Singapore, South Korea to allow quarantine-free travel from Nov 15 for those vaccinated against Covid-19

travel from singapore to south korea

SINGAPORE - People vaccinated against Covid-19 will be able to travel between Singapore and South Korea without quarantine from Nov 15.

The announcement by both countries means that Singapore residents now have a second option for leisure travel without quarantine, in addition to Germany.

The Transport Ministry announced on Friday (Oct 8) that Singapore will open up a new Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) with South Korea to facilitate travel for vaccinated travellers.

The jointly launched VTLs will be the first of their kind between two major aviation hubs in Asia and build on longstanding relations to safely revive cross-border air travel and people-to-people flows, said the ministry.

Flag carrier Singapore Airlines (SIA) said it will convert all the six flights it is operating between Singapore and Seoul into designated VTL services from Nov 16.

It added: "Customers are advised to carefully check the eligibility criteria for these VTL services once they have been published, and ensure they meet the travel requirements before their flights."

It has no flights between the two countries on Nov 15.

The Ministry of Transport (MOT) said that the agreement between Singapore and South Korea was marked by a video conference on Friday between Transport Minister S. Iswaran and the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of the Republic of Korea, Mr Noh Hyeong Ouk.

MOT added that Singapore and South Korea have also agreed on the mutual recognition of Covid-19 vaccination certifications, which take effect from Nov 15.

This will allow fully vaccinated travellers with proof of vaccination issued in either country to tap vaccinated-differentiated safe management measures in both countries.

MOT said more details about the arrangement with South Korea will be announced in time.

Mr Iswaran said both Singapore and South Korea have made excellent progress in vaccinating its populations, and the VTLs between the two countries reflect the trust in each other to manage the Covid-19 situation.

"This is another milestone as we reopen Singapore's borders, and resume air travel in a careful and calibrated manner," he added.

Before Covid-19, Singapore and South Korea were among each other's top travel destinations, with a total of 64 weekly passenger services connecting the two countries and carrying 1.6 million passengers annually.

Under the VTLs, fully vaccinated travellers will be able to travel between Changi Airport and Incheon International Airport, and do polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, in lieu of serving quarantine or stay-home notice.

There will be no restrictions on the purpose of travel or the need for a controlled itinerary or sponsorship.

Singapore last month started the VTL scheme with Brunei and Germany.

Germany had earlier opened its borders to Singapore, but Brunei's borders remain largely closed.

Under the VTL scheme, fully vaccinated travellers can come into Singapore provided they meet several requirements, such as staying in either the country of departure and/or Singapore in the last 14 days prior to departing for Singapore.

They have to fly on designated VTL flights and take up to four Covid-19 PCR swab tests, including one pre-departure test and one on-arrival test.

According to data from the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), South Korea was the ninth-largest market for Singapore in terms of international visitor arrivals in 2019, prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The top three markets were China, Indonesia and India.

South Korea had suspended visa-free entry and visa-waiver programmes for most travellers from 90 countries, including Singapore.

Foreign residents with valid visas are required to serve a 14-day quarantine at their own expense.

travel from singapore to south korea

Meanwhile, South Koreans are required to serve a 14-day quarantine in their homes after returning from overseas. However, fully vaccinated South Koreans and permanent residents are exempted from this requirement.

More VTLs are expected to be on the way, as Singapore looks to open up its borders and restore the Changi air hub to its former glory.

Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong said in Washington on Thursday that Singapore is working on establishing a VTL with the United States and wants to conclude it as soon as possible before the end of the year.

He said this follows successful VTL pilots with Germany and Brunei.

Follow our news, recent searches, travellers using vaccinated travel lane from singapore to south korea exempted from 10-day quarantine, advertisement.

SINGAPORE: Travellers using the vaccinated travel lane (VTL) from Singapore to South Korea will not have to undergo quarantine, the South Korean Embassy in Singapore said on its website on Thursday (Dec 2).

This comes a day after South Korea announced it would impose a 10-day quarantine  on all travellers from Friday - regardless of vaccination status - due to concerns over the Omicron variant.

"VTL travel arrangement would proceed without change at the moment," the embassy said in a notice, adding that any changes to the policy will be put up on its website.

"Given that the COVID-19 situation remains volatile, we advise all travellers to check our website regularly for the latest border control measures prior to travel," it added.

Travellers on the VTL to South Korea have to be fully vaccinated and must have remained in Singapore for the past 14 days. They are exempted from quarantine if they test negative for COVID-19 at Incheon Airport in Seoul.

Unvaccinated children aged six and above can enter Korea but will have to quarantine for 10 days, the notice added. Those below six are exempted from quarantine.

