Is a travel agent worth it the pros and cons.

Travel experts agree there are several advantages to hiring a vacation planner.

The Pros & Cons of Using a Travel Agent

A travel agent can save you money and time.

Need to pivot your trip plans but don't want to deal with the extra time, money and hassle of rebooking flights and accommodations on your own? That's just one area where a knowledgeable travel agent (also commonly known as a travel advisor) can help. Read on to discover the other benefits – as well as the downsides – of using a travel agent, so you can confidently decide whether or not a travel agent is worth it for your next trip.

The Pros of Using a Travel Agent

Travel agents can save you money – and get you other perks.

"In some cases, you'll actually get a better  deal by working with a travel agent," says Jackie Steele, travel expert at MagicGuides . "This could be in the form of a cruise onboard credit (free spending money to use on the ship), access to special agency/group rates, or even just learning about a discount you qualify for but weren't aware of." The best agents will even keep an eye on new discounts as they're announced and apply them to your trip even after you've booked, he notes.

Travel agents handle all the details

Hotel room? Booked. Dinner reservations? Made. Tour tickets? Ready to go. A travel agent handles every detail of your vacation itinerary. "The traveler still gets to be involved in the fun part of dreaming up ideas and providing their travel wishes, while we take and perfect them," says Jessica Parker, founder of Trip Whisperer .

Molly McShea, owner and travel advisor at McShea Travel , points out that travel agents can also help with timing logistics. "Travel agents know how many days should be spent in each destination, which tours go together, and how many things you should do in a day," she says, adding that crafting an itinerary can be challenging if it's not something you regularly do. Additionally, travel agents can help you choose the best time to visit your preferred destination(s) based on seasonality and your budget, and sift through travel insurance policies to find the best option for your needs.

Travel agents can provide local expertise

"A travel advisor's industry connections and relationships provide added value to their clients," says Valerie Edman, a luxury travel advisor and agency owner at Cultured Travel LLC. She says when working with a travel agent, travelers gain access to a global network of connections including:

  • In-destination specialists who work exclusively with travel advisors and can connect travelers with unique, off-the-beaten-path experiences they wouldn't otherwise know about
  • Exclusive experiences not available to the general public

You'll avoid surprise fees

When deciding if a travel agent is worth it for you, remember this: A reputable agent can guarantee you won't encounter any surprise fees on accommodations and activities once your trip is booked.

You'll have someone to troubleshoot unexpected travel issues

A travel advisor is essentially your personal vacation concierge. "Because they've been around for so long, agents really know what to look for," says Christopher Elliott , a consumer advocate and journalist. "Travel agents are among the first to know about flight cancellations and delays , making it easy for them to rebook itineraries right away."

The Cons of Using a Travel Agent

It might not be your cheapest option.

There are some instances when it makes more sense to plan your own trip. "If you're planning a quick flight from New York City to Los Angeles, it's easy enough to book it yourself online directly or through a third-party booking site," says Elliott. "If you're planning a once-in-a-lifetime trip or bucket list honeymoon , that's when you call the experts."

You'll have less flexibility in your itinerary

The upside of working with a travel agent is having someone plan an epic vacation for you based on industry knowledge and local expertise. But this can also be a downside in the event you discover an activity you'd like to do or a restaurant you'd like to try that isn't on your pre-planned itinerary. If you alter your plans, you risk losing money; plus, the time it takes for you and your travel agent to coordinate your change of plans may not be worth the hassle.

You still have to do some research

It's important to find an agent you can trust, which means you still have to do some of the vacation planning. For this part, Parker recommends picking up the phone. "Lots of people avoid or don't pick up the phone as much anymore," she says. "That's where you get the high-touch service, tone of voice, excitement or concerns to manage." She advises to look for the following red flags:

  • No fees: " Travel advisors are charging planning fees more now or increasing them, so the client knows more confidently than ever, we work for them, not the suppliers with the best commissions," Parker explains. "There are a lot of things that are non-commissionable and the advisor's time and expertise shouldn't be given away for free, either. That's the best way to show an advisor takes their business seriously."
  • Limited options: If you work with someone who is inexperienced or has an incentive to book you with a certain supplier, they may not be prioritizing your best interests. "It's important to check if they are with a larger consortia, accreditations and network, typically listed on their website and signatures," says Parker. "That level of mindshare doesn't come with a lone advisor unless they have many, many years of experience."
  • Slow response times: If communication is delayed, that's a sign they may be too busy to plan your trip – but again, this is something you can avoid by having the right conversations early on.

Edman suggestes starting your search with the American Society of Travel Advisors . "ASTA-verified travel advisors are committed to the highest industry standards and have verifiable industry knowledge so consumers can feel confident in working with them," she says.

When to Hire a Travel Agent to Plan Your Trip

Even do-it-yourselfers may want a pro’s help with an elaborate vacation or a complicated itinerary.

hire a travel agent

Before the internet put trip-planning tools at your fingertips, you might have popped into a travel agency to shop for airline tickets or flip through brochures. Now, online booking engines and review sites can spark vacation ideas and point you to everything from a cozy B&B to the best wine bar in a city.

Post-COVID, traveling looks a little different. At the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, only  23 million Americans traveled 50 or more miles  from their home during Memorial Day Weekend, per AAA. Cut to May 2023, and AAA predicts  42.3 million Americans  will take a vacation, with 3.4 million travelers planning to fly. With pre-pandemic crowds on the roads and in airports, mapping out a stress-free trip could get complicated.

Does that leave a reason to turn to a travel agent? It depends on the trip. An agent won’t add much value to a quick getaway or a meandering road trip that you plan as you go. And for some people, researching where to go and stay is part of the experience, says Kelsey Blodget, former senior executive editor of Oyster.com and Jetsetter.com .

If you have a complicated itinerary or faraway destination, you can benefit from an agent’s advice. And if you hate sweating the details or become overwhelmed by all the information online, a travel agent can save you time and money.

Average airline fares  for April 2023 were $294.55, down from a peak of $344.85 in May 2022, according to the  U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics . Even so, that's 2.7% higher than March 2023's average of $286.81.

A travel agent's expertise could come in handy when you want to save on rising travel costs, or if you simply need some guidance.

Hand-holding and more. A good agent should interview you about your travel style and the inspiration for your trip to suss out your “ultimate desires,” whether that means outdoor adventure or delicious cuisine, says Scott Koepf, senior vice president of sales at Avoya Travel .

Agents will research, customize and book as much of your trip as you like, using reputable companies. They can help sift through the myriad cruise-line options, organize private pickups from transportation hubs, reserve tables at restaurants that book up fast, and arrange skip-the-line tickets to popular attractions. They can also steer you away from, say, a resort displaying the lowest price in favor of one that offers better value.

Although agents aren’t the only gatekeepers of unbiased or “insider” knowledge, thanks to travel blogs and online destination guides, agents can tap their global contacts to arrange something you’d be hard-pressed to replicate yourself. For example, Michelle Weller, an agent in Houston, once set up a client and his friend with a private English-speaking guide to revisit where they served in Vietnam.

They may also be privy to deals that aren’t advertised elsewhere. Plus, agencies that are part of larger networks can access group rates and perks. For instance, agents affiliated with Travel Leaders Group can get up to 30% off “best available rates” at thousands of hotels, along with free breakfast and Wi-Fi, and up to $100 in credits, depending on the property.

The price of advice. Travel agents say you won’t pay more to book an excursion through them instead of directly with a tour operator or cruise line; rather, they make a commission off the sale. Some agents will charge a planning fee, which could range from $50 to several hundred dollars for a complex itinerary.

To find an agent, you can search by destination and specialty at the American Society of Travel Agents’ consumer site, Travel Sense , or use online search tools at networks such as Travel Leaders or the luxury-focused Virtuoso .

Ask prospective agents about their expertise in your style of travel and destination, what they offer that you can’t arrange yourself, and how they will advocate for you if something goes awry. For example, can you call your agent at any hour to fix a missed connection? If that peace of mind helps you sleep at night, you’ll be a happier traveler.

Work From Home Travel Agent Job

In this guide, you’ll learn the basics of what such a position entails, as well as where to find work with legitimate opportunities.

Companies That Hire Remote Travel Agents

There are several companies that hire remote agents that are worth looking into. Each has its own unique set of requirements, but you’ll find a list of general requirements to expect in the next section.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of host agencies that hire remote travel agents. However, we’ve personally researched each one of them to ensure they are 100% legitimate.

While you shouldn’t feel limited to this list, if you do decide to apply to any other agencies or positions you find online, please do your due diligence in researching them thoroughly before contacting them.

As you’ll find out in the last section of this guide, there are also many work-at-home travel agent scams to look out for.

1. American Express

American Express always has a list of positions available in major locations where the company has a physical branch or large customer base. Not all of these are remote (and most of them are not in the line of being a travel agent).

Visit the  American Express Careers page  for more information. Alternatively, you can head straight to their  Virtual Career Opportunities page  to see what remote positions are currently available and where you need to be based to apply (for example, Toronto, Canada).

It’s also recommended you  join the American Express Talent Community  for regular updates and newly opened positions, especially if one that suits you isn’t currently available.

2. Carlson Wagonlit Travel

Carlson Wagonlit Travel is a reputable industry leader in global digital business travel management. As such, they have remote opportunities for talented, enthusiastic applicants from almost all over the world.

You can visit  CWT Careers Page  to run a search through their database for any positions currently available in your location. Alternatively, you can head straight to the  Travel Counselor page  to search for opportunities.

Do note that you’ll need to  create a free CWT profile  in order to apply for a job. It’s also worth spending time reading through their  FAQs  to familiarize yourself with their application, recruitment, and development (training) processes.

3. Carnival Cruise Lines

Carnival Cruise Lines has been operating for almost 50 years and hires shoreside as well as onboard workers.

One of their onshore, remote work options is, of course, as a travel agent, which they call a virtual vacation planner or sometimes a group agent. To find such positions, you need to visit the  Carnival Cruise Lines Jobs page  or  Filtered Search page .

It’s also a good idea to visit the  corporation’s general jobs page  to sign up for job alerts.

4. Cruise.com

Cruise.com regularly updates its  Employment page  as appropriate. At the time of publication, it reads that,

“During 2019 Cruise.com will be hiring team members who are professional and passionate about selling cruises and other leisure services and products and providing clients with world-class service either as a home-based agent or in our beautiful Dania Beach location.”

Further down the page, they specify “Future Home-Based Job Opportunities (Multi State Except California and Hawaii).” Included are details for 3 positions: Customer Service Agents, Cruise Sales Agents, and Online Support Agents.

It’s worth noting that Cruise.com does have strict requirements: a minimum of 2 years recent experience with cruise sales (if applying for the Cruise Sales Agents, the closest approximation of travel agents).

They also have a preference for those with call center experience, as the position entails cruise sales via telephone. You’ll also be required to sell Allianz Insurance (travel insurance), as Cruise.com is entering a partnership with them.

In exchange, successful applicants will receive base pay as well as tiered incentives.

FROSCH has been around since 1972 and focuses on deluxe leisure and corporate travel. With the aspiration of becoming “the travel company of choice,” they have high expectations of their employees – both office-based and remote.

They only hire from certain locations at present and there’s no guarantee of a position being available.

While not quite on a “first-come, first-served” hiring basis, it’s highly recommended if you meet FROSCH’s requirements, you apply as soon as possible.

To browse current job listings, please visit the  FROSCH Careers page  and follow the heading corresponding with your location (list included below).

  • Philippines
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

One of the most famous worldwide hotel chains, Hilton also regularly hires remote workers. Their  Work From Home Talent page  doesn’t give any indication of the types of position available, but their  Search All Jobs page  (with “Work From Home” selected) does.

At the time of posting, Hilton had no open opportunities to join their remote team. However, it is worth mentioning that they do appear to hire virtual call center agents to help with making reservations.

You can also use their general  Careers page  to filter results according to your location. This page is the easiest to access directly from their main website.

JetBlue was one of several airlines that announced they were  no longer working with travel agencies , in order to help cut costs. However, they do hire travel agents of their own to help their clients make reservations and assist with customer service issues.

While JetBlue makes it somewhat unnecessarily difficult to find such opportunities on their  Careers page , Glassdoor has  several reviews  by currently employed work from home customer service and reservationists (the latter being what JetBlue calls their travel agents).

It’s worth going through these reviews to get a holistic view of the opportunity to work for the company.

General consensus appears to be that it’s a great part-time, short-term solution for anyone wanting to gain experience, enjoy great benefits, and be willing to work strict hours (though you can reportedly trade in hours if need be).

The major complaint among current and recently resigned employees is that cancellations and delays inevitably create a perfect storm for customer service representatives and that JetBlue tends to micromanage, with regular updates that need to be read almost daily as soon as received via email.

Our Recommendation

Learn from the experience of those who have worked for JetBlue in the past. The complaints are almost exclusively from those who spent 5+ years working from home for the company.

While we couldn’t find any concrete requirements posted by JetBlue, it does seem to be a good way to gain experience before moving to another company to host you as a work from home travel agent.

8. VIP Desk (Now Aspire Lifestyles)

Aspire Lifestyles, previously VIP Desk, styles itself as a “Leader in B2B Benefit Solutions and Concierge Services.”

That’s really just a fancy way of saying they offer high-end customer service/virtual assistant services, with a focus on travel, health, wellness, and assistance with home and auto.

There are 2 general types of employment opportunities within this sphere (though several others that include finance and business development): brand ambassadors, who act as customer service agents, and concierges, who perform virtual assistant duties relating to travel.

It’s the latter you want to apply for if you’re wanting to focus purely on being a work from home travel agent. Do be aware there are typically fewer of these positions open, however.

To discover available opportunities, please visit the  Aspire Lifestyles Careers page . You can also filter results according to general geographic location:

  • Asia-Pacific (several countries listed)
  • Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (4 locations listed: Europe, South Africa, Turkey, and the UAE)
  • North America (several U.S. cities listed)
  • South America (Brazil only)

9. Working Solutions

Working Solutions offers several work from home employment opportunities, including:

  • Inbound technical support agent
  • Sales representative
  • Travel and ticketing agent
  • Customer support agent
  • Data entry clerk
  • Copy-editor/proofreader

Travel consultants, as Working Solutions calls them, work on a part-time basis, but the pay isn’t exactly clear. Depending on the individual project, you would invoice the company for hours worked and receive between $9 and $30/hour once every 2 weeks.

One downside is, that once accepted as an independent contractor for Working Solutions, you’re expected to apply for all of its various programs (the employment opportunities listed above).

This means you aren’t guaranteed to be hired as a travel consultant just because Working Solutions accepts your general application.

On the plus side, you’re able to set your own hours based on workload availability, and the company provides full training as necessary. After training is completed (varies from a few days to a few weeks), you’ll also receive a stipend.

Visit the  Working Solutions Work at Home Jobs page  to learn more and apply to become part of their Talent Community.

10. World Travel Holdings

World Travel Holdings might be one of the most attractive options on our list, especially if you’re a beginner with no prior experience.

It is worth mentioning that there is an investment required from your side.

Usually, this is a major red flag that warns you a job opportunity is in fact a scam, but we’ve done the research and are confident World Travel Holdings is 100% legitimate.

So, what is the investment?

$250 refundable deposit (paid over 5 payroll deductions – so you don’t actually have to make any upfront payment) for the company computer (including monitor, keyboard, mouse, and headset) and landline phone, which is provided for you

Cable and DSL initial setup fees, which typically max out at $200 – however, if you already have cable and DSL that meet World Travel Holdings’ requirements, you won’t need to spend any extra money here (or you can replace initial setup with upgrade fees)

$50 to $100 for a UPS/Surge Protector (again, if you already have one, no cost applies)

The only other expense is any optional supplies you decide to get for yourself, like a notepad and pen set, printer, fax machine, etc.

You’ll also receive paid training, ongoing support, and training, benefits (including travel discounts and similar perks), and paid time off. The only stipulation is you don’t set up your home office in the same residence as any other World Travel Holdings employee.

Interested? Visit their  Work @ Home Careers page .

What are the Resume and Experience Requirements for Being a Travel Agent?

The exact resume and experience requirements for being a travel agent vary depending on which host agency you apply to join.

You’ll also find if you decide to start up as an independent, the requirements might actually be a little higher, as clients will want more surety when contracting an independent travel agent.

As a general rule, however, you can expect the following requirements (including equipment, etc.) will need to be met:

  • A working computer (desktop or laptop)
  • High-speed, reliable internet connection
  • A fax machine, printer, and copier (if you can get a 3-in-1 model, all the better)
  • A quiet, designated working environment, such as a study or home office
  • Pass a background and employment check (when applying with a host agency, at their discretion)
  • Flexible schedule to suit client needs
  • Most host agencies will require prior experience, but some won’t
  • No special education requirements – and some host agencies will provide training and software as necessary

Finding Work from Home Travel Agent Work

If you’ve decided to find work-from-home travel agent opportunities as an independent, or you want to consider options for host companies not included in our list above, the best place to get started is  FlexJobs .

