The region of Tena is the entrance to the Amazon basin, located in the Eastern part of Ecuador “El Oriente”, the area a place of unparalleled biodiversity. It holds an astounding amount of wildlife and flora: home to 50% of Ecuador’s mammals, 5% of earth’s plant species and prolific birdlife. It is the most accessible part to reach the jungle, with more than 500 bird species, big cats, butterflies, monkeys, fish, snakes and insects.

The natural sanctuary of the lodge offers an undisturbed world where guests can escape from noise, pollution and stress imposed by larger cities. In addition, the lodge feels authentic, airy and comfortable with its high walls and ceilings. The architecture helps to keep the lodge and the rooms climatized without the need of air- conditioning. In total there are 19 private rooms of varying sleeping configurations and several public gathering spots, including the spacious dining room, an open-air bar and a pool. The open-air bar offers fresh squeezed juices, soft drinks, beers and cocktails, or a chilled glass of white wine. Enjoy a drink at night overlooking the river and the pool!

TENA JUNGLE TOUR 9 - Ecuador & Galapagos Tours

Day 1: Your trip starts at the Arajuno Bridge, about 45 minutes away from Tena. Your naturalist guide will give you information about the place, important recommendations and other tips to start a great experience in the tropical forest. A motorized canoe that goes upstream for about 20 minutes will take you to the lodge. During the boat trip you can enjoy the beauty of the Amazon rainforest traveling along the river. Once you arrive at the dock area of the lodge, the staff will welcome you and give you brief and general information about your accommodation and the activities during your stay. After a lunch served in the lodge and getting settled in your room, you can take part in a tubing activity. Before dinner you can join the optional night walk. A flashlight and camera are the most important tools on this night excursion, which allows guests to hear the nocturnal sounds and to look for fishing bats, owls, a variety of insects, tarantulas, toads and frogs, and possibly snakes. If the sky is clear, you might have the chance to do some stargazing.

Day 2: If the climate permits it, you will have an early morning activity today. Bird lovers can take a canoe ride for 15 minutes upstream to enjoy the parrot clay lick ( saladero ). Here you can appreciate a unique site where parrots and parakeets gather in order to obtain the minerals that will help them to digest the fruits or seeds they have consumed. Hundreds of parrots and parakeets will approach the treetops and later will come down to the clay bank to eat this soil rich in minerals. It is essential to have binoculars to enjoy it. Afterwards you will return to the lodge for breakfast. After a scrumptious breakfast you will head out for a hike through the primary and secondary rainforest. Your expert naturalist guide will teach you about the ecology and flora and fauna of the rainforest along the trail. You will observe a great variety of insects, a diversity of birds flying around you and with some luck reptiles or monkeys. This activity takes about 2 ½ -3hours. You will then return to the lodge for lunch and a siesta. In the afternoon it is time to enjoy a cultural activity. You will pay a visit to an Amazonian Kichwa community will where you will learn about their way of life and the interaction they have with the forest. This encounter is going to show you that part of the Amazonia that you do not find on the maps: The Amazon people. Part of the visit to the community involves the demonstration of the famous c hicha , a fermented yuca drink that has become part of their festivals and daily use. You will have the chance to help with the preparation of this beverage and also try some of the local cuisine. The visit ends with a traditional dance performed by the kids in this community and you also have some time to buy some handicrafts, made by the indigenous people. This little business is to support the indigenous people in their daily life. Afterwards you will return to the lodge where a delicious dinner will be served.

Day 3: After breakfast you will check out and take the motorized canoe ride for 20 minutes to return to the Arajuno Bridge.

In the 4 days 3 nights tour, a visit to Isla Anaconda and AmaZOOnico are scheduled for day 3. After a delicious breakfast buffet, you will take a 40 min canoe ride downriver to visit Isla Anaconda. Here you can observe the prehistoric bird hoatzin, woolly monkeys, squirrel monkeys, just to mention a few. You also visit a family in one of the indigenous communities to learn about their farming habits, medicinal plants, as well as the ancestral way of hunting with blowguns (cerbatana) and handmade traps in the forest. On this trip a box lunch will be provided. After lunch you will go to AmaZOOnico, which is sheltering a number of different jungle animals, some in danger of extinction. AmaZOOnico is not a zoo but a rescue center for animals of the Amazon in Ecuador. Here you can observe a wide variety of monkeys, macaws, ocelots, capybara, toucans, parrots and much more animals in their natural habitat at close range. After this visit you will return to the lodge for dinner.

