EA Sports PGA Tour Review - Hit The Links

  • First Released Apr 4, 2023 released

EA returns to the world of golf with a challenging and rewarding title that's let down by a couple of inconsistencies and an underwhelming swing mechanic.

By Richard Wakeling on April 12, 2023 at 10:55AM PDT

EA Sports PGA Tour is unlike any other golf game I've played. It still features familiar elements from the series' past--back when Tiger Woods was front and center--such as slow-motion heartbeat moments and climactic power shots. But after an eight-year hiatus from the world of golf simulation, EA has returned to the fairway with a more demanding recreation of the sport that's as much about feel as it is mastering the game's robust mechanics. With 30 courses covering all four majors--including The Masters at Augusta National--EA Sports PGA Tour has a plethora of golfing action to sink your teeth into. It's just a shame there are a few notable issues in critical areas that hold it back from greatness.

The first of these is the game's swing mechanic. If you've played a golf game before, the actual act of swinging a driver or 5-iron will be familiar. You pull down on the analog stick to bring the club back, then push forward again to unleash your shot. This has been a staple in golf games for a number of years now, and there aren't any alternatives at the moment--not until a three-click system is implemented in a later update. The issue with EA Sports PGA Tour is that there's a slight delay between your input and the on-screen visual. Your swing isn't 1:1, so there's an uneasy disconnect where you never quite feel like you're in total control. The general malaise of each swing doesn't help matters either, with the slow, clunky pacing and frustrating lag making it difficult to nail the timing and power of each shot. I eventually grew accustomed to these idiosyncrasies over time, but it never feels quite right and fails to capture the satisfaction that hitting a 300-yard tee shot should achieve.

To compound the issue, EA Sports PGA Tour also lacks any sort of meaningful tutorial. There are tooltips that pop up and cover the basics the first time you play, but these brief snippets barely scratch the surface of everything going on under the hood. Instead, the game has a suite of challenges that happen to include a Coaching Academy. This is the best place to start, even if these challenges still neglect to offer any tips or feedback to help you along the way. What you get is a variety of contextual situations covering different aspects of the sport, from putting downhill to dealing with elevation changes and the multitude of shot types on offer. There's a lot of trial and error involved, but the repetition of replaying each situation does give you a greater understanding of how everything works. It's not a very user-friendly approach, but it sets expectations and is genuinely helpful in an unconventional way, even if it might prove frustrating for some. Plus, completing these challenges also earns you XP that can be used to improve your created character.

EA Sports PGA Tour

EA Sports PGA Tour's career mode sits front and center, starting off with your no-name golfer competing in the qualifying school before moving on to the amateur Korn Ferry Tour. The ultimate goal is to reach the PGA Tour, which can be done either by winning one of the many four-round courses or by placing highly enough in the Korn Ferry rankings come season's end. You can expedite this process by opting for a quick play mode where you only need to play a few holes rather than an entire round, but I think playing full rounds is the way to go. That's mostly because it gives you ample time to fine-tune your skills, learn the courses, and gain a better understanding of the game's mechanics. There's also a palpable sense of progression that comes from leveling up your golfer. Earning XP lets you build your skills in driving, approach play, short game, and putting, while progressing each attribute also unlocks more shot types, giving you additional options when preparing to send the ball careening toward the green.

Fortunately, the Coaching Academy includes challenges for each of the game's myriad shot types, giving you the opportunity to see how each one functions before playing competitively. There's value in understanding the differences between a runner, spinner, or knock-down shot, but knowing when to utilize each one essentially comes down to a matter of feel. In this respect, EA Sports PGA Tour resembles the sport of golf more accurately than any other game. There are a number of variables at play for every single shot, to the point where there's a real thought process behind each swing. You have to choose the right shot type and club for each situation, adjust for wind and elevation, judge how much power you need to put into the swing, and account for the distinct ways each course plays--tweaking your shot shape depending on the shape of the fairway and lie of the bunkers. The game helps to some degree by displaying relevant information such as wind speed and distance, but then you're left to your own devices. This can be frustrating, particularly early on when you're still learning the ropes and your golfer's attributes aren't up to snuff, but once everything clicks, EA Sports PGA Tour plays an engrossing game of golf that can be incredibly rewarding.