Simply  visit their Pricing page  to select your preferred membership subscription. Good Value costs $14.95 for 1 month’s subscription, Better Value $29.95 for 1 quarter (3 months), and Best Value $49.95 for 1 year’s subscription.

All subscriptions share the same benefits – it’s only the duration and price that change (the longer your membership period, the lower your per-month costs).

What Do Travel Agents Do?

Travel agents do exactly what you said you love (or at least enjoy) doing in answer to our opening question above. They help holidaymakers plan their trips by taking care of the travel arrangements.

This means you would be doing things such as booking flights, reserving hotel rooms, tickets, vehicle rentals, restaurant reservations, and so much more. Not that you’ll necessarily be doing  all  of that for every client: some only need help with the finer details.

There’s a huge market for this type of service. Many people find the process of planning a holiday to be so stressful that they subscribe to the half-joking notion that they need a vacation to recover from their vacation. And this makes them very willing and even eager to enlist the help of a travel agent.

Can I Work From Home as a Travel Agent?

Absolutely! There are 2 ways to go about doing so:

Striking out on your own

This requires a lot of initial and ongoing work to set up a website and blog for your independent agency, marketing and advertising yourself to attract customers and building relationships with different types of travel-related businesses. This includes cruise lines, airlines, hotel franchises, vehicle rental companies in different countries… the list goes on, almost without end.

Join an agency

A much less stressful option is to join a host agency that will hire you as a remote travel agent. There are several to choose from (we’ll introduce you in a later section), but the really great thing is you won’t be just another employee. You’ll get a lot of the perks of working for an established company while still being self-employed and working as an independent contractor. And if you’re hoping to strike out on your own eventually, then doing your time with a host agency will open up a lot of doors for building the professional relationships you’ll need.

How Do Travel Agents Make Their Money?

Most of the time, the travel agency that contracts you as an independent remote agent will pay you an agreed-upon commission fee – typically a set percentage of the fees they charge the clients.

Some remote travel agents will also charge a small service fee over and above the commission, but this isn’t a standard practice anymore.

Then there’s the other side of the coin: agencies that hire remote agents on a full-time basis as actual employees. If you do decide to join such a company, you’ll receive a base salary in addition to the commission earned.

There’s one last thing worth mentioning here, though it’s not really  making  money so much as  saving  it. As a remote travel agent, you can work almost anywhere with a solid internet connection.

And this means it’s easier for you to travel… especially with the fantastic discounts you’ll score as a result of your work.

What is Work At Home Travel Agent Salary?

This depends on who you ask…

The  Bureau of Labor Statistics  offers a median figure of $38,700/year, based on 2018 data.

ZipRecruiter , on the other hand, suggests an average of $57,623/year (as of June 20, 2019), with a range spreading from $15,000/year to $125,000/year. The majority of home-based travel agents appear to be earning between $28,000/year and $70,000/year.

Confusing? You bet.

Because your pay is determined by so many different factors – whether you’re fully independent (and if so, how many clients you’re pulling in) or hosted by an agency (and if so, whether you receive a base salary as well as commission, or only commission… plus how much of each), it’s difficult to get an accurate estimate.

Are There Any Work From Home Travel Agency Scams?

A sad fact of life is, that for as long as there have been jobs, there have been scams. And online/remote work is no different.

One common scam is being sent an email from a seemingly reputable agency with an online presence overseas. Purporting to be in response to an application, this scam relies on the target having applied to various online and remote positions (including legitimate travel agencies) and not remembering whether they’ve applied to this one in particular.

The email goes on to explain that you, as the agent, will receive checks in the mail, sent by nationally local clients of the agency. All you need to do is cash the check and send the agency a set portion of the amount via wire transfer.

Where the scam comes in is that you’re obligated to complete the transfer on the same day as you receive the check. A few days after the agency has taken your money, the bank will notify you that the check never cleared. And because the payment method is untraceable, you won’t be getting your money back either.

You can read more about this particular scam and how to avoid it at  Scam Alert: Don’t Take that “Travel Coordinator” Job That Requires an Upfront Payment  by Consumer Affairs.

A second, similar type of scam is the travel agent certification scam. Here, targeted or organic ads online introduce you to the opportunity to become a travel agent and receive world-wide exclusive discounts. Usually, the discounts advertised are  very  enticing – 50% to 70%!

The catch? You need to pay a registration fee of $200+ and complete a 20-minute test. But the website looks legitimate and there are glowing testimonials designed to make you feel like you’ll make that fee up again by the end of your first trip (through the discounts, of course).

Here things start to vary. In scenario 1, you do actually receive a travel agent card via the mail. But once you start trying to use it, you’ll be informed that it can’t be used as anything other than a $200+ bookmark. In scenario 2, you never even receive the card or hear anything from the scammers again.

Want to get work done by experts?

Looking for freelancers with a specific skill.

Find Freelancers

Hire a Travel Agent for Your Travels

Independent travel agents can make domestic and international travel far less stressful, working on behalf of businesses and private clients to coordinate logistics, details, and scheduling to streamline trips and develop detailed travel itineraries.

Whether you’d like to hire a travel agent to coordinate a complex work retreat, handle the travel arrangements for groups of international visitors, or plan a tour to incorporate specific areas, a remote travel agent is flexible and has the autonomy to make travel recommendations, suggest airlines, and recommend providers based on their experience and knowledge.

Let’s look at our top tips for finding the best Guru travel professionals, prioritizing the skills that will be most valuable to you, and some of the requirements you can include in a freelance travel agent description.

What Does a Freelance Travel Agent Do?

The role of a travel agent is to take over the administration of organizing all aspects of your travel requirements, including:

Scheduling and itineraries

Transfers and onward travel

Bookings and reservations

Accommodating dietary and other requirements

Rescheduling flights and transport

Some travel agents specialize in specific destinations and speak the local language, providing you or your business team with a liaison to manage your trip and ensure everything is tailored to your needs. Other travel agents operate as freelance travel experts or may focus on certain types of travel, such as corporate travel planning or sustainable travel. As a customer, you can find a travel agent that best fits your business needs.

Hiring a top-tier travel agent can make trips more straightforward and organized, remove the time burden from you or your colleagues, and ensure that you make good use of loyalty schemes and frequent flyer programs to reduce unnecessary travel costs.

What to Look For in a Great Travel Agent

Travel planners should possess fantastic communication abilities, ideally with an in-depth knowledge of your specified destinations, particularly for international travel, where advice about places to stay or where to host your guests can be invaluable. Effective communication and attention to detail ensure your schedules and plans are precise, carefully coordinated, and mapped out with clear information about connections, booking details, and the travel arrangements made on your behalf.

Companies browsing the network of more than 6,200 travel agents to hire on the Guru platform can also look for capabilities most relevant to the job or role they’d like a travel consultant to undertake, such as:

Experience in types of travel, such as coordinating group business visits, arranging private charter flights, or preparing detailed expense reports and evidence of carbon footprint offset.

Prior project testimonials with positive reviews and social ratings from past travel clients (all Guru's travel agent profiles show potential employers the freelancer's portfolio and feedback to offer insight into the service standards available)

Other skills often relevant to freelance travel agent commissions include familiarity with software tools to integrate your plans with your calendar and reporting systems, expertise in professional hospitality planning, and fluency in alternative languages throughout your intended destinations. A professional qualification in tourism, hospitality, travel, or business can be advantageous, but the capacity to negotiate and make detailed plans remains just as important when working with a travel agency.

For example, travel agents new to freelancing may have years of expertise representing an agency and have a high degree of competence that could potentially be more relevant than a newly qualified travel agent without on-the-ground experience. More junior travel agents can offer competitive rates, whereas highly skilled travel planning professionals will likely apply for customer jobs with a more generous budget.

Writing a Job Post For a Freelance Travel Agent

Guru makes it easy to connect with high-caliber travel agents and select the best freelance travel agency for the job. You can create a job post and share it free through the Guru portal, inviting suitably qualified candidates to submit a quotation. Alternatively, companies can browse travel agent profiles and assess the individual agent’s portfolio to decide who to contact directly for a price proposal.

If you choose to write a travel agent job post, our advice is to include as much information as possible to ensure prospective applicants can determine whether the job is a good match for their skills. You can include the following in your virtual travel agent job description:

An overview of the work: Do you need an agent to manage all bookings and planning, or would you like them to provide data entry and reporting services to feed into your expenses and accounting system?

Duration of the travel project: Some travel agents work on ad hoc or one-off projects. In contrast, others regularly work with the same business, developing familiarity with the client's priorities and expectations.

Experience: If you need a travel agent with access to certain software packages, with a liaison within an airline or destination, or who has previously visited or lived in a location, this should be shown in the job post.

It is also useful to provide an indication of the business budget, noting whether you would like to hire a travel agent per hour, per day, or on an ongoing basis.

When hiring a travel agent, it's also important to ask interview questions that will help you understand if the travel agent is the right fit your your business needs. The travel agent should be flexible to your needs and support your travel plans.

Different Job Titles and Roles for a Freelance Travel Agent

One of the common issues for companies is that the perfect travel agent may not refer to their skills and services as a travel agent. This is a broad-scope term often used, but you may also wish to browse for the following job titles:

Corporate or Business Travel Agents

Travel agents specializing in business or corporate travel may incorporate these terms into their professional titles. This means they work on travel planning for companies according to their objectives, such as making group business travel as cost-effective as possible or accommodating hospitality requirements for visiting guests.

Retail Travel Planners or Bookers

These travel agents provide an end-to-end service, beginning with recommending locations and progressing through to custom planning and making reservations and bookings on behalf of the customer.

Remote or Distance Travel Agents

Some agents include ‘remote’ or ‘distance’ in their title to signify that they work independently and remotely, supporting any customer within potentially multiple countries with tailored travel planning.

Benefits of Hiring a Talented Independent Travel Agency

Freelance travel agents can make booking trips faster, easier, and more affordable, often with the potential to negotiate discounts or group booking reductions, while organizing every detail of your travel and providing comprehensive itineraries. These professionals are not just about making bookings or writing airline tickets; they’re architects of personalized experiences, curators of exclusive adventures, and navigators through the intricate maze of travel planning. Whether you’re seeking hidden gems or unparalleled luxury, travel agents are your gateway to a world of unforgettable journeys, blending their unique skills to craft the trip of your dreams.

This guide will show you how to find and hire a great travel agent for your next vacation.

Table of contents.

Travelers should recognize the distinctions between the travel professional roles and the increasing expertise of each designation. As travel advisors and designers invest more in expanding their knowledge and skills, their fees may reflect the value of their specialized services and exceptional experiences. Despite the differences in titles, these professionals aim to exceed client expectations by creating seamless and fulfilling travel experiences.

Travel Agent

  • Facilitates bookings and manages logistics based on client preferences.
  • Coordinates travel arrangements efficiently once destination and itinerary are provided.
  • Traditionally, it is a transactional role as an order taker or a call center employee.

Travel Advisor

  • Offers deeper insight and personalized service.
  • Provides tailored recommendations and expert insights to enhance the travel experience.
  • Offers guidance and support throughout the planning process beyond essential bookings.

Travel Designer

  • Elevates the planning experience by curating intricate, tailored itineraries.
  • Possesses exceptional expertise and creativity.
  • Crafts travel experiences that exceed expectations and leave a lasting impression.

Whether you hire a travel agent , travel advisor, or travel designer , understand that they are all indispensable when planning amazing vacations. They serve as the bridge between clients and travel suppliers, orchestrating fulfilling travel experiences for all parties involved. However, it’s crucial to discern the best fit for your needs and remain vigilant against unscrupulous practices in the industry.

For simplicity, this article will refer to all travel professionals as “travel agents.”

Sphera travel uses the term travel designer due to sue’s thirty-plus years in the travel industry and her expertise in river cruising., do travel agents still exist and how do i find a great travel agent for my trip.

Yes, travel agents still play a vital role in today’s travel industry. There were more than 53,000 travel agents in the United States in 2022.   Despite the rise of online booking platforms, many travelers rely on the personalized service and deep expertise that travel agents offer.

These professionals provide tailored travel experiences, access to exclusive benefits, and invaluable assistance with complex travel arrangements that online services often can’t match. Especially for customized trips, luxury vacations, or when navigating travel during uncertain times, the insight and support of a skilled travel agent can significantly enhance the travel experience. Their knowledge of destinations, ability to handle unforeseen travel issues, and connections within the travel industry make them an indispensable resource for many travelers.

Understanding the Value of A Travel Agent:

As you plan your dream vacation, it’s natural to wonder whether enlisting the services of a travel agent will come at an additional cost. While working with a travel agent may incur fees, the value they provide far outweighs the investment. Here’s why:

Recognizing the Value of Service

  • A reputable travel agent invests significant time and effort into crafting your itinerary, leveraging their expertise and industry connections to ensure every aspect of your trip meets or exceeds your expectations. From researching destinations to coordinating logistics, their meticulous attention to detail streamlines the planning process, saving time and stress.
  • Throughout your journey, a dedicated travel agent remains accessible to address any concerns or unforeseen circumstances, providing invaluable peace of mind and assistance whenever needed.

Expertise and Experience

  • When evaluating the cost of working with a travel agent, it’s essential to consider the depth of their knowledge and experience. Beyond mere logistical arrangements, a seasoned agent brings decades of insight and firsthand experience, enriching your travel experience with insider tips, personalized recommendations, and unparalleled expertise.
  • While navigating the planning process independently may be tempting, a seasoned travel agent’s wealth of knowledge cannot be replicated through online research alone. Their ability to anticipate and address potential challenges ensures a seamless and enriching travel experience transcending the ordinary.

Understanding Payment Structures

Travel agents typically earn compensation through various means, including vendor commissions and planning fees. While specifics may vary, a transparent agent will disclose their payment structure and ensure alignment with your preferences. By understanding how your agent is compensated, you gain clarity and confidence in the value exchange inherent in the relationship.

While partnering with a travel agent may involve additional costs, their unparalleled expertise, personalized service, and peace of mind justify the investment.

Before contacting a travel agent, you should know these things about your trip..

When looking for a travel agent, the first step is to look at what you want from your vacation. Knowing your likes and dislikes is essential before you start chatting with an agent. Remember, this trip is about making your dream getaway come to life!

1. Destination Preferences

Where do you envision your ideal getaway? Whether it’s the sun-kissed beaches of Mexico or the enchanting castles of Germany, clarity on your desired destination is paramount.

2. Budgetary Considerations

Before contacting a travel agent, it’s crucial to have a clear understanding of your budgetary constraints. Distinguish between budget-friendly and luxury options to grasp what you will invest in your trip. Being realistic about your budget is essential to ensure that your vacation brings joy rather than financial stress. A reputable travel agent will work within your budgetary limits or transparently suggest modifications if your preferred destination exceeds your financial scope.  Please keep in mind that not all travel agents work with all budgets.

3. Purpose of the Trip

Understanding the purpose of your trip is fundamental before engaging with a travel agent. Whether you’re seeking a relaxing beach vacation, an adventurous trek, a cultural immersion, or attending a specific event, knowing what you want to achieve helps tailor the experience to your expectations.

4. Your Travel Style

Your travel style also plays a significant role. Do you prefer luxury accommodations and fine dining, or are you more of a budget traveler interested in hostels and street food? Are you inclined towards structured itineraries or spontaneous exploration? Communicating your style will enable the agent to match your preferences with suitable accommodations, activities, and transportation.

5. Special Needs

Special needs require careful consideration as well. This encompasses any dietary restrictions, mobility issues, or health-related accommodations you may need during your trip.

By clearly communicating these things to a travel agent, you effectively assess their ability to manage your travel needs. This interaction not only aids in personalizing your journey but also tests the agent’s expertise and commitment.

A skilled agent will demonstrate their understanding and capability to plan your trip meticulously.

Qualities of a great travel agent.

  • Expert Knowledge: Deep understanding of travel logistics, destinations, and local customs.
  • Detail-Oriented: Caters to your preferences and special needs, ensuring a personalized trip.
  • Clear Communication: Keeps you informed and readily answers questions throughout the planning process.
  • Problem Solver: Quickly addresses any travel issues, providing peace of mind.
  • Personalized Service: Offers tailored itineraries based on your unique interests and travel style.
  • Transparent and Trustworthy: Provides clear information about costs, fees, and booking conditions upfront, ensuring no hidden surprises.
  • Well-Connected: Leverages industry relationships to secure exclusive deals and perks.
  • Passionate about Travel: Shares genuine enthusiasm and insights, enhancing travel planning.
  • Flexible and Adaptable: Accommodates changes smoothly and stays updated with industry trends.
  • Post-Trip Follow-Up: Seeks feedback to improve future services, showing a commitment to your satisfaction.