However, visiting the Amazon can be notoriously an expensive adventure. Our ultimate guide to Tena Ecuador will help get you there. After living in Ecuador for years we can answer all your questions about how to best visit Tena , including things to do in Tena, the best Tena Amazon tours, and much more.

Tena Ecuador

Just a few hours east of Quito , Tena Ecuador is one of Ecuador’s major gateways to the Amazon Rainforest. Easily accessible by private transportation or by bus, Tena is a great destination for travelers looking to explore this incredible region of Ecuador

For many travelers, Tena will serve as a base for exploring the Amazon, though jungle tours start deeper into the Amazon, where the roads stop. Check out our Tena Ecuador map below to get an idea of exactly where Tena sits within the Ecuadorian Amazon and the Napo Province.

Tena, Ecuador is one of the best options for budget travel in the entire Amazon Rainforest . Tena is easily accessible from the rest of the country, the perfect jumping-off point for the rainforest, and has plenty of budget accommodation options on the edge of the Amazon.

Prices for Amazon tours and excursions are generally higher the deeper into the rainforest you travel – it’s more expensive here to build lodges, transport goods and people, etc. – so budget travel in the Amazon becomes impossible deep in the rainforest.

While there are experiences you can’t have on the edge of the Amazon in Tena that you will find deeper in the interior of the Amazon (seeing specific wildlife, especially), unless you’re an avid birdwatcher or wildlife enthusiast you probably won’t even tell the difference.

When visiting Tena, you’ll still be completely immersed in the jungle, see incredible wildlife, and learn so much about the incredible Amazon ecosystem.

For budget stays, base yourself at an inexpensive hostel or hotel in downtown Tena – like Hostal Zumag Sisa in central Tena or Hostal Pakay on the edge of Tena. For lodge experiences and more immersive jungle stays , check out some of Tena’s most well-loved lodges, like Kuyana Amazon Lodge or El Jardin Lodge & Spa .

Best Hotels & Hostels in Tena

Hostal zumag sisa ($), hostal pakay ($ – $$), kuyana amazon lodge ($$ – $$$), el jardin lodge & spa ($$ – $$$), tena ecuador elevation.

The elevation of Tena is 1,962 feet (598 meters). Since most visitors arrive in Tena from Quito, high up in the Andes at 9,350 feet (2,850 meters), you’ll absolutely feel the change in elevation when you arrive!

The drive is along a twisty road down from the mountains into the rainforest. It feels a bit precarious but is quite safe.

Tena Ecuador Weather

The temperature in Tena is generally in the mid-70s (23°C – 25°C) throughout the entire year. Given its rainforest location, it sprinkles or drizzles for at least a short time almost every day in Tena .

Expect an afternoon shower and overcast skies, but don’t expect torrential rain all day every day. While you’re in the rainforest here, don’t expect constant rain!

You’ll see that the lodges we recommend near Tena – Kuyana Amazon Lodge and El Jardin Lodge – are located outside of Tena, of course, though close enough to be quite convenient , even if you just have a short time to spend in Tena

Tours to Tena

Given the travel time to Tena from Quito (about 4.5 or 5 hours by bus), Tena isn’t really a viable day trip option. Most visitors will spend at least one night here , though you can best enjoy the area with at least two nights in Tena.

While Tena isn’t really a day trip destination, you’ll find many travelers that prefer to visit as part of a guided excursions. Tours from Quito to Tena are an exceedingly popular way to explore the Amazon rainforest on a tight itinerary , and with the ease of transportation and guides included.

Why are small-group excursions from Quito to Tena so popular? Because Tena is a destination that most travelers visit with the intention of exploring the Amazon Rainforest, which necessitates a local guide. Rather than booking something in Tena, it’s often easier and cheaper to book something in Quito that includes round-trip transportation to Tena as well.

This tour includes everything you could want to do in Tena – learn to make chocolate, embark on a jungle trek, and visit an indigenous village, plus birdwatching and wildlife spotting – and includes options for rafting. Accommodations are at the fantastic Suchipakari Amazon Lodge & Spa .

Things To Do in Tena

While there isn’t much to do in Tena proper, there’s plenty to see and do around Tena, meaning that one of the best things to do in Tena is leaving the city!