Much of this is down to the courses themselves. Every single one of the 30 officially licensed courses is staggeringly beautiful and offers an authentic attention to detail, whether it's Liberty National and its view of the Manhattan skyline, the waves crashing against the sand at Pebble Beach, or the alligators lurking in the water at TPC Sawgrass. Almost every course is iconic on some level, and they've all been faithfully rendered and recreated, right down to individual blades of grass. The absence of a course designer is a tad disappointing, but unlike PGA Tour 2K23, it's not something that feels like a necessity because there are already so many 18-hole delights. The courses are the game's main character, providing the kind of variety and depth to stave off any tedium. Mastering a golf game's mechanics is usually the key to success, but EA Sports PGA Tour's courses demand much more from you. Each one plays differently, whether it's the roll of the green or the width of the fairway impacting your decision-making. It genuinely feels like you're playing against the course rather than the shot meter.

EA Sports PGA Tour

The physics model, which is built around the official TrackMan data for ball tracking and swing analysis, is excellent for the most part. However, there are some inconsistencies when it comes to ball rollout. On The Old Course at St Andrews, for instance, the rollout is overly extreme to the point where the ball will roll uphill at pace, even through heavy rough. This forces you to account for situations that shouldn't really occur. Once you land on the green, putting is also equally aggravating for different reasons. Each green contains a grid that uses moving beads to show you the direction of the break. The problem is that sometimes this data is inaccurate and the break is opposite to what the beads are showing. The putt reader alleviates this somewhat by showing the ideal path to the hole, but this is also misleading at times. With no reliable way to gauge the breaks, putting is a lesson in irritation that will only be rectified if these issues are fixed in future updates.

Outside of career mode, EA Sports PGA Tour also features various tournament options for use in online matches against the community. If you want to play against friends, however, stroke play is the only option, and there's a disappointing lack of alternating play for those who want to see each other tee off. A range of daily, weekly, and seasonal tournaments give you another chance to earn XP and items like club specs and in-game cash for a limited time before they're refreshed, so there's an incentive to keep coming back. That in-game cash can be spent in a store of rotating items including various cosmetics, which holds some appeal because the character creator is extremely barebones. Outfitting your golfer in branded clothing can be fairly costly, though, which is explained by the inclusion of microtransactions for those who would rather buy the in-game currency with real money. This isn't a surprising move, but it doesn't exactly vibe with the serene mood.

After almost a decade away from the sport, EA's return to the golf course is a promising one. The range of shot types, courses, and tangible variables make for a methodical and tactical game of golf that's both challenging and rewarding. It stumbles by barely introducing players to its robust mechanics, while a laggy swing and inconsistent putting are notable flaws on what is otherwise a fantastic golf sim. EA Sports PGA Tour represents a solid re-entry for the series and lays down a sturdy foundation for an auspicious future.

  • Leave Blank
  • Each shot must be carefully considered, taking into account a number of variables
  • All 30 courses are wonderfully recreated and each one feels distinct
  • Offers a tough but satisfying simulation of golf that's close to the real thing
  • The lack of tutorials makes for a rocky start
  • Swing mechanics are delayed and create a disconnect
  • Putting information is frequently misleading

Augusta National returns to video games in new EA Sports PGA Tour series

One of the game’s most fabled courses is back in the virtual world for the first time in a decade.

And it looks better than ever.

EA Sports, the makers of the popular Tiger Woods PGA Tour and Rory McIlroy video game series which was last released in 2015, announced Thursday it is relaunching the iconic video game as EA Sports PGA Tour — and with it comes the return of Augusta National to video games as part of EA Sports PGA Tour’s roster of 30 courses.

The game also includes a “Road to the Masters” career mode. EA Sports PGA Tour will be the only golf video game to feature the four men’s major championships, as well as the LPGA’s Amundi Evian Championship. Augusta National and EA Sports announced the renewed partnership before the 2021 Masters.

