Celebrity Cruises is well known as an industry leader, praised for providing modern cruise interiors and elevated dining experiences.

I cannot say enough about the friendliness of all of the staff- from the servers to housekeeping to the cruise director staff- (loved El and Kirsten on game days)- they always had a smile and couldn’t do enough to make your time on board carefree. Best Cruise for the Money - Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines

Royal Caribbean International is known for driving innovation at sea and they continuously redefine cruise vacationing year-over-year. Each successive class of ships is an architectural marvel and they’re always pushing the envelope on what is possible!

Royal Caribbean operates one of cruising’s most intriguing fleets. Ships range from mid-sized and middle-aged to state-of-the-art and on-the-cusp mega-ships. The line continuously updates even its oldest ships, bringing onboard the most popular features from its newest vessels. The line boasts the three biggest ships in the world — Oasis of the Seas, Allure of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas. – CruiseCritic.com

3. Norwegian Cruise Line - Best Travel Destinations

Best Cruise for the Money

Norwegian Cruise Line recently revealed The Norwegian Edge Program – An innovative program that promises to introduce a new standard of excellence that encompasses the entire guest experience, (from ship hardware to culinary enhancements and exclusive private destination developments).

Norwegian Cruise Line is the proverbial underdog of the cruise world: not quite up among the Carnival/Royal Caribbean power elite, but scrappy and determined and lots of fun. You just can’t help but root for them. – AvidCruiser.com

Finding The Best Cruise Deals

best cruise deals

Ever wonder how to find the best cruise deals?  There are a lot of great resources out there, and we picked from some of our favorites to bring you a list of tips. According to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) between 2003 and 2013, demand for cruising worldwide increased 77 percent , from 12 million to 21.3 million passengers. The CLIA says that “Florida remains the center of cruising in the United States, with its five cruise ports accounting for nearly 62 percent of all U.S. embarkations.”  Following Florida, are California, Texas, and New York (each had more than 600,000 embarkations).

How to Find the Best Cruise Deals

NBC News.com says:

  • Book during the January-through-March “wave period”.  This is “traditionally the cruise industry’s busiest booking period. During this time, cruise lines make about 35 percent of their annual sales”.
  • Call the cruise line directly as a first step (get a quote and ask if there are any special deals out there)
  • Check the cruise booking websites.
  • Call a travel agent.
  • Negotiate, Negotiate, Negotiate.
One thing to know before you meet with a local travel agent is that many charge consulting fees for their time with you. Like many independent travel agents, luxury cruise specialist Lucy Hirleman, president of Berkshire Travel in Newfoundland, N.J., charges new clients a $50 nonrefundable trip deposit fee. –NBC News.com

CruiseCritic.com says:

  • Look for last-minute cruising deals.  60-90 days to departure can be a treasure trove of last-minute travel deals
  • Be on the lookout for off-peak travel times (holidays are likely to have premium prices attached to them)
  • Be flexible
  • Take the car.  Taking the car means you won't be paying for last-minute airfares, and that can save you money too!
  • Access Military, Senior or Residency Rates. A number of cruise lines have special deals for seniors, military personnel and teachers.
Access Military, Senior or Residency Rates. A number of lines have special programs for seniors, military personnel and even teachers. Norwegian Cruise Line provides discounts to U.S. and Canadian military vets on select sailings. And for AARP members, it offers a 5 percent discount on any cruise booked at least nine months in advance. Holland America even goes so far as to offer discounts on select sailings to teachers, EMTs, firefighters, police officers and active military. Erik Elvejord, Holland America's director of public relations, told us that, while fares vary, they've typically been $50 to $100 below going rates. — Cruise Critic.com

Clark.com says:

  • Be flexible with your schedule.  When you're looking for cruise deals, make sure you look at the cost-by-week to take advantage of the best deals.
  • If you're buying your first cruise, don't buy online.  You should have someone helping you like a travel agent or a live cruise specialist. They'll ask you about your interests and recommend cruises that will fit your lifestyle.
  • Clark likes the cruise website VacationsToGo.com.  They offer a number of cruise deals to be had, and highlight deals on their site.  They also acknowledge discounts for seniors and others!
The number one rule right now about cruising is be flexible with your schedule. The week you go will control how much of your wallet you leave behind on the ship. The same exact cabin could cost you as little as a third one week what it might cost you the very next week. — Clark Howard.com

A Must-Have Packing List For Your Next Cruise

Norwegian Cruise Lines posted a great question on their Facebook Page today. They asked; “What's on your must-have cruise packing list?” Some of the answers are very funny, and some are very practical! Since many of you may be planning cruises this year or looking for other travel deals , we thought we'd post our favorites from that Norwegian Cruise Lines  must-have list for a cruise . These items (not necessarily in this order) are important to remember when you take to the high seas! Are you planning a cruise this year?

  • Reading Glasses
  • Flip Flops (sandals)
  • Extension Cord/Power Strip (adapter and/or 3 plug outlet)
  • A “Cover-Up”
  • Baseball Hat (sun hat)
  • iPad or Kindle Charger
  • Cross Body Purse (or backpack)
  • Dressy Shoes
  • Running or Athletic Shoes
  • Work Out Gear
  • Hair Clip (for the curtains if you want to take a nap during the day)
  • Anti-Nausea Meds (Dramamine?)
  • A Good Book (books)
  • A Camera (could be your phone)
  • Your Prescription Medicine (s)
  • Coffee Creamer (a lot of folks mentioned this – there's no creamer aboard?)

Safety Tips For Your Cruise

Beau Prichard from USA Today published a list of safety tips for beginners that are preparing for an upcoming cruise.  In the wake of the overturned Costa Concordia, and the crap-covered Carnival Triumph it's important to pay closer attention to emergency measures AND general safety precautions when getting ready for your “vacation aboard”.  Remember these safety tips for your cruise and have smoother sailing on your next vacation!

Best Safety Steps for Cruising

  • “ Pay close attention to your safety briefing ” – We've reached a point when you can't take anything for granted anymore.  You are responsible for you (and your family)… Pay close attention!
  • “ Take care of your health ” – Beau warns against using public restrooms, but if you wash your hands and practice good hygiene protocols this shouldn't be a problem.  We recommend that you try to get some exercise in during your cruise.  At least an hour per day should keep you feeling more alert, help with your sleep, and allow you guilt-free indulging.
  • “ Wear appropriate shoes ” – This one is obvious, but worth noting.  Ladies don't need to haul around 4 pairs of high-heels.  Get comfortable, and find yourself a quality pair of sandals, and be sure to bring some tennis shoes (or some quality walking/running shoes).
  • “ Leave valuables at home ” – Love this one… and frankly, it's a good rule-of-thumb for any travel (abroad or otherwise).  Unless you feel the need to show off (and it's OK if you do) leave the jewels at home in the safe.  Thieves and schemers love to prey on the naive and on the wealthy.  When they spot both (in one person) they know they've hit the mother-load!  IF you can afford to lose it, no big deal… but if you can't, better safe than sorry.  Just leave it at home.
  • “ Keep your money out of sight ” – See above (same applies).
  • “ Do not travel alone ” – There is safety in numbers.  Enough said.
  • “ Drink in moderation ” – This is a tough one because some folks want to cut loose when on a cruise.  Once you've reached the point where you can't drink responsibly you're at your limit, and it's best to back off.

There are so many more to mention that we'll be doing more of these lists in the future.  (Here's a preview… “Make sure you use that sunscreen!”)  If you have tips you'd like to share, please do so in the comments below.

7 best cruises for seniors who love to travel by sea

Fran Golden

The best senior cruises mix adult-focused onboard activities with fascinating destinations ashore. No two retirees want the same thing from their travels. However, generally, most seniors have time to dedicate to longer itineraries.

Some have saved their money to enjoy a more premium cruise ship experience, but all are happy to snap up a cruise deal or find a promotion offering increased value from their cruise booking.

How did we choose the top cruises for seniors? We prioritized cruise lines that target couples and adults, rather than families, as well as cruise ships with fine dining, grownup entertainment and plenty of opportunities to socialize. We looked for destination-intensive cruises offering immersive cultural opportunities, bucket-list itineraries and a range of sailing lengths.

We dismissed the huge ships with their whiz-bang top-deck attractions, although these are ideal for grandparents on a multigenerational holiday with family. We also skipped the small expedition ships that require a level of physical fitness not all seniors possess.

