About REO Speedwagon

birthplace

Coming from Champaign, Illinois, REO Speedwagon was formed in 1968. In the early ‘80s, REO Speedwagon is among the rock kings together with Styx and Journey . The band started off as a pair of students in University of Illinois. Neal Doughty and Alan Gratzer signed with Irving Azoff after graduating. Then they welcomed Gary Richrath, Gregg Philbin, and Terry Luttrell.

They released their self-titled debut in 1971 under Epic Records. The debut wasn’t enough to bring them to mainstream music. Luttrell left and was replaced by Kevin Cronin. They rolled the 1972’s “R.E.O.T.W.O.” but also failed. Cronin left and was replaced by Mike Murphy. After they released 1974’s “Ridin’ the Storm Out,” it was able to hit the Billboard charts, which soon followed all their major breaks.

Keep on Rollin’: How REO Speedwagon and Styx Scored Best-Yet Grosses on Their 2022 Co-Headlining Tour

Kevin Cronin, Tommy Shaw and the bands' managers on the four things that made Live and Unzoomed a smash success.

By Dave Brooks

Dave Brooks

Styx, REO Speedwagon

The older some guys get, the more they tend to exaggerate their exploits — and Styx ’s Tommy Shaw and REO Speedwagon ’s Kevin Cronin are no exception. In the promo video created for their Live and Unzoomed North American tour, promoted by Live Nation and booked by CAA, the longtime friends can’t help but oversell how much they’ve accomplished during the pandemic.

Cronin claims to have become a pyrotechnics expert after the video shows him burning hot dogs on his barbeque, while Shaw brags he’s been keeping himself sharp, only to accidentally send an axe flying at bandmate Lawrence Gowan while the two struggle to assemble IKEA furniture.

Trending on Billboard

More than 500,000 fans bought tickets for the dual headliner tour, which grossed an impressive $25 million in sales on the 44-date, May 31-Sept. 18 run, their fifth tour together, making it their top-grossing co-headlining tour yet. On average, 11,400 fans came out each night — enough to fill up most amphitheaters and small arenas — landing the tour the No. 30 spot on this month’s Billboard Boxscore Top Tours chart.

Bad Bunny Enters the Record Books With World’s Hottest Tour

Not bad for two groups with a combined catalog of more than 40 hits, both of which peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 in the 1980s. Rick Franks , Live Nation’s North American president of talent and touring, believes the tour’s success is in part due to their long-term partnership and says Styx and REO Speedwagon have performed more shows together as a package tour than any other groups this century. They have always done so as dual headliners, meaning that they alternate which act performs in the closing slot each night.

Package tours provide added value for fans, with ticket prices higher than those to see one act but significantly less than those for two. When two acts split production costs, they often can take home more money, too.

Styx is now led by guitarist Shaw, who joined the band in 1976, while REO Speedwagon is still fronted by founder Cronin. Gone is Styx founder Dennis Deyoung , who wrote many of the group’s hits but left in the late ’90s, as well as REO guitarist Gary Richrath , who died in 2015.

The two groups first toured together in 2000, but their bond solidified after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks inspired them to perform a series of charity concerts that raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the families of first responders and led to the creation of the charity Rock to the Rescue.

Here are four tips the bands and their managers say made this tour a record-breaking success.

Pick The Right Opener

Loverboy , the Canadian band led by Mike Reno whose hits include “Working for the Weekend” and “Turn Me Loose,” was both bands’ pick, but tour promoter Live Nation initially pushed back.

“Good songs, good band, everyone likes them – what is there push back on?” Styx manager Charlie Brusco says of the early back and forth with Live Nation’s Rick Franks , who relented after an intervention by Red Light Management owner and mega music manager Coran Capshaw .

“The word got out pretty quick with the fans on how good the Loverboy set was and we start getting reports that the venues were 70% full when the band took the stage at 7 p.m. and 85% full by 7:15,” Brusco says. “The result was three hours straight of great music from beginning to end.”

Make Everything Equal

Both REO Speedwagon and Styx hail from Illinois, came up in the late 1970s and 1980s and dominated mainstream rock radio with their ambitious anthems and riff-heavy tunes, often perfectly encapsulating their young fan’s feelings in songs that became instant classics.