Tiger Woods or the Masters? Two new golf video games present consumers a choice

GOLF.com attended a media preview of the game last week, where developers said the time was right for the company to bring back the series because of the large boom of interest in golf thanks to the pandemic. Advancements to the game’s Frostbite graphics engine also allowed creators to, in their words, make “the most spectacular-looking golf game ever.” (EA Sports also has plans to revive its extremely popular college football game in the summer of 2024.)

The team focused on four pillars when creating the game:

1. The exclusive home of the majors

The covers of EA Sports PGA Tour standard (L) and deluxe editions.

EA developers said this was by far the most requested feature for a golf video game. Augusta National debuted in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 (2011) and was a staple for the remaining two editions of the game. It was not featured in the 2015 reboot, Rory McIlroy PGA Tour.

There will be unique presentation packages for each major, including an intro for the Open Championship narrated by Nick Faldo.

EA Sports’ agreements with golf’s governing bodies go further than just the majors. For the first time, the U.S. Amateur, Augusta National Women’s Amateur and other top amateur events will be featured in the game.

2. Deep and varied course roster

The game will launch with 30 courses worldwide, ranging from classic video game favorites like TPC Sawgrass and Pebble Beach to more exotic spots like Oregon’s Bandon Dunes or New Zealand’s Tara Iti .

Producer Ban Ramsour said the team went as far as to work with former geologists to map each course using LiDAR, photogrammetry (the science of extracting 3D information from photos) and GPS mapping technology. On ground mapping and photography were conducted at every course, including the use of helicopters, airplanes and drones.

A screenshot of Augusta National's 13th green from the EA Sports PGA Tour video game.

Augusta National even gave EA access to its “tree health software” so developers could accurately place every tree and flower on the course.

Ramsour said the data used for the courses was 30 times more dense than anything publically available for other games and simulators.

During the preview, the developers played a live demo of the game on Augusta National’s 13th hole to showcase the new gameplay mechanics (more on that below) and course details.

Notably, the pair teed off from last year’s back tee. Recent aerial photographs of Augusta National have shown a new tee on the famous par-5 . While Augusta National likely won’t make any announcement about the tee until closer to the tournament, when asked about the new tee EA Sports lead producer David Baker said that there could be updates down the line.

“The game team is working with Augusta National and is continually looking to get the most up-to-date course playable in-game for the most authentic experience possible,” Baker told GOLF.com in an email. “That includes bunkers, fairways and tee boxes from all courses in the game, for example. The strong partnerships we have forged with each course has allowed us to replicate each course as accurately as possible.”

Danielle Kang hits an approach on No. 6 at Pebble Beach in a screenshot from EA Sports PGA Tour.

Here’s the full roster of courses included for the game’s launch:

-Augusta National -St. Andrews (Old Course) -Pebble Beach -The Country Club -Southern Hills -TPC Sawgrass -Evian Resort -East Lake -Wilmington Country Club -TPC Boston -TPC Southwind -Teeth of the Dog -TPC Scottsdale -Tara Iti -Whistling Straits -The Ocean Course at Kiawah -Chambers Bay -Wolf Creek -Liberty National -Bay Hill -Riviera Country Club -PGA West -Quail Hollow -Torrey Pines -Banff Springs -Top of the Rock -Bandon Dunes -Harbour Town

3. Pure Strike gameplay powered by ShotLink

For the first time in a video game, ShotLink and Trackman data is being used to accurately recreate ball behavior across a wide variety of different courses. Instead of choosing between simple full shots, punches, chips, etc., the game introduces 20 different shot types.

“What this means for you is that when you grab the controller and step behind the ball, your options are virtually unlimited,” said Gameplay designer Craig Penner. “Allowing you to attack each course and each hole just like the pros you see on TV.”

To better replicate ball bounces and roll, the EA team actually reviewed video of PGA Tour events. They then took the ShotLink data to create accurate launch conditions, carry distances and spin rates.

