More Coldplay

British music icons Coldplay are returning to Australia in November for two special, exclusive shows at Perth’s Optus Stadium – their first shows in the state since 2009.

“We're so happy to be returning to Perth for an extra special one-off show at Optus Stadium on November 18th this year,” Coldplay said in a statement.

“It’s a huge deal for us, and we’re massively looking forward to coming back to Western Australia. It’s been way too long.”

Since their formation in London in 1997, Coldplay have gone on to sell over 100 million albums across the globe. Their first three albums alone – 2000’s Parachutes , 2002’s A Rush Of Blood To The Head , and 2005’s X&Y , are three of the best-selling albums in the UK.

In 2008, they reached a record that was only previously held by the Spice Girls when their single Viva La Vida topped the UK Singles Chart and the Billboard 200, making them the first British outfit since Spice Girls’ Wannabe to achieve the feat.

In 2021, after being the only band to headline Glastonbury four times, Coldplay headlined the legendary Worthy Farm festival for a record-breaking fifth time. Coldplay have won nine Brit Awards, seven Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, and many more. It’s fair to say that they’re the biggest band in the world right now, and Perth gets to showcase them this November.

Read on to learn everything you need to know about Coldplay’s upcoming Australian tour dates.

DATES & VENUES

Coldplay will headline Perth’s Optus Stadium on Saturday, 18, and Sunday, 19 November.

TICKETING INFO

Coldplay’s first show at Optus Stadium on 18 November was met with extraordinary demand , leading to a second show the following night. Tickets are presently sold out, but we will update this article if last-minute tickets are released closer to the shows. Until the Ticketmaster resale opens, you can try your luck at buying tickets through the safe buying and resale avenue, Tixel .

SUPPORT ACTS

On Saturday, 18 November, Coldplay will be joined by special guests Amy Shark and Thelma Plum . The next night, it’ll be Tash Sultana and Thelma Plum.

WHAT THEY’RE PROMOTING

Coldplay are promoting their ninth album, Music Of The Spheres. Released in 2021 , the album followed 2019’s Everyday Life .

The Music called Music Of The Spheres , “an epic pop symphony,” and noted, “While not hitting the commercial highs of their previous albums, it spawned the massive hit  My Universe  with  BTS  as well as the ten-minute epic  Coloratura . One of the first new albums to take full advantage of Apple Music's spatial audio mixing, the album is a sonic feast.”

The Music Of The Spheres tour began in March 2022 at Costa Rica’s San José, so there are plenty of setlists. Here’s the most recent one from Wednesday, 19 July, at Amsterdam’s Johan Cruyff Arena per Setlist.fm :

Act .i. Planets

Music of the Spheres

Higher Power

Adventure of a Lifetime

Paradise (extended intro and outro)

The Scientist (with excerpts of “Oceans” in the intro and backward outro)

Act .ii. Moons

Viva la Vida

Hymn for the Weekend

Charlie Brown

Act .iii. Stars

Human Heart

People of the Pride

Infinity Sign (shortened; with excerpts of Music of the Spheres II & Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall)

Something Just Like This (The Chainsmokers & Coldplay) (shortened; pre-recorded vocals with Chris performing in sign language)

Aeterna (on B-Stage; pre-recorded vocals; shortened)

My Universe (Coldplay x BTS)

A Sky Full of Stars

Act .iv. Home

Biutyful (extended outro)

The Music Of The Spheres tour has been named a “fantastical, feel-good bonanza”, per NME . When they were last in Australia in December 2016, The Music caught Coldplay in Melbourne , Sydney and Brisbane .

For their show at Sydney’s Allianz Stadium, writer Deborah Jackson described the Coldplay concert as “magic” and “a night that the 45,000 people who had poured into Allianz Stadium are unlikely to forget anytime soon”. Jackson later concluded that “Martin delivered vocally perfect renditions of songs both old and new, but trying to pick a favourite moment would be like trying to pick a favourite child. It was all incredible.”

At the time of writing (25 July), here’s what we know. But, as with a lot of major events and venues, things will likely change in the lead-up. We will update with show-specific transport info when it comes to hand.

Optus Stadium is located in the Perth suburb of Burswood. According to the website , there is no dedicated parking lot on event days, so punters will need to plan accordingly. Your travel options include drop-off, public transport, walking and cycling, taxi/rideshare, and the Burswood Jetty.

ACCESSIBLE PARKING

While the stadium doesn’t offer public parking on event days, it does have a limited amount of accessible ACROD spots. You will need your event ticket, ACROD permit and a parking/drop-off pass to access the bays.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Train: You can get to Optus Stadium on the Joondalup, Fremantle and Armadale Lines. If you’re on the Midland and Airport Lines, you can walk over the Windan Bridge to East Perth Station.

Bus: Perth has a suburban event bus network and Perth CBD shuttle buses that stop at Perth Stadium Bus Station. You can find specific bus information closer to the dates.

Two paths lead directly to Optus Stadium for punters: venturing over the pedestrian Matagarup Bridge, which crosses Swan River from East Perth, and the Burswood Peninsula, which has pedestrian and cycle access to Stadium Park through multiple directions.

