1. Brihadishvara Temple or Rajarajesvaram or Peruvudaiyar Kovil

Brihadishvara Temple is amongst the foremost religious sites in Thanjavur, known for its exemplary Dravidian architecture. The Brihadishvara, Gangaikonda, and Airavatesvara temples are together called the Great Living Chola Temples and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also called the Dhakshina Meru (Meru of the south), this temple was built by Raja Raja Chola I by 1010 AD. Brihadishvarain Tamil means the ‘Big Lord’, and this temple is often also called the ‘Big Temple’. Brihadishvara incorporates the Hindu traditions of Shaivism, Vaishnavism, and Shaktism. One of the largest South Indian temples, the complex has five sections – the sanctum and Vimana (tower), the Nandi hall, the assembly hall (mukhamandapam), the gathering hall (mahamandapam), and the prakara (pavilion). The Shiva lingam in the sanctum sanctorum is one of India’s largest such monolithic sculptures. The presiding deity is worshipped as Karuvarai, meaning ‘womb chamber’. Its 16-storeyed granite vimana is a landmark for the city, and one of the largest vimana in South India. Some significant and beautiful shrines are of Parvati, Murugan, Nandi, Ganesh, Dakshinamurti, Subrahmanyar, Sabhapati, Varahi, and Chandeshvara. The temple is also noted for being the site where the brass Nataraja idol was first commissioned in the 11 th century. The temple walls, floors, and ceilings are adorned with magnificent sculptures, ornate inspirations, and striking murals.

Timings: 6 am to 12:30pm, 4 pm to 8:30pm

2. Brihadisvara Temple, Gangaikonda Cholapuram

This grand temple was built under Rajendra Chola I in 1035 AD as part of his new capital at Gangaikonda. The Chola king instructed the defeated kings to send pots filled with water from river Ganga, which was poured into Cholagangam, the temple’s Kunda (water tank). The name Gangaikonda is thus made of Ganga and kunda. This temple shares the same design and name as the older Brihadeeswarar temple of Thanjavur, but it is smaller in size and more refined. Both the Brihadeeswarar temples are the largest Shiva temples of South India. This Dravidian style temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Surrounded by walls and a cascading garden, a massive Nandi bull sits outside facing the main temple sanctum. The sanctum houses the presiding deity, Brihadeeswarar in Shiva lingam form. The temple has five shrines, and the navagrahas (nine planets) are carved out of a single stone. The vimana is deliberately kept shorter than the older Brihadeeswarar temple – as a mark of respect to his father’s work. The sri-vimanais nine-storied features symmetrical artwork, which is repeated in all the levels. The shrinking pattern of the artwork is rhythmic but not linear, lending the vimanaan unusual parabolic form. The neck protrudes in four cardinal directions, capped with kirtimukhas (face), and Nandi bulls seated on each corner. Next, a kalasa (cupola) sits on an open lotus, and above the kalasa, another lotus bud opens into the sky.

Timings: 8 am to 9 pm

3. Airavateswara Temple

Airavateswara Temple

This 12 th century temple was built by Rajaraja Chola II. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Airavateswara is smaller but more exquisite amongst the three Great Living Chola temples. Dedicated to Shiva, the temple also features traditions of Vaishnavism and Shaktism. At some point this temple was destroyed. Its original inner courtyard survives today, along with the Nandi mandapa and stambha (pillar) standing tall outside it. The fine Dravidian architecture exhibited at Airavateswara is called Karakkoil – a style inspired by temple chariots used during festival processions. Morning and evening sun dials form the chariot wheels. The reliefs along with the main temple bear carvings that depict stories of the 63 Bhakti saints. Some stunning sculptures include those of the river goddesses, and the 108 Devara Othuvars- musicians who sang at the royal court. The temple is named after Airavata, Lord Indra’s elephant. As per legend, Airavata’s clean, white skin was restored after it bathed in the temple tank. This legend is even carved on a stone in sanctum. The temple features unusual steps, the Bali Pitham, with intricate carvings and baluster which produce musical notes when waked upon, and are thus called ‘singing steps’.

