First matryoshka nesting doll

Although the concept of nesting objets d'arte and even nesting dolls specifically originated outside Russia, matryoshka ("little mother/matron") have become the most iconic of their kind. The earliest known example was created in 1890 at the Children's Education Workshop based in Abramtsevo, Moscow, which was bankrolled by industrialist and patron of the arts Savva Mamontov. Carved by woodworker Vasilii Zvyozdochkin and decorated by painter Sergei Malyutin, it was dubbed "Rooster Girl" referring to the cockerel under the arm of the largest figure. Inside were seven other figures of descending size all in traditional rustic attire, including a female holding a scythe, a female holding a bowl (possibly containing porridge), a boy holding a broom and the smallest of which was a baby wrapped in a patchwork quilt.

The earliest examples of nesting decorative objects date back some 900 years before the emergence of the matryoshka. In China, around 1000 CE, craftsmen were making nesting boxes, both for storage and ornamental purposes. This idea of objects inside objects was also adopted by Japanese artisans, and it's in Japan where decorative wooden eggs and later dolls of decreasing size are thought to have first appeared, with nesting figures of deities such as the Shichi-Fukujin (Seven Lucky Gods) becoming popular souvenirs during pilgrimages, particularly in the Edo period (1603-1868).

Some historians suggest that Zvyozdochkin and Malyutin were inspired to create the matryoshka after Mamontov's wife, Elizaveta Mamontova, returned from a trip to Japan with a nesting doll; others assert that they developed the idea independently as a hollow doll in which toys or other gifts could be concealed within.

The matryoshka doll gained global attention after being exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, France, in 1900, where it received a bronze medal.

What is the best souvenir to bring from your tour to Russia ? Undoubtedly, a Matryoshka - a Russian wooden doll with smaller dolls stacked within the bigger ones, considered to be a symbol of Russian folk art and culture.

The word "Matryoshka" is among the top 5 words strongly associated with Russia. Only a few Russian words were borrowed by the languages of the world unchanged; Matryoshka is one of them. Despite the fact that the word is hard to pronounce, different spellings can be met in English texts: "Matrioshka", "Matreshka", "Matreoschka" or even "Matrushka". At the same time, there are other references to Matryoshkas: babushka dolls or nesting dolls. But how are nesting dolls made and what do Matryoshka dolls represent?

Japanese Ancestor of the Beauty

Matryoshka goes further than 125 years back. The first Matryoshka appeared in the late 19th century near Moscow. The doll's ancestor is a figure of the Japanese sage Fukurama which depicted a good-natured old man with an outstretched head. The figure could be split and had a smaller-sized figure of the same sage hidden inside, which in its turn also contained a smaller sage, and so on until the fifth one.

The Fukurama figurine was brought to Russia by Elizaveta Mamontova, wife of a major industrialist, entrepreneur and patron Savva Mamontov, from her travel to the island of Honshu. At the end of that century, the turner Vasily Zvezdochkin machined and artist Sergei Malyutin painted a wooden image of a beautiful woman on the first Russian doll holding the name “Matryoshka”.

Fun Fact The Matryoshka's design was inspired by a figure of the Japanese sage Fukurama which illustrated a good-natured old man with an outstretched head.

Mother of a Huge Family

The new doll was given the name Matrona, which was one of the most popular female names in Russia of those years. This name derived from the Latin word "mater" (mother) and was considered appropriate for a mother of a large family.

The first Matryoshka doll, which has since then become a symbol of motherhood, was painted under the image of a simple peasant girl in a sundress with an apron and a kerchief on her head. Till now Matryoshka symbolizes the continuation of life.

The industrial production of Matryoshka soon began at the Moscow toy factory. First Matryoshkas consisted of 8 figures, embedded into each other, alternating girls and boys. Each figure was different from another, and the last one was a tiny figure of a swaddled baby, thus representing the entire family with kids of different age.

Peak of Popularity

The export of Matryoshka began at the beginning of the 20th century. This was highly promoted by the Leipzig Trade Fair; and since 1909 Matryoshka became a permanent exhibit of all exhibitions in Berlin and was shown at the annual bazaar of handicrafts in London. The lovely character of a Russian woman gained popularity first among visitors of various exhibitions and then quickly caught on in entire Europe.