Additionally, a great travel agent will be upfront about the planning and fee process from the start, offering a clear “work with us” guide to outline how they operate, what you can expect, and how fees are structured. This transparency ensures you’re well-informed and comfortable throughout your collaboration.

How to find a great travel agent.

As you seek the perfect travel agent for your dream vacation, diligent research becomes your compass, guiding you toward trustworthy professionals while avoiding potential pitfalls.

Seek Recommendations

Word-of-mouth referrals from friends or relatives can serve as invaluable endorsements. Inquire about their experiences with travel agents and whether they were satisfied with the service provided.

Search Google

Search Google using specific keywords related to your travel needs, such as “luxury travel agent for River Cruising”, “best adventure travel agent “, “travel agent Grand Rapids, MI” or “luxury travel designer for empty nesters.” This can help narrow your search to agents specializing in the travel experience you’re looking for.

Graphic Showing a google search looking for luxury travel designer for empty nesters

Search Pinterest

Pinterest is an excellent platform for finding travel inspiration and seeing the types of trips travel agents have planned. Use keywords related to your desired travel experience, and look for boards or pins from travel agents.

Verify Certifications

A reputable travel agent will proudly display their certifications on their website. Look for accreditations from recognized bodies such as the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA) or the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). Membership in such organizations signifies adherence to stringent standards of professionalism and ethics.

Scrutinize Reviews

Explore online reviews on websites like Google , social media, and the Better Business Bureau. Notice any consistent patterns and evaluate the general tone of previous clients’ feedback. Consistent positive reviews strengthen the agent’s reliability, whereas many negative reviews should prompt caution. Additionally, observing how the travel agency responds to criticism is wise. Do they offer explanations or solutions to the issues raised?

Consortia Affiliation

Investigate if the travel agent is connected with a reputable travel consortia, such as Signature Travel Network or Virtuoso. A travel consortia is an alliance of travel professionals that provides its members with enhanced buying power, access to exclusive perks, resources, and valuable industry insights. Being part of such a network significantly boosts an agent’s capacity to design unparalleled travel experiences for their clients, thanks to the collective knowledge and advantages these consortia offer.

Attend Local Expos

Look for travel expos, trade shows, and industry networking events in your area or nationally. These gatherings are excellent opportunities to meet travel agents and industry professionals face-to-face. Bridal Shows and Women’s Expos are fantastic events with travel agents present.

Connect on LinkedIn

LinkedIn offers a unique avenue to find the perfect travel agent, showcasing their professional background, client testimonials, and industry engagement through profiles and content sharing. Recommendations and skills endorsements on their profiles testify to their expertise and service quality. Utilizing LinkedIn’s networking features and direct messaging, you can easily connect with agents, assess their fit for your travel needs, and initiate a conversation.

As you navigate this research process, remain vigilant for red flags and exercise discernment in evaluating potential travel agents. While certifications and affiliations provide a degree of assurance, the real litmus test lies in the testimonials and experiences of past clients.

By arming yourself with knowledge and insight, you can confidently select a travel agent who meets and exceeds your expectations, ensuring an unforgettable vacation experience., choosing a great travel agent.

When choosing a travel agent to entrust with your vacation plans, the options can seem overwhelming, especially if you lack personal recommendations. A Google search for travel agents will likely yield numerous results, but how do you determine which fits you best? Here are some key factors to consider as you embark on your search, but remember to conduct thorough research before making a decision:

Does the agent specialize in your desired destination or type of vacation? Expertise in a particular area often comes at a price, but it can be worth it for the tailored experience you receive. For example, an agent who excels in planning Disney vacations may not be as well-versed in organizing European river cruises. Consider whether the agent’s expertise aligns with your travel interests and preferences.

Website Reviews

Look closely at the agent’s website to gauge their suitability for your needs. Does their website showcase the type of vacation you’re interested in? Are they catering to a specific clientele or niche market? For instance, if you’re seeking a luxury small-group vacation tailored for empty nesters, you’ll want to ensure that the agent’s offerings align with your preferences. Pay attention to any testimonials or reviews on their website to gauge customer satisfaction and overall reputation.

Join Their Email List

Hang out on their email list for a bit.  You’ll receive regular emails that give you a peak into their travel knowledge and expertise.

Follow Them on Social Media

Selecting the right travel agent can be streamlined by following them on social media and joining any Facebook groups they may have. This approach offers a window into their offerings, travel insights, and personal style. Engaging with their content allows you to assess how well they align with your travel preferences and expectations, providing a deeper understanding of their expertise and personality before choosing.

Interview Your Travel Agent

As a consumer, it’s crucial to vet potential travel agents to confirm they meet your travel needs and expectations. A reputable agent welcomes and encourages questions, responding transparently to all inquiries. Most agents offer a complimentary initial call, the perfect opportunity to interview your potential agent. During this conversation, you can gauge their expertise, willingness to accommodate your preferences and responsiveness. A less reputable agent may shy away from detailed scrutiny or be hesitant to fully engage in this process, signaling a potential mismatch for your travel planning needs.

This step is fundamental in establishing a trust-based relationship with an agent who is equipped and eager to craft your ideal travel experience.

When interviewing potential travel agents, consider asking questions such as:.

  • How long have you been in the industry?
  • What training and certifications do you possess?
  • Do you specialize in a particular destination or travel niche?
  • Have you traveled to my preferred destination?
  • What are the steps to working with you?
  • What is the best method for communication?
  • Are you available to me while I am traveling?

Remember, comparing travel agents against each other by leveraging their services is inappropriate. Take the time to research, subscribe to their newsletters, and have conversations with a few before making your choice.

Once you’ve committed and paid a travel agent’s fee, using the information they provided as leverage with another agent is improper., by remaining vigilant and discerning throughout the interview process, you can identify and avoid potential pitfalls, ensuring that you entrust your travel plans to a reputable and competent professional., not all travel agents are the same..

At Sphera Travel, we receive numerous inquiries from travelers seeking guidance in choosing the right agent.

We may not be the ideal travel agent for everyone. Our approach isn’t about fitting everyone into a single mold; instead, we celebrate the diversity within the travel industry, emphasizing a sense of community over competition. Therefore, if we sense that our services align differently with your needs, we’re more than willing to recommend other trusted travel agents. Ultimately, the choice is yours to find a travel agent who truly matches your travel aspirations.

We advise travelers to invest time in finding an agent whose expertise and approach match their travel goals and preferences.

What to expect during an initial consultation..

Sphera Travel's tips for your initial call when finding a travel agent.

What to expect from the travel agent:

It’s essential to have a clear understanding of what constitutes exemplary service. Here are some key expectations to consider when evaluating potential agents:

  • Destination Knowledge: A competent travel agent should demonstrate comprehensive knowledge about your desired destination. While firsthand experience is valuable, it’s unrealistic to expect agents to have visited every locale they recommend. Instead, reputable agents leverage personal experience, industry resources, and partnerships with destination specialists to provide informed recommendations.
  • First-Hand Experience : Ideally, your travel agent should possess first-hand experience of the destinations they recommend. Personal familiarity with the locale allows them to offer invaluable insights, insider tips, and genuine recommendations based on their experiences.
  • Client-Centric Approach: A hallmark of a stellar travel agent is their commitment to understanding your interests, preferences, and travel style. They should actively engage in dialogue, asking probing questions to ascertain your unique requirements and tailor their recommendations accordingly.

Our best advice is to trust your gut!  If you are on the phone with a travel advisor and you feel they have the expertise for the trip you would like to plan if they answer your questions and make you feel comfortable and excited about your trip – they are most likely the person for you!

Communication is key: setting expectations with your travel agent.

Effective communication is the cornerstone of a successful partnership between you and your chosen travel agent in travel planning. Contrary to popular belief, travel agents are not mind readers; they rely on your input to tailor the perfect itinerary that aligns with your desires and preferences. Here’s why being upfront and transparent is paramount:

Specify Your Preferences

  • Clearly articulate your travel aspirations, including your desired destination, budgetary constraints, must-see attractions, and any deal-breakers. Providing these details empowers the agent to curate an experience tailored to your preferences.

For example, if your heart is set on a sun-soaked, all-inclusive getaway in Riviera Maya, Mexico, it’s essential to convey your expectations. With over 1200 accommodations, your input ensures the selection of a resort that perfectly suits your needs and preferences.

Cultivate a Long-Term Relationship

  • Recognize that the relationship between you and your travel agent is an evolving partnership that thrives on mutual understanding and trust. While immediate rapport may not always be instantaneous, consistent and open communication fosters a deeper connection over time.
  • By sharing candid feedback about your likes, dislikes, and non-negotiables, you empower the agent to refine their recommendations and tailor future experiences to align with your preferences. This collaborative approach enhances the overall quality of your vacation and strengthens the bond between you and your agent.

Follow-up After Your Trip

  • Once you’ve returned from your journey, take a moment to share your experiences with your travel agent. This feedback is invaluable to express your gratitude or concerns and help them refine their future recommendations and services for you and other travelers. It’s a great way to close the loop on your adventure and start dreaming about the next one.

Respect Boundaries

  • While building a close relationship with your travel advisor is vital to crafting personalized trips, respecting their time and professional boundaries is essential. Understand their working hours and preferred communication methods. This mutual respect ensures a healthy, productive relationship, allowing them to serve you effectively without burnout or overextension.

As you collaborate with your travel agent, remember that effective communication lays the foundation for a seamless and enriching travel experience.

By articulating your desires clearly, you pave the way for unforgettable adventures that reflect your unique preferences and aspirations.

Signs and warning signals of a poor travel agent :.

  • Insistence on cash payments only.
  • Unexplained hidden fees, additional charges, and mysterious costs.
  • Failure to provide terms and conditions upfront before starting the travel planning process.
  • Difficulty in contacting them or receiving timely responses.
  • Lack of legitimate certifications or qualifications in the travel industry.
  • Agents who strongly recommend destinations or packages that don’t align with your interests without a sound reason should raise concerns. Your trip should mirror your preferences, not the agent’s motives.
  • Caution against Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) schemes where the “travel agent” focuses more on recruiting you to sell travel packages than planning your vacation. This focus on expanding their network can overshadow the quality of your travel planning.  Catchphrases often used are that you can “pay yourself to travel” or “become a travel agent with no experience” or “side hustle”.
  • While influencers may showcase appealing destinations, it’s important to scrutinize whether they possess the necessary planning expertise and knowledge to tailor a vacation that meets your needs. Instead, join an influencer on a trip planned by a travel agent.

Activate your BS detector, trust your instincts, and remain vigilant for signs of dishonesty or manipulation. It’s crucial to remember high-pressure sales tactics or offers that seem too good to be true . A reputable travel agent prioritizes transparency and integrity over deceptive practices.

Business models within the travel agency industry vary, with some agencies opting not to charge upfront service fees. However, clients need to recognize that they are paying for the expertise and time of a professional.

Clients should exercise caution when encountering travel agents who declare that ALL agents operate without charging fees. Such assertions may create a misleading impression of a universal standard within the industry. While some agents may offer their services without upfront fees, it’s essential to acknowledge the diverse practices and business models in the travel agency landscape.

Clients should be vigilant for hidden costs or undisclosed fees that may arise during the booking process, ensuring full transparency and accountability throughout their travel planning journey.

As of 2022, 62% of travel agents charge professional fees, and 89% say charging fees has been a success for their business.

Bottom Line:

Prioritize agents who exhibit active listening, responsiveness, and a genuine commitment to meeting your needs. Look for agents who go above and beyond to accommodate your requests, offering proactive suggestions and alternative options when necessary.

While face-to-face interactions are ideal, virtual phone or video conferencing can facilitate meaningful dialogue and collaboration.

Aligning yourself with a travel agent who embodies these qualities, you can confidently embark on your journey, knowing that your vacation experience is in a great travel agent’s capable and caring hands.

Travel advisors still exist. Here's how the right one can help make your dream trip a reality

Travel advisors remain available to assist with planning trips.

In 1996, Microsoft established Expedia , one of the world’s first online travel agencies. Suddenly, people who had been using the World Wide Web for email and chat rooms also could use it to make air, car and hotel reservations.

It seems almost quaint now. Back then, however, it was a revelation.

Travel agents were on notice: Like cobblers, blacksmiths and lamplighters, they were about to become obsolete.

But travel agents — or travel advisors, as they call themselves — didn’t disappear. Instead, they adapted.

“One of the things I hear all the time is, ‘Oh, I didn’t know travel advisors still existed,’” says Laurie Marschall, owner of Lakáma Luxury Travel in Phoenix. “There aren’t as many travel agencies with storefronts, per se — most of us work remotely — but we are very much still here.”

Learn more: Best travel insurance

It’s a good thing, because demand for travel advisors has soared in the wake of COVID-19, according to the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA). Before the pandemic, just a quarter of travelers (27 percent) always or often used a travel advisor, according to ASTA. After the pandemic, 44 percent say they’re more likely to use one.

ASTA President and CEO Zane Kerby points to Americans’ growing appetite for travel — there are more than 143 million U.S. passports in circulation today compared with just 7.3 million in 1989 — but also to pandemic-related difficulties with trip planning.

“Consumers have awakened to a very challenging travel ecosystem, so it pays to have a really good travel professional on your side who understands all the new and ever-changing restrictions,” explains Kerby, who asserts there’s at least one more reason travel advisors are making a comeback: The Travel Channel and social media have made travelers crave trips that are more elaborate, more active and more exotic — and, therefore, more complicated to plan. “For fairly simple trips and trips to places you know well, (online travel agencies like Expedia) are a really great resource. But for other trips, travel can be a very complex web of suppliers and schedules. ... Travel professionals can help you navigate all that.”

If you’ve never worked with a travel advisor, there are a few things you should know before you reach out:

What they do

These professionals are in-the-know trip planners, according to Atlanta-based travel  advisor Stacey Gross of Favorite Place Travel . She says most engagements begin with a consultation during which your advisor will learn as much as possible about who you are, where you want to go, what you want to do and how you like to travel.

For instance, do you like to explore or be waited on? Do you prefer physical activities like hiking and biking, or cultural activities like dining and theater?

“Each vacation is the result of time and money set aside for a specific purpose. A travel advisor ... will help craft a trip to suit those needs and desires,” Gross says.

Travel professionals will curate potential hotels and activities for you to choose from based on your time and budget, plan a detailed itinerary and make reservations on your behalf. They will often secure special rates or upgrades that you typically wouldn’t be able to obtain on your own.

“All of that is before the trip even begins,” Gross continues. “During travel, a trusted travel advisor will be available or will have provided their traveler with a contact in-destination who is able to assist should the need arise.”

What they charge

While initial consultations typically are free, Marschall and Gross say travel advisors often charge a planning fee, which they should disclose up front. They also receive commissions from hotels, tour operators and other travel vendors — but shouldn’t let potential commissions influence your itinerary.

“Our members have agreed to a code of ethics, and that means they put their customers’ interests above their own,” explains Kerby, who says ASTA has a consumer affairs department that mediates disputes with travel advisors who violate its code of ethics.

How to find one

You can search for a  travel professional based on your destination and other criteria at the ASTA-run website TravelSense.org , or through a consortium of independent advisors like Signature Travel Network , Virtuoso or Ensemble Travel Group .

Gross says the best approach, however, is to seek recommendations from family and friends and be clear about your expectations with your travel consultant.

“Ask questions,” she advises. “Be thorough about what you want in this working relationship. And communicate that you are looking for a long-term travel partner, not just someone who can book this one hotel room for this one trip. You want to ... share your bucket list and make it happen together.”

When Do You Need a Travel Agent?

It’s become second nature for many of us to book our airline tickets, car rentals and hotel stays ourselves. But there are certain times when you really need to hire a travel agent.

Planning things like ground transportation for groups, tours, theater visits, theme parks and concerts to coordinate with your itinerary can take up tons of time.

A Retired Travel Agent Explains When You Need To Hire One

I’m a retired travel agent. A few years ago, I spent countless (too many) hours planning hotel nights, rail travel and tours to see as much of Ireland as I could in one fell swoop over just over two weeks.

Even I’ll admit that the time spent was a bit excessive. It wasn’t that I tried to over-plan and fill each and every day; I just wanted to know that all of the experiences would appeal to my style of travel (no big bus tours, ample free time, no evenings planned).