Based on those criteria, here are the seven best cruise lines for seniors who love to travel and are looking to spend more time at sea.

celebrity cruises for seniors

Viking 's 930-passenger ocean ships top our list of the best cruises for seniors because they are designed specifically for an adult crowd. No one younger than 18 is allowed on board, and all the programming is created with passengers aged 50-plus in mind.

These cruises are ideal for academic-minded seniors. Viking chairman Torstein Hagen says that he set out to create "the thinking person's cruise," and lectures and other destination-specific programming are the main form of entertainment on board. That doesn't mean Viking cruises are boring, though. In fact, the crowd-pleasing ABBA tribute show in the theater is not to be missed.

Viking ships are comfortable, homey oases done up in sophisticated Scandinavian decor.

Itineraries are focused on getting senior cruisers to key attractions around the world, including UNESCO World Heritage Sites, with a shore excursion each day included in the cruise fare. Thrifty retirees will appreciate the "no nickel and diming" philosophy and cruise fares that cover everything except cocktails and spa treatments.

Complimentary dining includes a specialty Italian restaurant and the Chef's Table, with its rotating tasting menus themed around international cuisines.

Also recommended for the senior and baby boomer crowd are Viking's river ships in Europe , Vietnam and Egypt (among other destinations) and the line's expedition products in Antarctica and on the Great Lakes , which have similarities to the ocean ships, including the all-inclusive pricing.

Windstar Cruises

celebrity cruises for seniors

Windstar 's small sailing ships and motorized yachts range from 148 to 342 passengers. Although kids 8 and older are allowed on board, you are unlikely to see many on these upscale vessels. Most Windstar cruisers are active seniors who come as couples, pairs of friends or solo travelers, looking for a destination-rich experience on ships where they won't feel lost in a crowd.

Windstar has two classes of ships. Older couples celebrating a milestone anniversary should choose a sailing ship, with its vast open deck space and picturesque sails that set the mood for romance. Seniors who prefer more personal space should seek out the 312-passenger motorized yachts with their all-suite accommodations.

Cruise highlights on all ships include an outdoor deck party with a lavish buffet and late-night conga line, as well as meals created by James Beard Foundation-affiliated chefs. (Windstar partners with the prestigious culinary organization.)

Because of their small size, all Windstar ships can visit quiet harbors and out-of-the-way places that big ships can't in destinations like Tahiti, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean .

Azamara Cruises

celebrity cruises for seniors

With four nearly identical ships holding fewer than 700 passengers each, Azamara has carved out a niche catering to well-traveled seniors looking to cruise in clubby surroundings.

The line's cruises are best for seniors who don't want to splurge on a fancier luxury product but still want an upscale level of ambiance, service and amenities. While kids aren't banned, the line makes clear on its website that it "discourages" passengers younger than 18.

Azamara passengers appreciate the boutique hotel-like decor, which includes faux fireplaces in the impressive libraries, called The Drawing Room on each vessel.

The line's destination-focused itineraries in Europe and elsewhere spend more time in ports than average ships, staying overnight in key destinations. This is ideal for passengers who want to explore on their own. The line also offers a complimentary "AzAmazing Evenings" program on every cruise. They feature cultural performances ashore in amazing destinations, such as Turkey's ancient city of Ephesus.

Holland America

celebrity cruises for seniors

Holland America is one of the best cruise lines for seniors because it hits the sweet spot with its midsize ships. Carrying 2,668 passengers or fewer, these vessels offer big-ship amenities but lack the more over-the-top waterslides and thrill attractions found on megaships. The line is a great choice for baby boomers and older seniors who wish to enjoy the line's alternative dining options, casinos and choice of entertainment.

An older crowd does not mean a sedate group. Holland America hosts live music in a big way. Passengers dance the night away at venues that include B.B. King's Blues Club, featuring some of the best live bands at sea. Explorations Central (EXC) programming is designed to educate passengers about the destinations they visit, and a fun roster of other onboard pursuits includes a winemaking experience with Chateau Ste. Michelle.

The ships are also particularly accessible. Many staterooms offer roll-in showers and other assistive features. Vessels also are equipped with a lift system for pools and tenders.

In addition to one-week cruises in the Caribbean and Alaska (the line's specialty), Holland America explores South America, the South Pacific and other destinations around the globe. The line also offers months-long world cruises.

celebrity cruises for seniors

Senior travelers with a penchant for traditional cruising will find Cunard 's ocean liners to be a top cruise option. Founded in 1840, the cruise line has a long legacy and is proud of its less casual vibe, which includes nightly dress codes. Go old-school with dress-up galas held in real ballrooms with high ceilings and twinkling chandeliers. Gentlemen hosts are on hand if ladies need a dance partner.

Those same ballrooms host daily afternoon tea, complete with finger sandwiches and scones with cream, served on fine china by white-gloved waiters. Other refined onboard activities include watching shows in Queen Mary 2's onboard planetarium, attending lectures by guest speakers, fencing, taking art classes and enjoying classical concerts.

Not everyone stays in a fancy suite, but seniors ready to splurge should book either Queens Grill or Princess Grill rooms for upscale accommodations and meals served in exclusive, intimate restaurants.

QM2 is the only ship that offers regular transatlantic service between Southampton, England, and New York. The 2,081-passenger Queen Elizabeth and 2,061-passenger Queen Victoria spend time in Europe and other destinations, and all three ships offer world cruises around the globe. When it debuts in 2024, the line's 3,000-passenger Queen Anne will also sail in the Mediterranean.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

celebrity cruises for seniors

Retirees who have worked hard and are ready to treat themselves right will find that Regent Seven Seas Cruises is one of the best cruises for seniors looking for luxury.

The cruise line brags of operating the most luxurious ships afloat. It's hard to argue that point, especially on the line's latest ship, $545 million, 746-passenger, all-suite Seven Seas Grandeur. The ship boasts a football field's worth of marble, an impressive art collection and one of the most expensive suites at sea — a Regent Suite, which is priced at $11,000 per day, per couple.

Other high-end lines, such as Seabourn and Silversea , operate intimate ships with extraordinary service, accommodations and cuisine. However, Regent differs with its shore excursion-inclusive, one-stop-shopping fares and grand European hotel ambience — especially on the sister ships Seven Seas Splendor and Seven Seas Explorer.

Related: 12 best all-inclusive cruise lines

The other Regent ships are well-maintained 480- to 684-passenger older vessels. On all, if you don't feel like going to one of the restaurants, you can stay in your bathrobe and order a meal served course by course in your suite.

Also, except for summer and holiday periods, you are unlikely to find kids on board.

Regent sails to some 450 ports of call around the world, including world cruise itineraries, so senior travelers can find sailings to all the destinations they've been waiting to explore.

Oceania Cruises

celebrity cruises for seniors

Wellness-focused seniors love Oceania Cruises ' 648- to 1,210-passenger ships for their spa and fitness center and healthy food options. Foodies are drawn by the inspired dining. PBS host and cookbook author Jacques Pepin has a French bistro on the line's two largest ships, Marina and Riviera, and he's one of the line's culinary advisors. All the line's ships include impressive steakhouses , and some feature Red Ginger, an extraordinary modern take on Asian cuisine, as well as other eateries.

The ships provide an appealing country club-like ambiance, which is upscale without being fancy. Older passengers tend to be the sort who like to entertain themselves, though they might be distracted by the standout attraction of a real cooking school where expert chefs give classes on Marina and Riviera.

As a nod to solo travelers, the line is in the process of adding solo cabins designed and priced for one.

Oceania is known for destination-focused itineraries in the Caribbean, Alaska and Europe, among other places. Most are 10 nights or longer; world cruises are up to 180 days.

Bottom line

You'll find seniors on nearly every cruise line out there. Some older travelers are looking to explore the world, while others prefer cheap trips to beachy destinations.

Everyone's top choice will be different, but we think these seven lines represent the best senior cruises. They prioritize an adult-focused onboard experience and destination-intensive itineraries more readily accessible to retirees.

9 Best Cruises for Seniors to Take As Soon As You Retire

From relaxing in the Caribbean to exploring the rivers of Europe, these are the best cruises for travelers over 60.

celebrity cruises for seniors

Cruises offer advantages for travelers of all ages, but for seniors , conveniences like being able to visit many destinations without packing and unpacking, arranging flights, transfers, checking in and out of hotels, finding restaurants, and booking excursions are especially important. And, for seniors with limited mobility, those cruise features just might mean the difference between taking a wonderful trip or staying home.