Timings: 6 am to 12 pm, 4 pm to 9 pm

4. Ramaswamy Temple

Ramaswamy Temple

This 16 th century temple dedicated to Lord Rama was built by Nayakkar kings. This thanjavur temple features a characteristic Nayak style of temple architecture. A three-tiered gopuram is enclosed within walls. Carved out of a single stone, each of the 64 exquisite pillars depict various scenes from the epic Ramayana. Rama is seated with his consort Sita in the sanctum sanctorum. Standing alongside are his brothers – Lakshmana, Bharatha, and Chatruguna, while Hanuman is worshipping. The outer precincts are striking for the Chitra Ramayana – a pictorial depiction of Ramayana. This prominent temple of Kumbakonam also celebrates the prestigious Mahamaham festival.

5. Kampaheswarar Temple

Kampaheswarar temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva who rid a king from quaking (kampa). The vimana of this temple is very high – uncharacteristic of its Dravidian architectural style. Inscriptions on the temple wall suggest that it was built by a 12 th century Chola king. A Shiva lingam is the presiding deity of the temple. The temple also houses a shrine of Lord Sarabeswarar, a half-lion half-beast deity. His four-armed and three-legged sculpture is shown with Narasimha struggling under his feet. One of the earliest representations of the mythical creature of Yali in Chola art is found at this temple.

Timings: 6 am to 11 am, 5 pm to 8 pm

6. Swetha Vinayagar Temple or Vellai Vinayakar Koil

One of the Saptha Vigraha Moorthi (seven prime consorts) in all Shiva temples is located at the Swetha Vinayagar temple as Vinayagar, a form of Lord Ganesha. Built under the Chola dynasty, the temple is renowned for its white coloured Ganesh shrine made of sea foam.  A stone window pane with fine latticework, palahani, is also housed in the temple. Kapardiswarar, a form of Lord Shiva and his consort Brihannayaki, are the presiding deities. The temple features an image of sage Herandar, who is credited for bringing the river Cauveri to Thiruvalanchuzhi. The presence of Buddhist images in the temple indicates an influence of Buddhism.

Timings: 6 am to 12 pm, 4 pm to 8 pm

7. Swamimalai Swaminathaswamy Temple

Swamimalai temple is believed to have existed since the 2 nd century BC. The temple is an arupadaiveedu, one of the six holy shrines of Lord Murugan. As per legend, Murugan praised the meaning of Pranava Mantra (Aum) to his father Lord Shiva at this site, and thus earned the name Swaminathaswamy. Adorned with a diamond lance and golden crowns and armours, the shrine of Murugan is located atop a hillock, while the shrine of his parents, Shiva and Parvati, are located downhill. The beautiful Thanjavur temple is only one of the two places which maintain the iconography of exhibiting elephant as the original mount of Murugan.

Timings: 6 am to 12 pm, 4 pm to 10 pm

8. Aiyarappar Temple

Aiyarappar temple is considered a kailasam – one of the six temples on the banks of river Cauvery which are equally revered as the Kashi Vishwanath temple. It is thus referred to as Dakshina Kailasam – Shiva’s southern abode. The one-roomed home of music composer Thyagaraja situated next to the temple, and his shrine on the river banks are major tourist attractions. Hymns of Thevaram are incarnated in the temple. Aiyarappar is considered the foremost amongst the seven Saptha Stanam temples, and it is also included as a Paadal Petra Sthalam. The presiding deity is named after the five rivers of Tiruvaiyaru. The temple complex contains five water bodies and a Homa Kund, started by sage Adi Sankara.

Timings: 6 am to 11 pm, 4 pm to 8:30 pm

9. Thyagaraja Temple

This 9th century temple is often credited as one of the largest temples in India . A Shiva lingam is worshiped in the form of Moolanathar, and his consort Parvati as Kondi. The presiding deity is the sacred 7th century Saiva text Tevaram – recognized as a Paadal Petra Sthalam. Built in Dravidian architectural style, the temple has innumerable shrines and halls. The main shrines are of Vanmikinathar (Shiva) and Thyagaraja. The temple was an important center for Jainism and the Golaki matha during the 13 th and 14 th century. It owns the largest chariot in Tamil Nadu and is known for ajapathanam – a dance by the deity performed without music. Some unique features of this temple are, a standing Nandi bull facing the presiding deity, the gigantic Kamalalayam tank, and sundials to observe stars. The complex also features nine planetary deities as navagrahas, and pathiri (trumpet flower) as the temple tree.

