10 dream cycling trips to take in 2023

The trips we'd love to take in 2023..

What makes a bike trip a dream trip? That’s a question with a thousand answers depending on your experience, ability, and interests. For a beginning cyclist, it might mean a first two-hour ride.

An average rider may dream of completing a first century or climbing a significant mountain pass. More advanced cyclists can contemplate a multi-day trip through the Alps or the Rockies. Adventurous types we’ve known have tackled challenges like riding to the Mount Everest Base Camp at 17,000 feet elevation or traversing the Americas from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego.

Today, there are more companies that organize bike trips than ever. Here are 10 trips we’d love to take in 2023.

Trek Travel: Crater Lake & Oregon Cascades

trek travel 2023

This is a good choice for a first fully guided trip. Trek Travel is celebrating its 20 th anniversary, organizing trips to 14 countries and more than 20 U.S. states. After shuttling from Redmond Airport to Crater Lake National Park, this five-day tour opens with a 35-mile afternoon ride around the perimeter of what is one of the world’s deepest and most scenic bodies of water. For $3,700 per person, the package includes use of a Trek Domane SL 7 disc or a Verve+ e-bike, along with four night’s hotel accommodation, two guides, support van, most meals and two happy hours. And every day on the journey north through Oregon, there are up to three route options, the longest being 73 miles (and 6,000 feet of climbing) on the penultimate day from Sisters over McKenzie Pass to Belknap Springs and back. With stunning views of the Cascade Range, the cosmopolitan fun of Bend and staying at both rustic and boutique hotels, this has the makings of a perfect vacation. One newcomer said: “My first trip with Trek Travel and it was a trip of a lifetime!”

Pure Adventures: Vail to Aspen

trek travel 2023

Named one of the best cycling tour companies in the 2021 USA Today Readers’ Choice Awards, Pure Adventures has almost three decades of organizing trips on four continents. Perhaps the most challenging of its domestic tours is in the Rocky Mountains, with a week of riding in terrain made famous by the Coors Classic, USA Pro Challenge and Colorado Classic stage races. The first few days include climbs to Beaver Creek and Vail Pass (which is on the 78-mile Copper Triangle with 6,000 feet of elevation gain). Day 6 also has a heavy dose of climbing out and back from Snowmass Village, including the uphill from Aspen to Maroon Lake and views of the iconic, snow-crested Maroon Bells. Cost for the trip, which includes six hotel overnights, most meals and sag support, starts at $3,850. One Canadian customer said: “I have not stopped telling my friends how great the whole trip was. We will be back!”

Backroads: Through Chile’s Ring of Fire

Established 43 years ago, Backroads operates in more than 50 countries with biking, hiking and multi-adventure trips. One of the company’s most exotic bike trips is a seven-day tour in the national parks of Chile in that country’s summer months of January and March. The rides go through a pristine landscape of snow-capped volcanoes and lava fields (part of the Pacific Ring of Fire), virgin rain forests, waterfalls and lakes. The trip starts with two nights in Puerto Varas, the “city of roses,” which his become the “it” place of Chile with views across a lake to the spectacular, 8,700-foot-high Osorno volcano. This trip will appeal to a range of cyclists, with the longest ride being 59 miles and 4,000 feet of climbing. One American client said: “We are beginner-ish bikers and managed great!” Prices for the week start at $6,500.

Garda Bike Hotel: Strade Bianche + Lake Garda

trek travel 2023

This will be a dream trip for any competitive cyclist, with amazing highlights: riding the Gran Fondo Strade Bianche after watching the finish of the pro race in Siena the day before. A great option would be to start with three nights at the company’s four-star hotel on Lake Garda, acclimating to Italy in springtime and training for the gran fondo. Then comes a three-hour transfer to Tuscany for four nights just outside Siena. There are guided group rides daily before the gran fondo on Sunday, March 5, 2023. The long course of 142.5 kilometers features 54.7 kilometers of the iconic white roads, while the 86.8 kilometer alternative incudes “only” 21.6 kilometers of strade bianche . Price depends on choosing the four-day or seven-day package, but all options include the rental of a Pinarello Grevil bike. And the food and wines of Tuscany are out of this world. “The best bike trip I’ve ever been on,” one client said. “An experience for a lifetime,” said another.

Go4Cycling: Flanders Week (Flanders & Roubaix)

trek travel 2023

If you can’t make it to Strade Bianche, then this Belgian company offers an outstanding 10-day Flanders Week package, which includes riding the Tour of Flanders bergs and Paris–Roubaix cobblestones, along with VIP spectating at those two monuments. Participants will be picked up on March 31 from Brussels airport and shuttled to their 4-star hotel in Kortrijk (where some of the ProTour teams also stay) for the entirety of this 2023 trip. From $3,750, the price includes 10 nights in Kortrijk; most meals (except lunch); support vehicles, group leaders, ride guides and a mechanic; visits to cycling museums; and those VIP experiences at the cobbled classics. Rental of BMC race bikes and entry to the Flanders Cyclo and Roubaix Challenge are extras. One participant said: “Go4Cycling are pros, they are Belgians, cyclists leading cyclists…what more could you want? Waffles? Frites? Leffe?”

Grand Tours Project: Riding Week 3 of the 2023 Giro

As an Official Tour Operator of the Giro d’Italia, the Grand Tours Project has unprecedent access to the race routes and the stage finishes. Depending on your cycling ability (and strength!), this well-established company offers weeklong trips that include riding every kilometer of each Giro stage or a more rider-friendly version in which you do up to 100 kilometers a day. The final week of the 2023 Giro, May 22–29, is the most spectacular (and will be the most decisive), featuring the epic climbs of Monte Bondone, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and the Monte Lussari time trial. A high-speed train will take participants to the final stage in Rome, where they will ride two laps of the day’s race circuit before having their photos taken on the winners’ podium. The week’s package starts at just under $5,000. A rider who experienced a similar Week 3 trip in 2022, said this after one challenging day through the Dolomites: “Soaked, tired and satisfied, we arrive at the finish and gratefully jump into our support car. With the heating and our favorite Van Morrison album on, we drive to our next hotel, realizing we might just have lived our most epic day on the bike…. Viva Il Giro!”

Ride & Seek: Most Beautiful Tour (Provence + Ventoux)

trek travel 2023

Australian tour operator Ride & Seek Bicycle Adventures, established 10 years ago, runs bike trips through 30 countries in all five continents. This coming year (June 6 to 13), the company is offering something different with what it calls its “most beautiful tour” from its European base in Provence for just under $4,500. Hosted by Mike Tomalaris, the Aussie TV commentator who has been covering the Tour de France for three decades, this is an ideal trip for couples. More experienced cyclists can go on extra loops, even up Mont Ventoux, while non-riders will have daily activities to keep them busy, while all can enjoy gourmet dining accompanied by the region’s vintage wines. Besides visits to famed towns like Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, the tour routes encompass many of France’s most beautiful villages. One Ride & Seek customer said: “An awesome blend of cycling challenges, drop-dead scenery and gastronomic experience.”

