Koh Rok Day Trip from Koh Lanta (All Highlights)

Koh Rok Island

If you have ever been to some islands in this country then you probably know this scenario:

You just took a ferry for an hour or two, checked in at your hotel and the first thing you do is to take a look at the beach. Then it often turns out that the nicest beach on that particular island is just fine but nothing like you have seen in the tour guides, websites or google image search.

The reason for that is that you need to do another day trip on the speedboat to some of the smaller, remote islands to see the real gorgeous beaches. There are many examples for this: On Koh Samui you would go on a trip to Ang Thong Marine Park or on Koh Chang you would take the boat to Koh Mak or Koh Kood .

So yes, that’s right: You visit one island only to find that the best beaches in the region aren’t actually where you are staying.  It’s the same on Koh Lanta. The beaches are alright but it’s nothing compared to Koh Rok , which are two tiny islands about one hour by speed boat from Koh Lanta away. So a stay in Koh Lanta is all about exploring the different viewpoints by motorbike, chill out at the many scenic beach bars and maybe do some kayak trip or visit the old town. I have covered that already in the Lanta Daytime Guide .

But the most unforgettable experience will definitely be a full day boat trip to Koh Rok. There are actually three different tours being offered like you can see in my photo of that tour brochure below:

Koh Rok Trip Prices

Koh Rok is by far the most beautiful and least visited island of all three tours. The 4 islands tour might be fun, too, but if your priority is on the beach itself and snorkeling then you should go for Koh Rok. And well, Koh Phi Phi is another must visit, but I’d recommend you to do this trip from Ao Nang instead – the tour price is cheaper and the distance is also shorter.

When I visited Koh Lanta last month, I booked my Koh Rok trip right at my hotel ( Keereelay Resort , really nice place up on the hill with awesome value for money) and it cost me 1,300 Baht. It was during the low season (October) so they gave me the discount from the standard price which apparently is 1,700 Baht (at least that’s what it says in the tour brochure above).

The tour price includes pick up from your hotel, the speed boat cruise, snorkeling gear, buffet lunch on the island, water, fruit and transfer back to your hotel. That’s a fantastic deal if you ask me and even if it cost 2,000 Baht I think it’s still worth it.

They picked me up after breakfast at 7:30am and went to two more hotels where more guys jumped on the Toyota pickup. After about 15 minutes drive we reached the speed boat pier (see the location on the map at the end of the guide). They asked us to wait in the seating area until it was time to leave:

Koh Rok Trip

At 9:30am we were introduced to our Thai tour guides (good English skills) and entered the speed boat that had space for 30 people. We left Koh Lanta and cruised (or rather raced?) directly towards Koh Rok about 50km down south.

Koh Rok Trip 2

After almost exactly 1 hour we reached the small sister islands named Koh Rok Yai and Koh Rok Noi ( yai means big and noi means small). The boat stopped just about 50 meters off the shore and our guide gave us the snorkeling gear and announced that we had 1 hour to spend there.

There was some nice fish, but to be honest the second snorkeling spot in the afternoon was much nicer – see below.

So at about 11:30am we cruised over to the main beach of Koh Rok Yai:

Koh Rok Trip 3

We all left the boat and walked towards the visitor area just behind the beach where they had already prepared our buffet lunch under the trees.

Koh Rok Trip 4

After lunch we had a “relaxation time” of 1 hour.

I walked away from the crowd and just 100m down the beach there were surprisingly few people:

Koh Rok Trip 5

And I continued walking down the beach until I found my little paradise.

Koh Rok Trip 6

At that point I couldn’t resist any longer so I stopped taking photos, took off my shirt and jumped into the crystal clear water. Fantastic experience and I was surprised how few people walked away from the main visitor center to swim in this much more relaxed part of the beach. And believe it or not, I even saw a sea star in that water (I almost stepped on it!).

Of course I want to give you the complete impression of the beach on Koh Rok and how many people there were near the visitor center, so here you go:

Koh Rok Trip 7

Like you can see, it’s not that bad. There are far less speed boats arriving at the beach on Koh Rok compared to the likes of Maya Bay on Koh Phi Phi or in the Similan Islands . However, I was told that they have just recently started to promote Koh Rok to keep up with the increasing number of tourists, so make sure you visit there before its natural beauty gets somewhat spoilt.

And in case you wonder – yes, there are quite a lot of Chinese travelers joining the tours. But I have found them quite nice, even got to talk with a couple of them and I really couldn’t complain about what I got to see:

Koh Rok Trip 9

At about 2pm it was time to get on the boat again. Don’t think that’s a lot of boats until you’ve been to Maya Bay.