Timings: 5 am to 12 pm, 4 pm to 9 pm

10. Chakrapani Temple

Chakrapani Temple

This temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in the form of Chakrapani, who symbolizes the chakra – the discus, most powerful weapon of Vishnu. The shrines are enclosed within granite walls, and a five-tiered gopuram is supported by exquisite pillars. The presiding deity sits on an elevated structure in the sanctum sanctorum. The eight-armed Chakrapani holds a weapon in each hand, and sports a third eye on his forehead. A five-faced (panchamukha) Hanuman is featured in the outer precincts. Parallel to the shrine, is the famous Chakra Padithurai ghat. The offerings to the deity (neivethanam) are consonant with the amount of smoke exuded by the burning corpses at the ghat, symbolizing the chakra (cycle) of life and death. Another peculiarity is the practice of vilvaarchana, a ritual generally performed in Shiva temples. This temple is the venue for Mahamaham festival which is celebrated every 12 years in Kumbakonam.

Timings: 7 am to 12 pm, 4 pm to 8 pm

11. Neelamega Perumal or Thanjai Mamani Temple

Thanjai Mamani Koil or Neelamega Perumal refers to a group of three temples on the banks of river Vennaaru. The temple is dedicated to Vishnu, who is worshipped as Veera Narsimhar, the presiding deity. His idol is beautifully sculpted with his hand placed on an elephant. The site of temple is where saint Parasarar mediated upon Lord Vishnu. This temple is regarded a divyadesam – one amongst the 108 Vishnu temples revered by the 12alwars (poet saints). Unlike other divyadesams where only one shrine is mentioned, all the shrines of Neelamega Perumal are referred in all the paasurams (poems) written by the alwars. All of the Thirumangai Alvar, Nammalvar and Bhoothathalvar paasurams of Thanjai respectively refer to the three temples of Maamanikoil, Manikunram and Thanjiyali Nagar.

Timings: 7 am to 12 pm, 5 pm to 8:30 pm

Nearby Thanajavur lies the ‘temple town’ of Kumbakonam. Amongst the navgraha (nine planets) thanjavur temples, some famous ones are – the Alangudi temple for Jupiter, Kailasanthar for Moon, Saneeswaran for Saturn, Naganathaswamy for Ketu, Naganathar for Rahu, and Sukran for Venus. Thanjavur also features a few of the Paadal Petra Sthalams–275 Shiva temples revered by the Nayanars clan. The Thanjavur Art Gallery, Sangeet Mahal, Poondi Matha, Maratha Palace, Saraswathi Mahal Library, Sivaganga Par, and Schwartz Church are some popular attractions in Thanjavur.

Brihadeeswara Temple

Amid thousands of sacred hymns glow a world of enchanting beauty – one that tells many stories of dynasties, historic triumphs and timeless traditions. the brihadeeswara temple is a testimony to the dravidian architecture of the chola period..

One of the largest temples in India, the Brihadeeswara Temple also known as Peruvudaiyar Kovil is located in Thanjavur. Dedicate to Lord Shiva represented as a huge ‘Lingam’, the temple was built around 1010 AD by the Chola king Rajaraja Chola I. Considered as one of the three ‘Great Living Chola Temples’ along with the Gangaikondacholeeswaram Temple and Airavastesvara Temple, the complex is also listed as a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.  One of the main attractions of the temple is a big statue of Nandi, the sacred bull of Lord Shiva. 13 ft high and 16 ft wide, the statue is sculpted out of a single rock. Fortified walls rich in elaborate rock art works surround the temple and give a grand look to the entire complex. The main temple tower is 216 ft high and the tallest of its kind in the world. The complete structure of the temple is made out of granite. The main ‘Gopurams’ or gateways to the temple are splendid structures with detailed sculptures.  The temple’s inscriptions and frescoes narrate the tale of the rise and decline of the city’s fortunes. The Shiva lingam or the idol is covered by the tower and is built with stones that are bonded without the use of mortar. Yet another wonder can be seen above - the stone at the top which weighs nearly 80 tons.  The temple stands as a fitting example of the might and power of the Chola dynasty that once ruled over the region. It is believed that the construction of the massive temple complex took only 7 years for completion, which is a huge accomplishment considering the scale of the sculptures, art and the complex itself.

Brihadeeswarar Temple

The temple stands amidst fortified walls that were probably added in the 16th century. The vimanam (temple tower) is 216 ft (66 m) high and is the tallest in the world. The Kumbam (the apex or the bulbous structure on the top) of the temple is carved out of a single rock and weighs around 80 tons. There is a big statue of Nandi (sacred bull), carved out of a single rock measuring about 16 ft (4.9 m) long and 13 ft (4.0 m) high at the entrance. The entire temple structure is made out of granite, the nearest sources of which are about 60 km to the west of temple. The temple is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Tamil Nadu.

