Hiking pants are designed to move with you. They're outfitted with articulated knees, gusseted crotches, and stretchy fabrics that provide total freedom of mobility, whether you’re on a punishing ascent, rock-scrambling on a ridge line, or taking on a mellow trail in your favorite local park. Most boast sun protection and a weather-resistant DWR treatment on the outside to fend off moisture. Our favorites also wick sweat and employ durable fabrics that can stand up to the hazards of the trail.  And perhaps best of all, most hiking-specific pants work for all sorts of active outings (biking, fishing, bouldering, and rock climbing) while also passing off as a pair of casual pants suitable for errands, travel, and even work.

In total we evaluated 17 pairs of hiking pants, putting them to the test over the course of many hikes in a variety of different trail and weather conditions. We also spoke with Randy Schwartz, Senior Merchandising Manager at Marmot, about what to consider when looking for the perfect pair of pants.

Best Overall

Eddie bauer men's guide pro pants.

Eddie Bauer

Outfitted with two-way stretch, these pants provide an unencumbered athletic fit, DWR treatment to block out moisture and wind, and the perfect configuration of pockets.

In temps below 25 degrees Fahrenheit, you will likely want to wear a base layer.

Crafted from a mixture of nylon and spandex, the Guide Pro pant from Eddie Bauer won us over with its fit – loose but not baggy – and fabric – two-way stretch for total freedom of movement. The outer has been treated with a StormRepel DWR finish to block out moisture and the wind, and the pants were comfortable on both hot days and when temperatures dipped. Odor control has also been integrated into the fitted waistband to fend off foul smells, and UPF 50+ treatment protects you from the sun. We also liked the pocket configuration, which includes one with a zipper. They come in a variety of sizes in both standard and tall, with measurements that are by length and waist sizes, rather than the less-customized XS to XL sizing some other brands offer. After three months, the pants have held up nicely between frequent uses and washes.

The Details: Nylon, spandex | 30- to 44-inch waist; 30- to 36-inch inseam | 11.2 ounces | Water-resistant | UPF 50+

Columbia Silver Ridge Cargo Pants

Backcountry

Easy on the wallet, these pants work wonders in hot climates, with UPF protection, breathable and wicking fabrics, and plenty of pockets.

These are decidedly warm-weather hiking pants, and may not keep you comfortable even if you layer up on colder days.

Columbia’s Silver Ridge Cargo Pants fit true-to-size, with a modest amount of elastic at the waist that really lets the pants move with you mid-hike or rock scramble. They have an easy-to-adjust snap buckle and a nylon zipper that lies flat. Made from 100 percent ripstop nylon along with Omni-wick polyester mesh panels, the pants keep you dry when you start moving and are ideal for hot-weather hiking to keep you cool; these aren’t the go-to pair for winter forays. We wore them while walking the dog multiple times and foraging for mushrooms in the woods, and found no snags or signs of wear after three months.

And, as its name implies, the Silver Ridge Cargo Pants have loads of storage, including rear and hand pockets along with two thigh pockets, one with a velcro flap and the other with a secure horizontal zipper — but they don’t look like your standard over-baggy cargo pants, leaning instead toward a streamlined aesthetic that works well in urban environments. On the off chance that they wet out, the fabric dries quickly and also comes with UPF 50+ protection .

The Details : Nylon, polyester mesh | 30- to 44-inch waist; 30- to 36-inch inseam | UPF 50+

Best for Cold Weather

Du/er live free adventure pant.

With a classic aesthetic and loads of hiking-friendly features like stealth cargo pockets, ample stretch, and a DWR treatment, these pants excel in variable temperatures.

A bit of waist adjustment would be nice and finding the right fit may require some trial and error.

At first glance, the Duer Live Free Adventure Pants look like a standard pair of trousers, relaxed through the hip and thigh, and slimmer from the knee to the ankles. But Duer’s signature stretch fibers provide some of the most comfortable action-oriented pants out there, with covert zippered cargo pockets at the thigh, triple-stitched seams for durability, a gusset design for added range of movement, and adjustable snap cuffs. We did find that the waist ran a bit larger than average, so consider sizing down — the stretchy fabric should still provide a near-custom level of fit. A DWR treatment blocks out rain and wind and kept us well insulated on cold hikes — but while the fabric breathes well, they may be too thick for hot-weather outings, and given the bulk of the fabric is cotton, you wouldn’t want to sweat too much while wearing these pants. After three months and several hiking adventures, these pants have experienced minimal wear and tear.

The Details: Cotton, Tencel, Lycra, polyester, and spandex | 28- to 40-inch waist; 30- to 32-inch inseam | Water-resistant

Best for Warm Weather

Rab men's incline light pant.

Outfitted with generous stretch and breathability, these athletic-focused pants let you add extra venting by opening the YKK zippers at the hands, back, and thigh.

They fit a little tight around the thigh and don’t provide UPF protection.

Made with a single weave stretch Matrix fabric and constructed with articulated knees and a long-length gusset, the Rab Incline Light Pants are designed to move with you on both long-range treks an quick outings to the store. They have four zippered pockets — two at the hands, one rear, and a roomy thigh pocket — which can be opened up to improve breathability mid-stride. We loved the high-quality YKK zippers that are also found at the front, and fit proved to true to size, with belt loops for added versatility. The breathable fabric also dries quickly, though a DWR water-resistant treatment on the outside should keep things dry in everything save a deluge or stream crossings. There weren’t any noticeable scratches to the fabric after rigorous rock scrambling and equally enthusiastic outings with our dogs , even after three months of consistent use. The only slight? They run a bit tight at the thigh.

The Details: Single weave stretch matrix | 30- to 38-inch waist; 30- to 34-inch inseam | 8.4 ounces | Water-resistant

Best for Rain

Marmot men's precip eco full-zip pants.

Full-length zippers and an elastic waist make these rain pants easy to pull on when the weather turns foul, with full breathable-waterproof protection and zippered hand pockets.

A drawstring at the waist would’ve been a nice add-on feature.

Ideally suited to live in your day pack until the rain starts falling, Marmot’s PreCip Eco Full-zip Pants will keep you dry and comfortable when the storms roll in — perfect to take with you on an Icelandic adventure , for instance. They have full-length zippers on each leg, along with an elastic waist so that you can pull them over your footwear without dirtying them. Once you secure the zipper, which was still in brand-new condition after three months of use, bonded storm flaps provide full-length coverage. The pants breathe quite well thanks to the proprietary nylon fabric, but you can also add more breathability by adjusting the zippers a bit. Unlike other rain pants, these come with zippered hand pockets, which provide a great place to store must-haves like a smartphone without having to stick your hands into the pants to access your first layer. They're available in short, standard, and long lengths.

The Details: Recycled nylon | S to XXL | 12 ounces | Waterproof

Best Lightweight

Kuhl men's deceptr pants.

These pants have a lightweight stretch that doesn't feel cumbersome while hiking.

The leg pocket designed to hold a cell phone might be too narrow.

We loved how the tailored fit of the Kühl Deceptr Pants made them versatile enough to wear in an office setting without sacrificing the lightweight stretch performance essential to hiking. The ripstop fabrics — a mix of nylon, polyester, and spandex — proved plenty durable, knee articulation and a gusseted crotch further enhance the freedom of movement, and all the seams have been saddle-stitched to help cut down on weight. We did experience one snag several months into testing, but the quality has remained the same otherwise. Suitable for three-season hikes, it also comes with seven pockets, including a drop-in pocket and a narrow leg pocket that’s a bit too narrow to fit most smartphones. But that’s a minor issue, and it doesn’t inhibit the other trail-friendly features like DWR treatment to fend off moisture and full UPF protection.

