Black Myth: Wukong - Everything We Know About Gameplay, Release Date, and More

All our info on the studio, story, and lore behind this unique adventure..

Matthew Adler Avatar

Black Myth: Wukong is an upcoming action-RPG focusing on traditional Chinese folklore that has gained traction since its surprise announcement last year .

This is the first large-scale project from Chinese indie developer Game Science and it looks incredibly ambitious. So much so that Game Science founder Feng Ji wants viewers to “forget” the footage that was revealed as it was intended to attract developers to join his studio and feels it does not represent the team’s best work.

Everything We Know About Black Myth: Wukong

Black Myth: Wukong may not be a household name yet, but it’s already attracted a lot of attention following its recent announcement and gameplay trailer. This is the first large-scale project from Chinese indie developer Game Science and it looks incredibly ambitious. So much so that Game Science founder Feng Ji wants viewers to “forget” the footage that was revealed as it was intended to attract developers to join his studio and feels it does not represent the team’s best work.

Who Is Developing Black Myth: Wukong?

The studio behind Black Myth is Game Science, a Chinese indie studio based in Hangzhou and Shenzhen. It was founded in 2014 by former Tencent developers .

Previous titles include the mobile and PC free-to-play games 100 Heroes and Art of War: Red Tides. Before launching Game Science, many of the developers that were at Tencent’s Quantum studio were working on an MMORPG called Asura West (also based on Journey to the West) that allegedly underperformed for Tencent, although it’s unclear if this is why some of the team departed.

While Game Science is currently a very small team, it is using the early announcement to draw new talent to the studio to help finish Black Myth.

Black Myth: Wukong’s Story

While we don’t have many specific details about Black Myth’s story at this time, we know it’s based on the classic Chinese tale Journey to the West , one of “the four masterpieces” of classical Chinese literature . A portion of this original story focuses on Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King, who appears to be the main character in Black Myth: Wukong.

In Journey to the West, Wukong’s story follows him from birth through his journey to learn Taoism and become immortal, while mastering language and combat along the way. He also acquires the 72-methods of heavenly transformation, allowing him to transform into many different animals and objects at will.

Who Is The Main Character?

In Journey to the West, Sun Wukong is known for his incredible speed and strength as well as the ability to transform into various animals and objects, all of which was displayed in the gameplay trailer for Black Myth. He wields a magical black iron staff that can grow in size or shrink based on its owner’s commands.

According to the book, Wukong possesses a number of abilities including:

Shapeshifting into different people, animals, and objects

Cloning himself or various forms of himself

Cloud somersaulting

An incredible leaping ability allowing him to leap 108,000 li (or over 33,000 miles) at a time

Weather manipulation

Spells to control gods and spirits

Various forms of armed and unarmed martial arts combat

A special breathing method that grants him immortality

Black Myth Gameplay

With two gameplay trailers released ( including the recent Year of the Ox update ) we have a good look now at what to expect from Black Myth: Wukong. Black Myth is a 3rd-person action/RPG, mixing environmental exploration with skill-based Souls-like gameplay. Wukong is armed with his signature magic-imbued black iron staff weapon, and at one point we catch a glimpse of it growing in length and sweeping an entire army off their feet in one fell swoop.

During the original trailer we got a glimpse of an ability that allows Wukong to transform into a golden cicada to traverse the world and evade enemy detection. Opponents appear to range from small groups anthropomorphic monkeys, tigers, and foxes to massive armies (a la Dynasty Warrior) which Wukong must defeat all by himself.

In the updated trailer, Wukong appears to use new abilities including transforming into a skull-filled boulder that can deflect attacks, parrying large groups of enemies, freezing enemies in place before striking them, and transforming into three flying creatures that can rain down lightning from above.

Some of the standout fights in the trailers feature giant boss enemies including a giant wolf-like creature, a giant rolling spider made entirely of bones, a lightning-wielding sword fighter and mage, a large fire-breathing rat-like creature, a smaller, yet equally terrifying flesh-covered mouse, a giant humanoid ox, and many more.

When Is Black Myth: Wukong’s Release Date?

No release date has been announced at this time, but Game Science is aiming for a PC and console release. A FAQ on its website states that it “shouldn’t take 500 years,” so hopefully we see Black Myth: Wukong sooner rather than later.

