The Cinema Snob : Okay, now that I am back from the road trip to see my dad and also to fight evil clowns and redneck cannibals, I will be going out of town next weekend as well, so come see us at WizardWorld Madison from November 30th to December 2nd, where we'll have all of our DVDs with us, plus if you use the promo code "CINEMA20," you can get 20% off your tickets, which you can do at www.wizardworld.com! And since I'm not wearing this UNCOMFORTABLE ONESIE FOR NOTHING, might as well talk about a movie now!

Okay, don't let my onesie fool you; I may be dressed like gift wrap, but I assure you that the movie I am about to show you is anything but a present! And if you would like to open my onesie as if it were a Christmas gift, do not let me stop you from seeing what's inside, heh-heh-heh! It's chest hair and a DICK!

If you ever wanted to see what was going on next door to the theater filming Ms. Velma's Christmas , then congratulations! Here's Santa Visits the Magic Land of Mother Goose ! That's right, this 1967 Hell play fits right along with Satan's Christmas film festival, which includes The Magic Christmas Tree and Santa's Christmas Elf (Named Calvin) ! Although it is a one-up on Santa's Christmas Elf (Named Calvin) , in that, well... things actually move in this one! We've seen how the people in Fun in Balloon Land celebrate Thanksgiving. Well, now I have a pretty good idea of how they celebrate Christmas.

Oftentimes on this show, we like to say things like "oh, this looks like community theater", or "oh, this is acted like it's a school play". But in this movie's case...

(Brief clip shown)

Snob: It is LITERALLY filmed on a high school stage! Now you know what happens when Herschell Gordon Lewis directs your Christmas pageant! No, seriously. It's directed by Herschell Gordon Lewis, the exploitation movie pioneer behind such early gore classics as Blood Feast and Two Thousand Maniacs! Explains the scene where Mother Goose pulls out Santa's tongue and eats it! And if you couldn't tell this movie is directed by an exploitation filmmaker who's directed everything from slasher movies to porn , look at the opening logo!

(Atlas Films logo)

Snob: Hm. Excellent. So are Santa and Mother Goose gonna FUCK? I hope not, because I don't wanna see anyone in this movie fuck!

Santa: Heh heh heh heh hehehehe! Hahahaha! Ha!

Snob: Oh ho ho, he's staring at pictures of his victims. Santa is introducing us to the Land of Mother Goose, I think. I don't know if he's sober!

Santa: And you know, after a busy day, I like to relax a little.

Snob: Santa had one too many nightcaps. This is DEFINITELY the same universe as Christmas Evil . How many people have you killed?

Santa: Mother Goose! Hahahahaha! And Old King Cole! You know, the merry old soul with his fiddlers three? Ha ha ha ha! And Little Miss Muffet? Ha ha ha ha!

Snob: Oh yes, that jolly Santa laugh! It isn't "ho ho ho", it's "heh heh heh heh heh heh"! Don't get too scared, kids. He's about to pass out!

Santa: You'll have to excuse me, but I'm so tired. *snores*

Snob: Okay, well, Santa's down for the count, so I guess the cameraman is gonna read us the bedtime story. And in case you didn't know how lazy this film is, YOU CAN ACTUALLY HEAR THE DIRECTOR YELL CUT!

Herschell Gordon Lewis: Cut!

Snob: They needed that in the movie to prove that the film actually has a crew! Unless that was just the elves ordering someone to cut open Santa so they can feast on his organs! It IS an H.G. Lewis movie.

Now we meet The Burger King, the best Mother Goose story. Or it might be Old King Cole. Whatever!

Old King Cole: Old King Cole was a merry old soul, and a merry old soul was he! Hee ha ha ha ha!

Snob: Tone it down, dancing Caligula ! Doesn't take long for ANYTHING to creep me out!

(Old King Cole rapidly opens and closes the opening of a balloon, making it squeak) Old King Cole: Oh, that's nice. I would've been all alone if you hadn't been here! (Balloon continues squeaking) Old King Cole: Oh, I think so too! (Balloon continues squeaking)

Snob: I've said it once and I'll say it again: STOP FUCKING THE BALLOONS!

Apparently, this Medieval Times could only get their craziest employee to work on the holidays. And if you think this isn't a very Gacy Christmas special, just wait until he opens that book again!

Old King Cole: Just take a look at that! (Close-up of an actor in a creepy doll costume)

Snob: NO WORDS!

Old King Cole: The only thing she's done since she's been here is sleep!

Snob: Because that's a skeleton from a child you suffocated to death by stuffing her in a book with no air holes! Don't worry, Mother Goose's voodoo curse has brought her back to life. Oh, I need a Christmas miracle!