Thomson Bike Tours: Epic Trans Cantabrian Mountains

Founded by Peter Thomson 21 years ago, this U.S. company has been rated No. 1 Official Tour de France Premium Tour Operator. But besides providing clients with an up-close-and-personal experience of the world’s biggest bike race, it also offers more than 15 annual trips called Epic Trans-Challenges, which traverse various mountain ranges, averaging up to 120 kilometers and 10,000 feet of climbing per day. Perhaps the most challenging is the Epic Trans Cantabrian Mountains in northwest Spain. The mid-August 2023 edition costs from $4,495 for seven nights; those not bringing their own bikes can rent a Felt FR Advanced bike at $500 for the week. The last three days of riding feature the spectacular Lagos de Covadonga, a 158-kilometer ride through Asturias and the iconic Alto El Angliru—regarded as the toughest climb in pro cycling. As one Thomson client put it: “Trans-Cantabria will surprise the most seasoned cyclist with its amazing landscapes, culminating in an epic ride (and most likely partial walk) up the indescribable Angliru.”

DuVine: Switzerland Journey (Lake Geneva to Lake Como)

With two dates in late June and mid-August, this weeklong ride through the Swiss Alps contains much of what makes Switzerland such a spectacular country for cycling. It’s organized by Duvine Cycling + Adventure, which was founded 26 years ago and operates in more than 20 countries. This is one of its most challenging and memorable trips, with prices from $5,095 for seven hotel nights, most meals and local wines included, along with use of a Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra Di2 bike. Each day’s journey is point-to-point with up to 10,000 feet of climbing. Highlights include what many consider the most beautiful climb in the Alps, the 10-kilometer, 9-percent Grosse Scheidegg, on a perfectly paved one-lane road that is closed to other traffic. There’s also a climb on smooth gravel to the remote Gurnigel Pass and an ascent to the challenging, but little-known Mittelberg where you hear “just the sound of clanging cowbells.” One cyclist who experienced a DuVine tour in the Alps said: “It was tough (in a good way)…best experience of my life.”

InGamba: Portugal End to End

trek travel 2023

This California-based company chose to call itself InGamba (Italian slang for “in the know”) because it wanted to create trips that were designed to not only discover magnificent cycling in places all over the world but also get into the fabric of the countries, embracing the food, wine and culture as presented by locals. InGamba founder  João Correia is a former Portuguese pro racer, so you can be sure that the bike trip from the north of Portugal to the very south along the Estrada Nacional 2 is one of the best, passing through regions little known by traditional tourists. The cost of the September 2023 tour is high at $8,450 but it includes all lodging, food and beverages, use of a Pinarello Dogma bike, custom Castelli clothing, and daily post-ride massage and bike wash. The distance over six days is 754 kilometers; the longest day is 163 kilometers and total climbing is over 10,000 meters (almost 33,000 feet). One client said: “You will immerse into the week so perfectly that you will forget all the pressures of life…and come out the other end refreshed.”

2023 Trek Fuel EX 9.9 XX1 AXS review: A widely capable trail bike with a high-end build

2023 Trek Fuel EX, SF, rock corner

I’ll admit, climbing is not my favourite part of a ride, but when you get a bike that climbs like Trek’s new Fuel EX, cranking uphill gets a lot more enjoyable! The 2023 Fuel EX will serve as Trek’s mid-travel do-everything trail bike, and it offers a near perfect ‘quiver-killer’ package with its aggressive climbing ability, slack steering angle and 140/150mm travel. Add adjustable geometry and shock progressivity to that, and you’ve got one versatile trail machine.

I picked up the Fuel EX 9.9 XX1 AXS during Crankworx Whistler, giving me a few weeks to get a handful of rides on it. Right away I can say the bike climbs like a hyperactive goat, but my area demands a bike that can descend well too. The Fuel EXs steering angle is slack enough for any trail, so the bike only finds its limit on really rough terrain that challenges its 140mms of rear travel.

2023 Trek Fuel EX – basic specs:

2023 Trek Fuel EX, non-drive side

In this article we’ll discuss how the new Fuel EX rides. Here’s few basic specs, but check out my launch post for all the details on the new Fuel EX’s features, geometry and build kit options.

The Fuel EX frames are offered in both aluminum or carbon, with 140mm rear travel and a 150mm fork (except the entry level EX 5 which carries over the outgoing frame with 130mm travel). Most sizes ride on 29” wheels, but the XS frames run 27.5” only and the smalls offer the option of 27.5” or 29”. The 29ers can be converted to mullet setups, but Trek recommends adding a 160mm fork.

2023 Trek Fuel EX geo chart, stock position

Between Trek’s Mino Link chip and optional angle adjust headset cups for the Fuel EX, there’s plenty of variation in frame geometry depending on settings. Some angles and measurements change with frame size as well, particularly the rear end lengths which are now size-specific.

To summarize it quickly, the Fuel EX’s head tube angle can range from 63.5° to 66° with the optional cups in play. Without the cups, the Mino Link gives you the choice of 64.5 or 65°. Seat masts are pretty steep at 76 to 78.9° across all sizes/settings.

Trek stretched out some pretty lengthy reaches on the Fuel EXs; The M/L bike I’m testing measures 470mm. Out back, Trek leaned towards the middle with their new size-specific chainstay lengths. The M/L frame I rode has 440mm stays, which are not short but not long either.

2023 Trek Fuel EX, on scale

The top-of-the-line Fuel EX 9.9 XX1 AX S weighs 32.76lbs (with pedals).

Ride Impressions: Suspension

2023 Trek Fuel EX, linkage

I am quite familiar with Trek’s suspension, as I’ve owned a Remedy for the last few years. I wasn’t surprised to find the Fuel EX climbs even better, and offers about 95% of the Remedy’s downhill prowess.

Trek’s ABP linkage is a very supportive climber, especially with the rear shock in its firm position. With the shock’s help, the rear end firms up enough that the rear wheel starts floating over pockets between roots and rocks, rather than diving into them. You’ll still use about 50% of the rear travel on singletrack trails in firm mode, so I still find traction is ample and the ride remains fairly comfortable.

2023 Trek Fuel EX, SF climb, rocks

What’s great is how the Fuel EX is a solid climber without any help from the shock too. Climbing technical singletrack in open mode, I only dipped into 2-3mms more travel than climbing in firm mode. The ride does get a bit more forgiving and slightly more grippy in open mode (without losing much efficiency), so it’s a practical option for rougher ascents.