Divinity Chronicles: Journey To The West review - "A Monkey-ful experience that did not go South"

Devotees of antiquities would immediately have the bell in their head rung at the mention of Journey to the West as a deeply complex and virtuous tale that stands head to toe to some of the world’s oldest classics such as Homer’s Illiad. It bears a significant cornerstone to the Chinese civilisation ever since its conception and has gone on to garner a worldwide appeal and fanfare. Time and again, this timeless masterpiece made its global footprint at the forefront of cultural exchange and starred as a trademark icon in many facets of entertainment, be it movies or video games.

The Monkey King had its fair share of appearances across titles regardless of prestige and size. Cut the long-winded nag, to add to the never-ending pile of games based on the literature, comes Journey to the West - a Kickstarter indie goodie packaged neatly in a deckbuilding box and is the brainchild of Zhan Yu (Z Studio), available exclusively on the App Store and Steam.

Heck, if you got the luck of the draw, you can call upon them in mid-battle and make use of their cards with varying effects such as healing, or have them act as your personal damage sponge. In your arsenal, you can harness extra quirks through consumables or relics.

With that said, Z Studio got the core formula of team-building games right, even with just one character (minus the generic allies alongside you). You are treading on deep water when it comes to strategic planning with the many cards at play, each with its rarity that scales with energy cost. Feeling ballsy? Just go ham by stacking your buffs and see big red numbers as well as carcasses of your foes.

The premise of the story remains faithful to the lore. To rewind, you play as the Monkey King - heaven's primary troublemaker and free-to-play players' sole unlocked character - who whips up a storm of mischief in the kingdom until subjugation comes literally at the hands of Buddha. One fateful day, the Goddess of Mercy descends and awards you a "get out of jail" ticket for dealing with an insidious monster outbreak heralded by the Devil King. Now it is up to you to clear the streets of stalking apparitions with the MonkeyBar.

Hilarity can ensue as story dialogue leave a lot to be desired and come packed with that signature jank commonly produced by machine translations. Despite this, it did not fail to portray the extreme duality of the hominid King’s personality: courteous and formal on one face, while gung-ho and haughty when his alter-ego switch is flipped.

The effect that Journey to the West had on video games

A monk, a pig, and a monkey walk into a bar...

It's time to start the week off right with another Kim Justice video! And this one is hopefully the first in a new series that should be coming around every so often called Virtual Adaptation -- a set of videos looking at games based on or inspired by a novel, film franchise, person, event, and so on...the first entry of this series is a classic Chinese novel: Wu Cheng'en's Journey to the West, a 14th century tale about a Buddhist monk by the name of Xuanzang who goes on a journey to India in search of Buddhist texts. Along the way, he meets up with several helpers -- including, most famously of all, Sun Wukong (also known as Son Goku) the Monkey King, a riotous, strong and violent simian who's ready for action after chilling under a mountain for 500 years.

Journey to the West's episodic tale has inspired more than a few games, most of which get covered in this video -- there's Capcom's classic Arcade game SonSon , the Saiyuki World series of NES platformers by Jaleco (the second of which was localised in the West as Whomp 'Em ), and an intriguing PS1 strategy RPG by Koei called SaiyukI: Journey West alongside several others. Two games certainly stand out though -- there's Super Monkey Daibouken on the Famicom, an utterly inexplicable quasi-RPG that's right up there as one of the very worst games ever made, a legendary kusoge that is, frankly, a baffling creation that you gaze upon as if it were an old wreck, wondering what on earth happened. There's also Enslaved: Odyssey of the West - - while not a retro game, it's a detailed adaptation of the story that places it in an overgrown, post-apocalyptic America. It's a little flawed in some areas, but the beautiful graphics and story have made it something of a cult title, even if it sadly didn't receive enough attention at the time to warrant a sequel being made.

a journey to the west game

Being the first episode in a series, there are perhaps still some kinks to iron out here and there -- in particular, the question of how far one should go when it comes to selecting titles. One big decision I made while writing this video which I could have perhaps approached differently was the inclusion of games based on Dragon Ball, a classic anime/manga series which is heavily inspired by Journey to the West...ultimately I chose not to include it -- Dragon Ball is a big franchise all on its own with plenty more strings to its bow than just this one novel and a whole lot of games of its own, and this video would not have really been able to do those justice...as a franchise, Dragon Ball is more than big enough to warrant a video entirely on its own, which may or may not happen in the future. Still, it could have been mentioned at least...but there we are. It's all about calibration.

