You can plan  Baja vacations for any time of year, but the best time to visit Baja is from December through April. Our Baja cruises primarily operate during these months, taking advantage of pleasant weather and sailing conditions while avoiding the hottest summer months and the hurricane season. Many cruise itineraries will focus on the whale watching season in the winter then shift to whale sharks and the mobula ray migration in the spring.

Baja Year-Round Wildlife 

Before we go into month by month wildlife seasonality, know that Baja is home to abundant wildlife year-round with endless animal experiences no matter what season you visit. Baja is known as the Galapagos of the North, after all, and Jacques Cousteau famously dubbed the Sea of Cortez ‘the world’s aquarium’- for good reason!

At any time of year you can see super pods of common and bottlenose dolphins plus orca, fin, and pilot whales. California sea lions are famously playful and abundant in these waters, as are sea turtles, sun stars, sea urchins and more than 900 colorful fish species. A productive ocean with hundreds of miles of coastline also makes for a birders’ paradise, home to numerous endemic and resident birds like cormorant, pelicans, frigatebirds, boobies and many more.

Baja in January

January in Baja is warm, sunny and dry; the perfect escape from North America’s cold and snowy winter. Water temperatures in January are chilly, but the cooler air temperatures are perfect for hiking and sailing Sea of Cortez. The colder water may not be a favorite among snorkelers and divers, but because it creates an abundance of plankton, it IS a favorite among whales, and in turn, makes it a great month for whale watching. Expedition cruise season really kicks off, and with prime weather and wildlife, January is a popular time for travel in Baja.

Baja Wildlife in January:

• A bulk of the gray whales are arriving to Bahía Magdalena to mate and calve.
• Migratory humpback whale babies are born.

Baja Weather in January:

• The start of the Baja’s best weather, with low rainfall and pleasant daily temperatures.
• Air temperatures in the 70s.
• On average January has the coolest water temperatures of the year; in the high 60s to low 70s.
• Cooler ocean currents bring oxygen and nutrient-rich water to the surface where they mix with abundant sunlight resulting in a bloom of food for marine animals.
• The beginning of the peak season for expedition cruises.

Baja in February

February is the best time to see whales in Baja. If you want to witness gray whale mothers and their newborns, this is the height of their calving season. Baja California in February remains fairly cool with cloud cover. So when you aren’t whale watching, you can you can enjoy other adventure activities like hiking, biking, camping, horseback riding and more.

Baja Wildlife in February:

• Peak month for grey whale watching in Magdalena Bay and San Ignacio Lagoon.
• A great time to spot humpback whales and sperm whales.
• Humpback whale babies start getting more playful.
• The elusive blue whale arrives to the islands off Loreto from the deep Pacific to give birth, raise their young and mate.
• Fin whales can be seen year round, but in the spring months the resident population can be found closer to shore and easier to spot.

Baja Weather in February:

• The higher levels of plankton during this time create a thriving food chain that lures migratory whales, other marine mammals and birdlife to Baja.
• On average, Baja California in February has the coolest water temps of the year in the high 60s low 70s.

Baja in March

A popular month for spring breakers, whale watchers and birders, Baja in March can be busy and lacks travel deals. Expect sunny days with mild temps getting warmer as spring arrives, plus gray whale and humpback whale viewing opportunities through mid-March.

• Sea of Cortez resident fin whales can be seen closer to shore.
• By late March many gray whales have moved on, and whale excursions into the Pacific coast’s Bahía Magdalena are no longer offered.
• Early March, blue whales can still be spotted in the waters off Loreto.
• Best time of year to see the red-billed tropicbird and blue-footed boobies.
• Hermann’s gulls begin to arrive to their arid breeding island, courtship begins.
• Large numbers of whale sharks.

• Water temperatures average 70.
• Air temperatures in the mid 70s.

Baja in April

The migratory whale season wraps up by April. The weather in April remains comfortable but temperatures continue to rise as summer approaches. This is a great time to find a deal on a small ship cruise while still enjoying the wealth of other wildlife Baja has to offer: dolphin pods, whale sharks, resident whale species, mobula rays and more,

Baja Wildlife in April: 

• The new gray whale mothers will only leave Baja’s western coast when their calves are ready for the long journey, this can sometimes extend into April.
• A great time to see a variety of whales including humpbacks, fin, minke, sperm, bryde’s and pilot.
• Migratory gray and humpback whales begin to depart the region so sightings of adult groups as they migrate north are possible.
• The great Isla Rasa wildlife spectacle is in full swing – the nesting of thousands of Heermann’s gulls and elegant and royal terns.
• Mobula rays begin their spring time breeding migration to Baja.
• Popular time for whale sharks.