2023 Trek Fuel EX, Javi on slab

Somehow, despite how supportive the Fuel EX’s ABP linkage is going uphill, it’s a whole different beast going down. It’s as if the linkage is speed-sensitive, as it responds very well to all kinds of high-speed impacts and has an impressive ability to round off sharp hits. Whether it’s small chatter or a full-on rock garden, the Fuel EX smooths out the trail very nicely. The rear wheel always feels well planted, and the linkage gives the bike a plowy feel through rough terrain. I do find Trek’s bikes aren’t super poppy on jumps, but they do have ample mid-stroke support to pump well through rollers and berms.

2023 Trek Fuel EX, SF, chute

I have some delightfully rough trails in my area of B.C. and I did find moments where more than 140mm travel would have been ideal! That said, I don’t think you could do much better with 140mms of suspension than the Fuel EX has. While it’s really the slack steering that allows this bike to tackle pretty serious terrain, the adjustable shock rate also raises this bike’s tolerance for fast, rough riding.

2023 Trek Fuel EX, Less/More chip

I had no trouble getting full travel from the bike in its more linear LESS mode, and being a lightweight rider this is the mode I’d keep the bike in. It was perfectly dialed – I was enjoying full travel on descents but not frequently thrashing the bike with harsh bottom-outs.

When I flipped the chip into MORE mode, it did make a noticeable difference to the ride, but didn’t have much effect on how much travel I was using. I expected the bike to feel stiffer than preferred and that I’d need a good hard hit to bottom out the bike with the added progression. Instead I wound up using all the bike’s travel on any typical descent, although there was a palpable difference in how the bike felt. I could tell the linkage was resisting hard, fast impacts more than before, so I’d bet fans of coil shocks, or heavier and more aggressive riders would appreciate the difference the chip makes. In my case, it just made the ride a bit firmer than it needed to be. If I was a competitive racer I’d probably prefer MORE mode, but I ride recreationally so I keep things on the soft side!

2023 Trek Fuel EX, SF climbing

Fit-wise, the first thing I noticed about the Fuel EX is its generous reach. At 470mm on the M/L frame, it’s about the longest bike I’ve ridden yet. This nearly straightens my arms, so I don’t think I’d want to go any longer, but it did feel roomy and comfortable on the trails. Of course the steep 77.5 degree seat mast leans you over that lengthy front end, so you wind up well centered between the wheels.

I liked the 440mm chainstay length on the M/L Fuel EX. It’s not so long that the bike feels like an enduro sled, but it is long enough to provide a stable ride and great climbing traction on steep uphill sections.

I am also a fan of slack steering angles. I didn’t have the optional headset cups for the Fuel EX so I couldn’t go to 63.5°, but my demo bike was set up at 64.5°. That’s a great number for rowdy trails, and definitely allows this mid-travel bike to take on enduro-level terrain. I have not found running a slack steering angle causes any real penalty on climbs, so I’m happy with a slack trail bike.

2023 Trek Fuel EX, Mino Link

The Fuel EX comes with the Mino link in Low position, which is definitely the preferred setting for my local terrain. The BB does ride pretty low in this position at 335mm, but I must be getting used to low BB’s because I didn’t have any problem with pedal strikes on this bike.

Standover height on the Fuel EX is not particularly low, but not problematic for me. If I wound up near the head tube I could damage some sensitive bits, but in front of the saddle there’s ample clearance for standing comfortably.

On-Bike Tools and Storage:

2023 Trek Fuel EX, down tube storage

In recent years, Trek has jumped on board with on-bike storage and tools. The Fuel EX, in either aluminum or carbon, offers a frame storage compartment in the down tube. The included Bontrager BITS tool roll is designed to hold a tube, co2 canisters, an inflator head and tire levers.

2023 Trek Fuel EX, steerer tube tool

The high-end Fuel EX 9.9s also come with tools in the steerer tube. The Bontrager tool offers a chainbreaker, and a removable multi-tool with seven allen keys, a torx and a flathead screwdriver bit.

Components:

2023 Trek Fuel EX, XX1 AXS drivetrain

The Fuel EX 9.9 XX1 AXS boasts a pretty top-of-the-line build kit, and gave me my first experience with SRAM’s AXS electronic drivetrain. I really like the feel and ergonomics of SRAM’s dropper post and shifter remotes, as the light push-button action is undeniably easier than throwing paddles on a traditional cable shifter. Performance-wise, the AXS drivetrain was great but not perfect – about once on every ride I’d get a bit of a hesitation when shifting (not always the same gear), and once the derailleur harshly jumped back into a gear after I rode a rough downhill section. Otherwise, the shifting was quick and precise, so for my short test I didn’t attempt to reconfigure the shifting. I had no real mechanical issues with any of the AXS components on my rides.

2023 Trek Fuel EX, handlebar

Aside from the XX1 AXS drivetrain I’d say it’s the one-piece handlebar/stem that gives the top-tier Fuel EX a really high performance look. The Bontrager RSL bar/stem offers a 27.5mm rise, 820mm stock width, and a 45mm stem length with zero rise.

SRAM’s Code RSC brakes offered ample power for any descent, but I was a bit surprised to feel how much squeeze they required to get full braking force. Of course, their modulation is great but compared to the TRP DH-R EVO’s I’ve been riding the Code RSC’s required more effort to almost lock up a wheel.

2023 Trek Fuel EX, fork

When I picked up the Fuel EX Trek’s people had it all set up for me, and I didn’t have to touch any adjustments on the fork or rear shock throughout my testing. Not surprisingly, the top-notch Fox Factory 36 EVOL fork with its Grip 2 damper left me nothing to complain about, as did the Fox Factory Float X rear shock.

2023 Trek Fuel EX, wheel/tire

Bontrager’s Line Pro 30 carbon wheelset offered that pleasant, slightly damped feeling carbon rims can provide, and survived my testing with no damage to speak of. The Bontrager SE5 Team Issue tires don’t match Maxxis’ Minions or Assegais in terms of overall grip, but they’re still fairly good for traction and they’re a fast rolling tire. To make sure you can get those wheels moving over anything, the Fuel EX 9.9 XX1 AXS comes with a small 30t front chainring and a 10-52t rear cassette.

I had no comfort issues with the Bontrager Arvada saddle, and no other mechanical concerns with any other components.

2023 Trek Fuel EX, drive side

I’ve described how well the Trek is set up for all-around trail riding, but one thing I really appreciate is the relatively low weight of the Fuel EX 9.9 XX1 AXS. I’m a small guy, so I find lighter bikes a pleasure to climb, as they’re easy to heave up over bumps and power up steep sections. I’d bet Trek could have gone even lighter, but probably not with all the functionality plus the bells and whistles this bike includes.

The Fuel EX 9.9 XX1 AXS retails for $10,749.99 .