If I hadn’t been a travel agent myself, I probably would have hired one for my Ireland visit. Here are just some (a dozen) times when having someone working on your trip can be super helpful:

  • Travel agents can guide an inexperienced traveler through taking a first trip overseas , when traveling to a destination where tourism is less developed or when t he trip is to multiple cities .
  • An agent can help you out of jams should you miss a flight connection , face a canceled flight or need assistance when natural disasters strike that affect your plans.
  • A travel agent can often help find the best prices on tours and cruises with exclusive promotional offers and deals. Estimated savings can be anywhere from $500 to $1,000 on international airfare and tours.
  • An agent will inform you about any necessary documents you may need: visas, vaccinations and restrictions (if you’re traveling to a religious or conservative country).
  • A travel agent can offer travel insurance options to cover just about anything that could happen on your trip.
  • An agent is key when you want to embark on a trip of a lifetime such as the inaugural sailing of a spectacular ship, a Disney vacation or The Passion Play at Oberammergau, to name just a few.
  • When your trip involves coordinating with a group of friends or family members who live all across the county, an agent can keep things organized.
  • Cruise experts can help maneuver through the many options based on your needs. Some ships offer refundable versus non-refundable rates and guaranteed cabins versus cabins with free perks. Which option is best for your needs? That’s where an agent’s expertise is key.

How Much Does Using a Travel Agent Cost?

Can a travel agent help save time with trip planning? Yes, most definitely!

Can a travel agent save you money? Probably, but there will usually be some expenses on the front end.

You should expect an agent or agency to collect fees for certain services. Ask your agent for specifics. Here are some averages:

  • Airline tickets : $25-$50 for domestic round-trips or multi-city; higher for an international ticket (per itinerary)
  • Cruises : $30-$50 per person
  • Tours : $100 per person up to 8 nights; $175 9-13 nights; $250 14 or more nights
  • Last-minute : $100 per person (for trip arrangements for travel within two weeks of departure)

Some travel agents don’t charge any fees. That’s because they earn commissions through partner vendors.

Certain agencies may accept a planning deposit for custom multi-city trips or trips that require various modes of transport and coordination.

You might be asked for such a deposit (around $100 in most cases) to prevent you from booking elsewhere after the agent has done all the research. A portion or all of that deposit may be refunded after the trip has been completed.

How To Find a Good Travel Agent

So how do you find a good travel agent?

Ask family, friends and co-workers who love to travel for their recommendations. Chances are they use the services of an agent.

Seek out agents/agencies with American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) accreditation. On the ASTA website , you can filter agents by their specialty.

Each year, Travel + Leisure’s editors compile the “ A-List ,” a curated selection of the world’s best travel agents and destination specialists. The information is organized by regions of the globe as well as by specialty trips such as fly-fishing, scuba diving, safaris and honeymoons.

Final Thought

Most trips probably don’t require the services of a travel agent, but if you’re planning something that involves any of the complications outlined above you might benefit from the help.

These are people who do this for a living, so sometimes it’s best to leave the planning to a professional.

Confession: I’m a big fan of travel agents (whoops, sorry, travel advisers ), even though I could technically book all my trips through websites and apps. And despite the fact that many of us might consider this industry old-fashioned and out-of-date, research shows that travelers, and millennials in particular, are once again turning to these specialists to help plow through TripAdvisor detritus. If you’re wondering: how much does a travel agent cost, and why would I book with one anyway? Read on.

How to Know If You Need a Travel Agent

Once you’ve come around to the idea of hiring a travel agent, ask these three questions before booking:

  • Is this a domestic trip or one that involves traveling to a part of the world you’ve never been? If it’s the former you don’t need a travel agent.
  • Can I get a better deal by using a travel agent? (This question requires you pricing out your trip with and without one.)
  • Is this a big-budget, special-event kind of trip? If the answer is yes, go with a travel agent.

The Pros of Using a Travel Agent

They can find crazy deals..

This is literally their job. If they have been in the travel business for many years, they likely have supplier relationships in place that can help leverage better deals for you. Many travel agents specialize in locations (i.e., cruise vacations in Europe). Some travel agents offer package deals, with more savings passed on to you then booking the trip on your own—that is good news to your wallet.

They will be your advocate.

One of the best ways to utilize a travel agent is as an advocate should something derail on your trip. They can help you with lost luggage, in the case of natural disasters, if you get stuck in a location before your trip, etc. They are there to help you get your trip back on track.

They’ll take care of the little things.

I love my travel agent, and I love all the extras she provides when we use her services for a trip. For instance, when we traveled to the Bahamas, she made sure there was a nice bottle of champagne and strawberries in our room on our arrival, and she also upgraded our room free of charge. While this certainly is not a guarantee when you use a travel agent, there are a lot of added-value extras you can expect when you use a travel agent. Why? Because travel agents know you don’t have to use them to book your trip, and they want to say thank you.

They’re true experts.

Most travel agents have been working in the industry for years now, and it’s their job to stay on top of travel trends and upcoming hot destinations. When I spoke with my travel agent about a trip to Europe recently, she offered a few alternate destinations. I was not thinking about the destinations she suggested, but the alternatives offered great activities, culture, food, interesting boutique hotels, and more options for less money than my original destination.

They don’t usually cost extra.

It’s a myth that working with a travel agent will automatically cost you more; most get paid via commissions from the hotel or outfitter. Sure, some travel agents do charge a fee for putting together an itinerary, but most will credit you that fee if you end up booking the trip through them. Make sure you know all the potential fees before you use a travel agent, and do not hesitate to negotiate away.

The Cons of Using a Travel Agent

They’re not going to help with cheaper airfare..

Back in the day, you would use a travel agent to book every aspect of your trip. However, with so many options to find low-cost airfare, like Google Flights , Scott’s Cheap Flights , and  Skyscanner , booking your own flights is easy and cost-effective. Most travel agents cannot score discounted flights, and many travel agents will not even bother. Follow these tips on how to find the cheapest flights possible , instead.

They’re not you.

This may seem obvious, although it’s still important to consider. A travel agent not only finds you the best deals, but they also offer suggestions for activities, restaurants, and more. This is great if you’re someone who doesn’t like to research these things, but you run the risk of working with someone who doesn’t get your personal preferences (maybe they lean toward road tours rather than technical singletrack). Do your own research first, and come up with a list of activities that you want to do. Once you have that list, pass it along to your travel agent to see if they can rustle up any deals as they book.

How to Find a Great One

One of the best ways to find a reputable travel agent is to get referrals from your friends and family. Anyone that has used that travel agent for a previous trip and enjoyed their service is someone worth checking out. As with anything, I always suggest talking to at least two different travel agents to see who you feel most comfortable with. Remember, they are there to work for you.

Know your travel budget before you reach out to a travel agent. Likely, this will be the first question they ask you and will help steer them toward the best destinations for that budget. If you are traveling somewhere that’s specialized, like going on that once-in-a-lifetime African safari , find a specialist that knows that region inside and out. They will usually have the best deals and relationships with hotels and activity companies in that area.

How Much Does a Travel Agent Cost?

Usually, the cost of hiring a travel agent to organize a trip for you is fairly minimal. Many agencies charge a flat fee of around $100, and others may charge a certain small percentage of your trip. Most of their take-home profits come from the hotels, wholesalers, resorts, and businesses they work with, but be sure to as your travel agent about fees upfront and before you start working with them to plan your next dream vacation. (No one likes hidden fees and surprises.)

4 scenarios when you should use a travel agent

Andrea M. Rotondo

Editor's Note

If you're a points-and-miles-wielding expert traveler, you may not immediately think of using a travel agent to book your getaways . However, there are times and situations when using these services can be of great benefit.

A good travel agent can be a game-changer when it comes to helping you book your ideal trip and receive the best services once you arrive at your destination. Travel agents can also be of great assistance when things go wrong, especially during this summer of excessive flight delays and cancellations .

Agents can often secure the best room in a hotel or the top cabin on a cruise ship. Sometimes they can even secure complimentary upgrades, breakfast benefits or food and beverage credits, and free spa treatments during your stay.

When it comes to making the right decisions about when to travel, what sights to see and which guides to hire, agents can act as advisors. An excellent travel agent can be the difference between an OK experience and the trip of a lifetime.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

Here are four times when you may want to use a travel agent:

Booking a hotel with extras

Your travel agent can become a trusted friend over time. Before you're ready to turn over all your travel planning to a travel adviser, test the waters by collaborating on a simple trip request. You'll want to see how the agent operates, communicates and arranges extra perks and deals. Avoid a complex or elaborate request on the first go-round.

Start by having a travel agency book your hotel arrangements with a few specific requests for extras baked in, such as airport transfers or spa services .

hire a travel agent

Start with an agent who is part of a major travel consortium such as Virtuoso, Travel Leaders Network, Ensemble Travel Group or Signature Travel Network. Each of these networks provides a suite of benefits to travelers who book with them. If you're familiar with the perks of the American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts program or the Chase Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection , you'll know what we mean. Extra benefits for booking can include space-available upgrades, free breakfast, additional food and beverage credit, a free spa treatment or a round of golf.

You can work with a travel agency that fits your style. This may be someone from a large company based in a major city with dozens of agents, or it may be someone from a more boutique option such as the family-owned and operated Ourisman Travel. (Ourisman Travel is a travel consultancy affiliated with Brownell Travel, one of the oldest travel agencies in the U.S., and also a member of the Virtuoso network.)

What's nice about Ourisman and any Virtuoso agency is that you can have your travel agent do all the work. You can also use the Virtuoso booking tool to make quick, easy reservations. Once your reservation is in the system, your agent swings into action to let the hotel know a VIP is on the way and arranges for any extras, whether it's a Virtuoso perk or one from a credit card program.

It's also possible to stack benefits. If you book your trip with The Platinum Card® from American Express , your agent can secure your Amex FHR benefits; you may also be entitled to additional perks from the agency, its travel consortium or the hotel, cruise line or tour company.

When you're short on time

Not everyone has weeks to spend crafting the ultimate itinerary and keeping watch on every flight deal (although TPG can help you here) . Fortunately, you can rely on a savvy travel agent to step in and plan your vacation when your time is crunched . Otherwise, you might not be able to pull off the travel arrangements on your own, or you might end up spending more for your trip than you should.

When facing a planning time crunch, look for an agent who specializes in the type of trip and destination you have in mind. If you're looking for a beach villa on a Caribbean island , find a travel advisor who has experience booking this sort of trip.

hire a travel agent

One example is Villas of Distinction, which has been around for more than 25 years and has a vast network of properties. Your travel advisor there can offer advice on which properties are best suited to your needs, what's available and how to book the villa. You can also use your American Express Membership Rewards points to book a villa through the agency, an added benefit to finding a good application of points.

Agents specializing in villa rentals usually have strong networks on the ground, so they can assist with chores such as stocking the villa with groceries, booking a chef or securing the best masseuse on the island for poolside treatments.

When your travel plans are specific and complex

The more complex and specific your travel goals are, the more experts in that destination or trip style can help you.

For example, every year, travel guru Wendy Perrin puts together a WOW List that features experts in the travel-booking field. The agents, advisors and destination specialists on Perrin's list aren't booking budget cruises and all-inclusive vacations for people as a side hustle. The agents on the WOW List are the real deal with plenty of expertise in their subject areas.

Say you want to explore Africa and go on a safari, but you don't know where to begin. Consult the WOW List and you'll see she recommends individuals with an encyclopedic knowledge of the continent.

hire a travel agent

The WOW List features advisors who can create custom safaris in East, Central and South Africa as well as niche destinations like Madagascar. The website provides a synopsis of the agents' expertise as well as links to reviews and insider guides written by Perrin and her team.

This is an excellent resource for learning about the best attractions, cutting-edge travel trends or finding out-of-the-ordinary experiences, and shows how contact with local agents, rather than anonymous trip reviews, can be a great advantage in planning a trip.

Related: Everything you need to know about going on safari in Africa

When you're looking for value

Travel agents often have access to room rates and cruise fares not available to the general public. This is especially true of agents who specialize in specific cruise lines. When a cruise line needs to fill a sailing, it may reach out to its top agents to extend special fares for their clients. You'll only hear about these offers if you have a top agent who sells cruises on the lines you love.

Related: Why now might be the cheapest time to plan a cruise

For example, Keene Luxury Travel, a member of the Signature Travel Network, has relationships with all the top luxury cruise lines, especially Regent Seven Seas. As a result, your agent can offer shipboard credits, special fares for solo travelers, deals for families traveling with children and more. The agency also has its own KLT Rewards program. With KLT Rewards, you'll get cash back on every sailing, about 10 days before you set sail. Plus, if you book a trip hosted by the agency's owners, you'll get a bump in the amount of your reward for booking with them.

hire a travel agent

The best part about working with specialty agents like those at Keene Luxury Travel? You can stack deals. For example, you can book a hosted trip to get the usual 5% KLT booking reward, plus an enhanced reward for booking a group trip. On top of that, you could also receive the onboard credit that's a Signature Travel Network perk.

Bottom line

Whether you're booking a weekend getaway in a U.S. city or planning an around-the-world extravaganza that includes an African safari , Antarctica cruise and a stay in an igloo hotel , consider using a travel agent. An agent can help get you on the right trip, at the right time for the right price.

They can help find the best rooms, book services you didn't even know existed and tie all the pieces together on a complicated itinerary.

A travel agent can be particularly beneficial if you don't have the time to do all the research yourself, or if you're looking for help in getting the best deal. It's also helpful to use an agent if your trip targets destinations or itineraries that can benefit from local experts,

If there's ever a problem during a vacation — which seems to happen more often than not these days — it's great to have a problem-solver who is just one phone call or email away.

Why Hire A Travel Agent? 8 Ways You Will Save Money, Time, And Stress

  • February 28, 2022

My family and I are planning international travel to Italy in just a few months. As you can probably imagine, planning an international trip for a family of 5 is no easy feat.

I’ve planned a few international trips for me and my boyfriend before, but I’ve never planned a trip for more than just the two of us – and I really wanted to make sure that this trip to Italy is done right.

As I started thinking more and more about my whole family being in Italy, and how important this trip is (i.e. this will be my Dad’s very first time in Europe and his first time seeing where his late mother was born and grew up), I realized that I could really use some help.

I started having thoughts like – What if we miss something? What if we can’t figure out how to get from point A to point B? What if we end up spending way more money than we need to?

As I was thinking about all these moving parts, I started getting a little anxious about the trip and realized it might be beneficial to call in some professional help.

I have never used a travel agency before, and quite frankly, I wasn’t even sure anyone still used travel agencies! But I put a poll on my Instagram stories and one of my followers had some good news.

She mentioned a local-to-me travel agency that they had personally used and recommended, and I decided to call that travel agency to at least see what they were all about.

I found the travel agency’s website , filled out their contact form, and within a few days received a call from them. A nice, pleasant woman was on the other end of the call, and after just a few minutes, I could tell that I was on the phone with someone who had a lot of prior experience and would really help me take care of the little things (and the big things!) that I was worried about.

I was hesitant to use a travel agency at first (relinquishing control of planning this trip had me a little worried!) but over time I have become more than comfortable with our travel agent, and not to mention, very grateful.

why hire a travel agent - ways travel agents can help you with your travel

Why hire a travel agent? This article will tell you exactly why you should hire a travel agent to save you money, time, and stress when planning your next trip, big or small.

Here are 8 Reasons Why You Should Hire A Travel Agent

We hired a travel agent for a 17 day trip to Italy. After reading this post, you’ll see why I am a big fan of travel agents!

Stress Saver: Navigating Covid or other major world events

Is something happening in the world that makes you hesitant to travel? Unforeseen events, natural disasters, or something else? Your travel agency might be able to help you navigate it.

Each country has their own requirements when it comes to Covid and in particular, Covid testing.

For example, just a few weeks ago, if you wanted to travel to London, you had to take a Covid test before flying to London and then take another test within a certain number of hours of arriving in London.

Since then, those requirements have been totally or partially lifted, but this is a good example of how requirements are constantly changing, and how you really have to stay on top of things.

Trying to plan an international trip for 5 people while also navigating the Covid testing requirements felt a little overwhelming and ended up being the main reason why I decided to hire a travel agency for help.

Once I communicated my concerns to my travel agent, she said they’d absolutely guide us through the Covid testing process and whatever other help we needed to navigate Covid during our travel – and I was immediately relieved!

Travel agents can help you navigate any Covid testing requirements (or other worldly events) that you may face so that you don’t have to navigate it all on your own.

Money Saver: Travel Agencies Have Partnerships

Travel agencies have partnerships with other travel companies, with the potential to save you TONS of money, get you better deals, and better experiences in general.

Another cool thing about travel agencies is that they have partnerships with hotels and other companies around the world which can help get you the best deals that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to get on your own.

For example, if you book hotel accommodations or excursions with a preferred partner of your travel planner, you may be able to save hundreds of dollars on that accommodation/excursion because your travel agency can get better deals!

Another example of this is in cases where your travel agency may be partnered with another travel agency in another country all together. This is a great benefit because who better to help plan your trip to another country than a travel agency that is located in that country?