Just beyond the city is the lush jungle, making j ungle tours, kayaking excursions on the river, and white water rafting some of the best things to do in Tena and among the best things to do in Ecuador .

Of course, jungle tour excursions in Tena are the most popular and most requested activities in Tena Ecuador. There are plenty of options for day tours and overnight tours with a variety of companies.

While there are hikes that you can go on independently around Tena, you’ll truly need an organized excursion to have a meaningful jungle experience while in Tena. Tena tour guides who are knowledgeable about the area will take you to points of interest that you wouldn’t be able to access on your own.

I recommend spending at least a full day on a jungle tour excursion if you can fit it into your Ecuador itinerary . This is the highlight of coming to Tena, after all. You’ll see more flora and fauna, learn more about the ingenious communities around Tena, and have a more immersive experience than you would in anything less than a day.

Check out this full-day jungle tour from Tena and book in advance to secure your spot – it’s one of the best! This tour is a very complete tour of the most impressive places in the jungle around Tena, including awesome experiences like a visit to a local village, wildlife spotting, and much more that you won’t want to miss .

Alternatively, I recommend looking into the jungle tours offered by Hostal Pakay . On one trip to Tena Ecuador , we had a fabulous experience with Hostal Pakay , doing a full-day jungle trek that we organized for about 15 short-term volunteers visiting Ecuador from the United States. They did a great job accommodating such a large group.

Tena Ecuador is known for its whitewater rafting adventures and has some of the best rafting excursions in Ecuador. Adventurous travelers come from all over for rafting in Tena , so you know it’s good!

Local Tena tour companies offer a variety of whitewater rafting “routes” with different intensities and difficulty levels, so there is something for you no matter your comfort level or experience.

These are some of the most popular whitewater rafting experiences in Tena – definitely among the best things to do in Tena! – so check them out if you’re interested in jungle rafting!

  • Day Rafting Experience from Tena
  • Whitewater Rafting in the Amazon from Tena

These tours are offered by these two companies, which are the companies we recommend for rafting in Tena , from our experience and from glowing reviews from travelers we know:

Aqua Xtreme

Aqua Xtreme is one of the most well-loved tour companies in Tena, and they have excellent whitewater rafting tours at all levels of intensity. They also offer well-rated jungle tours, so if you’re interested in experiencing both, look into booking with them.

Raft Amazonia

Raft Amazonia is another well-respected tour company with a focus on whitewater rafting. Run by a Kichwa indigenous family that really knows their stuff and has been in business for years, you’ll get a very local and immersive experience.

They also have combination rafting and jungle tours, as well as overnight options in the jungle.

2. Markets in Tena Ecuador

A visit to the markets – Mercado Artesanal, Mercado Central or Mercado Sur – is a fun excursion in town , and you’ll find a lot here to interest you. Visiting a market is a great way to learn more about foods typical of the Amazon region of the country and give them a try.

Famously, the large and squishy chonta worms that are considered a delicacy in this part of the Amazon will catch your eye. They’re generally served barbecued on a stick.

There are also food stalls with delicious and inexpensive options – market food stalls are some of my favorite spots for inexpensive yet delicious food in Ecuador, so I highly recommend giving them a try.

Where To Stay in Tena

Tena has countless places to stay at all price points, from super cheap backpacker hostels to luxury lodges. You’ll find plenty of hostels and hotels located within the city of Tena, but many others take advantage of the jungle surrounding the city and offer a peaceful jungle setting that is a fantastic feature for visitors.

As a gateway to the Amazon, you won’t find the most luxurious of the luxury lodges here – if you’re looking for that, try Sacha Lodge or the Napo Wildlife Center in the deep Amazon.

However, the jungle area surrounding Tena has some of the best Amazon lodges at all different price points, definitely worth considering if you’re looking for an Amazon lodge experience.

Tena Ecuador Hotels

A popular hostel in the heart of the town of Tena, Hostal Zumag Sisa , makes it easy to walk to restaurants, grocery stores, tour agencies, and everything you could want as a traveler. The hostel offers dorm room rates of under $10 a night, and private rooms as well.

The incredible rooftop terrace will make you feel close to the jungle despite staying in town , and with its hammocks will quickly become your favorite spot.