I rode a lower end version of this bike ( 9.7?) earlier this year in Moab, and I was equally impressed. I called it a hero bike because I rode like I’ve never ridden before – my grey haired friends amazed to see me going off 5+ foot drops and riding past them when they got off to walk ( both up and down!).

Jason D West

The yellow is absolutely terrible. It looks like a GT. Seems like a great bike nothing but positive things to say. Good job Trek

JBikes

I hope this signals a reduction the “TREK” logo size across their bike line-up. Some of the high end trek road bike have embarrassingly large logos.

JTC

32+ lbs for the very top spec seems a little heavy? Otherwise it sounds like a great trail bike.

Brian

The Fuel EX 8 (aluminium frame) has put on 1.8 kg, which seems crazy.

Deputy Dawg

Nice review, Steve. While you’re at one end of the travel needs spectrum, I’m at the other, trying to figure out whether I really need a bike with this much travel.

Love the yellow. So tired of Boring Black…..

DefRyder

Looks like Trek outsourced frame design to Astro. A definite step backwards in aesthetics. Hopefully the bike rides much better than how awful it looks.

Nuno Marrazes

I am definitely out of touch with today’s standards of what’s light and what climbs well

Tom

Have Trek given up on the through shaft damper? I have an 2018 Fuel Ex which I love, wondering if it’s now obsolete.

I hope they have

Douglas

I noticed that they shortened the crank arms on the larger sizes to 170mm

On Test | Is the Trek Fuel EX 2023 the most forward-thinking trail bike out there?

Huge news in the trail bike world, the brand new 2023 Trek Fuel EX has landed and it looks like an absolute ripper! As we predicted when we tested the electrified Fuel EXe a couple of months ago, Trek is bringing many of the same updates to the non-motorised version. There are some surprises however, with the new Fuel EX adopting some of the innovations shown in the latest Session downhill bike, while also unveiling brand new tech that makes this one of the most versatile Trek mountain bikes we’ve ever seen.

Watch our video review of the Trek Fuel EX 2023 here:

trek fuel ex 2023

What’s changed with the 2023 Trek Fuel EX?

For 2023 the Trek Fuel EX receives an all-new frame design, and it also sees a 10mm increase in suspension travel. Stock bikes are now equipped with a 150mm travel fork, while the ABP platform delivers 140mm of rear travel.

Most frame sizes will come with 29in wheels, though the two smallest frame sizes will be available with 27.5in wheels. And as with previous models, the Fuel EX will be offered in both alloy and carbon variants.

With the aim of improving overall practicality, some of the features we’ve seen in the past have been eliminated from the new Fuel EX. The Knock Block headset is gone, and so too is the proprietary Thru Shaft shock and custom RE:aktiv damper. You’ll also no longer find a press-fit bottom bracket, with the Fuel EX moving to a more popular threaded BB shell.

Trek has also adopted guided internal cable routing, both on the carbon and alloy frames. The same goes for the integrated downtube storage. And as with the latest Trek Slash , there’s a new two-piece, dual-density, bolt-on armour plate for the downtube.

trek fuel ex 2023

There’s huge versatility

For sure one of the most exciting aspects of the 2023 Trek Fuel EX is its in-built versatility.

Of course you’ll still find the Mino Link flip chip, which allows you to tweak the angles by 0.5° and the BB height by 8mm.

Adding to that, there’s now a flip chip at the lower shock mount for fine-tuning the suspension’s leverage rate. We first saw this on the Session downhill bike, and the concept is the same here with ‘More’ or ‘Less’ settings. The Fuel EX will come setup from the factory in the Less progressive setting, which delivers a plusher ride quality and is well suited to air shocks. Riders can flip the chip around to increase progressitivity for more support on bigger jump trails, which is also designed to work better with coil shocks. Yes, the new frame is coil shock compatible.

trek fuel ex 2023

3-way head angle adjustment

Furthermore, you can now tweak the head angle independently on the new Trek Fuel EX.

Stock bikes will come with neutral headset cups, though Trek will also be offering an offset cup that allows you to slacken or steepen the head angle by 1°. The execution is different to the Specialized Stumpjumper EVO , with the Fuel EX utilising press-in headset cups that require a proper tool for removal and installation. Trek states this was done to provide a snug and secure interface, with less chance of the headset developing play or creaking over time.

Unfortunately the Fuel EX won’t come supplied with the offset headset cups. Those will be sold separately, and we understand they won’t be available immediately either. When they are available, owners will be able to set up the head angle to be as slack as 62.9° or as steep as 66°, which is wild!

trek fuel ex 2023

Oh, it’s mullet compatible too!

As if that wasn’t enough adjustment, the Trek Fuel EX can be setup as a mullet too. If you do decide to fit a 27.5in rear wheel, Trek recommends flipping the Mino Link in the High position, and it also suggests running a 160mm travel fork to help lift the BB height back up to its optimal position.

It’s worth noting that most of the stock Fuel EX models come with a Fox 36 fork, so it’ll be relatively easy to fit a 160mm air shaft to extend the travel without having to buy a whole new fork.

trek fuel ex 2023

And big geometry updates

Along with the increase in travel, the 2023 Trek Fuel EX has also received a significant overhaul of its geometry.

In its stock configuration, the head angle has been slackened out to 64.5° and the effective seat angle has been steepened to around 77.5°. Reach measurements have grown, with a Medium frame now sitting at 450mm, and a Large at 485mm. All good stuff for a modern trail bike.

Perhaps more exciting however, is the adoption of size-specific rear centre lengths. By manipulating the suspension pivot locations on the front triangle, Trek’s engineers have been able to adjust the rear end length to better maintain weight distribution throughout the size range. On the smaller frames you’ll find a 435mm rear centre length, which grows to 450mm on the largest frame size.

Speaking of frame sizes, it’s worth acknowledging that Trek will be producing no fewer than eight sizes across the Fuel EX lineup. Yes, eight ! The XXL size will only be available in alloy, but it’s still fantastic to see given that most brands only produce 3-4 frame sizes.

Also of note is the move to a fatter 34.9mm seat tube diameter. Along with an increased insertion depth, the Fuel EX is designed to fit modern, longer-stroke dropper posts.

Trek Fuel EX price & specs

In Australia, there will be four models available in the 2023 Trek Fuel EX lineup. Prices will start at $4,999 AUD for the Fuel EX 7, and will top out at $8,999 AUD for the Fuel EX 9.8.

What about that gorgeous Fuel EX 9.9 model shown here? We understand that Trek Australia will be offering these in a limited number available through the Project One custom bike builder, though we’re still waiting to confirm pricing and availability.

If you’re looking for something on the other side of the spectrum, the previous generation Fuel EX 5 will carry over into 2023. This provides a more budget-friendly option at $3,799 AUD, though it does miss out on all of the frame and suspension updates.

1) glamping.