Old King Cole: I think it would take a magician to make me happy! Disembodied Voice: What did you say?

Snob: Phew! I can't believe it's taken this long for God to step in and put a stop to these movies!

(Merlin appears)

Snob: Oh. That's not God, it's ANOTHER ESCAPED MENTAL PATIENT! This is Merlin, and I'm guessing the dunce cap means he put frogs in someone's sandwich in the school cafeteria. Merlin is definitely a magician. Watch this!

(Merlin makes his staff appear) Old King Cole: Ooh! Heavenly days! You are a magician! Why, that's wonderful!

Snob: Well, I'm convinced! (clumsily juggles VHSs) See? I'm a juggler!

Can you make this movie not terrifying?

(The creepy doll spins until the record winds down) Old King Cole: What? What what what what what's this?

Snob: I don't like these Annabelle movies anymore!

At one point, they mention Casper the Friendly Ghost- only they try removing the line for rights reasons.

Old King Cole: I used to have a little friend around the castle, who was a little ghost. A very gentle little ghost. His name was CaSpEr.

Snob: And they replaced his voice with the Budweiser frogs! Guys, I've seen Turkish Casper . No one is coming after you for this movie. By the way, that handkerchief? It's supposed to be Casper. Casper is so much better than this! And yes, I remember Casper and the Angels . Casper also gives Merlin a helping hand when he needs to wipe off semen from jerking off to that dancing nightmare doll. I always wanted to see Merlin fight with his own magic sperm! Ah, good, Casper is a pair of panties now! You rapey fucking ghost!

And when Cindy Lou Boo starts dancing, it really does feel like it's turning into the Eraserhead Holiday Special. Good, there's more. So this is what the animals were doing before they got a room in the Overlook Hotel and started fucking! They really need to be much nicer to their toys.

Old King Cole: That silly doll! I have never known what to do with her! (The doll walks offscreen with a gunshot noise edited in)

Snob: Pfuh! Lucky! Just kidding, he stuffs her in a castle to make sure she stays dead!

Old King Cole: Merlin! What are you doing with that sword? (Merlin sticks the sword in the castle he stuffed the creepy doll in)

Snob: Ah, yep! She's staying dead all right! Lame! If this were Ms. Velma, she would've just shot that doll with live ammunition! You know what makes a magic trick even more magical? Filming it with cuts! Oh my god, she's gone- but that rat that snuck in there is way dead. I've never seen Herschell use so many sharp objects with so little blood! That's the real magic trick. Congrats, boys, she's still a corpse.

Ooh! Another magic trick. Oh, good, it's just like your last magic trick, only this time you didn't stick swords in it! We just get a jack-in-the-box.

Old King Cole: But tell me sir, what does it do?

Snob: It makes Jack in the Box cheeseburgers!

Old King Cole: Perhaps it- he sings, or- or dances, or recites.

Snob: No! No, don't dance! Just make cheeseburgers!

(The jack-in-the-box clown dances)

Snob: This movie is an hour long, and we're not even halfway through it yet! Yep, it's one of those, where I constantly check the time and the time never seems to be moving forward! And why aren't there violins?

(Merlin makes violins appear)

Snob: Magical. I bet that effect looks great for those watching this live! Props for dancing so well with fucking Pazuzu staring at you! "But they're such an odd couple! This guy, am I right! What am I gonna do with him? I mean, seriously, keep this one away from sharp objects. He should be in a straightjacket! I don't know what I'm gonna do with him." Excellent. I just found the scroll and Wizard Whitebeard. If only I could find Waldo, then I can get the fuck out of this movie!

This film is so desperate for movie padding that they actually make the drum first before they can play it! I'm starting to understand why The Nutcracker and the Four Realms wasn't a big money-maker for Disney. How in the hell does this have $120 million budget?

(Merlin stabs a smiley face into the drum sheet)

Snob: Perfect! Now the drum will sound good! Ah, forget it, that drum was haunted by a dead child anyway.

Now we meet Princess Belle. She has dreams, and goals.

Old King Cole: He'll awaken you with a kiss, and everything will be lovely! Princess Belle: But he's looking for a sleeping beauty! Take a look at me. Do I look like I'm asleep to you?

Snob: Don't cry over the guy who goes around kissing sleeping women!

Old King Cole: Oh dear, I've never been able to handle crying females! Merlin, see if you can help her!

Snob: Then stop making girls cry, you creepy old king!

Oh good, they take her to the casting couch. I see this going well. Careful, or you'll say yes to being in The Puppet Inside Me ! And then Merlin and Old King Cole put her to sleep, because OF COURSE THEY DID! How else would she agree to their lame magic show?