My personal favorite place to stay in Tena – and one of my favorite places in Ecuador – Hostal Pakay is just on the edge of the town and the forest.

Hostal Pakay will make you feel like you’re staying in a remote lodge with all the conveniences of Tena minutes away.

You’ll never want to leave the front terrace where breakfast is served in the morning. Rooms are slightly more expensive than a standard hostel, but the difference is well worth it. Their jungle tours are fantastic, too – our full-day trek was incredible.

Kuyana Amazon Lodge is a fantastic option for a relatively low-budget lodge just outside of Tena , it is a great value for what feels like a luxury stay.

The setting of this lodge is ideal – it is quite “deep” in the jungle and feels very remote, but it still accessible by car.

Tour options through the lodge are plentiful and include everything from making chocolate and midnight wildlife tours to more jungle treks.

Located outside of Tena, nearby the jungle gateway town of Mishualli, El Jardin Lodge & Spa is a fantastic option, one of the nicest spots near Tena.

Rooms are fantastic and luxe – check out the rooms with private pools, and walls of glass facing the jungle and the river. You’ll love their gourmet meals, included with your stay, and the options for tours and activities.

Where To Eat in Tena

Cafe tortuga.

Cafe Tortuga is a favorite in Tena. They have a great mix of international food and Ecuadorian dishes, plus great desserts, coffee, and more. It’s a welcoming and social environment with a book exchange and strong wifi connection. Head here for breakfast, and make sure to get the banana pancakes!

La Fogata is a local spot with huge portions of delicious, fresh food. Nothing fancy here, just great, local food and great flavor.

Bella Pizza

Ecuador isn’t known for its pizza by any means, but Bella Pizza is a pretty good pizza place overall! If you’re tired out from a long jungle walk or excursion, order in.

Parilladas de Nancy

Parrilladas de Nancy has good food and big portions in a casual, local spot. Nothing fancy!

Quito to Tena

Most travelers to Tena visit from Quito , about 4.5 or 5 hours away from Tena by bus, or slightly less by car. Tickets from Quito’s Quitumbe Bus Terminal in the south of the city , and buses leave frequently.

TENA AMAZON

Imagine ecuador.

The region of Tena is the entrance to the Amazon basin, located in the Eastern part of Ecuador “El Oriente”, the area is a place of unparalleled biodiversity.

Covering more than a third of Ecuador’s land, the Oriente houses only a tiny percentage of the country’s population, including the native Achuar, Cofan, Huaorani and Quichua, just to mention a few.

Tena is a very special place for a short tour in the Amazon if you do not have much time; here you can experience the wonderful scenery of the Rio Napo and stay at one of our selected lodges.

Things to do in

Top Activities and Attractions in Tena

Tena and misahualli, gateway to the ecuadorian amazon, introduction.

Tena is the quintessential South American jungle town, the kind of place you expect to run into Indiana Jones stocking up on supplies before setting out in search of a lost city. Keep that image in your head because if you’re in Tena that Indiana Jones type is you, and you’re in for an adventure. Five hours southeast of  Quito , Tena is the perfect launching point for a jungle trek, a spelunking expedition, or a rafting or kayaking trip down one of the countless rivers that pass through or by the city.

Once an important colonial trading post in the  Amazon , Tena is now the commercial center and capital of the Napo Province. And though Tena is the commercial center of the province, with a population of just over 13,000, it still operates like a small town and has retained much of its culture and traditional lifestyle.

The area surrounding Tena supports a large population of lowland Quichua Indians, and significant numbers of Quijos and Chibcha Indigenous groups, among others, live further out in the forests outside the city. It’s possible to visit many of these communities and to observe and sometimes participate in traditional dancing, the preparation of chicha (an alcoholic drink made by masticating maiz, rice or yuca and fermenting the juice), shamanic rituals, and blowgun competitions.

For a rainforest city, Tena’s climate is surprisingly comfortable, it’s cooler, due to its elevation, and drier than most people expect. There’s rainfall year-round and the heaviest rains come in June, July, and August, but even in this very wet time it doesn’t necessarily rain every day or all day when it does rain. The rain is pleasant and warm, like the rain that those of us from the northern hemisphere only get in the sweltering heat of summer, but if you plan to be outside for long periods even warm rain can bring down your body temperature so it’s wise to have a slicker.