Baja Weather in April:

• Air temperatures in the high 80s.  
• Water temperatures are in the upper 70s.

Baja in May

Considered a shoulder season month in Baja. May has good weather, less people, and some available discounts since it’s after the high-season but before the late summer storm season. May is another dry month in Baja with almost no rain. You can expect clear skies with not much cloud cover, so don’t forget the sunscreen. With most of the migratory whales gone, expedition cruises operating in May will focus on marine life, highlighting the whale shark and mobula ray seasons.

Baja Wildlife in May:

• Mobula rays begin to congregate in the tens of thousands.
• Occasionally, gray whale mothers and their calves are known to stay in Baja well into May.
• Birders will enjoy opportunities to view blue-footed boobies, red-billed tropicbirds, pelicans, frigatebirds, cormorants, terns, great blue herons, ibis, whimbrels and willets.
• Amazing elegant terns viewing on the Isla Raza bird sanctuary.
• The last month of the La Paz official whale shark season.

Baja Weather in May:

• One of Baja’s driest months with almost no rain at all.
• Air temperatures in the high 80s increasing as spring progresses.

Baja in June

There’s no denying that summer in Baja is hot. If plan a trip to Baja in June, find a room with AC and don’t be too far from the ocean or pool. Summer is popular for surfing when temperatures can reach into the nineties, and many will focus on underwater activities like scuba diving for an up-close look at the mobula ray migration, hammerhead sharks and more. On land, Todos Santos, and the western side of the peninsula is a popular region this time of year as it is cooled by the breezes from the Pacific.

Baja Wildlife in June:

• The peak of mobula ray breeding season, when the largest gathering of rays occurs.
• Birthing season for sea lions.
• A great time to see blue-footed boobies dive for baitfish as currents bring large sums of plankton and nutrients.
• Whale shark season is coming to a close.

Baja Weather in June:

• June is the sunniest month.
• Air temperatures in the high 80s getting hotter as summer starts next month.  

Baja in July

The summer heat, warm water, and clear water visibility of July make water activities like scuba diving and snorkeling a joy, but you won’t want to hike or bike during this time. Baja in July will be hot during the day, and may rain for a bit in the afternoon, but the crowds will be small, and the prices will be low. There will be few, if any, small ship cruises operating in July. To find some respite from the heat head to the coasts, especially Baja’s Pacific side, it is the coolest region during the summer.

Baja Wildlife in July:

• Can still see mobula rays en masse.
• The middle of breeding season for sea lions.
• The most common time to see sperm whales in the Sea of Cortez
• Elephant seals can be found in select regions along the Pacific coast and they come ashore to breed, give birth and molt.
• Beginning of sea turtle nesting season, the first round of females can be spotted digging nests on select beaches.

Baja Weather in July:

• A great month for diving or snorkeling due to high water visibility.
• One of Baja’s warmer months. Air temperatures in the mid 90s.
• Interior Baja in July can be unbearably hot, so if visiting it is best to head to the coast.
• Water temperatures reach into the 80s.

Baja in August

It’s low season and a quiet month in Baja. If you visit Baja in August, you’ll find the least number of travelers, and more deals on flights and hotels, but your choice of enjoyable outdoor activities will narrow. Some lodges and cruises also shut down during this time. Tropical cyclones and chubascos can occur in August. These weather patterns are Baja’s main source of rain, and the only way this desert landscape can bloom green in the fall.

Baja Wildlife in August:

• End of breeding season for sea lions.
• Sea turtles still nesting.
• A great time to play with curious juvenile sea lions.
• This is the most common time to see sperm whales in the Sea of Cortez.
• Good time to view chackwalla, iguana, lizards and sea turtles.
• Mobula ray spring season slowing down but sightings still possible.

Baja Weather in August:

• Baja’s hottest month air temperatures averaging in the upper 90s and peaking 100°F.
• Waters are the warmest (with an average maximum of 80°F) and calm.
• Visibility for diving and snorkeling is best.
• Some rain falls in August due to chubascos, short lived tropical storms.
• This rainy season month brings the peninsula its only humidity and can turn the desert landscape bright green.

Baja in September

Baja weather in September can be unpleasantly hot and humid, even more so if you are inland, away from any coastal breeze. September is also hurricane season in Baja California. The odds of a hurricane affecting the peninsula are slim, but higher during this month than any other. September brings the most rain, but generally in the form of afternoon passing showers, and not hard rainstorms. Consider purchasing trip insurance so that you are protected should your travel plans be interrupted by storms in the region.

