Review | Manchester United Museum & Stadium Tour! How Good is it?

Categories England , Manchester , U.K

Manchester United and Old Trafford are one of the most famous teams and stadiums in the world, so it’s pretty cool that you can really easily book and go on an Old Trafford Stadium Tour and visit the Manchester United Museum.

In fact, doing a tour of Manchester United stadium is probably even easier than you think, they literally have time slots available all day when matches are not on and the tickets are not that expensive either.

I went recently with my stepsons who are 6 & 8 and we had a great time! I realised I couldn’t move to Manchester and not visit the legendary Manchester United Stadium and even as a non-supporter (although I left feeling like a supporter), I had goosebumps throughout because of all that we saw on the Man Utd Stadium Tour.

So let me tell you how to book a Manchester United stadium tour, the Old Trafford tour price, what to expect from a Man Utd tour and answer the question ‘is a Manchester United Tour good?’

Let’s start with how to get Manchester Utd tour tickets and how much they cost! Luckily, they are easier to get than match tickets!

I booked our tickets through Get Your Guide which is a booking platform I use a lot and trust!

Booking these tickets makes it really easy to check stadium tour availability by each day and time, they don’t charge any extra, AND you get free cancellation up to 24 hours before you book which is really helpful!

Manchester United Tour Ticket Prices:

Adult: £27.00

Child 5-15: £15.00

Child 4 & under: Free

Senior 65+: £15.00

What does the Manchester United Tour Ticket include?

The ticket gives access to the Manchester United Museum which you can visit in your own time, and it gives you a 70-minute tour of the stadium with a guide .

Souvenir wise, you are given a branded lanyard when you show your tickets where the ticket goes inside, this can be taken home with you and therefore acts as a bit of a free souvenir .

What To Expect from an Old Trafford Stadium Tour

When you book your ticket online you’ll get an email confirmation to say you must get there 30 minutes before the start time , this is something to keep in mind when planning your Manchester day out!

The reason you are asked to get there early is mainly so you have time to visit the museum before the tour starts and the time you book the tour for is the time your group guided tour starts.

If you don’t get there just on time, then you can do the guided tour and visit the museum at the end.

Manchester United Stadium Tour, Stadium Entrance

Manchester United Stadium Tour Parking

The only car park at Old Trafford Stadium open on non-match days is East Car Park E2 ( google maps location here ) so you have to head here. When I visited it the entrance was manned, the super friendly guys told me where to park and there are plenty of disabled access spaces.

The car park is at the front of the stadium and where the Megastore is located.

Manchester United Stadium Tour, E2 car park stadium entrance

To get to the museum and where the guided Manchester United tour starts you follow the path around to the right, following the arrow signs to the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand Entrance .

Manchester United Stadium Tour, Path to Sir Alex Ferguson Stand

Here you’ll get a security scan, queue up inside, show your online ticket and be given a paper ticket and lanyard.

Then you go upstairs towards the Man Utd Museum and by Red Cafe at Old Trafford which is a great place to go back to after the tour has finished.

Manchester United Stadium Tour, Red Cafe Entrance

Manchester United Museum

In order to get to where the Manchester Stadium tour starts you have to go through the museum. This is why you’ll get email confirmation telling you to get to the stadium 30 minutes before your ticket time because the time on your ticket is the literal time your guided tour starts you need to be at the end of the museum and meet your guide.

As we entered the museum we could choose to get a photo with a green screen background which could then be purchased at the end.

This was pretty cool as at the end of the tour in the Megastore you can see the photo and pick the different backgrounds , there was a sunset stadium background, normal stadium background and you could choose which player was next to you, of course, we had to get a photo with Ronaldo printed!

Manchester United Stadium Tour, Museum

Walking through the museum doesn’t take long but if you don’t have time or want to spend more time looking, you can return at the end of the tour as there are no time restrictions on access to Old Trafford Museum.

The museum is really interesting though and you should give yourself at least 20 minutes to look around.

Ready to check availability and book tickets? Do it here!

