Bimini Cruise Port

Bimini Bahamas cruise port

The Resorts World Bimini Cruise Port is a new cruise port that accommodates the world’s largest cruise ships and vessels of all sizes. The cruise port is within walking distance of the Resorts World Bimini Complex.

Since this is a newer cruise port, the pier is charming and less developed. Unlike other Caribbean cruise destinations, which house popular cruise port shops including Diamonds International, this isn’t the case with Bimini. Instead, there are local shops to purchase souvenirs and crafts.

Bimini cruise port can accommodate two cruise ships at a time, making this island a nice change from busier ports of call. Cruise passengers can take a taxi, a shuttle service, or use a tour guide to visit the island.

What are the most popular activities on Bimini?

What cruise ships can dock at the bimini pier, when is the best time of year to visit bimini island, how to get from south bimini to north bimini, is bimini a private island for virgin voyages, does bimini, bahamas have an airport, what airlines fly to bimini, bahamas, do you need a passport when traveling to bimini, are prices in bimini expensive, where to stay in bimini, bahamas, what’s the weather like in bimini.

Bimini is 54 miles from Miami

The small island chain is about 54 miles directly east of Miami, Florida .  It’s also the western most district of the Bahamas. Mainland United States is actually closer to Bimini than the capital city, Nassau, which is over 130 miles to the southeast .

The proximity to the US allows for some to make day trips to the islands by way of high speed ferries. More on that later.

Bimini is only about 9 square miles in totality. Two main islands make up most of the island chain: North Bimini and South Bimini.

North Bimini is 7 miles long and only about 750 feet wide.  South Bimini is about 3 miles long and about half a mile wide.

The water around the islands is very shallow at 20-30 feet in most places. To the west, between Miami and Bimini the Gulf Stream flows northward through water 6,000 feet deep, and this brings a variety of fish to the area.

There’s a reason this island of the Bahamas is so popular for sport fishing. The marine life is diverse around Bimini.

This small island has a rich history waiting to be explored. From its early days as a haven for pirates to its current status as an up-and-coming paradise, Bimini is sure to amaze you with its beauty and culture.

Known by locals as “ The Gateway to the Bahamas ,” Bimini was first settled by indigenous Lucayan people and still retains its Lucayan name “Bimini” which means “small islands” .

The island originally was attractive mainly due to its plentiful fish population and peaceful atmosphere – traits which still define Bimini today.

A world-famous vacation spot for vacationers, the island earned its fame through the contributions of journalist and author Ernest Hemingway .

Hemingway’s many accomplishments, including the two novels “Old Man and the Sea” and “Islands in the Stream,” were inspired by his visits to Bimini .

Bimini is also known as the Big Fish Fishing Capital of the World because it has some of the greatest ocean fishing in the world.

gateway to the bahamas, Bimini islands

On July 4th, 2021 Bimini welcomed its first cruise ship into the newly finished Resorts World Bimini Cruise Port , the official name for the cruise port on North Bimini island.

The single-pier port was developed by Resorts World Bimini.  It is just one of three ports in the Bahamas that is situated on a non-private island, along with Freeport and Nassau.

With a population of only about 2,000 full time residents, Bimini Bahamas is an exotic destination not yet overrun by tourism and commercialism. You won’t find a Diamonds International in this vacation spot. Beaches are clean and open.

Quiet streets have more golf carts and bicycles than actual cars . And with only one cruise ship docked at the pier at one time, the cruise passenger population is at least slightly limited.

There are no bridges between North and South Bimini . However, there are ferries that will take you back and forth so you can explore some of the activities on our list below.

I also recommend renting a golf cart for easy transportation on your own. It costs $60 for the entire day and travel on the island is very laid back and simple. Just remember to drive on the left hand side of the road. Queens Highway is the main road through North Bimini.

Most cruise lines offer an excursion to Resorts World Bimini which has a casino and beach club. The resort provides the free tram service to the resort and other drop off locations. No ticket is needed. You can walk out of the port area from the cruise ship, but it’s a fairly long walk.

The first tram stop is Resorts World Bimini. The 2nd stop on the tram is Paradise Beach where you can rent loungers, umbrellas, kayaks, and the golf carts mentioned above.

Ultimate List of Things to Do and See in Bimini Bahamas

1. beach club.

When visiting Bimini with Virgin Voyages, the Beach Club is included at no extra charge.  Virgin partnered with World Resorts to offer the Beach Club as the cruise line’s “private island destination”. The Beach Club has two swimming pools and an exclusive private area for guests staying in Rock Star suites.

A buffet lunch is served at the Beach Club and soft drinks are included, just like on Virgin ships.

When visiting Bimini with other cruise lines, there is a charge to get in the Beach Club and you will also have to pay for food and basic beverages. There is a free tram that will take you from the pier right to the Beach Club.

2. See the underwater, mystical Bimini Wall (Bimini Road)

For a truly remarkable underwater experience that comes with some controversy, check out a dive to the Bimini Wall. This underwater rock formation, sometimes called the Bimini Road has had many conspiracy theories as to its origin.

Is it an ancient road to the lost city of Atlantis?  Was it caused by a tsunami? Man-made or natural, the large rectangular limestone slabs have inspired all kinds of theories. The structure is about half a mile long and is 18 feet below the water.

3. Experience the best beaches of Bimini

This is the perfect destination for those wanting a relaxing beach day. Use our list for the best sandy beaches in Bimini, or you can just rent a golf cart and drive around the small island to find them yourself.

You will find some great beach locations at the south end of the north island. The waters of Bimini are truly remarkable.

One of the many white sandy beaches in Bimini

Below are some of the highest rated beaches in the Bimini islands. These beaches never feel overcrowded, but some are more secluded than others.

  • Radio Beach – Probably the most popular beach due to its beauty and easy access, Radio Beach is very close to Alice Town. It’s the only public beach on the islands to have public amenities as bathrooms and food vendors.
  • Tiki Hut Beach – With a 2 mile-long stretch of white sand, Tiki Hut Beach offers a great getaway. Palm trees and vegetation provide are all around, helping make the beach on South Bimini island seem even more secluded.
  • Porgy Bay Beach – This is a cozy, quaint beach in North Bimini just south of Resorts World Bimini in Bailey Town.
  • Spook Hill – Shallow and calm waters can be found at Spook Hill beach, and it’s one of the most popular beaches in Bimini for good reason. The name comes from the proximity of the beach to a local cemetery but don’t let that scare you away from the soft as talc sand.
  • Blister Beach – A lovely beach in North Bimini known for its calmer waters and great snorkeling, this beach also goes by the name Bimini Bay Beach.
  • Resort World Bimini Beach – Perfect for a resort style beach, this area is a 4.5 acre beach with room for up to 2,000 people.
  • Local Cays with great beach spots – If you feel like getting a little further away from the main Bimini islands you can check out some incredible local cays. Turtle Rocks, Piquet Rocks, Holm Cay, North Cat Cay (Honeymoon Harbour), and South Cat Cay are just a few local beaches to get away from it all.

4. Go on a shark dive with Bimini Bull Run

You will get up close an personal with Caribbean bull sharks on this Bimini island excursion. The number of sharks you see while on this cage dive is really quite impressive. Shark fishing is actually illegal in the Bahamas and these creatures thrive in the crystal clear waters.

All you need is a diving mask and a belt and you can plunge into the shark-infested waters for a very unique experience. The sharks are given scraps of food all around the cage and the visibility in these waters is second-to-none.

5. Explore the wreckage of the S.S. Sapona

S.S. Sapona’s wreckage has remained in place for almost 100 years, after the concrete ship ran aground during a hurricane in 1926.