Travellers on the VTL must take a polymerase chain reaction test before they depart Singapore and when they arrive at Incheon Airport. They also have to take another test on the sixth or seventh day of arrival if they are staying for more than eight days.

South Korea to impose 10-day quarantine on all travellers regardless of vaccination status

Singapore's VTL with South Korea was launched on Nov 15 .

There was some uncertainty earlier on whether South Korea's new quarantine rules would apply to VTL travellers from Singapore.

In response to CNA's queries on Thursday afternoon, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) said it was awaiting more information from South Korean authorities.

"We are clarifying whether these requirements apply to the vaccinated travel lane arrangement for entry into the Republic of Korea. We are awaiting more information from the Republic of Korea authorities," said Mr Daniel Ng, CAAS' director for air transport.

Eligible travellers from South Korea can continue to enter Singapore under the VTL subject to COVID-19 tests, he added.

Earlier, the Singapore Embassy in Seoul said in a Facebook post at about 2.25pm that it was checking with South Korean authorities on how the quarantine would affect VTL travellers from Singapore.

In an update on Thursday evening, Singapore Airlines noted that South Korean authorities have confirmed that eligible travellers may enter the country quarantine free under the VTL arrangement with Singapore if they meet the entry requirements.

"Customers are advised to ensure that they meet all of the latest entry requirements before their flights, given the dynamic COVID-19 situation," said SIA in response to CNA's queries.

South Korea reported its first five cases of the Omicron variant on Wednesday. COVID-19 cases have also spiked since distancing curbs were relaxed last month.

Top 5 airlines serving from Singapore to South Korea

Really good! I like all the crew, they were so nice and very efficient.

Food tasted pretty good. Boarding was very smooth and efficient, compared to all other airlines I’ve been on. I have flown EVA, Cathay, Asiana, British Airways, and many USA brands. Cabin attendants were also efficient and professional.

My flight with Korean Air went quite well, I've flown with them for many years and have grown accustomed to their great service.

Overall, very uneventful and pleasant experience. Most importantly, no delays.

The flight crews were extremely professional, helpful, and courteous. Departure and arrival times were accurate. No delay. I will use K airline again. Thanks

We were seated at the back and that was very uncomfortable for me with the turbulence we experienced on our way to Chicago.

I enjoyed flying on Korean Air. The service was great and the food was yummy. They served white fish.

I enjoyed flying on Korean Air. The service was great and the food was yummy, especially the bibimbap and cold spicy noodles. The only thing that bummed me out on this red-eye flight was that my seat did not properly recline so I was not able to sleep.

On time and flight crew are always so happy to help and always smiling unlike other airlines.

Great crew, decent food Charging plugs were broken on both seats next to me. Only the USB port was available, and that charges, very, very slowly. Seat was also broken, it would not lock into position when reclining.

I recently had the pleasure of flying with Asiana Airlines, and I can confidently say it was an outstanding experience. From the moment I checked in, the staff demonstrated exceptional professionalism and warmth. The boarding process was seamless and well-organized, ensuring a stress-free start to my journey. Onboard, the flight attendants were attentive, courteous, and went above and beyond to cater to passengers' needs. The seats were comfortable, with ample legroom, and the in-flight entertainment options were diverse and up-to-date, making the flight enjoyable and relaxing. Additionally, the meals served were delicious and well-presented, reflecting a high standard of culinary quality. The airline's commitment to safety was evident throughout the flight, with clear announcements and a reassuring presence from the crew. Overall, Asiana Airlines provided a top-tier travel experience, and I would highly recommend them to anyone seeking comfort, quality service, and a memorable journey.

30 minutes from landing in Mongolia we had to turn around and go back to Korea due to a storm in the capital of Mongolia. We went back the following day. Safety first!

It’s wonderful service aboard. Delayed for departure but arrival in Korea went so well.

Ok, the flight was late and the plane was old. The check in crew in Narita were amazing however.

Seems like crew assumed you're korean. Not impressed by crew

One of the flight was delayed. The flight attendant of returning flight to LA was mean.

Flight attendants rude, they disappear for almost 3 hours not doing rounds to see what people needed. The laboratories were full of empty water cups, because they never come back to collect them.

Flew on an Airbus 350-900. Excellent aircraft properly cleaned and serviced. Flight crew was excellent plane departed and arrived on time. The A350 has excellent air circulation far better than the 777. I would recommend Asiana to anyone looking to fly in a clean comfortable environment. This is my second round trip flight from New York to Bangkok via Asiana and I will book Asiana again!