Glamping is an increasingly popular travel trend, with more and more people seeking the perfect balance between getting away from it all while still being able to enjoy the creature comforts of home. Glamping, or "glamorous camping," is a way to stay in nature without sacrificing comfort. It combines the best of both worlds—the feeling of freedom and simplicity that comes with camping, and the luxury amenities that come with a traditional vacation. For those looking for a unique experience, glamping offers travelers a chance to immerse themselves in nature without having to rough it completely. Instead of sleeping on the ground in a cramped tent, those who go glamping can stay in one of the many luxurious lodges now available around the world. These lodges are often outfitted with plush beds, private bathrooms, fireplaces, and even hot tubs! Not only do you get an unforgettable experience surrounded by beautiful natural settings like mountains and forests, but you also have access to modern amenities like Wi-Fi and air conditioning.

The convenience factor associated with glamping is another reason why it has become such a popular travel trend in recent years. For instance, many glamping spots provide their own equipment (tents or cabins) so that you don't need to worry about packing your own gear when you head out on your trip. This makes it easier than ever before to hit the road without having to worry about all of the logistics involved with traditional camping trips. Whether you're looking for something low-key like stargazing or bird watching or something higher-energy like zip lining through trees or paddle boarding across crystal clear lakes – there are plenty of options for everyone! Add this together with its convenience factor and luxurious amenities and it's easy to see why glamping has become such a top travel trend for 2023! Related: Top 5 Glamping Locations In The U.S.

2) Motorcycle Camping

Motorcycle camping is quickly becoming one of the top travel trends for 2023, as it offers travelers a unique combination of adventure and exploration that can't be found anywhere else. Motorcycle camping appeals to those looking for an experience that blends the thrill of the open road with the serenity of the outdoors. On a motorcycle camping trip, adventurers have complete control over their route and pace, allowing them to customize their trip to fit their individual needs and desires. In addition to offering more freedom than traditional road trips, motorcycle camping also allows travelers to get up close and personal with nature in ways they wouldn't otherwise be able to. Motorcyclists can make stops along their journey to explore natural wonders like state parks or national forests without having to pack up all their gear each time. This makes it easier for travelers to take in panoramic views and soak up breathtaking vistas without having to lug around heavy equipment or make extensive camp setups. Related: 5 Beginner Tips For Solo Motorcycle Camping Another advantage of motorcycle camping is its cost-effectiveness when compared with other forms of travel. With a single tank of fuel, you can cover hundreds of miles and still save money on food and lodging by cooking meals while out on the open road. Motorcycles also require much less maintenance than cars or RVs, making it easy for even first-time riders to jump right into this thrilling form of travel without sacrificing safety or reliability.\

Finally, many find comfort in the sense of camaraderie associated with motorcycle camping trips; by joining others who are traveling through similar places at similar times, bikers are able to share stories, experiences, and advice about destinations both past and present – creating lifelong friendships forged through a shared love for adventure. Altogether, these advantages make motorcycle camping an appealing option for travelers who want something more than just another vacation package or pre-planned trip itinerary – giving them an opportunity to craft their own unique journey every time they hit the road. 3) Foodie Tourism

outdoor travel trends for 2023

Foodie Tourism is another top travel trends for 2023 due to its unique focus on regional cuisines, local cultures, and the pleasure of experiencing a destination through its culinary offerings. In today's world, travelers are seeking more meaningful and immersive experiences that allow them to engage with a foreign culture in an authentic way. Foodie tourism provides this opportunity, allowing travelers to explore the food, flavors, and ingredients that make each destination special. The rise in curiosity among travelers of all ages has driven interest in food-focused travel experiences. Foodie tourists seek out restaurants, cafes, markets and sites known for their traditional cuisine or unusual dishes. They also love to sample local craft beers, wines and spirits. For them, it’s about discovering new flavors and experiencing different tastes as well as exploring a culture from an entirely new perspective – through its cuisine! In addition to the unique opportunity for discovering a region's culture through food, foodie tourism can also bring many other benefits to visitors. As food trails become more popular, it can create jobs within rural communities and help preserve traditional dishes from extinction due to globalization. Furthermore, it can also provide local businesses with additional income streams which helps support their growth and sustainability. Plus there are eco-friendly benefits such as reducing emissions by encouraging walkable culinary tours or using locally sourced ingredients which reduces packaging waste caused by importing goods from afar. Overall, Foodie Tourism is becoming increasingly popular because it offers travelers exciting opportunities to explore a destination's culture while providing economic advantages that benefit both visitors and locals alike. It's no wonder why Foodie Tourism is quickly becoming one of the most popular travel trends for 2023!

4) Kayaking

For starters, kayaking is an incredibly fun and engaging activity that provides both physical and mental stimulation. It's also an ideal way to explore new places while staying healthy and active. Kayakers of all levels can find satisfying challenges on the water, whether they're just starting out or already experienced. Furthermore, it can be done in virtually any body of water, including ocean waves, rivers and lakes, so there are plenty of places around the world offering a different kayaking experience. In addition to the physical benefits of kayaking, it also offers unique opportunities for exploration and discovery. While on the water, you can observe wildlife up close and enjoy beautiful views from a different perspective. You can also stop at shorelines or islands that are not easily accessible by land-based activities such as hiking for an even more immersive experience of the local environment. With its low cost and minimal gear required, kayaking is more readily available than other outdoor activities like skiing or snowboarding. All you need is access to waterways plus a boat and basic safety gear such as a lifejacket and helmet – both of which can often be rented at reasonable prices from local outfitters or marinas. The combination of convenience, affordability, access to remote areas and physical activity makes kayaking the perfect way to explore the outdoors in 2023. Not only will you have great memories when you’re done but you’ll also stay fit while having fun!

5) RV Camping or Travel

Many people are looking for ways to enjoy the great outdoors while ensuring their safety and comfort, and an RV provides that opportunity. RV camping offers a unique chance to experience nature without having to rough it, making it an ideal choice for those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In addition, RV camping eliminates the need to book hotels or other accommodations, which can often be expensive and time-consuming. Furthermore, with an RV, you can take your home with you no matter where you go, allowing you to explore new places in a more intimate way. Related: 5 Beginner Tips For RV Camping In Winter For those who prefer not to camp in tents or stay in hotels, RV camping is an excellent alternative that allows them to enjoy all the benefits of traditional camping with some additional amenities and modern comforts. RVs come equipped with kitchens, bathrooms and living areas that provide travelers with all the necessary amenities they need while on the road. Plus, RVs are equipped with beds and seating areas so campers can relax after a day of exploring. Moreover, most RVs are outfitted with air conditioning, heating options as well as power sources such as generators or solar panels providing campers plenty of creature comforts during their trip. Overall, RV camping combines all of the benefits of traditional camping without many of the drawbacks associated with other types of accommodation such as costs or lack of creature comforts. It's no wonder why this type of travel has become so popular over recent years and continues to be listed by many as one of the top travel trends for 2023! 6) Bikepacking

outdoor travel trends for 2023

Due to its blend of adventure, convenience, and sustainability, bikepacking has become one of the most popular travel trends for 2023. It offers an outdoor experience that combines the ruggedness of backpacking with the convenience of bike transport. As opposed to traditional backpacking, bikepackers can cover more distance at faster speeds while carrying less weight. This makes it perfect for people who want to explore distant places without having to walk and carry all their gear on their backs.