The ship was originally commissioned by President Woodrow Wilson and was built to transport troops during the first World War, although it never did so.  The vessel was made out of concrete since steel was not as readily available at the time.

This popular dive site is perfect for snorkeling as well, as the wreck sits in just 15 feet of water. The shipwreck site was used as a bombing target for United States fighter pilots during World War II , so the ship shows significant damage.

But divers are still able to see inside the concrete hull of the ship and find many varieties of marine life around the area. History lovers and diving enthusiasts alike will find something to love at the S.S. Sapona wreckage site.

6. Visit Rainbow Reef and Tuna Alley

These two amazing dive sites are part of the same reef system off the coast of North Cat Cay . A short boat ride south from the main Bimini islands to the Bimini Cays will get you there, and you can explore both the same day.

  • Rainbow Reef is one of the most colorful (hence the name) and shallow reefs in Bimini. Accessible by boat, the maximum depth of the reef is about 20 feet. As part of a protected marine park over 100 species of fish can be found in the area. If you decide to dive or snorkel to the deepest parts of the reef you may find sea turtles and nurse sharks that frequent the reef. Typically this area is teeming with marine life and there is an abundance of coral to admire.
  • Tuna Alley has been called by some divers “the best dive site in the Caribbean”. An underwater wall over 100 feet tall inspires awe in most guests who view this site. This is another reef right near North Cat Cay. There are several canyons under the water that are perfect for exploring. The water is pristine as well, as the Gulf Stream’s current helps wash out any debris and keep the seas looking “ Bimini blue” . The name of this scuba diving site was inspired by the numerous tuna that can often be found near the reef.

7. Explore Victory Reef

Victory Reef is also teeming with life and divers can expect to find fish, sea turtles, lobsters and sharks in the area. Most recommend the site for drift diving, as you can drift along with the marine life and enjoy the tall, vibrant, and abundant coral along this beautiful reef. The reef is located south of North Cat Cay , which is south of the Bimini islands and it’s depth runs from 30 – 80 feet.

8. Tour Dolphin House Museum

For $10 per person , you can check out a very unique museum in Bimini. Built completely from recycled materials, this enchanting building houses eclectic mosaics that reflect the islands history. Perhaps the door on the building says it best, “Welcome to Bimini’s most unique and artistic structure.  Built by Ashley Saunders . A bridge between human and dolphin consciousness. A work in progress since 1993.”

As the museum truly is a work in progress you can expect new things to be added all the time. Keep in mind the museum is also the artist’s home, so it’s more of residence than an exhibit. Still, everywhere you turn in the Dolphin House you will find something unique, built by hand, and made from recycled materials . There are 3 levels of the building to explore with a roof top terrace that overlooks the beautiful water.

9. Stop by the legendary Fountain of Youth

According to legend, Arawak Indians in the area told the explorer Juan Ponce de Leon about a Fountain of Youth in Bimini. In 1513 the ambitious explorer set out to find Bimini but failed to find the islands or the fountain. Then he went on to discover the Gulf Stream and Florida instead.

Today there is a 1,000 year-old well carved out of limestone rock that locals refer to as the Fountain of Youth. The well is fairly deep and there is fresh water way down at the bottom. As far as it’s healing properties…. I will just say that being in the calming atmosphere of Bimini is enough to keep one young.

10. Hilton at Resort World Bimini

Hilton at Resort World Bimini is a beautiful resort. It offers an array of amenities and activities such as a private beach, swimming pool, spa, fitness center, restaurants, parasailing, glass-bottom boat tours, tennis courts and more.

Guests can take advantage of complimentary shuttles to the nearby marina or enjoy sailing excursions on crystal clear waters. From deep sea fishing trips to snorkeling and scuba diving expeditions, there is plenty to do around this stunning property. There’s also a casino inside if you feel like leaving some donations to the 750-acre resort .

11. Visit Bimini Big Game Club Resort and Marina

This resort has been in its current location in Alice Town since 1947 and is the perfect destination for sports fisherman looking for a big-game fishing experience. While the name of the resort kind of says it all, Bimini Big Game Club Resort has a plethora of activities to take part in.

Amenities include a pool, game area with pool and ping pong, a dive shop, several restaurants, massage services and more. There are hotel and dive packages if you plan on spending the night, or you can book one of their Bimini Dive Safaris to check out Hammerheads and dolphins. Guided fishing excursions from the resort are offered for both new and experienced anglers.  Bimini holds multiple world records for fish caught in the area, so you never know what you might find.

12. Visit Neal Watson’s Bimini Scuba Center

Since the scuba center is located in Bimini Big Game Club Resort I could have just put it in the same category, but I didn’t want those looking exclusively for diving experiences to miss this one. Neal Watson is President of the Bahamas Dive Association and is world-renown for his diving savvy. Oh, and Neal is also Director of Dive Operations for Guy Harvey Outpost so he knows what he’s doing.

Today the scuba center is operated by father and son. There are over 20 dive sites that have buoys marking their location. They are placed and maintained by commercial dive operators. If you want to see any of the reefs or dive sites already mentioned in this article and want a pro to show you the ropes, this is a great starting point.

Because of Bimini’s proximity to the Gulf Stream it is not uncommon for visitors to see spotted dolphins, Loggerhead turtles, Southern stingrays, nurse sharks, and barracudas, along with numerous kingfish and tropical fish.

13. Take a Boat Charter

Whether you want to charter a boat in Bimini for some deep sea fishing, spear fishing, snorkeling, or just some sightseeing around the beautiful Bimini islands, you can easily find a charter boat to take you out.

There are many companies in Bimini that offer fishing charters, and they range from private boats to larger vessels with experienced captains and crew. Many of the boats also come equipped with amenities like air-conditioning, cabins, and full kitchens. You can book a charter for a half-day or full day trip depending on your needs, and prices vary based on the size of the boat, the length of your trip, and other special requests.

Before booking any charter make sure to inquire about their safety record and what type of insurance coverage is provided by the company. That way you’ll have peace of mind knowing that you’re in good hands while out on the water. One of the more popular charter services is Bimini Brown Charters . They have been doing this for a long time and really know the area.

Port Guide and Shore Excursions in Bimini (Guide)

You’re going on a cruise and one of your stops is in Bimini, Bahamas. Here is our port guide which also covers the shore excursions in Bimini to help you plan your trip based on our personal experience of visiting this port.

Bimini is a chain of small islands located in the Bahamas. When cruising with Virgin Voyages , the cruise port is located within the Resorts World Bimini complex. You are free to explore Resorts World on your own but you will need to get a shuttle to get to the private Beach Club.

Our First Ever Cruise (Royal Caribbean Majesty of the Seas Review)

While the Beach Club at Bimini was built for Virgin Voyages, other cruise lines utilize it as one of their stops if Virgin is not at port.

There is a Carnival Cruise that sails out of Jacksonville that also stops at Bimini. We are excited to book that cruise since that means another day at the beach club!

Beach Club at Bimini Pool

Where is the Beach Club at Bimini located ?

Resorts World is located in North Bimini Island, and the main town and hotel is located on a thin strip of land so you can see water out of both sides. To put it into context, North Bimini Island is relatively small enough that you can opt to rent a golf cart and drive around to see the sites.

We will cover both land and sea activities in Bimini in this guide as well as what to do within Resorts World in Bimini and if you can DIY your own tours when your ship calls at Bimini.

Resorts World Bimini is a huge beach resort complex, which has hotel rooms and houses also available for paying guests. When a ship docks in Bimini, it means it is docking at the Resorts World in Bimini.

