Ohio State Announces Changes to 2025-26 Schedule

  • Ohio State Buckeyes

The Ohio State Buckeyes have made a change to their 2025-26 non-conference schedule.

The Buckeyes will no longer host the Uconn Huskies on October 18, 2025, according to an announcement from the school's athletic department on Monday. This adjustment came after both Ohio State and UConn agreed to cancel their contest with one another.

Instead of the Huskies, Ohio State will host the Grambling State Tigers at Ohio Stadium on September 6, 2025. This upcoming date with the Tigers will be the Buckeyes' second-ever time playing against a Historically Black College or University (HBCU).

Kaleb Jackson runs the ball as the LSU Tigers take on Grambling State at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023.

In 2013, Ohio State trounced the Florida A&M Rattlers (another HBCU) 76-0 at Ohio Stadium.

Ohio State's battle with Grambling State will be its fifth-ever meeting against a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) school. The most-recent occurrence was just last season, when the Scarlet and Gray dominated the Youngstown State Penguins, 35-7.

Here is an updated look at Ohio State's non-conference schedule for the next four years:

August 30 vs. Texas Longhorns

September 6 vs. Grambling State Tigers

September 13 vs. Ohio Bobcats

September 5 vs. Ball State Cardinals

September 12 at Texas Longhorns

September 19 vs. Kent State Golden Flashes

September 4 vs. Bowling Green State Falcons

September 11 vs. New Hampshire Wildcats

September 18 vs. Alabama Crimson Tide

September 2 vs. Buffalo Bulls

September 9 at Alabama Crimson Tide

September 16 vs. Northern Illinois Huskies

In the same announcement, Ohio State said the nine Big Ten games that will make up the rest of the 2025-26 schedule will be released later this fall.

Ohio State football makes intriguing change on 2024 schedule

Ohio State football's 2024 schedule just underwent a small tweak revolving non-conference opponents

Brian Buyawe

Ohio State football, Ryan Day

Ahead of Ohio State football 's upcoming season, a slight tweak has just been made to the team's schedule. The Buckeyes will be facing Grambling State in place of UConn, marking a change in non-conference opponents. The game against Grambling State will be on September 6 while the UConn clash on October 18 has been canceled after mutual agreement from both schools. (per ohiostatebuckeyes.com)

Ohio State's schedule won't be easy. Besides their season-ending clash against Michigan, the team will be up against the likes of Oregon and Penn State. Nevertheless, the Buckeyes themselves are a squad to be feared. Finishing 2023 with the second-best record in the Big Ten, Ohio State won their first 11 games before falling in the November 25 rivalry game against the Wolverines.

As a result, the Buckeyes missed out on a CFP appearance, settling for a Cotton Bowl Classic against Missouri to conclude their campaign. They're currently gearing up for another run, in what will be Ryan Day's seventh season as a head coach.

The last time Ohio State won a National Championship was in 2014, during the Urban Meyer era. With Ryan Day, the Buckeyes have made the CFP thrice, one of which saw them play in the National Championship Game. Still, a storied program like Ohio State isn't satisfied with just winning records and playoff berths. They're one of the biggest names in college football, and the Buckeye fandom expects nothing less than to win it all every year.

Ohio State football's fruitful offseason

Can 2024 finally end the decade-long drought? It's quite possible, looking at the recent offseason. The Buckeyes have plenty of returning talent, in addition to quality transfer portal additions.

Following Marvin Harrison Jr.'s move to the NFL, Emeka Egbuka is expected to lead the wideout room. Egbuka had the third-most receiving yards (515) in the team last year. Offensive lineman Donovan Jackson will suit up for another season as well. On the defensive side, Jack Sawyer (DE) and Tyleik Williams (DT) are also running it back for another campaign with the Buckeyes. Sawyer had 6.5 sacks last year while Williams finished his season with 54 combined tackles (20 solo).

From the transfer portal, quarterback Will Howard has moved to Columbus from Kansas State, and will likely be the starting signal-caller this coming season. Ohio State also landed former Alabama safety Caleb Downs, who shocked everyone by entering the portal despite a stellar season with the Tide. Furthermore, running back Quinshon Judkins — who starred for Ole Miss in the past two seasons — will also be a Buckeye this year.

All in all, there's a lot that Ohio State football fans can look forward to come September.

Country music singer Mark Chesnutt is recovering after undergoing emergency heart surgery earlier this week.

Chesnutt, 60, was hospitalized Sunday after experiencing a “heart health issue” over the weekend, his team wrote in an Instagram post . He underwent emergency quadruple bypass surgery and is forced to cancel his upcoming tour dates as he focuses on his recovery, he said.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the cancellation of my upcoming shows,” Chesnutt wrote in his Instagram post. “I send my love and gratitude to my family and friends, the band and fans for your understanding, prayers and support, and look forward to seeing you all again soon at a honky tonk near you.”

Chesnutt’s next concerts were scheduled for Friday in Lake Charles, Louisiana and Saturday in George West, Texas. His summer tour was scheduled to include stops across the U.S., including a show in North Lawrence, Ohio, located about an hour south of Cleveland.

Chesnutt’s emergency heart surgery and tour cancellation comes about seven months after he revealed he was battling “extreme health issues” in November 2023. In an Instagram post , the “Blame it on Texas” singer said at the time he was “coming off the road for the next couple months to concentrate on getting well,” with plans to return to touring in February.

“I truly appreciate your heartfelt understanding in my commitment, and your sensitivity to my decision, and the privacy to allow me this time,” Chesnutt wrote on Instagram.

A native of Beaumont, Texas, Chesnutt rose to fame as a country star in the 1990s, releasing eight albums throughout the decade. In addition to “Blame it on Texas,” Chesnutt is best known for his hit songs “Bubba Shot the Jukebox,” “Brother Jukebox,” “Too Cold at Home,” “It Sure is Monday,” “Ol’ Country,” and more.

Ohio State football schedule: Buckeyes add historic Grambling State matchup in 2025, drop UConn from slate

Ohio State is making a change to its 2025 nonconference schedule, swapping an October matchup against UConn for a September showdown against HBCU power Grambling State . This will be the first meeting between the Buckeyes and the Tigers as well as Grambling State's first game ever against a Big Ten opponent.

The Tigers are set to travel to Columbus, Ohio, on Sept. 6. This represents Ohio State's fifth game against an FCS opponent and second facing an HBCU institution.

"This is another example of us being able to showcase our brand to a national audience," Grambling State athletic director Travyean Scott said in a statement. "We are thrilled that our players and fans will get to experience a matchup between two of the most storied football programs in the country. When you think of college football , Grambling State and Ohio State are two of the names that many think of immediately.  This contest will allow our both fan bases to experience the cultural and athletic excellence of both institutions."

Ohio State was originally scheduled to play UConn on Oct. 18 in the middle of its conference slate. This move allows the Buckeyes to potentially have an open date during Big Ten play. The Buckeyes play Texas to open the 2025 season on Aug. 30 and Ohio on Sept. 13 to complete their nonconference schedule.

Grambling State is no stranger to major road trips. The Tigers played LSU in their home opener last season and face another FBS opponent in Louisiana to open the 2024 season.

Though Grambling hasn't had a winning season since 2019, the Tigers are one of the south's most accomplished programs. They have won 27 Southwestern Athletic Conference titles and 16 Black College National Championships.
