It used to be that posting cool travel pictures on Instagram was enough. People would enjoy the content, like and comment, and sometimes… even share.

That is (usually) no longer the case.

Great travel Instagram captions alongside great photos and videos are now a must-have.

However, not just any Instagram caption will cut it. You need the right “Nomadic Narratives” to take your content to the next level.

Here are the best tips and tricks for creating these types of narratives.

Using Emojis Effectively

Nomadic Narratives rely on emojis to bring out the emotions.

Emojis can transform multiple words and phrases and boil them down to a single symbol. This symbol represents your best feelings as you explore new countries and touch down in different destinations.

However, a word of warning.

Do not go overboard with emojis. Too many and you’ll lose people. If your viewers need to take time to figure out what you’re saying, chances are you’ve gone overboard.

The right dosage of emojis is the first key to building Nomadic Narratives.

Leveraging Trending Topics

Nomadic Narratives are all about trending topics. These topics grab people’s interest and, most importantly, cause them to stop scrolling their Instagram feeds.

The question then becomes, “what does a trending topic look like?”

The short answer is that it’s a popular topic that’s talked about by a large group of people.

This could be a new destination opening up, the start of the summer travel season, or even a specific food that locals have just discovered.

What’s important is that you find a way to combine your images and videos with the trending topic in your caption.

After all, you want your Nomadic Narratives to be relevant to your content.

Here’s a quick example.

Let’s take the “start of summer” as a trending topic. If you’re posting a picture of yourself at the beach, you could have a caption that says:

The best way to stay on top of this is to watch out for current events and then use them as inspiration.

You can also consider the 5W’s and 1H or narrative. The 5Ws are Who, What, Where, When, and Why. The 1H is How.

Tailoring Your Nomadic Narratives To Fit Your Audience

Finally, consider that your Nomadic Narratives are specific to your audience. There’s no point in having specialized captions that your audience can’t relate to.

Here’s an example scenario:

• you’re a travel agent
• catering to middle-aged people
• your audience wants to book a once-in-a-lifetime cruise around the Mediterranean.

Quite a specific target audience.

In this case, you can’t have Nomadic Narratives that say: “Hey, budget travelers, get ready for your backpacking adventure!”

This would not resonate with your audience (at all).

Instead, you want to have narratives like:

“Indulge in luxury travel with our exclusive cruise packages. Experience the world like never before with our top-notch amenities and personalized service.”

This shows you understand your audience’s wants and needs and can satisfy them.

This concept also applies to personal Instagram accounts. If you’re a 20-year-old traveling solo for the first time (and your audience resonates with this), don’t use captions that don’t align with your target audience.

A great caption might be:

Exploring the world one destination at a time on a shoestring budget! #travelonabudget

On the other hand, a bad one might be:

Jet-setting around the world in first class, living my best life. #blessed

There’s an obvious disconnect in the second example.

Just like meltdowns over misplaced backpacks and worries over what time the bus is actually supposed to show up, snapping a back-to-school picture of your kids to post on Instagram, Facebook — or even a video on TikTok — is a modern-day parenting tradition. Once you've got the perfect (or at least decent enough) shot, the only question is what to say about it on social media. I am forever obsessed with this beautiful travel quote–the longer and farther we travel, the more I appreciate just how smitten I am with this incredible world of ours.

“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page.” — St. Augustine

While this is one of the most famous travel quotes out there, it’s as controversial as it is inspiring: not everyone has the opportunity to travel, after all, and I certainly don’t believe that you  have  to travel to be a well-rounded person.

… That being said, for those of us lucky enough to have the opportunity, I do believe travel can enrich us and our knowledge of the world immeasurably.

The reality of travel–especially long-term travel like what we have been experiencing for nearly 5 years as of the time that I’m updating this travel quotes blog post–is often stressful and physically uncomfortable, but so far, it has always been worth it.

As much as I love this famous travel quote by Twain, I’ve always felt that it’s best appreciated when read with the following one by Michener:

“If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion, and ignore the people, you might better just stay home.” — James A. Michener

These two short travel quotes may have two entirely different takes on how travel can (or cannot) change you, but read together, to me they always add up to the idea that you get out of travel what you put into it–and I have always found that to be true in our own adventures around the world.

Li school districts sue social-media companies for ‘harm’ to adolescents: ‘record levels’ of mental issues.

Nearly a dozen Long Island school districts are suing social-media giants such as Facebook, TikTok and Snapchat, claiming the “addictive and dangerous” platforms cause mental-health woes in kids.

The schools — which say social media has led to “serious financial and resource disruptions” in their respective districts — want money to compensate for the cost of hiring mental-health professionals, changing lesson plans to teach kids about the dangers of social media and investigating online threats, according to Newsday.  

