GEORGE THOROGOOD Cancels Tour Dates After Being Diagnosed With 'Very Serious Medical Condition'

George Thorogood has canceled the next leg of his 50th-anniversary tour dates with his band, THE DESTROYERS , so that he can undergo an undisclosed operation.

" George has been diagnosed with a very serious medical condition that will require immediate surgery and quite a few weeks of recuperation and healing," the band said in a statement earlier today (Tuesday, April 11). "You, our fans, mean the world to us, and we know this news is not want you wanted to hear, but rest assured GEORGE THOROGOOD & THE DESTROYERS will be back. We'll keep you updated as we know more."

The next leg of GEORGE THOROGOOD & THE DESTROYERS ' North American tour was scheduled to kick off April 27 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and wrap May 21 in Big Flats, New York.

Tickets will be refunded at the point of purchase.

The guitarist, songwriter and singer, who turned 73 in February, launched his 50th-anniversary tour on March 17.

Another leg of the "Bad All Over The World - 50 Years Of Rock" tour is slated to begin in July.

"Bad All Over The World - 50 Years Of Rock" features Thorogood and Jeff Simon (drums, percussion) with longtime DESTROYERS Bill Blough (bass guitar), Jim Suhler (rhythm guitar) and Buddy Leach (saxophone).

Since 1976, GEORGE THOROGOOD & THE DESTROYERS have sold over 15 million albums, built a catalog of classic hits, and played more than 8,000 ferocious live shows. They broke records with their "50 Dates/50 States Tour" , delivered landmark performances at Live Aid and on "SNL" , and became mainstays of radio, MTV , and stages worldwide for more than two generations. Through it all, they've remained one of the most consistent — and consistently passionate — progenitors of blues-based rock in pop culture history.

With more than 20 studio and live albums to their credit, GEORGE THOROGOOD & THE DESTROYERS have achieved platinum and gold success with eight. In the past few years alone, the band released a top-selling limited edition seven-inch single for Record Store Day and saw the reissues of their legendary "Bad To The Bone" , "Born To Be Bad" and "Greatest Hits: 30 Years Of Rock" albums on 180-gram colored vinyl. Thorogood himself received the 2018 B.B. King Award from the Montreal International Jazz Festival , and his solo debut "Party Of One" — which critics called "brilliant" ( Spin ),"electrifying" ( Guitar Player ),and "chock full of classics" ( Music Connection ) — became George 's fastest-selling disc in over 20 years. In 2020, Epiphone created the George Thorogood White Fang' ES-125TDC premier signature model guitar, and GEORGE THOROGOOD & THE DESTROYERS "Live In Boston 1982: The Complete Concert" was also released — an album that Classic Rock said "may well be one of the great live albums, entirely superb and a master class in live performance."

"It's easy to write a song, difficult to write a good song, and even harder to write a great song," Thorogood previously said. "It strikes home that I have the ability to write some pretty great songs, and there's a real sense of achievement to that."

With great sadness, we must announce the cancellation of our Canadian & U.S. tour dates from April 27, 2023 through May... Posted by George Thorogood & The Destroyers on  Tuesday, April 11, 2023

George Thorogood Cancels Shows Due to ‘Serious Medical Condition’

George Thorogood and the Destroyers have canceled a run of performances as Thorogood deals with an undisclosed “very serious medical condition.” “With great sadness, we must announce the cancellation of our Canadian and U.S. tour dates from April 27, 2023, through May 21, 2023,” the band announced on  social media . “George has been diagnosed with a very serious medical condition that will require immediate surgery and quite a few weeks of recuperation and healing.”

In total, 18 concerts have been canceled in the wake of the announcement, spanning the remaining dates of Thorogood’s spring trek celebrating his 50th anniversary with the Destroyers. The band has a scheduled break from May through July. If Thorogood's recovery timeline remains on track, he will return to the stage on July 14 in Jefferson, Wis.