Baja Wildlife in September: 

• Another great month to see sperm whales in the Sea of Cortez.
• Sea turtle nesting continues.
• Good time to view chackwalla, iguana, and lizards.

Baja Weather in September:

• The peak of hurricane/tropical storm watching season in Baja.
• Most of the annual rainfall is taking place.
• The most humid time in Baja.
• On average, September has the hottest water temperature in the upper 80s.
• Air temperatures staying in the 90s.

Baja in October

By mid-October the weather finally breaks from the summer’s high heat and humidity. The winds pick up again after the calm of summer offering sailors, kiteboarders and windsurfers their fun. October is still hot with very warm sea temperatures, an excellent month for water activities.

Baja Wildlife in October:

• Humpback and gray whales begin their migration journey to Baja.
• The very begging of the La Paz regulated whale shark season.
• Sea turtle eggs begin to hatch and make their way to the water.
• Find large baitballs (bait fish swimming in synchronized groups) attracting predators from both above and below the water surface.

Baja Weather in October:

• The statistical end of the Baja tropical storm season.
• Highest water visibility.
• Water temperatures reach into the 70s.
• Air temperatures in the 80s.

Baja in November

Fall in Baja means a beautiful green desert and the return to pleasant temperatures. Baja California weather in November has low to humidity and daytime temperatures in the enjoyable 80°s. The expedition cruise season hasn’t started quite yet, but there’s lots of fun land-based trips that offer activity-filled days, wildlife excursions, and beach front relaxation, whatever you choose! This is a great time to travel before high-season crowds arrive for the winter holidays.

Baja Wildlife in November:

• See elephant seals before they begin their migration north.
• Baby sea turtle releasing season.
• The start of the mobula ray’s reverse migration.
• More whale sharks begin to arrive for the main winter and spring season (Nov-Jun).

Baja Weather in November:

• Barren desert landscape transformed with flowers after the rain.
• Late fall in Baja marks the return to pleasant temperatures.

Baja in December

Baja has pleasant winter weather. Baja in December is warm and comfortable with low humidity, you’ll find plenty of opportunities for fun outdoor activities. Some early migratory whales along with the first expedition ships reach Baja in December, with more arriving by the end of the month. Expect more travelers and higher prices around Christmas and New Year.

Baja Wildlife in December:

• Humpback whales and other seasonal visitor whales like Minke start to show themselves around the Baja California peninsula as they head to the Sea of Cortez to breed and birth.
• The first gray whales to arrive to Baja’s pacific coast lagoons are the females, either very pregnant or single and fertile. 

Baja Weather in December:

• Water temperatures down into the 70s.
• Air temperatures in the 80s, lows of 60s.
• Days can be overcast.

Baja Whale Watching Season

When can you see whales in Baja? Whale watching is a year-round activity in Baja with 9 different whale species to look for. But many travelers target Baja’s main migratory whale season; when every year over 97% of the earth’s gray whales, plus thousands of humpback and blue whales, make the long migration to Baja. Migratory whales begin to arrive in December and remain through April. The winter months of January through March are the best time to see gray whales in the mating and breeding lagoons along the Pacific coast. The winter months of January through March are also the best time to see migratory humpback whales at peak numbers in the Sea of Cortez.

Whale Shark Season in Baja

The La Paz whale shark season runs from October to May. There are whale sharks in Baja California year round, but in the late fall through late spring a higher concentration of whale sharks can be found feeding in the rich waters of the Sea of Cortez, most reliably in the Bay of La Paz.

As winter progresses, the water temperature drops, bringing large amounts of plankton. This abundant food supply makes for slightly lower visibility, but it also attracts the largest numbers of whale sharks.

These gentle giants are an endangered species and luckily, protected under Mexican law. It should be noted that due to government regulations whale shark swimming tours in La Paz are subject to summer-time closures.

Sea of Cortez Mobula Ray Season

There are two Baja seasons for mobula rays. The first is during the ray’s breeding season between late April and July. Then, there’s the winter reverse migration that takes place between late November and early January, but is far less impressive.

The main event is the breeding season migration, when mobula rays are easy to spot due to their unusual acrobatic behavior—leaping from the water and back down for a loud belly flop on the sea’s surface. During this time, you can witness massive schools with thousands of mobulas swimming synchronously through the water. Snorkeling and diving are a popular activity as mobulas are harmless and not dangerous to humans.

So, When is the Best Time to Visit Baja California?