a journey to the west game

In any case, hopefully there will be more videos in a simliar vein on other topics in the future -- this one was a good starting point, with a decent range of titles and just enough of them to cover most everything without having to dart back and forth between dozens of games. Also, the first entry in a new series gives me the opportunity to ask what things people might like to see covered in the future -- so if there's anything that you'd like to see here, don't hesitate to let me know in the comments. But for now, hopefully you enjoy this video!

The Best Video Games Based On Classic Literature

  • Many video games draw inspiration from books, not just movies and TV shows. Classic literature can provide rich material for game developers to adapt and create new narratives.
  • The Lord of the Rings Online stands out as a game that directly takes inspiration from J.R.R. Tolkien's novels, allowing players to participate in the War of the Ring and explore the rich world of Middle-Earth.
  • Castlevania is a game series that adapts Bram Stoker's Dracula in a selective way, focusing on the iconic villain and his Transylvanian castle while introducing new characters and elements from other horror stories.

Many video games take their cues from movies and TV shows. It's not surprising given they're all visual mediums. Developers and artists simply have an easier time translating something that they can see. That said, books can be an equally fruitful source of material.

RELATED: Best Lesser Known Sci-Fi Books To Read During The Holidays

That's why classic literature has inspired several of gaming's greats . The titles are sometimes direct adaptations of the novels, letting players tackle the books' iconic events in different ways. More often than not, however, the developers pick and choose aspects to adapt. They then fashion these facets into a new work to capture audiences both new and old. Both approaches can succeed in the right hands, and these games prove that.

The Lord Of The Rings Online

The lord of the rings trilogy by j.r.r. tolkien, lord of the rings online.

Platform(s) PC

Released 2007-04-24

Developer(s) Standing Stone Games

Genre(s) MMORPG

Metascore 86 (Shadows Of Angmar)

J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and other Middle-earth novels are among the greatest literary works of all time. The world of Men, Elves, Dwarves, and other creatures is so rich in detail, history, and culture that fans could swear it was real. At the center of it all, however, are poignant tales of humble heroes triumphing over evil and power corrupting the noblest individuals. These traits are a reliable guide for any narrative. It's partially why so many LOTR games exist, even if most of them use the aesthetic of Peter Jackson's movies.

On the other hand, The Lord of the Rings Online takes inspiration directly from the books. This MMORPG makes players a pivotal part of the War of the Ring. Their deeds have a tremendous impact on events in the mainline trilogy, both on the frontlines and behind the scenes. That's because the narrative tackles the northern conflict and other plot threads described in supplementary works . This material provides hundreds of hours of content as players partake in quests and activities of all stripes.

What's more, these storylines unfold within iconic locales beautifully brought to life. LOTRO truly lets fans live in Middle-Earth.

Castlevania

Dracula by bram stoker.

Platform(s) Nintendo Entertainment System, Switch, PS4, PC, Game Boy Advance

Released 1987-05-01

Developer(s) Konami

Genre(s) Platformer, Action

Metascore 74 (GBA)

One of the great faces of horror is Count Dracula. In Bram Stoker's novel, the vampire terrorizes Victorian London, drinking the blood of innocents and corrupting others into his soulless servants. All of it is to slake his constant thirst and desire for conquest. As effective as he is, the villain transcends the source material and appears in several works outside his original book.

One of these is Castlevania . This action platformer series sees players try to vanquish the evil count in his home. The gothic castles and other haunted settings make for eye-popping level design, and it's always fun to slay classic horror monsters with a trusty whip. Despite these strengths, loyalists may take issue with some of these games .

RELATED: Movies Every Dracula Fan Should Watch

Castlevania is selective in how it adapts Bram Stoker's book. Dracula is the overarching villain, and his castle still lies in Transylvania. Yet instead of using Jonathan Harker and Mina Murray as protagonists, the narratives follow the vampire-slaying Belmont clan.

