Our tour guide Thia made this trip! It was a great day seeing places we wouldn't have otherwise known about. The stops were frequent so you didn't get bored or motion sick Lots of snacks and beverages along the way. My only negative was the lunch at the volcano rim restaurant. The mahi mahi was overcooked and no flavor. Portions were small with no explanation of what we were served. They were also very prepared for all the weather challenges with coats and umbrellas.

AMAZING TOUR! The tour guide was on-time at our pick-up location. She greeted with us with a huge welcome and smile and captured info regarding our names and where we're from, and made mention of it throughout the day. She provided an agenda and gathered everyone's input to ensure it would meet and exceed our expectations. She was a very skilled driver and knowledgeable about all surroundings as she shared historical information, landmarks, and key things to do as we made our journey to sights built into the tour. We covered over 250 miles across the day and had ample time to see everything listed on this tour. It was very well done and orchestrated. We'd do it again. We can't say enough great things about our day and Debra, our tour guide. This excursion is highly recommended.

The absolutely the ultimate worse vacation I have ever been on...even for Hawaii! We got rooms that we could not see the beach which we requested, we asked for kingsize beds and double beds, NO communications from the the Hawaii Tours, we were in 6 airports in 10 days. Was not relaxing at all!! I DONOT Recommend. Everything was out dated... The last Hotel was Marriott King they build in 1980. They have a good presentation but zero applications when its time Again donot recommend!!! Gregory an Remona Chapman!

I took the "Big Island Highlights Day" tour and had a good time. Our guide did good job of providing information for the duration of the trip. The van was comfortable and but completely full with a group of 8. Even though it made for a long day it was enjoyable and I'd recommend taking it at the beginning of your trip here to get an idea of places to visit during your stay as I had visited some of the same places already in the beginning of our trip. The food provided for lunch was not great. I got the fish (very bland) and my husband got the pork (way too salty) so I wouldn't get your hopes up on the food for the tour.

Photo of Nancy R.

Location: Big Island (Hawai'i) Price: very reasonable for a 12-hr tour Service: impeccable Comfort: Very high level comfort - the van is air-conditioned, seating is very comfortable, and there is plenty of room for your personal items as well as room to purchase from vendors throughout the day. Thank you Uncle Jim!!! On Friday, October 6th we took the "Circle" tour of the entire island. The experience was remarkable and enhanced our entire vacation. We were only on the island for 3 days so this was the ideal way to see the most locations and learn the most about the history and culture for us. Our guide picked us up at our hotel along with other passengers in the area and we headed to all of the locations promised in the itinerary as well as some hand-picked spots along the way. Jim has an incredible personality - warm and inviting, and engaged the entire group. His knowledge of the island and its history was invaluable and fascinating. More than a tour guide pointing out locations, he taught us the origins of the native Hawaiians to the journey prior to becoming a state to present - he educated us on the culture and made us fall in love with this wonderful island and its native people as well as those who have chosen to make Hawaii their home. I particularly appreciated his preparation - able to shift the conversation and tour based on the group's questions and interest. This is truly a remarkable skill and we were in the best hands. A focus on small, locally-owned businesses was a treat - I purchased most of my souvenirs home from these vendors rather than from the plentiful ABC stores. Thank you for this opportunity. It's difficult to choose a highlight - nearly 2 weeks later I am still dreaming of being escorted around this beautiful island and learning about the history and the most current events of the active volcanoes. The main draw for me to visit Hawai'i was the Volcanoes National Park - which was absolutely a highlight to my entire trip; and Jim was extremely knowledgeable about the geology and really made this a great experience. I cannot recommend this tour more highly. Our tour educated us to appreciate the remainder of our visit, specifically the luau we had scheduled for our next island. Thanks to our history lesson, we understood the story more fully so it was even more entertaining. This was a phenomenal experience!

Mic drop. This 11-hour tour extravaganza hit every part of the Big Island--including four distinctly different weather climates. (I kid you not.) While driving 300 miles around the island on your own might be ideal for some people, I'd rather sit back and enjoy the ride--while being informed and catered to along the way. From hitting up a pristine coffee plantation to seeing multiple waterfalls, our quippy, clever guide John Gary really went above and beyond all day for his riders. Breakfast and lunch were both included, as was a wine tasting. Highlights included seeing Volcanoes National Park and traipsing through a hauntingly alluring 5,000-year-old lava tube. There was also a stop at Punaluu Bakeshop, the southernmost bakery in the USA where you're encouraged to carbo-load on their famous malasades. Also, you name it, John had it handy--lavender hot towels, lavender cold towels, umbrellas, flashlights, rain slickers, sunscreen, bug spray, and plenty of snacks. If six stars were an option, I would gladly give that. I cannot say enough good things about the personalized service and attention-to-detail from pick-up to drop-off. Gold star, John!