(Merlin makes Belle float)

Snob: The biggest magic trick this movie pulled was trying to convince me that it's a Christmas film!

THUMBNAIL SEQUENCE

Snob: Yeah, yeah. This is all very magical, but when is Mickey Mouse gonna steal your hat ? Someone needs to clean up this fucking stage! And that doesn't mean introduce new creepy characters!

Prince: Where is she? Where is she? Your majesty, I was told I would find a princess here.

Snob: Don't tell the Boston Strangler where he can find sleeping women! And don't let him sing, either!

Prince: Never before and never again-

Snob: Plaugh! Thanks, Dion. Too much eggnog this Christmas? Now do your follow-up hit, "Why Must I Be a Teenager in Hate"!

(as Belle) "Buh, oh my God! Never do this to me again!"

Now slip something in her drink so you can both sing "Baby, It's Cold Outside". Anyway, everyone's back. Let the orgy commence!

(Everyone dances around the stage)

Snob: Feh! Will Steve Hollis please invent rock and roll in the Magic Land of Mother Goose?

I should've taken this shot as a sign that the Devil is about to show up.

Witch: (offscreen) Ahahahahahahaha!

Snob: Ah, the producer is here. Oh great, it's the witch from The Magic Christmas Tree . We just need Calvin to show up, and this can be a nightmare Christmas universe's Avengers . The witch uses her black magic to freeze them.

Witch: You'll be so nice- AS A FLOWERPOT! HA HA!

Snob: She's gonna stick flowers in your ass. It's good that she froze the Easter Bunny in a pose that makes it more comfortable for him to check out anyone's ass. Merlin, however, defeats the witch the same way he teases his dog when he's holding a treat.

And if that's not enough, try burying her alive!

(Merlin puts the witch in a coffin)

Snob: Hm! Are you really surprised this is turning into a snuff film? Herschell was the right person to show what a Christmas special would look like if it were directed by Sardu and Ralphus from Bloodsucking Freaks ! I think we all know what's gonna happen next.

(Merlin closes the lid)

Snob: He puts the comatose witch in a box and FUCKING BURNS HER ALIVE! That's right, burn, witch! Burn! Merry fuckin' Christmas! Eh, it's creepy, but it's not like they're gonna show us her toasted, skeletal remains.

(The box's walls fall away, revealing a prop skeleton)

Snob: *sputters* What the fuck, '60s?!

(Sudden scene end)

Snob: No! No! You can't just awkwardly cut away after that! The least you could've done is saved some of her meat for a Christmas feast, after you BURNT HER ALIVE!

Mother Goose finally makes an appearance. Might as well. She's a title character.

Mother Goose: Let me see what you're all about, Old King Cole!

Snob: He created the Witch Trials! They must've paid Vicki Lawrence a fortune for this crossover with Mama's Family . Good, they're unfrozen now. And suddenly they recognize a distinct burning flesh smell.

Mother Goose tries sending all of her characters back into the book, except Jack Sprat.

Mother Goose: Why, you're supposed to be the thin one! Remember? "Jack Sprat could eat no fat, his wife could eat no lean!"

Snob: Mm! They're gonna eat Jack Sprat, aren't they?

We'll help you lose weight, Jack. Here, get in this device we made to make mental patients go more insane. We'll strap you in there good so that there's no escape! You'll be in there for months! It's when they stuck more blades in that Herschell once again began twitching over the childrens' genre not letting him use buckets of blood. You got to burn someone! Now Jack Sprat isn't fat anymore. That's what months in the box will do to you: a Christmas miracle, I guess.

Just when you think it might be over, Raggedy and Rotting Ann scares the shit out of Scarlett O'Hara before her tennis match.

(The creepy doll slaps a woman)

Snob: And slapped the shit out of her!

(as Old King Cole) "Oh, chicks, bro! Haha! Why are these women so hysterical?"

Mother Goose: Do something! Old King Cole: I have had nothing but crying females today! I'm convinced that I can do nothing when a woman makes up her mind to cry!

Snob: Old King Cole was a very old-fashioned king. He liked his women high on uppers, and with a martini waiting for him on his throne for when he got home!

(as Old King Cole) "Don't cry, you can now use this as a feather duster! Clean my piano, woman! And get in the book so you can suffocate as well."

There's only 8 minutes left. So close, but so far away.

Old King Cole: Oh, I see. You pour it in that cone. Oh, well that's magical! Yes. Careful now! Don't spill any.