That said, some series entries incorporate more elements of the source material than others. For instance, John Morris of Castlevania: Bloodlines is the son of the novel's Quincy Morris. The series has also included characters from other scary stories, such as the titular vampire from Carmilla and the monster from Frankenstein . For these reasons, Castlevania is more of a horror highlight reel than a direct translation.

The Witcher

The last wish by andrzej sapkowski, the witcher 3: wild hunt.

Platform(s) Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox One

Released 2015-05-19

Developer(s) CD Projekt Red

Genre(s) Action, RPG, Adventure

Metascore 94

The Witcher series is another rich fantasy realm, albeit one rife with racial strife and international conflict. The books, written by Andrzei Sapkowski, follow Geralt of Rivia, a mutated monster slayer who desperately tries to maintain his neutrality. That aim becomes increasingly difficult amid moral and ethical dilemmas, and it's virtually impossible when these dilemmas threaten the people he cares about. While the books may not be decades old, they are highly regarded as some of the best examples of Polish literature of all time.

Fans feel that conflict in The Witcher games. These titles present complex plots involving ambitious power plays, crushing betrayals, and inner turmoil. They technically take place after the books, but they maintain many of the same characters. In addition, they carry similar themes about the price of neutrality and choosing the lesser evil .

RELATED: Novel-Based Fantasy Worlds Ripe For MMOs

It all culminates in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt . This is a sprawling sandbox encompassing more of Sapkowski's world than ever before. The game has countless quests to complete, and these are all engaging in how they respect the novels' cynical messages and moral ambiguity. More importantly, the title brings Geralt's journey to a satisfying conclusion by reuniting him with his surrogate family. In the end, he shapes a meaningful legacy beyond being just a Witcher.

Enslaved: Odyssey To The West

Journey to the west by wu cheng'en, enslaved: odyssey to the west.

Platform(s) PS3, Xbox 360, PC

Released 2010-10-05

Developer(s) Ninja Theory

Genre(s) Action, Adventure

Metascore 82

One might expect this sci-fi title to have similar sci-fi roots, but Enslaved: Odyssey to the West actually takes inspiration from a classic Chinese folktale: Journey to the West . The classic story chronicles a Buddhist monk's pilgrimage to retrieve a set of sacred scrolls from India. He encounters various demons and other obstacles, and his only defenses are his companions--all inspired by animals like a monkey and a pig. The timeless tale has inspired numerous other stories in fiction.

It also forms the backbone of Enslaved . The game may lack a monk, but it does have Trip, a girl wishing to return to her faraway village. She receives reluctant aid from a couple of unscrupulous individuals: Monkey and Pigsy. In a nod to its Asian roots, the former sports a staff for both melee and ranged combat. It also facilitates some enjoyable (if derivative) platforming. The real attraction, though, is the story.

Enslaved evolves the narrative's themes of finding enlightenment, maturity, and redemption. These emerge not just through the compelling characters and their growing bond, but also via the concept of slavery. In an uncertain world, some people may prefer the solace and blissful ignorance of servitude. Who wants to "enlighten" themselves and face reality in an apocalypse ? The plot puts an unsettling twist on the usual quest for freedom, and it's a journey that not everyone would embark on.

Spec Ops: The Line

Heart of darkness by joseph conrad.

Released 2012-06-26

Developer(s) Yager Development

Genre(s) Third-Person Shooter

Metascore 77

Very little hype was given to this game leading up to its release, but Spec Ops: The Line quickly became an under-the-radar hit thanks to its hard-hitting narrative about the moral grayness and psychological depravity of warfare. A standard third-person military shooter on the surface, Spec Ops hid a much deeper game underneath.

What many don't know is that Spec Ops is based on the Joseph Conrad novella Heart of Darkness. The same story that inspired the classic Vietnam War film Apocalypse Now, Spec Ops' Captain Walker is essentially a reversal of the novella's protagonist, Charles Marlow, with Walker becoming more akin to the novella's eventual antagonist, Kurtz (or Konrad in the game, a play on the name of the original author), by the game's conclusion.

The themes of civilian casualties, the trauma of war, and the flaws of the American war machine's presence abroad that made Apocalypse Now so affecting are all present in Spec Ops: The Line , and while the story is a bit less philosophical than its inspirations, those inspirations still shine through.