Considering the information above, we’d say you can’t go wrong visiting during the cruise season from December through May, where good weather and wildlife viewing opportunities align. Because of the comfortable weather, it’s also a great time to include a Baja California multi-day tour before or after your cruise. If gray whale watching is on your bucket list, then target the height of their calving season, mid-January through mid-March.

Is it still possible to see whale sharks in February? Or is it better to come in January?

February is a popular time to spot whale sharks in La Paz, but January is generally considered peak season for optimal viewing conditions with clearer water visibility. Both months offer great chances to encounter these majestic creatures, so plan your Baja vacation based on personal preferences and availability. This trip was one of the best vacations I have ever taken. The scenery, the accommodations, the activities, the staff on the ship all combined for a winner of a week. I have wanted to go to the Baja for years, but didn't think I could ever afford to do it in the way that Uncruise did it. Now I'm finally at a point in my life where I can afford it, but also this particular trip was a good value for all that we received. We met two couples on this trip that we plan to see again. What a great bonus!

Our cozy cabin on the ship was all that we needed. The fact that the cabins were cleaned/attended to daily made the small space do-able.

The meals blew me away. Not only were the meals healthful and thoughtfully planned, but special requests were honored with a smile. I enjoyed always having options, and everything I tried was delicious. I feel that the selection of beers and wines could stand to be looked at again. Some were good, and some just didn't add much to the dining experience.

All of the guides had a great level of enthusiasm, and were ready to help in any way that they could. Lindsey from Montana was exceptionally helpful and caring. Liz gave an excellent massage. Esa brought smoothies after our yoga class one morning. Jeremy had great knowledge to share on our desert hikes.

Itinerary Review

I was really there for the snorkeling, which was great, but I literally had tears streaming down my face when we encountered a blue whale one evening. I had not expected to be lucky enough to see one, and the sound of the whale exhaling as it surfaced in front of our boat is something I will remember for the rest of my life. I enjoyed the experience of being in the midst of an explosion of life. Combined with the remoteness, this was a good combination for me. There were no places that I did not enjoy. On the last night of the trip, we were treated to a slide show of the week's activities, put together by the staff.

Transportation Review

We made airport transfers on our own, so I cannot comment on that part, but all transport during the trip was great. The suggestion to stay at El Encanto the day before we met the group was a good one.

The intro materials about the Baja could stand to be bulked up a little.

I kayaked, snorkeled with whale sharks feeding on plankton, swam with playful sea lion pups, got close up to a baby grey whale, spotted birds plus five types of whale, hiked round cactus, ate marshmallows round a camp fire and only fell off the stand-up paddle board once. So close to nature. So far away from the rest of the world. This was a special trip with special people.

The trip of a lifetime on “Westward” ticked at least 20 first time experiences -the main one being living aboard the most beautifully restored 84 year old 87’ Historic Registered Vessel. It felt rather like being transported back to the 1930s as a guest on a friend’s yacht.

Bill, Tracie and Carlos’ love of Baja and all its wildlife is outstanding. From details of the largest creature on earth, the Blue Whale, to the life of the tiny Lion ant all imparted informally, no lectures. With such a small group and no fixed itinerary Captain Bill can allow for interests, preferences, photo opportunities and can make the best of the weather; you are at sea after all.

This trip far exceeded our expectations! We loved every excursion and our guide, Allen, was knowledgeable, fun, and most importantly for us, great with our two young kids. The food that was made for us and the restaurants we went to were exactly what we hoped for - authentic. I can’t say enough great things about this trip! We loved everything from the location of the hotel, to surfing with great surfers that helped us “get up”, meeting Donna Ramona was a once in a lifetime opportunity as well as swimming with the sea lions. I can’t say we didn’t enjoy any of it - we were getting a little traveler’s tummy by then end so galloping on a horse probably wasn’t the best thing but it was so beautiful, you couldn’t help but take it all in. We wanted to stay on Baja peninsula and the excursions were something we could do with our 6 & 7 year olds.

Bryan and Sergio were amazing hosts and Chef Iker’s food was amazing. We miss Panda❤️ Our girls would have taken her home if they could!

Loved all of it - chef iker made me my favorite chilequiles one morning and it was fantastic!

Weather in April?

I love warm weather !  Considering and would like to go on a Mexican Riviera cruise first part of April.   Been to Cabo once in late April and weather was fine with shorts day and night.  But was told it was unusual and can get quite cool at night down into the 60's sometimes and can be a bit chilly.  Not sure about weather in Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan or at sea.   So I'm wondering if this is the right time of year for me to go to Riviera or should I stick with the Caribbean.   Don't want to pack a sweater! Thoughts?