I could not choose my seat prior to check in

I had the most wonderful experience from CEB bag drop through deplaning. The staff, the aircraft, food, and cabin crew were all amazing. I want to give a kudos to Marky from Mactan Cebu's Asiana airport staff for his exceptional customer service and assistance.

Crews are not allowed to perform any service whenever the captain deems there’s a chance of turbulence. Even if it is perfectly smooth air.

They ran out of food for breakfast They did not offer tea or coffee The staff appeared very inexperienced The cabin was very cold, even with a blanket

Too many luggages for 1 passenger (4 bags) will make all the overhead luggage bins a challenge to fit them all. Some have oversized hand carry as in like back packer size bags shouldn’t be allowed as handcarry.

My experience with Scoot is very good. Will have no issue flying with Scoot again.

My overall experience with Singapore Airlines is great. Will definitely fly Singapore airline again.

Good flight. Fiod was ready a bit late hence a hurry to finish before landing. Excellent crew and service

Great to have actual hot tastey meal on a flight. Well done

I requested an aisle seat and got a middle seat The flight gate was changed and the flight was delayed

Cabin Crew always friendly and helpful. Seating cramped - foul smelling from toilets, high risk of disease. Guard personal property such as expensive sunglasses Coffee always awful and cold Meal trays toddler sized Not worth the extra cost to fly SQ - use a budget airline, same if not better experience

When boarding, after business class should be premium economy, but economy class already lined-up at the gate blocking premium economy to board. Singapore airline crew should done a better job to organize this chaos :( Thank you.

The cosmetic condition was pretty run down. The carpets were badly worn out. Even the paint on the wings was chipped and peeled! Looks like they are running these 787s to the ground..

WiFi didn’t work on both sectors so made killing time harder - planes clean modern and good flight crew - would do again if WiFi works

6hrs fly they dont give you a glass of water from seoul to singapore need to buy drink and food plus they charge for bag on international fly is always Free 1 bag from seoul to singapore is Not a local fly you are traveling true asia same story from singapore to Bali no water drink after payment for bag drink cost more the regular airline Well never use this company again we use regular company like Delta korea japan China and even scoot parent company Singapore Air

We had 2 attempts to land at Singapore Changing during a thunderstorm. Everything was delayed by 1 hour plus.

Boarding was not accordingly after front seat, bmf then back seat. This delayed for at least 40mins or more. The staff at Jakarta can do better. Is chaos at the entry to board the plane. This tarnished Scoot reputation when everyone was talking about it.

The crew was not customer oriented at all, even confrontational . The aircraft needs more attention to detail as far as comfort, and the 1 hour sitting at the gate with no air is inexcusable

We flew on the 787 Dreamliner direct to main gate at KLIA2, quick entry via eGate and on the train 41mins after touchdown. Go well SCOOT

Was on scoot plus. The only good thing about the flight was the spacious seats. Tables and armrests were extremely dirty Food: bad Entertainment: non existent Wifi: unable to connect, then was painfully slow that we couldn’t even send messages Good thing we had a night flight, so we just slept throughout.

Not clear why boarding passes could only be issued at the counter and not through the kiosk. I had already check-in on the web, so waiting to obtain a boarding pass 1.5 hours before the actual flight defeats the purpose of early web check-in.

no charging point. food offering is limited and very much on the budget line. Overall is not satisfying for such a price and duration of flight.

ok flight, but charged for everything. water, food, baggage. no free water available, I had to plead to give me water to take medicine.

Need to consider about zero entertainment services and lack of flight information!

I can't board the 2nd flight due to the last 1st flight. In the 1st flight check-in, I can't board due to the stupid problem of K-ETA visa. The booking system and the flight company should inform the customer a few days earlier. This is the worse experience in my life. I won't use KAYAK and the airline anymore. My friends were also surprised about this stupid situation. I won't use KAYAK and T'way anymore.

I can't board the flight due to the K-ETA problem. You should inform the customer clearly a few days before the flight. I can't cancel/change the flight now. This is the worst experience in my life. I also never hear about this kind of bad experience. I won't use the booking system and the flight company anymore.

These Are The World’s Most Religiously Diverse Countries

I n the quest for destinations to call home, the notion of safety often looms large on the list of considerations. For individuals whose beliefs may not align with the mainstream, the level of acceptance can be a critical factor in choosing where to settle.

On this journey of discovery, Travel Noire shines a light on countries that champion religious diversity, understanding that the quest spans far beyond geographical borders. While many of these havens of pluralism can be found across East Asia, you can also uncover a few sanctuaries where the freedom to embrace any faith remains steadfast and unwavering.