From Dragon Ball to Enslaved, the Best Retellings of Journey to the West

Wu Cheng'en's epic tale, Journey To The West, has been retold in many different ways. Here are five of the best reimaginings of the classic story.

Journey To The West is one of the most influential stories of all time. First published during the Ming Dynasty, Wu Cheng'en's epic is considered one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature.

The story has influenced thousands of different works in all forms of media. References and retellings of the story continue to appear, with the currently-airing The God Of High School suggesting that it too will intertwine with the epic tale. However, if you want more adaptations of the Monkey King's journey, here are five of the best reimaginings of Journey To The West .

Dragon Ball

Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball   needs no introduction. Since it started in 1984, the series has been a smash hit, spawning a massive franchise that is famous all over the world. In interviews, Toriyama has said that when he made Dragon Ball , he wanted to create something with the basic theme of Journey to the West but with " a little kung fu" added in .

Because of this, the series is full of references to the classic work. For instance, the lead character of the manga, Son Goku, is named after the Japanese reading of Sun Wukong, the protagonist of Journey to the West . Much like his namesake, Son Goku uses a magical size-changing staff and a flying cloud during his adventures. And, both Goku and Sun Wukong spend their time looking for magical artifacts that are said to  bestow a great prize on the person who collects all of them .

One of the most direct references to Journey to the West is the Ox-King. The Ox-King is the name of a demon found in the original work and both he and his Dragon Ball counterpart are first encountered in a castle that sits atop a flaming mountain. In the World of Akira Toriyama artbooks, Toriyama has drawn many images of Dragon Ball 's core cast as their corresponding Journey To The West character, showing just how close the two stories are.

Enslaved: Odessey to the West

British development studio, Ninja Theory, released Enslaved: Odyssey To The West on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2010. It's an action-adventure game that takes the story of Journey to the West and sets it in the future. After a global war, most of humanity is wiped out and the world becomes overrun by murderous robots.

The player takes control of Monkey ( played by Andy Serkis ) who wakes up in a prison cell on a slave ship. During an escape attempt, Monkey causes the ship to crash. Once he recovers from the crash, Monkey finds that Trip, another prisoner, has placed a slave headband on him, forcing him to comply with her demand to escort her back to her home village, a journey that is very reminiscent of the one that Sun Wukong takes in the original story.

Other characters from the original tale also make an appearance during the game, including Pigsy, who, in this version of the tale, helps lead Trip and Monkey to a giant robot called “Leviathan." Pigsy also got a DLC pack, called "Pigsy’s Perfect Ten." This mission pack is set before the start of the game and focuses on Pigsy trying to build a robot friend.

Both the game and its DLC received very good reviews from gaming publications, most of whom commended the game's beautiful environments and high-quality voice acting. However, the game didn't sell as many copies as hoped and Namco Bandai decided to cancel the planned sequel before it entered development.

Kazuya Minekura's Saiyuki was first serialized in the magazine GFantasy between 1997 to 2002. It has spawned a massive franchise that includes sequels, anime adaptations and even stage musicals. The series is set in a world where demons, magic and modern technology all co-exist and intermingle.

When peaceful demons suddenly turn violent, the Sanbutsushin commands Genjyo Sanz to travel to India to prevent a mysterious group of people from resurrecting the Ox-Demon-King, Gyumaoh. On this journey, Sanz is accompanied by Son Goku, Sha Gojyo and Cho Hakkai. However, these companions are not what they seem. In fact, they are all demons who are only kept under control by the magical trinkets they wear. The series is known for its action as well as its bishōnen-influenced male character designs. This, mixed with its unusual setting means that the series has a unique visual style that sets it apart from other adaptations of Journey to the West.

Unruly Heroes

Created in 2019 by Magic Design Studios, Unruly Heroes was released on the PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One  and the PlayStation 4 . The game allows players to play as Sanzang, Wukong, Kihong and Sandmon. Each character has different abilities and players must swap between these characters to solve complex platforming challenges. The game was praised for its fluid character animations and highly detailed backgrounds, as well as for its excellent co-op play.

However, while the game is heavily influenced by Journey to the West it also heavily changes the narrative, turning the story into a light-hearted comedy that only has superficial relations to the original source material.