Manchester United Stadium Tour

Tours start every 10-15 minutes and staff will be calling your ticket time so make sure you listen out and head to the end of the museum which is downstairs. Then go to the counter and collect a multimedia device for each person which had a lanyard to go around our necks.

This is used at various points on the tour to watch a video or read more about where you are, this is especially good for visitors who do not understand English well and can’t understand what the guide is saying as the multimedia device can be set in multiple languages. Or those hard at hearing who can’t hear the guide.

Manchester United Stadium Tour, Multimedia guide

Our group was pretty big at about 20 people but it never felt too big.

Our guide introduced himself to start off the 70-minute tour and told us a bit about what to expect from the tour and the multimedia devices. We had 2 guides , one who stayed at the front and did all of the explaining and another who stayed at the back to ensure we all stayed together, both were available to chat to as we walked around the stadium from place to place.

Manchester United Stadium Tour, start of tour in stadium

To start the tour off properly we went up into the stadium , this is where the multimedia devices were really cool and this was probably their best use. Of course, the stadium was empty but with the devices, it showed what it looks like busy and it followed the stadium as we moved the device around to different parts of the stadium.

Manchester United Stadium Tour, multimedia guide showing stadium full

We went back inside and to be honest, we did spend a fair amount of time inside the stadium walking under the seats to get to another part of the stadium. Definitely keep this in mind if you have small children with you who don’t like walking much.

Manchester United Stadium Tour, walking inside stadium

We had some good photo opportunities and the first one started as we were in the corner of the stadium where the disabled seating is, this spot gives a really great corner view of the stadium and there is plenty of space to spread out and get photos with no one in the background.

Manchester United Stadium Tour, corner photo of pitch

We went back inside again and walked for a while and this is when we got to probably the best bit of the tour – the changing rooms !

It was really cool to be in a part of the stadium where usually only the players go and seeing all of the shirts in the changing rooms was definitely a highlight.

We had plenty of time in here to take photos and everyone was really good at queuing for the seats, of course, Ronaldo was a popular one, and let each other take photos. It was busy in the room with all of us in but not too bad.

Manchester United Stadium Tour, inside players changing room

We walked out the way the players would to the tunnel . This was the most interactive part of the tour because the guide got all the kids to line up in 2 lines and the parents/adults to start on the side and then we clapped them out onto the edge of the pitch.

Some of the kids on my tour were really big football fans and they loved this.

Manchester United Stadium Tour, inside players tunnel

At the end of the tunnel, we got to start right by the pitch in the corner which was the corner between the West Stand and Sir Bobby Charlton Stand and again take some photos, these photos were better because we had the grass right behind us.

Then, we walked up the side of the pitch to the dugout , we were allowed to sit on the manager’s seats which was also a very cool and unique opportunity.

I also loved seeing the pitch front on from this level and got some great photos.

Manchester United Stadium Tour, walking up side of pitch on tour

Down the side of the dugout, we walked to the media and press room , again this was another cool opportunity and we could sit at the media table and have photos taken, except this photo had to be done by somewhere working there and the photo had to be purchased .

This was the only part of the tour where we were restricted from taking a photo which I think is fair and it’s really good there were no other photo restrictions on the Old Trafford stadium tour.

Manchester United Stadium Tour, media room

After this, we headed back inside and the tour ended outside the Megastore which is also the gift shop and where you can purchase the photo that was taken on arrival to the museum.

Red Cafe at Old Trafford

After we finished the tour we headed back round to the Sir Alex Ferguson stand and went to the Red Cafe at Old Trafford.

There are 2 parts to this , there’s a cafe as you walk in selling drinks and some snack food like cakes and crisps and then there is a sit-down restaurant . This was quite busy when we got there at lunchtime in the school holidays but it’s definitely a cool way to end a memorable visit to Manchester United Stadium!

Manchester United Stadium Tour, inside Red Cafe at Old Trafford

Overall thoughts and review

I honestly really loved it, even as someone who hasn’t been into football for years I got chills and goosebumps just seeing and hearing how big this club is. I loved the museum for seeing the names of older players and the guide told us a lot about past players too, and then my stepsons loved it for seeing the names of the current players.