This does not mean that Virgin Voyages or other cruise lines rent out the entire Resorts World complex when their ship is docked. The cruise line rents out just the beach club area whenever the ship is in port while the other facilities are free for guests of Resorts World to use.

Think of it like a private island owned by the cruise line except it is only private within the gates of the club. Everything else is within the resort complex.

Bimini Beach on Beach Club at Bimini (Virgin Voyages)

The beach club has an amazing beach with turquoise water and fine white sand. It is private to the Virgin cruise (or other cruise lines that dock there) so no other guests are there.

In addition to the beach club, there are other beaches within the Resorts World complex that you could lounge and spend the day in. The first one is by the excursions area, where you sign a waiver under the hut. There are beach chairs with umbrellas available but the actual beach is small and has motorized boats.

In terms of other amenities, you are a bit out of luck. Public bathrooms are a 10 minute walk from that beach. It is a doable walk, and you can take a peek at the general store and golf car rental located within the area, but if you need to do your business or want to change, walking 10 mins from the beach is not exactly the most convenient.

You are not isolated to the Resorts World Complex when your ship is docked. You can rent a golf cart and go out to explore the town if you so wish. The island is really small, and a full day rental is more than enough time to see all the main sites.

A rental costs $75 for the day for a two seater cart. Additional costs may apply if you need a bigger golf cart. We would update this post on what you can see and do on the island when we get to explore ourselves!

View of Sapona Shipwreck while snorkeling in Bimini Bahamas - shore excursion in Bimini

If you watch the YouTube channel, Sailing La Vagabonde, you probably know that the Bahamas is known for both shipwrecks and sharks. If you dock in Bimini, there is a shipwreck located within a 30 minute boat ride from Resorts World called the Sapona.

The Sapona shipwreck is made from concrete, and managed to float successfully as a supply and cargo boat. During Prohibition, the Sapona was a floating storage for contraband alcohol in the US.

It became a ship then used for target practice until it became a site for tourists to snorkel around in. If you are a good swimmer, you could swim through the shipwreck and end up in the inside of the boat. As you see the mangled remains of the ship, be careful not to scrape the metal while swimming and be wary of fire coral.

Our guides told us that fire corals were abundant in the shipwreck and that if you touch any part of your body on the coral, you’re in for pain.

The current is a bit strong around the shipwreck. My husband is a good swimmer but even he had trouble trying to get to the other side of the ship. We only had 30 minutes to spend snorkeling on and around the ship and before long, it was time to go back on the boat for the next stop.

Swimming with the Sharks in Bimini Bahamas - shore excursions in Bimini

If swimming with sharks is on your bucket list then this is a must see and do. The boat ride is only around 5 minutes from the Sapona Shipwreck and the shark swimming spot has a view of the Sapona shipwreck.

The guide will lower 2 lines from the boat and they ask snorkelers to hold on to the line as the sharks swim around you and the boat. Do not splash around as a shark’s sense of hearing is brilliant, as well as their sense of smell.

Fins are required when swimming with the sharks as it lowers the chance of them trying to nibble your toes! Who would want to go on vacation to lose some toes? No one!

After 30 minutes, the snorkel is over (not enough time in my opinion) and the guides will feed the sharks from the side of the boat. The sharks have gotten used to boats docking in that area and in exchange for not harming the swimming humans, they will get paid in fish. Not a bad trade.

Bring out your cameras for the feeding frenzy that will follow once everyone has boarded the boat. It is short but awesome. See our video below.

The total cost for the sapona shipwreck and shark dive from Virgin as a shore excursion is around $130 for 5 hours. The price may vary depending on which cruise line you book with and how they package the tour.

There’s also diving tours available as shore excursions on your ship. Whether you are a beginner or already have a scuba certification, some dives involve swimming with hammerhead sharks. Something I would definitely consider in the future.

As with diving, the excursion can get a bit pricey, but includes the oxygen tanks and the gear. Some of these dives only cater to those who are scuba-certified, so bring your ID and gear in case they need proof.

This tour is a bit much since it costs $85 per person for a two hour tour. It is really easy: you get shuttled on a tram, taken downtown, and a tour guide will show you some sites and even open a conch. Do you get to hop on and hop off as you wish? No.

If you are the adventurous type and want to explore at your own pace then I would skip this tour and save the money for something else. However, if you want a hassle-free city tour that takes you to all the good posts on the island, then this could be as good an option as any.

Bonfire and performers at Beach Club at Bimini

With two pools, two bars, and unlimited food, what else would you want to do but relax? However, if you are an active person and want to know other activities you could do in the area then this section is for you!

Our day in Bimini was pretty full. A shore excursion in the morning, then off to the beach club for lunch. After lunch, we walked around and looked for photo worthy spots (and there are many).

We got lucky and two ladies were leaving the beach club to go back to the ship and gave us their seats. Prime spots complete with shade! There may not be enough good lounge areas by the pool, but there are a few other places you can lounge and sun around by the beach.

It just depends if you want something shady or if you like something closer to the beach, the pool, or the food and booze.

Our ship was not operating at full capacity, which is why there’s enough for everyone. I wouldn’t know for sure if there will be enough lounge chairs on a full ship.

Port and Excursion Guide to Bimini

We participated in some beach games, lounged around with some giant floaties on the pool, lounged and pretended to swim in the pool some more and waited for the bonfire.

The pool is big enough to do laps in but there’s just too many people in the pool to do that.

There might be dance parties, other games, and more, but during a beach day, you can just sit, read, and watch the world go by.

You can walk or run on the beach, swim in the ocean, but you can bring shells home. They will confiscate whatever you try to smuggle from the beach or buy from the store. If you get a souvenir, make sure it is your usual paraphernalia, never an actual shell.

I hope you are and I hope this post helped you with your planning! Bimini is one of those ports that are not as visited, and is slowly being opened up to the world. Here’s to more cruise ports to visit and explore on cruises!

Bimini Cruise Port Guide: Everything You Need To Know

Robert Marmion

Bimini is a new port in the Bahamas that should quickly become a favorite of cruisers for its easy access to beaches and activities. There are however a few tricks to getting the most for your money in Bimini.

Arrival at the Pier in Bimini Bahamas

Your ship will dock at the pier and you’ll be able to walk right into the port. It is a flat and wide pier, with plenty of room for all passengers.

Bimini Bahamas Pier

At the end of the pier you’ll come to a parking lot that acts as a pickup station for the island tram, which is run by Resorts World. The tram is free and will take you to most of the Resorts World properties and activities. You should plan on riding the tram.

Bimini Resorts World tram

You could also walk across the bridge into town for direct access to Kayak Beach, Fisherman’s Village, golf cart rentals, and taxis, but the tram also stops at Kayak Beach and Fisherman’s village. Unless you really just like walking in the heat, take the tram to one of those stops if you are wanting to go there.

Many people were making that walk, likely because it looks like the tram is only for passengers on shore excursions, but we confirmed with staff that it is free for everyone.

Kayak Beach Bimini

Kayak Beach Bimini

The first stop on the tram is Kayak Beach. The water here is not as good as the upcoming beaches, and there is no reason to get off here unless you just want to get to the beach as quickly as possible. You could also pick up a taxi at this stop. As noted by the lack of people in the picture, there are better beaches to come!

Fisherman’s Village

Bimini Fisherman's Village

The 2nd tram stop is Fisherman’s Village, which is mostly shopping. If you’d like to get a few gifts from the Bimini Cruise Port, this is the place to do it.