Despite their similarities, the two acts never played together until 2000’s Arch Allies tour, named after the groups’ respectful rivalry with one another.

“There really isn’t a more accurate description of the relationship between the two bands,” says Brad Bissell , who booked the tour with Rod Essig out of CAA’s Nashville office. “The bands and their teams get along perfectly and there’s a deep mutual respect.”

The tour worked, REO Speedwagon manager Tom Consolo says, “because each side recognizes the importance of making sure every decision is balanced and equal,” noting that the bands rely on an independent production manager for the co-headline tour (instead of each band’s normal production boss). He continues, “so that if there is a call to be made, it’s not being made by one side,” but by a neutral person looking to do what is best for the tour.

The tour also works because both bands want the same thing — “a show that our fans are going to enjoy,” Shaw says. “We don’t want them to feel like one of us is favored over the other.”

Cronin adds, “The band that goes on in the middle slot gets the exact same production and stage space as the band who closes the show.”

Go On Sale Early

Brusco says he expected the tour to go on sale in late January, about four months before the May 31 opener at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan, but Franks insisted tickets go on sale six weeks earlier, during the second week of December.

“He told me, ‘I think that this way you’ll get a jump on everything else’ and he was right,” Brusco said. Knowing that 2022 was going to be packed after a two-year break, going on sale before the market flooded with competing options would give the tour an edge.

“December was perfect because so many people bought tickets for Christmas presents,” Brusco says, “and by this point in the pandemic, people were very certain that these shows were gonna happen.”

The lengthened sales window, coupled with the selection of Loverboy and buzz around the tour, led to big increases in attendance, as much as 40% for some shows. In 2017, the tour grossed $311,000 in ticket sales from 10,000 fans at Syracuse’s Lakeview Amphitheatre; this year, the tour grossed $520,000 from the venue with 14,000 tickets sold. The tour closer at Darling’s Waterfront Pavilion in Bangor, Maine grossed $241,000 on 4,900 tickets sold in 2017, while this year it grossed $462,000 with more than 8,000 tickets sold.

“At the urging of Rick Franks we announced and went on sale in early December 2021,” Bissell tells Billboard.  “(Live Nation’s) Erik Kammerer , who many at our company believe is a rising star, paid close attention to ticket pricing in real time and that made a big difference for everyone involved.”

Don’t Take Yourself Too Seriously

It’s been more than 20 years since Styx split with band founder and songwriter Dennis Deyoung, and Shaw said he’s now at peace with the breakup. The Deyoung-penned “Mr. Roboto,” the song that tore the band apart in the mid-1980s, has even been integrated back into their set list. The lead single from the group’s 1983 album K ilroy Was Here , “Mr. Roboto” was a commercial success but a divisive directional shift that pushed the band in a conceptual direction that Shaw and many other Styx fans felt was simply too weird for the 1980s rock scene.

That changed with the passage of time, and after a decade of streaming, a new fan base discovered the song and began requesting that it be added to the set list.

“We just disliked what [the song] did to the chemistry of the band,” Shaw says — and Styx never played it after [Shaw] rejoined in the 1990s. But as the song climbed Styx’s Spotify page (today it’s the second most listened to song behind “Renegade”), Shaw began to kick around the idea of bringing it back for the band’s 2018 tour.

“But we had no idea how to play it live,” says Shaw. Looking for ideas, he logged into Spotify and found a rock cover of the song by The Protomen . Shaw said it was the band’s rock-centric approach to the song on their excellent 2010 covers album The Cover Up that laid the groundwork for Styx’s new approach to the song.

“As soon as I heard that, I said, ‘That’s how we play it,’” Shaw says, “and we’ve been playing it like that ever since.”

Meet REO Speedwagon’s Production Manager: Video Premiere

The latest episode of Live Nation's Backstage With Crew Nation web series features REO Speedwagon frontman Kevin Cronin talking to production manager Michael Richter about his daily responsibilities.

You can watch the exclusive premiere of the video below.

In the clip, Cronin explains how REO Speedwagon likes to hold on to their road crew. Richter has been with the band for the past 14 years, noting he wasn't expecting the gig to last too long.

