person, due to the fact that we don’t enter the National Park. Tours that bring you into the park, will then drive you back down to the same place we begin our bike ride. No tour operator can allow you to bike inside the National Park.

We suggest going into the National Park on your own for a more personal experience at only $30 per vehicle. There are over 35 miles of hiking that you can do inside the park so it may be worthwhile to separate your activities to really take in the park and make it an experience of its own.

We still offer the longest downhill on Haleakalā and we’re the only SELF-GUIDED company that bikes all the way to the sea, with the least amount of climbing compared to some other companies. All at your own pace, stopping wherever you’d like on the way down.

Most of our guests visit the park another day or go after the bike ride to watch sunset. A lot of locals say the sunset is just as beautiful (if not MORE) and much warmer, less people (no reservation needed) and so much less of an ordeal, like waking up at 2am on vacation. With that our favorite recommendation is to join us at 9am for your downhill ride. Enjoy Paia and the beaches after the ride, maybe have an early dinner in town and then drive up and catch sunset. You can enter the park an hour early and explore the park, hike around a bit and see it more than you would at sunrise. Bring a towel, bottle of wine or beverage of choice, Hawaiian snacks and see the spectacular sunset! It’s warmer at the crater than it will be waiting for the sun to rise. You can also look up the volcano and see if the weather is to your liking to view sunset, where as with sunrise it is all or nothing at 3am!

Some guests opt to do sunrise on their own & then join us for a Downhill Bike Ride. Since our tour starts at 9am, guests that still want to experience sunrise on their own and save a bundle of money, go up on their own and then drive down immediately following sunrise. You will need a reservation with the National Park as mentioned above, it is very crowded so get there early and you do need to wake up around 2am to get up the volcano in time. It takes about an hour and a half to come down and reach our shop in Paia, plan to leave the summit at the latest by 7:30am. Then you can park your car for the day and we will shuttle you up for your bike ride. When you finish your ride your car will be parked in Paia ready to explore the North Shore.

Keep in mind all the sunrises and sunsets are 50/50 that you will have incredible views due to our tropical weather and clouds that come through. At least for sunset you can decide if it’s worth it but for sunrise it’s all or nothing, due to your reservation and its dark and cold so you can’t totally see the weather. Remember sometimes you see clouds above but you often times break through the clouds and travel a couple 1000’ feet above the clouds. It varies from day-to-day!

CAN WE BIKE UP INTO THE NATIONAL PARK?

Yes, you can bike into the park but there are a couple important things to note:

First, the bikes that we provide you are downhill-specific. They aren’t geared to climb. So while you can go up, it will be very difficult with these bikes.

Second, it’s important to know that you will have to pay to enter the park. The bike entrance fee is $15 per bike. The National Park accepts credit cards only.

Third, note that once you enter – it doesn’t look that much different from where you just came from or what you will experience in the first 30 minutes of your downhill ride. From the gate entrance it is an additional 12 miles and 3500′ climb to reach the summit. On a geared bike and being an avid cyclists, that could take about 2 hours to reach the top. You have to gain a couple 1000′ feet to start to see the change in geology and what some consider it to look like mars.

DO YOU OFFER HALEAKALA SUNRISE TOURS?

We used to offer the sunrise tour for almost 18 years however, as of 2019 we are no longer partnering with the National Park and we have concluded our sunrise tours. The prices have gone way up & we don’t feel it is the best value and nor safest experience to pass on to our customers. To book a sunrise bike tour with any operator these days will cost you about $220-240 per person! We share with our guests the option join us for a 9am self-guided bike ride for more than 1/2 the price less. Most of our guests opt for sunset after their Downhill Bike Ride on your own.

Sunset is just as beautiful (if not MORE) and much warmer, less people (no reservation needed) and so much less of an ordeal, like waking up at 2am on vacation.

Furthermore, when you do the sunrise downhill option, it’s sorta confusing because you have to get back in the shuttle van and drive down to 6500 ft’ where all bike tours are Permitted to start and that is where we begin our ride…(right outside the National Park entrance.) So you don’t get to bike down from the summit. We start our tour later in the day so that you have time to catch the sunrise if you wish and to prevent biking with all the sunrise traffic coming down the mountain as well as local rush hour and for some that can be a little unnerving. With our ride beginning later, there are far less cars on the road which makes it safer and much more comfortable cruise down the mountain. Lastly, most of the shops & restaurants that you get to explore on our self-guided tour will be closed in the morning during the sunrise rides.