In our case, our travel agent is partnering with a bunch of people in Italy to help us plan very specific trips and excursions and it’s been wonderful because they have such a vast knowledge of the area and how we should get around since they are located there.

The travel industry is very connected, and they are happy to use their worldwide connections to help you have the trip of a lifetime.

Time Saver: Travel Agencies Will Handle the Planning/Research

Travel Agents will handle all of the planning and research for you, if you’d like.

This one might seem obvious, but when you hire a travel agency, they really will figure out all of the logistics for you giving you much greater flexibility to handle your own personal life in the process.

If you need to take planes or trains, or you want to schedule private transfers to pick you up from the airport, you need hotel rooms, or you want to schedule a half day excursion or an afternoon trip to a museum, your travel agency can organize all of this for you.

All you have to do is give the travel agency the big details, like where you want to go and what you’d like to do when you get there.

Then, you’ll approve the plans presented to you by your travel agency if you think what they proposed is a good idea and fits your preferences, and your travel agency will book your travels for you with the credit card or payment option that you provided them with.

If you don’t like certain plans or aspects of your trip that are proposed to you by your travel agent, you can tell your travel agency this and they can make changes based on your preferences.

Travel agencies allow you to sit back and relax while your trip is planned for you, making hiring a travel agency one of the best ways to save you time and stress.

why hire a travel agent - ways travel agents can help you with your travel

Stress Saver: Travel Agents are the experts – they’ve been where you want to go and can give helpful recommendations

Who better to ask about travel plans than the experts themselves who have been where you want to go?!

Like I said before, travel agents typically have a lot of travel experience themselves, and more than likely they’ve even been to the places you are trying to go!

I couldn’t believe the extensive knowledge that my travel agent had. And even still, for the places we are going that she hasn’t been to before, she’s been able to ask her colleagues because they had been there before.

When I told my travel agent that we were travelling to London, she was able to tell us exactly how we should get from the airport to our hotel, the exact route we should take to get to some of the sights we want to see, and even where we should get coffee near our hotel – all because she has traveled to London many times herself. I couldn’t imagine better customer service! Her experienced truly simplified our travel plans.

Travel agents can be trusted to plan your trip because they have real-life experience with where you’re trying to go – or they know someone who does.

Money Saver: Travel Agencies and Travel Advisors may not be as expensive as you imagine

I was pleasantly surprised at how affordable our travel agency was as the pricing was one of my biggest concerns.

Another good reason to hire a travel agency: it’s a money saver.

At first, I was really worried about having to pay for a travel agent – it was one of my biggest concerns. I knew this trip for my family was not going to be cheap, and so I didn’t want to add on a ton more in travel agent fees.

Never having hired a travel agent before, I also didn’t know how it worked in general. Was there a flat fee? Was there an additional fee every time we committed to an arrangement that they set up?

Turns out in our case of group travel, it’s a flat planning fee of $75 per person and that’s it, no matter how long the travel is.

I believe the reason the travel agency can keep costs manageable for their clients is because since they have so many partnerships all over the world, they are able to get a cut of the sale when you decide to stay in a hotel, for example, of one of the companies your travel agency has a partnership with.

Travel agencies can be affordable and don’t have to cost you a ton of money. They are truly the best value.

Money Saver: You can give your travel agency a budget to work within

Your travel agency won’t spend carelessly – you give them a budget to work within and they will adhere to that! They may even give you various options.

Another key piece of all of this is that the travel agency you hire will work within your budget. If you do not want to spend more than a particular amount of money on the trip, the travel agent will do their best to work within those constraints and adhere to the needs of the client (you!).

If they think your budget will work, they’ll say so. Likewise, if they think your budget is tight for what you are trying to do, they will also tell you that. At the end of the day, they will work hard to fit within the constraints of your budget.

You don’t have to be worried about paying an excessive amount for your trip. A travel agency will work within your budget.

Stress Saver: Flexible Payment Options

Need a little more time to pay? Your travel agency likely has flexible payment options.

Depending on your travel agency, you may not have to immediately pay for everything that is booked – which can be convenient if you don’t have the cash to pay for everything right away.

This will depend on the policies of your travel agency, but it may also depend on the hotels/excursions/add-ons that you book.

For example, many hotels do not require payment until you arrive at the hotel for your stay. Often you have the option of paying ahead of time, but if you need a little time to save up money for the stay, hotels that allow you to pay when you arrive can be very helpful!

Likewise, for many excursions, you may be able to put a deposit down ahead of time instead of paying for the entire trip. For example, if an activity you want to do costs $2,000 total, you may only be required to put down 20% of that (or $400) at the time you book the activity with your travel agent.

Then, you’d pay the rest of the amount when you get closer to your trip, or on the day that you take the excursion, for example.

These options are a great way to buy time to save up money in case you don’t have the cash ready months before your actual trip.

Money Saver: Added Value you wouldn’t be able to find on your own

Our travel agency offered so much value, exclusive benefits, and travel hacks, and travel packages. I would never have been able to plan such an amazing trip on my own.

One of the things my family thought about doing was taking a day trip to Pisa when we were in Florence. I wasn’t sure if it’d be possible for my travel agent to arrange, but I mentioned it just in case they’d be able to swing it.

Without hesitation, my travel agent reached out to the third party that they work with in Italy, and a half-day excursion was planned that included a driver and tour operators that picked us up from our hotel.

In a matter of a few days (and with no work on my end) my travel agent was able to plan this excursion. I’m not sure how long it would have taken me to find a company that could plan this for us and coordinate times, etc.

This was such a relief and so impressive that they were able to plan this so quickly. It goes to show that their long-standing connections with agencies in other countries is invaluable!

The Travel Agency We Used: Avondale Travel

This is the travel agency we used and LOVED with a very reputable travel agent. I cannot tell you how much peace of mind they brought me and my family!

In conclusion, hiring a travel agency was one of the best things that I have done so far.

Hiring a reliable travel agency has saved us so much money, time, and stress. I was nervous to trust someone else to plan a trip that is so special for me and my family, but I can confidently say that because we’ve hired them, that this trip will be 1000x better than anything I could have planned on my own.

Update in 2023: I am so thankful for our travel agency at Avondale Travel  (located in Jacksonville, Florida) and our travel consultant, and I highly recommend their services. It was a great deal overall, my family had a great time, and our trip would not have been half as lovely without the help of Avondale Travel and the help of a travel agent.

You can find them on social media or at their web site .

I want to travel to Asia for an upcoming trip with my partner soon, and I am definitely thinking about using Avondale Travel’s services again.

P.S. If you’re looking for a new, carry-on suitcase, I highly recommend this one:

9 Reasons to Hire a Travel Agent for Your Honeymoon

For a trip as momentous as your honeymoon, leave the planning details to the pros

Jaimie Mackey was the real weddings editor at Brides from 2013 to 2015. She also worked as a luxury wedding planner and produced over 100 high-end weddings and events in Colorado

Jelena Jojic Tomic / Stocksy United

You and your S.O. may have traveled together in the past, but your honeymoon isn’t just any trip. It’s most likely longer, more exotic , and more expensive than your previous vacations, meaning it deserves just as much careful attention as your wedding day. That’s where a travel agent comes in. Hiring a travel agent for your honeymoon will help make planning this once-in-a-lifetime trip almost as enjoyable as the trip itself.

Beyond just booking flights and hotel rooms, they can give you insight into the most romantic destinations , the best activities and excursions, and those memory-making moments that you might not experience otherwise. So let’s let the pros themselves walk us through all the reasons you should hire a travel agent for your honeymoon.

They're Actually Affordable

This luxury service doesn’t have to eat up your entire budget before you’ve even boarded a plane. Each agent will price differently, with some charging initial fees, some charging fees on certain services, and others not charging any fees at all (and are instead compensated by the hotels and other travel suppliers they work with). “I personally never charge a fee when booking hotels for my clients, but do have a flight service charge of $50-$70 per ticket to cover the flight specialist assisting with the booking,” says luxury travel advisor Addie Bell of Jetset & Travel . Adds Alexandra Stockton of Alexandra Stockton Luxury Travel , “I also don’t charge a fee, but even if the agent you choose does charge a nominal fee, he or she will have access to benefits and upgrades that will give you an even more luxe experience, plus insight and relationships to help you get the best deal and save money, so that small fee is going to be worth it.” For example, Katie Frederick Jacobson, founder of Ever After Honeymoons , does charge fees, explaining: “I take on a very limited amount of clients at a time to be able to provide a more customized and detailed service, so I charge a $100 fee upfront. If clients want a more involved itinerary that includes activities, special experiences, and spa appointments , I charge an additional concierge fee.”

Of course, you’ll want to get an understanding of charges and fees before you’ve hired an agent or started booking, just like you would with any other wedding vendor . “Ask any travel agent you’re inquiring with to explain any fees that are included, whether their own or those of their partner service providers—especially if you’re going to be charged before the itinerary is completely to your liking,” says Tom Marchant, co-founder of Black Tomato .

Booking With Them Comes With a Lot of Perks

Sure, you can reserve a hotel room online yourself, but having a travel agent do the booking means you’ll get to enjoy the perks and upgrades they’ve secured with the properties where they have strong relationships. “Using a travel agent is the easiest way to get VIP treatment.” Stockton says. From special requests and preferences to in-room amenities (think a bottle of your favorite wine waiting when you arrive at your honeymoon suite), a travel agent will work behind the scenes to make your trip extra special. “When booking through me, I’m also able to offer my clients perks like daily breakfast, resort credits, priority for available upgrades, and better prices than those listed online,” Bell explains. As Jacobson says, you can’t VIP yourself—but your travel agent can do it for you.

Outsourcing Your Planning Makes Your Life Easier

“Using a travel agent will save you time and money, as well as include added value through additional amenities,” says Bell. “I handle all of the logistics for my clients—giving them time to focus on planning their wedding instead.” And by working with a reputable travel agent affiliated with a name-brand agency, you’ll also get the VIP treatment that comes along with the relationships they’ve built with properties around the world.

They'll Help You Find the Perfect Honeymoon Destination...

Not sure where you want to go? A great travel agent has traveled extensively themselves, meaning they can point you in the direction of the best destination for you and your partner. “We have personally scouted over 80 countries in search of the world’s best hotels, restaurants, activities, and attractions. Our extensive first-hand expertise allows us to curate the perfect itinerary,” says Kristen Korey Pike, founder & CEO of KK Travels Worldwide . “The internet is an overwhelming place, and it’s hard to know which resources to trust,” adds Stockton. “Travel advisors have first-hand knowledge and connections all over the world, so they can help you navigate it all. Remember: A hotel’s great reviews doesn’t mean it will be right for you.” A travel agent will get to know your preferences, your wants, and your needs, then use that to suggest an itinerary that you and your partner will love—from the perfect hotel to exciting tours and delicious restaurant reservations.

...And Make Sure You’re Taking the Trip of a Lifetime

“A top-tier travel agency should have first-hand local knowledge of the destination you’re interested in to avoid tourist traps and obvious tick box experiences,” says Marchant. “At Black Tomato, our travel agents are regionalized destination experts, who will work with you to curate a completely customized trip with bespoke experiences that speak to both you and your partner's shared interests and passions—the kind that you can't find via a basic Google search.” They’ll create an itinerary that reflects your travel style and personalities (just like all that personalization you’ve put into your wedding), even if it takes 15 iterations of itineraries and multiple destination changes to find the perfect trip for you.

There's a Lot They Know That the Internet Won’t Tell You

Is there anything worse than arriving to your amazing beachfront resort only to realize half the property is under construction, or to discover that the suite you reserved at a downtown hotel has views of the nearby parking garage instead of the city skyline? “A travel agent knows which rooms are in the best location, when the hotel pool is being re-tiled, and all sorts of other details you can’t find online, meaning we can either make the most of your stay or guide you toward a different property,” Stockton explains. A great travel agent will also connect you with the very best guides, tours, and local attractions. “We vet all of our private guides, pre-arrange transfers to avoid frustrating delays, and work closely with a local team to ensure seamless travel from inception to execution,” says Marchant.

They're Also Great Resources Once You’re Already Traveling

If you’ve ever had a delayed flight, missed a connection, or found yourself stuck in a foreign country longer than expected, you know how stressful travel snafus can be. But having a travel agent on-call can help you navigate those challenges with ease. “We have relationships with GMs at so many luxury hotels, meaning we can really quickly address any problems you might have with your lodging,” says Bell. “And if you booked your flights through a specialist, things like changed itineraries or delays can be quickly handled with our ability to make changes, book new flights, or connect you to VIP lines instead of the hours-long hold for customer service.” That’s because your flight specialist will be watching your flights throughout your trip, ready to step in and find a solution before you even know there’s a problem. A travel agent will also be able to alert anyone else who needs to know about your travel changes, from the driver meeting you at the airport to the tour guide who wouldn’t otherwise know you’re going to miss your train from London to Paris.

They're Well Connected to Other Experts

Sure, booking a beachfront resort or a boutique hotel in Copenhagen may not need the help of a travel agent (though hopefully by now you’re planning to hire one anyway), but particularly exotic, specific, or logistic-heavy destinations are infinitely easier to navigate with the help of a pro. “Working with an agent that specializes in a particular niche is definitely helpful,” says Jacobson. “I can speak to a mix of destinations depending on the vibe you’re looking for, and then partner with incredible suppliers based in destinations like India or Africa who can provide local contacts and expertise.”

And using a travel agent can often be the only way to get connected to these sought after and highly experienced pros. “Many of the best-specialized travel companies only work with travel advisors, meaning you wouldn’t have access to their services if you were booking on your own,” says Stockton. “It’s these locally-based groups that enable me to offer the best services and experiences to my clients, provide contacts in the country where they’re traveling, and be even better equipped to solve any problems that might arise in real time.” Consider that destination-based partner an extension of your travel agent. “The special contacts we build while traveling allow us to provide a personal touch that cannot be obtained through any credit card company or online booking engine,” Korey Pike says.

How and Where to Find a Great One

Not sure where to find a great travel agent? Ask your wedding planner . “I partner with a number of planners to work on room blocks, bachelor and bachelorette getaways, and honeymoons,” says Bell. So if you love your planner, she or he may know a travel agent you’ll love just as much.

And in this day and age, all the top travel agents have curated Instagram accounts showcasing where they’ve been, where they love to go, and where they’re sending clients—so you can get a feel for whether their travel style is right for you before you even send an inquiry.

What We Know—and Don’t Know—So Far About the Trump Rally Gunman

Follow to Donald Trump Rally Shooting- Bethel Park, PA

T wenty-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks was identified by the FBI on Sunday as the shooter behind the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Butler, Pa., on Saturday evening that left one bystander dead and two others injured.

Crooks was killed at the scene by a Secret Service sniper, and investigations continue into his motives, which remain unclear.

Here’s what we know so far.

‘No indication of any mental health issues’

The FBI says that Crooks was not known to the agency prior to the incident.

In a call with reporters Sunday night, the FBI special agent in charge, Kevin Rojek, said there was “no indication of any mental health issues” regarding the shooter.

During a private congressional briefing on Wednesday, the New York Times reported, the FBI revealed that the gunman’s online search history included a query on “major depressive disorder.”

Limited social media presence

Rojek also said authorities “have not yet identified an ideology” associated with Crooks. The agency has interviewed more than 100 people , including Crooks’ family and friends, and cracked into his two phones using the Israeli technology Cellebrite, according to the Washington Post , but has yet to find evidence of his motivations.

President Joe Biden on Sunday urged people to refrain from making assumptions. “Let the FBI do their job, and their partner agencies do their job,” he said.

Crooks reportedly had a limited social media presence, though a spokesperson for the platform Discord said in a statement shared with TIME that the company “identified” a “rarely utilized” account that appears to be linked to Crooks. The spokesperson said that the company is cooperating with law enforcement but that it “found no evidence” the account was used “to plan this incident, promote violence, or discuss his political views.”

Fox News reported that the FBI told Senators on Wednesday that Crooks had written on gaming platform Steam: “July 13 will be my premiere, watch as it unfolds.”

Registered Republican, donor to progressives

State public voting records show that Crooks was a registered Republican, while Federal Election Commision documents show that a donor with the same name and address gave $15 to ActBlue, the Democratic fundraising apparatus, on Jan. 20, 2021—the date of President Joe Biden’s inauguration. The donation was earmarked for the Progressive Turnout Project.

A spokesperson for the Progressive Turnout Project told CNN that “the email address associated with the contribution only made the one contribution and was unsubscribed from our lists 2 years ago.” They added: “We unequivocally condemn political violence in all of its forms, and we denounce anyone who chooses violence over peaceful political action.”