“You, our fans, mean the world to us, and we know this news is not what you wanted to hear, but rest assured George Thorogood and the Destroyers will be back,” the group’s announcement said in closing. “We’ll keep you updated as we know more.” Fans who already bought tickets to one of the canceled dates will be able to get a refund at their point of purchase.

Thorogood played his first gig with the Destroyers on Dec. 1, 1973. According to drummer Jeff Simon, the only other remaining founding member of the group, the band quickly won the crowd over with such classic tunes as "Madison Blues" and "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer."

"It was like someone flipped a switch,” Simon recalled , noting that the club's dance floor was packed by the second set. "After the gig,” Thorogood added, “Jeff and I thought, ‘Maybe we’re onto something.’”

George Thorogood ‘Recovering Nicely’ From ‘Serious Medical Condition’

george thorogood tour 2023 cancelled

2022’s The Original George Thorogood album release

George Thorogood is said to be “recovering nicely” from his surgery that forced the rocker to cancel his 50th anniversary tour dates with his band, the Destroyers, through May. A post on May 18, 2023, on all of his social media platforms notes, “George & The Destroyers would like to thank you all for your lovely comments, well wishes, and prayers for George. His surgery went really well and he is home recovering nicely. We’re looking forward to getting back out on the road and rocking with you this coming July!”

On April 11, a dire post on the musician’s Facebook page noted “George has been diagnosed with a very serious medical condition that will require immediate surgery.” The guitarist, songwriter and singer turned 73 on Feb. 24. The celebratory tour began on March 17 and at the time of the announcement was on a planned break. The next leg, now canceled, was scheduled to resume on April 27 and continue through May 21. The tour is scheduled to resume on July 14.

From the original announcement of what was planned as a celebratory tour: On December 1, 1973, a guitarist, a drummer, and their rhythm guitarist loaded their gear into the drummer’s Volkswagen bus and drove to Lane Hall at the University of Delaware. In a week that saw new albums by Wings, Black Sabbath, and Bachman-Turner Overdrive, the three-piece band proceeded to play covers that included “No Particular Place To Go,” “Madison Blues” and “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer.” The drummer, Jeff Simon, recalls the crowd was wary at first, “then it was like someone flipped a switch.” By the second set, the dance floor was packed.

“After the gig,” George the guitarist says, “Jeff and I thought, ‘maybe we’re onto something.’” It was the first-ever performance by George Thorogood & The Destroyers .

Five decades, more than 8,000 live shows, and 15 million albums later, George Thorogood and Jeff Simon (drums, percussion) – with long-time Destroyers Bill Blough (bass guitar), Jim Suhler (rhythm guitar), and Buddy Leach (saxophone) – have announced their Bad All Over the World – 50 Years of Rock Tour in 2023. “From that very first show, we’ve stayed true to ourselves and the music we love,” says Thorogood. “We’ve decided to celebrate our first half-century by throwing the biggest and baddest rock party ever.” (Yes, the band played what they called a 45 Years of Rock tour in 2021.)

More from the tour announcement: Since 1976, the hard-working band has built a catalog of classic hits, and played more than 8,000 live shows. They did a 50 Dates/50 States Tour, performed at Live Aid and on SNL , and became mainstays of radio, MTV, and stages worldwide for more than two generations. Through it all, they’ve remained one of the most consistent – and consistently passionate – progenitors of blues-based rock. With more than 20 studio and live albums to their credit, the band has achieved Platinum and Gold success with eight. In the past few years, the band re-issued their legendary Bad To the Bone , Born To Be Bad , and Greatest Hits: 30 Years of Rock albums. Thorogood’s 2017 solo debut Party of One became his fastest-selling disc in over 20 years.

“It wasn’t about the amount of people we drew, but rather the impression we made,” Thorogood explains. “I asked myself, ‘Are we reaching them? Do they want more?’ And we knew from the very first set that we had something special.”

A new collection, The Original George Thorogood , was released in 2022 to celebrate Thorogood as a tunesmith. The album features radio favorites like “I Drink Alone” and “Rock and Roll Christmas,” as well as his mega-hit, “Bad to the Bone.”