Some guests opt to do sunrise on their own & then join us for a Downhill Bike Ride. Since our tour starts at 9am, guests that still want to experience sunrise on their own and save a bundle of money, go up on their own and then drive down immediately following sunrise. The entry fee is $30 per car and a $1.50 online reservation fee through the National Park website.   (book ahead!)   For 2 people you will already save $240 that you could use to go out for a great dinner!

You will need a reservation (they can be almost impossible to attain!!!) with the National Park as mentioned above, it is very crowded so get there early and you do need to wake up around 2am to get up the volcano in time.

Remember sometimes you see clouds above but you often times break through the clouds and travel a couple 1000’ feet above the clouds. It varies from day-to-day!

HOW DID BIKING DOWN HALEAKALA START?

In 1983, “Cruiser Bob” the originator of the “Maui Volcano Bike Tour” created what is today one of the most popular Maui activities. Bob’s Haleakala bike tour became an instant success story. It grew rapidly with thousands of visitors a year riding down the volcano. Due to his success, many other companies were formed that used Bob’s biking tour as a model. A few of them are still here, while Bob moved on to other biking adventures. Some claim to be the “original,” but this fame belongs rightly only to Cruiser Bob.

BIKE DOWN HALEAKALA REVIEWS

"BEST EXPERIENCE HANDS DOWN ! I highly recommend this company and I truly recommend the tour guide free experience. Which is what this company offers. It's such an easy ride down sloping 99% of the time so gravity does the work, not you. Anyone can truly do this, Whether you are in shape or not, don't be scared it's doable. Also the tour free experience allows you to enjoy the towns, the farms, and make as many photo stops as you'd like. The driver explains the entire route on the way up, you go in a van. So there's NO WAY to get lost if you pay attention while the driver is explaining the do's and dont's. Bring cash so you can pay at the shops and tip the amazing drivers. They even stored our luggage for us! Very warm and inviting business. I will definitely do this again with this same company."

"I’ve done the ride with a few companies, and this was the best experience by a stretch, and that’s saying something because we keep coming back because it’s always been a great experience. The price is right. Our guide up the mountain was informative, funny, personable, and helpful. The equipment was a game changer when compared to the other companies— it’s top notch and very well kept. In short, you can’t go wrong with this crew."

You will have a hard time finding a better staff in all of Maui! The shop is clean, bikes are in perfect shape, all equipment is well maintained! The owners are so friendly and helpful, our driver was extremely knowledgeable and funny, making the downhill ride our favorite thing we have done this trip! Cannot say enough good things!

"This is definitely the company to use when biking down Haleakala! Other companies have their employee at the front and back of the line and you "follow the leader" down the mtn, which is not only dangerous, but boring!! You're on THEIR time. With Maui sunriders, YOU set the pace, YOU CHOOSE to stop when and where..it's great!!!! We had plenty of time to enjoy the ride and take pictures. As a party of 7 (a grandma, grandpa, mom, dad and 3 teen /adult children, we all loved it and would definitely recommend Maui Sunriders!!!"

Let's get ready to Worcester Rumble — Professional Bull Riders tour comes to DCU Center

riders tour shop

When Hunter Ball is at the DCU Center on Feb. 24 and 25, at least a couple of 2,000 pound bulls will be trying to throw something off their backs.

Namely, Hunter Ball — 5' 7'', 140 pounds.

But Ball, 24, didn't seem too worried about the prospect when speaking on the phone recently. "When the bull starts bucking on you, you get excited ... It's a lot of fun," he said.

That's one of the reasons Ball is a professional bull rider, one of about 40 who will be at the DCU Center for the "Worcester Rumble," also known as   PBR’s (Professional Bull Riders) Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour,  at 7 p.m. Feb. 24 and 2 p.m. Feb. 25.

The event will showcase what has been called the ultimate showdown of man vs. beast in one of the most exciting live sporting events to witness.

"The adrenaline gets going. Especially when you do it right, accomplish what you set out to do, it's a great feeling," Ball said.