Generalizing about individuals of any age, especially seniors, just doesn't work. Physically, many are as active and capable as 25 year-olds, while others may have limitations that prevent long walks or managing heavy luggage. Some are curious and want to see every detail on an itinerary; others are content to relax and watch the scenery go by. Many are entertained by learning new things or hearing from expert lecturers, while others enjoy nightlife and live shows. Limited budgets are not unusual among seniors with fixed incomes, while others can afford to choose more luxurious options .

There are cruises that meet every need. In fact, most large ships have so much to offer that couples or groups of friends cruising together can choose the activities they enjoy most and then join for dinner or cocktails at the end of the day. Solo travelers have opportunities to meet others during meals, excursions, or onboard activities. Many cruise companies and ships pay particular attention to amenities that make travel easier and more appealing for seniors , especially those with special needs. Travelers as young as 50 may be eligible for special discounts on cruises, so it's never too early to start planning a cruise for the next phase of your life.

That said, here are the 9 best cruises for seniors, from the rivers to the seas.

River Cruises for Seniors

Increasing in popularity with new ships added each year, river cruising is ideal for seniors.

Ports are usually close to cities, sailing is smooth, ships are small (with usually no more than 200 passengers), and most shore excursions offer several levels of walking intensity. For those who prefer to stay onboard, comfortable lounges, outdoor seating, and stateroom balconies provide the perfect views.

European rivers are among the most traveled, especially the Rhine and Danube, with lovely towns to see and visit. Others are the Douro, Seine, and Rhone as well as the Mekong in Vietnam, the Nile in Egypt, and the Volga in Russia. Cruises range from a week to as long as three weeks when several rivers are combined. Specialty river cruises might focus on food, wine, or Christmas markets. These are the top river cruise lines for seniors.

River Cruise Lines

Viking River Cruises are adults-only and on several rivers. Hit the Danube to get from Vienna to Bucharest, sail the Nile with Egyptologists, or pass through Holland during tulip season. Catering to retirees, with most passengers over the age of 60, Viking is for the well-traveled cruiser looking for their next adventure. It considers itself “the thinking person’s cruise,” with excursions and onboard programming designed with educational and cultural impact in mind. Their "Longships" offer larger suites and outdoor dining. Musical performances, lectures, cooking demonstrations, and destination insights provide plenty to do onboard.

AmaWaterways focuses on European cruises, but offers a few sailings through Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, as well. Their ship, AmaMagna, sails the Danube and offers twice the width of traditional river cruise ships, allowing for more lounge space on the Sun Deck as you glide to gorgeous locales, more intimate activities and excursions, and additional dining options. A range of shore excursions ensures there's something for everyone's interests and abilities at each port, from guided hikes and bike rides to cooking demonstrations. Everything is as convenient as possible with ports steps from points of interest, and concierge services that help travelers reserve their flights, airport transfers, and hotel reservations for before or after the cruise.

Avalon Waterways offers river cruises as short as four or five days for those who want to "test the waters" before a longer commitment. They sail across Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America, with special interest journeys like the Storyteller Series, which hosts authors like Candace Bushnell and Gillian Flynn onboard. With larger suites and fewer passengers, these cruises are perfect for passengers who want to stretch out and enjoy a quiet respite. Travelers can choose which off-boat activities they want to participate in (like picnics, kayaking, or painting) based on their abilities and what kind of trip they want. The plushly-appointed Panorama Suites with floor to ceiling windows and open-air balconies make your cabin one of the most comfortable places to watch the world pass by.

American Cruise Lines sails the rivers of the United States — including the Mississippi, the Ohio, the Hudson, and the Columbia and Snake Rivers — so you can go on an adventure without having to board a flight. Accommodations like large staterooms with interior entrances, elevators to all decks, and spacious public spaces will be appreciated by older passengers. Dine whenever you like on local fare (like gumbo on the Mississippi or a boiled seafood dinner in the Northeast) and enjoy the daily cocktail hour. Local experts join your trip and share knowledge and history about the area you're traveling through making your trip as educational as it is relaxing.

Ocean Cruises for Seniors

For ocean cruises, ships are usually larger and trips are longer, although it depends on the destination. Megaships have capacities of around 2,000 to 6,000 passengers; mid-size ships carry about 1,000-2,500; small ships can hold around 1,200 or less. Naturally, more dining options, entertainment, pools, and public areas are available on larger vessels. For seniors who are more comfortable remaining on the ship, there are many opportunities to keep busy, and the ship is a destination in itself. Travelers with limited mobility may choose shore visits carefully or decide to enjoy the view from afar as they take advantage of the ship's amenities and social scene.

Many oceangoing ships have accessible cabins and elevators, wheelchair-width doorways, and even special equipment to aid in boarding a smaller boat for shore excursions. Several have medical care and physicians aboard — a benefit for all passengers, not just seniors — for emergencies or illness. Most cruise companies request that they be advised of their passengers' special needs at least 45 days before departure to ensure that proper accommodations are arranged.

Oceangoing Cruise Lines

Holland America Line travels to South America, Antarctica, Alaska, Canada, New England, the Caribbean, Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. A line preferred by many seniors, it offers staterooms with mobility assistive features such as space for wheelchairs and scooters, roll-in showers, grab bars, and lift systems to make tenders (smaller ships that go ashore in some ports) wheelchair accessible. Provisions are made on most ships for deaf or hearing-impaired passengers, as well.

Seabourn Cruise Line cruises the world from Australia and New Zealand, Asia, India, Africa, Antarctica, Alaska, and the Caribbean, to the Arctic, Northern Europe, and more. Staterooms specially designed for guests who require mobility assistance are available. Service animals are permitted (but not pets or therapy companions) as long as proper paperwork and vaccinations are current. Provisions are available for passengers who have limited eyesight or hearing, including large print or Braille menus and visual emergency alarms.

Azamara 's mid-sized ships sail to the Americas, the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific. Their “Destination Immersion” experiences mean longer trips with more time in port and overnights onshore, as well as onboard programming designed around your specific destination. Azamara takes an extra step even before the cruise begins by offering assistance getting on and off the ship for boarding and shore excursions. With advance notice, Azamara will even make arrangements for transportation from the airport to the pier.

Silversea 's small luxury ships range in size from 50 to 304 suites for travelers who prefer more intimate surroundings and atmosphere. Also, smaller ships can generally anchor closer to port cities, so disembarking is more convenient, and views are more interesting for those who stay on the ship. Your dedicated butler will help you with minutiae like unpacking and reservations, so you can just focus on relaxing. There's a low single supplement and "gentleman hosts" so you're never without a dance partner even if you're traveling solo. With gourmet meals, beverages (including premium spirits), gratuities, and activities all covered in the price, Silversea's cruises are not likely to attract children, which may be a plus for some seniors (as much as they might love their grandkids!).

Princess Cruises , considered by many to be one of the best cruise lines for seniors, offers many options: Various departure cities (including Florida for any local retirees), one-way or round-trip cruises, and Cruisetours that include extended land excursions. Rest assured that ships, destinations, and excursions are designed with accessibility in mind. Princess' crown jewel is their Alaskan cruises , during which passengers can meet sled dog puppies and handlers, hear from mountain climbers, fishermen, and loggers, and learn from experts about Alaskan wildlife without even leaving the ship. Most importantly, passengers can enjoy spectacular views from the comfort of the ship and marvel at sights unique to the 49th State.

Whether you pick an ocean sojourn or a river ride, cruises are some of the best ways to see the world. From the rivers of Europe to the blue-green waters of the Caribbean to U.S. trips you can board without ever getting on a plane, cruises take the convenience of a resort on the road. And as many cruise lines pay special mind to accessibility and inclusivity, they make traveling at any age (or solo) all the easier.

Cruises come in so many types — different destinations, durations, and activities aboard the ship as well as on land.  You want to pick a cruise that best fits you, especially if you’re opposed to cruises geared towards a younger generation or if you have medical or physical limitations.

You should understand cruise secrets that relate to every cruise before your choice. They are good to know but will not affect your desire to cruise. They will enhance your trip.

Things you need to consider:

Before you even start scouting for the best cruises for seniors , here are a few questions you need to ask yourself first to help you narrow down your choices:

5-best-cruises-answers

  • – How many days do you intend to travel?
  • – Are you traveling solo, with a partner, with family, or with a group?
  • – What are you looking to gain from this trip?
  • – Do you have any mobility issues? Any health conditions that need special assistance?