Aloha, Mac! Your review made it to the company-wide acknowledgment website for multiple reasons. The stops are amazing and anyone could choose to go on their own but we like to spoil our guests. How wonderful that you gave up full control to just simply enjoy the experience. The plethora of extra-attention items is something we know helps us stand out and we love to hear that it made an impact on your experience. Lastly, we love John and it fills us with pride when guests gush about him. Mahalo for being a wonderful addition to the tour and for sharing your review with our future guests! Best wishes from your Kailani Ohana.

Whatever you do...DO NOT try to reschedule! You will LOOSE EVERY LAST PENNY that you paid! Our Uber driver canceled at the last minute...we sent them SEVERAL authentic verifications. I had been on this tour before and brought a friend along to share...paid over $900! We were told 'too bad..no rescheduling...no refund'. TERRIBLE customer service. BEWARE!

One of THE BEST yours! Sooooooo informative with attention to detail.:-) Thanks to Debra W.! The BEST tour guide who I've had the pleasure of meeting in quite a while. She explained about the volcanos, the beautiful culture of the Hawaiians, the Hawaiian coffee, etc. Pleasant conversationalist as well! AND an EXCELLENT driver as well! Go o this tour....worth EVERY penny!

We did the Big Island Highlights Day Tour which was an 11 hour tour that went all around the island, starting in Kona, going through the southern part of the island to Hilo and then back to the west side of the island. Our stops included: - Kona Coffee Farm (where we had breakfast - yogurt parfait, mango bread and fruit salad) - Punalu'u Bake Shop (for malasadas) - Punalu'u Black Sand Beach - Volcano Winery and Tea Farm (where we had boxed lunch - orzo salad, grilled chicken breast and roll) - Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - Kilauea Caldera Overlook - Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Visitor's Center - steam vents - Thurston Lava Tube - Rainbow Falls Our tour guide was Thia. Thia was an awesome tour guide and answered all of our questions patiently from a group of people ranging in age from 6-77. Thia was also a great driver, minimizing the twists and turns as much as she could to minimize motion sickness. The tour is a bit long, particularly for young kids, but the constant food and snacks help quite a bit. You definitely won't be hungry on this tour. Not only are they feeding you at almost every stop, but they also have snacks, water and drinks on the bus. My favorite stops were: - Punalu'u Black Sand Beach: Really cool black sand beach where we saw multiple turtles - Kilauea Caldera Overlook: We're lucky in that we were able to see lava bubbling up at the caldera which was cool. The tour company provided binoculars which were really helpful. - Rainbow Falls: We didn't have a chance to see a rainbow at Rainbow Falls because we were there too late in the day, but it's a cool spot and there are also some beautiful banyan trees off to the side that make for great climbing.

Aloha, Wendy! An amazing review from an amazing guest! Thia is so kind and caring. It is commonplace to hear accolades on her behalf. Mahalo for joining us, for sharing your experience (expertly), and for trusting us with your valuable time. Safe travels!

Frequently Asked Questions

The key difference is that the Volcano Explorer Tour is about 2 hours shorter and picks up all guests from one central location to maximize efficiency. It dedicates more time to exploring Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park and includes a stop at Rainbow Falls and Big Island Candies. The Big Island Highlights Tour offers a broader overview of the island with additional stops like a Kona coffee farm, Punalu’u Black Sand Beach and lunch at the iconic Rim restaurant at Volcano House.

Our tours are designed from the ground up for discerning travelers. From our exclusive partnerships with high-end resorts to our private tastings and experiences not open to the general public, you get unparalleled access. Forget being herded like cattle or looking over someone’s shoulder – with our upgraded Mercedes Sprinter fleet, oversized panoramic windows, luxurious leather captains chairs and warm/cold towel service – you’ll be given the white glove service from start to finish.

Our itineraries are designed to avoid peak times at busy areas. For example, at famous Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, we time our arrival after the large tour buses have departed to allow for a tranquil experience with the nesting honu (green sea turtles). We also have priority reservations at many of our stops to ensure an intimate and authentic experience.

While we make regular stops, preventing boredom is crucial, especially with our younger guests. That’s why our guides incorporate interactive storytelling, hands-on demonstrations like making seed leis from native plants, and activities tailored to each child’s interests. We also provide coloring books, games and other keepsakes to keep their hands and minds engaged between destinations. Our guides are also trained to modify the tour content to match appropriate age levels

We run tours rain or shine – though we’ll reschedule the tour in the event of unsafe or extreme weather. Hawaii’s microclimates mean the weather can vary across the island and we have options to adjust our itinerary to ensure you experience the best conditions while seeing our iconic sights.