Related: Bikepacking Tips For Beginners | How to get started? Furthermore, bikepacking travels have a much lower impact on the environment than other modes of transportation. Bikepackers can easily avoid using fossil fuels because they don't need a car or plane to get around. In this way, they help reduce emissions and conserve energy resources, making it an ideal environmentally friendly activity for those seeking an outdoor adventure in 2023 and beyond. In addition to being environmentally conscious and convenient, bikepacking also has mental health benefits. Being out in nature helps riders clear their minds and take in the beauty of the world around them; it's an opportunity for introspection as well as exploration. For these reasons plus many more, bikepacking has become one of the most popular trends in travel for 2023 and beyond, offering travelers a unique combination of fun, freedom, and sustainability that can't be found elsewhere.

Top Day Trips from Moscow

No comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Entertainment , Travel , Video

Moscow , the sprawling historical, economic and cultural capital of Russia, home to 12 million people and countless museums, galleries, restaurants and parks, is certainly seeing a lot of action this summer.

With the FIFA World Cup in full swing, over 1 million fans from across the globe have poured into this iconic city, which is hosting a grand total of 12 World Cup matches this summer. Although there’s never been a better time to be in Moscow, the intense crowds and, of course, the infamous summer heat waves, can sometimes be a little too much.

The Russian capital is well connected to a huge variety of national parks, cities, villages and historic sites, meaning you’ve got no shortage of amazing options to escape the city and soak up the best of Russian culture. Here’s a round-up of the best day trips to take from Moscow.

The Archangelskoye Estate

Only an hour away on the train from central Moscow, the sprawling Archangelskoye is a heart-stopping masterpiece of old Russian splendour. Originally belonging to the notorious Golitsyn dynasty, this massive estate is one of the best-preserved showcases of Russian neoclassical architecture in the world, with the ornately curated gardens being home to multiple mansions, each with their own original and eclectic design.

As well as drinking in the beautiful surroundings in this serene oasis, the estate also plays host to many of Russia’s most acclaimed music festivals, so make sure to keep tabs on what’s on this summer.

If you’re looking for a little bit of city life without the manic hustle of Moscow, hop on the train for 90 minutes and you’ll find yourself in the vibrant city of Saransk , the historic capital of the Republic of Mordovia.

Long known for its vibrant cultural scene, you should make sure to hit up the Maly Theatre and of course, the official State Puppet Theatre, which has a long tradition of performing daring and hilarious puppet satires. You may even find yourself there with the World Cup, as this small city has hosted eight teams there this summer, including Portugal – a team who topped their group and progressed as 25/1 outsiders according to the bookmaker Betway .

The Mordovia Arena stadium, which is hosting all the games, is worth a visit in itself, given the surreal design and monumental scale of this sparkling new stadium. Also make sure to check out the imposing Regional Museum, just a stone’s throw away from the train station, to learn more about this tiny and tortured republic, as well as sampling the fare at the surprisingly good museum cafe.

This unique and ancient little town , just a few miles outside of Moscow (although it has no train station, you can get the train to nearby Vladimir and use public transport), is often described as somewhere completely untouched by time.

It is the physical embodiment of the mythical and much-idealized Russian vision of simple country life, a small village full of dirt roads, friendly locals and beautiful old churches. The town is also well-known for the local mead produced there, a highly alcoholic drink made of honey, so make sure to sample the local wares and get a little buzz going before you hit up the 13th-century monastery by the main river.

This is definitely the place to go if you want to get away from the international bubble of Moscow and experience a little bit of traditional Russia, and prices here are naturally several times lower for just about everything.

Gorki Leninskie

You can’t do Russia without exploring some of the Soviet history which left a permanent mark on the country and the world, and the best place to do so is the Gorki Lenenskie.

Just under an hour away from Moscow by train, this estate was where the Soviet leader Lenin lived out his final years, and it’s where you’ll find some striking examples of Soviet architecture , as well as a painstakingly detailed museum documenting this influential figure’s life, loves, achievements and dramas.

Most of the exhibits are in Russian, but this is still an important place to go to get a better picture of the monumental upheavals that Russia has experienced in the last century.

If you have any top tips for day trips from Moscow, let us know in the comments!

Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

turned-on chandelier on ceiling of moscow metro

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

BRICS ministers unveil travel enhancement roadmap, highlight Moscow-Delhi cooperation

M oscow: The BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) group of emerging-market nations, which expanded in January, to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia, unveiled a roadmap to boost travel between member countries at their inaugural tourism forum in Moscow over the weekend.

Hosted by Russia, this year's chair of BRICS, the forum featured a plenary session on "Prospects for BRICS Tourism Cooperation in New Conditions," led by Russian economic development minister Maxim Reshetnikov. The event marked the first thematic forum for BRICS, drawing over 300 leading experts, business leaders, and government representatives from member countries.

"Today, BRICS is a key platform for developing equal cooperation. The dialogue on payment systems is advancing between our countries, with new settlement mechanisms emerging," Reshetnikov said.

The BRICS group was established in 2009 and seen by analysts as a counter to the economic heft and political influence of the G7, comprising the US, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan.

Speaking with Hindustan Times at the forum, Evgeny Kozlov, first deputy head of the Moscow mayor's office, outlined the government's initiatives to boost Moscow as a global tourism destination, especially in the current economic climate.

Kozlov emphasised the focus on attracting Indian tourists, saying: “We're promoting Moscow and Russia in India, participating in major tourist exhibitions, and organising roadshows and familiarisation trips for professionals. We’re planning promotion programmes in key Indian cities and aiming to increase the number of direct flights to make travel cheaper.”

He highlighted the importance of communication, adding, “We need to talk more about Moscow—how safe, comfortable, and hospitable it is. Last year, 60,000 people from India visited Moscow, and we hope to increase that by 10% to 15% this year. We also have an e-visa system with India, making it easier and cheaper to visit Russia, which only takes five days to process.”

Kozlov noted the cooperation with the Russian government, stating, “Tourism is a team effort. We work with Russia's Ministry of International Affairs and the Ministry of Economic Development to prioritise our efforts and simplify regulations, making it easier for foreigners to visit Moscow, which is Russia’s main transportation hub and gateway.”