We've cruised to the Mexican Riviera several times over the years. I wouldn't hesitate in April. 

Most recently this past year in January & October and the weather was great. We'll be cruising there again January 2023.

First 2 days are hoodie sweater days during day and night... next 3 days shorts and tank top weather... Last 2 days are back to hoodie and sweater.

Basically until you get past  Baja California it is a little cooler and the ocean is a little more rough.

We live in Rosarito and northern Baja can be a crap shoot.  One day (like today) bright sunny, shorts, t-shirts and another (yesterday) foggy, dank, and cold.  Once you get close to Cabo it should be warm and sunny most of the time.  Personally, April is my time for the Caribbean  (pre-hurricane).  But price is a big factor and MX out of San Diego or LA is cost effective for us.

Playacar Beach

Paamul Beach

The ground underneath the ocean is very uneven, providing the ideal place to explore bizarre rock formations and see tropical fish, although protective footwear is necessary. If you'd rather relax on the beach and enjoy the sunshine, you can take advantage of the numerous facilities, including sun loungers, parasols, restaurants, bars, a mini-market and swimming pool.

Xulam The Mayan Fisher

If you want to get a taste of the local cuisine, spend a night at Xulam The Mayan Fisher in Playa del Carmen. Decorated in an authentic Mayan style, this restaurant serves an extensive menu which features a number of varied platters. The presentation of the food is fantastic, with several dishes served in the shape of ancient buildings, in sea shells or on bamboo skewers.

Ginger  in  Tulum  is the perfect place for seafood lovers, where you'll find a top selection of fish dishes, such as calamari, prawns, lobster and filleted fish. If you're not in the mood for seafood, this eatery also serves a number of meat-based and vegetarian choices. If you want to hit the clubs, be sure to visit the Bali Club in Playa del Carmen. The best time to get there is around 1am, when you'll have plenty of time to dance to the latest tunes and enjoy the affordable cocktails and mixed drinks. In addition to the dance floor, this nightclub also provides several VIP areas, which you can reserve in advance. 

La Casa del Habano

La Casa del Habano in Playa del Carmen is where you'll find the finest Cuban rum and cigars in the whole of Riviera Maya, Mexico. As well as the quality cigars and spirits, this bar also features a number of hookah pipes. If you don't smoke, you can enjoy the selection of cocktails, including mojitos, piña coladas and margaritas, made with fresh ingredients and quality alcohol.

Croco Cun Zoo

Croco Cun Zoo  in  Puerto Morelos  is a great place for families and couples to spend the day, whatever the weather . Visitors can interact with the wide variety of animals here and will even have the chance to hold and feed some of the zoo's residents. If you book in advance, you'll be able to join one of the popular tours which allows you to get up close and personal with crocodiles, spider monkeys, deer, snakes and parrots.

Coba Mayan Village

History buffs won't want to miss the chance to visit the Coba Mayan Village in  Playa del Carmen . Special services are held in most churches across the resort, where you'll also find small market stalls selling Easter crafts, including items woven with palm fronds.

Best Time to Visit Mexico: Month by Month Breakdown

Mexico is a vast country and there is a huge range of seasons and climates across the different regions.

The weather can be roughly split into a wet and a dry season, although this mostly counts in the tropical regions south of Mexico City.

The north has a more arid, desert-like climate, while the central regions are at high altitude and enjoy much cooler weather than the rest of Mexico. 

Mexico also has distinct low and high seasons when it comes to tourism, especially in touristy destinations like Cancun and Puerto Vallarta. These generally coincide with the wet and dry seasons too.

Mexico Dry Season 

The dry season is the best time to visit Mexico, and it falls between November and April.

This is peak season, so you can expect things to be busy, especially over Christmas, but Mexico is such a vast country that you can always find a way to escape the crowds.

Here’s our month by month breakdown for Mexico’s dry season. 

Novem b er  in Mexico

November is the start of the dry season, and for travelers, this could be the best time to visit Mexico. 

Prices are still low and tourist numbers are still small compared to what’s going to hit the top destinations in December. This is a good time to visit popular destinations like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Puerto Vallarta, as you’ll find some great deals on flights and accommodation. 

As the rainy season has only just ended, it’s not the best time for diving yet, but head to Baja California and you’ll catch the start of the Whale Shark season. 

Tropical Yucatan is getting much cooler and a lot less humid, so now is the time to explore the jungles and to visit those lost Mayan Ruins without working up too much of a sweat. 

December in Mexico

Weather-wise, December is easily the best time to visit Mexico. However, everyone else has the same idea too, and December is the worst time to visit Mexico if you’re looking for a quiet vacation away from the crowds! 