"They were looking for a production manager," Richter recalls. "The guy they had helping them was a friend of mine. And off I went to Reno, thinking I was gonna just do maybe five or six shows and that was it. ... Fourteen years later, here we are."

Richter's job involves making sure the show runs as smoothly as possible. Even before the trucks arrive, he works out the logistics with the venue. Then he's responsible for every detail - from sorting out the dressing rooms to the loading in and out of equipment to getting the band onstage. He also assisted with REO's recent guest shot on Netflix's Ozark , in which the full production was brought in, even though there wasn't as much room as usual.

"I could be the difference between us getting invited back or not," he says. "That weighs heavily on my mind every day. It's tough, because far be it for me to be the reason the band can't go back and play in whatever city. It's a tightrope walk sometimes with that."

Richter also discusses difficulty the coronavirus pandemic has placed on members of a crew. "I've spent 200 to 250 days a year on the road the last five years in a row," he says. "To go from being incredibly busy all the time to absolutely having nothing to do, it's hard to fathom."

There's also the financial hit they're taking. Richter expresses gratitude for Live Nation, which has committed $10 million with its Crew Nation initiative to help crew members who've found themselves out of work with

"From the band's standpoint, our crew, they're basically band members," Cronin adds. "We travel as a family, so when Crew Nation comes up and offers financial assistance to crew guys, they're kind of helping the bands too."

Band played favorites from past and even some songs that were on side B, that was really cool if you know their music. Still high energy and David is still the man on his Gibson's and fenders. Will see again, but never at Harrahs Cherokee NC. Crowd was too drunk, out of control, and security lost control of the crowd.

Awesome Show, one of those bands that sound better live. Almost 2 hours, played our favorites, must see!

Share stage with Firehouse, another great band rock the house for 45 minutes.

Third in the lineup was John Waite, forgot how good of a vocalist he is, would go to another show even if he is the only headliner.

Train, REO Speedwagon announce co-headlining North American tour

Today, two iconic hitmakers in Train and REO Speedwagon have announced that they will be teaming up for a co-headlining tour of North America this summer.

Dubbed the “Summer Road Trip 2024 Tour,” the run is set to be one for the books. With more than 50 million albums sold worldwide, 32 songs on Billboard’s Hot 100, and 28 albums on the Billboard 200 albums chart between them, fans nationwide will have a chance to witness epic sets from two of the hardest-working, fun-loving, non-stop touring bands as they perform hours of hits featuring chart-topping anthems and timeless fan favorites.

Produced by Live Nation, the 44-city tour kicks off on July 8th in Somerset, Wisconsin at Somerset Amphitheater, making stops in Chicago, Toronto, New York, Houston, San Francisco, Los Angeles and more before wrapping up on September 11th in Phoenix, Arizona at Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre. Joining Train and REO Speedwagon on the road as direct support on all dates is special guest Yacht Rock Revue.

To celebrate the tour, Train and REO Speedwagon will take the stage at Los Angeles’ famed Whisky a Go Go nightclub on the Sunset Strip this Thursday, February 1st for an intimate sneak preview concert. Additionally, the bands will be stopping by Jimmy Kimmel Live! this Wednesday, January 31 for a very special collaboration, which marks their first-ever performance together on stage. Jimmy Kimmel Live! airs on ABC at 11:35p/10:35c.

Of the tour, Train frontman Pat Monahan shared: “ When I was younger I heard a band called REO Speedwagon and fell in love with their numerous, infectious hit songs. Years later I met Kevin Cronin, and thank goodness he’s as great a person as he is a songwriter. This tour won’t just be a great time with great people, but a tour that will have a ton of familiar songs to most generations. I will be wishing I was in the audience as much as I’ll love being on the stage .”

REO Speedwagon’s Kevin Cronin said: “ Pat Monahan and I have done several benefit shows over the years, and now we get to take out our bands for a summer full of music and fun. I love the idea of bringing together people of all ages, who share a common love for well-crafted songs and high energy live performances. The REO boys are stoked about this tour .”

Fans can gain first access to the artist presales beginning Wednesday, January 31st at 10am local time until Thursday, February 1 at 10pm local time. Additional presales will run throughout the week ahead of the general onsale beginning Friday, February 2 at 10am local time at SaveMeSanFrancisco.com and REOSpeedwagon.com .