Orientation

The city is small enough so that you shouldn’t have too much trouble getting around. It’s divided into two halves by the rivers Tena and Pano and connected by two bridges, one for pedestrians and one for automobiles. There are several sand and pebble beaches on both sides of the river, as well as a number of plazas and parks, the most conspicuous of which is the Parque Amazonica, a botanical garden, and zoo located on a small peninsula between the rivers Tena and Pano and visible from the pedestrian bridge. There is also a nice riverside walkway on the western bank of the river Tena. The bus terminal is located on Avenida 15 de Noviembre between Calle Montero and Avenida del Chofer. The terminal is unattractive but don’t be too quick to judge the rest of the city based its appearance, the northern part of town is much nicer.

Transportation

Most roads in the Oriente are unpaved and subject to landslides and other delays, especially during the rainy season. The road from  Quito  to Tena is no exception, though it continues to be improved. There is regular bus service to Tena via Baeza, but you should book in advance as the buses fill up fast, particularly on Fridays and Sundays. There is a small airport outside of Tena but there are no commercial flights, only short flights over the jungle. Also, small white truck-taxis are abundant in the city. It’s a good idea to negotiate (haggle until you get them down to half or three-quarters of what they initially ask) your price before getting in because the taxi drivers in Tena, like everywhere else in South America, often overcharge.

Where to Stay

The city offers plentiful accommodations, all of which are relatively inexpensive. Los Yutzos (Tel: 0987503528) at the south end of the city on the River Pano and Hostal Vista Hermosa (Tel: (06) 288-6521) on 15 de Noviembre are two of the best places to stay. Both offer incredible views of the city and surrounding jungle.

Where to Eat

Tena’s selection of good eateries is sparse. The three below are recommended, stray from these and you’re on your own.

Chuquitos – turn left after crossing the pedestrian bridge and it will be just up the road on your left. High points are the good fish and chicken dishes, a bit more lively than normal, and great views of the river from their open-air dining room.

Cositas Ricas – on Avenida 15 de Noviembre near the pedestrian bridge. Standard but good Ecuadorian fare, i.e., chicken or fish with rice, avocado, and a small salad.

Pizzeria La Massilia – located at the corner of Olmedo and Garcia Moreno. Nice thatched roofed open dining room and decent pizza and Italian food.

Tena’s claims to fame are the rainforest and rivers that surround it. The jungle, especially if you get outside the city 15 or 20 kilometers, is impressive. First-timers will be changed forever after they lay their eyes on a pristine stretch of Amazon. There is no shortage of jungle guides or tour operators, many have offices at the northern end of town on Avenida 15 de Noviembre.

Moreover, Tena has reached near legendary status with whitewater enthusiasts and boasts the best rafting and kayaking in Ecuador and, some say, the world. The jungle rivers on the Amazon side of the Andes are bigger and have more consistent flows than their west-Andean counterparts. They are also the cleanest and most scenic rivers in Ecuador.  Ríos Ecuador  is by far the best rafting and kayaking tour operator in the country and their headquarters is in Tena, that ought to tell you something about the quality of the rivers!

You may also want to check out:

Sumaco Volcano – is located in the isolated Sumaco Napo-Galeras National Park and reaching it is one of the most intense experiences to be had in Ecuador. The volcano soars 3732 meters above the jungle and is surrounded by precipitous ravines and dense jungle, which have largely kept humans out and preserved its flora and fauna. You need a guide to reach Sumaco. Guides can be found in the villages along the Loreto Road, which meets the Tena-Quito road approximately 30 kilometers north of Tena.

Jatun Sacha Biological Station – is a great place to learn about the rainforest. The station is continually conducting rainforest research and, as the second-largest conservation organization in Ecuador, is involved in an array of sustainable development and forest protection projects. Jatun Sacha is on a dirt road that parallels the southern bank of the Napo River. This dirt road branches off the main highway 7km south of the bridge at Puerto Napo.

Misahuallí – is a bustling and somewhat remote port at the juncture of the rivers Napo and Misahuallí. The village was the original Ecuadorian jungle tourist outpost, and after dozens of years and despite the entrance of Tena and other jungle towns into the tourism market, is still a popular starting point for jungle tours and canoe trips. Misahuallí offers well-developed, though rustic, tourism services, including good craft shops, cafes, and lodging.