Temple Timeline

The much celebrated 'Ponnambalam' (temple with golden roof) at Thillai (Chidambaram) was just a few hours of journey away. Thiruvarur, the most important 'Sapta Vitanka Sthalam’, which had the patronage of the Cholas right from the days of Manuneedhi Cholan and Musukuntha Cholan, was also nearby. So were numerous temples referred to as 'paadal Petra Sthalangals' - temples where the Saivite saints Appar, Sundarar, Sambandhar and Manickavasagar had sung Thevaram hymns (religious hymns praising the deeds of Lord Shiva). Then, what made Rajaraja Cholan build a massive temple in his capital city?

Few centuries back, the Pallavas had given a new dimension to art and architecture. Under their patronage rose the majestic Rathas, Shore Temple and Yali Caves at Mamallapuram. Rajasimha Pallavan built two splendid temples in Kanchipuram 'Paramesvara Vinnagaram' and 'Kailasanathar Kovil'. The latter, dedicated to Lord Siva, held Rajaraja Cholan's attention. He called it 'kachchipettu Periya Thali' (The Big Temple of Kanchipuram). Rajaraja Cholan's dreams and aspirations were always huge. The visionary he was in all matters, there is no wonder that he envisaged a huge temple to celebrate the power of divinity.

Many a people, have wondered why he chose to build an imposing monument. Did he want to showcase the power and might of his empire by building something colossal? Did he want to stamp his authority and tell the world, 'Look what I have accomplished?' Did he want to get rid of sins wrought by years of warfare or get a magical cure to a disease of unknown origin, as some people claim? May be the reason was simple. He wanted to show the whole world the towering presence of God that is everlasting against human life that is highly evanescent.

History of Brihadeeswarar Temple

Arulmozhivarman, a Tamil emperor who was popular as Rajaraja Chola I laid out foundations of Brihadeeswarar Temple during 1002 CE. It was first among other great building projects by Tamil Chola. A symmetrical and axial geometry rules layout of this temple. Temples from same period and two following centuries are expressions of Tamils Chola power, artistic expertise and wealth. Emergence of these types of features, such as multifaceted columns along with projecting signals of square capitals signifies arrival of Chola style, which was new at that time. It is one architectural exemplar, which showcases true form of Dravida kind of architecture in temples and is a representative of ideology of Chola Empire and Southern India’s Tamil civilization. Brihadeeswarar Temple “testifies to Chola’s brilliant achievements in architecture, painting, bronze casting and sculpture.”

It is said that after seeing Pallava Rajasimha Temples in Kanchipuram, Emperor Rajaraja Cholan had the dream of establishing such a huge temple for Lord Shiva. Brihadeeswarar Temple is first among all buildings, which make use of granite fully and it finished within five years from 1004 AD to 1009 AD. The greatest of Chola emperors Rajaraja-I (985 A.D - 1012 A.D) the son of Sundara Chola (Parantaka-II) and Vanavan mahadevi built this magnificent temple named Brihadisvaram at Thanjavur - the capital of Chola dynasty. From the Epigraphical evidence it is known about Rajaraja-I started building this temple on his 19th year and completed on 275th day of his 25th year. It took just 6 years to complete this work on 1010 A.D.

On the 275th day of his 25th year as king (1010 CE) Raja Raja Chola handed over a gold-plated Kalasam (copper pot or finial) to crown the vimana (dome) as the final consecration of the temple. Brihadeeswarar Temple was the nerve center of the Chola Empire and attracted musicians, scholars, craftsman and merchants. It particularly served as a platform for dancers who excelled in the traditional dance form of Sadir, which is now known as Bharatha Natyam. The Chola reign declined and they were ousted by the Pandyas who were in turn thrown over by the Vijayanagara Empire. In 1535, the Vijayanagara king installed a Nayak king and the clan, called Tanjore Nayaks, reigned till the mid-17th century. In 1674, the Marathas conquered Tanjore. Later, like the rest of the country, Thanjavur too fell into British hands. The inscriptions and frescoes on the walls of Brihadeeswarar Temple record the rise and fall of the city's fortunes. Shiva’s representation is as a gigantic stone lingam. This is covered by a vimanam that extends to 216 feet. It is built with stones that are bonded and notched without any mortar. The topmost stone, an engineering marvel, weighs about eighty tons.