Different ships offer different amenities, different services, and different facilities. Some cruise lines don’t offer the utmost convenience to passengers with disabilities, even though they have complied with the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act).

Yet, some cruise lines go as far as featuring hydraulic pool chairs in their pools as well as providing wheelchair accessibility. Some ships cater to multi-generation families while others are designed to exclusively accommodate adults.

And of course, there is always the problem of what to wear on a cruise.

However, with the wide selection of cruises available, picking the right one can seem overwhelming and a bit taxing. You don’t want to book a trip that falls below your expectations.

Information from other travelers on cruise message boards can give you the “inside information” before booking.

1. viking cruises.

Viking Cruise Lines  is a privately held company. What’s interesting is that although this cruise line offers luxury service, they are listed in the class of small ships. As such, they can travel to the same locales as larger ships but can also go places where larger ocean lines cannot go.

Nevertheless, many of their guests commend the cruise line for its upscale service and amenities they provide. These services are included in the fare.

Among its many accolades, Viking Cruise ship Venus has been ranked #4 by  Condé Nast Traveller  in “The Best New Cruises in the World: 2022 Hot List”. It was also nominated #1 for  “The Top 10 Large-ship Ocean Cruise Lines in 2020”  by  Travel + Leisure .

Their cruises are also limited to passengers who are aged 18 and older.

Best Cruises for Single Seniors Over 60 (2024)

Older solo travelers over 60 are typically looking for their own specific factors when booking a cruise.

Over 60’s typically have more spare time to go for longer cruises, possibly even a world cruise.  Therefore your surroundings for the next couple of weeks or longer are extremely important.

We have tried to highlight these and other key points for each of our chosen best cruises for singles over 60.

Such factors might  include

  • Safety and security
  • Ease of access and navigation
  • Comfortable accommodations
  • Quality dining experiences
  • Oportunities for socializing and meeting new people.
  • Itineraries that include interesting ports of call and shore excursions that cater to their interests and physical abilities.
  • Being onboard with a similar age group

Older single woman snorkling on cruise excursion

Additionally, many older solo travelers seek out cruises that offer enrichment activities such as educational lectures, cultural programs, and onboard entertainment.

Personalized service and attention to detail are also important to this demographic, as they want to feel well taken care of during their vacation.

Whatever your particular requirements you should find one of the below more than suitable.

Holland America Line

Holland America Line is generally a popular choice in general for those over 60s, with the average passenger age being in the mid-60s.

HAL a traditional cruise line with a 140-year-old history and a large fleet of 14 ships covering a wide range of itineraries.

The cruise line is particularly good for solo travelers due to its Single Partners Program which actively encourages solo travelers by providing over 40 activities dedicated to solo guests.

There’s also the option to opt into the Share a Room, whereby yo are partnered up with a guest of the same sex.

In addition to this, they have an excellent range of enrichment programs, with more than 50 to choose from cooking to dance lessons.

Holland American Line ships are known for their Music Walks which offer a range of live music options from classical to rock, jazz and blues.

There also have a focus on an itinerary center, the Explorations Central (EXC) which allows guests to fully immersive in destinations they will be visiting via interactive desks, wall screens and a library of related books.

Most Holland America Line cruise ships are double occupancy only, but there are 3 ships in the fleet with a limited number of solo cabins .   These go quickly so if you want one you’d have to try and book well in advance.    Although there’s no single supplement on these, they are still not the cheapest and you may find better deals on other double rooms.

Key Points:

  • Traditional cruise line
  • Not too formal
  • Single Partner Program
  • Explorations Central (EXC)
  • Enrichment programs
  • Social hosts on 30+ day cruises
  • Solo Cabins (in very limited no’s)

We have covered in more depth Holland America cruises for singles and solo travelers of various age ranges including seniors.

Cunard is a British cruise line with over 180-year history.    To this day they are known for their traditional elegance on the seas.

Their flagship Queen Mary is the worlds last ocean liner.   Even if you are an avid cruiser, you may want to experience a transatlantic crossing in the last ship built and designed for the purpose.

There are regular 7-night itineraries from Southampton to New York or 14-night round trips.

Solo Cabins

Each of the ships in the fleet has a small number of single rooms available:

  • Queen Elizabeth – 15 single rooms
  • Queen Mary 2 – 15 single rooms
  • Queen Victoria – 9 single rooms
  • Social Hosts

For all kinds of reasons, female guests find themselves single in later life, but still like the opportunity to part-take in dancing with a partner.  However, often, female single travelers outnumber their male counterparts.

This is where Cunard social hosts come in.  These are older gentlemen who are fully trained in ballroom dances, ideal for a waltz or whatever your particular favorite dance is.

  • Strict dress code
  • Multiple Formal Nights
  • Afternoon Tea
  • Ballroom dancing
  • String quartets
  • Queen Mary 2 – Atlantic Crossing Ocean Liner experience
  • Solo Cabins (small number available)

Queen Mary 2 - Ocean Liner

Riviera Travel

As the name would imply, Riviera Travel specializes in river cruises.  These can be popular with solo travel because on smaller ships its easier to get to know the other passengers onboard.

They offer cruises on some of the most well-known rivers in Europe as well as ports of call in some of the famous European cities.

We like Riveria Travel because they offer “ a collection of solo tours ” where you travel with other like-minded solo travelers.

If you book a solo tour, you won’t have to pay any single supplement no matter what cabin type you book.

  • River cruises
  • Dedicated solo traveler tours (with no single supplement)

Regent Seven Seas

If you are looking to cruise in ultra-luxury style and comfort with service to match, then Regent Seven Seas is well worth consideration.

As a cruise line that targets an older demographic, the average age of fellow passengers will be in their early 60s.

Regent Seven Seas offer an all-inclusive cruise experience, and everything is included:

  • Complimentary transfers from airport to ship
  • In-suite mini bars – replenished daily
  • Selection of fine dining restaurants
  • Unlimited Wifi
  • Valet Laundry Service

As regards solo travelers. Regent Seven Seas offer single-supplement discounts and, in some cases a 0% single-supplement deal, some of which you can view here.   For other others, you’ll often be able to get 25% to 75% off the full single supplement price.   This saving can amount to a few thousand dollars depending on the cruise you are booking.

Regent Seven Seas also have a solo travelers program and encourage solo traveler events onboard the ships to help make it easier for singles to mix and socialize with other solo travelers.

  • Ultra Luxury
  • As all-inclusive as you can get

Fred. Olsen Cruise Line

Fred. Olsen is a Norwegian family-owned cruise line based in Britain that specifically caters to seniors over 60 to 65, offering a British cruise experience.

They have a fleet of 4 mid-size cruise ships,2 of which are old but really well looked after.

Fred. Olsen are very solo-friendly, and 3 of the ships in the fleet offer a relatively large number of solo cabins:

  • Balmoral – 65 solo cabins
  • Bolette – 43 solo cabins
  • Borealis – 49 solo cabins

With a solo cabin there is no single supplement to pay

Enrichment Programmes

Fred. Olsen cruises offer many opportunities to learn or practice something new and ideal opportunities to socialize with guests of the same interests.

These range from arts and crafts to gardening, learning to play an instrument, and singing in a choir.

You can get an overview of past-times here .

Fred. Olsen’s crew are known for being extremely friendly and helpful.  You may even get greeted by the cruise ship captain as you board.  You will quickly get the reassuring feeling that you will be a well-looked-after guest should you need anything.

Being a smaller ship than some of the others helps to get to know the crew and other guests more easily.

Gentlemen Hosts

Gentlemen hosts are aboard some voyages and act as dance partners and other social activities for single ladies traveling without a partner but who would still like to take to the dancefloor.

Key Points :

  • British tastes
  • Older demographic
  • Extremely friendly
  • Solo cabins
  • Gentleman hosts for dance partners
  • Wide range of enrichment programs

Viking Ocean Cruises

Viking or Viking Cruises as they were formerly known, offer both ocean and river cruises.  In this instance for choosing the best cruises for single seniors, I’m referring to the Viking Ocean Cruises.

Viking is a Swiss company that offers no-frills luxurious cruises without much too much glamour or flashiness.

Sailing mid-sized cruise ships with a capacity of 930 passengers, they offer the chance for longer stays in ports of call than some other lines and even overnight stays.  This allows passengers to enjoy any late evening or nighttime attractions in the cities they visit.

Viking cruises are adults only, most passengers will be over 50, and no kids are allowed onboard.