Saw George Thorogood and the destroyers last night at the amphitheater in Costa Mesa, California. I don’t know what happened to him regarding his surgery or whatever but I can tell you the guy came back and performs like nothing I’ve ever seen. The last time I saw him was at the house of blues in Anaheim and this time all I can tell you is there was 100% difference. we were three women, two of which myself and another girl who are singers and absolutely think the world of George Thorogood and his music. The third girl was an airline stewardess and knew of him, but had never heard his music and she was on her feet thriving. It goes without saying he had reeled all of us and captivated us and we, of course, like everyone else did not want that concert to end . Hopefully his health is better, and he will be all right and in good health to continue the rest of his tour.

George Thorogood Forced to Cancel Shows Due to Undisclosed “Serious Medical Condition”

by Tina Benitez-Eves April 12, 2023, 7:36 am

George Thorogood and The Destroyers have canceled a run of shows on their Bad All Over the World – 50 Years of Rock Tour due to the singer’s undisclosed “very serious medical condition.”

Videos by American Songwriter

“With great sadness, we must announce the cancellation of our Canadian and U.S. tour dates from April 27, 2023, through May 21, 2023,” read a statement on his social media pages. “George has been diagnosed with a very serious medical condition that will require immediate surgery and quite a few weeks of recuperation and healing.”

The statement continued, “You, our fans, mean the world to us, and we know this news is not want you wanted to hear, but rest assured George Thorogood and The Destroyers will be back. We’ll keep you updated as we know more.”

Following the announcement, the 73-year-old rocker had to cancel 18 shows on the North American tour. Already scheduled for a tour break from May through July, if Thorogood’s recovery is on track, he may be well enough to pick up where he left off and perform at their upcoming show in Jefferson, Wisconsin on July 14.

Thorogood played his first show with Destroyers on Dec. 1, 1973, performing some of their classics like “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer” and “Madison Blues.” At first, the band left the audience unimpressed, according to drummer Jeff Simon, the only remaining founding member of the band.

“It was like someone flipped a switch,”  said Simon . By the second set, the dance floor was packed. “After the gig,” Thorogood added, “Jeff and I thought, ‘Maybe we’re onto something.’”

Kicking off in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on Feb. 13, the tour was scheduled to hit 15 cities before initially concluding in mid-May, marking Thorogood’s first dates in Canada in three years. Backed by long-time Destroyers Bill Blough, Jim Suhler, and Buddy Leach, the Bad All Over The World Tour is a celebration of 8,000 live shows, and 15 million records sold.

“From that very first show, we’ve stayed true to ourselves and the music we love,” said Thorogood , who released his most recent album with The Destroyers,  2120 South Michigan Ave  in 2011 and his debut solo album,  Party of One , in 2017. “We’ve decided to celebrate our first half-century by throwing the biggest and baddest rock party ever.”

With great sadness, we must announce the cancellation of our Canadian & U.S. tour dates from April 27, 2023 through May... Posted by George Thorogood & The Destroyers on  Tuesday, April 11, 2023

The Destroyers are currently in the midst of their The Bad All Over the World – 50 Years of Rock tour, which was first announced in December and kicked off on Feb. 13 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In total, 18 18 concerts have been canceled amid Thorogood's health crisis, including the band's previously scheduled April 27 show at The Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, British Columbia. Shows in the Canadian provinces of Albuquerque, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec, as well as stateside shows in Michigan, Connecticut, and New York, have also been canceled. The band has a scheduled break from May through July. Currently, dates after that break remain uneffaced, and if Thorogood's recovery timeline remains on track, he will return to the stage on July 14 in Jefferson, Wisconsin.

Thorogood formed The Destroyers, also known as the Delaware Destroyers, in 1973 with his high school friend drummer Jeff Simon, who remains the only other remaining founding member of the group. The band is known for hits including "Madison Blues" and "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer."