Matryoshka's popularity peaked in the summer of 1957 when the World Festival of Youth and Students was held. 35 thousand participants from 131 countries came to Moscow; most of them bought Russian Matryoshka and carried them all over the world.

The main purpose of the doll is to surprise. Matryoshka can be not only a female; some portray young cowherds, others a bride and a groom, famous artists and politicians.

Craftsmen who paint Matryoshka are in no way limited to their imagination: the richness of colors, various styles of clothing. Sets of Matryoshka dolls can be dedicated to the historical events, illustrate characters of fairy tales, fables and other literary works.

So, where and how are Matryoshka dolls made and is it possible to determine their origin? Matryoshka dolls are made of linden and often it's very easy to determine in which region of Russia the Matryoshka has been made.

The Main Types of Matryoshka

The Sergievo-Posadskaya or Zagorskaya Matryoshka is very contrasting and with simple gouache painting techniques. The doll's kerchief is tied in a knot with only two strands of hair visible. The blouse is patterned, the sundress has circles, and the apron usually has a floret. 

The Semionovskaya Matryoshka originates in the Nizhny Novgorod region. Such dolls are distinguished by the informal manner of painting, the bright primary red and yellow colors, and the lack of strict criteria of the image. Semionovskaya Matryoshka always has a floral design with images of flowers such as roses.

The Maidanskaya Matryoshka also has Nizhny Novgorod region roots, but is habitually made in a small Russian village called Maidan. These dolls can be easily recognized by the small scarf or shawl with, a large flower on the head, as well as the smooth contour and elongated proportions.

The Vyatskaya Matryoshka is from the Vyatka region. Due to special manufacturing skills, this kind of Matryoshka is considered to be the most difficult to create as in addition to painting each doll is decorated with rye straw.

The Tverskaya Matryoshka from Tver region is often made in the form of a historical or fairy-tale character such as The Snow Maiden or Vasilisa the Beautiful. This kind of doll is among the favorite Matryoshka of Russian children.

There are also Matryoshka dolls of private authors made in different parts of Russia including Moscow, Kirov, Sergiyev Posad, St. Petersburg, or Tver. The design of these dolls depends entirely on their creator's imagination. The author, relying on the traditions, puts a new meaning into his or her creature resulting in creative dolls such as Matryoshkas-politicians.

Despite the many changes to sweep Russia in recent years, the only souvenir one must take home is (still) the famous Matryoshka doll . That would be the doll inside a doll inside a doll inside... And the best place to get a Matryoshka doll is at Izmailovsky Market , which is best reached via the dark blue line on the metro to Izmailovsky Park . Keep your wallet buried under several layers of clothing, and do not miss the shashlik (Russian barbeque). Side note: While strolling on the Old Arbat , you may notice the many vendors selling Matryoshka dolls. Do not be a tourist and buy one. It will cost you two or three times the price at Izmailovsky.

Matryoshka Dolls: From Fukurama to the Modern Era

If you had to name a souvenir someone would bring back from a trip to Russia, a Matryoshka doll would likely be the first thing that came to mind.

Also known as babushka dolls or nesting dolls, Matryoshka dolls come in various colors and styles and can be found displayed on shelves and mantels across the globe.

Have you ever wondered about the meaning behind these unique dolls? If so, their history and significance are explained below.

Before the Matryoshka, There was the Fukurama

The first Matryoshka dolls showed up near Moscow toward the end of the 19th century. Their ancestors date back much further, though, to Fukurama, a Japanese sage.

This sage was often depicted as a cheerful, older man with his head outstretched.

When the figure was split open, a smaller version of the sage was presented, with another smaller version inside of that one. Altogether, the Fukurama doll contained five sages, each smaller than the last.

How Did the Fukurama Figure Get to Russia?

Elizaveta Sapozhnikov, the wife of Russian entrepreneur Savva Mamontov , brought the Fukurama figurine back to Russia after traveling to the island of Honshu .

Inspired by the figure, a woodturner named Vasily Zvyozdochkin partnered with artist Sergei Malyutin to create a female version. They described the first Russian stacking doll as “Matryoshka,” and the name has stuck around ever since.

The word “Matryoshka” means “little matron.” The first doll was named Matrona, a popular female name in Russia that is derived from “mater,” the Latin word for mother.

The Matryoshka doll quickly became associated with motherhood and the continuation of life. The largest doll is generally considered to be the mother of the large family contained within her.