The Forbidden Kingdom

Released in 2008, The Forbidden Kingdom is the first time action legends Jackie Chan and Jet Li have co-starred   together. It features an all-star cast and was directed by Rob Minkoff. The film tells the story of Jason Tripitikas, a teen from South Boston. While browsing in an old store, Tripitikas finds a golden staff. During a robbery, the store's owner tells Tripitaka to return the staff to its rightful owner. Agreeing with the man's request, Tripitaka flees but ends up falling off a roof.

When Tripitaka wakes up, he finds that he has been transported to mythical China and now has to save the world from an evil warlord who has turned the Monkey King to stone. The film was commended for its impressive fight choreography and intense and innovative fight scenes, though many reviewers criticized the film's pacing.

From accurate retellings of the original legends to series that use the myth as a jumping-off point to all-new narratives, Journey to the West continues to be a fountain of inspiration. There is no doubt that the Monkey King and his companions will be going on many more journeys and inspiring countless new writers for decades to come.

🏀 Behind NCAA president Charlie Baker's love of hoops

  • Purdue heads to the Final Four, starting a celebration 44 years in the making

a journey to the west game

DETROIT — The old Purdue coach took a seat while the celebration roared around him. Gene Keady had labored for this moment for a career and it never came. But now it has, and so he sat there smiling, an 87-year-old man with a piece of the regional championship net tied to the back of his cap. Zach Edey, who was two years old when Keady coached his last game at Purdue, had given it to him.

"I'm just glad to have it," said Keady, who won 512 games at Purdue, but never this one. And once coached a young Boilermaker named Matt Painter. “It’s kind of like a dream come true.”

⛹️  2024 MARCH MADNESS:  Men's NCAA tournament schedule, dates

Later, Edey would say, “You've always got to pay respect to those that came first. He built this. It doesn't go over our heads. He helped set this all up. To be able to pay him back and give him a little piece of net, it's the least I can do.”

Well, that and score 40 points with 16 rebounds.

Nearby, a woman in a black and gold Boilermaker shirt dabbed the tears in her eyes. Meanwhile, Painter watched his team cut down the regional title nets that had always eluded him and explained what was going through his mind.

“What I’ll reflect back on is not having to make that last speech at the end of the season that I have forever. That speech stinks. We’ve all got ‘em. Only one coach doesn’t get to use it,” he said.

“Happy for our players, happy for our fans, and happy for my man Gene Keady. It’s such an advantage to take a job and have a blueprint and have a program and have everything. Times change, schematic things evolve, but there are certain core principles that he instilled in our program that we just had to follow. It's not easy, but it makes it easier, that’s for damn sure.”

And that’s the way it was the Easter Sunday Purdue basketball finally came out of its long, long shadow.

Forty-four years. That’s how long it has been since the Boilermakers could say they were going to a Final Four. Until Sunday, that is, when they survived an absolute trial by fire with Tennessee 72-66; a rite of passage so intense and so badly wanted by both sides, there were four jump balls when masses of players went to the floor fighting for the basketball, like football teams trying to recover a fumble. A match made magical by the duel between the Boilermaker center who is national player of the year and the Volunteer guard who is second on most ballots. Mano a mano, Zach Edey a Dalton Knecht.

Forty points for Edey, 37 for Knecht. They combined for 77 of the 138 points – 56 percent of the points scored in an epic battle. And a late crucial play was as fitting as it was decisive, with Edey blocking a Knecht driving layup that cooked Tennessee for good. They each left nothing but admiration on the other side.

Purdue guard Braden Smith on Knecht: “He’s an unbelievable player and he showed it tonight. When somebody shoots the ball like that, there's just not a whole lot you can do.”

Tennessee coach Rick Barnes on Edey: “We were playing against a guy that has a unique game, obviously,”

✍️  Tracking 2024 March Madness men's records by conference

Purdue is going to the Final Four. The last time anyone could say that, ESPN had just been born, and CNN had not yet launched. You could get a gallon of gas for buck, and a hamburger at McDonald’s for 28 cents. Mike Krzyzewski was coaching at Army, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird were NBA rookies, there were professional sports teams called the Houston Oilers, Baltimore Colts and Montreal Expos. There have been eight U.S. presidents since then.