4. Career mode

Tony Finau plays a shot at Pebble Beach in a screen shot from EA Sports PGA Tour.

The Create a Player mode is back, but now you’ll have three options for where to start your career: Playing in amateur events, the Korn Ferry Tour or on the PGA Tour.

In addition to the majors, the game has licensed several PGA Tour events and the three FedEx Cup Playoff events.

To tell the story of your career, the game features hundreds of hours of commentary from Rich Lerner, Frank Nobilo, Notah Begay III, Iona Stephen and Nick Faldo.

There will also be challenges in between tournaments based on real-world events.

In addition to playing as your created player, numerous top pros are included in the game. Some of the announced players are Scottie Scheffler, Nelly Korda, Tony Finau, Jordan Spieth, Danielle Kang, Patrick Cantlay and Lexi Thompson. EA said more will be announced later, and some will be released post-launch.

Pre-orders for the game, which is available only on Playstation 5, Xbox Series X | S and PC, start Thursday while the launch date is set for March 24. The standard edition will go for $69.99, while the Digital Deluxe Edition is $84.99.

Dave Portnoy fumes at 18th hole protestors before landing yet another huge Scottie Scheffler gamble

pga tour 2015 video game

The founder of Barstool Sports, Dave Portnoy, has recently taken up golf betting, riding with Scottie Scheffler at extremely short odds on what seems like a weekly basis.

On Sunday, Scheffler was once again in the lead during the final round of the Travelers Championship when protestors stormed the 18th green prior to Scottie and his playing partner Tom Kim, attempting their putts.

The protestors were tackled and taken out in handcuffs by police.

Despite the protestors slowing things down, Portnoy still got his desired outcome. Scheffler was able to defeat Tom Kim in the first playoff hole after the South Korean missed the green and was faced with a fried egg in the bunker. Scottie made par and Tom made bogey, resulting in Portnoy’s $180k wager coming in.

The win was the sixth for Scheffler in his last ten starts.

The amusing reason why Scottie Scheffler refused to sign autograph for spectator at Travelers Championship

pga tour 2015 video game

Earlier this week, the Boston Celtics won the 2024 NBA Championship, defeating the Dallas Mavericks in five games.

Scottie Scheffler, who’s a Mavericks fan, arrived at the Travelers Championship this week, which of course will have plenty of Celtics fan being in New England region.

According to Scottie, a fan at the course asked him to sign his Celtics hat and the two-time major champion refused to do so.

“One fan asked me to sign a @Celtics hat today, I told him no.” ? Dallas native Scottie Scheffler receiving some tough reminders in New England after the @DallasMavs loss in the @NBA Finals. pic.twitter.com/4xpKdfcb0p — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) June 19, 2024

Last year, Celtics fan Keegan Bradley won at TPC River Highlands, so Scheffler is out for revenge after a lackluster performance at last week’s U.S. Open.

EA Sports announced Monday it is developing a PGA Tour-licensed golf video game for consoles, giving 2K Sports a direct competitor to its PGA Tour 2K series. A launch date will be announced “in the coming months,” EA said.

EA Sports PGA Tour will include the Tour’s branding, plus The Players Championship, the FedExCup Playoffs, and Pebble Beach Golf Links, according to a news release from Electronic Arts. EA this year signed a “new, long-term deal” with the PGA Tour, the statement said. The publisher did not specify platforms in the news release, but described the product as a “next-gen golf video game.”

“We’ve partnered with EA Sports to bring immersive golf video game experiences to fans of all ages for years,” said Len Brown, the PGA Tour’s licensing executive. “We are thrilled to continue working with EA Sports on its golf franchise to authentically represent the PGA Tour for the next generation.”

⛳️We’re back in the game... Follow the official @EASPORTSPGATOUR account for more info pic.twitter.com/nfIX1ch7eY — EA SPORTS (@EASPORTS) March 29, 2021

Electronic Arts’ announcement comes two weeks after 2K announced it had bought HB Studios , the formerly independent developer of The Golf Club and PGA Tour 2K series, and signed an exclusive deal with Tiger Woods to appear in the series beginning with its next edition. Woods and EA Sports had partnered on the Tiger Woods PGA Tour series, for consoles and PC, from 1998 to 2013 .