The Details: Nylon, polyester, spandex | 28- to 42-inch waist; 30- to 32-inch inseam | 11 ounces | Water-resistant | UPF 50+

Travel + Leisure / Rachel Thalhuber

Best Convertible

Kuhl renegade convertible pants.

These provide the versatility of wearing pants or shorts, with the lower legs lined with vertical zippers to make it easy to get them over your hiking shoes or boots.

A little stretch in the waistband would be nice.

More sartorially-inclined hikers may not like the look of a pair of convertible pants because of the visible zipper line that appears just above the knee, but no one can argue with their versatility. Witness the Kühl Renegade Convertible Cargo, which boasts horizontal zippers that almost blend into the durable softshell fabric, with side zips on the lower legs to make it easy to change them from pants to shorts on the fly when the weather heats up. No more struggling to pull the legs over your hiking footwear. We also liked that the hem has a strap with a button and two snaps so you can adjust the opening width to match your shoes or boots.

Stretch fabrics let the pants move with you, the waistband wicks sweat, and the quick-drying fabrics boast both PDF and DWR protection. The cargo pockets — designed to store the legs when in shorts mode — are also nicely integrated into the thighs to cut down on bulk and bagginess. The pants also handled the wear and tear of the trail without issue. After several months of use, our only complaint is that the crotch area is a little roomy and can cause chafing. The pants themselves, however, have held up well.

The Details: Duralux nylon, spandex | 20- to 32-inch waist; 30- to 32-inch inseam | Water-resistant | UPF 50+

Travel + Leisure / Peterson Lars

Most Durable

Prana stretch zion ii pant.

These hiking-specific pants provide plenty of stretch and storage, but their streamlined aesthetic and durable fabrics make them a go-to for camping, traveling, rock scrambling, and urban exploration.

The waist doesn’t have any elastic or stretch, but an integrated buckle does help find a solid fit.

Constructed of Prana’s proprietary ReZion fabric (a mix of recycled nylon and five percent elastane), the Stretch Zion II Pants provide two-way stretch for ease of movement, with a DWR-treated outer that will stand up to scrapes and dings from rock scrambling , a feature that we found held up well after three months of testing. Twin snap buttons at the hem let you roll them up a bit and keep them secure, a nice feature if you’re doing a hike/bouldering mixed outing, and a ventilated inseam gusset helps with breathability (though on days in the 80s, they did prove to be a bit warm). Prana also gets the little details right, including an integrated adjustable belt (which we would like to feel a little more secure), a svelte left thigh pocket with two zippered entry points, a concealed zipper pocket with a key loop, mesh-lined hand pockets, and patch pockets on the rear, though we wish those back pockets had a way to secure things.

The Details: Nylon, elastane | 28- to 42-inch waist; 28- to 34-inch inseam | Water-resistant | UPF 50+

Most Comfortable

Rei men's co-op activator 3.0 pants.

Outfitted with a partially-elastic waistband, these pants provide a secure, comfortable fit, with loads of zipper pockets to haul all the day-hiking essentials.

It would be better if the back pockets had zippers for a more secure closure, and it doesn’t provide UPF protection.

Comfort should be a given in a pair of hiking pants, but REI Co-Op’s Activator 3.0 Pants take that requirement as its core principle. Made from water-resistant soft-shell fabric, the updated waistband includes partial elastic along with low-profile belt loops, which we found made the fit perfect, and the 11 percent spandex added ample stretch. Articulated knees and a center gusset provided total freedom of movement, and drawcords at the cuffs allow you to synch the pants down over your boots, or to roll them up securely for quick stream crossings. In addition to the DWR treatment, the pants are rated to block winds of up to 35 miles per hour, and they were plenty warm in colder temps — after several months of use, we're hesitant to wear them in hot weather. We also loved the pocket configuration, which includes two zippered hand pockets, a zip thigh pocket, and back pockets with hook-and-loop closures, though a zippered rear pocket would be nice.

The Details: Nylon, polyester, spandex | 30- to 44-inch waist; 32-inch inseam | 14.5 ounces | Water-resistant

Most Stylish

Royal robbins alpine road pant.

Royal Robbins

Designed with a twill exterior, these soft-shell pants are svelte and streamlined enough for any business-casual environment, with loads of trail-ready features.

Some elastic at the waist would make the fit ideal, and the mesh pockets would occasionally catch on our keys.

Designed with an athletic focus and a twill exterior, the Royal Robbins Alpine Road Pants are technical enough for long treks , but stylish enough to wear to the pub — a wrinkle-resistant feature assures that you can easily transition from the trail to your local watering hole without looking like you just logged a four-hour hike. The stretchy fabric is comfortable, durable, and quick-drying. Moisture never penetrated the pants even while hiking in — and shoveling — deep snow. Articulated knees and a gusseted crotch improve mobility, and the brushed interior of the waistband is soft against the skin, though a bit of elastic would’ve helped the overall fit.  We did love the pocket configuration, which includes a stealth zippered thigh pocket on the right leg that’s perfect to hold your smartphone, along with deep hand pockets. On occasion, our keys would get caught up in the mesh interiors of the front pockets. But if you live in a wet climate like Seattle, we suspect these pants will become your daily go-to.

The Details: Nylon, polyester, spandex | 30- to 46-inch waist; 30- to 34-inch inseam | 16.4 ounces | Water-resistant | UPF 50+

Most Versatile

L.l. bean men's water-resistant cresta hiking pants.

Capable of supporting all sorts of outdoor activities, these pants are stretchy, perfectly fit, and ultra-durable to fend off damages.

Despite the fact that it’s versatile enough to handle any activity, the aesthetic is firmly rooted in the active space.

Ready for the trail, the bike, the bar, or any other activity, L.L. Bean’s Water-resistant Cresta Hiking Pants are crafted with ultra-tough, lightweight fabric that’ll stand up to rigors of hiking, rock scrambling, and bush-whacking. Five percent spandex is integrated into the overall nylon fabric blend to provide two-way stretch, and the exterior boasts a water-resistant DWR finish. We found that they didn’t wrinkle easily, and UPF 50+ protection protects you from the sun. They probably can’t be worn solo on really cold days, but for three-season conditions, they’re stellar.

We did run into some issues with durability several months into testing, finding two small holes in different pockets with the pocket seams splitting from the pants. While not very noticeable, this has prevented us from using these pockets as small items might fall out. We like the versatile look and the light materials but wish they were more durable.

The Details: Nylon, spandex | 30- to 44-inch waist; 29- to 36-inch inseam | Water-resistant | UPF 50+

Best Flexibility

Mountain hardwear men's chockstone trail pant.

Mountain Hardware

A generous amount of elastane, a gusseted crotch, and a sewn-in drawstring provides near-custom level fit and full freedom of movement.

The nylon fabric does a decent job of blocking moisture, but a DWR treatment would be nice, and they do have a slight swishing sound.

The Mountain Hardwear Chockstone Trail Pants wear like a mix between traditional hiking pants, joggers, and lightweight travel pants. A generous addition of 12 percent elastane provides loads of stretch, and the sewn-in drawstring removes the need of a belt and provides a perfect adjustable fit. We also loved how the cuffs can be adjusted to tighten at the ankles for a more jogger-style fit. They proved to be warm enough for an overnight backpacking trip out in sub-freezing temps. You only get three pockets, two front hand pockets along with a zippered back pocket, so those who like to haul loads of gear may want more options. That aside, we were really impressed with the fabric’s durability and the overall flexible fit of the pants, even after three months of regular use while hiking, running errands, and general casual wear. They did a solid job of repelling moisture, though a DWR finish would’ve been a nice addition.