During the course of trying to ride a 2,000 pound bull, you can't take the bull by the horns. The rider has only a braided rope to hold on to with one hand, while the other hand has to stay in the air. "We're not supposed to touch the bull or ourselves," Ball said. As judges award points for different stylistic considerations, the rider has to stay on a bull for at least eight seconds. The rider wants a raging bull as opposed to a sleepy one. Among the things judges are looking for is "how high the bull jumps and kicks," Ball said.

Bull riding has Velocity in Worcester

Worcester audiences have taken to the Worcester Rumble, and the Feb. 24 and 25 event will mark the eighth time the Velocity Tour has travelled to DCU Center. Organizers said that following the "overwhelming enthusiasm and demand for PBR Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour events in Worcester, including single-day sold out shows the past four years, the organization expanded the competition to be two days in February 2024. PBR Worcester will be met with added significance as the PBR’s lone event in Massachusetts during the 2024 individual season."

PBR is celebrating its 31st anniversary since 20 cowboys broke away from the traditional rodeo with the belief that bull riding could be a standalone sport. Since their trailblazing initiative, the PBR has grown into a global phenomenon.

'It's gonna be a good show'

There are three PBR series touring in in the U.S. — Unleash the Beast, Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour and Touring Pro Division. Riders on the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour are competing for points that can get them to the top level Unleash the Beast tour. The 2024 PBR World Finals will begin in Fort Worth at Dickies Arena, on May 10-13, for Eliminations, featuring the Top 40 riders from the Unleash The Beast standings, joined by the five invited riders advancing via the Velocity Tour Finals.

At the time of being interviewed, Ball had logged four Top-10 finishes on the Velocity Tour so far in the early stages of the 2024 season, while also being invited to appear at two premier Unleash The Beast events.

Ahead of coming to the DCU Center for the first time in his riding career, the easy-going sounding but tough-riding Ball said "I'm very excited. I've been having a great year. It's gonna be a good show."

The 40 competitors will vie for points, each trying to stay atop a bull in initial rounds on Feb. 24 and 25. The top 10 or 12 point-getters then will head into a short-round, third bill on Feb. 25 that will determine the event winner.

Ball's goal is to end the 2024 season in the Top Ten riders on the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour which would promote him to Unleash the Beast. He was currently 13th.

"I'm trying not to look at it too much," he said of the standings.

Ball is from rural Carsonville, Michigan, and his interest in bull riding dates to when he was seven-years-old and would climb aboard beef calves at his grandfather's farm. "My grandpa had a cattle ranch. I was always around the horses and cattle," he said.

He rode at county fairs, and then Nathan Muxlow of the nearby Muxlow Cattle Company, who has an associated training school for bull riding, gave Ball some valuable training working from riding beef calves to bulls. "He helped me a lot," Ball said.

Ball advanced to being a college competitor while he was a student athlete at Fort Scott Community College in Fort Scott, Kansas, and made the College National Finals Rodeo.

Bull riding got him "a college degree and college rodeos. It's done a lot for me," Ball said.

He's been a PBR rider "going for about four years," starting in the Touring Pro Division.

Ball said he's single and can see himself riding until he's about 31 or 32. "I love being with my buddies, traveling the country."

Bull riding can be dangerous, of course, and one time Ball said he "broke my jaw pretty bad and busted some teeth out." Other than that, however, he's stayed fairly injury free.

"I'm pretty grateful for staying pretty healthy. Nothing too bad," he said.

Katie Maloney & Ariana Madix Give Full Tour of ‘Something About Her’ Sandwich Shop: VIDEO

K atie Maloney and Ariana Madix gave fans a big update on Something About Her, the sandwich shop the“Vanderpump Rules” co-stars have been working on opening for more than two years.

In a video posted by BravoTV.com, the business partners took fans inside their sandwich café, which is located on N. Robertson Blvd, in West Hollywood, California.

Something About Her is still not open to the public, but the interior appears ready to go.

Here’s what you need to know:

Katie Maloney & Ariana Madix Went for a Nancy Meyers Movie Vibe

In the video tour, Maloney and Madix showed off the full interior of their cozy SoCal sandwich shop. The camera panned across the room to give fans a look at décor that included elaborate artwork, vintage chandeliers, and bench seats loaded with fluffy pillows. Other shelving housed ceramic pitchers and other décor.