Snob: Mm. Now I know he can make bull semen disappear. Now let's get Little Bo Peep in here, and DO IT FORCIBLY!

Bo Peep: No! Stop pushing me!

Snob: Control your children, Mother Goose! Even the Old Woman in the Shoe is judging you. And they're totally gonna fuck that sheep. Rowdy-ass characters!

Old King Cole: You have been nothing but a disobedient, reckless ragdoll all afternoon and I won't stand for it! Merlin, you've got to teach this doll a lesson! (Merlin and Bo Peep secure the creepy doll from behind)

Snob: Hmm, don't wanna know what road we're going down now!

Then Merlin made her disappear and put her rotting corpse back in the book. Count yourself lucky- at least he didn't set you on fire! Oh, and God shows up again to make it all make more sense!

Disembodied Voice: Happiness comes through love for others. For, what are you, King Cole, and you, Mother Goose, without little boys or little girls to read your stories?

Snob: Who cares? They should be in prison! There, get back in there with the Sea King. You all deserve each other!

And now that that's over, the other title character can show up again.

Santa: I- I- I must've been asleep. Hehehe! *yawns* And I had a dream! Ohhhh, a wonderful dream. Hahahahaha!

Snob: Great. Santa is turned on by his own night terrors! The movie leaves us with a nightmare image that's not even matched by ANYTHING in ANY Silent Night, Deadly Night film!

Santa: Hahahahaha! Hohohohoho! Ahahahahaha! AHAHAHAHAHAHA! Ye-e-e-es! Aha! I'll see you all soon! Hahahahaha! Ha ha! Ahahaha! Hehehehe! Yahahahaha!

Snob: *sputters* Woah, they took the creepiness of Santa Claus is Coming to Town and fucking ran with it! Why is this movie bookended by the creepy Santa from A Christmas Story ? This is one Santa that makes the elves fight to the death, and the winner gets to FUCK HIM!

Let it be known that in Santa Visits the Magic Land of Mother Goose , that Santa never actually visits the Magic Land of Mother Goose. It's clear that this was not originally a Christmas film, and was only turned into such by adding Albert Fish Santa Claus to the beginning and end of the movie! Even the poster simply calls itself " The Magic Land of Mother Goose ", with no mention of Santa! Although thankfully, the film was later turned into a Broadway smash hit starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick as Old King Cole and Merlin.

Good lord! This stage special and Ms. Velma fucking deserve each other! Both of them are about the joys and wonders of Christmas, and murdering people on a live stage! Ugh! I'm gonna need WAY MORE holiday booze to make it through the rest of these movies!

Old King Cole emerges from a large book titled 'Stories of Mother Goose'. He laments the monotony of his life and the sole source of amusement being a life-sized rag doll, who he claims sleeps all day. King Cole expresses his longing for excitement, invoking the need for a magician.

Enter Merlin the Magician, who awakens the Rag Doll with a dance routine and performs various magic tricks. Additional quirky characters, including Chicken Little and the Honey Bear, join the scene, introduced by King Cole. Following a series of illusions and dance routines, Merlin captures Rag Doll in a box, executing the classic 'swords through the box' trick.

King Cole then presents a large box to Merlin, who produces a lively Jack-in-the-Box for entertainment. The court page introduces three violin fiddlers, followed by a dance-off between Jack-in-the-Box and Rag Doll. Further illusion tricks ensue, including Rag Doll appearing out of an empty barrel.

Sleeping Beauty seeks assistance in finding her Prince, leading to Merlin's levitation illusion and Prince Charming's arrival. The duo performs a duet, interrupted by the appearance of a Wicked Witch. A magical duel ensues between Merlin and the Witch, resulting in her demise.

Mother Goose intervenes, restoring order and returning the characters to the book. Merlin showcases additional magic tricks, including a disappearing milk act. Mary, in search of her lamb, engages in a confrontation with Rag Doll, resolved by Merlin's flower-blossoming illusion.

Little Bo Peep's quest for her sheep is marred by a scuffle with Rag Doll, necessitating intervention from King Cole and Mother Goose. Merlin conjures a sheep for Bo Peep, employing trick photography for its vanishing act.

King Cole decides to punish Rag Doll by returning her to the book. As Mother Goose advises King Cole to return to the book as well, Merlin's voice reassures them of his purpose to entertain and urges them to continue storytelling. King Cole bids farewell and fades away, followed by Mother Goose.

The scene concludes with a fade-out as Mother Goose returns to the book, marking the end of the performance.