Industrial Production

Soon after Zvyozdochkin and Malyutin debuted the first Matryoshka doll, a toy factory in Moscow began producing them in mass quantities.

The original dolls contained eight figures, alternating between boys and girls. Because each “child” was smaller than the previous one, they represented a large family with children of different ages.

Matryoshka Dolls as Metaphors

Practically since their inception, Matryoshka dolls have served as metaphors for femininity in Russian culture.

Many people associate them with mothers and the critical role they play in a family. The mother carries her children within her, and those children carry on the family’s legacy.

Even those outside of Russia use the Matryoshka doll as a metaphor. For example, people refer to the “Matryoshka principle” to describe any object contained within a similar, larger version. It’s even shown up in education and biology research .

The 20th Century and Beyond

During the early 20th century, the Matryoshka dolls were exported to other European countries, including Germany and England.

The dolls became especially popular in 1957 when thousands of people from 131 countries visited Moscow to attend the World Festival of Youth and Students . Many of the attendees bought Matryoshka dolls during this event and then took them to their home countries.

From here, the Matryoshka dolls continued to grow in popularity. Creators also started to get more creative and experiment with different styles and types.

For example, some represented historical events or characters from fables and fairy tales. Others portrayed famous politicians and artists.

World Record Breakers

Most Matryoshka dolls are a few inches tall. However, in 2003, Youlia Bereznitskaia decided to try her hand at a larger version. She currently holds the world record for the largest set of Russian nesting dolls.

Bereznitskaia’s project features a 51-piece set, all hand-painted. The largest doll stands at one foot 9.25 inches, and the smallest is a mere 0.125 inches tall. When all the pieces are lined up side by side, they’re 11 feet and 2.25 inches long.

The Modern Matryoshka

Over 100 years after their invention, Matryoshka dolls continue to be recognizable and beloved additions to people’s homes worldwide. Apple even introduced a Matryoshka emoji in 2020!

Jef Gray and Samantha Sunne proposed the emoji as a “non-religious and non-political” symbol that could represent Russian, East European, and Far East Asian cultures.

Whether one wants a digital version or a large wooden set of dolls to display on their shelf, they have a wide range of Matryoshkas to choose from.

Demi Moore on Full Frontal Nudity With Margaret Qualley in ‘The Substance’: ‘A Very Vulnerable Experience’ but I Had a ‘Great Partner Who I Felt Very Safe With’

Demi Moore ‘s new film, the feminist body horror “ The Substance ,” sees her bare it all, with several scenes featuring full nudity. At the Cannes Film Festival press conference for the film on Monday, the 61-year-old actor discussed the “vulnerable experience.”

“Going into it, it was really spelled out — the level of vulnerability and rawness that was really required to tell the story,” Moore said. “And it was a very vulnerable experience and just required a lot of sensitivity and a lot of conversation about what we were trying to accomplish.”

“I had someone who was a great partner who I felt very safe with. We obviously were quite close  — naked — and we also got a lot of levity in those moments at how absurd those certain situations were,” she said. “But ultimately. it’s just about really directing your communication and mutual trust.”

As the film progresses, Moore becomes horribly disfigured thanks to the abuse her other half Qualley is inflicting on her. By the film’s last act, she quite resembles Anjelica Huston from the 1990 film “The Witches,” after she transforms into a humpback abomination.

Dennis Quaid also stars in the film as an “asshole,” as he described his character during the presser. The late Ray Liotta was meant to have the role before his passing in May 2022, and Quaid dedicated his performance to him.

“In my heart, I dedicated this role to Ray Liotta, who was set to play it,” Quaid said. “It was this week, two years ago that he passed, so I’d like to remember him. He was such an incredible actor.”

Cannes went wild for “The Substance” at its premiere on Sunday night, giving the film an 11-minute standing ovation , the longest of the fest so far.

In an interview with Variety , the French director discussed the film’s feminist themes, saying that body horror is “the perfect vehicle to express the violence all these women’s issues are about.”

With an undercurrent of #MeToo at this year’s festival as the movement grows in France, Fargeat hopes the film will shine even more light on the issue. “It’s a little stone in the huge wall we still have to build regarding this issue, and to be honest, I hope my film will also be one of the stones of that wall. That’s really what I intended to do with it.”