Amid news of Thorogood's health scare, many fans sent the musician well-wishes. Commenting on the Facebook announcement, one person wrote, "Good thought, wishes and positive vibrations for George," with somebody else commenting, "Wish you the best of luck and a speedy recovery George." A third person encouraged Thorogood to "take all the time you need to fully recover," adding, "You are the greatest entertainer."

George Thorogood & The Destroyers Cancel Tour Dates Due To 'Serious Medical Condition'

Delaware's George Thorogood cancels 50th anniversary tour dates for 'very serious medical condition'

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Two weeks before he was to start the next leg of his 50th anniversary tour, Delaware native and "Bad to the Bone" rocker George Thorogood recently announced he was pulling the plug after being "diagnosed with a very serious medical condition."

A statement posted to his website went on to say the diagnosis forced the 73-year-old Brandywine Hundred native to have "immediate surgery," which will be followed by "quite a few weeks of recuperation and healing."

The specific medical issue causing the surgery and concert cancellations was not revealed by his management when contacted by Delaware Online/The News Journal.

“He and the Destroyers will hit the road in July leading into the 50th anniversary of their very first tour,” they wrote.

The 50th anniversary tour

Eighteen Canadian and U.S. dates of the tour with his band the Destroyers ― from April 27 in Vancouver, British Columbia, to May 21 in Big Flats, New York ― were scrapped with ticketholders receiving refunds.

The rest of the 28 scheduled dates of the tour kick off July 14 in Wisconsin and wrap up Oct. 20 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

There are no concerts announced for Delaware, but there are two dates in Ocean City, New Jersey, on Aug. 28 and 29.

FIRST STATE TAKES OVER THE WORLD These Delawareans are on TIME magazine's list of 100 most influential people of 2023

The tour marks 50 years since the blues-based rocker and his band made their debut in 1973, playing on Main Street in Newark at spots such as the old First Presbyterian Church (known as the Rathskeller student bar at the time) and the Deer Park Tavern, less than a block away.

Born Feb. 24, 1950, Thorogood began as a solo acoustic act before forming the then-Delaware Destroyers with childhood friend, Brandywine High School classmate and drummer Jeff Simon, the only remaining founding member of the band.

In the years since, they have sold 15 million records worldwide and released nearly 25 studio and live albums over the past five decades.

His most recent release came six years ago, his solo debut "Party of One," featuring songs by everyone from the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan to Hank Williams and Robert Johnson.

Early Delaware shows before breaking big

Coming up in the state's then-vibrant music scene, Thorogood and the Destroyers honed their chops playing across northern Delaware, including gigs at the Deer Park and the former Buggy Tavern in Brandywine Hundred, not far from the home where he grew up.

After Thorogood and the Destroyers released their self-titled debut in October 1977, which contained his trademark cover of John Lee Hooker's "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer," he played a small number of hometown shows in Delaware.

WHAT'S NEW THIS SPRING Wilmington's Constitution Yards Beer Garden to debut Dogfish Head VIP lounge, new drinks

A show at the University of Delaware's Clayton Hall happened in 1978 and as his popularity grew, so did the venue sizes, taking the stage at Carpenter Sports Building on campus in 1981.

But once his 1982 album "Bad to the Bone" was released, featuring his most famous song of the same name, he had officially outgrown the First State and fans would travel to his Philadelphia concerts to see "Lonesome George" in person.

His early adoption of MTV and song placement in pop culture, like the iconic moment "Bad to the Bone" plays in "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" in 1991, kept him an in-demand act.

THE HISTORY SULLY'S IRISH PUB The 'Rodney Dangerfield of bars' – the state's oldest – is (finally) getting some respect

In a 2015 interview with Delaware Online/The News Journal, he pointed to one other reason for his longevity: His fans like to drink as he sings his songs, many of which are about, well, drinking.

"Our sax player said it perfectly a couple of years ago: 'We're successful because we sell a lot of beer.' Clubs, casinos and theaters make their profit off alcohol and beer, especially. And nobody moves beer like we do. That's why we're still here," he said at the time.