Resorts World Bimini Beach

The third stop for the tram is Resorts World Bimini Beach. We booked a shore excursion, which is basically a day pass to the resort for $39 on our cruise ship. Included in that price was a welcome drink, but no lunch. Many people will get off at this stop as it is the same stop as Beach 360.

carnival cruise excursions bimini

Resorts World is amazing, with crystal clear water and resort style pools, food and restrooms. It is everything you could ask for in a day at the beach. Deck chairs and umbrellas were provided by the pool at no cost and there was no trouble finding an open spot as the resort is large.

If you are looking for the best beach and want access to facilities, this is the place you should go.

Resorts World Bimini Beach

There was an option on our cruise to book the resort with lunch included for an extra $25. The price seemed high and this was confirmed by looking at the menu once we got there. All meals were $15, so it was a $10 markup by the cruise ship on lunch. Skip the included lunch and just buy what you would like when you get there.

Bimini Beach Lunch Menu

Resorts World Bimini Beach has two resort style pools, one for adults only and one for families. We found neither to be crowded and there were great places to sit all around.

Resorts World Bimini Pool

Another option you might be tempted by is the pool cabana. These seemed like they were really overpriced at $399, we didn’t see anyone in them the entire time we were there.

Your excursion will include a welcome drink, and you do need to pick it up on arrival, but don’t get too excited about it. The voucher is not good for any drink you want at the bar.

carnival cruise excursions bimini

Bimini Cruise Port Best Free Beach

The best free option is Paradise Beach, which is located directly next to the Resorts World Beach. In fact while at Resorts World Bimini Beach we walked up to Paradise Beach because it was much less crowded.

Paradise Beach Bimini

To reach Paradise Beach, get off at the stop after Resorts World. You’ll have access to a free beautiful beach, and food trucks, but no resort amenities. The main downfall to this beach is there is nowhere to wash off the saltwater after going in the water, but an excursion here would be completely free.

Our cruise was offering an excursion to Paradise Beach with a snorkel for $75 per person. The beach and tram are free though, so you are basically renting a snorkel for $75!

Where you go on Bimini will come down to if you want restrooms and a resort freshwater pool, and if you are willing to pay $39 for that. If you want that, go to Resorts World Bimini Beach, if not, go to Paradise Beach for free.

Resorts World Casino

On the way back to the ship the tram will stop at Resorts World Casino (and Fisherman’s Village again). Get off here if you’d like to play in a casino during your Bimini Cruise Port stop.

I have some questions for those that have been on a Carnival Cruise to Bimini and Nassau.

My wife and I are taking a Carnival Cruise to the Bahamas in November and when we reviewed some of the excursions at Bimini and from some of the reviews it appears that the excursions are a rip off.  The review of the excursion to Resort World with drinks and lunch said that the drinks were what they wanted to serve not what you might ask for at a bar, the beach was crowded and lunch was a hot dog. The excursion to the beach didn't sound good either as again, the beach was overcrowded and almost sounded like it was the same beach as the World Resort.  It was mentioned that there was a tram that you take but it's crowded as well and doesn't leave unless it's full.  So my question is this......

Is the beach they mention in the excursion the only beach to go to or is there another beach that's safe?  Also I had a bad experience in St Thomas with a tram taking forever to get to the beach and found out after the fact that had we taken a private cab we could have been at the beach in no time so is this the same sort of thing were you can take the tram but you're better off taking a cab?  One person who reviewed the World Resort excursion led me to believe that instead of going when the excursion is set to start that you should get off the boat early and get there early.  They said that' you'd have to pay for any drinks out of pocket before 11:30 but you're there and can claim your spot before everyone else gets there.

What we really want is to go to the beach as fast as we can rent 2 chairs and an umbrella and be able to get food and drinks at the beach and enjoy the day.  Can anyone who has been there give me some advice on whether to go with an excursion or do it yourself?  What about the suggestion to go early.  It seems to me that the tram is the thing that holds you up and keeps you from making the most of your time.  Any help will be appreciated.

Trams are plentiful. Get off at the stop with taxis.  Take a taxi to Radio Beach. You can rent chairs there, and there are open air bars and restaurants, as well as some of the prettiest water you will ever see.  Hubby, three grands and I did this, and we all agree it is among our favorite port days.  Plus the money you spend is actually going to the locals. Win, win.

The tram didn't take long at all in our December, 2023 visit, and there were multiple trams running constantly. We took the tram and then rented a golf cart to explore the island. We wound up at Radio Beach for a while, and it was fine. I think the advice in the post by lazydayz above is good.

I was really not impressed with Bimini and I'd be fine never going there again, but to each their own.

We went there on Carnivals very first stop at this port.  Shortly after the covid start up.  Frankly cannot add a lot as they were openly scared to death that we were bringing covid to them.  Wanted to rent a cart and explore but they said they were all rented, even tho there were at least 30 or so in lot.  One weird day.

Thanks for the feedback.  This is what I expected although the info on the trams not being crowded was a bit surprising.  After Radio Beach was mentioned I looked it up and found similar suggestions on not taking the excursion.  TripAdvisor comments said to take the tram to the first stop which is the cab stand and take a $5 per person taxi to Radio beach early in the day and go from there.  We wasted soooooo much time at St Thomas riding the tram to all of these different stops before getting to Megan's beach that we felt cheated so that's why I asked about what to do at Bimini as we're not going to be cheated again.  Thanks.

The tram at Bimini is totally different than what you experienced in St. Thomas.  This one really is for the port and surrounding property.  And you just use it to get to the taxis.

You can rent a golf cart for about $50-$60 (negotiable) near the pier and explore all the way from Resorts World down to the southern tip. Radio Beach is along the way as well where you can just park the cart and walk a few feet. But yeah, taking a taxi is cheaper overall and you can buy (relatively) cheap fast food from the various "shacks" near Radio Beach.

On the Bahamian beat

It isn’t just the impossibly neon turquoise water, or the seemingly unperturbed beaches that coyly dance with the waves that make Bimini so enticing. Sitting on the westernmost part of the Bahamian Islands, Bimini is the far less-visited port home to a decidedly more intimate and visceral heartbeat.

Before jumping in the water, you’ll get professional instruction from the stingray pros. Interact with these amazing creatures by swimming alongside as they glide through the water.

On a jet ski for two, glide along the coast of North and South Bimini Islands. As you tear through the water on your own easy-to-drive jet ski, a guide will take you to old plane and ship wreckage sites — plus, you’ll see mangroves and the gorgeous marine life that call these waters home. Never ridden before? No worries — your guide will show you how to use the controls and give you some tips before you head out. (Or just enjoy the waves from the rear while your partner does all the steering).

Bimini heritage and cultural tour

Experience the island and its rich history with a tour through North Bimini via an open-air tram cart with the Caribbean wind flowing through your hair. A tour guide will take you through the history of the islands, while hitting 6 historical spots and famous favorites along the way.

Sapona Shipwreck & Shark Snorkeling

The first stop on this underwater safari is a dive with nurse and reef sharks in a controlled environment at Triangle Rock. The next stop, The Wreck of Sapona, is widely regarded as the most famous dive site in Bimini and is evidence of the island’s storied history.

Best Bahamas Cruises

C ruises to the Bahamas are filled with sun, soft sands, and the opportunity to dip your toes in a warm and seductive crystal blue sea. The 700-island archipelago is the kind of oasis you dream of when, in my case at least, you're indoors on a cold and dark day in Cleveland. Exploring the islands is tricky by air, but much easier via ship. Bahamas cruises to take right now include quick jaunts from easy-to-get-to Florida ports as well as one-week and longer cruises that explore more deeply. You can sail there in less than a day from Florida (cruises tend to embark in the early evening and hang out at sea until the next morning ashore), which makes it both an easy escape for a quick getaway or somewhere to linger for even more rest and relaxation.