EA’s last golf video game was 2015’s Rory McIlroy PGA Tour for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. EA Sports PGA Tour will be developed by the company’s EA Tiburon studio in Maitland, Florida, which also made Rory McIlroy PGA Tour and the Tiger Woods PGA Tour series before it.

2K began publishing golf titles in 2018 with The Golf Club 2019 , which also featured PGA Tour licensing, The Players Championship (with six TPC course), and the FedExCup playoffs. The series returned in 2020 as PGA Tour 2K21 , with 10 TPC courses and five additional real-life courses.

EA said Monday that EA Sports PGA Tour will be built in the company’s Frostbite engine, as Rory McIlroy PGA Tour was six years ago. “We can’t wait to give fans the opportunity to compete on some of the most iconic PGA tour courses, and win the FedEx Cup,” Cam Weber, EA Sports’ general manager, said in a statement.

The resumption of a golf series is another surprise expansion of EA Sports’ portfolio, following a console generation in which the label regularly published just four series. At the beginning of February, EA Sports announced it was returning to college football with a licensed video game for consoles , sometime in 2022 or afterward.

It also follows Electronic Arts’ December acquisition of motorsports specialist Codemasters, with a last-minute, $1.2 billion bid that overrode 2K parent Take-Two Interactive’s initial $994 million deal to buy out the studio.

Golf or clubbing

Game offers some great game play and graphics to boot. However it becomes stale will little to unlock and do not like the old EA Tiger Woods games worth getting to play though keeps you entertained

Best golf game on PS4...

Best golf game on PS4 but it still isn't better overall than all the different seasons of Tiger woods golf on PS3, but I will say they did a good job getting close. Graphics, gameplay & presentation are the major upsides but the online play is what this game lacks compared to Tiger... But if u can get this game cheap go for it if you use to play Tiger on PS3.

Great game for ps4 but not Tiger good

Same basic gameplay of all the Tiger games. Just not nearly as in depth with all the extras. Apparel and equipment are lacking, no Masters. But even in 2021 this is still the best ps4 golf game available. Hopefully EA releases a new one soon. Enjoy

Paris 2024 Olympics

Jordan howard | ncaa.com | june 24, 2024, remembering the college careers of the usa men's golf roster at the 2024 olympics.

pga tour 2015 video game

The 2024 Olympic Games starting Friday, July 26 through Sunday, Aug. 11, will once again feature golf — for just the fifth time in Olympic history. Golf was first introduced to the games in 1900, but the sport took over a century-long hiatus after the 1904 St. Louis Olympic Games. In 2016, golf triumphantly returned to the world's biggest stage, and the sport now enters its third-straight Olympics.

There are 60 men's golfers in the Olympic field, and the United States is the only country featuring four golfers — Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Wyndham Clark and Collin Morikawa. Every country receives a maximum of two representatives, but there is one exception. If a country has more than two golfers in the Official World Golf Rankings top 15, the country is allowed to send a maximum of four. The United States was the only country to meet this exception for the 2024 Olympic Games.

The four US representatives will compete at Le Golf National, most commonly known for hosting the 2018 Ryder Cup. Olympic golf competition is held similarly to any PGA Tour event, as an individual stroke play tournament consisting of 72 holes played over four days. Schauffele will look to defend his title after capturing the gold medal for the US in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Let's look back at the college careers of the four US men's golfers:

*All rankings as of June 17, 2024

Scottie Scheffler, Texas

Scottie Scheffler Texas Golf

The 28-year-old phenom has taken the golf world by storm in recent years, winning two of the past three Masters Tournaments and 11 PGA Tour events. The former Longhorn has been the OWGR number one since May of 2023, and he will certainly be the favorite to take home the gold in the Paris Games.