Koh Rok Trip 10

We cruised over to the other island, Koh Rok Noi, for our second snorkeling spot. Here is a picture of another speed boat I took along the way:

Koh Rok Trip 11

Most people took out their snorkeling gear again, but there were also a few guys who were too tired or just too lazy to jump into the water again. I did go for the second snorkeling session though, and it turned out to be a great decision.

There were incredibly many colorful fish, lots of impressive reefs and I even discovered three “Nemo” fishes! Make sure to check out my short video below, I’ve got it all recorded.

Koh Rok Trip 12

After 40 minutes we left Koh Rok and cruised back to Koh Lanta, where we reached the jetty at around 4pm. The pickups already awaited our arrival and at 4:30pm everyone was back in their hotel.

Koh Rok Trip 13

One of the best day trips I have ever done in Thailand. I actually wished I had planned my schedule more flexible and had more time, because then I would have stayed one night on Koh Rok. Yes, they have tents available for 500 Baht a night.

Must be an amazing experience to chill on that gorgeous beach in the late afternoon until sunset, drink cool Singha beers and get a little nostalgic on what a wonderful country you’re living in. Well, surely I’m doing that every once in a while, but next time I’m going there I will make sure to spend a night there.

But even if you don’t – it’s well worth it and not (yet) as overrun as many other islands in Thailand.

Koh Rok islands

Koh Rok is a small archipelago in southern Thailand in the Andaman Sea. It is located close to Koh Lanta island and is a top-rated snorkeling destination for a day trip from there. Being part of the Mu Koh Lanta Marine National Park, the Koh Rok islands promise a thriving underwater ecosystem. Vibrant marine life is an unbeatable highlight of the Koh Rok tour from Koh Lanta island, where waters are not as pristine.

Koh Rok consists of two islands, always included in the Koh Rok tour. The first island is Koh Rok Yai, with a long stretch of white powder beach, considered among the top ten most beautiful beaches in Thailand. The second island, Koh Rok Noi, features an impressive snorkeling area, a pole mark that points to the end of Thailand, and a sublime Koh Rok Waterfall for diving. Both islands can be visited from Koh Lanta from November till May. There are no accommodation options in Koh Rok islands.

Koh Rok Yai

Koh Rok Yai welcomes visitors with a long stretch of white powder beach. It is among the top ten most beautiful beaches in Thailand, which might be the only reason why Koh Rok tours are so popular. Walk from Man Sai Beach into a rainforest of massive banyan trees before reaching Ao Tha Lu Beach, overlooking a bay surrounded by black limestone cliffs. Koh Rok Yai is located south of Koh Lanta and boasts of being one of the twin islands of the Koh Rok archipelago to be kept in its most natural state.

You will discover an iconic stretch of white powder-soft sands at Ao Man Sai and Ao Tha Lu beach, serving home to hermit crabs. An interesting thing about the Koh Rok Yai beaches is the implementation of the Land Hermit Crab’s Home, which encourages visitors to play a part in helping to protect the creatures. All they need to do is leave empty cans, which will then become the hermit crabs’ homes. Behind Ao Man Sai beach, you can also encounter the monitor lizards in the jungle, or laze around in the crystal clear shallow waters. A stop at this island during your Koh Rok tour will leave an everlasting impression.

Koh Rok Noi

Koh Rok Noi is the sister island of Koh Rok Yai and often included in the list of those going on a Koh Rok snorkeling tour. Located very near to Koh Rok Yai, the crescent-shaped bay of Koh Rok Noi is the main attraction of the island. Snorkeling in the water surrounding Koh Rok Noi makes for a beautiful experience with the sightings of various species of fish such as the barracudas and tunas. Among its vibrant coral gardens, there are also giant clams that attract snorkelers of all ages.

On land, Koh Rok Noi features a pole mark that points to the end of Thailand. There is also a sublime Koh Rok Waterfall hidden in its interior. The Koh Rok Waterfall is unique in that it is visible only during the rainy season. Ao Sarn Chao Beach on Koh Rok Noi gained fame due to fishermen who came here to build shrines. The shrines protect their ships from harm when they go out to the sea for fishing. However, most visitors would probably choose to travel to Koh Rok Noi for snorkeling or diving only. Luckily, snorkeling conditions in Koh Rok Noi bay are favorable most of the year.

Koh Rok tour from Koh Lanta

Koh Rok snorkeling tour is a top-rated day trip from Koh Lanta. This small and pristine archipelago is only 40 minutes by boat from Koh Lanta, attracting snorkelers and divers alike. The Koh Rok tour usually covers the best of two main islands – Koh Rok Yai and Koh Rok Noi. Although further exploration of the remote Koh Haa archipelago is also possible when visiting Koh Rok from Koh Lanta.