Immersing you in Hawaii’s rich cultural heritage is our mission. Our local guides weave in ancient legends, historical narratives, and personal stories throughout the tour. You’ll participate in traditions like making plumeria leis, learn key Hawaiian phrases, and gain a deep appreciation for the island’s sacred sites. We go beyond just showing you the sights – we connect you to the heart and soul of Hawaii.

We limit our tours to a maximum of 12 guests per luxury Mercedes vehicle to ensure a personalized and intimate experience. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to interact with your guide, ask questions, and get to know your fellow travelers. For the ultimate in exclusivity, private tours are also available for your group alone.

While active lava flow isn’t guaranteed year-round, you’ll still witness the raw power and beauty of Hawaii’s volcanoes up close. Our expert guides prioritize your safety, using only approved trails and viewpoints. They monitor conditions in real-time and can adjust plans if needed. You’re in very capable hands to experience the wonder of standing on some of the youngest landscapes on earth!

All-inclusive means all-inclusive. All tasting fees, meals, beverages, park entries and transportation are included in one upfront price for a seamless, stress-free experience.

Tips are never required but are greatly appreciated by our hardworking guides. If you enjoy your tour experience, feel your guide provided exceptional service, and want to show your gratitude, tipping is a wonderful way to do so. While the amount is always at your discretion, a common range for full-day excursions is $20-$40 per guest.

For your safety and comfort, open alcohol containers are not allowed in our vehicles. However, wine/beer tastings are included at certain stops for those 21+ to enjoy responsibly. Non-alcoholic beverages are also available throughout the tour.

Our Mercedes vans have panoramic views that help even our most sensitive guests avoid severe motion sickness. Though we also offer amenities like ginger candies and provide frequent stops throughout the journey.

Our guides are local experts rigorously trained in service, safety and storytelling. We maintain a 5-star guest rating because of their passion and personalities. But you don’t need to take our word for it. Read more about our amazing guides from past guest reviews!

Definitely not! During your online booking, we’ll ask about any food allergies, restrictions or preferences, we’ll communicate in advance with our farm-to-table lunch providers as well as the establishments hosting our tastings. From vegetarian to gluten-free and beyond, we’ve got you covered with delicious kid-friendly options.

We welcome families on our tours! However, to ensure the safety and comfort of our youngest guests, children under 5 are only permitted on private tours. Hawaii State Law requires all children 3 years and younger to be in a proper safety seat, and children aged 4 to 7 who weigh between 40 and 80 pounds and are less than 57 inches tall must be in a booster seat. We have all child seat options available upon request at no additional charge. During the booking process, please notify us of your children’s ages and seat requirements so we can best accommodate your family’s needs.

This tour allows people to explore the island at their fitness and comfort level. It is our “Easy” tour. You will be given the opportunity to exit the vehicle to enjoy the lush and unique landscapes of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, and Rainbow Falls. All walks are optional and it is up to you how far you walk at these destinations. The Thurston Lava Tube is the most strenuous part of the tour with roughly 15 steps down, a twenty-minute or 1/3 mile hike through the tube, and roughly 20 steps up.

Though we have a compact collapsible wheelchair available for guests, our guides are not able to push/assist with wheelchair mobility. Our tours are active and require some physical exertion. While on tour guests may experience some or all of the following: a large step up into the van, tight aisles, steep hills in either direction, stairs, uneven surfaces, wet surfaces, and loose sand. If you have any questions or would like to know more details about the physical aspects of your specific tour, please contact Kailani Tours staff at 808-938-4057 or [email protected] .

Kailani Tours Hawaii will provide your meals, snack baskets, beverages, hiking gear, jackets, parkas, umbrellas, flashlights, other related gear for all weather conditions, and items to help with car sickness/nausea. Please come prepared with close-toed shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and a camera.

If you are not staying at a Resort or Hotel on our list of 40 pick-up locations on the West side of the Big Island of Hawaiʻi, then we have multiple centralized spots available with free and well-lit parking in the Kailua-Kona and Waikoloa areas. This is very important to have scheduled as early as possible.

A private tour allows you to go at your own pace, customize the itinerary, have more flexibility and receive upgraded services and exclusivity.

With Trip Protection, you can cancel for a full refund up to 1 hour before your tour’s scheduled departure – under any circumstances. Without trip protection, you may cancel or reschedule up to 48 hours before your tour’s scheduled departure with no fees or penalties.

We’re here to help! Simply call us at (808) 938 4057 or email [email protected] if you have any additional questions or concerns.