In December, especially over Christmas and New Year, the resorts of Cancun and the Maya Riviera are packed out and prices are at their peak. It’s no different in other popular tourist spots either, such as Puerto Vallarta or Baja California. 

The weather is crisp, sunny and dry though, and you’re not likely to have a single rainy day. If you’re not having a beach holiday though, then take a trip to explore the indigenous culture of Oaxaca or Chiapas where you can find beautiful weather. 

January in Mexico

January is just as busy as December, at least for the first two weeks. This is peak season across Mexico, especially in Cancun and along the Pacific Coast.

Travel to Mexico towards the end of January though and you can start to get a few good deals again, as the crowds start to thin out.

Weather-wise this is a great time to explore the south, so enjoy the dry weather along the coast, and visit Mayan archeological sites like Palenque or Chichen Itza.

Mexico City is lovely in January, as are the central highlands, although it can get chilly at night. 

February in Mexico

In February the weather starts to get hotter, especially in the tropical south. Up north and in the mountains it’s still very cool, however. 

You can expect the odd rain shower across the country but for the most part, this is still a beautiful time to travel around Mexico .

You’ll get lower prices in Cancun while the diving and snorkeling off the coast of Cozumel Island is glorious, with sparkling clear water. 

This is the perfect time to visit Baja California, on the Pacific Coast, where you’ll be right in the middle of the whale watching season, and you’ll have the chance to swim with Whale Sharks. 

March in Mexico

March brings a mixed bag when it comes to crowds and the weather. This can be the middle of Spring Break, so it’s a good idea to avoid the big tourist hotspots if this isn’t your scene. If you’re looking to party though, then head straight to Cancun or Tijuana.

Equally, if Easter falls in March then it can be busy everywhere, although this is a great time to soak up the local culture during Semana Santa, the holy week. 

Weatherwise, it can be a little more unpredictable. The south sees more rain while the north is heating up and seeing a few thunderstorms too. 

April in Mexico

Like March, it can be a little unpredictable in April too, so plan your trip in advance to avoid spring break dates or Easter holidays, which can both fall this time of the year. 

April is the last month of the dry season, although you will see the weather starting to turn. The colder winter months are over and summer is on the way, which means that along with the rain it’s getting much hotter, everywhere. 

This is your last chance to see the whales and Whale Sharks in Baja California before they move on for the summer, and it’s the last chance to get really good visibility and diving conditions around Cozumel Island and along the Maya Riviera. 

As the weather heats up, this is a great time to start exploring those high altitude destinations in Central Mexico, such as Guanajuato or San Miguel de Allende, where you can escape the heat. 

Mexico Wet Season

Mexico’s wet season runs from May through to October, however, this varies across the country. The south sees the most rain, and hurricanes can lash the coastlines.

It’s cooler and drier in the north this time of the year, where the climate isn’t tropical. The wet season is not the best time to visit the south of Mexico, but there are still plenty of great deals and places to explore outside of this traditional tourist hotspot. 

May in Mexico

May is officially the start of the wet season, and you can guarantee that it’s going to be hot and it’s probably going to be rainy.

This is a good month for shoulder season travel though because you can avoid the high season crowds in places like Cancun or the Pacific Coast.

It’s fine if you don’t mind a little humidity and have a swimming pool to cool off in because you’ll only get a few hours of rain a day at most.

It’s even better in Baja California, where you can enjoy dry weather for most of May, while temperatures soar into the 30s. Mexico City has cooler weather, and it feels like it’s summer, making the capital a great option in May. 

June in Mexico

June is not the best time to visit Mexico, although you can get some cheap deals on flights and hotels.

The reason it’s cheap though is because it’s the start of hurricane season. While hurricanes are rare, it’s definitely going to rain, although if you don’t mind risking that for a few hours a day it might be worth it 

Instead of going to the coast though, stick to the central highlands, where it’s much cooler and there’s much less rain. 

July in Mexico

July is just as hot and rainy, and while you can get cheap deals at the resorts and great value flights across the country, it’s really not the best time to visit Mexico. 

Hurricanes can hit the Caribbean and Pacific Coast, while everywhere is hot, stuffy and humid. 

You get the best weather in Baja California, but make sure you have a swimming pool where you can cool off.

The other option is to stay at altitude, as you’ll find that while Central Mexico is hot, it’s not quite as hot as the coast – especially at night time.

August in Mexico

In August, it’s still going to be uncomfortably hot across Mexico, although temperatures will start to cool off slightly, especially in the higher altitude areas of the country around Mexico City.