“They’re well aware of the harm they’re doing,” said William Shinoff, a California lawyer who represents about 1,000 districts nationwide and 37 on Long Island, to the outlet. “They’re doing nothing to stop it.”

The lawsuits are the newest in a wave of complaints that threaten to inundate the embattled companies, which have long been accused of not doing enough to protect kids from social media’s nefarious effects.

In October, New York Attorney General Letitia James and 32 other state attorneys general filed suits that claimed Meta, Facebook’s parent company, purposely installed addictive features on Facebook and Instagram to hook young kids on their products.

“Kids and teenagers are suffering from record levels of poor mental health, and social-media companies like Meta are to blame,” James said at the time, adding that Meta has “profited from children’s pain” and contributed to the youth mental-health crisis.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ administration filed a similar lawsuit in February  that accused Meta, Google and other companies of designing platforms that “purposefully manipulate and addict children and teens to social media applications.”

On Long Island, more than two dozen other districts plan to file lawsuits similar to those already lodged in California federal court, according to Shinoff.

The districts’ nearly-identical five-page complaints — which accuse the companies of being both negligent and a public nuisance — are part of a multidistrict federal lawsuit brought by parents, schools and state governments, Newsday said.

School officials claim they’re on the “front lines of redressing the damage” the companies’ algorithms cause when they target kids who are “uniquely susceptible to addictive features in digital products and highly vulnerable to the resulting harm,” according to the outlet.

The Long Island plaintiffs are school districts in Brentwood, Bellmore-Merrick, East Islip, Great Neck, Islip, Jericho, Kings Park, North Merrick, Port Jefferson, South Huntington and Westbury.

“We have seen things posted and how disruptive they are to the school environment,” Nicholas Ciappetta, president of the South Huntington Board of Education, told Newsday.

“We want social-media companies to take responsibility and to implement appropriate safeguards to ensure that they’re monitoring these types of things.”

Shinoff said schools also want social-media companies to beef up their age-verification processes and make it easier for parents and school officials to keep an eye on kids’ access.

“The amount of time that our kids spend on social media is of concern, and the information that’s available — some of the misinformation that’s available on social media — that concerns me,” Jericho Superintendent Hank Grishman said.

He added that he also wants to ban the companies from getting kids’ personal information or tracking their Internet activity.

On Sunday, a Google rep said in a statement that the allegations were “simply not true.

“Providing young people with a safer, healthier experience has always been core to our work,” the representative said. “In collaboration with youth, mental-health and parenting experts, we built services and policies to provide young people with age-appropriate experiences, and parents with robust controls.”

Representatives for the other companies did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Post.

But a Snapchat rep told Newsday that while the company will “always have more work to do, we feel good about the role Snapchat plays in helping close friends feel connected, happy and prepared as they face the many challenges of adolescence.”

TSSAA golf star Blades Brown no longer attending Brentwood Academy

Blades Brown , one of the nation’s top amateur golfers and a three-time defending TSSAA golf individual state champion, is no longer attending Brentwood Academy.

Brown, the No. 4 boys golfer in the class of 2026, will take online courses this year in order to make his golf schedule easier to manage, his mom, Rhonda, confirmed. He would have been a BA junior during the 2024-25 school year.

Brown, who made his PGA Tour debut in May and has a Callaway sponsorship, was on pace to become the first to win five consecutive TSSAA golf individual state championships. The three-time Division II-AA defending champion tied the state tournament two-day scoring record last fall, shooting a 6-under-par 66 at Sevierville Golf Club to finish at 14-under 130 for the tournament. That also helped lead BA to the team state title. 

He was also named The Tennessean's boys athlete of the year at the Middle Tennessee High School Sports Awards in June.

Brown’s golf career has expanded far beyond TSSAA competition, with a national schedule that includes some of the top tournaments amateurs can play. Last week, he won each of his matches to help the U.S. National Junior team defeat Australia in a friendly competition at SentryWorld in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. He is scheduled to play in the U.S. Amateur, the nation's top amateur event, at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota, in August.

Brown is No. 10 in the American Junior Golf Association rankings and No. 117 in the World Golf Amateur Rankings.

He made national headlines in 2023 by breaking Bobby Jones’ record as the youngest medalist ever in the U.S. Amateur. He tied for first place in the event’s stroke play portion, tying the Colorado Golf Club course record with an 8-under 64. He was eliminated later in the match play portion in the Round of 32.

That performance led to a sponsor exemption into the PGA Tour’s Myrtle Beach Classic at Dunes Golf and Beach Club in South Carolina. Brown shot rounds of 72, 67, 66 and 69 to finish the tournament at 10-under-par 274, tying for 26th place overall.