What to expect on a Bahamas cruise

The main places cruise ships visit in the Bahamas are Nassau, the capital city, and some of the islands and beaches that are affiliated with cruise lines, such as Disney's private family wonderland Castaway Cay, off Great Abaco Island. There are small ships that explore further, including to the southern reaches of the archipelago.

Cruise passengers will find opportunities to hike in national parks, enjoy nearly deserted beaches, and explore many small churches-the Bahamas boasts more churches per capita than anywhere else in the world.

In the Bahamian capital of Nassau on New Providence Island, visitors can get a better understanding of the nation's British colonial and West African slave history as well as of the Junkanoo culture and festivals at wonderful museums. Most day visitors, though, are typically focused on water attractions: heading off on diving or snorkeling excursions, boarding party boats with free-flowing rum punch, experiencing the beaches, swimming pools, and waterslides at the Atlantis Bahamas resort on Paradise Island, or trying to catch the big one on fishing charters.

On small ship itineraries, you may stop at San Salvador Island, where Christopher Columbus may or may not have made his first landing in the New World. (Historians quibble on the exact landing spot.) A white cross memorializes the supposed landing spot. Long Island, which stretches some 80 miles, has both rugged and sandy coasts and the natural attraction of Dean's Blue Hole, one of the deepest sinkholes in the world at 663 feet, a place where divers and snorkelers can mingle with turtles and tarpons. The small island of Bimini is known for its clean beaches and rich marine life-hanging out at beach clubs, seeking quiet escapes in the land, and watching for dolphins and other sea creatures are prime activities.

Other cruise destinations include Eleuthera, with its inviting pink sands and protected park areas. In addition to beaches, the 365-island chain known as the Exumas are famous for swimming pigs (though they also live elsewhere in the Bahamas).

Ever since it first opened 1998, the highlight of any Disney cruise in the Bahamas has been Castaway Cay, a picture-perfect white-sand island paradise, complete with pirate attractions and Disney character appearances. What has Disney fans all atwitter is the opening in summer 2024 of a second exclusive for Disney Bahamas destination, Lighthouse Point, on the island of Eleuthera. There, Disney promises a celebration of Bahamian culture, including Junkanoo parades, characters from Bahamas folklore, and performances by local artists. An accompanying commitment to conservation at Lighthouse Point includes a solar installation that will provide at least 90 percent of the destination's required electricity (Castaway Cay also has a solar installation). A seven-night itinerary in December 2023 gets you from Fort Lauderdale to Nassau, Bimini, San Salvador, and Long Island, Bahamas, with the bonus of some additional time built in to enjoy the Hemingway House & Museum and other attractions in Key West, Florida. Optional small group shore excursions in the Bahamas include an "Eco-Marine Safari" on Long Island, that combines small boat exploration of a mangrove channel and sandbars with a visit to see swimming pigs in a quiet cay. With both the cruise line and the Royal at Atlantis on Paradise Island affiliated with Marriott International , there's also a hotel tie-in-you can book a daybed at the resort's chic adults-only pool area, the Cove .

An expedition team runs excursions including with two helicopters and a submarine, which will enhance your Bahamas views from both over and under the sea. Or borrow paddleboards and kayaks from the ship's marina for your own solo exploration. A 12-night sailing from Nassau to Bridgetown, Barbados, starts with six days in the Bahamas, before following the yachting crowd south. Stops include Compass Cay in the Exuma Cays, where in the clear water you might see nurse sharks even from the ship. Bird lovers will enjoy a rare visit to the southernmost island in the Bahamas, Great Inagua Island, with its resident population of some 80,000 flamingos. Whiskey lovers will want to check out the ship's collection of more than 110 varieties.

The "Bountiful Bahamas" itinerary lingers in the Exumas and around Long Island, with the opportunity to explore pristine beaches, hang out at beach shack bars, and snorkel in the clear sea. There's also an unusual visit to the uninhabited Bahamas island Salt Cay (also known as Cay Sal), only accessible by boat and some 50 miles from Marathon, Florida. In between kayaking quiet bays, try the yacht's newest attraction, an inflatable slide running from the pool deck into the water. 10 of the Best Mexico Cruises to Book Right Now

Travel experts share their picks for the 10 best cruises to Mexico in 2024 and 2025.

carnival cruise excursions bimini

Mexico is an exciting and varied destination with white-sand beaches, dense jungles, modern cities, and ancient ruins. The large country offers coasts on the Pacific Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and the Sea of Cortez bordering Baja, along with many fascinating places to visit. A stay at one of Mexico’s luxurious resorts is one way to experience the country, but for those who want to see more than one destination, a cruise might be the way to go.

With a cruise, you can visit a variety of ports and enjoy the onboard amenities on your way to somewhere new each day. Most ships offer pools, spas, fitness centers, several dining options, and entertainment and enrichment activities — and, when you're in port, organized excursions offer a range of options, from lazy beach days to exciting adventures. Mexican cruises allow you to experience all these offerings and a laundry list of destinations with no worries about changing hotels, packing up, or getting yourself from place to place.

Pam Jacobs, a cruise specialist with TravelStore in Palos Verdes, California, points out that there's also a wide range of cruise lines available. “Depending on who is going on the cruise — whether it’s a family, couple, friends, multigenerational group — I’ll recommend a specific cruise line. Options vary from adults-only cruises to cruise ships with water parks and kids clubs.”

Meet the Expert

  • Pam Jacobs is a California-based travel advisor at TravelStore, specializing in all types of cruises and rail vacations.
  • Rob Clabbers is a T+L A-List travel advisor specializing in cruises and the founder of Q Cruise + Travel.
  • Mary Curry is a T+L A-List travel advisor and small ship specialist with Adventure Life Journeys.

Here’s a selection of Mexico cruises showing the variety of styles, amenities, and locations available to enjoy on land and on the sea.

National Geographic Expeditions

With small groups of 100 or fewer guests, the Mexican cruises offered by National Geographic Expeditions are perfect for travelers who want to become immersed in the destinations they choose. The ships' small size allows them to access narrow inlets and areas close to shore, and their expansive decks offer opportunities for photographing and observing wildlife. “Non-cruisers and those who prefer nature rather than nightlife and entertainment enjoy small ship expeditions,” says Rob Clabbers.

Onboard, a team of experts ranging from naturalists to historians provide background on the wildlife, local culture, and environment. The ships offer comfortable cabins and serve fresh cuisine with ingredients inspired by and sourced from the destinations. Guests can choose daily activities of light to moderate physical impact, with options for walking, hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, or biking depending on the destination. For young guests, the National Geographic Global Explorers program includes hands-on activities onboard the ship and in the field that focus on everything from observation skills to photography and maps.

The Itinerary: The Baja California: Among the Great Whales cruise boards at San Carlos on Baja’s Pacific Coast for two days in Bahía Magdalena, one of the main breeding and calving sites for gray whales, where cruisers can kayak, paddleboard, or take a Zodiac to explore. Heading south, the ship passes the southern tip of Baja before arriving at Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park with an opportunity to snorkel among the coral reefs and marine life. As the ship heads north in the Gulf of California, guests can explore birds and tropical fish among uninhabited islands before disembarking in Loreto on day eight.

UnCruise Adventures

Courtesy of UnCruise

Mary Curry tells Travel + Leisure , “For an active experience, consider a small ship cruise off the coast of Baja. Several small ship lines offer yachts under 100 passengers that include a menu of excursions — kayaking, hiking, horseback riding, paddleboarding, whale watching, and more.” Curry mentioned UnCruise Adventures as an example. “For travelers who want to truly immerse themselves in the outdoor world, a small ship Baja cruise is the only way to go!”