Production History [ ]

The play was penned by Dr. Roy Fluhrer, the son of musical theater director Mary Fluhrer Nightswander. It premiered in Toledo, Ohio, in September 1965 and soon embarked on a midwest tour until July 1966. The touring show was produced by Jack Edwin Baker (aka Dr. Silkini), and starred real-life illusionist Roy Huston as Merlin the magician. Despite drawing large crowds, reviews were lukewarm, with critics presuming it was to have been more of a stage play than a magic show. Additional performances were staged in Ohio in 1971 and 1972.

Baker concocted a plan to keep the show running by committing it to film, so he hired Herschell Gordon Lewis to direct, though Lewis has stated that his "direction" consisted of just filming the play. It was shot without an audience over the course of two days with three cameras. [1] The exact filming location is unknown. It's frequently been stated that it was shot on the stage of a high school auditorium, but this fallacy is based on a generalized remark by Christopher Curry in his 1999 book on the films of Lewis." [2]

Release [ ]

Initially released in November 1966 as " Santa Visits the Magic Land of Mother Goose ," the film featured crude bookend scenes with Santa Claus narrating. Lewis claimed that the lab screwed up and reversed the opening and ending scenes, but no one noticed. [3] In early 1966, Santa was removed from the film (only to be reinserted in December) and it screened under the original title. It played in small venues until 1968, and then secured wide distribution as a kiddee matinee throughout 1970, boasting a personal appearance by Raggedy Ann, who burst " out of the screen " and danced in the aisles. It continued to play in movie theaters intermittently until 1979, frequently with a Raggedy Ann dancer.

In 1991, the Santa Claus version was issued on VHS by Sinister Video. The other version was later released by Something Weird Video on both VHS and DVD-R. On the Something Weird version, the entire reel with the Wicked Witch had eroded, become tinted red, and it prematurely cuts off. Something Weird stopped producing DVD-Rs in 2020.

Reception [ ]

Reviews for the stage version were middling. The Dayton Daily News said that "the presentation wasn't the greatest, or even great," but it was a "completely satisfying show for the young ones." The Courier Journal's Phyllis Funke praised the performances of Vallory Lynn as Raggedy Ann, Judith Snow as The Wicked Witch, as well as the magic portions, but remarked that the rest of the show was "tinged with amateurishness and the staging was static, making for lulls between magic feats." The Wisconsin State Journal's Elizabeth Gould was harsh in her appraisal, stating that, "the acting is as overblown as the writing is flat." She was especially put off by the burning skeleton trick, and concluded it was a "feeble attempt" at children's theatre.

Reviews for the film are even more brutal. Kiddie Matinee called it an "astoundingly dull monstrosity [that] redefines the word 'minimal.'" [4] Psychotronic Video's reviewer called it the worst H.G. Lewis film they'd seen, referred to the Raggedy Ann mask as a "death's-head face," and concluded, "I dare you to sit through it." [5] B&S About Movies called Raggedy Ann "horrifying," likened the film to being forced to attend a school assembly, and remarked that "the hour running time of this feels like a hundred years." [6] Abraham at A Wasted Life called the movie "famous for being unwatchable." [7]

Magic Land of Mother Goose

Review by Will Sloan Pro

Magic land of mother goose 1967.

Watched Nov 27 , 2020

Will Sloan’s review published on Letterboxd:

The same year he directed The Gruesome Twosome and A Taste of Blood , Herschell Gordon Lewis also made this exceptionally poor children's film. It's a filmed stage show (without an audience) in which various fairy-tale characters emerge from a Mother Goose storybook. Characters include Old King Cole, a living Raggedy Ann doll, Prince Charming and Sleeping Beauty (who sing a duet), a wicked witch, Merlin the Magician, and of course the girlboss herself, Mother Goose. Casper the Friendly Ghost is also here, but they added some audio fuzz to all mentions of his name for legal reasons.

Merlin is played by one Roy Huston, a magician, and this film was reportedly commissioned as a vehicle for him. Herschell did little more than show up and run the camera (or actually, two cameras - one capturing the action at a distance, the other also from a distance). Even in his better movies he seldom showed much of an eye for composition, and here he's trying to capture something that wasn't even conceived for the camera.

Bottom of the barrel stuff, and a rite of passage for all Herschell Gordon Lewis devotees.

  7. Magic Land of Mother Goose

Incredibly enough, as bad as Santa Visits the Magic Land of Mother Goose is, it's far from his worst. The burning witch scene alone saves it from being a One Star flick. The Magic Land of Mother Goose is a 1965 magic show that was marketed as a stage play and preserved as a 1966 film directed by "Godfather of Gore" Herschell Gordon Lewis (Blood Feast). As a gimmick, dancers dressed as the doll appeared live at ...