About Train

Train is a multi-GRAMMY Award-winning, diamond-selling band from San Francisco that has had 14 songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and 13 albums on the Billboard 200 chart. Train’s climb to the top began in 1994, as the original 5-member band tenaciously built a loyal hometown following, leading up to their debut self-titled album released by Columbia in 1998. The tumbling wordplay of “Meet Virginia” gave them their first unlikely radio hit, and 2001’s Drops of Jupiter broke them to multi-platinum status thanks to the double-GRAMMY-winning title song that spent 10 months in the Top 40, has been certified RIAA 7x platinum, and earned the 2001 GRAMMY Award for Best Rock Song. The group won another GRAMMY in 2011 for their global hit “Hey, Soul Sister” from their multi-platinum album Save Me, San Francisco (2009), which was the No.1 best-selling smash and most downloaded single of 2010, achieved RIAA Diamond status in 2021 and now 11x platinum, and in 2022 surpassed one billion streams on Spotify. Train has sold more than 10 million albums and 30 million tracks worldwide, with multiple platinum/gold citations, including three GRAMMY Awards, two Billboard Music Awards, and dozens of other honors. They’ve had 24 Top 10 songs across the Billboard charts and six Top 10 albums on the Billboard 200 chart including Drops of Jupiter (2001), My Private Nation (2003), California 37 (2012), Bulletproof Picasso (2014), For Me, It’s You (2016), and a girl a bottle a boat (2017). Train released their critically acclaimed 11th studio album, AM Gold , in May 2022 and most recently released a new song “I Know” ft. Tenille Townes and Bryce Vine, which marked their 27th career entry on Billboard’s Adult Pop Airplay chart.

Train frontman, Pat Monahan , partakes in other ventures outside of music, including his award-winning wine portfolio, Save Me, San Francisco Wine Co, which was created in 2011 and has sold over 10 million bottles and won over 100 medals. Proceeds from his wine business support Family House, a San Francisco charity that supports families of children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.  Monahan has appeared on television and in film with credits that include the 2021 Hallmark Channel original movie, Christmas in Tahoe , inspired by Train’s album of the same name, which he executive produced and starred, Dr. Ken , 90210 , CBS’s Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum P.I., The Voice , American Idol , and The Bachelor .

About REO Speedwagon

Formed in 1967, signed in 1971, and fronted by iconic vocalist Kevin Cronin since 1972, REO Speedwagon’s unrelenting drive, as well as non-stop touring and recording jump-started the burgeoning rock movement in the Midwest. Platinum albums and radio staples soon followed, setting the stage for the release of the band’s explosive Hi Infidelity in 1980, which contained the massive hit singles “Keep On Loving You” and “Take It On the Run.” That landmark album spent 15 weeks in the No. 1 slot and has since earned the RIAA’s coveted 10X Diamond Award for surpassing sales of 10 million units in the United States.

From 1977 to 1989, REO Speedwagon released nine consecutive albums all certified Platinum or higher. To date, REO Speedwagon has sold more than 40 million albums around the globe, and Cronin and bandmates Bruce Hall, Dave Amato, Bryan Hitt, Derek Hilland, and most recent addition Matt Bissonette, are electrifying audiences worldwide in concert with hits and fan-favorites such as “Ridin’ The Storm Out,” “Can’t Fight This Feeling,” “Time For Me To Fly,” “Roll With The Changes,” “Keep On Loving You,” “Take It On the Run,” and many, many more. More recently, REO has been featured in Season Three of the hit Netflix series, Ozark, with an episode entitled: “Kevin Cronin Was Here.” Cronin sang a duet with Dolly Parton on his number-one hit, “Keep on Loving You” for her star-studded Rockstar album, which featured a who’s who of rock luminaries including Sir Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Sting, to mention just a few. Cronin performed on the 2022 season finale of American Idol , is a regular guest with the Jim Irsay Collection band, and is currently putting the finishing touches on his memoir, “Roll With The Changes… my life within and without REO Speedwagon.” REO Speedwagon launched their first Las Vegas residency in November of 2023, the sold-out “An Evening of Hi Infidelity …and More!,” with return engagements set for May, and again in October of 2024. The band is active in numerous charitable endeavors including the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, Music Drives Us, and Moffitt Cancer Center.