For the size of the ship, there is a wide range of fine dining options.

  • Adults only
  • No frills luxury
  • Wifi included
  • Longer stays in select ports of call

Saga Cruises

Spirit of Discovery - Saga Cruise Ship

Saga Cruises is an adults-only cruise line with a minimum age of 50.

They offer a traditional elegant cruise experience with fine dining and aim to take great care of their guests.

Spirit of Adventure and Spirit of Discovery both offer a good number of solo cabins.

At the start of your, cruise Saga arrange a “ Singles Mingle ” drinks party to get solo travelers together and socialize early on in the voyage.

They also set up Singles Lunches specifically for solo travelers.

On port days, Saga arranges for singles meetups, and if you’ve made a friend already but aren’t on the same bus, you only have to ask, and they will put you together.

You can find out more from Saga for solo travel here .

In addition to all their catering towards solo traveler, Saga offers a wide range of

  • Dance classes
  • Educational lectures
  • Fun activities
  • Minimum age 50
  • Very Friendly

Princess Cruises

Royal Princess Cruise Ship 2018

Princess Cruises is one of the most well-known premium cruise lines with a fleet of large cruise ships.

Although you can expect a fair number of couples and families onboard, Princess Cruises is still popular with more mature solo travelers.

Owned by Carnival Corporation, the ships are very different from Carnival Cruise lines.  The decor is a lot less in your face and much more neutral.

We have covered a  Carnival vs Princess cruise line comparisons which highlights the differences between the two.

The decor is modern but plain, with neutral colors and tones.

Princess Cruises is known to be good for senior travelers with disabilities.   They have plenty of wheelchair-accessible lifts and wheelchair-accessible cabins.   Staff are there to assist you if you need any support.

Singles Only Nights

Princess Cruises arranges singles-only evenings to socialize with single guests who want to mix with other singles.

These include cocktail parties or music and dancing.

They also arrange yoga classes and tennis sessions catered towards solo travelers.

There are also ample other opportunities to attend activities onboard the ship and socialize with people who have the same interests.

No Single Staterooms

Unfortunately, Princess Cruises do not have any single cabins on any ships in the Princess fleet.  However, they do have deals where you pay between 10% to 50% single supplement on select cruises.

Princess Cruises are highly rated as one of the best cruise lines for an Alaskan cruise, so if this is an area you would like to visit, they could be one of the best choices.

Not everything is included, so expect to some extras, for example for:

  • Alcoholic drinks
  • Good for Alaskan Cruises
  • Lots of wheelchair cabins and access lifts

Senior Man By the Sea

What Age is Considered Senior for Cruises?

Many of the main cruise lines class over 55 years of age as senior guests. We know this because some of the main cruise lines offer discounts to “Seniors over 55”.

However, these senior deals are more likely to be found on cruise lines which generally appeal to a younger demographic, but they still offer up opportunities for a good price.

Carnival Cruise Deals For Seniors

Carnival Cruise line has a Cruise Deals For Seniors calendar page where they offer sales to those over 55’s which makes it easy to find the best discounts available for seniors.

Looking at the calendar, you’ll see various prices and duration times which you can look through for more information.

Alternatively, you can use the search functions to find deals via dates, destinations, port of departure, and stateroom type.

As part of the booking process, you’ll be given the option to select the 55+ years old to claim your reduced fare price.

Although not one of our top choices for senior cruises, if you can find a suitable itinerary at a great price, they could well be worth considering.

Celebrity Cruises Discount for Seniors

Celebrity Cruises offers discounts on some itineraries  to those over 55s.

Although they don’t highlight which cruise itineries offer the deal online, you can find out by going through the booking process for selecting rooms and the number of guests where if any offer is available.

If an offer is available, you’ll be able to select the Senior (Age 55+) option.

Norwegian Cruise Line Senior Discounts

Norwegian Cruise Lines offers discounts to over 55s on select cruises.

As you work through the stateroom booking process, if a discount is available, you’ll be given the option to select Age 55+ discounts.

Here we have covered the Norwegian singles cruises , which are ideal for solo travellers who prefer the option of a single cabin without the supplement.

Norwegian offer the one highest number of solo cabins of all cruise lines with solo cabins .

Royal Caribbean Senior Discounts

Royal Caribbean considers seniors as those over 55 years of age and on select cruises offers the option to claim a discount by selecting a Seniors (Age 55+) option.

Finding Discounts for Senior Cruises

If you want to look for cruises with senior discounts, contact the cruise lines directly or a dedicated cruise travel agent.  They will be able to pull out all the deals available for seniors and may even find other discounts on other smaller cruise lines.

Does Celebrity actually give discounts for seniors?

Cool Cruiser

When booking my cruise there was a box to check if you were over 55 as well as other boxes for active or retired military or police/fire. When checking these boxes there was no difference in price listed. Does Celebrity actual discount their prices based on these checked boxes or is it only for certain cruises?

Only for certain cruises.

Only for certain cruises and usually for limited times. So keep checking to see if you can lower your cabin cost.

Thanks, I'll keep looking.

Yes they do give discounts for senior citizens. Our cruise last November I was checking one day and found a $400 discount per person for seniors.

I called them and they gave us a slightly different cabin which I thought was better and we save $800 with one phone call. Sometimes they also give you discounts for the different states you live in but I do not know how that works exactly.

I check everyday if I can because it was just by luck that I found the discount that day.

Kevnzworld

Sometimes they will give a 55+ discount, if you are paying full fare. They also offer discounts to residents of various states. They don't offer discounts on fares that they've already reduced. Confusing? Just call the customer service reps, they'll confuse you more, because they are confused.

At least if you don't like the answer, you can hang up and call back. You are guaranteed to get a different answer.

We always book while on a December cruise for the same time the next year. We get the Celebrity OBC and the 2 catagory upgrade. Then we transfer to a TA and get their OBC. I always keep watch on the pricing and several months ago saw the senior discount. We got that discount and it has been shown every since then. I do have to say that a police discount was also shown at that time but from the time my DH called until he got a agent, it was gone. They sometimes do come and go that fast. We keep watch until final payment is due and then I've learned to let it go. I just don't want to see any lower price after we paid in full.

I don't think they offer Senior Citizen discounts as far out as your cruise. Seems to be more around a month or so before final payment date as far as the ones I've been able to take advantage of.

patty1955

On our last cruise, they offered a senior discount after the final payment due date. We called and they upgraded us to Concierge class, no charge.

I think I've gotten a senior discount on all my cruises. Trick is to check daily, go thru the on line booking and check the senior and state block as if it was anew booking. I've gotten both on some cruises. They come at different times, my current Panama cruise in December started the senior discount a couple of months ago and it is still on. They do not do it for all cabins so some may have the discount and others not. I got 2 senior discounts on a Barcelona cruise as well as a state and the current Panama is $400 for 2. It takes less than a minute to check daily, I bookmark Celebrities starting page and go from there. If it shows up call Celebrity or your travel agent. Agents sometimes want to upgrade so their commission doesn't change and thats ok too. I don't understand why more people don't do this but most don't know about Cruise Critic I suppose. Happy Cruising

Checked on our 2013 cruise and the Military Discount price was much higher for the same Cat than the price we presently have with our TA. So you must be very careful. All specials/discounts are not always specials/discounts.

Can someone please explain how you book through Celebrity and get the obc they offer, and then swich to a Travel Agent and get additional credit? Does the TA cancel the first reservation?

Sarajevosue

It's easy. If you book on board and get the OBC, just tell the agent you want to transfer the booking to your TA and its done. Otherwise, your TA can fill out a transfer form and request it for you.

Thanks for all the replies, I'll keep looking in the hopes I can save some money on the cruise so I have more money to have fun with.

phoenix_dream

Another thing to keep in mind when you use a TA - depending on the TA's offer, you may or may not be able to keep any OBC or other perks if you switch cabins. Usually you can keep them for price drops in the same cabin, but may or may not be able to if you are upgrading cabins due to that price drop. It may be worth changing anyway, but be sure to ask.

20,000+ Club

Celebrity just came out with a senior discount for the 26 Nov 2012 Equinox Transatlantic. Not all categories discounted, but more than not.

I tried to plug in just the military box, but none offered. Maybe some selected states (residents), but not for NJ.

Last Friday we got our 55+ discount for Thanksgiving cruise on Eclipse.

It was almost thru every category. Now I am watching for AQ to come down, so maybe to get an upgrade for little more $$.

cruising to paradise

Just got a senior discount for our Nov. TA. 130.00 PP. I'm pretty happy with that. Just keep checking.