During the Wednesday congressional briefing, the FBI said it found no indication Crooks had any strong partisan political views and that he had searched images of public figures including Trump and Biden as well as FBI director Christopher Wray and Attorney General Merrick Garland, according to the New York Times . Crooks reportedly also looked up dates of Trump’s public appearances and the upcoming Democratic National Convention .

From an affluent Pittsburgh suburb

The FBI identified Crooks’ hometown as Bethel Park, a suburb of Pittsburgh about an hour south of where the Trump rally was held. Dan Gryzbek, a county council member representing the area, described the neighborhood where Crooks’ family lived as “pretty firmly middle class, maybe upper-middle class” to the New York Times . According to the Census Bureau , Bethel Park’s population is 93% white with a 1.3 times higher per capita income than the rest of Pennsylvania.

The address of Crooks’ family home was in a district that Biden won in 2020 with 52% of the vote to Trump’s 46%. Crooks’ father is a registered Libertarian and his mother is a registered Democrat, according to voter records, CNN and the Times reported. Both parents are licensed professional counselors, according to state records.

Sources told the Washington Post that both Crooks’ parents have health issues and appeared to investigators as loving parents who may not have been closely attuned to their son’s activities.

Seems to have acted alone

“While the investigation to date indicates the shooter acted alone,” the FBI said Sunday, “the FBI continues to conduct logical investigative activity to determine if there were any co-conspirators associated with this attack. At this time, there are no current public safety concerns.”

The FBI repeated that Crooks appeared to act alone during the agency’s briefing to Congress on Wednesday. Director Wray also said there’s no known foreign nexus, in response to a question from Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) in reference to recent reporting about an unrelated Iranian assassination plot targeting Trump, PunchBowl News reported.

Used an AR-15-style rifle purchased legally by his father

Multiple law enforcement officials have said that the firearm used by Crooks in the shooting was an AR-style rifle that was legally purchased by Crooks’ father. Crooks’ family is cooperating with investigators, Rojek has said.

NBC News reported Monday that more than a dozen other guns were found in a search of the Crooks’ family home.

A law enforcement official told CNN Monday that on the morning of the Trump campaign rally, Crooks purchased a five-foot ladder and 50 rounds of ammunition before driving to Butler. It’s unclear if Crooks used these in the assassination attempt.

A rifle enthusiast since he was a teen

According to photos and videos of the scene of the shooting, Crooks was wearing a shirt associated with Demolition Ranch, a popular gun channel on YouTube. (Matt Carriker, the host of the channel, said in a video statement on Monday that he was “shocked and confused” and offered condolences to the victims of the shooting . “This channel was never meant to incite violence or hate—it never has, it isn’t, and it never will be a channel that does that,” he said.)

Crooks had tried out for his high school’s junior varsity rifle team when he was a freshman, CBS reported, but classmate Jameson Myers said Crooks didn’t make the team and never tried out again.

Jameson Murphy, another former classmate, told the New York Post that Crooks “was such a comically bad shot he was unable to make the team and left after the first day.” Another classmate also told the Post that the rifle team coach had concerns about Crooks based on “some crass jokes” Crooks made and how he interacted with others. “Our old coach was a stickler, he trained Navy marksmen, so he knew people. He knew when someone’s not the greatest person,” the classmate said.

Crooks did, however, belong to a local gun club, the Clairton Sportsmen’s Club , which has a 200-yard rifle range among its facilities. The club confirmed Crooks’ membership in a statement provided to multiple media outlets that admonished the violence and offered condolences to the victims but said it couldn’t offer any more details as investigations remain ongoing.

The day before the shooting, Crooks visited a shooting range to practice firing, according to a law enforcement official speaking to CNN.

Amid speculation that Crooks may have had a military background, the Pentagon told the Associated Press that “there is no military service affiliation for the suspect with that name or date of birth” in their databases across military branches.

Left behind explosive materials

The FBI said that, when it searched Crooks’ home and vehicle to collect additional evidence, suspicious devices were found and have since been “rendered safe” by bomb technicians.

According to CNN, investigators found a bulletproof vest, three fully loaded magazines, and two remote-controlled explosives in his car, which was parked near the rally. An unnamed law enforcement official told CNN Crooks was found with a detonator on his body, and his car’s trunk contained a metal box of explosives connected with wires to a receiver. He also had a drone, which, the Wall Street Journal reported, he used to aerially scout the site of the rally just hours before the shooting.

Sources told Fox News that law enforcement also found bomb-making materials in Crooks’ home, while CNN reported that investigators found an additional remote-controlled explosive device, another bulletproof vest, and a 3D printer in his home—and that Crooks had received deliveries of multiple packages, including some marked as potentially hazardous, in recent months.

A nursing home aid with an engineering science degree

Crooks graduated from the Community College of Allegheny County with an associate degree in engineering science just over two months ago, a school official confirmed to the New York Times .

Crooks worked as a dietary aid at the Bethel Park Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. “We are shocked and saddened to learn of his involvement,” Marcie Grimm, the facility administrator, said in a statement to multiple media outlets, adding that Crooks “performed his job without concern and his background check was clean.”

A colleague at the nursing home described Crooks as caring and apolitical at work to CNN . “It’s hard seeing everything that’s going on online,” the colleague said, “because he was a really, really good person that did a really bad thing, and I just wish I knew why.”

Officials told CNN that Crooks normally worked on Saturdays but had requested time off on the day of Trump’s rally, telling his boss that he had “something to do.”

A quiet, lonely nerd in high school

Bethel Park School District confirmed in a statement that Crooks graduated from Bethel Park High in 2022. It offered its condolences to victims of the shooting and said it is cooperating with law enforcement investigations.

According to the New York Times , Crooks’ only record of disciplinary problems was being sent to detention once in the eighth grade for chewing gum.

Former peers, speaking to media outlets, painted a portrait of a social outcast who kept a low profile.

“He didn’t really fit in with everybody else,” classmate Sarah D’Angelo told the Wall Street Journal . “He was there but I can’t think of anyone who knew him well,” another classmate told BBC .

Crooks was “a loner” who “would sit alone at lunch,” classmate Jason Kohler told ABC News . He would regularly wear camouflage outfits and was “bullied” for the way he dressed, Kohler told NBC News .

“There was definitely chatter about him just looking a little different,” another classmate, who asked not to be named, told CNN . “Almost a retro nerd vibe.”

Summer Barkley, another classmate, told BBC that Crooks was “always getting good grades on tests” and was “very passionate about history.”

Zach Bradford, another classmate, described Crooks to the New York Times as “incredibly intelligent” and said his views in high school seemed “slightly right leaning.”

Most—but not all—who knew Crooks expressed disbelief at his involvement in the shooting at the Trump rally.

Jim Knapp, Crooks’ since-retired guidance counselor at the school, described Crooks to the Times as “a very good student” and said “not once did he ever get in trouble.”

“He never outwardly spoke about his political views or how much he hated Trump or anything,” D’Angelo added to the Wall Street Journal .

“I was just, like, shocked—I just couldn’t believe he did something that bold, considering he was such a quiet and kept-to-himself kind of person,” the anonymous classmate told CNN.

“I will say he was definitely nerdy, for sure, but he never gave off that he was creepy,” classmate Mark Sigafoos told CBS. “He seemed like he wouldn’t hurt a fly.”

But Julianna Grooms, who graduated a year after Crooks, told the Wall Street Journal that Crooks stood out for his awkwardness. “If someone would say something to his face, he would just kind of stare at them,” she said. “People would say he was the student who would shoot up high school.”

10 Reasons to Use a Travel Agent

Many consumers might not realize what they are missing out on when they travel and don't use a travel agent . Here are just a few things that your travel agent can do for you.

 Buena Vista Images/Digital Vision/Getty Images

Travel agents know the market and, if they listen to what you want, will be able to match you with a better product than you can find on the Internet.

If something goes wrong on your trip, a good travel agent will go to bat for you—no matter who is at fault—and try to get your vacation back on track.

Travel agents have access to a variety of tools that the average consumer is not able to use or doesn't know about. They can sometimes get you a better seat on an airplane, added amenities at hotels, room upgrades, event tickets, and plan activities for you.

Convenience

 Van Loh/Getty.

Your time is valuable and you shouldn't have to spend it searching for the right vacation. A travel agent can do that for you. They can match you with the vacation that you actually want, not the one that you saw on television. There is a difference between travel inspiration and actual travel desires. Destinations may look good on TV but not actually be ideal for you personally. Travel agents can help you define what it is you want to get out of a vacation.

Relationships

webphotographeer / E+/Getty Images

As you develop a relationship with your travel agent, they are able to target the right trips for you without even having a conversation. Ideally, a simple phone call or email could result in your next vacation—already planned.

Often, travel agents can save you money based on their supplier relationships—or at least match the price you find—while saving you time and effort. There are also hidden savings built into trips. A travel agent will likely book transfers for you, included in the price. Sometimes a package that you book yourself won't include those, making the experience appear cheaper.

Added Value

There are a lot of value-adds that consumers don't even know about that can be added by a travel agent. Ever wonder why the couple in the cabin next to yours got champagne and you didn't? They probably used a travel agent.

Better Destinations

Travel agents have inside information on the best times to go to crowded destinations and they sometimes even know what the new "it" destinations are going to be before the masses. Want to get there first? Use a travel agent.

Exclusive Access

Francesco Iacobelli/Getty Images

Some tours and experiences are only available through a travel agent. Many companies offer a lot of components and simply want to make sure a customer is right for their experience—exotic tours, treks, private jet products are often only available through an agent.

Because They Are Awesome

Bruce Bennett/Getty Images News/Getty Images

Travel agents are some of the most well-rounded, funny, personable and knowledgeable people you'll meet. They come from more backgrounds than you can even count—they have been professors, hotel owners, tour guides, bus drivers. They all have one thing in common: They are passionate about sharing the world with you. Take advantage of their services.

'A fundamental security failure': How did a gunman open fire on a Trump rally?

How does a gunman, in plain view of some spectators, manage to open fire on a former president at a campaign rally protected by federal and local law enforcement?

That is the frightening and unanswered question facing the country — and security officials — after Donald Trump said he suffered a graze wound on his right ear while he was speaking in a field in Butler, Pennsylvania, and left the stage with a bloodied head.

Secret Service personnel shot and killed the gunman, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, immediately after he opened fire, the FBI said. A spectator was killed and two additional spectators were injured, but it was not immediately clear who shot them.

The assassination attempt, in which Crooks fired multiple shots at the stage from a roof outside the venue’s security perimeter, appeared to be the result of a grave lapse, perhaps the biggest since President Ronald Reagan was shot and wounded outside a Washington hotel in 1981.

Security experts said it was difficult, and perhaps impossible, to eliminate every threat, particularly with long-range weapons and outdoor events.

But some said routine precautions should have prevented the shooter from getting onto the nearby roof.

Steve Nottingham, a former SWAT commander in Long Beach, California, called Saturday’s shooting “a fundamental security failure.”He has worked security details for visiting world leaders, including presidents, and now trains officers on how to respond to critical incidents. He pointed at likely breakdowns in the pre-event scouting and real-time monitoring of places a gunman could shoot from.

“They were behind the curve, because they should have had those places covered ahead of time,” Nottingham said.

Jim Cavanaugh, a retired special agent in charge with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives who has been on Secret Service details, said he was surprised that the shooter was able to occupy an elevated position within rifle range of the rally site.

“Whenever I’ve been with them, every single high ground is taken by them or the local SWAT police,” Cavanaugh said. “There’s nobody allowed walking on rooftops. They command the high ground.”

He said a high-powered rifle like an AR-15 can hit targets 200 yards away. Trump was about 148 yards from the rooftop where the shooter was found dead, NBC News found, based on an analysis of Google Earth images.

Cavanaugh added: “Having been on Secret Service details, it’s amazing to me that somebody was on an elevated position that they didn’t know about.”Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens defended the Secret Service at a news conference after the shooting.

“It is incredibly difficult to have a venue open to the public and to secure that against any possible threat against a very determined attacker,” Bivens said. “That’s a huge lift.”

“The investigation will really give us an opportunity to take a look at where any failures occurred and what can be done better in the future,” he added.

The Secret Service did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The FBI is leading the investigation, including its crisis response team members and evidence response technicians, it said in a statement Saturday evening.

Donald Trump Injured During Shooting At Campaign Rally In Butler, PA

Last month, as the presidential campaign heated up, the Secret Service said it was increasing the size of the detail assigned to Trump. The protection was bulked up “to ensure the highest level of security for not only the event sites but the travel in between events,” Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said at the time.Perhaps the first sign that something was going wrong as Trump spoke Saturday came when spectators said they noticed a man with a rifle bear-crawling on a nearby roof. One recalled trying to get the attention of law enforcement.

“The police are down there running around on the ground. We’re like, ‘Hey man, there’s a guy on the roof with a rifle,’” the witness told BBC News . “And the police were like, ‘Huh, what?’ Like they didn’t know what was going on. We’re like, ‘Right here on the roof. We can see him from right here. We see him. He’s crawling.’”

A couple of minutes later, the man opened fire, the witness said.

Kevin Rojek, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Pittsburgh field office, said at a news conference that law enforcement was not aware of the man’s presence on the rooftop until he started firing.

“It is surprising,” Rojek conceded when pressed by a reporter on the number of shots the gunman managed to fire.

He referred questions about advance security precautions to the Secret Service.

In the front row of the rally, attendees heard a series of pops and saw Secret Service agents jump on the stage. One, who identified herself as Erin, told NBC News that she saw blood on Trump’s ear. She did not fear for her own safety, she said. “We were only concerned about him,” she said, referring to Trump.

Trump said in a post on Truth Social a couple of hours later that a bullet “pierced the upper part of my right ear.”

“I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin,” Trump wrote. “Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening.”

Donald Trump Injured During Shooting At Campaign Rally In Butler, PA

Former Secret Service agent Evy Poumpouras said it is impossible to eliminate every potential threat in a situation like Saturday’s.Outdoor rallies pose enormous security challenges given the availability of high-powered weapons, Poumpouras said.

“Somebody can be out in the distance and really engage your target from a long range, and there are weapons out there that allow you to do this,” said Poumpouras, who protected multiple presidents, including Barack Obama and George W. Bush, during her 12 years with the Secret Service.

“Let’s say you hunkered this whole area down. You’ve got the magnetometers; you’ve got the tactical element. Everything is locked and tight. How do you secure that outer perimeter? How far do you go? And can you cover everything? That’s a problem.”

She added: “Even if somebody is in an elevated position or not, how do you secure all of those elevated positions when you have weapons with the capabilities that are able to shoot long distances? This is what you are up against.”

Jillian Snider, a retired New York City police officer who was often detailed to political events, said it is routine for law enforcement to do a perimeter check extending a few hundred yards ahead of such an event.

“That doesn’t mean that someone can’t sneakily make their way to one of those positions afterward, especially if it was someone who had done some preplanning,” said Snider, an adjunct lecturer at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. “There are a lot of places in that area to hide, and you can’t monitor every possible position.”

“Someone who is that driven to do something like this will find a way to try and get the job done,” she added.

An Assassination Attempt That Seems Likely to Tear America Further Apart

The attack on former President Donald J. Trump comes at a time when the United States is already polarized along ideological and cultural lines and is split, it often seems, into two realities.

Follow the latest news on the Trump assassination attempt.

When President Ronald Reagan was shot by an attention-seeking drifter in 1981, the country united behind its injured leader. The teary-eyed Democratic speaker of the House, Thomas P. O’Neill Jr., went to the hospital room of the Republican president, held his hands, kissed his head and got on his knees to pray for him.

But the assassination attempt against former President Donald J. Trump seems more likely to tear America further apart than to bring it together. Within minutes of the shooting, the air was filled with anger, bitterness, suspicion and recrimination. Fingers were pointed, conspiracy theories advanced and a country already bristling with animosity fractured even more.

The fact that the shooting in Butler, Pa., on Saturday night was two days before Republicans were set to gather in Milwaukee for their nominating convention inevitably put the event in a partisan context. While Democrats bemoaned political violence, which they have long faulted Mr. Trump for encouraging, Republicans instantly blamed President Biden and his allies for the attack, which they argued stemmed from incendiary language labeling the former president a proto-fascist who would destroy democracy.

Mr. Trump’s eldest son, his campaign strategist and a running mate finalist all attacked the political left within hours of the shooting even before the gunman was identified or his motive determined. “Well of course they tried to keep him off the ballot, they tried to put him in jail and now you see this,” wrote Chris LaCivita, a senior adviser to the former president.

But the Trump campaign seemed to think better of it, and the post was deleted. A memo sent out on Sunday by Mr. LaCivita and Susie Wiles, another senior adviser, instructed Trump team members not to comment on the shooting.

Either way, the episode could fuel Mr. Trump’s narrative about being the victim of persecution by Democrats. Impeached, indicted, sued and convicted, Mr. Trump even before Saturday had accused Democrats of seeking to have him shot by F.B.I. agents or even executed for crimes that do not carry the death penalty.