The Details: Nylon, elastane | 28- to 46-inch waist; 30- to 34-inch inseam | Water-resistant | UPF 50+

Other Hiking Pants We Liked

A few other hiking pants showed standout features but fell just short of being named among our best.

Coalatree Trailhead Pants : We liked that these could work well in warmer weather, and the stretch was a great feature, but they’d need layering in colder temps, and we didn’t love the drawstrings at the cuffs.

Eddie Bauer Rainier Hiking Pants : The Rainier Hiking Pants looked like a standard pair of chinos — which we loved — and the stretchiness was great for freedom of movement, but the velcro on the back pocket mostly got in the way and was a struggle to open, and the overall length was too long.

Nike ACG “Smith Summit” Men’s Cargo Pants : The convertible pants provided lots of versatility and the fabric was plenty sturdy, but the baggy design was a bit too big to wear anywhere other than on a trail.

Prana Brion Pants II : We did like the way that these pants fit like a casual pair of jeans, but there was no adjustment or stretch at the waist, they felt baggy in the thighs, and we yearned for at least one zippered pocket.

RevolutionRace Men’s Nordwand Pro Pants : Built to handle colder climates, these snow-pant-like pants include two mesh vents that line the outer seam of the legs, which made it easy to regulate our temperature mid-hike, but we found that the snap closures at the cuffs weren’t wide enough to fit over our hiking boots, and we really wish the pants had back pockets.

When we first received the pants, we examined the product to take note of the overall quality and craftsmanship, including how durable the zippers felt, how many custom features would allow versatility, how the crotch was constructed, whether or not there were double or triple seams, and how nicely the fabric felt against the skin.  And then we put them to the test on a series of multiple-hour-long hikes in a variety of terrain to see how well they provided protection, moved while hiking and rock scrambling, and provided practical pockets. We also wore them in more casual environments for longer durations, noting whether or not any of the features didn’t stand up to rigorous use or stretched out over time. This also allowed us to evaluate the pants’ wicking properties, breathability, and performance in a range of temperatures and trail conditions, noting how they could be used effectively in activities beyond hiking.

After each use, we washed the pants according to the manufacturer’s instructions to confirm whether or not cleaning the pants was easy, and if any of the fabric or hardware was affected.  After several weeks of detailed, real-life use, each pair of pants were evaluated on a one-to-five scale on key characteristics: fit, comfort, design, durability, and value.

Tips for Buying Hiking Pants

Choose durable materials.

“Material choices are always considered in hiking pants with durability being a leading factor,”  says Randy Schwartz, Senior Merchandising Manager at Marmot said. “For example, a nylon is often more durable than a polyester.  There are also specialized materials with superior durability ratings, for example, Cordura, which gets used more in pants for specialized activities like mountaineering and climbing." If you plan on rock scrambling, be sure you get a pair of pants that’s super-durable and stretchy so you can move freely without concerns of damaging abrasions, such as a sturdy pair of men's joggers .

Consider your hiking weather and environment

"The three most important factors are breathability, durability, and feature set,” says Schwartz. “The ultimate hiking pants provide the versatility to give you all the best of these elements when you need them.  If you are hiking in a colder environment, breathability matters less. If you are hiking on paved roads, durability matters less."  If you anticipate rain , go with a pair of pants that’s treated with DWR, which forces the water to bead on the fabric and not soak in – and if foul weather is downright guaranteed, consider a waterproof/breathable hard shell pair of pants.

Look at design elements for a comfortable fit

"The main design features to consider are the actual fit, the stretch of the material, pocket placement, types of stitching/construction, and waist/hem design,” says Schwartz. “Features like scuff guards, stitch placement, gussets, boot fit, and even repairability become much more pertinent."

Schwartz recommends pants that are roomy enough to be comfortable but slim enough to move around without feeling bogged down. Look for pants that have a bit of stretch, which affords a more streamlined aesthetic that cuts down on excess fabric, reducing the weight as well as the chances of the pants getting caught on a wayward tree branch or rock.

Frequently Asked Questions

"Like a jacket, there is never going to be one pair of hiking pants that is meant to be used anywhere at any time,” says Schwartz. But you should still consider buying a pair of hiking pants, rather than wearing jeans or a pair of cotton pants because, when cotton gets wet, it won’t keep you warm, it’ll weigh you down, and it will take forever to dry. Hiking-specific pants also deliver more stretch, breathability, and durability than your standard pair of pants, with pockets strategically placed for easy access, along with a gusseted crotch and articulated knees so that they move with you. They may have additional features like scuff guards, triple-stitched seams, boot/gaiter integration, and snaps or drawcords that let you roll up your pant legs to secure them if you venture into shallow water or want to execute some bouldering moves.

The ideal length of hiking pants will depend on a few factors, including the environment, weather conditions, and personal preference. Full-length pants are a good choice for most hikes because they offer better protection against elements like wind, sun, bugs, and vegetation. However, full-length pants may be too hot for some hiking conditions . Convertible pants are a smart option because they can convert between full-length pants and shorts as needed.

Any article of clothing that claims to be “ perfect for travel ” has an agenda. Like the word “natural” appearing on packaged food, a phrase like “ travel-ready ” is a vague and enticing smokescreen that can signify any number of qualities at the heart of which lies the question: What makes this thing better for wearing in places other than the place where I live?

Pose the inquiry to any given bag , apparel , tech or footwear brand, and the response might mention a tech-y fabric or maybe a modular feature (or nothing unique whatsoever). The riddle is particularly true of pants. What makes a good pair of travel pants? Is it comfort? Durability? The number of pockets? All those elements matter, yes, provided they add up to a blend of form and function that lets you step off a plane and onto all sorts of adventures. In their own ways, the following options each fit the bill.

style

Best Overall Travel Pant : Flint and Tinder 365 Pant

  • $98.00 at Huckberry
  • Plenty of colorways to choose from
  • Not a ton of extra storage

There’s a reason these are some of the most popular pants on the internet: the 365 Pant combines the style of a jean with the comfort of a chino, with a little stretch added into the mix. Made with an 8-ounce blended cotton and spandex fabric, the 365 Pant comes in a massive variety of colorways and three cuts — slim, straight and tapered — so you don’t have to compromise your personal style to attain all-day comfort.

Foehn-Pants-Gear-Patrol-Lead-Full

  • $160.00 at wearfoehn.com
  • Great articulation and moisture-wicking properties
  • Too comfortable to take off

Our former Outdoors & Fitness staff writer was kind of obsessed with the original Brise pants , and their successors are even better. Stretchy, moisture-wicking Schoeller fabric and a DWR finish keep them dry, while a stretch waistband and cuff, knee articulation and a crotch gusset keep them comfortable, whether you’re hanging on a rock face or standing in a security line. The zippered thigh pocket, which Foehn made to provide access to items while wearing a climbing harness, is ideal for stashing a passport. The looks pass muster as an everyday work pant, whether your office is indoors or out.

a pair of grey pants

  • $100.00 at REI
  • Affordable and durable
  • Not the most stylish pants in existence

Some of the simplest and lightest pants on this list also happen to be some of the more quietly technical ones. REI made the Activator pants with a stretchy but tough, nylon/spandex blend fabric that repels water, wicks moisture and dries quickly, so they’re ideal for any trips that include outdoor activities like hiking and climbing. Activity-friendly features include a crotch gusset, articulated knees and a zippered thigh pocket for travel or trail essentials. It all adds up to a heck of a lot of value for less than one hundred bucks.

a pair of black pants

  • $53.00 at florencemarinex.com $75.00 (30% off)
  • Lightweight and durable
  • On the pricier side

Tested in the mountains of O’ahu, the F1 Expedition Utility Pant is built to perform in extreme outdoor environments, while remaining comfortable enough for long travel days. Featuring 4-way stretch mini ripstop fabric, an adjustable grosgrain nylon webbing belt and zippered front pockets built to keep valuables in place, this rugged option is ideal for adventurous travelers who don’t want to have to worry if their apparel can keep up with their intrepid spirit.