‘ Ongoing negotiations between Moscow-Delhi will lead to a new chapter’

Highlighting the evolving partnership between India and Russia, particularly in trade, investment, and technology transfer, Kozlov said: "You know, in discussions with my colleagues at both the Moscow and federal government levels, we've seen an increase in business tourism here. There's a lot in common within BRICS, and much more we can do to bring our countries closer together. While I can't predict exact trade volume increases, I believe the numerous ongoing negotiations between Moscow and Delhi will lead to a new chapter in BRICS cooperation.”.

“With the ministry of economic development, we have a new initiative planned: the BRICS Cities Touring Club. It's a big announcement. This club aims to promote city breaks within BRICS, which are now the second most popular travel choice after seaside vacations. We see huge potential for intra-BRICS city cooperation in tourism, inviting tourists to explore the unique hospitality and culture of each city.”

“We have full support from the ministries of economic development and international affairs in Russia for this initiative. I believe BRICS capitals and other cities will embrace this idea, lead to new online and possibly offline meetings in Moscow or elsewhere this year and shape a fresh vision for tourism development among BRICS cities”.

The forum's business programme included three sessions involving the BRICS business communities. The discussions focused on innovation, sustainability, digitalisation, and cooperation, forming the basis for future collaborative efforts.

At the event, Reshetnikov also highlighted Russia's tourism growth, anticipating over 90 million tourist visits this year—a 30% increase from pre-pandemic levels. Foreign tourism to Russia has surged, with a 50% rise in foreign visitors in the first four months of 2024.

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Two injured people were taken to hospital, he said.

He added that the extent of the damage in the attack was being assessed.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban had a seemingly lively chat ahead of a meeting of European leaders in Brussels today.

It's not known what that the two men discussed - but relations between Budapest and Kyiv have become more strained since the Russian invasion in 2022.

Hungary is Russia's closest ally in the EU and Mr Orban has maintained a friendship with Vladimir Putin while criticising the EU's strategy on Ukraine.

In December, Mr Orban blocked a €50bn aid package for Ukraine in a move that frustrated other EU leaders. He lifted the veto several months later.

Two people have been injured in a Russian drone attack on southern Ukraine, an official has said.

The Kherson regional administration said Russian forces launched an attack on the village of Novodmytrivka, leaving a 66-year-old man and 71-year-old woman hurt.

Both have blast injuries and have been taken to hospital for treatment, it said on Telegram.

The US, Israel and Ukraine are all in talks to provide Ukraine with up to eight Patriot air defence systems, according to the Financial Times.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly called for NATO members to send his country the US-made Patriot systems as it battles intensifying Russian attacks.

The FT said the deal would likely involve Israel first sending the systems it plans to retire to the US, before they are handed over to Kyiv.

Sources with knowledge of the negotiations told the paper the outlines of the deal have been discussed between ministers and senior officials from each of the three countries.

Mr Zelenskyy said in May that Kyiv urgently needed at least seven more Patriot missile systems to ward off Russian strikes against its power grid, civilian areas and military targets.

Pictures have emerged this evening of the aftermath of Russia's latest airstrike on the northeastern Ukrainian region of Kharkiv.

Emergency services said earlier that five people were injured and buildings were damaged in the attack (see 17.55 post).

Russian forces launched an assault on a new front in Kharkiv in May, after months of fighting focused on the east.

Ukrainian troops have repelled Russian forces from a neighbourhood in the frontline town of Chasiv Yar, a Ukrainian military official has said.

Nazar Voloshin, a spokesman for the Khortytsia operational-strategic group, told the Interfax-Ukraine news agency that Russian forces had been pushed out of the Kanal neighborhood in the east of the town.

Mr Voloshin claimed Moscow's forces were not slowing down in their push to break through in Chasiv Yar, and said two assault operations were ongoing.

"Ukrainian defenders reliably hold the defence in this area and give a decent rebuff to the Russian aggressor," he told the agency.

For context: Chasiv Yar, a strategically-important town in the eastern Donetsk region, has long been a Russian target.

It has been pummelled by Russian air, artillery and drone strikes for months now, as Moscow views the town as a gateway to launch direct offensives against several Ukrainian "fortress cities".

Chasiv Yar had a pre-war population of more than 12,000, but now only a few hundred residents remain.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged EU leaders to make good on their promises to provide his country with military aid after the bloc signed a security agreement underlining its support for Kyiv in the long term.

"Fulfilment of every promise is important, not only in terms of protecting lives but also to destroy the Russian illusion that they will achieve something by war," he said at the summit in Brussels today.

The Ukrainian president thanked countries that have so far promised equipment and arms aid, but pointed out that they were "needed urgently on the battlefield".

He also urged more help on "the urgent things - air defence, that is one".

The EU-Ukraine security agreement entrenches the EU's commitment to help Ukraine in nine areas of security and defence policy - including arms deliveries, military training, defence industry cooperation and demining,

In essence, it encapsulates what the 27-nation bloc has been doing for the country since the start of the war.

But the EU has made a specific commitment to the "predictable, efficient, sustainable and long-term provision of military equipment" for Ukraine.

Kyiv in return has promised to uphold European values and continue on its reform path in preparation to join the EU.

Five people have been injured in Russian airstrikes in Ukraine's northeastern Kharkiv region, according to emergency services.

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine said the strikes hit a residential area of the region, partially destroying one building and damaging others - including a school - as well as cars.

Crews at the scene said five people were hurt.

The windows and gates of the local fire station were also damaged, the emergency service said.

While the apparent gains made by Russia during its spring offensive in Kharkiv were the focus of much of the news coverage of the way in May, a new report indicates any progress made by Vladimir Putin's troops came at a significant cost.

According to UK and other Western intelligence agency sources cited by the New York Times, more than 1,000 Russian soldiers were injured or killed each day last month.

However, the newspaper also cites US officials as saying Moscow is continuing to recruit between 25,000 and 30,000 new soldiers a month - roughly as many as it is losing from the battlefield.

American officials told the outlet that Russia achieved a critical objective of Mr Putin in creating a buffer zone along the border to make it more difficult for the Ukrainians to strike into the country.

But, the Western officials said, this did not threaten Kharkiv and was ultimately stopped by Ukrainian forces.

Ukraine drones batter Moscow; Kremlin threatens 'tough retaliatory measures': Updates

Drone attacks on Moscow and Crimea battered buildings Monday and drew warnings of "tough retaliatory measures" from the Kremlin as the war dragged into its 18th month with little hope of a quick resolution.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said no injuries or serious destruction were reported, but photos from the scene showed a high-rise business center with burned-out top floors and a street-level store with its windows blown out. Russian media said one of the drones fell on the Komsomolsky highway in downtown Moscow, shattering the shops windows and damaging the roof of a house 200 yards from the Defense Ministry building.