“This is the spot,” Maloney said. “It was designed by John Hutman who is Nancy Meyers’ production designer. Huge flex for us. That was the whole inspiration of this sandwich job in general. We wanted to feel like main character energy in a rom-com.”

Madix added, “But we also wanted it to feel like us. We wanted to feel very California yet European.”

Maloney previously talked about working with Hutman, who worked as the production designer on Meyers’ movies “The Holiday,” “It’s Complicated,” and more, to achieve her vision for Something About Her.

“This whole Something About Her, and the vision behind that, was wanting it to be romanticized lunch, à la rom-coms,” she said during a 2023 appearance on  the “Everything Iconic with Danny Pellegrino” podcast. “I want to live in a Nancy Meyers movie. So, when we were talking about what this place looks like and feels like, I’m like, ‘Well, who does Nancy Meyers’ movies?”

She also described Hutman as “lovely and amazing and talented” and someone who completely “gets” her vision.

During their tour, Maloney and Madix sat in a window seat nook. They also showed off glass display shelves for croissants, muffins, and cookies , as well as an area for wine and teas. “No coffee because there’s a wonderful coffee shop right next store, Maloney said. “And we love them,” Madix added.

Of the front register area, Madix said, “This is where we’ll be taking your orders, We’re going to be cashless.”

“So if you come and rob us  they have we don’t have any cash so don’t bother.” Maloney quipped.

The two also teased that “hopefully” next month they’ll have some food in the place.

There is Still No Opening Date For Something About Her

Maloney and Madix have been finalizing details for the sandwich shop for months, but have been hit with multiple setbacks, including issues with permits.

In December 2023, Madix told BravoTV.com the shop remained “in red tape limbo” as she and Maloney waited for inspections to be completed. Still, she hinted that everything else is ready to go.

“We have an incredible menu. Amazing staff. Very excited people ready to go. So we’re just kind of waiting on that thumbs up, that stamp of approval,” the “Vanderpump Rules” star said at the time.

Power Rankings: Mexico Open at Vidanta

Power Rankings

Change Text Size

All members of the PGA TOUR always have something to chase, for as long as there’s a tournament scheduled, achievements and promises are waiting at its conclusion. But it’s special to travel to the Pacific Coast of Mexico as winter retains its grip in the United States on the back nine of February. Indeed, it’s nice work if you can get it.

The Mexico Open at Vidanta is poised for its third edition this week. Continue reading beneath the projected contenders for what’s changed, why and more.

Vidanta Vallarta hosts the eighth PGA TOUR event of the season. Its Greg Norman Signature Course is situated in the Mexican state of Nayarit and surrounded in part by its border with Jalisco. It’s about equal to the latitudes of both stops on the Aloha Swing that opened the season. The weather forecast alone confirms this. Daytime highs in the upper 80s will dominate. Some clouds might pass over but it won’t rain. Winds will be light.

When this tournament was positioned on the last weekend of April, it hosted 144 golfers. Daylight hours aren’t as plentiful in February, so this year’s field is 132 deep, but all fully exempt members who committed are scheduled to compete. Those that do will be tested by a fun par 71 with five par 3s. It can stretch to 7,456 yards. Courses never play to capacity but that possibility contributes to the expectation for longer hitters to hog the leaderboard.

Despite 106 bunkers scattered across the property, fairways are welcoming. Guys who split as many as eight (of 13) per round are losing accuracy to the field. Meanwhile, generous targets will yield greens-in-regulation results of about two-thirds per round on average, but Vidanta Vallarta’s proximity-to-the-hole measurements have ranked a respective longest and second-longest in its first two spins. (ShotLink is used in this tournament.)

That apparent ease is counterbalanced by three of the hardest 50 holes played during all of the 2022-23 season. Yet, for all that keeps a professional humbled, last year’s field averaged 70.097, so red numbers are commonplace.

The lushest rough is up a little more again this year. Now at 2½ inches, it should help defend scoring enough to at least increase the premium of course management. However, the biggest change is that the greens will be rolling to only 11 feet on the Stimpmeter. This is shorter by one foot due primarily to the earlier date on the calendar. Platinum paspalum covers the course.