Both of UnCruise's current Mexican offerings take place on the Safari Voyager , which holds 66 guests. The ship was built for ease of navigating and for the humidity and heat of the tropics, with an air-conditioned lounge featuring big windows for 270-degree views. Onboard, there’s an EZ Dock kayak launch platform, a bow-mounted underwater camera, inflatable skiffs, hiking poles, snorkel gear, kayaks, and paddleboards. Guests also have access to fitness equipment, yoga mats, and a library.

The Itinerary: The round-trip Baja California’s Whales & Sealife cruise offers seven nights aboard the Safari Voyager . From the embarkation point in La Paz, guests cruise to Isla San Francisco, where they can snorkel, hike, kayak, or paddleboard to experience the rugged island. At Bahía Agua Verde, looking for birds, seals, dolphins, and whales is on the agenda along with a mule ride and visit with a local ranchero. The remaining days include more secluded islands and plenty of wildlife viewing — depending on the season, guests can see gray, fin, blue, orca, and sperm whales, along with hundreds of dolphins and many species of birds.

Royal Caribbean International

Courtesy of Royal Caribbean

“For family cruises to Mexico, I often recommend Royal Caribbean," Pam Jacobs of TravelStore tells T + L. "There’s so much to do on the ships, like water slides, entertainment, and many dining options, so there’s something for all ages to enjoy." This makes Royal Caribbean great for multigenerational groups, she says, noting that their ships tend to include both adults-only areas and youth entertainment.

Navigator of the Seas , a ship that sails exclusively from Los Angeles to Mexico’s west coast, features pools, a splash pad, a surf simulator, and water slides like the Blaster aqua coaster and Riptide headfirst mat racer. Entertainment includes an ice skating show, original productions, outdoor movie nights, pool parties, live music, and an arcade. Adults have their places to relax too, like the Solarium, a pool, whirlpool, and lounge area for guests over the age of 18.

The Itinerary: Departing from Los Angeles, the Seven Night Cabo, Vallarta & Mazatlán cruise spends a day at sea before arriving in Cabo San Lucas, where guests can spend time on the beach, take a boat ride along the shore, explore the art gallery district, or sample the local cuisine. In Mazatlán, there’s the beachfront malecón , traditional old town, and shopping at the Arts & Crafts Center. Puerto Vallarta features beaches, boutiques, street food, and the Xihuacan Museum and Archeological Site. After a final day at sea, the ship returns to Los Angeles.

Princess Cruises

Courtesy of Princess Cruises

“Princess Cruises is obviously a longtime regular in the Mexican Riviera. We all remember the ‘Welcome to Acapulco’ announcements whenever the Love Boat docked for another adventure!” Rob Clabbers says. “They still visit there regularly, but with much more modern ships, more amenities, and more options at the destinations.”

The Discovery Princess , the third vessel designed from the ground up with Princess Medallion Class conveniences, is one of those modern ships. The Medallion, a quarter-sized wearable device, provides for touch-free boarding, keyless stateroom entry, Wi-Fi, ordering food and beverages to your location, onboard directions, and ease of finding and messaging friends on the ship.

The Itinerary: The Mexico cruises on Princess depart from either San Francisco or Los Angeles. The Seven-Day Mexican Riviera journey embarks in Los Angeles and spends the next day at sea before arriving at Cabo San Lucas, where guests can choose from 22 excursions with activity levels from easy to strenuous. Options range widely, from shopping and sailing to horseback riding, ziplining, and snorkeling. The next port is Mazatlán with similar excursions for a full day, then the ship sails on to Puerto Vallarta and spends two final days at sea before disembarking back in LA.

Holland America Line

Courtesy of Holland America

The Koningsdam , Holland America Line’s first Pinnacle Class cruise ship, specializes in the North American West Coast. The 2,650-passenger ship boasts a huge roster of amenities, including a music lounge and trivia center affiliated with Billboard and an at-sea outpost of the performance venue chain, B.B. King's Blues Club. For days at sea, there are pickleball courts (complete with tournaments and complimentary lessons), a fitness center, a casino, and activities for kids ages 3-17. Dining options include a poolside grill, a pizza restaurant, the casual Lido Market, a French brasserie, an Italian restaurant, and the Pinnacle Grill steakhouse.

The Itinerary: The Seven-Day Baja Peninsula cruise boards in San Diego and spends a day at sea before arriving in Cabo San Lucas, where guests can take a catamaran cruise, ride a horse along the beach, snorkel, or explore the shopping and arts district. The next port is La Paz, with a palm-lined malecón to stroll along and whale-watching and fishing expeditions to choose from. In Loreto, one of Mexico’s oldest cities, guests can explore the town, visit a mission or museum, snorkel, or hike in a nearby canyon. After two last days at sea, the ship returns to San Diego.

Celebrity Cruises

Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

“The Caribbean side of Mexico is often included in Western Caribbean itineraries departing from Florida or Galveston," says Rob Clabbers. "The island of Cozumel is one of the most frequently visited ports of call, so there are often a lot of ships — and cruise travelers in port. Costa Maya (near Mahahual) is on the mainland and provides convenient access to beautiful beaches and Mayan ruins."

Sailings on Celebrity ships like the Constellation offer just what Clabbers describes. The 2,184-passenger vessel splits its time between the Caribbean and the Mediterranean and offers a range of amenities, including a casino, a fitness center, an art gallery, a rooftop terrace, and a basketball court. Kids will enjoy the "Camp at Sea" program, while grown-ups can take to the adults-only solarium, featuring a pool and hot tub. Guests can also upgrade to The Retreat for an exclusive lounge, private restaurant, and spacious suite, or to Concierge Class for special amenities and services.

The Itinerary: The seven-night Grand Cayman & Mexico Cruise boards in Tampa and arrives in Costa Maya after a day at sea. There, guests can spend time on a Caribbean beach, snorkel, shop, or explore Mayan ruins. The next port is George Town on Grand Cayman, where designer boutiques, a catamaran cruise, and a snorkeling adventure are on offer. Then there’s a full day in Cozumel for exploring the largest coral reef in the Western Hemisphere, relaxing on the beach, shopping in San Miguel, or venturing out to the city of Tulum. The ship then returns to Tampa after a day at sea.

Courtesy of Silversea

“The Mexican Riviera is often included on Panama Canal sailings," Rob Clabbers tells T+L. "Operated by both mainstream and more luxury lines like Silversea and Regent Seven Seas, these longer trans-canal sailings between Florida and Southern California offer the advantage of the canal experience combined with a few days in the Caribbean and Mexico.”

The Silver Shadow is one of the Silversea vessels that sails this enticing route. Its continent-crossing voyages provide a variety of experiences, including the thrill of passing through the Panama Canal; port days in Mexico, Colombia, and Costa Rica; and the spacious suites and exceptional service of this Shadow Class luxury ship. Four restaurants, the plush Panorama Lounge, the Observation Library, a pool, a casino, cocktail lounges, a fitness center, boutiques, and a salon provide many ways to spend time during days at sea. Suites range from the 287-square-foot Vista Suite to the two-bedroom Owner’s Suite at more than 1,200 square feet, including verandas.