Pricing on the Equinox T/A sailing on 11/26/12 was just reduced with a senior discount. Thanks to our CC cruise board many of us were able to pick up a nice reduction.

Does the discount option show up under specials? Or where specifically can you find this. I haven't noticed any pricing difference when selecting the senior offers on the booking page. I've been looking for a senior offer for my parents to Bermuda next year.

Happy2cruise

We are new to Celebrity and have a cruise booked for March. We are over 55, hubby is retired military so when checking prices both are checked plus our state. If rate changes, how can you tell which discount (senior, military and/or state) it is?

If there's a special rate it will be show under the price, Best Rate Applied and when you move your cursor over the price it will show what special rate was applied.

You have to go in and do a new booking and select all the options, 55+, Military, Resident, and see what pops up. It will display the best rate.

KruseWay

Yes they do. I saw one for one of the Veranda categories about 4-6 weeks ago for our upcoming Med cruise. If I recall, it was a very good discount but was only there for a couple of days. Check often as there are deals out there.

Case in point, we got our CC stateroom for 47% of the current price but the deal only ran for a day or two. What a steal!

Thank you so much for your help.....greatly appreciate it!!

15 top adults-only cruises for 2025 & 2026.

Pack your bags and leave the kids behind for your next cruise adventure.

Top Adults-Only Cruises

If your idea of getting away from it all includes a vacation without the kids, consider booking an adults-only or adults-oriented cruise . While some lines provide a fully adults-only experience (i.e., children are not allowed on board), others offer adult-focused venues and activities on the ship to keep you separate from younger patrons.

The following cruise lines provide upscale amenities, immersive excursions, sophisticated dining options, lively nighttime entertainment and time for relaxation among like-minded – and similarly aged – travelers.

Find your perfect cruise

Viking Ocean Cruises

Travelers ages 18 and older are welcome aboard Viking 's adults-only ships, which feature destination-focused itineraries around the world. The line's 11 oceangoing ships carry between 930 and 998 guests (at double occupancy) and offer luxurious, comfortable Scandinavian-style spaces. The line will add Viking Vesta to its ocean fleet in 2025.

Viking's exploration program boasts special access to behind-the-scenes experiences curated for travelers who are interested in history, food, the arts or science. Immerse yourself in local culture with a visit to a traditional family farm near Bergen, Norway, or spend an evening dining on Chinese specialties at a home-hosted dinner in Shanghai .

In addition to these off-the-beaten-path excursions, guests can visit iconic sites like the ancient city of Ephesus (Kuşadasi) in Turkey and the Acropolis in Athens, Greece . Viking also hosts onboard enrichment programs like cooking classes and lectures by historians. Cruise fares include stateroom accommodations with a private veranda, all meals (including specialty dining venues), wine and beer at onboard lunch and dinner, 24-hour room service, one free excursion per port, complimentary Wi-Fi access, and access to onboard amenities such as the Nordic Spa and fitness center.

In addition to its ocean vessels, Viking offers river cruises in destinations around the world – including Mississippi River cruises aboard Viking Mississippi. The line also has two Polar Class 6 expedition ships, Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, which traverse waterways from Canada, the U.S. and South America to remote destinations in Antarctica and the Arctic.

Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages offers an adults-only retreat for guests ages 18 and older. The line currently has three sister ships: Scarlet Lady (the first in the fleet), Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady . The line's fourth ship, Brilliant Lady, is set to debut in September 2025.

All the ships in this adults-only cruise line feature 1,404 cabins (most with balconies) and RockStar Quarters suites, where guests have access to Richard's Rooftop, an exclusive outdoor deck space. The superyacht-inspired vessels boast 20-plus eateries, including restaurants by Michelin-starred chefs, and a variety of onboard fitness and wellness spaces. At Redemption Spa, relax and recharge in the mud room or salt therapy chamber – and then take rejuvenating dips in the hot and cold plunge pools. You can even order a bottle of bubbly anywhere on the ship via the Virgin Voyages app's secret "Shake for Champagne" feature.

Itineraries on Virgin Voyages span destinations in the Caribbean, Europe and Morocco, as well as trans-Atlantic crossings. The line will also feature 21 new ports across its global fleet in 2025, including destinations in Iceland, Turkey, Oman, Italy, Portugal, the Cayman Islands and more. Cruise fares cover meals at all the dining venues and basic beverages such as soda, water, tea and coffee. Gratuities for the crew, Wi-Fi access, entertainment and group fitness classes are also included. While on board, be sure to indulge in a swanky dinner at The Wake and an immersive show at The Red Room, a unique multiform theater at sea.

P&O Cruises

P&O Cruises ship at port at sunset.

Courtesy of P&O Cruises

Two ships in P&O Cruises' U.K.-based fleet – Arcadia and Aurora – are exclusively for adults 18 and older. Arcadia, the slightly newer of the two ships (debuted in 2005), carries 2,094 guests at double occupancy, plus 866 crew. The ship departs from Southampton in the U.K. and sails to a variety of European destinations, ranging from Spain and the Canary Islands to Norway and Iceland; some cruises visit the U.S. and Canada. The ship will also sail world cruises in January 2025 and 2026.

Arcadia's 15 restaurants, cafes and bars include Indian cuisine with a British twist at Sindhu, as well as steaks and seafood by renowned British chef Marco Pierre White at Ocean Grill. Passengers can take a class to sample the line's branded gins; sip Champagne at Intermezzo, the ship's cocktail and Champagne venue; or enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif at the yacht-inspired Spinnaker. After exploring exciting ports of call, head back on board to enjoy Arcadia's elegant interiors and top-notch service. You can splurge on a stone therapy treatment and a visit to the thermal suite at the spa for some extra pampering, followed by a live show at the three-tiered theater, The Palladium. Then, finish off the evening dancing the night away at The Globe.

Aurora is a slightly more intimate ship, carrying 1,874 passengers (double occupancy) and 850 crew members. A four-level atrium gallery sits at the heart of the vessel. Itineraries include destinations in the Mediterranean, the Baltic, the British Isles, Iceland, the Caribbean and South America. There are 19 restaurants, bars and cafes on the ship, including club-style restaurant Alexandria and casual spots like The Beach House. After dinner, live entertainment and dancing await you at the show lounge Carmen's, as do larger productions at the ritzy 660-seat Curzon Theatre.

Top Cruises Designed for Adults

While some all-inclusive – or mostly all-inclusive – boutique and luxury cruise lines are family-friendly, many of the onboard venues and activities are adult-by-design. Since there are few (or no) activities geared toward younger cruisers and no babysitting services, you typically won't find parents with young children on these ships.

Azamara's four upscale boutique ships provide immersive travel experiences geared toward adults. These smaller ships – accommodating a maximum of 702 guests – sail waterways and rivers that larger ships can't access, docking in city centers and unique ports of call around the globe.

Many Azamara voyages also offer longer stays and overnights in port, unlike some competitors' itineraries. Some even feature special events, such as a 12-night voyage from Rome to watch the Monaco Grand Prix in May 2025, or a 25-night cruise in February 2025 from Buenos Aires, Argentina , to attend Carnival in Rio de Janeiro . In addition, the line is extending its offerings on Country Intensive voyages in 2024 and 2025 with itineraries in various continental European countries, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Iceland and Australia.

On board, you'll find a wide selection of casual and formal dining options ranging from Windows Cafe to the main dining room, Discoveries Restaurant. Specialty restaurant offerings include top-notch steak and seafood at Prime C and Italian fare at Aqualina. Atlas Bar is a unique venue on Azamara Onward (the line's newest ship), though its artisanal cocktail menu is also available on the line's other ships. Discoveries Lounge is another guest-favorite spot, and wine aficionados will enjoy pairing limited-production and rare vintages from the Wine Cellar with dinner.

Cruise fares include stateroom accommodations; select spirits, wine and beer; gratuities; 24-hour room service; and nonalcoholic beverages. You'll also have access to complimentary AzAmazing Celebrations with special evening and daytime events ashore and on the ship. You can purchase a package that includes additional amenities like unlimited Wi-Fi, specialty dining, shore excursion credits and other perks. Butler service and other extras come with suite accommodations.