This is still very much hurricane season, so be prepared for this if you’re traveling to Cancun or the Pacific Coast in August.

On the plus side, there are few other vacationers around in August and the prices can be very low, on both flights and hotels! 

September in Mexico

In September, things are starting to look up again when it comes to the weather. This is still the rainy season, but the worst is behind you, and September can be a great time to escape the crowds and score some good deals. 

It’s a good time to be in Mexico City, where the rain is slack anyway and the high altitude means cooler climes.

It’s also Independence day in September, so you can expect plenty of parades and fiestas. 

October in Mexico

In October, it’s the last month of the rainy season and the hurricane season, and actually this can be the best time to visit Mexico.

Rainfall will be minimal, but prices are still low, so head to the beaches and make the most of the deals before the high season crowds arrive in November and December.

As a bonus, the end of October is also when you’ll be able to celebrate Day of the Dead across Mexico.

The coldest months of winter are without a doubt the high season in the Caribbean, as people flock to the unceasing warmth of the islands in order to escape the frigid cold blanketing most parts of the world. That also makes winter the most expensive time to visit the Caribbean, so if you can withstand a few months of winter, you can save a lot of money by waiting until April to plan your trip. As spring weather is finally starting to appear in your hometown, the Caribbean is just as warm and beautiful as it is all year long.

Not only do you miss out on the high season by visiting in April, but it's also just before hurricane season begins in the Caribbean , so you can prepare for your trip and enjoy island life without worrying about the possibility of an impending storm.

Caribbean Weather in April

Throughout this tropical region, April temperatures in the Caribbean vary from daytime highs above 80 degrees F to evening lows down to 70 degrees F. There's some variation depending on the island that you visit, with the coolest temperatures usually found in the Bahamas , but overall it's comfortably hot across the entire region.

No matter which island or country you visit, this is considered the dry season in the Caribbean and rain is at a minimum, a very promising forecast for travelers hoping for sunny skies. Puerto Rico is among the wettest Caribbean locals in April, receiving almost five inches of rain, whereas Bonaire and Aruba are two of the driest, getting just half an inch of precipitation. Ocean temperatures are quite warm during April, too, making it the perfect time for a swim.

Hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through November 30, so it's unlikely that your trip in April will be affected by inclement weather. Hurricanes are unpredictable though, and peak season can vary according to geography. The season is typically busiest between mid-August and mid-September.

What to Pack

When packing for your Caribbean trip , you will want to bring a bathing suit, of course, as well as loose-fitting cotton or linen layers to keep you cool during the day. Flip-flops are also a must and, in case you want to do adventure activities, you will need sneakers, socks, and athletic clothing. Above all, do not forget to bring plenty of sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses, as these items are marked up significantly in hotels and local shops.

For more casual evenings, pack a light sweater and long pants or a comfortable maxi dress. You will also want dressier clothes if you plan on visiting a nice restaurant or exploring the nightlife, as many have dress codes. For nights you plan on going out, you will need more formal footwear such as nice, heeled sandals or pumps for ladies, and closed-toe dress shoes for men.

April Events in the Caribbean

Though any month you choose will feel like a celebration in the Caribbean, in April you will typically find Easter celebrations in the Dominican Republic and Jamaica, boat races (regattas) in St. Barth and the British Virgin Islands,   gastronomical events, and much more.

• A Taste of St. Croix : The U.S. Virgin Islands celebrates its unique and diverse cuisine at this one-day fundraiser event that draws some of the island's best chefs.
• The Tobago Jazz Experience : This music festival attracts some top international acts to the typically sleepy island of Tobago (next to the much more lively island of Trinidad). Past headliners include Diana Ross, Rod Stewart, and others.
• Oistins Festival : Barbados holds this annual celebration during Easter Weekend. The street fair includes cuisine such as fish cakes, fried fish, and head cheese.
• Saborea : This long-running food festival is held in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Diners can try local specialties such as mofongo along with all kinds of international dishes at this event which is meant to show off Puerto Rico's place as a gastronomical destination. (Saborea in 2021 has been postponed to a later date.)
• Regattas : Boat racers and yacht lovers can find regattas happening around the Caribbean throughout the entire year, but two of the most exciting sailing events happen in April. Les Voiles de Saint Barth is the first one which is followed by Antigua Sailing Week . (Both the St. Barth and the Antigua regattas are canceled in 2021.)
• St. Barth Film Festival : Celebrities flock to St. Barth at the end of April for the five-day celebration of Caribbean cinema. Imagine the glamour of festivals in Venice or Cannes but with the tropical backdrop of St. Barth and it's easy to see the appeal of this annual film festival. (The Film Festival in 2021 has been postponed to a later date.)