Rajaraja-I named this temple as Rajarajesvaram and the deity Shiva in Linga form as Peruvudaiyar, the temple is also known in the deity's name as Peruvudaiyarkovil (in Tamil language). In later period Maratta and Nayaks rulers constructed various shrines and gopurams of the temple. In later period when the Sanskrit language was more popular during the Maratha rule the temple was named in Sanskrit as Brihadisvaram and the deity as Brihadisvara. Now-a-days it is called as Thanjai Periyakovil (Tanjore Big temple). The Brihadisvara Temple was completed in around 1010 in the southeastern part of the new capital Thanjavur constructed in the basin of the Kaveri (Cauvery) River by the king of the Chola Dynasty, Rajaraja I (r. 985-1014). It has also been called Rajarajesvara Temple after the king’s name. It is one of the two greatest temples from the age of the Chola Dynasty together with the Rajendra-Cholisvara Temple built in the next new capital, Gangaikondacholapuram, which was constructed by his successor Rajendra I. Those constructions were prodigious national projects showing the Chola Empire’s hegemony in south India. It is said that the Brihadisvara Temple was erected in only seven years. Its precincts are surrounded with cloisters covering an area of 120m by 240m and are also surrounded outside with heavy brick walls for an area of 350m square including a large tank (reservoir). There is a Nandi Shrine, two continuous extensive Mandapas (worship rooms), an Antarala (antechamber), and a Vimana with a high tower, all in line on the east-west axis. On the same axis stand Gopurams (temple gateways) of the early phase at the eastern center of the cloister and the brick wall. They are the sole entrance spots to the temple precincts.

Though they are embellished with sculptures, they look much lower than later Gopurams of huge temples in south India, as the height of the Vimana is great in contrast. The second Gopura on the line of the cloisters is 24m in both width and height, lower than the first Gopura, but its sculptures are larger, with a pair of Dvarapalas (guardian figures) on both sides of the doorway. In the cloisters surrounding the precincts is a line of Lingas (phalluses), symbol of Shiva, and wall paintings from the Nayaka period on the rear walls delight the eye of pilgrims. This Brihadisvara Temple made of granite and brick is the greatest work of the Dravidian (northern) style in its grand scale and high degree of perfection, alongside of the great temple in Gangaikondacholapuram. The development of stone temples in the southern Indian style, having started at the small temples at Mahabalipuram, reached their summit here. It became the model of the temples to be built in south India and Southeast Asia in the period of the Chola Dynasty. However, after the end of the Chola Dynasty in the 13th century, temple style would change dramatically. Huge Vimanas would not be built anymore, rather temple precincts would be expanded, surrounding the temple in fold upon fold, and constructing only Gopurams in a colossal scale on the four sides. The outer Gopurams would be erected higher, and would eventually attain more than 60m. The relationship of height between the main shrine and its gates would be completely reversed. From this point too, the Brihadisvara Temple in Thanjavur is the best representative of orthodox south Indian temple architecture.

A wall of carved figures leads to an opening that reveals a temple in the distance

Searching for traces of the ancient Chola dynasty

One of the world’s most remarkable—and little known—empires comes to life in south India with new heritage tours.

The only thing left of the grand city of Gangaikondacholapuram in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu is a temple amidst paddy fields. But for a time, it was an epicenter of medieval Southeast Asia and the capital of one of the oldest and longest ruling dynasties in the world.

For nearly 1500 years, the Chola dynasty (300 B.C.–A.D. 1279) asserted its power—influencing religion, culture, and architecture—via a sophisticated maritime trade system that extended from India throughout Southeast Asia and even to China.

Yet, despite the kingdom’s extensive trade route system and widespread power, the Cholas remained shrouded in mystery for centuries, while later invaders like the Mughals and British gained prominence in India’s larger academic and cultural history.

Now, technology-backed excavations, custom Chola heritage tours, and a record-breaking Indian film have rekindled interest in the Cholas, creating opportunities for travelers to help solve one of history’s greatest mysteries: What happened to the empire?

The golden age

The Cholas were one of the three most powerful Tamil kingdoms in medieval southern India. At the empire’s zenith, Chola kings invested in art, literature, education, and architecture. They ambitiously built massive stone temples—which served as cultural and social hubs—adorned with elaborate sculptures and detailed paintings, and they designed man-made lakes to alleviate droughts and provide a supply of safe drinking water.