There are two ways to get to Koh Rok islands from Koh Lanta. The most popular choice is to join a day trip by speedboat alongside other vacationers. Such day trips proceed on a fixed itinerary and include a bit of snorkeling, sightseeing, and beachcombing. However, if you wish to experience the most of this remarkable destination at your own pace, we recommend taking a private boat tour with Islander.

Koh Rok and Koh Haa island day tour

The five Koh Haa islands, often included in the Koh Rok tour, are known as mini paradise, which offers a rugged and untouched atmosphere. Few islands as pristine as Koh Haa remain in Thailand, where you can enjoy the secluded beaches, unspoiled coral reefs, and iconic diving. Both archipelagos of Koh Rok and Koh Haa are part of the Mu Koh Lanta Marine National Park, which is best to visit between November and May.

Koh Lanta Snorkeling Experience – Tour To Koh Rok

A Koh Lanta snorkeling tour is on our list of top things to do when visiting Thailand.

Offering a relaxing getaway with it’s quiet beaches and rainforest surroundings, Koh Lanta is a great destination for couples as well as families.

With plenty of outdoor activities like a day tour to Koh Rok for snorkeling. You can be active or just sit back and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the island.

You’ll also find fantastic luxury resorts for accommodations.

A magical underwater world with coral as far as you can see and brightly colored fish dancing in the choreographed show of nature.

The snorkeling near Koh Lanta is absolutely breathtaking!

planning a trip to Thailand - snorkeling koh lanta

We had tried snorkeling in Koh Phi Phi and enjoyed it, but didn’t realize what good snorkeling was until we experienced it with Opal Speedboat Tours off the coats of Koh Rok.

Up until that point, we had only gone snorkeling by longtail boat off the beaches of Koh Phi Phi. That experience was not bad at all.

We were able to stop at famous spots like Maya Bay – AKA “The Beach” – and met some cheeky monkeys on their own island.

However, our experience of visiting Koh Rok was something on a higher level.

Koh Rok Island

The island of Koh Rok is uninhabited and only visited by a small number of tourists so it has maintained its natural beauty.

There are no public boats allowed on Koh Rok, so the only way people can get there are through tours or chartering a private boat.

You have to remember that May to November is the rainy season in Thailand so there are no tours and such or  accommodations available on Koh Rok.

While there are no formal resort-type accommodations, those who want to stay longer than a day have the option of renting a tent and bedding.

coral and tropical fish snorkeling - Koh Lanta, Thailand

It’s surrounding waters contain coral and sea creatures that are a must see.

Part of the Mu Ko Lanta National Park that is protected, Koh Rok consist of two islands that are separated by a channel of hard and soft coral.

The crystal-clear waters along with the 5 meter depth of some areas of coral make this area one of the best for snorkeling in the Andaman Sea.

You’ll not only love the colorful coral stretching just below the water’s surface, but surely be mesmerized by the variety of marine life that you will encounter, including angel fish, puffer fish, and sea cucumbers.

Koh Rok - White powder sand beach, speedboat tour from Koh Lanta, Thailand

On the island, you can relax on the powdery white sand, or even swim with colorful fish in just a few inches of water by the beach (try to go in areas where there few people).

Don’t be surprised if you get a visit from the monitor lizards (some of the biggest you’ll see in Thailand) as they are on top of the food chain here.

Watch your step, especially in the shaded areas covered in plants and bush just beyond the beach. They love to lounge around and check out the scene!

Day Tour From Koh Lanta To Koh Rok

We visited Koh Lanta in peak tourist season, December. We arrived tired due to the activities in Koh Phi Phi and the one hour long ferry ride to the island.

Luckily, our accommodations on Koh Lanta turned out to be just the getaway we needed.

We stayed at the LaLaanta Hideaway Resort , which is very true to it’s name. If you want to feel like a castaway (in a good way) this is where you should stay.

The resort is tucked away at the edge of the island with lush rainforest surrounding it.

Their private beach was huge and very quiet even in the height of tourist season. I would venture to guess that they have the best Koh Lanta beach!

Where To Stay In Koh Lanta:

  • LaLaanta Hideaway Resort
  • Crown Lanta Resort & Spa

We had no plans of snorkeling again.

However, after a day of relaxing on the private beach and swimming in the calm waters of the Andaman Sea, we decided to get a bit active and do something.

While there’s lots to do on the island such as visiting waterfalls and caves , the idea of checking out another island intrigued us and we were still hungry for more underwater fun.

Opal Speedboat Tour from Koh Lanta to Koh Rok for snorkeling

The resort was able to coordinate the tour on our behalf. They booked with with Opal Tours for the following day.

The tour can also be booked directly with Opal Travel by calling or emailing them. Pricing and tour information can be found on their website.