Western Rise AT Slim Pant

Best Workwear Travel Pant: Western Rise AT Slim Pant

  • $128.00 at westernrise.com
  • Tough as nails
  • A slimmer fit than some will want

We’ve been fans of Colorado-based Western Rise’s versatile everyday pant for some time now. “I own — and constantly wear — two pairs of these suckers,” one of our staffers once wrote . “The fit is excellent, like modern chinos or jeans. The colors are just unique enough to stand out. But what I like most is how tough they are.” Stretch nylon and air-texturized fibers make them feel like regular pants while repelling water, drying quickly… and leaning strongly into a style appropriate for modern workplaces, making them perfect for stepping off a plane and into, say, your company’s Amsterdam office.

Patagonia Twill Traveler Pant

Most Comfortable Travel Pant: Patagonia Twill Traveler Pant

  • $129.00 at Patagonia
  • Superior comfort for long travel days
  • Not super stylish

These unassuming Patagonia pants are sneakily packed with features that boost both comfort and functionality. The organic cotton/polyester blend fabric is light and moisture-wicking, with a water-resistance finish that rides out the raindrops. A drawstring waistband and jogger-esque ankle cuffs add to a relaxed fit suitable for everything from a plane ride to a journey through the jungle — concrete or otherwise. Meanwhile, four traditional pockets plus a zippered thigh pocket keep the things you need, like wallet, keys and phone, within easy reach.

Roark-Revival-Layover-Pant-Gear-Patrol

  • $95.00 at roark.com
  • Stretchy and adjustable
  • Limited colorways

Roark’s entire brand is travel; each of the company’s seasonal collections emerges from trips to places like Jamaica, the Falkland Islands and Hong Kong. Inspired by Morocco, the Layover 2.0 Travel Pant is made of a blended nylon and cotton fabric that’s stretchy and fastens with a drawstring instead of a button for a slightly adjustable fit. Its front pockets have oversized, zip openings to accommodate larger essentials like travel documents or sunglasses, while the back pockets button shut, leaving you with plenty of reliable, secure storage options when you’re on the go.

a pair of jeans

  • $140.00 at Arc'teryx
  • Stylish and capable
  • Sizing can run a little big; try before you buy, if you can

If your travel schedule is tight and you need a pant that can transition from one activity to the next with style and capability, consider this option from Arc’teryx. New for 2022, the Levon combines technical functionality with urban styling, making it the ideal pant to throw on for on-the-go fun. Five pockets provide plenty of storage, and the nylon dobby material isn’t just hard-working and soft — it’s also bluesign approved, and is covered with a PFC-free DWR.

686 Anything Cargo Pant

Best Cargo-Style Travel Pant: 686 Anything Cargo Pant

  • $130.00 at 686.com
  • Storage galore
  • Cargo style is off-putting to some

“Cargo pant” might have you thinking about thigh-mounted square pockets with flapping lids, but for these pants, all it means is that they have room to carry a lot of stuff. There are the two front pockets, a card pocket, pen pocket, zippered leg pockets, phone pocket, belt loop stash pocket and, oh yeah, two back pockets. Even with all that storage though, the Anything Multi Cargo Pants don’t appear bulky. They’re made of a stretchy, water-resistant fabric that’s fine to hike in but doesn’t look overtly technical.

Best Travel Pants for Backpackers • Top Picks for Men & Women (2024)

Quick Answer: These are the Best Travel Pants of 2024

Important features in travel pants, top 10 best travel pants in 2024, how we tested this gear, faq about the best travel pants, #1 rei co-op sahara convertible pants – most versatile and overall best travel pants for men, #2 prana brion pants – best casual travel pants for men, #3 prana halle pants – best travel “jeans” for women, #4 kuhl radikl pants – best travel pants for men (runner-up), #5 prana blazing star leggings – best leggings for travel, #6 icebreaker 260 tech base (merino wool) – best travel pants for the cold for men, #7 smartwool merino wool (150 weight).

What differentiates travel pants from “regular” pants? For one, your suitcase and travel backpack have much less room than your closet, so every ounce and inch of space counts!

You need to be efficient with your limited space, and the last thing you want to do is lug around a pair of pants you don’t even wear until your last night!

1. Versatility – Why you should NOT pack jeans (and when you should)

Unless you are just going on a weekend trip to a temperate place, jeans are probably a bad choice. They can be uncomfortable on long flights, yet take up a ton of space in your bag. They get sticky in hot, humid weather, don’t keep you warm, and suck to hike in (especially for women).

I only bring jeans on weekend city trips or trips where I am staying put (not lugging around my bag from hostel to hostel). Generally, jeans are just not versatile enough to make the list of my packing essentials!

Versatility means you can wear your pants every day and not get sick of them. I like to stick to 2, maybe 3, pants for my travels. This means I need travel pants that can be worn in the scorching afternoon heat and then cool nights.

It also means I need travel pants that I can practice morning yoga in, walk around town, and then go on multi-day treks with!

If you travel like me – multiple cities or countries doing multiple activities – then versatility should be your number one priority, closely followed by comfort.

It pays to invest in quality travel pants that perform in a variety of different situations. I have a pair of awesome travel pants that double as hiking, work out, and pajama pants, yet are conspicuous enough to wear during the day.

2. Comfort – Especially for those Long Flights

Generally, choose lightweight and/or stretchy material for versatility and comfort. When you’re traveling, comfort is of the utmost importance.

I can’t tell you how many times I packed pants, dresses, and shirts – you name it – solely for fashion and then never ended up wearing them! When you’re packing for your trip in your comfortable AC room, think about how it will feel to wear said pants in 100 degrees (40 c) humidity sandwiched between skyscrapers or searching for a spot in the sand.

There are some excellent trousers and pants that are soft and stretchy, but still stylish and form fitting.

Choose pants with breathability that will give you a better range of motion, especially if you plan to go on a hike, or visit places where the temperatures can range from scorching hot in the afternoon to freezing as soon as the sun has set.

On the other hand, you’ll want to bring some warm travel pants for cold weather. I’m a big fan of merino wool base layer everything. It’s expensive (and took me a long time to fully convert to), but I promise it is absolutely worth it.

3. Wrinkle-Resistant Travel Pants

It doesn’t matter how cute your pants are if they are prone to wrinkles and stuffed in your travel backpack !

4. Quick-Drying Pants and Easy to Wash

Not to keep hating on jeans, but they take forever  to dry, and most places, my Americans, hang dry their clothes (even Europe). Unless you want to wait literal days for your laundry, pack quick-drying material!

Trust me, if you’re traveling for longer than a week, you want to wear travel pants that are quick to dry!

Many pants offer water-resistant or quick-drying properties, so you can stay comfortable and dry in less than desirable weather. I generally look for nylon or merino wool blends.

And on that note, pack travel pants (and clothes in general) that are easy to wash! You don’t want to deal with dry cleaning or ironing clothes on the road. It’s simply a waste of time and money, unless you’re on a business trip, of course.