REO Speedwagon’s “Ridin’ the Storm Out”

REO Speedwagon

REO Speedwagon

Like other Midwest bands in the 1970s, REO Speedwagon was constantly on the road, eventually becoming a regional star attraction. Lead singer Kevin Cronin and guitarist Gary Richrath wrote the classic rock staple “Ridin’ the Storm Out” in 1973 when REO played Tulagi in Boulder.

“We were kids—20 going on 15. We had a record deal, and we were goo-goo eyed,” guitarist Gary Richrath recalled. “In combination with that, we were romantics from Illinois where there are no hills—we hadn’t been far enough west to see mountains. And we freaked. We were driving across the plains saying, ‘Shit, look at that stuff!’ We were dying when we got to Boulder.

“Kevin and I were like two brothers. We did everything together at the time. We got a few provisions to go up to the Flatirons to hike around. Our tour manager said, ‘You’re not going up there’—a big blizzard was coming in. We ditched him and went anyway.”

“We ended up getting lost,” Cronin continued. “It started snowing, and we thought for a moment that we were goners.”

“It was confusing for a couple of kids from the Midwest,” Richrath said. “We got nervous and scared and walked around in circles for an hour. Then we saw a flagpole in a park and ran to it. Our road manager had brains enough to sit and wait for us. It was an inspiring moment, walking in the woods and hoping to get our asses out of there. The next morning, I woke up and said to Kevin, ‘I’ve got some lyrics. Let’s work on them.’

“Kevin always says he knows a new hit when he writes one. I didn’t quite see ‘Ridin’ the Storm Out’ becoming the stalwart REO song of the ‘70s, but now you’ve got to give the song the respect it deserves.”’

REO Speedwagon’s first million-seller was a 1977 live album titled You Get What You Pay For , and the “Ridin’ the Storm Out” single reached No. 94 on the Billboard charts. REO became America’s No. 1 rock band in 1980, reaching a zenith with a carefully crafted blend of hard rock and high-energy ballads such as “Keep on Lovin’ You” and “Can’t Fight This Feeling.”

“We weathered neglect from New York and Los Angeles music circles, critical drubbings, personnel changes and years of opening-act status,” Cronin said. “‘Ridin’ the Storm Out’ was the one thing that held the band together for all those years. It closed our shows for over a decade.”

Trains everywhere.

written by REO Speedwagon June 24, 2024

Hi friends,

So, everywhere I look these days I see trains … freight trains, passenger trains, and starting the week of July 8, my new favorite band Train in Somerset, Wisconsin on 7-8, Indianapolis on 7-10, Cincinnati on 7-12, and on 7-13, my sweet hometown Chicago, the South Side of Chicago no less, just a few miles from where I grew up, down the road from Oak Lawn, in Tinley Park!

Our Summer Road Trip tour is getting off to a roaring start, in the heart of REO Country. I feel so strongly that fans of Train will dig the REO setlist, and same for the REO fans being wowed by all the beautifully written and performed Train songs, great playing by the Train band, and the amazing voice of my buddy Patrick Monahan.

REO is currently spending the month of June with our old friends, special guests Night Ranger and Levon. I am grateful to be sharing the stage with bands whose music we love, and who we love personally. At this point in my life, I want to surround myself with nice solid people, no tour drama, and good fun … that is how we roll. We have a night off in St Louis tomorrow, and tour manager Ken Denson has planned a full-band outing to see the Cardinals play a home game at beautiful Busch Stadium. All six of us will be indulging in plenty of peanuts and Crackers Jacks tomorrow night!

Some of you may remember the awesome multi-band shows that REO headlined at Busch Stadium in 1978 and ‘82. I would love to hear your memories of those shows in the comments section here, as my memories of those concerts almost seem surreal! I need you to remind me that it all actually happened!

I look forward to seeing you at one of the final three June shows, in Evansville, Indiana and Decatur, Illinois on Tuesday and Wednesday … and next Friday on the BMO Stage at Summerfest in the great city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Rock on, and look out for oncoming Trains! … kc

PS. My feet will undoubtedly take me on my usual hike to the St Louis Arch this afternoon. It is a beautiful Midwest day here … actually I am gonna head out as soon as I press send!

See you guys there! kc