We started the tour at the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand and went all the way around to the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand so we did see a lot including the changing rooms, tunnel, dugout and media room.

My brother who is a big football fan told me he was so jealous of me going on the Manchester United stadium tour and it made me think that many people might not realise just how easy and accessible it really is to do which is why I wanted to write this post and tell you because it’s not hard to book at all and there is a lot of availability.

The only downside I’d say is that of course, you can’t go on the pitch, which might be disappointing for some and also that there is a lot of walking between corridors and through the areas under the seats so that’s just something to keep in mind if you have difficulty walking or have young children.

I hope this review and recap has helped you decide what to expect from a Manchester United Stadium Tour, and that you should book tickets for an Old Trafford tour here!

Explained: Manchester United’s train problem – and how they want to fix it

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - OCTOBER 07: An aerial view of Old Trafford before the Premier League match between Manchester United and Brentford FC at Old Trafford on October 07, 2023 in Manchester, England. (Photo by Michael Regan/Getty Images)

As Manchester United and Trafford Council work together on plans to regenerate the Old Trafford area, with a rebuilt or revamped football stadium at its heart, a key issue needs resolving: transport.

If United want to increase the capacity to 90,000 and beyond, something Sir Jim Ratcliffe, their co-owner, said he wants to do, they need to significantly improve transport links to and from the stadium.

In its current state, the roads around Old Trafford are clogged on matchdays, car parking is too limited, and the tram capacity is already stretched, all of which causes disruption on a large scale to residents .

One issue now being discussed is the rail freight terminal a stone’s throw from Old Trafford, just behind the Stretford End, which links to the train line connecting Liverpool to Manchester.

In an ideal world, and as part of the wider Trafford Wharfside proposals, United want to turn this into a train station that can help take thousands of supporters to and from Old Trafford on a matchday.

The club already has a train stop behind the South Stand, known as the Old Trafford Halt, but it has not been in use since December 2017 after United requested it be closed down due to security concerns.

What’s happening with the freight terminal at the moment?

The site to the west of Old Trafford is owned by several entities, shown in the graphic below: Manchester United , Freightliner, DB Cargo International and H Company 2. Alderney Urban Investments, which is owned by United, also has leaseholder interest in the section owned by H Company 2.

man utd tour of stadium

On the site are containers, a freight loading area and the rail tracks. According to the terminal’s website, it is a “crucial rail and distribution hub in the North West” and “handles approximately 20 daily Freightliner services to and from the UK’s deep sea ports”.

In 2010, it was reported that United spent around £11million to buy the leasehold on the part of the site for which H Company 2 has the freehold. According to the club’s filings, their lease runs until 2071.

“Properties have been acquired at different times for strategic reasons looking into the future,” George Johnstone, United’s then group property manager, said at the time.

“We have no specific plans for these sites at the moment, but our owners feel it is prudent to prepare for the future when they might be needed for sports-related development.”

Why do Manchester United want to turn it into a train station?

A rebuilt or revamped stadium with an increased capacity would require a new way to get people in via routes other than roads. One of those routes could be via trains from Manchester Piccadilly Station in the city centre.

Trams currently serve the Trafford Bar and Wharfside stops, but they are at capacity on matchdays and the number of fans who can fit on a tram is far fewer than a train.

If the freight terminal was moved elsewhere, the site and line could be redeveloped as a train station for the stadium and broader redevelopment.

What has Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, said?

Burnham, who sits on the task force exploring the options for regenerating the Trafford area, with the building of a new stadium at the heart of those plans, has supported moving the freight terminal.

On May 16, Burnham appeared on BBC Radio Manchester and said moving its location elsewhere would benefit not only the football club but also the Greater Manchester population.

“There’s a freight terminal right behind Old Trafford, which means freight trains (need to) come through Piccadilly and Oxford Road,” Burnham said.

“Here is the opportunity to take it away from Old Trafford and put it into Port Salford or Parkside, a scheme in development in Wigan, and then Manchester United have an easier space to use with regards to the redevelopment.

“This is not about public money being used improperly. It’s a win-win opportunity.”

man utd tour of stadium

Who would pay for it?