Singapore, often called the Lion City, epitomizes a remarkable melting pot where religious diversity thrives. Regardless of their faith, Singaporeans come together to celebrate festivals with grandeur. In Singapore, there’s no state-imposed religion that citizens must adhere to. Here, the people are free to choose and follow the faith that resonates with them. This unique aspect sets Singapore apart from other nations, as it truly upholds the principle of religious freedom. The religious landscape in Singapore is, in essence, a beautiful mosaic of various communities coexisting harmoniously.

Buddhism is the most prevalent religion in Singapore, embraced by 33.3% of the population. Singapore is a diverse tapestry of faith, with 10 distinct religions finding their home within its borders. Alongside Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity hold primary positions in the religious landscape. Beyond these, there are minority religions like Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Sikhism, Jainism, and more.

Christianity is predominant in Suriname, comprising 48.4% of the total population. The country’s Christian landscape includes denominations like the Anglican Church, Catholicism, and various Protestant groups. Although the Catholic missions initially appeared in 1683, Christianity’s substantial growth occurred after Suriname came under Dutch rule in 1816. The faith found acceptance among indigenous people and West African slaves, forming a significant portion of Suriname’s Christian community.

Hinduism is the second-largest religion in Suriname, with the country having the third-highest proportion of Hindus in the Western Hemisphere. These Hindus, primarily descendants of laborers from India, arrived as indentured workers on Dutch plantations. The Dutch’s more tolerant policies allowed them to practice their faith freely in Suriname . After the nation’s independence, many Hindus settled in the northern coastal regions, where they now constitute the religious majority.

Suriname also has a significant Islamic community, mainly tracing its origins to South Asia and Indonesia. They were brought to the country as indentured laborers. Most are Sunnis, while smaller segments follow Sufism, Javanese Kejawèn, and other syncretic beliefs. Indigenous and Afro-descendant populations in Suriname maintain traditional religions, emphasizing the worship of nature and ancestors. Despite the religious diversity, Suriname promotes religious freedom and tolerance, allowing its citizens to practice their chosen faith. While the country’s political parties often have strong ethnic connections to particular religions, they do not enforce any religious mandates on their members or leaders.

China is a religiously diverse nation, with various faiths practiced throughout the country. The Chinese people adhere to Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Catholicism, Protestantism, and Confucianism, all of which are constitutionally protected. A dedicated body within the State Council is responsible for supporting these different religious groups in China.

Buddhism in China, which came from India via the Silk Road around the 2nd century BC, remains one of the most widespread religions. It is practiced in regions like Tibet, Inner Mongolia, and other parts of the country. China has approximately 9,500 Buddhist temples and monasteries, some with a history stretching back over two millennia.

Ivory Coast

In Ivory Coast, local religions are the most commonly practiced in the country, often blending elements of Christianity or Islam. In the 1980s, government estimates indicated that around a quarter of the population identified as Muslim, and about an eighth as Christian, predominantly Roman Catholic. The practice of Islam and Christianity in Ivory Coast takes various forms, adapting to the diverse social and spiritual needs that arise in the nation.

Islam has had a presence in the country’s far north for centuries, transitioning from a global religion based on written scriptures to a symbol of identity and an alternative to European faiths. Christian missionaries arrived on the coast in the 17th century, but mass conversions didn’t occur until the 19th century. Christianity appealed to educated Africans and those seeking opportunities through interaction with Europeans.

Ivory Coast demonstrates a remarkable harmony between various religious communities, as no single dominant faith exists. Individual conversions are more common than widespread religious shifts, and it’s not unusual for Muslim and Christian family members to coexist. Tolerance and coexistence are central elements of Ivory Coast’s religious landscape, reinforced by government policies that promote the construction of mosques and churches and encourage collaboration among different religious communities.

South Korea

In South Korea, religious affiliations present a diverse and multifaceted landscape. Approximately half of the population identifies with no particular religion, leaving a tapestry of faiths to coexist within the country. Among the traditional religions, Shamanism, Confucianism, and Buddhism hold the oldest roots in Korean culture, influencing religious beliefs and shaping societal norms and values. Buddhism, which arrived in Korea from China in the 4th century, is characterized by numerous temples across the nation. At the same time, Confucianism played a pivotal role during the Joseon dynasty, emphasizing ethics, morality, and ancestral worship. Since ancient times, Shamanism has remained influential in Korea, offering spiritual guidance and rituals, even coexisting with other major religions introduced to the country.