Cuevas de Jumandy – four kilometers north of Archidona on the road to Quito is a labyrinth of natural caves and tunnels that extend several kilometers underground. Don’t be put off by the main entrance, once you get past the gaudy pools and loud music (I turned around my first time, thinking “this can’t possibly be the place!”) you are in for a treat. You can hire a guide from the changing-area reception desk and, reportedly, there are guides in Tena who will take you into the caves through other, less obnoxious entrances – ask around.

Archidona – a colonial town, founded in 1560, north of Tena, Archidona still serves as one of the regions main missionary outposts. It’s also a business and social center for the small Quichua communities in its vicinity. Archidona’s festivals attract people from all around and several times throughout the year there are Quichua beauty and culture pageants, in which contestants, drawn from the many Quichua communities in the area, compete for the title of “Queen of the Quichua”. The pageants are a unique opportunity to hear Quichua spoken and sung and to see some very old dances and customs. There are several elimination rounds and the finale is usually held in April.

tena ecuador tours

Tena is a town in Ecuador 's Amazon jungle area. It is the capital of the Napo Province and a quiet city in the Amazon rainforest. It is known as the “cinnamon capital" of Ecuador. It has emerged as one of the top industrialized centers. Tena is home to a major regional hospital and many tourist businesses, including a small size airport and a bus terminal.

Tena is a popular launching point for jungle, kayaking and rafting tours in Ecuador's Amazon rainforest region. The entry to the city is marked by a statue of the indigenous hero Jumandy, who led an uprising against the Spanish colonizers in 1578 and was executed subsequently.

At the unification of the Tena and Pano rivers in the center of the town lies a popular pedestrian bridge, "el puente peatonal". The rivers become the Tena River, which soon joins with the Misahualli and eventually flows into the Napo River. The Napo winds its way east into Peru and Brazil, and is in effect the 9th largest tributary to the Amazon River.

Tena is popular with travelers, since it is known as being peaceful, orderly, clean and more geared towards tourists. Many inexpensive hotels, tourist agencies, and restaurants cater to backpackers who commonly use the town as a jumping-off point for trips into the rainforest. Tena is surrounded by forested hills and is located at the edge of the Andes, which are visible to the west.

Tena and its surrounding indigenous communities are also bases for many volunteers working for reforestation projects, with community support in development initiatives in diverse, but connected areas such as bio-piracy, ecotourism and capacity building. Ecuador has one of the best politically organized indigenous populations in Latin America and Tena houses two major confederations, Fonakin (Federacion de Organisaciones de la Nacionalidades Kichwa de Napo) and Ashin (Association de Shamanes Indigenas de Napo); one of the major stand-offs during the 2001 indigenous uprising in Ecuador, took place here.

In comparison to Puyo, the capital of the neighboring province Pastaza, which is both bigger and growing faster, Tena has a lively night life with bars that cater to foreigners. Friday and Saturday nights crowds of volunteers, guides (both indigenous and foreign), and local young people assemble in the "discotecas" playing reggaeton, salsa, and pop music. One will also find a wide variety of "comidas tipicas", preparing and serving food in the traditional manners of the local peoples

Bus from Quito (about 6 hours). Locals selling food and drink will often come onto the bus at various stops selling food and drink at reasonable prices. Some buses will have toilet facilities on board, however many times they will not allow men to use these, only women, so be careful! Costs: about $7 (2013). Flights from Quito to the new airport Jumandy in Ahuano on the Napo river, 3 times a week.

A taxi trip in Tena costs $1, for places outside it costs more. As an orientation a trip from Tena to Archidona costs $4, which is about 8-10 km, taxi to Misahualli $8.

Some roads in the Oriente are still unpaved, but many roads are now paved, like the road from Quito to Tena. There is regular bus service to Tena via Baeza from the Quitumbe bus terminal. Tena's new airport is in Ahuano, a taxi to/from there is about $15. It's a good idea to agree upon the price before riding in a taxi.

Tena is famous for the rainforest and rivers that surround it. The jungle, especially if you get outside the city 15 or 20 km, is impressive. First-timers will be changed forever after they lay their eyes on a pristine stretch of Amazon. There is no shortage of jungle guides or tour operators, many have offices in the center of town on Avenida 15 de Noviembre.