And as the long-suffering Boilermaker fans understand in their hoop-happy state, there have also been two national titles and four Final Fours for the school down the road at Indiana University. Even Butler made it twice. It was easy to feel haunted in March. Not anymore.

In those 44 years, Purdue had bounced from one heartbreak to another, like a pinball machine. Keady went to 17 tournaments and two Elite Eights but never broke through. Painter followed his mentor and went to 14 before this spring. Still, the gods of March were merciless. There were incredibly untimely injuries and tough losses, sucker punch after sucker punch.

National player of the year Glenn Robinson injured his back the night before the Elite Eight game against Duke in 1994. Local legend has it he was hurt in a pillow fight at the hotel with teammates. With a below-par Robinson, the Boilermakers lost the next day 69-60.

Robbie Hummel was three-time All-Big Ten player, but blew out his knee. Twice.

In 2018, 7-2 center Isaac Haas injured his elbow during a first-round victory and sat in the locker room afterward, assuring one and all he’d be OK for the next game. Within 30 minutes came the announcement that his elbow was broken and he was out for good.

The Boilermakers were within seconds of deliverance in the Elite Eight in 2019 when Virginia somehow turned a missed free throw and long rebound into a basket at the buzzer that forced overtime. The Cavaliers ended up the national champion.

Then came the past three painful years with losses against double-digit seeds, the awful nadir last year’s shocker to Fairleigh Dickinson.

Roll all that together and you had a star-crossed program with a tortured fan base, and a team desperate to change the narrative. Could anyone outside the Purdue circle possibly understand the hunger of those inside the circle to make the past go away?

“Zero percent chance,” said guard Fletcher Loyer. “I see fans crying, We’re crying. All the stuff we’ve been through, it’s awesome. A lot of weight off the shoulders, a lot more relaxing. But we’re not done.”

Painter has been the most conspicuous victim of this tournament wickedness, winning game after game during the season, stacking up Big Ten titles, but never able to get over the proverbial hump. “People say things about you and knock you,” he said. “You don’t like living with yourself at times.”

But no one could miss how well he has pushed the buttons on this team, right up to Sunday. The Boilermakers came in as the nation’s best 3-point shooting team but missed 12 of the 15 they put up against Tennessee. They missed 12 free throws. They were once down 11 points. But Painter and his team found a way, Throwing the ball to Edey, for instance. He shot 16 free throws in the second half.

“We've been through it all as a team,” Edey said. “There's no scenario we haven't been in before. We're never going to panic. We're going to keep playing, keep executing, keep doing what we do.”

So instead of walking back to a shattered locker room with his head down after an agonizing exit, Painter could savor the moment with his players on the court. Edey was in such a hurry to embrace his coach, he ran up and grabbed Painter just as he was about to shake Barnes’ hand. The Tennessee coach had to wait. “When that Mack truck comes at you what are you going to do?” Painter said of his center. “(Barnes) was very gracious to be able to give us that moment. He’s a class guy,”

It was an alternate universe from Fairleigh Dickinson only 12 months before. One of the first things Painter did after the game was find Gene Keady. “He should have been able to experience this because he deserved it,” Painter said. “And you feel a little bit of guilt right?”

But it would be hard to find anyone who does not believe Matt Painter finally deserved this moment.

“You get a lot of different people coming at you, and you’ve got to be strong in your convictions,” he said of the past. “I think we were strong in our convictions in terms of how we play and how we do things.”

And he has the most distinctive weapon in college basketball to help forget the dark days.

“I get to pay him back,” Edey said, “Like there were so many coaches that looked over me. I could name a coach that looked over me. Tennessee. Rick Barnes is a great coach, but he was at our practice, looked over me. It's kind of been the story of my life. People have doubted me. People looked past me. Can't do that anymore.”

Can’t say Matt Painter hasn’t been to the Final Four anymore, either. The man with the net tied to the back of his hat Sunday afternoon really liked that. “If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here,” Painter said of his old coach. “He’s a special guy in my life,” Keady said of the former student who has just gone where he never could.

Caitlin Clark and Iowa are Headed Back to the Sweet 16

  • Author: Stephen Douglas, Special to SI.com

In this story:

Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes survived a scare in the second round of the NCAA women's basketball tournament on Monday night. Clark scored 32 as the Hawkeyes won an ugly 64-54 game against the West Virginia Mountaineers. With the victory Iowa advances to the Sweet 16 in Albany, New York, where they will face the No. 5 seed Colorado Buffaloes.