The introduction of Christianity, particularly Protestantism, gained prominence in South Korea after the Korean War and the arrival of American missionaries. These missionaries brought religious teachings and established schools and hospitals, ingraining Christianity in education and healthcare. This development led to Christianity becoming the largest religion in the country, with numerous followers primarily belonging to Protestant denominations. Nationalism played a role in this shift, with Korean Christians resisting Japanese rule during a challenging period.

South Korea also hosts various other religions, including Islam, Won Buddhism, Cheondogyo, and Daejonggyo, which collectively contribute to the rich tapestry of faith influencing daily life and traditions in the country. While Buddhism, Confucianism, and Christianity are technically present in North Korea, government restrictions severely limit religious activities, treating temples as cultural relics and focusing religious education on foreign trade.

Visa-free entry, Blackpink’s Lisa draw Chinese travellers to Thailand in droves

Thailand is now the top destination for Chinese travellers, ahead of Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Malaysia

Vincent Vichit-Vadakan

[BANGKOK] Like many countries in the region and beyond, Thailand has been going all out to woo Chinese tourists in the post-pandemic era, with the authorities rolling out incentives such as visa-free travel and beefing up the number of direct flights.

The number of arrivals from China is still down from 2019, the year before Covid-19 crippled the global economy, although there are signs that things are improving.

Of the 39.8 million international arrivals in Thailand in 2019, the Chinese accounted for over 11 million.

In 2023, when travel resumed with borders largely reopened, the Chinese market accounted for just 3.5 million.

Just by absolute numbers, China is Thailand’s largest source market when it comes to cross-border travellers. This is followed by Malaysia, India, South Korea and Russia.

Observers said one reason for the low numbers in 2023 was the lack of available flights to and from Thailand, with many airlines reluctant to commit greater resources until they were confident they could fill the planes.

Business insights centering on South-east Asia's fast-growing economies.

Chattan Kunjara Na Ayudhya, the deputy governor for international marketing (Asia and South Pacific) at the Tourism Authority of Thailand, pointed out that capacity is no longer an issue these days, with nearly 35,000 flights and some 6.5 million seats available in the current summer season.

He said this at the China-Thailand Cultural Tourism Industry Summit, organised by the Macau-based Global Tourism Economy Research Centre last week.

Kunjara noted that direct flights to Thailand are available not just from traditional first-tier hubs such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, but now include second and third-tier cities as well.

Many direct connections are available to Bangkok’s two airports, as well as other popular destinations such as Chiang Mai, Phuket and Koh Samui, he said.

Edison Chen, the vice-president for destination marketing and strategy alliances at online travel agency Trip.com, said that Thailand is currently China’s top outbound destination, ahead of Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Malaysia.

“The younger generation is attracted by a lot of entertainment experiences (in Thailand),” he said. “We also heavily promote concerts in Bangkok (with packages that) include hotels and other services.”

In his speech, Kunjara said the Thai government has been leveraging “soft power” in areas such as travel, sports and film to promote Thailand as an ideal destination for Chinese travellers.

When Thai music superstar Lisa – who is a member of K-pop group Blackpink – recently released her new single called Rockstar , he shared that there was a noticeable uptick in visits to Yaowarat, Bangkok’s Chinatown, where the video was shot.

Chen from Trip.com said that Thailand needs to continue its visa-free entry policy in order to attract more tourists to the kingdom.

Since Jun 1 this year, the number of countries eligible for visa-free entry to Thailand increased from 57 to 93. The revised scheme allows visitors to stay in Thailand for up to 60 days, from the previous 30-day limit.

Such schemes are usually reciprocated too. Earlier this year when China granted visa-free travel to Thai citizens, Chen noted that Trip.com saw an eightfold increase in flight searches to China.

Thailand’s ease of going cashless

Apart from visa-free travel, more Chinese travellers these days want to go to destinations where they can use their preferred mobile payment platforms instead of cash.

Speaking at the event, Scarlett Xi, the head of business of Ant International, said that Chinese travellers can use Alipay at more than 500,000 businesses in Thailand, inclduing the BTS and MRT mass transit systems.

Thanks to an ongoing partnership with Alipay, Thai users of the True Money e-wallet, can use this app in China.

“(Cashless solutions) make it easier for travellers to connect with local businesses,” she said.

Another speaker, Xu Xiaoliang, the executive director and co-chief executive of Fosun International and the chairman of Fosun Tourism Group, owner of the Club Med resort brand, sees the vast potential that Thailand offers for Chinese investors.

Club Med Phuket, the company’s sole property in Thailand that opened in 1985, generates about 25 million euros (S$36.5 million) in revenue annually, he said.

“We are negotiating with (the property arm of Thai conglomerate) Central Group to have more Club Meds in Thailand,” he said.