TAXI/RIDESHARE

Taxi: You can access the Optus Stadium primary taxi rank off Victoria Park Drive, adjacent to Eastern Train Station.

Rideshare: If you’re catching an Uber or Ola to Optus Stadium, you can be picked up and dropped off from Nelson Avenue in East Perth and walk across the Matagarup Bridge to arrive at the stadium.

BURSWOOD JETTY

You can also be dropped off directly outside the Stadium Park precinct on the Burswood Jetty, a viable option for pick up and drop off at Optus Stadium. You can book your jetty trip via Captain Cook Cruises .

WA’s Deputy Premier, the Hon. Roger Cook, said, “The Western Australian Government, through Tourism WA, is proud to support Coldplay’s return to our state after fourteen years, with their first ever concert at our award-winning Optus Stadium.

Coldplay add second show to their Australian visit this November

You know Coldplay . They were kinda indie darlings for a few minutes in the early 2000s before blowing up to become one of the biggest bands on the planet.

They've got a staggering number of massive hits and play enormous stadium shows the world over. If you're not one of the many who ditched their CD collections, you probably have one of their albums in your house somewhere.

One thing you might not know about Coldplay is that they haven't been to Western Australia in over 14 years.

Well, that's all about to change.

The UK pop-rock behemoth today announce their return to Australia. But they'll only play one show when they're here , and it's happening in Perth.

UPDATE: Coldplay have added a second date to their tour, and will play Optus Stadium on Sunday 19 November.

The band have added Perth to their Music of The Spheres World Tour, which kicked off in March of last year and has seen the band break all manner of attendance records as fans flock to their shows.

This is another huge coup for Western Australia and Tourism WA's major events strategy. Thousands of fans were convinced to head over to Perth to see Björk earlier this year , and will hope that there's a similar appetite among pop fans to see this massive stadium show.

Coldplay have sold six million tickets since kicking off this tour, selling more tickets than any other act in 2022.

Joining the band will be a couple of Queensland legends in Australian pop rock star Amy Shark and everyone's favourite singer-songwriter Thelma Plum .

This is Coldplay's first show in Perth since playing two shows at the city's Burswood Dome in February of 2009. This will be their first show at the relatively new Optus Stadium.

Catch Coldplay playing the following shows. Tickets are on sale from 10am Tuesday 16 May.

Saturday 18 November – Optus Stadium, Perth (with Amy Shark and Thelma Plum)

Sunday 19 November – Optus Stadium, Perth (with Amy Shark and Thelma Plum)

Coldplay Announce 2023 Tour Dates

By Matthew Strauss

Coldplay

Coldplay have announced 2023 dates on their world tour in support of Music of the Spheres . Next year, the band will perform in Portugal, Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, and the Netherlands. Find Coldplay’s schedule and a trailer for the tour below.

Coldplay famously declined to tour in support of Everyday Life for environmental reasons. Taylor Swift, ‘Eras’ tour shatters highest-grossing tour milestone

I t was inevitable that Taylor Swift and her “ Eras” tour was going to become the highest-grossing concert tour ever. She beat out the likes of Elton John , Coldplay, and U2 for the honor. And the tour isn’t over yet.

In a new report from the BBC, they reveal that Swift’s “Eras” tour has sold 11 million tickets. That has resulted in an estimated £1.7 billion in estimated revenue (that’s over $2.1 billion USD). These numbers come across the 152 dates that Swift has planned for the tour across 22 countries.

This makes the “Eras” tour the highest-grossing concert tour of all time. It’s on pace to gross over $2 billion when it’s all said and done. This is a stark contrast from her “Reputation” tour, which reportedly failed to sell out in the UK. BBC cites a report that said that Swift’s opening night in Manchester had 18,000 empty seats. These days, it’s nearly impossible to spot one.

To make the figures even more impressive, the “Eras” tour haul doesn’t even include merchandise sales or the theatrical box office haul of Swift’s concert film. Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour was released mid-tour in October 2023 and grossed over $260 million at the box office (the highest-grossing concert film of all time).

The “Eras” tour

On March 17, 2023, Swift kicked off her sixth concert tour. The “Eras” tour is her most ambitious tour to date — Swift takes fans on a three-hour journey through her discography throughout the 45-song set.

She spent most of 2023 playing shows across North America before making her way to Mexico, Argentina, and Brazil.

In 2024, Swift resumed the tour with shows in Japan, Australia, and Singapore before taking another break. On May 9, 2024, Swift picked up the tour with a European leg of the “Eras” tour.

This current leg of the tour will conclude with a five-night stay at Wembley Stadium in London, England. Swift will then return to North America and play shows in Florida, Louisiana, and Indiana.

To close out the “Eras” tour, Swift will go to Canada. Nine dates are planned across Toronto and Vancouver. The final shows will take place from December 6-9 in Vancouver.

Who is Taylor Swift?

Taylor Swift is one of the highest-selling artists of all time. She is decorated with accolades and awards.