Thick smoke was seen pouring out of the upper floors of the business center immediately after the pre-dawn strike, state media site Pravda reported.

The Russian Defense Ministry said the attack was thwarted by electronic warfare systems that forced the drones to crash. The Ukraine military did not publicly take responsibility for the attack, but a Ukraine defense official who declined to be named told Agence France-Presse the strike was a "special operation" carried out by Kyiv forces. Moscow is less than 300 miles from the Ukraine border.

Another drone struck an ammunition depot in Russian-annexed Crimea, forcing a halt in traffic on a major highway, Russian authorities said. Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova described the attacks as "acts of international terrorism." Russia has repeatedly struck energy and residential targets in Ukraine. The ministry issued a statement saying Russia "reserves the right to take tough retaliatory measures."

Developments:

◾ The U.S. will provide an additional $400 million in military aid to Ukraine, including munitions for advanced air defense systems and surveillance drones, according to officials who spoke Monday on condition of anonymity because the package has not been announced.

◾ President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine and its partners were preparing new Western military aid packages, including air defense equipment, artillery and long-range weapons.

◾ Ukraine may receive up to 50 of the F-16 fighter jets it has requested from Western allies, Viktor Bondarev, chairman of the Federation Council’s Defense and Security Committee, told Russia's state-run TASS news agency, warning of the impact the warplanes may have on the war.

◾ Russian attacks targeted nine regions and injured eight people over the past day, local officials reported Monday. The strikes included a continuation of Russian assaults on port infrastructure in southern Ukraine, this time on the Danube River, with the destruction of a grain hangar and storage for other cargo, Ukrainian officials said.

◾ Dylan Collins, an American video journalist working for Agence France-Presse, was injured by shrapnel from a drone attack while reporting at a Ukrainian artillery position near the eastern city of Bakhmut. Collins, 35, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, the agency said.

Russia to teach high school kids how to use combat drones

Russia's long-term commitment to using drones in military operations is underscored by a new program starting Sept. 1 to teach high school students how to operate combat drones, including how to confront such uncrewed aerial vehicles from the enemy.

At that same date, Russia is implementing a new, mandatory "Basics of Life Safety'' syllabus that trains high schoolers on hand grenade skills, assault rifle use and combat first aid. The British Defense Ministry said that's all part of the government's push to build support for its "special military operation'' in Ukraine.

"Russia's renewed emphasis on military induction for children is largely an effort to cultivate a culture of militarized patriotism rather than develop genuine capability,'' the ministry said in its latest intelligence update, noting that the Kremlin now considers drones "an enduring component of contemporary war.''

UN urges Russia to rejoin grain deal as options are explored

At the same time the United Nations is urging Russia to return to the Black Sea Grain Initiative, other avenues for exporting Ukraine's agricultural products are being explored.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appealed for Russia to reconsider its stance Monday, a week after it pulled out of an agreement that had allowed for the shipping of 33 million tons of Ukrainian foodstuff over the last year. “The most vulnerable will pay the highest price,’' Guterres said at the beginning of a three-day food summit in Rome.

Wheat prices have risen more than 14% and corn prices are up more than 10% since Russia quit the deal, arguing that its exports of grain and fertilizer had been hampered by Western sanctions, and that not enough Ukrainian grain had made it to the neediest countries. The Kremlin said it would return to the agreement when its demands are met "in their totality.''

Also Monday, Lithuania encouraged the European Union to use Baltic ports to ship the Ukrainian grain, saying they can "serve as a reliable alternative for transiting Ukrainian products, including cereals,'' and could transport up to 25 million tons a year, AFP reported.

None of the three Baltic nations shares a border with Ukraine. Transporting Ukrainian products through them, Danube River ports, rail or roads would be considerably more expensive than through the Black Sea.

Putin still wary of Wagner mercenary leader Prigozhin?

Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed his continuing concern over the potential threats that Wagner Group mercenaries and leader Yevgeny Prigozhin may pose during a meeting Sunday with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in St. Petersburg, the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War suggests in its l atest assessment of the war .

The assessment says Putin made several significant symbolic gestures during his meeting with Lukashenko, suggesting that Putin sought to "project power and confidence in his own supremacy" over Prigozhin, who led last month's brief, ill-fated march toward Moscow. The assessment adds that Putin made an "unusual effort" to take photographs with local Russians, including children.

"These symbolic gestures indicate that Putin is concerned about his perceived popularity, the security of his regime and the array of factions competing for power within the high echelons of Russian governance," the assessment says.

Medvedev calls for retaliatory strikes against Ukraine

Moscow should expand the targets for its retaliatory strikes in response to Kyiv's attacks on civilian facilities, Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev said Monday. Medvedev, in a Telegram post, said the latest strikes on Moscow and Crimea were acts of desperation by the Ukraine military prompted by what Medvedev described as Kyiv's failed counteroffensive and pressure from the West to show results.

"We need to choose nonstandard targets for our strikes, not just storage sites, energy hubs and oil bases," Medvedev wrote. "There are other places where nobody would be expecting us and where strikes would have a widely felt impact."

Years after Idaho college students were stabbed to death, judge eyes 2025 trial for suspect

It could be another year or more before a man accused in the stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students goes to trial

It could be another year or more before a man accused in the 2022 stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students goes to trial.

A judge and attorneys discussed Thursday starting Bryan Kohberger’s trial sometime in June 2025, nearly three years after the killings shocked the small university town.

Idaho Judge John Judge said he wants to set aside two weeks for jury selection, two months for the trial and two weeks at the end for sentencing and other matters if Kohberger is convicted.

“I think already we’re about 13 months from the arraignment, and I think at this point ... we’re getting to a point of diminishing returns,” Judge said after he sent a proposed schedule to attorneys last Friday.

Lawyers for both sides generally agreed with the schedule.

A motion to move the trial from Moscow, Idaho — the small college town where students were killed — was tabled until August. Kohberger’s attorneys fear publicity would prevent a fair trial in Latah County.

Kohberger, a former criminal justice student at Washington State University in nearby Pullman, Washington, faces four counts of murder in the deaths of Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves.

They were killed sometime in the early morning hours of Nov. 13, 2022, in a rental house not too far from the University of Idaho campus.

Police arrested Kohberger six weeks later at his parents’ home in Pennsylvania, where he was spending winter break.

Investigators said they linked Kohberger to the crime using DNA found on a knife sheath at the scene, surveillance videos and cellphone data .

Kohberger’s defense lawyers have said in court documents that he was out driving alone the night of the killings, something he did often. They also intend to call a witness in cellphone and cell tower data to show that the night of the deaths, he did not travel east of the main road connecting Pullman and Moscow.

Prosecutors said they will seek the death penalty if Kohberger is convicted.

Thiessen reported from Anchorage, Alaska.