5. Pockets and Security

Don’t forget about the power of pockets, especially my ladies! You want to make sure your travel pants have pockets. If you can check for horizontal pockets because things tend to fall out of vertical cut pockets when you sit down.

Security pockets are an added bonus for regions with higher chances of pickpocketing. Usually, zippers will do just fine here.

Craghopper convertible travel pants

Technical clothing doesn’t have to be hideous. The best travel pants on the market right now are not only comfortable they are trendy — designed and tailored for heels and flats or cute athleisure. Whatever floats your boat.

There is no shortage of high-quality travel pants that you’ll actually love wearing, it’s just about finding the right price point for you.

6. Practicality

I don’t think you have to give up style to travel, but it is worth being practical. Unless you’re an Instagram diva traveling with four hard case suitcases, you should probably stick to stylish practicality versus the most forward fashion trends.

You’ve waited long enough, my friends. Below is a list of the best travel pants! Some are uni-sex (or can be if you want), and others specifically travel pants for women and travel pants for men.

#1 Most Versatile and Best Travel Pants for Men – REI Co-op Sahara Convertible Pants

rei travel pants

Made for travelers, REI tick off all the essentials: they’re comfortable, lightweight, and quick drying, but we’re calling these the best travel pants because of their pure versatility since they can convert from trousers to shorts and back again for hiking and travel.

Moreover, these pants are constructed with tons of useful pockets for travel, and the ability to reduce sweat and keep bugs away – three things every backpacker needs.

I like choosing outdoor-focused travel pants for quality and durability and REI is a trusted brand. REI stand out from other convertible pants because of its Insect Shield technology, which repels mosquitoes, ants, flies, chiggers, midges, and ticks.

They’re the ultimate adventure travel pants.

The only drawback is that these pants do run small, so best to order a size up. On the other hand, these REI pants are slim-cut, a nice feature when you’re sporting them in the concrete jungle versus the actual jungle.

#2 Best Casual Travel Pants for Men – PrAna Brion Pants

best travel pants for men

While Craghoppers are the best travel pants for adventurous travelers, the Prana Brion Pants are excellent for the casual traveler. PrAna is one of my favorite companies, as they primarily make eco-conscious clothes for climbing and yoga.

With the Brion pants, they’re keeping it fashion-forward yet sensible with these straight-legged pants.

They’re made from nylon and spandex, so they’re stretchy and comfortable, but with the look of traditional jeans. The PrAna Brion’s best feature is its water-repelling technology. They include five pockets and come in a variety of colors too.

I personally think these Brion pants are among the best men’s travel pants for long flights and leisurely travel, while still performing well on all your hikes and climbing endeavors.

#4 Best Travel “Jeans” for Women – PrAna Halle Pants

best travel pants for women

Like the Brion’s above, PrAna has designed these travel pants for women to be comfortable, yet form-fitting and casual enough to not scream, “I’m a traveler!”

Pants like the Harem Pants are great for backpacking around Asia, as well as some of the best pants for traveling Europe.

That said, the durable Zion fabric offers comfortable 2-way stretch and dries quickly due to its water-resistant, Durable Water Repellent finish. This means these are great travel pants to take to a rainy destination.

These pants were designed to take out on a casual day hike or climb but also head to drinks or a meeting. Versatility, check. Comfort, check. Easy to wash and pack, check. Durability, double check.

The only downside to these pants are the pockets. They are a bit small, and so things don’t fit in them (any better than in jean pockets, really). That said, it’s a small price to pay for such easy-to-use pants; take these to the city or out to the desert for bouldering. Not many pants can do that.

#5 Best Travel Pants for Men (Runner-Up) – Kuhl Radikl Pants

travel pants for Men: kulh free radikl

The Kuhl Radikl Pants are another excellent pair of technical travel pants for men. Their Enduro fabric and abrasion-resistant materials are both durable and comfortable.

This pair of Kuhl travel pants also features 7 pockets, which may seem like overkill, but the phone pockets are placed pretty intuitively. These pants are great for travel because they are conspicuous enough to wear day to day, but comfortable enough to wear on long flights and out for a hike. Plus, they’re affordable and currently under $109. So durable, functional, and comfortable pants under $109? Count me in.

#6 Best Leggings for Travel – PrAna Blazing Star Leggings

Prana momento best leggings for travel

PrAna is at it again! I am a big fan of PrAna because they are an environmentally conscious and fair-trade brand that makes sustainable and functional yoga, climbing, and travel clothing.

They often use organic cotton and hemp materials for their clothes. This pair of leggings, in particular, is constructed from a lightweight recycled nylon blend.

In some circumstances, leggings can be inappropriate or too tight for travel, but most of the time, I pack at least one pair of leggings as my go-to pair of travel pants for long flights and yoga/workout wear.

My sister owns this exact pair of leggings and can attest to their soft and comfortable nature. I like that they have mesh inset panels at the lower leg, both for breathability and style. The only downside is that mesh isn’t as durable. Still, my sister has yet to report any snags or holes!

#7 Best Travel Pants for the Cold for Men – Icebreaker 260 Tech Base (Merino Wool)

best merino wool base layers for men: icebreker leggings

If you are traveling somewhere cold or plan to hike in the mountains, then merino wool will be one of the best pair of “travel pants” you buy! These leggings are a base layer, meaning you will probably wear them under one of the pair of pants above for insulation.

If you’re unfamiliar with merino wool material, it is one of the best insulating and breathable fabrics you can buy. Plus, it resists odor really well when compared to cotton and other organic materials, which means less washes!

The only downside to merino wool is its price. It took me a while to even invest in merino wool socks… but now that I have it’s pretty difficult to wear anything else, especially when I’m walking around a city all day everyday.

Merino wool travel leggings are especially useful for trekking trips where you will be an active day in and day out. You can wear merino wool comfortable in the summer as well as use it as an insulating base layer in the winter.

This pair in particular is midweight, meaning they are heavier and meant for colder weather. You can also get a lightweight pair if you run hot.

The Icebreaker 260 Tech Base leggings are a slim fit with an elastic waistband. This pair is 100% merino wool (not just a blend) so it’s the utmost quality. They even have a contoured pouch with a functional fly, boys.

I’m a big fan of Icebreaker because of their warranty. They should replace these if they ever get a hole or fail on you.

#8 Best Travel Pants for the Cold for Women – Smartwool Merino Wool (150 Weight)

best base layers for travel for women: smartwool

Smartwool is another great company for merino wool base layers! Smartwool leggings personally fit me better than Icebreaker, but I suggest trying on multiple brands to see which fit is right for you.

These are a bit lighterweight than the ones above and they’re great for using as a base layer to keep the chill away. You can even use them under the Harem pants!

As I mentioned above, I really believe it is worth investing in a bit of merino wool for travel if you will be outdoors or in the cold for a significant amount of time.

These pants are just about perfect – durable, warm, and a great length. My only complaint is the waistband can feel a bit tight at times, especially when I go back for rice and dahl seconds. That said, I have come across this weird waistband with most base layers. It is what it is. They are not going to fit the same way as yoga pants.

At 150, they are also a tad sheer, so I don’t recommend wearing them solo. Check out the 200 weight too!

Now, you  could spend a fat chunk of $$$ on the WRONG present for someone. Wrong size hiking boots, wrong fit backpack, wrong shape sleeping bag… As any adventurer will tell you, gear is a personal choice.