But before dominating the PGA Tour, Scheffler honed his game in Austin from 2014-2018. As a freshman, the Dallas, Texas native fired 21 rounds under par, the best on his team, and won two tournaments-- the Western Intercollegiate and the 2015 Big 12 Championship.

Scheffler's two wins freshman year would be the most in one season during his time at Texas. Scheffler went through a sophomore slump, with his highest finish at ninth in the 2016 Big 12 Championship, but he bounced back in his junior season. In the 2016-2017 season, Scheffler recorded six top-three finishes, including a win at the East Lake Cup. His junior season would mark his best finish in the NCAA Tournament, ending tied for third in the championship round.

The world number one would once again go winless in his senior season, but he fired 22 of his 34 rounds under par, giving golf fans a glimpse of his incredible consistency to come.

Xander Schauffele, San Diego State

Xander Schauffele SDSU golf

The reigning Olympic golf gold medalist has been a staple on the PGA Tour since his debut in 2016 when he became the first PGA Tour rookie to win the Tour Championship. He most recently captured his first major championship, winning the 2024 PGA Championship in dramatic fashion, and he currently sits third in the OWGR.

Schauffele began his collegiate golf career at Long Beach State before transferring to San Diego State entering his sophomore season. During his sophomore campaign, Schauffele posted a 72.13 scoring average, which ranked second on the Aztecs and sixth in the Mountain West.

The 2016-2017 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year made a jump into his junior season, averaging 71.61 strokes per round, and recording his first win at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic. He finished the 2013-2014 season with five top-five finishes and a team-leading 16 rounds below par.

In his final season as an Aztec, Schauffele once again made a jump, with a scoring average of 70.49 and eight top-five performances. He earned his second collegiate win at the Barona Collegiate Cup, where he fired a 17-under par 199 in the 54-hole event. He closed out his collegiate career with third-team All-America honors.

Wyndham Clark, Oregon

Wyndham Clark Oregon golf

Clark is one of golf's newest stars, bursting onto the scene in 2023 by winning the Wells Fargo Championship followed by the 2023 US Open. He ended 2022 ranked 163 in the OWGR, and he currently sits at fifth about halfway through the 2024 season.

The 30-year-old spent four years at Oklahoma State before transferring to Oregon for his redshirt senior season. As a redshirt freshman, Clark was named Big 12 Player of the Year, and put together a streak of seven straight finishes inside the top six. Clark slumped slightly in his sophomore season, but still made the NCAA Championship for the second consecutive year.

The Oregon graduate made a jump into his junior season, placing top-five seven times and tied for second four times. However, he failed to qualify for the NCAA Tournament in the 2015-2016 season. The following summer, Clark took his talents to Eugene, where he shined in his final collegiate season. Clark was ranked number one on Golfstat (college golf rankings), and he was named a 2017 Ben Hogan Award Finalist.

He closed out his collegiate career by winning the Pac-12 Championship and finishing second at the NCAA Baton Rouge Invitational.

Collin Morikawa, California

Collin Morikawa Cal golf

The youngest of the golfers on the list at 27, Morikawa is a two-time Major champion and sits seventh on the OWGR. The 2020 PGA Championship winner has six career wins on the PGA Tour, and is widely considered one of the best ball strikers in the game today.

Out of the four remarkable golfers on this list, Morikawa arguably has the most impressive resume in college. He earned three first-team All-America honors for the Golden Bears-- the first Cal golfer to do so-- and holds Cal's all-time scoring average record.

The 2021 Open Championship winner made the NCAA Championships twice (2016 and 2019), finishing top-10 both times. During his junior season, Morikawa set the all-time NCAA single-season stroke average record at 68.68. Over his career at Cal, he won five events, had 22 top-five finishes and 35 top tens. He was seemingly always in contention, and he has carried this consistency onto the PGA Tour.

Morikawa, along with Schauffele, is making his second appearance in the Olympics, and he will look to find his way on the podium after finishing fourth in the Tokyo Games.