When it launched in 2019, Scenic Eclipse I was touted as "The World's First Discovery Yacht." The intimate vessel offers an all-inclusive, ultra-luxurious experience for just 228 guests (double occupancy). The line's second luxury yacht, Scenic Eclipse II, which is nearly identical to its sister ship, debuted from Lisbon, Portugal , in April 2023. The Polar Class 6 rating enables these two yachts to sail to destinations like Antarctica; on these expedition-style voyages, the ship carries only 200 guests and offers a nearly one-to-one crew-to-guest ratio.

All suite accommodations include a private veranda or terrace; butler service; state-of-the-art amenities; a king-size Scenic Slumber Bed; and an in-suite minibar stocked with wine, spirits and other personally selected beverages. You'll also find indulgences like onboard helicopters for intimate excursions and the line's submersibles for underwater exploration.

Guests can enjoy up to 10 dining experiences on the ship, including French fine dining at Lumière; innovative Asian flavors at Koko's Asian Fusion; Italian, steak and seafood specialties at Elements; or an immersive dining experience at Chef's Garden @ Epicure. When it's time for an after-dinner drink, sample craft cocktails or the impressive selection of whiskeys available at Scenic Lounge Bar. Other onboard activities include getting an invigorating treatment at Senses Spa or just relaxing with Champagne and spectacular views on deck 10 at the Sky Bar.

Scenic's ships sail to destinations in Australia and the South Pacific; Europe and the Mediterranean; Asia; the Americas and the Caribbean; and the polar regions of Antarctica and the Arctic.

Guests can try Seabourn's new Mediterranean venue, Solis, on four of the line's ships, including Ovation. You'll also find health and wellness programs curated by Dr. Andrew Weil.

The Seabourn Conversations program is another highlight. Accomplished experts host adventures ashore, participate in meals and chat with guests on board. Windstar's six intimate ships accommodate between 148 and 342 guests. Passengers can choose between cruising on one of the line's three-masted Wind Class vessels or one of its three Star Plus Class ships.

These two vessels will feature 112 suites with private verandas and infinity windows, two Owner's Suites with wraparound balconies, a water sports platform, a two-story spa and fitness center, and more. The ships are constructed with ice-strengthened hulls that position them for exploration in remote destinations like Antarctica.

Windstar's adult-focused and casual – but still elegant – onboard experiences feature locally inspired top-notch dining, guest lecturers, a water sports platform on all ships, an open bridge policy and an engaging social environment. If you're looking for a romantic getaway, Windstar is also regarded as one of the most romantic cruise lines for a wedding, honeymoon , vow renewal or anniversary trip, especially in magical destinations like the South Pacific or Europe.

Windstar's smaller ships can reach ports, coves, harbors and villages that are not accessible by larger vessels. They also offer more than 2,000 immersive cultural experiences in port, many with small groups. You'll find culinary-themed voyages in partnership with the James Beard Foundation, as well as wine-focused itineraries around the world. What's more, Windstar's itineraries offer late evenings and overnights in its ports of call, allowing guests to experience local culture and cuisine after dark.

Windstar will begin sailing in South America in December 2025 with the 312-passenger (double occupancy) Star Pride, offering excursions to UNESCO World Heritage Sites like the town of Cusco , Machu Picchu and the Galápagos Islands .

Other Top Adults-Only Cruise Options

While these larger ships offer activities for families and children of all ages, adults can also find hidden retreats and venues just for grown-ups. These spaces are typically quieter and situated away from the crowds.

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises offers spaces created with adult guests in mind. On Celebrity Beyond and the newest addition to the fleet, Celebrity Ascent , adults can have a unique dining experience at Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud. You'll also find an impressive wine list to accompany your dining experience.

When it's time to relax, The Solarium is a popular adults-only area located on the Resort Deck of all Celebrity ships. This light-filled pool area encased by a glass dome is the perfect quiet space for reading a book or taking a nap. While there, you can also grab a light breakfast or lunch at the Spa Cafe and Juice Bar, or order your favorite cocktail while lounging in the hot tub.

Other adult-focused venues to check out on Celebrity Ascent, Beyond and Apex are the new elevated bar spaces. The Edge series World Class Bar – a popular spot on other Celebrity Cruises ships – features craft cocktails in a beautiful setting. And don't miss the two-story Sunset Bar on Celebrity Ascent, a reimagined space by interior designer and TV personality Nate Berkus. The aft location of the bar offers almost twice the space as previous iterations and beautiful wake views.

The Sanctuary, a retreat for guests ages 18 and older, offers an escape from bustling public spaces. The relaxing top-deck venue is available on all Princess Cruises ships and features plush lounge chairs, a spa-like setting and Serenity Stewards, who serve light bites and other refreshments. To fully unwind, consider reserving a private cabana, where you can book an open-air massage. The child-free venue varies from ship to ship, with some offering the exclusive Retreat pool, cabanas and a bar area, and newer iterations featuring more space.

Spellbound by Magic Castle is an exciting new venue aboard the line's newest ship, Sun Princess, for adults 21 and older. The collaboration with The Magic Castle private club in Hollywood offers guests an evening of magic, illusions and theatrical cocktails in a Victorian-inspired space.

If you're heading off the ship for an excursion to Princess Cays (the cruise line's private island in the Bahamas), plan to chill out for the day in an adults-only Sanctuary Bungalow. Located just minutes from the ocean and beach, the rentals accommodate four people, and the price includes two complimentary float rentals. You can also order a gourmet picnic to enjoy while lounging on shore.

Back on the ship, adults can reserve a spot for the line's new Winemaker Dinners, a partnership with Caymus Vineyards. These 12-guest evenings are offered fleetwide, two to three times during each cruise. Winemaker Chuck Wagner personally selected the wines from the notable Napa Valley winery to pair with the elevated five-course menu.

Carnival Cruise Line

Though Disney Cruise Line tends to attract families and younger travelers, it also offers multiple spaces and activities for adults 18 and older. Disney's newest ship, Disney Wish , boasts several luxurious adults-only venues featuring characters and scenes from "Beauty and the Beast."

For top-notch steaks, contemporary Italian cuisine and panoramic ocean views, make a reservation at the Cogsworth-inspired Palo Steakhouse. If you prefer French-style fare and world-class wines served in an elegant and shimmering setting, Enchanté by three-Michelin-starred chef Arnaud Lallement is the perfect place for a romantic dinner for two. Before dinner at either venue, enjoy a signature cocktail at The Rose. After dinner, you won't want to miss the galactic libations and ever-changing views of faraway galaxies at the adults-only Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge bar.

Depending on the ship, adult travelers can also dance the night away in a trendy club, watch live entertainment or a cabaret show, catch a sports game on satellite TV, or relax with an after-dinner cocktail at a bar or lounge. Outdoors, the kid-free Quiet Cove Pool is a tranquil place to relax on all the ships. For even more pampering, Senses Spa & Salon boasts treatment rooms with ocean views, luxurious spa villas and other amenities. On Castaway Cay, Disney Cruise Line 's private island, adults can head to Serenity Bay – a scenic, adults-only stretch of the beach.

Spice H2O is another adults-only venue on the Norwegian Bliss, Joy, Escape, Getaway, Breakaway, Epic, Star and Spirit vessels; access is complimentary. At night, the space becomes an open-air dance club where you can spend the evening partying under the stars.

Royal Caribbean International

Michel Verdure | Courtesy of Royal Caribbean International

Solarium is Royal Caribbean International 's complimentary, child-free space open to guests 18 and older. Located at the front of every ship in the fleet, this indoor-outdoor oasis (or indoor-only on Quantum Class ships) offers impressive vistas and endless views of the sea. Thanks to a full glass canopy over the interior space, adult passengers can enjoy quiet lounging areas, swimming pools and whirlpool tubs with a view, no matter the weather. Select ships feature a cascading lagoon for further relaxation.

Be sure to grab a tropical cocktail or zero-proof drink at Solarium Bar (or Sunshine Bar, on Quantum ships) to sip poolside while enjoying the ocean vistas. Guests of both bars must be at least 21 years old when sailing from North America or a minimum of 18 when departing from South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Adult cruisers (18 and older) can relax and chill out at the first suspended infinity pool at sea at The Hideaway on Royal Caribbean's newest ship, Icon of the Seas. The beach-vibe neighborhood, perched eight stories above the sea at the back of the ship, features Champagne cocktails, a DJ spinning tunes, full-size daybeds, a wraparound bar, and endless ocean and sunset views from the multilevel terrace.