After being wounded at the rally, Mr. Trump, with blood staining his face, pumped his fist at the crowd and shouted, “Fight! Fight! Fight!”

What exactly drove the gunman, who was quickly killed by Secret Service counter snipers, remained a matter of speculation. Identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks , 20, from Bethel Park, Pa., he was a registered Republican but had also given $15 to a progressive group on Mr. Biden’s Inauguration Day, more than three years ago. The authorities said they were still investigating his motive.

The shooting came at a time when the United States was already deeply polarized along ideological, cultural and partisan lines — split, it often seems, into two countries, even two realities. More than at any time in generations, Americans do not see themselves in a collective enterprise but perceive themselves on opposite sides of modern ramparts.

The divisions have grown so stark that a Marist poll in May found that 47 percent of Americans considered a second civil war likely or very likely in their lifetime, a notion that prompted Hollywood to release a movie imagining what that could look like.

The propulsive crescendo of disruptive events lately has led many to compare 2024 to 1968, a year of racial strife, riots in the cities and the assassinations of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy. Protests over the Vietnam War helped prompt President Lyndon B. Johnson to drop out of his race for re-election that year.

Until now, there had been one important difference. “Of all the similarities between 1968 and 2024, the lack of political violence this year has been one of the key areas where the years diverge,” said Luke A. Nichter, a historian at Chapman University and the author of “The Year That Broke Politics,” a history of 1968. “That is no more.”

Michael Kazin, a historian at Georgetown University, said political violence had a long history in America. “As in 1968 — or 1919 or 1886 or 1861 — the violence that just occurred is rather inevitable in a society as bitterly divided as ours,” he said. “And of course there’s actually less violence in politics now than there was in those other years.”

Yet not since President Abraham Lincoln was shot by a Confederate sympathizer at Ford’s Theater has an assassination attempt against a president or major presidential candidate so sharply exacerbated the partisan divide.

Presidents James A. Garfield, William McKinley and John F. Kennedy were shot to death by lone gunmen who were upset with them for one reason or another, but the killings did not become sources of schism between the Republican and Democratic Parties. The same was true with Dr. King and Robert Kennedy’s assassinations, as well as shootings that missed President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt and President Gerald R. Ford.

Gov. George C. Wallace, Democrat of Alabama, was shot at a campaign event during his 1972 presidential run by a man who wanted to be famous. The attack left the segregationist governor paralyzed but eventually contributed to his evolution and disavowal of past racism. John Hinckley attacked Mr. Reagan out of an obsession to impress the movie star Jodie Foster.

In recent years, political violence in America at levels below the presidency has become increasingly partisan. Representative Gabrielle Giffords, Democrat of Arizona, was critically wounded in a mass shooting in 2011, prompting angry criticism of Republicans for fomenting hate. Representative Steve Scalise of Louisiana, now the Republican majority leader, was shot and injured during a congressional baseball game practice in 2017 by a supporter of Senator Bernie Sanders, Independent of Vermont.

An armed man was arrested outside the home of Justice Brett Kavanaugh in 2022 and told the authorities that he wanted to kill the conservative Supreme Court justice because of his positions against abortion and gun control. Later that year, a man wielding a hammer broke into the San Francisco house of Representative Nancy Pelosi, then the Democratic speaker, and beat her husband, Paul Pelosi .

The most famous recent case of political violence before this weekend was the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, by supporters of Mr. Trump trying to block the certification of Mr. Biden’s election victory. The Capitol Police investigated 8,008 cases of threats involving members of Congress last year. While most of them were not serious, it was the second-highest total in the department’s history and has prompted the hiring of more prosecutors.

Many of these recent cases have led to not so much soul-searching as blame-setting. After Ms. Giffords was shot, Democrats assailed Sarah Palin, the former Republican vice-presidential candidate, because Ms. Giffords’s district had been among 20 singled out underneath digitized cross hairs on a map circulated by Ms. Palin’s political action committee, although there was no evidence the gunman knew about or was driven by the map.

House Democrats impeached Mr. Trump for instigating the Capitol attack with his inflammatory language at a rally beforehand. The former president has a long history of encouraging violence . He urged supporters to beat up protesters at rallies, cheered a Republican congressman for body-slamming a reporter , called for looters and shoplifters to be shot, made light of the attack on Mr. Pelosi and promised pardons to Jan. 6 rioters. When some of his supporters chanted “Hang Mike Pence!” on Jan. 6, Mr. Trump told aides that maybe the vice president deserved it because he had defied efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Republicans turned the tables on Democrats this weekend, arguing that if Mr. Trump was responsible for provocative rhetoric, then Mr. Biden should be as well. Speaking with donors on Monday, the president said he wanted to stop talking about his poor debate performance and instead “put Trump in a bull’s-eye.” He described his strategy as “attack, attack, attack.”

“The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs,” Senator J.D. Vance, Republican of Ohio and a front-runner to be named Mr. Trump’s running mate, wrote on social media two hours after the attack on Saturday. “That rhetoric directly led to President Trump’s attempted assassination.”

Mr. Scalise, also the victim of a political attack, agreed. “For weeks, Democrat leaders have been fueling ludicrous hysteria that Donald Trump winning re-election would be the end of democracy in America,” he said. “Clearly, we’ve seen far-left lunatics act on violent rhetoric in the past. This incendiary rhetoric must stop.”

Representative Mike Collins, Republican of Georgia, wrote on social media that “ Joe Biden sent the orders ” and urged the local prosecutor to “immediately file charges against Joseph R. Biden for inciting an assassination.” But not all hands are clean. Mr. Collins once ran a campaign ad in which he fired a rifle at Ms. Pelosi’s agenda and shot a cardboard cutout of so-called RINO Republicans.

Some Republican leaders took a more measured approach. Speaker Mike Johnson, speaking on “Today” on NBC, said on Sunday that Mr. Trump had “been so vilified and really persecuted by media, Hollywood elites, political figures, even the legal system” and cited Mr. Biden’s “bull’s-eye” comment.

“I know he didn’t mean what is being implied there, but that kind of language on either side should be called out,” Mr. Johnson said . But he emphasized that “both sides” have “got to turn the temperature down in this country.”

Mr. Biden did not directly respond to criticism of his language during three televised appearances since the shooting, but he flatly condemned the attack and called Mr. Trump to wish him well. Like Mr. Johnson, he said that Americans must “lower the temperature” and that “it’s time to cool it down.” During a rare Oval Office address, he added: “Politics must never be a literal battlefield, and God forbid a killing field.”

The danger is if political violence becomes normalized, just another form of the endless partisan wars. A study published in May found that 11 percent of Americans said violence was sometimes or always justified to return Mr. Trump to the presidency, and 21 percent said it was justified to advance an important political objective.

But Garen J. Wintemute, the director of the Violence Prevention Program at the University of California, Davis, and the lead author of the study, said it was important to remember that most Americans still rejected political violence.

“It’s the job of that majority to make their views known, over and over again, and as publicly as possible,” Dr. Wintemute said. “A climate of intolerance for violence reduces the chance that violence will occur. The question before us as a nation is, ‘Will violence become part of American politics?’ Each of us as an individual needs to answer that question, ‘Not if I can help it.’”

A travel agent's job is to ensure their clients have the best travel arrangements. Using their expertise, they offer advice and essential details about your trip, make your reservations, book flights and hotels, and manage your travel plans overall. Any hiccups regarding your accommodations are handled by them, and they are the best at finding money-saving deals. Travel agents prioritize your needs, like your vacation schedule and budget.

Their goal is to provide peace of mind throughout the trip-planning process so you can get the most out of your vacation.

What credentials do you need to be a travel agent?

You don't necessarily need a degree to become a travel agent, but getting some training within the field could be in your best interest. This not only makes you an attractive candidate to employers and agencies who may require a form of certification , but also helps you appear more qualified, which can help further your career in the long run.

Even though there might not be a degree in "travel agency" per se, you can opt for a related program like business, economics, or hospitality instead.

What do you need to become a travel agent?

There are different ways to become a travel agent, but anyone hoping to break into the field should definitely keep the following three points in mind.

Decide what kind of travel agent you want to be.

Having a specific focus on the kind of travel experience you want to provide allows you to build the knowledge and resources to best help those specific clients. Suppose you want to work in corporate travel: Building your skills according to your niche clientele and field will help you sharpen the skills you need to develop your expertise.

Learn about the travel industry and its trends.

The travel agency field is constantly shifting, so it's important to stay up-to-date on industry changes and trends to know what you should be offering clients. People's preferences are ever-changing, so knowing what's hot and what's not is crucial. Spend time learning which places are popular and unpopular based on the season, or which restaurants are staple visits. This shows a solid and up-to-date understanding your clients will appreciate.

Build your communication and interpersonal skills.

A large part of being a travel agent is advising your clients and earning their trust, which doesn't happen overnight. Presenting yourself as knowledgeable and approachable can encourage them to trust your judgment and recommendations. This is especially important if you're not working with a travel agency, because you'll have to rely more on your brand and relationships instead of leaning on a company's reputation.

Maintaining a healthy balance of communication between you and your clients is also essential, which means scheduling phone calls, in-person meetings, keeping up with emails, and any other form of communication your client prefers.

Get certified if you can

Getting a certificate can be pricey and cost hundreds of dollars . So, if this option is not feasible for you, that's understandable. However, while certification isn't a requirement to become a travel agent, it can certainly help you throughout your career. Here are a few certificate programs to consider.

Certified Travel Counselor

This Travel Institute certificate requires at least five years of experience and a Certified Travel Association certification. This course focuses on marketing and building consumer relationships. CTC costs $550 to complete the course and $600 for the CTC Fast Track.

Certified Travel Industry Executive

CTIE is also backed by the Travel Institute and requires at least five years of field experience. This $550 program includes courses on travel business, marketing management, bookkeeping, and travel law.

ASTA Verified Travel Advisor

This certificate is given by the American Society of Travel Advisors and teaches applicants about the legalities of travel and how to solidify relationships with consumers. The nine-course program also focuses on ethical travel advising, agency law, and travel agency compliance.

For ASTA members, the course is $399, and for nonmember independent contractors, it's $598. Travel Advisor nonmembers pay the steepest price, which is $729, and $179 for recertification.

How much do travel agents make?

According to Indeed , travel agents make an average of $53,924, and salaries can range between $30,131 and $96,506, depending on where you live. But other factors can affect an agent's earning potential, like working independently instead of for a travel agency.

A travel agent's income also depends on their area of travel. The Hotel Agency Review 2023 report revealed that corporate and luxury travel agents earn much more than agents who focus on Disney and cruise trips.

Your experience level can also impact your earning potential, as agents who have worked in the field longer are typically viewed as more qualified.

Do travel agents get discounts on flights?

Being a travel agent doesn't automatically mean you get tons of discounts and deals, but they do have access to perks that can help make planning trips easier and less expensive. Travel agents have the inside scoop on reduced rates because of their relationships with hotels and airlines. As a result, agents share these negotiated prices with their clients to help them save. Agents can, of course, also benefit from this insider knowledge and save money on their own trips.

Thanks to their agents, clients can enjoy luxury accommodations at high-end hotels like Hyatt Privé, Hilton Impresario, Marriott STARS&Luminous, Four Seasons Preferred Partner, and Mandarin Oriental Fan Club, to name a few. These perks range from spa services and later checkout times to room upgrades and complimentary breakfast.

How do you make money as a travel agent?

There are several ways a travel agent can make money in their field beyond selling travel packages or working for an agency.

Travel agents can charge a service fee, which is a base pay clients cover along with any other charges.

Travel agents can also make commissions from their contracts with hotels, tour/excursion companies, cruises, car rental services, and airlines. Add-ons like insurance can also help boost an agent's income, if their client wants it.

Booking group tours can increase a travel agent's earnings because their commission is based on how much their clients purchase, so more people means more accommodations. For example, booking travel for destination weddings or family reunions is an excellent way to book multiple hotel rooms. It's such a lucrative strategy that some agents make group booking their niche, because managing just a few a year can bring in a substantial profit.

The Secret Service is investigating how the man who shot Trump got as close as he did

The U.S. Secret Service is investigating how a gunman armed with an AR-style rifle was able to get close enough to shoot and injure former President Donald Trump at a rally Saturday in Pennsylvania, a monumental failure of one the agency's core duties.

The gunman, who was killed by Secret Service personnel, fired multiple shots at the stage from an "elevated position outside of the rally venue," the agency said.

An Associated Press analysis of more than a dozen videos and photos taken at the Trump rally, as well as satellite imagery of the site, shows the shooter was able to get astonishingly close to the stage where the former president was speaking. A video posted to social media and geolocated by the AP shows the body of a man wearing gray camouflage lying motionless on the roof of a manufacturing plant just north of the Butler Farm Show grounds, where Trump's rally was held.

The roof was less than 150 meters (yards) from where Trump was speaking, a distance from which a decent marksman could reasonably hit a human-sized target. For reference, 150 meters is a distance at which U.S. Army recruits must hit a scaled human-sized silhouette to qualify with the M16 assault rifle in basic training. The AR-15, like the shooter at the Trump rally had, is the semi-automatic civilian version of the military M16.

Trump is fine after an assassination attempt at his rally

The FBI early Sunday identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pa.

The Secret Service didn't have anybody at a late-night news conference where FBI and Pennsylvania State Police officials briefed reporters on the shooting investigation. FBI Special Agent in Charge Kevin Rojek said it was "surprising" that the gunman was able to fire at the stage before he was killed.

Members of the Secret Service's counter sniper team and counter assault team were at the rally, according to two law enforcement officials. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss details of the investigation.

The heavily-armed counter assault team, whose Secret Service code name is "Hawkeye," is responsible for eliminating threats so that other agents can shield and take away the person they are protecting. The counter sniper team, known by the code name "Hercules," uses long-range binoculars and is equipped with sniper rifles to deal with long-range threats.

U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas said his department and the Secret Service are working with law enforcement to investigate the shooting. Maintaining the security of presidential candidates and their campaign events is one of the department's "most vital priorities," he said.

"We condemn this violence in the strongest possible terms and commend the Secret Service for their swift action today," Mayorkas said. "We are engaged with President Biden, former President Trump and their campaigns, and are taking every possible measure to ensure their safety and security."

Calls for an investigation came from all sides.

James Comer, a Kentucky Republican who is the House Oversight Committee chairman, said he contacted the Service Service for a briefing and called on Director Kimberly Cheatle to appear for a hearing. Comer said his committee will send a formal invitation soon.

"Political violence in all forms is unamerican and unacceptable. There are many questions and Americans demand answers," Comer said in a statement.

U.S. Rep. Ritchie Torres, a New York Democrat, called for investigating "security failures" at the rally.

"The federal government must constantly learn from security failures in order to avoid repeating them, especially when those failures have implications for the nation," Torres said.

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers, a Democrat, posted on X that he and his staff are in contact with security planning coordinators ahead of the Republican National Convention set to begin Monday in Milwaukee. "We cannot be a country that accepts political violence of any kind — that is not who we are as Americans," Evers said.

The FBI said it will lead the investigation into the shooting, working with the Secret Service and local and state law enforcement.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said the Justice Department "will bring every available resource to bear to this investigation."

"My heart is with the former President, those injured, and the family of the spectator killed in this horrific attack," Garland said in a statement. "We will not tolerate violence of any kind, and violence like this is an attack on our democracy."

5 Reasons to Use a Travel Agent Now More Than Ever

  • October 19, 2022

In one of my essential travel tips , I mentioned that it might be a good idea to hire a travel agent , more commonly known as a travel advisor. I know what you’re thinking – a travel agent, really ?

When I say “travel agent,” you probably picture some guy in a tweed suit sitting behind a desk with generic travel posters behind him and an uninspired globe on his desk. He also probably looks like he belongs in the 1960s or 1970s because, really, who needs help booking a vacation when the Internet both offers infinite booking platforms and a bevy of information? There are websites dedicated to points hacking, finding the BEST deals, providing free itineraries for every destination imaginable, and so much more. Why bother paying someone to do something you can do yourself?

However, times are changing yet again and travel has become a more complicated pastime than it once was. Think about how out of date many of those websites are. Google is pretty slow to update its first page results, so you could have an article that’s full of half-closed attractions and restaurants come up in the number one spot. Imagine being somewhere like Italy, ready for lunch at a restaurant with the most salivating dishes pictured online, and you walk up to the front door only to find it’s been completely closed down.

And that’s just a restaurant no longer being open. Think of all the other complications that might arise these days – border changes, new entry requirements, changes in restrictions… Don’t get me wrong, travel is very feasible, but it can feel overwhelming to try and keep up while also planning your trip and living your normal life.