Amy Yang holds steady to win KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Sahalee

SAMMAMISH — While those around her started flailing, South Korean Amy Yang stayed as steady as she had been all week until the final three holes Sunday at Sahalee Country Club.

Because of that, Yang extended a two-shot lead entering the final round into a seven-shot lead through her first 15 holes. It was a big enough lead to let her withstand some late missteps and win the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship by three shots over Lilia Vu, Miya Yamashita and Jin Young Ko for her first major title.

Yang closed with an even-par 72 and finished at 7-under 281.

Yang birdied the eighth hole, the hardest hole all week, while playing partners Yamashita from Japan and American Lauren Hartlage made a double bogey on the hole, pushing Yang’s lead from two shots to five.

That Yang would finally win her first major after being in contention so many times before was never really in doubt after that.

“At one point, I thought will I ever win a major championship before I retire, and I finally did it and it’s just amazing,” said Yang, 34, who won her sixth LPGA Tour event.

Yang’s lead grew to seven shots before she missed a 3-foot par putt on the 16th hole, then made a double bogey on the par-3 17th hole after hitting her tee shot into the water.

Related 2024 women’s pga championship at sahalee

That cut the lead to three shots heading to the final hole. After putting her drive in the fairway, Yang hit her second shot into the rough. But when she hit her third shot on the green, it was all but over and she two-putted for a closing par.

Moments after the putt dropped, some of Yang’s friends on the LPGA Tour doused her with Champagne.

It was well earned.

Yang, who earned $1.56 million with the win, said it was “the longest 18 holes I ever played in my career,” but said she was boosted by the crowd that she called the best of her career.

“I was that much stressed and felt pressure out there. But I think I managed to stay well and stay positive,” said Yang, who qualified to represent South Korea in the Olympics next month. “Golf is really just like a fight against myself. (But) I think I proved to myself that I can compete and I can do this, so (this) was a good learning week.”

On a course that beat up almost everyone in the field — at least at times — Yang made just five bogeys and nothing worse than that through 69 holes. That gave her more than enough cushion to withstand the late hiccups.

Yang entered the week with 21 top-10 finishes in the LPGA’s five major tournaments without a victory in one.

Twice, she has finished second alone at the U.S. Women’s Open (2012 and 2015), part of seven top-10 finishes in that event.

Yang, who finished seventh when this event was played at Sahalee in 2016, started the day with a two-shot lead over Hartlage and Yamashita.

Hartlage had never finished better than 51 st in a major, at the 2022 U.S. Open, and her best finish in an LPGA Tour event was a tie for sixth.

But despite the inexperience in pressure situations like the one she was in Sunday, she started off fast and was 2 under through five holes when she missed a 5-foot birdie putt on the par-5 sixth hole that would have moved her into a tie for the lead with Yang.

Hartlage followed that with a double bogey on the seventh to fall three behind.

That left Yamashita the nearest pursuer, two shots back.

But not for long. Yamashita, who has won five times on the LPGA Tour of Japan and finished 12 th last month in the U.S. Women’s Open — her best finish in a major — became one of just many through four days to suffer a double bogey on the eighth hole.

That left Yamashita five behind, and Hartlage six behind after a second straight double bogey.

From that point on, it seemed she was battling for second place.

That battle was tight. When Yamashita bogeyed the 15th hole, it dropped her into a five-way tie at 3 under, seven strokes behind Yang.

Vu, who was part of the three-way tie for second place, was not surprised that Yang kept her lead Sunday.

“I know she’s a really solid player and knows how to win,” Vu said. “Obviously, it’s working for her and she’s played so well, so congrats to her.”

It was also an excellent week for Vancouver, Wash., resident Caroline Inglis who finished tied for ninth, her best finish on the LPGA Tour, surpassing the tie for 10th she had in 2018.

But no one had a better week than Yang, who had missed the cut in her previous two events and whose top finish this year before this week had been a tie for 22nd.

Things clicked at just the right time.

“It’s amazing, and like I said before, I proved to myself that I can do this and I’ll continue to work hard and go for next one,” Yang said.