Frequently Asked Questions

"Adults-only cruise ships – or adults-only spaces on cruise ships – have become increasingly popular over the years," says Chris Gray Faust, executive editor at Cruise Critic. "That's not only because fewer people are having families. It's also because parents themselves often want the chance to get away, either by themselves for a romantic trip or with friends to celebrate a special occasion, girls' or guys' weekend, or milestone birthdays."

"I seek out adult spaces on cruise ships primarily because I want my experience on a ship to mirror my life on land – a little quieter, with more sophisticated food and drink options," she explains. "I also appreciate the opportunity to connect with my friends who are parents in a space where we can have personal one-on-one conversations or let loose a bit with some drinks. Adults with children are more than just their kids, after all – and they also appreciate a space where they don't have to worry about their little ones."

Anne Scully, a partner at the luxury travel company EMBARK Beyond, says, "With so many cruise lines and sailings, it's always a good idea to have options – and adults-only cruises are very popular." She adds, "Viking and Virgin have always focused on adults-only cruises and most river cruises also cater to adult passengers."

Adults-only cruises are designed with guests ages 18 and older in mind, from the staterooms and dining venues to the onboard entertainment and shore excursions. What you typically won't find on board are water or theme parks, climbing walls, game rooms, and restaurants serving kid-friendly foods.

If you're looking for a relaxing, fun and romantic vacation without the kids in tow – and you don't want to deal with the other passengers' children on your getaway – consider booking a sailing specifically for cruisers at least 18 years old. Alternatively, select a cruise line or ship that caters to mostly adults and doesn't offer any services, kids clubs, babysitting or activities for children.

You don't have to be a kid to be a Disney Cruise Line fan. While the line does not have an adults-only vessel within the fleet, there are plenty of kid-free spaces for adults only. Adults can enjoy cocktails, dinner and entertainment in several venues and relax at designated pool areas on the ship. There's also private, adults-only stretch of beach, Serenity Bay, on the line's private island, Castaway Cay.

In addition, Disney offers one of the best programs to keep youngsters entertained at sea, so you'll find that many of the children hang out in the kids club during the day and in the evening. These club spaces are divided by age groups, and they're typically open until midnight or 1 a.m. so parents – and even adults without kids – can enjoy a night out on the ship sans kids.

What is the current price of silver today?

The price of silver opened at $27.39 per ounce, as of 9 a.m. ET. That’s up 0.58% from the previous day’s silver price per ounce and up 14.46% since the beginning of the year.

The lowest trading price within the last day: $27.16 per ounce. The highest silver spot price in the last 24 hours: $27.51 per ounce.

Silver spot price

The spot silver price reflects what traders buy and sell silver for immediately, or on the spot. In contrast, the futures price reflects the price for silver delivered in later months.

The spot price for silver in the foreign exchange market is denoted as XAG/USD. Traders buy and sell silver 24/7 globally, so its price fluctuates constantly.

The price of XAG/USD reflects the value of one ounce of silver in U.S. dollars, and it is traded like traditional currency pairs. Because silver trades occur globally, investors can also track the spot price of silver in other currencies, such as XAG/EUR for euros and XAG/GBP for British pounds.

Silver price chart

The chart below shows how the spot price of silver is trending over the year.

Silver is up 14.46% since the beginning of the year, as of 9 a.m. The 52-week high reached $29.80 on April 12, 2024, and the 52-week low dropped to $20.69 on October 2, 2023.

The spot price of silver represents the current market rate at which silver can be exchanged and immediately delivered. But similar to gold, silver prices can be provided in troy ounces, grams and kilograms. Notably, a troy ounce, the standard unit for quoting silver prices, is slightly heavier than a standard ounce, with one troy ounce equaling 31.103 grams or 1.097 ounces.

The worldwide silver spot price calculation is a complex process, influenced by several factors and majorly impacted by futures contracts rather than physical silver trading.

Precious metals spot prices

Silver is one of four main precious metals investors can trade via physical bullion , exchange-traded products or futures contracts. Gold, palladium and platinum spot prices are also updated 24/7 in a variety of currencies.

Gold/silver ratio

The gold/silver ratio is the price of an ounce of gold divided by the price of silver per ounce. As of today, the gold/silver price ratio is 84.58.

The gold/silver ratio is significant because it is a tool for comparing the relative values of these two precious metals over time. This ratio helps investors and traders understand how the value of gold and silver fluctuates compared to each other.

The high ratio suggests that gold is more expensive than silver, indicating a market preference for gold as a haven, which can mean economic uncertainty. Conversely, a lower ratio implies that silver is gaining value or that gold is becoming less expensive.

This ratio can also indicate potential buying opportunities. For instance, if the ratio is historically high, some investors might see it as a cue to buy silver, expecting the ratio to revert to a long-term average.

The gold/silver ratio is also used to gauge economic health. Shifts in the ratio reflect changes in market sentiment and economic conditions.

Silver price history

Silver prices fluctuate based on multiple variables, such as supply and demand, geopolitical events, currency strength, economic data, and changes in investment trends. The historical spot price of silver has thus been characterized by high volatility, with significant fluctuations over the decades.

In the mid-1970s, silver was valued at less than $10 per ounce. But it saw a sharp rise toward the end of the 1970s, peaking at over $49 per ounce by 1980.

Despite this sharp rise, the prices fell back down, and by the late 1980s, silver was trading under $10 per ounce again. This level persisted for years, with prices not surpassing $10 per ounce until 2006.

The Great Recession marked another significant period for silver prices. In March 2008, the price nearly doubled to about $20 per ounce, potentially driven by the global banking crisis and subsequent economic measures like quantitative easing.

But this was followed by another sharp decline, bringing prices back to around $10 per ounce in October 2008. Silver experienced another historical climb, reaching above $45 per ounce in April 2011.

The highest peak of silver prices was around $49.45 per troy ounce in January 1980. Conversely, the lowest trough for silver prices was around $3.56 per troy ounce in February 1993.

This history reflects the deep drawdowns and high run-ups characteristic of the silver market, influenced by various factors such as economic crises, market speculation and investor behavior.

Silver future prices

Key global exchanges, including those in cities like Chicago, Hong Kong, London, New York and Zurich, facilitate nearly 24-hour trading of silver. The COMEX, a branch of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, plays a pivotal role in setting the silver spot price, using futures contracts to project silver prices.

Silver futures are a financial contract where a buyer agrees to purchase, and a seller agrees to sell, a specific amount of silver at a predetermined price on a specified future date. The standardization provided by silver futures makes the contracts easily tradable on exchanges.

Silver ETPs

Silver exchange-traded products come in various legal structures, including closed-end funds and grantor trusts.

These ETPs generally hold silver bullion in audited storage regardless of their structure. They trade on exchanges with tickers similar to stocks , allowing investors to buy shares representing fractional exposure to the silver stored.

The price of a silver ETP can fluctuate, trading at discounts or premiums to its net asset value. This variation is often due to supply and demand imbalances in the market.

Additionally, investors should be aware of annual management fees and other expenses, which can impact overall returns.

Investing in silver

Investing in silver can be approached in several ways, each with unique benefits and considerations:

  • Bullion. This direct method involves owning physical silver bars and coins. But investors must consider storage and insurance costs, dealer markups, and the bid-ask spread when buying and selling.
  • ETPs. These are available in most brokerage accounts and offer a more accessible alternative. But investors face ongoing annual expense ratios and possible tracking errors relative to the spot price of silver. It's important to note that redeeming shares for physical silver is only sometimes guaranteed.
  • Futures. Futures allow for speculation or hedging against price movements. Trading these derivatives is done on margin, making it highly volatile and potentially unpredictable. It requires a thorough understanding of the market and its risks.

Is buying silver a good investment?

Whether silver is a good investment depends on an investor's objectives, risk tolerance and the specific time considered. For some, silver can be a way to diversify a portfolio that already includes stocks and bonds.

But investors must be aware of several factors: The limitations in accessing silver in different forms, its high volatility, and the potential for extended negative or flat return periods.

It's also important to understand that investments in silver can experience multiyear troughs and may not always align with broader market trends or inflationary pressures.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Silver’s highest historical price was $49.45 per ounce on Jan. 18, 1980.

Silver’s effectiveness as a hedge against inflation is mixed and varies by time and location. While some studies indicate that silver does not correlate well with consumer price movements in the U.S., it has shown some correlation in the U.K. market over the long run.

But for a more reliable hedge against inflation, investors might consider other commodities like energy and agricultural products. These often have a more direct and consistent relationship with inflationary trends.