So give the adventurer in your life the gift of convenience: buy them an REI Co-op gift card!  REI is The Broke Backpacker’s retailer of choice for ALL things outdoors, and an REI gift card is the perfect present you can buy from them. And then you won’t have to keep the receipt. 😉

There is no perfect or exact science when it comes to testing out travel and outdoor gear. Especially with travel pants, it’s definitely about finding what works best for you and your needs. Nevertheless, the team here at The Broke Backpacker has a LOT of experience in this area and we’ve gotten rather good at it over the years, if we may say so ourselves.

Whenever we test a piece of gear, one of our team takes it out for a spin and puts it through its paces. In all cases, we pay close attention to how well-made a piece of gear is, how heavy or light it is, how packable it is, and of course, how well it fulfills its primary purpose.

Finally, we also take into account how an item is priced – for example, expensive items that perform averagely will lose points, whereas budget items may be given more leeway and minor failures taken with a grain of salt.

Still have some questions? No problem! We’ve listed and answered the most commonly asked questions below. Here’s what people usually want to know:

What are the best pants to wear on an airplane?

Having comfortable pants on an airplane can be a lifesaver. We highly recommend getting a pair of harem pants. They’re loose, they allow room for activity and they’ll let everyone know that you’re taking the travelling business very seriously.

What should you look for in a good pair of travel pants?

These are the things you should be looking for: 1. Versatility, practicality and comfort 2. Wrinkle-resistant if this is important to you 3. Quick-dry and easy to wash 4. Fit, Pockets and Style

What are travel pants made of?

Travel pants are usually made from nylon or polyester or a blend of the two. That ensures enough stretch to be active throughout the day without any fabric limitations.

What are the most comfortable travel pants?

The most comfortable travel pants will always be Harem pants . Their loose nature means you can wear these around conservative countries or places you don’t want to draw attention to your legs, while also have plenty of room to move.

Many of them are well suited for adventure, but there's one pair of convertible trail pants in particular that's taking the sale by storm now that it's under $60.

REI’s Sahara Convertible Pants are now on sale for just $56—a 30% discount on the normal $80 price. With over 300 five-star ratings, they’re a top 20 bestselling product out of the 10,000-plus deals of the Anniversary Sale . REI Co-op Sahara Convertible Pants in Asphalt, $56 (was $80) at REI

That’s why this pair from REI Co-op is so handy, with a convenient zip above the knee to turn the pants into shorts. In addition to the horizontal zipper, the cleverly designed trousers also have a zipper along the outseam, making it much easier to take off without having to remove your shoes. The pants are also loaded with storage, including cargo patch pockets at the thighs and zippered compartments for security.

Shoppers appreciated the Sahara Convertible Pants' utility on the trails, particularly calling out the outseam zipper. “Excellent for hiking,” one shopper said. “The pant legs are the best part. They have another zipper running vertically along the entire pant leg that allows you to open them completely up. You can leave your hiking boots on and take them off or put them back on easily. I used to have to sit down, take my boots off, take my pant legs off, lace my boots back up, and keep going. Not with these.”

Another called them, “Versatile, lightweight, and very packable,” adding “I have a pair in every color. The only pants I take with me when traveling.” Similarly, another shopper called them “rugged and versatile,” and said, “I have used it on multiple hikes in hot weather. The convertible features help a lot to cool down.”

A pair of convertible hiking pants is convenient, whether you’re on a quick day hike or a multi-day excursion. After thorough hands-on testing, our editors have reviewed the 18 best men's travel pants below, including notes on their specs, performance, comfort, and any cons we found. When showing up in sweatpants or joggers won’t do, and wearing chinos or jeans on a long trek leaves your lower half feeling suffocated, these best men's travel pants will save the day.

This slim-fit travel trouser has all the hallmarks of your go-to office chinos but with twice the functionality and comfiness factors. Really, a chino that moves like a jogger but looks like a pair of grown-up pants is no wonder Everlane's hero item. And this was in fact handpicked to be tested by our Fashion Director Ted Stafford and then fitted on Bullet Train action star Andrew Koji . Why? Because it will move you from the tarmac to the resort without losing a second of relaxation, courtesy of the spandex four-way stretch that we found was so movement-friendly that we were able to squat and even jog a bit in them with ease. Coupled with a business-casual veneer, these chinos won us over with a versatility that's perfect for traveling, working in the office, or going about your everyday life in a chino style.

After testing it out by wearing these chinos to the office and to travel by flight, our favorite part of Everlane's performance chinos is its sweat-wicking and quick-drying capabilities. I even wore them on hot summer days to stroll under the sun, and the fabric was able to keep my legs feeling cool and dry. Lastly, although the fit leans slim, it hasn’t stifled or smothered the beefy thighs of our testers.

What Do Experts Say? " Everlane’s chino is comfortable to wear for all-day work, parties, or formal events. Plus, it is made from four-way stretchable fabric that prevents it from wear and tear. It is also considered to be a technical pant option because of its sweat-wicking and quick-drying features ," says Susan Gagnon, designer at Costumes Heaven .

Having thoroughly tested Lululemon's ABC pants, we found them to be the comfiest pants to stay classy in our everyday life. Really, its comfort is second to none: with sweat-wicking, quick-drying fabric, amplified four-way stretch, wrinkle resistance, and a comfortable ABC (Anti-Ball Crushing) design, the athleisure brand has managed to infuse its activewear innovation into a classic pant style geared toward everyday life.

Even though they’re partially made with polyester (which isn’t a breathable or stretchy fabric), the main material, called Elastomultiester, comes to save the day. In my experience wearing these, the fabric breathes and wicks away sweat like a beast, and the four-way stretch has made them my go-to pants for commuting to work in the summer. My favorite part is also how light and soft the fabric feels, which is why I always make sure to pack a pair of ABCs for when I’m flying away for a few days.

In fact, I was able to wear these pants multiple days in a row after owning them since 2020, and their stretchy performance has never let me down once. My favorite part about these pants is the anti-ball-crushing tech which I tested out to be a gusset at the crotch and thigh areas that helps relieve tension while walking. Style-wise, while the ABC looks more casual than regular chinos since it's made without cotton, meaning no-brainer versatility as summer pants, spring pants, khaki pants, travel pants, office pants, casual pants... You get the gist.

All in all, Lululemon's ABC pants are what guys have always hoped to find in their everyday slacks, giving you unrestrictive movement and all-day comfort without compromising on an elevated style.

Since launching in 2013, Vuori has been producing versatile pants that you can wear practically anywhere. Case in point: their elastic waist Ripstop pant, which features a modern slim cut and super soft fabric that's perfect for working from home, or trekking to the airport.

Created using Vuori’s Dura Terra ripstop fabric that features a two-way stretch, we found in our testing that these lightweight travel pants with a 33-inch inseam are issued with a gusset for extra roominess too. Their modern and straight-fit cut has let me dress them up or down as I pleased. We also found it to be quite breathable and work well as summer pants.

These pants also have the same tapered style that our testers love, but offer more room to move around despite being a slim fit. The cotton and elastane fabric is lightweight and breathable, and has helped our testers remain comfortable even while being in hot weather for hours. However, the real star is the brand's DuraTerra™ tech in the fabric: a material for active guys that can be sported all day long, for all sorts of activities, thanks to its two-way stretch flexibility, durability, strength, and stain resistance. Hence, our testers have even worn these Vuori pants to hike and bike besides just commuting and running errands.