April Travel Tips

• If you can wait until the end of April, known as the "shoulder season," you should. You’ll not only save money this time of year, but you will avoid the loud and sometimes raucous  Spring Break crowds, especially in popular destinations like the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and the Bahamas.
• If you are visiting early in the month, you can expect islands to be a little crowded at popular destinations, but there will be far fewer crowds than in the busiest months of December, January, February, and March.
• If you want to see several Caribbean destinations at once, consider a cruise . The weather is best through April and the late peak season means that prices will be lower than your typical winter cruise.

A Panama Canal transit is a rite of passage for many cruise lovers. Experiencing this marvel of early 20th-century engineering appeals to those with a wide array of interests, from history and politics to colonial architecture and wildlife. Built by the U.S. government between 1903 and 1914, this 50-mile waterway linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans revolutionized shipping by creating an expedited route for the transit of cargo and, ultimately, cruise ship passengers.

Panama Canal itineraries are offered by almost every cruise line. Thanks to a 2016 canal expansion project, a third set of locks can now accommodate larger vessels. It's possible to cruise the Panama Canal on ships of all sizes (from 148 guests to more than 3,000) on itineraries that range from a week in the sun to a six-month world cruise.

Some ships sail a full transit of the canal, from the Atlantic to the Pacific or vice versa. These one-way journeys between Miami or Fort Lauderdale and Los Angeles or San Diego visit ports in Central America, South America, Mexico and California.

Others sail only a partial transit, entering the locks from the Atlantic and cruising into Lake Gatun before turning around and exiting again. These itineraries, sailing round-trip from Florida ports, combine the canal experience with island hopping in the Caribbean.

The array of options means that a Panama Canal cruise experience is possible even if you're short on time or have a limited budget — and chances are high that your favorite cruise line offers one or more itineraries. Most sailings attract couples, typically retirees, but if the timing is right, a Panama Canal cruise can also be a great multigenerational experience.

Here are a dozen of the best Panama Canal cruises to consider.

Holland America's 14- to 17-night Panama Canal cruises

Holland America offers a variety of Panama Canal cruises , but the most popular itineraries span 14 to 17 nights. They offer a full transit between Fort Lauderdale or Miami and San Diego, Seattle or Vancouver, British Columbia, or vice versa and are offered on multiple ships, including Koningsdam, Zuiderdam, Zaandam, Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam. These sailings call on Cartagena, Colombia; Puntarenas, Costa Rica; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; and Huatulco and Puerto Vallarta or Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Longer sailings also call on several Caribbean islands.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' newest ship, Seven Seas Grandeur, debuted in November 2023 and will transit the Panama Canal on several occasions in the next few years. The 16-night Miami-to-Los Angeles (Dec. 13-29, 2024) and 16-night Los Angeles-to-Miami (Jan. 8-23, 2025) transits offer luxurious all-inclusive pampering, plus port calls in Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas and Acapulco, Mexico; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; Corinto, Nicaragua; Panama City; Cartagena, Colombia; and George Town, Grand Cayman.

Bookable on more than a dozen dates from November 2024 through March 2026, the itinerary is offered aboard 148-passenger Wind Star or Wind Spirit (in 2024 and 2025) and 312-passenger Star Pride (in 2026). The ship will travel from Colon, Panama, to Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica (or vice versa), transiting the canal. Who should go : Oceania's newest ship offers a great compromise between a small and medium-size vessel and is ideal for those seeking a premium cruise experience with casual sophistication. Older couples especially will appreciate the ship's elegant cabin decor in soft hues of wheat and seagrass, mix of grand and intimate spaces and wide array of dining options. (Two new and noteworthy venues on Vista include Ember for inventive American cuisine and Aquamar Kitchen for wellness-focused breakfast, lunch and dinner.) Cunard's 26-night Southampton-to-San Francisco cruise

Cunard's brand-new 2,996-passenger ship Queen Anne, which debuts in May 2023, will make both its first transatlantic crossing and its first Panama Canal transit on this historic 26-night Southampton-to-San Francisco sailing (Jan. 9-Feb. 4, 2025). Mexico’s auto production, exports jump in April

(Reuters) – Mexico’s automotive industry saw a jump in production in April while exports also increased from a year earlier, data from national statistics agency INEGI showed on Tuesday.

Production increased by 21.74% to 358,575 vehicles and auto exports surged 14.38% to 289,756 vehicles, according to the agency.