They offer a 4 island Tour that get’s a lot of high ratings as well. So if you’re in Koh Lanta for a few days, we would suggest taking that tour as well.

At the time of our booking, we paid 1700 THB (just under $50 USD) per person for the full day Koh Rok tour.

Speedboat To Koh Rok And Snorkeling

The speedboad met us right on our beach around 8:30 in the morning. This was a fun way to get picked up and really kicked us off to a great start.

It was obvious we were the last passengers (around 20 others already on the boat) to board considering that right after we got on, the boat took off for Koh Rok.

angel fish Koh Rok Snorkeling - Koh Lanta, Thailand

The ride on the speedboat was pretty smooth and the 45 minutes felt a lot shorter. I think it helped that we were sitting in back seats.

We really didn’t feel a lot of turbulence. I tend to get very heavy motion sickness and by some miracle it didn’t happen on this boat ride! Phew!

coral and marine life Koh Lanta to Koh Rok, Thailand

The crew on our tour were fun and hospitable. They took great care to make sure we were safe and aware of our surroundings.

They informed us of the days plans and timing so it was good to know exactly what was going to happen and when.

Each time we stopped to get into the water, they were attentive to all of us. Making sure to help us with our gear and getting on and off the boat.

  • Transfer from-to hotel
  • First class service
  • Lunch Buffet (Thai menu with seasonal fruit)
  • Snorkeling Equipment
  • Life Jacket

There’s no need for a towel because you get dry quickly on the boat and on the beach. If you really feel the need to have one, you should bring it with you.

Additionally, I brought my water shoes just because I, personally, am more comfortable wearing flippers with my water shoes on (I dunno, maybe that’s weird?).

If you are taking your mobile phone, you should have a waterproof case for it (make sure to test it for leaks beforehand).

A waterproof camera is a must if you want to take the memories of this amazing experience home with you.

Great post on snorkelling. I worked in Indonesia for two months and went snorkelling every weekend in Bunaken, a world-class diving and snorkelling site with thousands of species of tropical fish and coral, with a 100 m vertical coral wall. I just posted my blog about my snorkelling experiences on boomervoice.ca. Thirty years ago, I lived in Singapore and we did lots of snorkelling in Malaysia but I did not have an underwater camera in those days!

Taiss Nowrouzi Avatar

Wow! sounds like you’ve had quite a lot of really great snorkeling experiences! That’s so awesome! I hope to do more soon! I do love having a camera that I can use to capture my underwater experiences, it’s a nice way to share with others :)

Thailand seriously has the best beaches ever! I’ve never felt sand so soft in my life! Looks like you had a fabulous snorkel trip!

Yes! LOve the beached of Thailand :)

WOW how beautiful I have dove in Florida, but the water here looks amazing – We will have to add it to our bucket list of must do!

Yes, the island we went to from Koh Lanta was spectacular and the water really surprised me. I never knew hoe great snorkeling could be!

Nomadic Foot Avatar

This place looks awesome for snorkeling. I was only aware about Coral island in Pattaya for under water activities. Photos looks amazing.

Sara Essop Avatar

I was in Thailand recently but unfortunately I didn’t get to visit Koh Lanta or Koh Rok . It looks so beautiful and much less touristy than Phuket and Koh Phi Phi.

We got here after Koh Phi Phi and it was refreshing to get away from so much craziness!

Bhushavali Avatar

Wow! The place look incredible! I would be so startled if the monitor lizard comes out of a bush beside me! Lolz!!! I hope to visit Thailand soon!!!

That lizard was stealthy! Hope you get to enjoy Thailand someday!

Adriana Smith Avatar

I love snorkeling. Unfortunately I’ve only done it in Florida. Seems like I need to grab my fins, mask, and life jacket to explore the sea life here! Thanks for sharing.

Do it! so much fun :)

Rhiannon Avatar

This looks like paradise! I went snorkelling the first time ever in Belize back in July and saw all sorts of weird and wonderful creatures. Ever since then I’ve been eager to again somewhere else in the world so as to explore a different biodiversity. Thailand is top contender at the moment – I’d love to visit for the snorkelling and diving opportunities. And your photos and experience just make it sound so much better!

Thank you Rhiannon. Hope you get a chance to do more underwater stuff and maybe in Thailand someday!

Punita Malhotra Avatar

That monitor lizard looks as big as a crocodile! I would be on the lookout for those all the time while on the beach. Your post reminded me of the great time we had in Thailand a couple of years back. A beach holiday is due.

Those lizards must have a good life on that island! I know I would!

Adrenaline Romance Avatar

That is a beautiful snorkeling site! We would love to snorkel and scuba dive there. :)

Yes! You should try it! We had a blast!