United are actively exploring whether public money, via taxpayers, can be used towards the rebuilding or redevelopment of Old Trafford. The Athletic has already detailed why public funding being used towards a new stadium is unlikely to get off the ground .

But if it was used to benefit the wider community, as part of the regeneration project that would see new leisure facilities, business hubs and new houses built, then it could be used to pay for the freight terminal to be turned into a train station.

Ahead of United’s match against Arsenal on May 12, Burnham met with Sir Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, and the pair discussed the club’s plans.

“He was in a good mood,” Burnham said. “This could have benefits for both of those schemes and the Port of Liverpool. Then if you were to regenerate the Old Trafford area and link it to the plans Trafford Council have, it could be a scheme that benefits everybody in the north west.”

Burnham also revealed that Starmer appeared to rule out public money being used towards the stadium if his party were to win the General Election on July 4.

“It would have to be a public-private partnership,” Burnham added. “But it would have to be the club to fund the stadium and associated Manchester United facilities.”

How would United resolve the outstanding security issue?

The Old Trafford Halt station was closed by United because it stopped right at the stadium, which posed a risk when security measures were tightened at sports grounds. It was impossible to check people before they arrived at the stadium, nor was it feasible to check people as they boarded the train.

But if the freight terminal site was to be turned into a new railway station, it is such a large space that there would be room to check people between them disembarking from the trains and entering the stadium.

What happens if a solution can’t be found?

While it wouldn’t stop Old Trafford from being rebuilt or redeveloped, a failure to find a solution would certainly limit what the club could increase its capacity to.

Transport is viewed by those inside the club as key to the success of the wider project. If the freight terminal remains in its existing state, then United would need to think differently about transport and how they manage people coming to Old Trafford.

Bayern Munich, for example, have a car park underneath the Allianz Arena, so there are ways to work around the issue, but the roads in and out of the stadium when United play at home are already full of cars, so increasing the number of them would only add to the traffic problems.

Man found guilty of headbutting Roy Keane during Arsenal vs Man United match

An Arsenal fan who headbutted Manchester United legend Roy Keane after a Premier League match between the two teams has been found guilty of assault.

Scott Law, 43, attacked the former midfielder at the Emirates Stadium while he was on pundit duty for Sky Sports on September 3 last year.

Ex-Ireland international Keane told Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court the incident happened when he and fellow pundit Micah Richards were walking down for the final match analysis after Arsenal’s 3-1 win.

Lifelong Gooner Law, who told the court his season ticket was his ‘prized possession’ before being handed a three-year stadium ban, vowed to appeal his conviction.

Giving evidence, Keane said: ‘There was lots of noise and shouting, as you would expect at a football match. I was just walking and, before I knew it, I was hit. I felt the contact and fell back through some doors.

‘I was absolutely not expecting it. The only way I can describe it is that I was in shock. I didn’t expect it to happen, not when I was in my workplace.

‘Micah then gets hold of someone. He was just trying to get a grip of him and make sure he didn’t run off.

‘I was saying “Call the police”. For about 15 or 20 seconds Micah was holding him up against a wall (to stop) him getting away.’

Undated handout photo issued by Crown Prosecution Service of Scott Law, who has been handed a three-year football banning order after headbutting TV pundit Roy Keane at a match. The 43-year-old was found guilty of common assault after he and Mr Keane clashed on September 3 last year. The fracas began when Mr Keane and fellow Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards were walking to do the final match analysis after Arsenal's 3-1 victory over Manchester United, the trial at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court heard. A video played to the court showed Law, an Arsenal season ticket holder, turning to the Sky Sports broadcast box after VAR ruled out a goal for Manchester United.

Law, of Waltham Abbey, Essex, admitted making a ‘w***er sign’ towards Keane and demonstrated the gesture for the benefit of the court.

But he claimed he was rushing to the toilet when the football hardman ambushed him and called him a ‘fat c**t’.

Law said in the statement that he moved his head forward in a ‘pre-emptive strike’ to defend himself against the former Sunderland manager.