Clark, playing her final game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, struggled from the field, but was not alone as the two teams combined to make just 38 of 109 shots (34.8 percent). Clark finished with 32 points on 8-of-22 shooting and accounted for all five of the Hawkeyes' three-pointers on 14 attempts. In more positive news, Iowa's star broke Kelsey Plum's single-season NCAA scoring record with a late free throw.

JJ Quinerly led West Virginia with 15 points. The junior made a layup with 2:58 remaining that tied the game at 52. She attempted a go-ahead three-pointer for the lead on the next possession, but was blocked by Gabbie Marshall.

Iowa's Sydney Affolter scored the go-ahead layup a few seconds later and the Hawkeyes never looked back, finishing the game on a 12-2 run.

As rough as the game was, it was all forgotten when the final buzzer sounded. The home crowd immediately started to celebrate Clark and fellow seniors Marshall and Kate Martin. Marshall was held scoreless, but played great defense, while Martin scored seven points and collected 10 rebounds.

All three seniors returned to Iowa this season to try and win a championship. That journey will continue on Saturday.

How tall is Mark Sears? Alabama G leads Crimson Tide to new heights with first Final Four run

a journey to the west game

Alabama basketball has seen several heroes arise in its unlikely journey to the Final Four.

Mo Dioubate, in the middle of Ramadan , helped the Crimson Tide out of a tight jam in the second round vs. Grand Canyon . Grant Nelson offered his best game of the season to Nate Oats and Co. in a thrilling 89-87 win over 1 seed UNC in the Sweet 16.

REQUIRED READING: Inside the speech that changed Alabama basketball season en route to March Madness run

But no player was as routinely excellent as Mark Sears who, despite being the shortest player on Alabama's team in 2023-24, has had perhaps the biggest impact of anybody on Oats' team. Against 6 seed Clemson in the Elite Eight, he scored a game-high 23 points on 8-of-18 shooting (including 7 of 14 from 3-point range), winning the West Region MVP and, more importantly, leading Alabama its first Final Four ever.

Here's what you need to know of Sears' height:

FOLLOW THE MADNESS: NCAA tournament brackets, scores, schedules, teams and more.

How tall is Mark Sears?

According to Sears' Alabama basketball player bio , he is 6-foot-1 — the shortest player on the Tide's 2023-24 roster by an inch. The next-closest player in terms of height is Kai Spears, who at 6-foot-2 averages 1.6 minutes per game for the Crimson Tide this year. Latrell Wrightsell Jr. and Aaron Estrada are tied for the third-shortest players on the team at 6-foot-3 each.

Sears spoke about his height following Alabama's win vs. Clemson on Saturday, which avenged a previous loss to the Tigers the Crimson Tide suffered in Tuscaloosa in November 2023:

"The hard work always pays off," Sears said in a postgame interview. "Hard work undefeated, man. I wouldn't be here without the hard work. Look at me, I'm 6-1, I ain't got the potential like I did in high school and all these young guys in high school. But you know hard work is undefeated. And give all the honor and glory to God."

REQUIRED READING: Alabama radio call: Chris Stewart calls Crimson Tide basketball reaching Final Four for first time

Mark Sears stats

Entering Saturday's game vs. Clemson, Sears was averaging 21.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game, all while shooting 50.6% from the field and 42.9% from 3-point range.

Against the Tigers, he scored 23 points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal while shooting 44.4% from the field and 50% percent from 3-point range. Here's a game-by-game look for how Sears has played in March Madness thus far:

  • vs. (13) College of Charleston: 30 points (69.2%), four rebounds, five assists
  • vs. (12) Grand Canyon: 26 points (44.4%), 12 rebounds, six rebounds
  • vs. (1) North Carolina: 18 points (50%) two rebounds, two rebounds
  • vs. (6) Clemson: 23 points (44.4%), three rebounds, two assists

Regardless of how tall he may stand, Sears for a brief moment towered above all else when he helped cut the net down in Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles:

More importantly: He has helped raise Alabama to new heights with the Crimson Tide's first Final Four in program history.