Not only is this one of the best summer pants we’ve ever tested, but it’s also one of the most versatile and rugged travel pants we’ve tried. Our gear editor, John Thompson, even sported these as hiking pants to the great outdoors to test them and came back singing more than a few praises. Firstly, they’re made of nylon, and one thing about nylon is that it’s going to perform: really, the lightweight activewear fabric is breathable, moisture-wicking, quick-drying, and has a light natural stretch that is now enhanced with 6% of spandex in these pants. Basically, these pants have ventilation and quick-drying in spades.

Let’s talk more about that stretch: our testers found that the fabric thoroughly and easily moved with our legs in our hiking and commuting tests. It's safe to say we love them both on and off the trail, as everyday pants or tough outdoor pants.

Also, a note on how they wear as summer pants: even when the sun is blazing, our legs never felt searing or humid in these slacks. And since the fabric is also treated with UPF 50 protection against sunlight, we wear them outdoors to travel in by default.

Sure, cargo pants fell out of fashion in the last couple of years, but with the emergence of the gorpcore trend embracing all things utilitarian, it’s safe to say they’re back—and looking better than ever.

These cargo pants combine style and functionality seamlessly, courtesy of their performance build. Crafted in a unique knit material, they offer unmatched stretch and mobility for any occasion, making them as comfortable as sports pants but as stylish as casual wear. We also love how they are able to retain their shape wear after wear, wash after wash. The neat built-in UV protection also has let our testers enjoy activities out in the sun worry-free all day long. One tester says he loves how these have stretch and flexibility for hours to keep up with the movement, and how the elastic waistband has always let him ensure a perfect, comfortable fit.

Lastly, with these pants, you can say goodbye to damp discomfort thanks to their quick-drying capabilities that keep moisture at bay, allowing you to stay dry and fresh throughout your pursuits. The fit is roomy above the knees and tailored below, which is versatile for working out and going out.

The brand that specializes in creating functional basics made good with these pants crafted from a high-tech fabric that’s built to brave the elements. The blend of tough polyester and spandex renders the fabric extra rugged and even weather-resistant, to the extent that in our testing, one wearer found it to be water-repellent on rainy days and stain-resistant during accidental coffee spills.

However, according to him, the best part about these travel pants by Mack Weldon isn't just how resilient it is, but also how convenient and comfortable it is too. The back-ribbed ankle cuffs, welt zip pockets, and belt loops in front of and behind the elastic waistband are neat additions, allowing him to get a personalized fit. The spandex stretch in the fabric also optimizes flexibility and mobility, allowing us to move freely and comfortably in any situation; the natural quick-drying property has also kept our wearer fresh and dry even during intense activities in our testing.

While as joggers, these aren't as soft or lounging-friendly as your usual go-tos, we do love Mack Weldon's intelligent design like the stealth zip pockets that offer secure storage while maintaining a streamlined look.

These sweatpants-like travel pants are one of our testers' perennial favorites: according to him, not only do they boast the comfort and softness of sweatpants, but they also are and look versatile for just about everything from flights to working out.

With an elastic drawstring waistband to snug them up just right, and a trouser-like silhouette, we felt that Public Rec's travel pant is as comfortable as your favorite collegiate sweats, yet look like dress pants or office pants for work, thanks to a slim silhouette. You won't be embarrassed to sport these in public. This stylish alternative to the normal sweatpant blows the most comfortable jeans out of the water, and sports tapered legs to help show off your sneakers too.

Our testing also shows that they're truly the all-powerful trousers since they're made with a unique blend of nylon and spandex that feels like a second skin but also offer a natural combo of four-way stretch, moisture-wicking, and breathability. Our testers found that these pants feel like your favorite pair of soft, cozy sweatpants but look like your Monday office bottoms and work like your go-to workout pants. Using a drawstring instead of a button, you can wear this from your office to the gym to the bar—no changing needed.

Personally, I've worn these Public Rec pants for a long travel day that included multiple flights and layovers, from NYC to Denver. Needlessly to say, that was the most comfortable travel day I have ever had, thanks to these pants.

You can tell just by the look of Rhone's commuter pants that they’re comfortable, but let us confirm that for you. Rhone hits the nail on the head with these wrinkle-resistant commuter bottoms that are made from the brand’s premium Flex-Knit fabric. While the fabric is polyester, the material here is reworked to be stretchy and breathable.

The Flex-Knit fabric has the 4-way stretch and recovery of a Stretch Armstrong action figure, and there’s a gusset inserted into the seam to keep your below-the-belt boys breathing easy, all delivered in a timeless silhouette that you’ll keep in your outfit rotation for years to come. Best of all, the brand offers these pants in a ton of color options, both staples you can get year-round and limited-time seasonal colorways.

Designed for today’s ever-connected professional, the pants also boast a media pouch for your phone and a security zipper pocket for your cardholder. In our testers, one wearer also can’t get enough of how sleek it looks with a polo shirt or how comfortable it fits even on the go. However, the only qualm is that the waistband isn't as stretchy and flexible as we'd like it to be.

Columbia’s Flex ROC Pants in a regular fit look just as relaxed in town as they do on a hiking trail. Add to the mix the brand’s Omni-Shade sun protection and multi-purpose pockets and you’re good to go pretty much anywhere.

One tester took these hiking pants to test them in the backcountry and mountains and came back singing more than a few praises: according to him, these are made of naturally breathable, soft, and moisture-wicking cotton. Then, there’s the stretch plus a comfy regular fit that gave him enough room and mobility.

Off-the-trail-wise, we’ve worn them as everyday pants before even in the office, and no one has batted an eye. We also love their utility features like the multi-functional pockets and a zip-up security pocket that keep our essentials and valuables safe and readily accessible.

The Patagonia Skyline Traveler Pant is equipped for the office, trail and travel. Made from a nylon-spandex blend, this pair offers four-way stretch for extra mobility, and a water-repellent shell to keep rain at bay. Our testers compared the feeling of these pants to that of cozy loungewear, but also stylish enough to wear in the city. We also appreciate the zippered thigh pocket to stash any valuables such as credit cards or keys that could get lost in transit.

Alo Yoga Day and Night Pant

Day and Night Pant

Alo’s athleisure are comfortable and stylish enough to wear to most errands and casual outings. Take the Day and Night pant. It has a closer fit for a dressier vibe, and there's a hint of stretch for that feels like a breeze to move in. Plus, the performance woven fabric is breathable, moisture-wicking and designed to resist wrinkles.

Our testers have worn these pants from the plane to dinner and still felt fresh. Even on warmer days, these pants don’t cause you to break a sweat, which is a testament to its breathability. The price is higher than most travel pants, but this pair has enough durability to last quite some time without any signs of fading or piling, based on our testing. Another bonus: it’s a fresh take on the classic, four-pocket pant style, which also comes in longer inseams for taller guys.

Banana Republic Brushed Traveler Cargo Pant

Brushed Traveler Cargo Pant

Cargo pants have made a comeback in recent years with options that feel more refined and sleek. Banana Republic’s version does just that, merging style and functionality. We found this pair ideal for extensive days on the road. For maximum comfort, this slim pair is constructed with adjustable slider tabs at the waist to customize the fit. Despite the tailored cut, there’s an incredible amount of stretch for ease of movement.

Our favorite aspect of these pants is the ultra-soft feel of the fabric, which we wanted to keep on for days. We also love the ample amount of pocket space including at the front, back and at the lower sides. It feels super airy and moves seamlessly through the airport, so you don’t experience any heaviness that most baggy cargos can bear. The Brushed Traveler Cargo is thick enough to keep you warm, especially when you’re sitting in the chilly airplane cabin for hours.