The Itinerary: The 18-day Cruise from Fort Lauderdale to Los Angeles begins with two days at sea before the first stop in Cartagena, Colombia. Guests can explore the Old Town and enjoy the lively, historic city before another day at sea and arrival at the Panama Canal. After the memorable experience of passing through the locks for the 51-mile journey to the Pacific Ocean, passengers spend a day in Panama City. From there, it's on to Puntarenas, Costa Rica, where guests can choose between excursions like a half-day trek in a cloud forest or a jungle cruise. Four days at sea take the ship to Cabo San Lucas for a day, and the journey concludes with a day in San Diego and disembarkation in Los Angeles.

Virgin Voyages

Courtesy of Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages offers a special perk for many of its Mexico-bound Caribbean cruises: an embarkation point in the cruise line's own Terminal V. The three-story terminal on the northwestern corner of PortMiami is an exciting place to begin a cruise, with skyline views of downtown Miami, Biscayne Bay, and Edgewater. All of Virgin's ships have some itineraries including Caribbean Mexico, but the Scarlet Lady is particularly popular in the region, since Terminal V is its year-round home port. Pam Jacobs, who has experienced Virgin Voyages cruises, notes that the line's adults-only policy is especially appealing "for groups of friends, couples, and just about anyone" — if they're 18 or older.

Onboard, guests can choose from more than 20 eateries, multiple cocktail lounges, a pool, a spa, a casino, a fitness center, and a slate of entertainment that includes live music, circus performances, karaoke, and dance parties. Cabins range from economical Insider and Sea View staterooms to RockStar and Mega RockStar quarters with marble bathrooms, terrace hammocks, in-room bars, and more. Guests who book suites have exclusive access to the Richard’s Rooftop outdoor space and a VIP entrance at the terminal.

The Itinerary: The Western Caribbean Charm Cruise begins in Miami aboard Scarlet Lady and arrives at Roatán, Honduras, after a day at sea. Guests can explore the island on an ATV tour, take a zipline adventure, ride a horse along the beach, or relax on the sandy shore. In Costa Maya the next day, options include a snorkel and glass-bottom boat tour, a kayak excursion, off-roading, or a guided visit to Mayan ruins. After a day at sea, the ship arrives in Bimini in the western Bahamas for snorkeling, diving, swimming with stingrays, or relaxing in a Bimini Beach Club cabana before returning to Miami.

Oceania Cruises

Nick Tortajada/Oceania Cruises

I cruised to Mexico on Oceania's Vista earlier this year, leaving Los Angeles for a short introductory voyage to Mazatlán — and the experience had me instantly wanting to try it again. The opulent ship has a host of beautiful spaces, including a fabulous pool deck, hot tubs, cabanas, and plenty of plush lounges.

The staterooms are comfortably furnished with minibars, spacious closets, large windows, and convenient lighting. In the 2,400-square-foot Owner’s Suite, where I was lucky enough to attend a cocktail party, it’s easy to forget you’re not in a penthouse apartment — except when you step outside to see you’re surrounded by the ocean. The suite's full-sized bar, huge walk-in closet, enormous bathtub, and lavish bathroom would make most guests want to stay in their room. But more than a dozen restaurants and cocktail lounges beckon, and, for quiet time, there’s the library. My favorite part of the cruise was an evening in the lounge named Martinis, listening to piano music and sipping (what else?) a perfect martini.

The Itinerary: The 17-Day Los Angeles to Miami Cruise aboard the Vista offers four ports in Mexico, plus five other stops and a journey through the Panama Canal. The trip starts with a day at sea after leaving Los Angeles, then explores the Mexican west coast with stops in Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Manzanilla, and Acapulco. At those ports, guests can swim, snorkel, shop, and explore the towns and beaches. Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; Corinto, Nicaragua; and Puntarenas, Costa Rica, are the next ports, with a day in each for exploring or relaxing on the beach. The thrilling passage through the Panama Canal takes the ship to Cartagena, Colombia, and then, after a day at sea, to George Town, Cayman Islands, before returning to Miami.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Pam Jacobs of TravelStore prefers the Caribbean Coast for Mexico cruises, and she pointed out that people traveling from the American East Coast have many options for boarding such voyages, including in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Tampa, Florida; Galveston, Texas; and New Orleans. “This saves transportation dollars since they can choose the most economical departure point,” she explains. Norwegian Cruise Line offers Mexican cruises from nearly all of these locations.

Cruise aboard the Norwegian Getaway to experience the megaship life on your next trip south. A 3,903-passenger craft that was remodeled in 2020, the Getaway features five water slides, two pools, four hot tubs, a spa, a casino, and a salon. For young cruisers, there’s Entourage (for teens), Guppies Open Play (for toddlers), and a Kids Aqua Park. The variety of cuisines served onboard includes Brazilian, Japanese, Italian, French, and Chinese, and there's also a seafood restaurant, a raw bar, and several casual options. Staterooms range from economical Inside and Studio rooms to expansive Haven suites.

The Itinerary: The Seven-Day Caribbean Cruise departs from New Orleans and, after a day at sea, arrives in Costa Maya. Guests can visit a water park, explore the Kohunlich Mayan Ruins, swim with dolphins, or ride a dune buggy along the shore to the fishing village of Mahahual. The next day on Harvest Caye in Belize, options include parasailing, ziplining, fishing, or exploring on a glass-bottom boat trip. In Roatán, one of the Bay Islands of Honduras, guests can tour a wildlife preserve, learn about the Garifuna culture, relax in an overwater bungalow, or sample chocolate and local rum. The last port before a day at sea and a return to New Orleans is Cozumel, where guests can swim in a cenote, go snorkeling, enjoy some beach time, or hop on a trolley to see downtown Cozumel.

Are there words more fun to say than “I’m cruising to Bimini!”? The name rolls off the tongue delightfully, for sure… but the whole phrase means you’re in for a beautiful, uniquely chill time in this island chain. The center of the action is Alice Town, though “action” is relative when it comes to these westernmost islands of The Bahamas. The local aesthetics, however, will take your breath away — and fishing, diving and relaxing on a beach are a few of the choice activities for experiencing the naturally azure waters surrounding Bimini, which are great enjoyed from a distance or up-close!

Bahamas cruise guide: Best itineraries, planning tips and things to do

Ashley Kosciolek

If you've cruised or are planning to cruise to someplace warm, it's likely that the Bahamas will pop up on your itinerary — and for good reason. Found on both Bahamas-exclusive sailings and Caribbean voyages , Bahamian ports offer plenty of sun and sand, as well as opportunities for shopping, gambling and more.

The islands appeal to both new and seasoned cruisers. Their proximity to Florida makes them quick, easy and affordable to reach by ship, whether for a quick overnight trip or a call as part of a longer voyage.

Read on for all you need to know when planning a sailing that includes the Bahamas — one of the cruise industry's most popular destinations.

Why cruise to the Bahamas?

carnival cruise excursions bimini

In the Bahamas, the people are as warm as the weather, offering greetings and friendly smiles at every turn. The main draws, however, are the beaches and bright blue waters, which offer plenty of places to snorkel and scuba dive or to work on your tan while sipping a cocktail or two.

One of the best reasons to visit is that the islands are close to Florida — the cruise capital of the world. The Bahamas are frequented by most major cruise lines and show up on a large number of itineraries, from two-nighters to longer voyages.

The takeaway: Passengers have lots of choices. If you want to travel to the Bahamas by cruise ship, you can easily find a cruise line, length and price point to meet your needs.

The Bahamas is a great place to visit, as long as you set your expectations. Nassau, which is the largest port and the country's capital city, is often crowded with cruise ships. Locals will approach you with offers for everything from taxi rides to hair braiding. It can be overwhelming, so be prepared to politely decline if you're not interested.