Thus far in her career, Swift has received 52 Grammy Award nominations. She has won 14 awards and is coming off of a year in which she won two awards — Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for Midnights.

At the ceremony, Swift announced her eleventh album of original music, The Tortured Poets Department. This was her follow-up to Midnights and a break from her re-recorded work. An extended version of the album came out hours after the original album with 15 more tracks.

In addition to her original music, Swift has spent a lot of the last few years re-recording her past work released by Big Machine Records. She began the (Taylor’s Version) series in 2021 with a re-recorded version of Fearless. She subsequently re-recorded Red, Speak Now, and 1989.

The only albums left for Swift to re-record are Reputation and her self-titled debut album.

The band – who have always been conscious of the environmental impact of touring – shared an update on the sustainability results they have achieved so far earlier today (June 2).

The ‘ Music Of The Spheres’ tour , which began back in March 2022 and has sold over 9million tickets so far, has been revealed to have already produced 59 per cent less CO2e emissions than their previous stadium tour in 2016 and 2017. This already beats the original target that Chris Martin and co. had set to ensure they beat those of previous tours by 50 per cent.

It has also been revealed that 7million trees have been planted globally thanks to the success of the live shows. This comes as a result of the band promising to have one tree planted for every person who attends the tour.

“When we first announced the ‘Music Of The Spheres Tour’ in 2021, we pledged to reduce our direct carbon emissions (from show production, freight, band and crew travel) by at least 50 per cent,” the band wrote in a new statement. “We’re happy to report that direct CO2e emissions from the first two years of this tour are 59 per cent less than our previous stadium tour (2016-17), on a show-by-show comparison. These figures have been verified by the MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative.

“We’d like to say a huge thank you to our incredible touring family and to all the brilliant people who’ve made this possible. Most of all, we’d like to thank everyone who’s come to a show and helped charge the show batteries on the power bikes and kinetic dance floors; everyone who’s arrived by foot, bike, ride share or public transport; everyone who’s come with refillable water bottles or returned their LED wristband for recycling; and everyone who’s bought a ticket, which means you’ve already planted one of 7 million trees so far,” they added.

“As a band, and as an industry, we’re a long way from where we need to be on this. But we’re grateful for everyone’s help so far, and we salute everyone who’s making efforts to push things in the right direction.”

Other new findings shared in the report include confirmation of an 86 per cent average return rate of the reusable, plant-based LED wristbands used at shows, 72 per cent of all tour waste diverted from landfill and sent for reuse, recycling and composting, and two solar-powered Ocean Cleanup River Interceptors deployed.

Additionally, it has been shown that 18 shows were powered entirely using the tourable battery system in 2023 made from recycled BMW i3 batteries, 23 partnerships were secured with green travel providers to help fans travel to shows via super-low carbon transport, and there was an average of 17kWh power per show generated via in-venue solar installations, kinetic dance floors and power bikes – enough to power the band’s C-stage performance each night.

The statistics have also been validated by Professor John E. Fernandez of MIT’s (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Environmental Solutions Initiative, who praised the band for “again setting a new standard for the entire music industry.”

“For some time now, Coldplay has been leading by example in taking seriously and acting on the various interrelated environmental and social challenges facing humanity; climate change, biodiversity loss, air and water pollution, environmental injustice and more,” Fernandez added.

“With each subsequent year of their tour, they demonstrate an evolving vision and expanded commitment to move the entire music industry toward true and humane sustainability and planetary resilience. From collecting unprecedented amounts of data to taking specific actions today based on rigorous analysis, Coldplay is modelling a trajectory toward a low carbon, biodiverse and equitable future.”

Chris Martin of Coldplay performs at Optus Stadium on November 18, 2023 in Perth, Australia.

Coldplay’s ‘Music Of The Spheres World Tour’ continues in Athens, Greece next week and will also see the band headline at Glastonbury for the fifth time .

Their set at Worthy Farm this month will see them become the first act to top the Glastonbury bill five times, following headline performances in 2002, 2005, 2011 and 2016.

It’ll also come following them sharing details of a 25th anniversary vinyl edition of ‘Brothers & Sisters’ and making headlines with their headline show at the BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend  last month.

As for the future of the group, Martin has previously stated that he has plans to stop writing music as a band by 2025 .

“Well I know I can tell you: our last proper record will come out in 2025 and after that I think we will only tour,” Martin said during an interview with Jo Wiley. “Maybe we’ll do some collaborative things but the Coldplay catalogue, as it were, finishes then.”

NME spoke with Coldplay back in 2021 and Martin revealed a similar sentiment to us: “We’re going to make 12 albums. Because it’s a lot to pour everything into making them. I love it and it’s amazing, but it’s very intense too.”

“I feel like because I know that challenge is finite, making this music doesn’t feel difficult, it feels like, ‘This is what we’re supposed to be doing’.”

Back in 2022, the ‘Music Of The Spheres’ tour was given a glowing five-star review by NME , and described as delivering “a fantastical, feel-good bonanza that delivers on a bold promise”.