Bonobos Extra Stretch Travel Jeans

Extra Stretch Travel Jeans

Just as you'd expect from Bonobos, the brand offers one of the most comfortable jeans on the market, available in every wash you could imagine, with fits that range from tailored to straight. These Extra Stretch Travel Jeans often happen to be a favorite by athletes and active guys who refuse to be tamed by heavy denim fabric.

According to our tester, these jeans in ultra-stretchy cotton merge the performance capabilities of the Bonobos name while maintaining the classic look of a staple pair of denim, making them a superb choice for stylish guys on the move. For instance, ever thought of going for a light jog in jeans? That seems implausible, but not impossible with these extra stretchy jeans that almost feel like sweatpants according to our tester.

Tyler Sellers , a fitness coach and professional athlete, is stoked by Bonobos' versatile offerings. "They produce high-quality clothing in more sizes than most other manufacturers... Bonobos offers all cuts, sizes, and materials on a single product page so you can quickly choose whatever you believe will work best for you," he says. That is also to say you’ll love the fit, four-way stretch, and classic look of these travel jeans, so make room in your closet to stock up on a few pairs.

What Do Experts Say? " What I love about Bonobos is how they cater to any body shape. Their original stretch chino is not only a well-constructed item, but is at a budget price point as well. When shopping this piece keep in mind what fit will work best for your body shape. Larger thighs? Athletic fit is the option for you. Carry a little more weight around your midsection? Stick with the straight fit ," says personal wardrobe stylist Grace Thomas .

Ben Sherman 24/7 Motion Stretch Slim Chino

24/7 Motion Stretch Slim Chino

Old-school chinos were reliable business casual staples but didn't provide much comfort. A suite of forward-thinking labels—Ben Sherman among them—have updated the chino with athleisure-friendly features: stretchy waistbands and water- and wrinkle-resistant fabrics that hold up in all types of conditions without sacrificing style.

Having worn Ben Sherman’s chinos to travel in April and May 2023, I was impressed by how lightweight and smooth the fabric is. While it’s not traditional chino material, I like its nylon blend that is stretchy enough for a squat and sweat-wicking. I also found that while the fit is slim, it is not restricting, and all in all looks great enough for everyday wear as well as the office. At this price, it’s a bang for your buck.

Ben Sherman's chinos are a favorite among stylists, and it's easy to see why: they're made with the ideal bit of stretch, tapered to look sharp, and enhanced with a cotton-nylon blend that provides all-day-long softness. "What I love about Ben Sherman's Chino are their fit, cut, stretch, and a wide variety of colors," says celebrity stylist Lisa Marie Cameron who recommends going for the brand's unique colors to give you an elevated flare, or opting for classics that are easy to pair with your daily wear. "You can't go wrong choosing Ben Sherman's chinos because they are suitable for any occasion. From work to meetings, to date night, to weddings, and everything in between," she highlights. "All it takes is your favorite color, adding your own touch of style and you're ready to tackle the day with whatever you have planned."

Madewell Athletic Slim Jeans

Athletic Slim Jeans

After you’ve nailed your comfort on the fit, the next step is to go after other kinds of comfort—softness, stretch, and coolness—in spades. These Madewell athletic fit jeans are our editor’s tried-and-true favorite: they feel incredibly soft, have more room in the seat and thigh areas for beefy quads but look tapered from the knees down, and move like joggers when worn on the go but still look tailored and elevated; they’re also built with moisture-wicking temperature-regulating tech to keep your legs dry.

Overall, Madewell developed their COOLMAX denim blend to be far more breathable, flexible, and comfortable than regular 100% cotton denim. All three of these properties make them ideal travel pants. You get the look and function of a good pair of jeans that feel as comfortable as track pants.

Brooks Brothers Stretch Advantage Chino® Pants

Stretch Advantage Chino® Pants

Despite being one of the oldest menswear brands, Brooks Brothers' Advantage Chino® pants have the most modern design we've ever tested, from spandex stretch to cotton twill softness to a wrinkle-resistant fabric to five different fits that cater to just about every guy. Marcos Martinez , a lifestyle influencer, verifies how these pants meet all the demands in chinos. "The chinos should have a flexible waistband to give comfort and breathing room around the waist. The material should be mostly cotton twill and part spandex for flexibility," says Martinez.

If you're concerned that a legacy menswear label like Brooks Brothers decided to go for a more modern, performance-minded fabric with stretch for its chinos, we found that not only did they give us a perfect fit right off the shelf, but they also felt incredibly comfortable and have managed to stay crisp for almost a year—far better than chinos made with full. The touch of stretch and flexibility especially helped our tester wear them to travel or commute throughout the day, and the overall elegant look kept us looking sharp. Plus, with enough fits and sizes for anything from extra slim to extra large, whatever your body type is, rest assured that Brooks Brothers' chinos have you covered.

L.L.Bean Venture Stretch Five-Pocket Pants

Venture Stretch Five-Pocket Pants

A pair ideal for anyone who spends an equal amount of time at the office as they do in the great outdoors—and travels tons to get there. These stretchy and hard-wearing L.L.Beans can repel water yet still offer ample smartness for business days.

Roark Layover 2.0 Pants

Layover 2.0 Pants

Roark’s travel pants are constructed from a blended stretch canvas and feature a ventilated back yoke-mesh panel. Then there are all the compartments: two large zipped front pockets with inner storage sleeves, two buttoned back pockets, and a super-handy stash pouch at the rear for your phone.

How to Choose the Best Men's Travel Pants

commerce breaker

Comfort, mobility, and a nice fit are key elements to be on the lookout for when finding the best men's travel pants.

Fabric: The whole point of travel pants is that they should look like regular chinos or slacks while feeling like athletic pants when you're wearing them. They should be lightweight, flexible, and breathable. That means you want to look for a fabric blend that has some stretch in it and at least half polyester or Tencel fiber in the mix. Some brands will put cotton or wool in the mix to keep the business look and shape. The one thing to avoid is when brands go overboard with the stretch. If there is more than 10% elastin or spandex in the mix, your pants are going to look too casual and won't hold a proper shape.

Performance: Features like quick-drying and moisture-wicking are essential for comfort, keeping your legs cool and dry throughout your traveling. Wrinkle resistance in travel pants also helps you maintain a neat appearance without ironing. If you're traveling to a sunny destination, consider travel pants with built-in UV protection to shield your skin from harmful rays. And if you're packing travel pants, make sure the ones you get are lightweight.

Stretch: Travel pants are known for their ability to move with our legs and cater to our movement, so stretch is essential—whether it's a natural stretch or courtesy of a few percentages of elastane, spandex, or lycra.

Fit: Good travel pants should have a business-casual look. You want them to fit like a pair of cotton chinos or wool slacks. This means whatever style of fit you wear in those pants, you want the same fit in your travel pants. There may be a compulsion to go slimmer since it's a stretch pant. If you wear a straight-leg chino, do get slim-fit travel pants. If you wear slim-fit jeans, don't get skinny-fit travel jeans. Stick to your go-to fit.

Look: A lot of brands have gotten into the travel pants game in the past few years which means there is a lot of variety in looks out there. It's important to remember that your travel pants are a replacement for regular pants and should look the part. Stick to traditional colors like Navy, Black, Gray, Olive, and Khaki. You want them to be versatile and understated. Avoid the aqua blues and dusty oranges.

Pockets: While travel pants should look like normal pants, their functionality for ease on the go is key. Since you'll likely carry your travel and everyday essentials with you while you wear travel pants, you want to make sure you have enough deep pockets because you need to carry stuff on the go and don't want to worry about anything falling out when you sit down. Travel pants with hidden or zippered pockets for added security are also worth the buy.

What is the best material for travel pants?