Ornate pointed structure covered in hundreds of small statues

( This little-known Native American society was once as powerful as the Aztecs and Incas .)

But little is left of their capital city, Gangaikondacholapuram (meaning the City of the Chola who conquered Ganga). The only visible proof of its legacy are Gangaikondacholisvaram (also known as Brihadisvara Temple), a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the three-mile-long Cholagangam (now Ponneri) Lake.

In 2021, archaeologists uncovered the first major physical evidence of a grand palace in the ancient capital city, says K. Sridharan, an archaeologist who was part of the first excavation team in the 1980s.

“There are mentions of Gangaikondacholapuram only in copper plates, a few Tamil literary works, and epigraphs on the walls of the temples built by the Cholas, including those at Gangaikondacholisvaram,” says Sridharan. He says the details that could provide clues about the city layout and the lives led by its inhabitants remain elusive. “Any shred of physical evidence found is exciting.”

Historians are still unraveling why the city and its people disappeared in the 13th century, but many believe that an invasion led by a rival kingdom in the latter half of the century may have played a part.

“Jatavarman Sundara Pandya of the Pandya dynasty had invaded places nearby Gangaikondacholapuram. He must have razed the city to the ground, sparing just the temple,” says Chitra Madhavan, an author and a historian. She adds that Hindu kings often spared religious sites during war. “As the later Cholas shifted their capital back to Thanjavur, people must have migrated to other places for better prospects,” she says.

Where to discover more Chola history

Although little remains of the Cholas’ capital city, travelers can still learn about the dynasty throughout Tamil Nadu. Several sites highlight the Cholas’ impact on bronze casting, architecture, and music. New hertiage trails have sprouted up thanks to the national popularity of the film Ponniyin Selvan-1,   says historian Jayakumar Baradwaj, who specializes in Chola heritage tours .

Multi-armed human like figure holds various objects

“Gangaikondacholapuram may be a small village today, but it is from here that the Cholas had once ruled almost the whole of southeast Asia,” he says.

The movie also inspired the new “Ponniyin Selvan” trail . The three-day tour developed by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation takes visitors from Chennai, Tamil Nadu’s capital, to several places significant to Chola history, including Brihadisvara Temple in Thanjavur and Veeranam Lake .

For travelers looking to pave their own way, head an hour southwest of Gangaikondacholapuram to the remote village of Swamimalai, where millennium-old Chola bronze foundries offer a peek into the art of making utsava murtis , portable idols, in bronze using the lost-wax process , a technique perfected and popularized by the Chola.

( See 23 photos of India’s stunning cultural heritage .)

“You are bound to find at least a piece or two of these Chola bronzes in prominent museums of the world like New York City ’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, London ,” says S. Vijay Kumar, who leads a team of online sleuths working to recover stolen artifacts for the India Pride Project .

Kudavayil Balasubramanian, former curator at the Saraswati Mahal Library —one of the oldest libraries in Asia, located inside the Thanjavur Maratha Palace —adds that a substantial collection of bronze and stone Chola sculptures from the 9th through 13th centuries can be found in the palace’s art gallery .

From elaborate murals depicting Hindu epics and delicately carved granite sculptures to soaring towers and spires (some still the tallest in India to date), the 11th- and 12th-century temples collectively known as the “Great Living Chola Temples” offer a unique perspective on how Chola art and architecture evolved over the centuries.

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987, the massive Brihadishvara Temple in Thanjavur, Airavatesvara Temple in Dharasuram, and Gangaikondacholisvaram in Gangaikondacholapuram remain active places of worship, using the same rituals established and practiced over a thousand years ago.

Steps from Brihadishvara Temple in Thanjavur, travelers can tour the workshop where India’s national musical instrument, the Saraswati veena , is made. Named after the Hindu goddess of learning, art, and wisdom, the Saraswati veena is a descendant of the ancient yazh , a harp-like stringed instrument created during the Chola dynasty.

These experiences are just the tip of the iceberg, says Vijay Kumar.

“The naval prowess of the Cholas has been a surprisingly neglected area of study, when the truth is that South Indians, especially the Tamils, have been seafaring pioneers for much longer,” he says. “Excavations in Malaysia, Indonesia, and even Myanmar may throw many more surprises our way.”