And even though "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" may help sell the most beer, it's the Thorogood-penned "Bad to the Bone" that changed his life. The ubiquitous bar song has been licensed for too many movies, television shows and commercials to count. If you've been at a live sporting event, you've probably heard it played there as well.

"That's what it's all about. Everybody wants to have that one song to hang their hat on. If you have one, you can work. If you have three, you have a career," he said. "If I didn't come up with 'Bad to the Bone,' I would have been in those bars forever."

Familiar First State face in recent years

After nearly 20 years of touring the country and the world after breaking out, the now California-based guitarist/singer/songwriter began playing Delaware again in 2000 when he accepted a show at the former Kahunaville on Wilmington's Riverfront.

The much-anticipated homecoming, followed by a 2003 show at the same venue, wasn't the glorious return he envisioned as he suffered from a migraine one night and fought rain another.

In 2009, he got it right when he performed at The Grand for the first time, delivering his high-energy show to a crowd of 1,200 filled with familiar faces in a room he first visited as a long-haired teenager.

When a fan began shouting song requests during a lull early in the show, Thorogood made it clear he wasn't quite done soaking in the moment, saying, "Listen friend, it took us 35 years to get up here. I'm going to enjoy every sweet second of it!"

A LEGENDARY TASTE After 66 years, Fusco's Italian Water Ice expands statewide, including at Blue Rocks games

He loved the Market Street theater so much, he has returned four times (2011, 2015, 2019 and 2021) since.

"I'm not saying this because Wilmington, Delaware, is where I was born. I've been all over the world and played everywhere, but that is one of the top three best-sounding rooms. The sound is unreal," he said in the 2015 hometown interview. "I mean, I've played the Royal Albert Hall in London and the sound wasn't anywhere near as close as the sound at The Grand."

In fact, the only other Delaware venue he's played in recent years was a tour stop in Harrington for the Delaware State Fair in 2016.

When Thorogood turned 65, he told Delaware Online/The News Journal he was not one to wistfully look back or think about his legacy:

"I don't have time to do that. I'm too busy doing what it is I do. I think when he was being inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Carl Yastrzemski was the one who said, 'Gee, if I knew I was all this, I would have enjoyed it more.’ Even you saying I have a legacy – I don't want to think about that because then I'll get lazy."

George Thorogood Has Been Promoting a Healthy Lifestyle

Before his recent health issue, Thorogood notably established Marla Thorogood Memorial Fund for Ovarian Cancer Research to honor his wife, Marla, who died of ovarian cancer in 2019.

Talking to Dr. Nancy Berk  in 2020, the "Bad to the Bone" hitmaker shared why it is important to take charge of one's health and why reminding loved ones to do it, as well, is important.

"I am dedicated to supporting ovarian cancer awareness, education and research that will lead to providing screenings and educating more women about this disease," he said . "It is important for women to get annual exams and take charge of their health. My daughter and I want to do what we can to save lives."

The starting point for the powerhouse rock band came on December 1 1973, when Thorogood, drummer Jeff Simon and their rhythm guitarist loaded their equipment into Simon’s Volkswagen bus and drove to Lane Hall at the University of Delaware. As a three-piece, they played such covers as “No Particular Place To Go,” “Madison Blues,” and “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer.”

Blues-rock personified: the fiery musicianship of gary moore, an indelible byline: in fond memory of richard havers.

Simon recalls that the audience was wary of them at first, “then it was like someone flipped a switch.” By their second set, the dance floor was packed. Adds Thorogood: “After the gig, Jeff and I thought ‘Maybe we’re onto something.’” It was the first ever performance by George Thorogood & the Destroyers.

Nearly 50 years later , after more than 8,000 live shows and album sales of 15 million, Thorogood and Simon will hit the road again with longtime Destroyers Bill Blough, Jim Suhler, and Buddy Leach. “From that very first show, we’ve stayed true to ourselves and the music we love,” says Thorogood. “We’ve decided to celebrate our first half-century by throwing the biggest and baddest rock party ever.”