  • Rafting : Tena has reached near legendary status with whitewater enthusiasts since the 2005 World Rafting Championships were organized in the area by pioneers called Yacu Amu (now Rios Ecuador ). Tena boasts the best rafting and kayaking in Ecuador. The jungle rivers on the Amazon side of the Andes are bigger and have more consistent flows than their west-Andean counterparts. They are also the cleanest and most scenic rivers in Ecuador. Ríos Ecuador offers a popular river called Jatunyacu, a fun river for people who have never been rafting before or people who are looking for big waves and excitement. The Jatunyacu is a grade 3 river. Ríos Ecuador also offers trips to other rivers in the area with grade 4+. But for more rafting, also look for River People. Caution is advised as some accidents have resulted from poor safety standards. Lower price may sometimes sacrifice safety or guide's salary. Make sure the boats are not over-loaded, always have a safety kayaker, and remember your guide can tip you over, but you can't over tip your guide.
  • Caving : By taking a short bus to the nearby town of Archidona, one can show to the Jumandí caves and pay $5 for a less formal guided tour that involves a bit of swimming and climbing through small spaces. Cuevas de Jumandy - four kilometers north of Archidona on the road to Quito is a labyrinth of natural caves and tunnels that extend several kilometers underground. Don't be put off by the main entrance, once you get past the gaudy pools and loud music, you are in for a treat. Misahuallí offers well developed, though rustic, tourism services, including good craft shops, cafes, lodging, and tour operators. The dozen or so capuchin monkeys that inhabit the central park are hilarious (beware- they'll take things out of your hands and bags) and amiable. But please do not feed the monkeys junk food.

· Archidona : A colonial town, founded in 1560, north of Tena, Archidona still serves as one of the region's main missionary outposts. Protect the Amazon Rainforest near Tena! For those interested in exploring the Amazon Rainforest and in conserving it, you can do your part by adopting an acre of rainforest in the Ecuadorian Amazon or by adopting a chocolate tree, a vital resource in conserving this unique ecosystem for future generations.

Nawpak Causay means "the traditional way of life" in Ecuador's indigenous language of Kichwa. This tourist attraction is an outdoor museum of life-sized traps which have traditionally been used by indigenous people of the Amazon for hunting (and even warfare!). All the traps are built by the community members out of all-natural rainforest materials, and are activated in demonstrations during the tour! The end of the tour involves a taste of guayusa tea - known by indigenous people for its numerous health benefits, and a chance to try out a traditional 1-2-m blow dart! Call and ask to speak to Gregorio about the "trampas tipicas"

Getting there:

1) you can go to Misahualli and arrange a tour with one of the tour agencies (beware of the canoe drivers on the main square, they are not licensed guides), who will take you there via boat along the Napo river (very beautiful, and you can also visit the Amozoonico zoo afterward).

2) you can hop on a bus going to Ahuano and ask them to let you off at Ñukanchi Kausay, or you can get dropped off at Jatun Sacha and check that out before walking over to the Nukanchi Kausay (only a 5 minute walk down the road).

3) You may be able to go there tubing from either Tena or Misahualli - ask around.

Gregorio is also well-versed in Amazonian medicinal plants, and leads a number of exciting jungle walks to see and talk about medicinal plants, shamism, and various jungle animals. If you have some time, stick around for a while. The community even has a bar.

  • Super Tia is located next to the bus terminal on the road "15 de Noviembre" (the main road in Tena). Super Tia is the local supermarket that provides everything from fruits to toys. The prices are good and all products are marked. The opening hours are daily from 08:00 to 23:00.

Tena's selection of good eateries is sparse. But there are a few recommended:

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

Shirley, usa.

It is a welcome retreat from most of the concrete hostels you find around the cities in Ecuador.  There are hammocks to relax in and we felt really at home.

They offer a lot of different tours, and we went rafting which was a blast.

TINA, GERMANY

Very nice hostal, huts are surrounded by a nice garden, feels a bit like in the jungle. The breakfast is very good with fresh fruits and juice.  We can highly recommend the rainforest hike.  It was one of the best hostals we stayed in Ecuador.

ANONYMOUS

Honestly a really great hostel to easily experience the Amazon with only a weekend or a few days. Hostal Pakay gives you the feeling of solitude but you can easily walk to the bus station and restaurants in town. They run a ton of different trips from hiking to rafting to caving to visiting indigenous communities, you will not run out of things to do. Would definitely return the next time I'm in Ecuador