When do cruises go to the Bahamas?

carnival cruise excursions bimini

Cruise ships call on the Bahamas all year. However, midwinter is generally the best time to go. Prices are cheaper, there are fewer passengers because children are in school and the weather isn't as sweltering as it is in summer. Plus, wave season — when cruise lines offer some of the best deals you'll see all year — runs from January through March, so you could snag a last-minute bargain. You also won't have to contend with potential itinerary changes due to hurricane season , which runs from June through October.

Weather in the Bahamas is generally mild, with temperatures ranging from the high 70s to low 90s Fahrenheit. As expected, the hottest months are found in summer, with lower temperatures during winter.

Best Bahamas itineraries

carnival cruise excursions bimini

Islands in the Bahamas are featured on lots of itineraries, ranging from short, Bahamas-specific sailings to longer Eastern and Western Caribbean voyages.

Bahamas-only cruises tend to be anywhere from two to five nights, and they visit a port or two in the Bahamas, as well as a private island (see below).

Eastern and Western Caribbean sailings usually start at five nights and can run up to two weeks in length, but most usually last about a week.

On those voyages, you're likely to see a mix of ports. In the Eastern Caribbean, expect to visit a combination of Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, the U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix) and the French West Indies (Martinique, St. Barts, Guadeloupe and St. Martin). If you go the western route, Belize, Honduras and Jamaica are common stops.

Additionally, cruisers can find Bahamas stops on sailings that depart from non-Florida ports on the East Coast, such as New York and Baltimore, and even Gulf Coast departures from Galveston, Texas. They are often seven or eight days in length and include calls on Florida and the Bahamas. Some also feature southern ports like Charleston, South Carolina.

Best Bahamas cruise lines

carnival cruise excursions bimini

Due to the Bahamas' popularity, the country's proximity to the East Coast and the number of ships it can accommodate at one time, most major cruise lines visit the islands there.

You'll mainly find sailings with the "Big Nine" brands — Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Holland America, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean and Virgin Voyages.

One unique outlier is Margaritaville at Sea (formerly Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line), which operates two-night voyages back and forth between Palm Beach, Florida, and Freeport, Bahamas. The cruise line also partners with a land-based resort there, allowing passengers to extend their vacations on land in the Bahamas if they wish to do so before returning to Florida on the ship several days later.

Because of how crowded and frenetic the main Bahamian ports can be, luxury lines tend to stay away. There are a few exceptions, though, such as Lindblad Expeditions. The line operates sailings to some of the Bahamas' Out Islands, which are too tiny for larger, more mainstream vessels to reach.

Things to do in the Bahamas

As you would expect from a warm-weather destination, outdoor pursuits are the most popular. Cruise passengers can walk to the nearest beach to sunbathe, swim, snorkel or scuba dive, or book a banana boat, parasailing or party boat excursion.

For fun, affordable souvenirs, shopping abounds at local shops and in Nassau's massive straw market, found on Bay Street. Just make sure you don't buy from the first vendor you see, as many stalls offer the same wares. You might find a cheaper price if you wait or if you bargain for a better deal.

If you're more the gambling type, take a quick taxi ride to Paradise Island, which is home to the famous Atlantis resort. Venture indoors to play table games or try your luck at the slot machines in the resort's casino, or purchase a day pass to use the outdoor pools and waterslides.

For fabulous food, ask a local to point you in the direction of their favorite restaurant, and head off the beaten path to try some conch fritters (fried conch meat) and peas with rice. For dessert, don't miss the semi-sweet bread-style johnnycakes.

Best Bahamas cruise ports

carnival cruise excursions bimini

The Bahamas has two main cruise ports: Nassau on New Providence Island and Freeport on Grand Bahama Island. Nassau offers plenty to see and do within a short walking distance from the port. However, Freeport requires passengers to book a shore excursion or take a taxi to most attractions.

Other Bahamas stops include Bimini, which is less frequented, and cruise line private islands that can only be accessed via cruise ship.

Historic Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, is the cruise industry's most trafficked cruise port. It's bustling and busy, and it can feel overwhelming to travelers on their first visit, especially when there are several ships docked at the same time.

But brightly colored buildings, expansive beaches and ample opportunities for shopping and dining quickly make up for the chaos.

Nassau is also a port teeming with culture. Formerly a haven for pirates, the city is now a history buff's dream, offering easy access to monuments and buildings that were once the stomping grounds of swashbuckling scallywags.

Freeport has a more relaxed vibe than Nassau. The slower pace of Grand Bahama Island, where Freeport is located, lends itself to lazy beach days and casual strolls through town for passengers in search of the perfect souvenir.

Water sports abound, and the clear, bright-blue water is exactly what you'd expect from an island paradise.

Unfortunately, Freeport has been hit by several tropical storms and major hurricanes over the years. Although it's a lovely port to visit, you can expect to see reminders, even years later, as construction projects are abandoned and the island struggles to rebuild.

The island chain of Bimini, which is part of the Bahamas, is also home to a cruise port. Fewer ships call there than call at Nassau or Freeport. Apart from beaches and resort-style experiences, there isn't much to do.

The port was thrust into the spotlight when Virgin Voyages developed its Bimini Beach Club on part of a property operated by Resorts World. When Virgin ships are in port, the only people who have access to the Beach Club are Virgin passengers. Cruisers who call on Bimini with other lines can purchase day passes as long as a Virgin ship is not docked that day.

Private islands

carnival cruise excursions bimini

Most of the cruise industry's private islands are located in the Bahamas. These carefully curated swaths of land can only be visited if you're sailing on a ship that has access.

When you're ashore, you can expect clean facilities, pristine beaches, shopping opportunities, free buffet lunches (usually a barbecue) and a variety of carefully controlled water-sports-centric shore excursions. Some of the larger, more developed private islands also offer water parks, horseback riding, zip lines and pools.

Private cabanas, villas and bungalows are also available, but they come at a premium and usually book up quickly. Some are even reserved for cruisers booked in suite accommodations on their ships.

When to book a Bahamas cruise

carnival cruise excursions bimini

Since the Bahamas is a year-round destination and lots of ships call there, supply is plentiful. That means prices tend to be more affordable, particularly for shorter Bahamas-only voyages.

For additional savings , consider booking your sailing in the first quarter of each year during wave season, when cruise lines offer fare discounts and other added-value perks like free Wi-Fi and beverage packages, discounted airfare or onboard credit for extras like spa treatments, shore excursions or dining in restaurants that charge fees for meals. Also keep an eye out for Black Friday deals toward the end of each year.

You might also be able to take advantage of resident rates if you live in Florida, military discounts or " kids sail free " promotions.

What to bring on a Bahamas cruise

Wondering what to pack ? For any cruise, you can't go wrong with resort-casual clothing and something for formal night if you'd like to participate. You'll also need underwear, toiletries, pajamas and footwear, as well as any travel documents required to board and clear immigration and customs.

For the Bahamas specifically, you'll want to prepare for warm, sunny weather by bringing a bathing suit and cover-up; flip-flops or sandals; and sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself during time outdoors. For those not heading to the beach, sundresses or shorts with T-shirts or tank tops are suitable attire.

If you plan to shop while ashore, most places do accept credit cards, but you might want to bring cash. Dollars are accepted in the Bahamas, so there's no need to exchange currency.

Bottom line

carnival cruise excursions bimini

If you cruise, it's almost certain you'll visit the Bahamas at some point in your travels. Although it can be crowded, the experience is an enjoyable one.

If you're looking for a fun warm-weather destination that offers plenty of beach time, active diversions, history and culture, shopping, gambling and excellent food, you won't be disappointed with a trip to this popular cruise region.