John Fogerty and George Thorogood Announce 2024 Tour Dates

John Fogerty and George Thorogood Announce 2024 Tour Dates | Society Of Rock Videos

via Milwaukee Live / YouTube

John Fogerty has announced new tour dates for his Celebration Tour, which marks the first time the former Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman has performed the songs since acquiring the rights to them early last year. The tour will feature opening support from George Thorogood & the Destroyers.

Fogerty and Thorogood Set to Kick Off Tour

The tour is set to begin on June 2 in Simpsonville, South Carolina and will span nearly 20 shows. While Fogerty and Thorogood have appeared on concert bills in the past, this summer’s run marks the first time they’ve gone on tour together. According to Fogerty, “George and I have done shows together before, but for years we’ve talked about doing a full tour together. This summer we decided time is short, we better do this now.”

The announcement comes on the heels of a serious medical condition that George Thorogood battled last year causing him to cancel some tour dates. Thankfully, he has since made a recovery and is preparing to launch a tour on April 5 before joining Fogerty on the road two months later.

Fogerty’s Celebration Tour

After the Fogerty and Thorogood tour kicks off in June, the shows will work their way through Pennsylvania, New York, and Connecticut. Fogerty will also play a few dates with his band without Thorogood as a support act. The Celebration Tour is the first time Fogerty has performed his classic Creedence Clearwater Revival songs as the owner of them. He had signed away the publishing rights to his work in 1967, the year the band signed to Fantasy Records.

Over the years, Fogerty has fought with Fantasy Records owner Saul Zaentz, who sued him in 1985, claiming that his solo hit “The Old Man Down the Road” sounded too similar to CCR’s “Run Through the Jungle.” Fogerty bought back the publishing rights to his songs in early 2023, although Fantasy Records still owns the master recordings of Creedence’s records.

Tickets for Fogerty and Thorogood’s tour will go on sale March 15 at 10 a.m. local time, with presale tickets available on Tuesday starting at 10 a.m. local time. To get more information or tickets, visit Fogerty’s website.

George Thorogood and Delaware Destroyers touring this summer with John Fogerty

george thorogood tour 2023 cancelled

George Thorogood & the Delaware Destroyers will treat hometown fans to a sold-out summer show Saturday, June 22, at Freeman Arts Pavilion in Selbyville.

But you can see this classic rocker sooner, too.

Before he plays Freeman Arts, the lead Delaware Destroyer will join John Fogerty for a U.S. tour that kicks off Sunday, June 2, in Simpsonville, South Carolina.

That tour, in which Fogerty will perform Creedence Clearwater Revival songs for the first time in years, will not come to the First State, but First State fans can catch the tour, with the Delaware Destroyers as the opening act, in either Camden or Holmdel, New Jersey. The Freedom Mortgage Pavilion show in Camden is Friday, June 7, while the PNC Bank Arts Center show in Holmdel is Saturday, June 15.

George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers were very popular in the 1980s, with hits including "I Drink Alone'' and "Bad to the Bone,'' as well as now-classic cover versions of songs like "Move It on Over,'' and "Who Do You Love?"

Last April, Delaware native Thorogood, 74, halted his 50th anniversary tour,  announcing on his website  that he was "diagnosed with a very serious medical condition, that will require immediate surgery and quite a few weeks'' of recuperation.

But Thorogood, who over half a century has sold more than 15 million records and performed more than 8,000 live shows, is still bad to the bone and plans to stay busy, with an active schedule throughout the spring and summer.

Look for more about the Delaware rocker, the tour and future plans from us soon.

Meanwhile, here's ticket info:

George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers open for John Fogerty on Friday, June 7, at Freedom Mortgage Pavilion, Camden, New Jersey. Tickets are $32.80 to $277.20. The tour comes Saturday, June 15, to PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel, New Jersey. Tickets are $67.20 to $212.70. Visit georgethorogood.com/tour.html.

George Thorogood & The Destroyers — Bad All Over The World Tour: 50 Years Of Rock, with support from Joe Waters, comes to Freeman Arts Pavilion on Saturday, June 22. This Selbyville show is sold out.