I like to think I know my way around the globe, and even I rely on a travel agent. I have a family of four and run a business! Knowing there’s a real, breathing person to ensure my trips go smoothly takes a huge weight off my shoulders and allows me to better enjoy these amazing places I get to visit.

If you’re on the fence, here are some compelling reasons why a travel agent is necessary now more than ever no matter how seasoned of a traveler you are.

Reasons to Use a Travel Agent

1. they save you time on planning.

family-traveling-at-the-airport

Think about all that goes into planning a trip to a brand new destination. Figuring out where to stay, what to do, how to get there, any cultural expectations… It can take hours and hours of research! When you add in jobs, kids, and general day-to-day life – who really has the time to spend hours perusing websites and internet forums trying to figure out which neighborhood exactly is the best for a first-time visitor?

Every city and country is different, and while it can be fun, it can also be overwhelming. Travel agents do this day in and day out and will already have experience planning a trip to whichever destination you choose. With just a few questions to get to know your vacation style, they can put together an amazing itinerary and all you have to do is enjoy it.

2. You have a real person watching your back.

Travel advisor working on a computer

Have you ever needed to talk to a customer service representative and been met with the frustrating experience of automated voice messages? Or you go to the help page and are met with a ton of jargon and maybe an email that you never seem to get a reply from. It’s frustrating! Not to mention when you do get someone on the phone, it usually comes after waiting for hours and even then they often feed you lines you’ve already read.

In a time when travel is more complicated with ever-changing border restrictions and test and vaccine requirements, having a real person to answer your questions has never been more necessary. A travel agent is someone you know you can trust and who can answer every question you might have about your upcoming trip.

Nothing truly replaces the ability to call someone you know has the answers and can guide you in the right direction.

3. They’re the ones who will handle any future headaches.

Travel agent working on the phone in an office

Even the most well-planned trips for the most experienced traveler has at least a few hiccups. And traveling in a post-COVID world means you might encounter ever more hiccups and headaches along the way.

However, if you have a travel agent, it’s them who will bear the brunt of these headaches – not you. Need to cancel or change a flight, a hotel reservation, or tour booking? They’re there to take care of all those nagging details! You can just sit back and wait for their lead.

4. They’re there to handle any unexpected situation.

Samantha Brown in Iceland Geothermal Pool

If the last two years taught us anything, it’s to expect the unexpected. At this rate, I wouldn’t be surprised if a future trip was canceled because aliens have finally decided to come visit Planet Earth!

The difference between traveling on your own or with the help of a travel agent is that an agent is the one who will worry about Plans A – Z. Instead of you sitting there trying to plan for the unexpected, they will. This leaves you to truly enjoy your vacation without a single worry.

5. Often, they have access to discounts regular travelers don’t.

travel agent booking tickets

Here’s a fun tidbit you might not realize. Because travel agents are often working with airlines, hotels, cruises, tour companies, and more on multiple clients over multiple years, they’re able to negotiate better deals and access better discounts than you’d be able to on your own.

Think of it as bulk buying. A store that stocks a brand can access a steep discount because they buy a ton of product to resell. Only, unlike a store, a travel agent often passes that discount on to you instead of marking up the price!

This is one of the best reasons to pay for a service you might initially think you can just do on your own. Not only will a travel agent handle all the logistics and planning you might not have time for; it might also wind up being more cost-effective than booking on your own. That’s a win-win in my book!

Travel agents have been around since we’ve been wanting to go on vacation, and they’ve shown time and time again just how important they are for the normal traveler. In an age when every country has different entry requirements and those same entry requirements are often changing month by month, why not use a travel agent and truly enjoy your trip?

Thanks for the love. We travel advisors work so hard for our clients!

Great info! I am looking at planning some golf travel trips next year domestically & internationally (Ireland etc). A travel advisor sounds like the way to go! Thanks!!

I need a travel agent. I am taking a trip to Lome, Togo in the March/April timeframe and need to take about 126lbs. of dialysis fluid with me.

There will be about 10-12 of us going so if you have a good group rate then I will pass it along to my people. However, my main concern is being able to bring my dialysis fluid with me on the trip.

I’ve recently had a travel experience when it would have been nice to have someone else worrying about the details. I am retired and love travel planning. I put in the hours and hours of research to plan and book our trips.

We were near the end of a cruise in Norway and my husband came down with COVID. The cruise line was very attentive and arranged for us both to go to a hotel in our final port city for his quarantine period. We were supposed to go on to Ireland then Scotland. After my husband’s quarantine we decided to skip Ireland and go to Scotland. No big deal just one airline and hotel to deal with. Then I came down with COVID and we had to quarantine for ten more days. We decided to cancel the rest of the trip and go straight home. Now I am sick and had to cancel the rest of our travel plans and figure out the best way to get us home. Thank goodness I had a mild case and was able to manage all the changes between naps. It certainly would have been nicer to have had someone handle for me.

I live within easy driving distance to the Florida ports, but since Covid I have even transferred my short cruises to my TA, MichaelConsoli. It has given me a peace of mind that a 70+ person who loves to travel needs.

thank you so much for the article

Thanks so much Samantha Brown!!!

-signed, a AAA Senior Travel Advisor 💓

Thankyou Samantha Brown for your vote of confidence! It’s true that travel today is totally possible but it is complicated. We work hard at keeping that “complicated” to ourselves so that our clients can enjoy a stress-free journey.

Sadly, there are travel agents and there are travel agents. And one group is in it for all the wrong reasons. If you are fortunate to have a GOOD agent, you’re golden. Ask around for a referral. Too many of those “tweed suits” as mentioned in the article give the rest of us good agents a bad rep. As someone else commented, it’s nice to have a travel professional take care of all the details, pre and post travel.

Thank you Samantha for stating perfect reasons for people to use our expertise as travel agents! Most of us have a great passion for travel and we love to assist!

Thanks so much for the great article and for realizing that, even in our world, we still need the human factor when dealing with our clients’ very important (and often expensive) investment in and excitement about their vacations. Anything can look good online but it’s our job and our calling to know what really is! I call myself the “Queen of What-If” and you described that very well. After 23 years I’m busier than ever!

Big fan for years and so happy to see new Places to Love come out! It took me a LOT of hours to plan a custom itinerary for a family member going to Ireland on a heritage trip. Travel agents may not be very useful for a weekend jaunt or domestic trip, but we can do wonders for you if you’re scratching your head wondering how far your vacation budget will go or how to plan a complex round the world itinerary.

Thank you Samantha for your endorsement of Travel Agents. I have shared your article with our Facebook Group.

I am so happy to see this article and the great explanation of what many of us do. We are definitely mislabeled and misunderstood. I just recently became a TA and had to go through extensive training, but it will better me to help my clients in the future. We can definitely alleviate the headaches & worries and help save time and money. Many of our services are free of charge so why wouldn’t you want to use a travel agent.? We have been to most of the places we sell or have had personal tours of most destinations. We can make suggestions and offer our experience. I love watching Samantha Brown and always said one day I’ll be just like that traveling around the world. Well, I’m working on that dream right now and helping others see the beauty in travel. Message me if I can be of any help to any of you in the future. Five Seven Three DREAM. _Thanks Kelly B. : -)

New videos, witness accounts of Trump assassination attempt raise questions about security

Former President Trump walks into a rally.

The attempt to assassinate former President Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday raised questions about security protocols and how a gunman could open fire so close to the presumptive GOP nominee.

For several minutes, witnesses pointed toward a nondescript roof just outside the venue where Trump was speaking in Butler, Pa. Multiple people shouted at law enforcement that a man with a rifle was taking aim at Trump.

In videos shared on social media, attendees pleaded and shouted, “He’s got a gun.” The shots rang out from the would-be assassin, and in return, the Secret Service sharpshooters opened fire.

The former president clapped his hand to the side of his face and ducked, with Secret Service agents quickly surrounding him and whisking him away as blood dripped near his right ear.

The crowd reacts as former President Trump is surrounded by Secret Service agents.

The shooting, which left one spectator dead and injured Trump and two others, stunned operatives of both political parties who have seen firsthand the level of precision, care and detail the Secret Service takes in safeguarding its charges. American presidents and former presidents are among the most protected politicians in the world, with multiple layers of security — some visible to the public and others covert.

World & Nation

Trump shooting is a historic moment echoing past political violence in America

Donald J. Trump survived an apparent assassination attempt on Saturday — an attack that echoed previous shootings involving presidential candidates.

July 13, 2024

President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed by Homeland Security, the FBI, Secret Service and the attorney general’s office Sunday about the assassination attempt and the shooter — identified by authorities as Thomas Matthew Crooks , 20, from Bethel Park, Pa. — but a motive has not been revealed.

Biden said he has ordered a “thorough and swift investigation” of the shooting.

“There is no place in America for this kind of violence, or any violence,” Biden said during a news conference. “For that matter, an assassination attempt is contrary to everything we stand for as a nation.”

Biden said he has been consistent in his direction for the Secret Service to provide Trump with “every resource capability and protective measure necessary to ensure his continued safety.”

The president also directed the Secret Service to review its security measures for the Republican National Convention, and said he’s ordered an independent review of security at the Pennsylvania rally, which will be shared publicly.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) joined a growing chorus of politicians asking how the shooting could have happened.

On the “Today” show, Johnson said that Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas could not answer whether drones were being used to spot potential security threats.

“How could an individual be at that elevation that was seen by apparently bystanders on the ground? How could that not be noticed by Secret Service?” Johnson said Sunday morning. “Lots more questions than answers this morning.”

Former President Trump's ear is covered in blood after being shot at a campaign rally.

Democrat Bill Burton saw the intricate level of protection while accompanying then-Sen. Barack Obama during his 2008 campaign and then as a member of his White House administration.

“In the political world, people often ignore the humanity on the other side, but ultimately, former President Trump came within an inch of losing his life today,” Burton said after watching the story unfold live on television monitors during a layover at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. “And regardless of what these next months and years hold, I don’t think any of us want to live in a country where that is a reality for our leaders.”

At campaign rallies and official White House events, the level of security for spectators is greater than at an airport checkpoint. Items as innocuous as umbrellas are often confiscated. For reporters and others in close proximity to the president or a prominent candidate, the security is even more in-depth, with background checks and trained dogs smelling bags and equipment.

In addition to such publicly visible efforts, agents are often perched on rooftops with long guns when a protectee appears in public. Motorcades are guarded by federal, state and local law enforcement. Buildings and event sites are screened and safeguarded in advance, and intelligence about potential threats is vetted.

But attendees at Saturday’s rally say not all structures around the venue were covered by the Secret Service.

Greg Smith told the BBC that he had seen the shooter crawling on a nearby rooftop before shots rang out. Smith said he and others tried to alert police or the Secret Service to his presence.

“We’re pointing at the guy,” Smith told the BBC . “He had a rifle. We could clearly see him with a rifle.”

Trump shooting: Attendees describe chaotic scene as shots rang out at Pennsylvania rally

Attendees of a Pennsylvania rally for former President Trump describe when shots erupted and he was rushed off stage.

Smith suspects that law enforcement could not see the man because of the slope of the roof where he was positioned. Other eyewitness photos shared on social media show the suspect lying on his stomach with a rifle. A video shared on the social media platform X showed a chaotic scene of people shouting, “He’s got a gun!”

Trump continued to speak onstage as the scene unfolded, according to witnesses.

Smith said, “I’m thinking to myself, ‘Why is Trump still speaking? Why have they not pulled him off the stage?’ ”

Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi on Sunday addressed criticism over a lapse in security in a statement posted to X . Guglielmi said it was not true that Trump’s camp had “requested additional security resources & that those were rebuffed.”

“In fact, we added protective resources & technology & capabilities as part of the increased campaign travel tempo,” Guglielmi said.

A law enforcement source said the rooftop was beyond the security net set up by the Secret Service, adding that is now part of the investigation.

Police snipers return fire after shots were fired.

The range from which the weapon was fired and the clothing worn by the gunman led to early speculation that the shooter had military experience. However, all the branches of the military searched their records Sunday and said they had no records of Crooks serving.

“We’ve confirmed with each of the military service branches that there is no military service affiliation for the suspect with that name or date of birth in any branch,” Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, the Pentagon press secretary, said Sunday.

Crooks fired from about 430 feet from the stage where Trump was speaking. Given some training and practice, it would not be a difficult shot to make with an AR-style rifle — which was what Crooks used — said retired Los Angeles Police Department special weapons team officer and sniper Steve Gordon.

“That type of rifle is standard issue to the police/military, and that is not a difficult shot to make with that weapon system,” Gordon said.

Even without seeing the Pennsylvania venue, Gordon said that “it’s nearly impossible, if not completely impossible, to cover every window, rooftop, tree, bush and person.”

“Had they spotted him seconds earlier, they could have shot him immediately based on the circumstances,” he said. “But based on what I’ve seen so far, I believe the counter-sniper team did a tremendous job.”

He questioned whether the Secret Service had all the resources needed for the security detail.

Guglielmi told the Washington Post that the agency relied on local police at the rally. Those officers performed vital tasks usually carried out by specialized agents, including the heavily armed counter-assault team who provided cover to Trump as he was escorted out of the venue and counter-sniper teams who spotted and killed the shooter.

FBI identifies gunman in Trump assassination attempt

Trump is whisked off stage after incident at Pennsylvania rally; he is ‘fine,’ statement says.

The assassination attempt took place on the eve of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, which starts Monday, with Trump expected to accept his party’s nomination on Thursday.

Security during such events is extraordinarily tight and is certain to grow stricter after what occurred Saturday.

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers, a Democrat, said he and his staff are communicating with the agencies coordinating security for the event.

“We cannot be a country that accepts political violence of any kind — that is not who we are as Americans,” Evers said on X.

The last publicly known assassination attempt of a president or former president occurred in 1981 when Ronald Reagan was shot and seriously injured as he left a hotel in Washington.

Butler County Dist. Atty. Richard A. Goldinger told CNN on Saturday that the gunman was outside the grounds where Trump was speaking.

“Quite frankly, I don’t know how he would have gotten to the location where he was,” Goldinger said. “And I think that’s something that we’re gonna have to figure out how he got there.”

Law enforcement officers gather at an emptied campaign rally site for former President Trump.

Law enforcement consultant Roy Taylor, who has decades of experience coordinating security details for political events, said securing elevated positions around a venue is key to ensuring a protectee’s safety.

Taylor, who was not involved in Trump’s security detail in Pennsylvania, said the Secret Service acted quickly once they were alerted to Crooks’ position. But he questions why the rooftop was left open in the first place.

“Everybody needs to be taken out of the building, or officers need to be put into the building,” he said. “We need to make sure it’s secured because obviously it’s easier to fire down on somebody than it is for people to fire up, because that gives you a platform of superiority.”

It’s unclear what the situation was like for the security detail on the ground, Taylor said, adding they may have been inundated with information from rally attendees, radio chatter and Trump’s nearby speech.

As a former president, Trump already has a Secret Service detail, but that will probably increase when he accepts the nomination to be the Republican candidate, Taylor said.

Taylor was involved in coordinating the security detail for the 2020 Republican National Convention in Charlotte, N.C. For a year leading up to the convention, security met regularly to coordinate all aspects of the event.

But a security detail on the campaign trail does not have that luxury, he said, noting they are working on a quicker timeline and coordinating with local law enforcement.

“It would be difficult for them to do a full security assessment and cover every single base with the resources they’re given,” Taylor said.

FBI says it has not determined a motive for assassination attempt on former President Trump

On his social media site Sunday, former President Trump said ‘it was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening.’

July 14, 2024

Multiple politicians have called for scrutiny of the Secret Service in the wake of the shooting. Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), who chairs the House Oversight Committee, invited Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to testify at a hearing on July 22.

“The tremendous bravery of the individual United States Secret Service agents who protected President Trump, eliminated the gunman, and possibly averted more loss of life cannot be overstated enough,” Comer said in his invitation letter. In a post to X , Comer wrote, “Americans demand answers about the assassination attempt of President Trump.”

An armed officer stands guard while Secret Service agents surround former President Trump.

An advisor to 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney said the danger grows exponentially at outdoor events, which he described as “the most difficult.”

“So many ways to get a weapon in. Could have been tossed over a fence. Dug into the ground and placed earlier. Who knows?” said the advisor, asking not to be identified to speak candidly about the situation.

Burton said that while the Secret Service offers “the best protection in the world … any security official would tell you that it is nearly impossible to stop a committed lone wolf who is willing to die for his cause.”

Obama received Secret Service protection earlier than any presidential candidate in history because of the level of threats against him.

“I was absolutely shocked and immediately saddened,” Burton said of Saturday’s violence.

The Secret Service was charged with protecting presidents in 1902 after the assassination of President McKinley the previous year. Its duties — safeguarding the nation’s leaders and their families — have grown over the years, most significantly after the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963.