His barrister Charles Sherrard KC claimed Keane was the aggressor, suggesting ‘the red mist descended’ when he was taunted by home supporters.

He said Keane was captured on camera using ‘gratuitous violence’ against Law by ‘smashing his nose’ with his elbow.

Mr Sherrard asked Keane: ‘How are you stopping someone getting away with an elbow to the face?’

The ex-footballer replied: ‘That’s to stop him getting away. I’m trying to grab him. I’ve got bags in my hands, I was trying to grab him to stop him from getting out.

‘I must have said nine or 10 times: “Someone call the police”.’

Law denied but was convicted of common assault by District Judge Angus Hamilton.

06.06.24 Picture shows Scott Law at Highbury Corner Magistrates Court. Mr Law headbutted Football hardamn Roy Keane at the Emirates Staduim. Today a verdict will be heard see story Central News 0207 236 0116

The judge said he believed Law had been ‘untruthful about what happened’ during the match.

He continued: ‘There was no reason Mr Keane should have picked on him in particular.’

Keane ‘was calm and not agitated’ when he left the studio, he added.

The judge said Keane’s reputation as the so-called ‘hard man of football’, was ‘years ago and was confined to the football pitch’.

‘I’m sure Mr Law assaulted Mr Keane.’

Law, a civil engineer who said his Emirates Stadium season ticket was his ‘prized possession’, was given a three-year football banning order.

As well as being barred from attending football matches, Law was ordered to complete 80 hours of unpaid work, and must pay legal costs of £650 plus a victim surcharge of £114.

Kevin Christie, Crown Prosecution Service London North Football Lead Prosecutor, said: ‘This gratuitous and senseless act of violence was completely unacceptable.

‘When anyone attends a football match, either to work or to support a team, they should be able to feel safe and secure in that environment.

‘The Crown Prosecution Service works in close partnership with the police to ensure that all perpetrators of violence at football grounds are brought to justice.’

Football pundit and former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane, leaves Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court, north London, where Scott Law, 43, is accused of headbutting the football pundit, at the Emirates Stadium on September 3 last year. Picture date: Wednesday May 29, 2024. The charge relates to an incident at Emirates Stadium on September 3 last year, following Arsenal's 3-1 victory over Manchester United, where Keane was working as a pundit. Footage was posted on social media of fellow Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards stepping in to calm an apparent confrontation. See PA story COURTS Keane. Photo credit should read: James Manning/PA Wire

Prosecutor Simon Jones KC told the court Law was ‘intent on violence’ towards Mr Keane.

He said: ‘Roy Keane was about to go live on air to millions to give full-time analysis of that game – the idea that he would seek confrontation in the way that has been described lacks credibility.

‘It cannot be reasonable, we suggest, that for a headbutt with such force as to firstly bruise and to then impact on Mr Keane to the extent of him flying through the double doors, that cannot be justified or lawful.

‘Why on earth would Roy Keane run himself into this man? Of course the court will inevitably want to consider the fact that Mr Law could simply have walked away.

‘He chose not to do that. He chose to give Roy Keane no chance, and he head-butted Roy Keane forcefully.’

Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards leaves Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court, north London, where Scott Law, 43, is accused of headbutting football pundit and former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane, at the Emirates Stadium on September 3 last year. Picture date: Friday May 31, 2024. PA Photo. Footage was posted on social media of fellow Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards stepping in to calm an apparent confrontation.See PA story COURTS Keane. Photo credit should read: Lucy North/PA Wire

Mr Jones added that Law was ‘hyped up’ and saw red ‘when he sees the man who captained Manchester United’.

‘From the moment that he saw Roy Keane, we say he was intent on violence – that is the reality of the case,’ he went on.

‘The idea that putting your head towards the ground is defending yourself when you can either walk away or walk around, or indeed just put your hands up, is lacking credibility.’

Reading a statement on behalf of Law outside court, his defence lawyer said: ‘I was found guilty by a judge who excluded me at times from my own trial.

‘The prosecution deprived me of key footage for my defence.

‘I most definitely plan to appeal this conviction. I will not be making any further statements.’
