ABC announce Lexicon Of Love orchestral tour dates for 2024

Connor Gotto

ABC will return to the road with a new orchestral tour celebrating their seminal debut album, ‘The Lexicon Of Love’.

Martin Fry and co. have joined forces with Southbank Sinfonia and long-time collaborator Anne Dudley for the run of February 2024 shows, which will feature the album played in full alongside hits from their catalogue.

Don't Miss...

Martin fry on abc’s mantrap: ‘we wanted to be as glam as duran duran – but they were in sri lanka and we were in a sainsbury’s car park’, martin fry: ‘if there can be 37 episodes of ‘breaking bad’, why can’t there be another episode of ‘the lexicon of love’ [exclusive].

Topping the charts upon its release in 1982, the LP features the Top 20 hit singles Tears Are Not Enough , Poison Arrow , The Look Of Love and All Of My Heart .

Opening at the Brighton Dome on February 5, the tour will take in Nottingham, Sheffield, Glasgow, Gateshead, Birmingham, Bath, Liverpool and Manchester before concluding at The London Palladium on February 17.

Tickets go on sale 10am BST on July 14.

It’s not the first time Martin has revisited the album ; the group returned to the UK Top 5 back in 2016 with ‘The Lexicon of Love II’ – an album he never saw himself making.

“I mean, 1983 would have been the right time but it did very well,” the singer told RETROPOP earlier this year. “For years I’d been avoiding the idea but after doing an orchestral show at the Royal Albert Hall I looked out into the audience and I could see and feel how much the songs from the original album meant to them.

“They’d been through a time capsule like I had of, you know, kids growing up, failed marriages, businesses falling apart, shit happening to them, and yet there they were singing along. It was like, ‘Wouldn’t it be interesting to see what was happening to them now as elder statesmen?’ and that’s where the germ of the idea for ‘The Lexicon of Love II’ came from.”

It was originally called ‘The Lexicon of a Lost Ideal’ until someone at the record company heard the tracks and suggested the eventual title. “If they’d suggested that at the beginning, I’d never have finished it because it would have been too intimidating,” he laughed.

“But I embraced the idea, like ‘If there can be 37 episodes of ‘Breaking Bad’, why can’t there be another episode of ‘The Lexicon of Love’?”

Was in UK for just four days June 2022. Saw Lisa Stansfield (amazing!) and Simply Red near Canterbury--great weather. The next day it was a tossup ABC in Bristol or Simple Minds at Blenheim Palace near Oxford the next day. I chose Simple Minds and it was rained out the entire concert. the brits had a great time but I wished the whole night I had chosen ABC in Bristol for their 40th anniversary tour. Will see them soon---must seem them in Ojai California state-side July 2022.

Great show at a great venue. The orchestra sounded fantastic and ABC as gòod as they always have. Only amazing point is that how come they didnt do more hits?

The first hall of the show was good but lacking in recognisable hits. They are hugely talented and sound fantastic but we had to wait until the 2nd half when lexicon of love was played before standing up and dancing was required. 37 years and their hits are as rare and valuable as his gold jacket.

Oh what memories!

ABC is fantastic live!! My wife and I had such a great time last night at the Retro Futura concert at the Wiltern Theater - 07/29/2018.

If you get a chance to see them live, don't even think about it. You will not be disappointed. Martin Fry is one classy rock star!

On The Red Carpet

Following a life-changing accident, jenifer lewis ends 'idol' performance with impressive high kick.

Lewis reveals what her high kick during "American Idol" performance meant to her.

OTRC logo

LOS ANGELES -- "American Idol" has featured its share of amazing performances this season, including a special performance by legendary actress, Jenifer Lewis, accompanied by multi-Grammy-winning musician, Terence Blanchard. The pair performed "Dig a Little Deeper" from the Disney hit, "The Princess and the Frog!"

The show was completed with an energetic high kick, past the singer's head. On The Red Carpet spoke to her about the kick, as well as the new attraction, "Tiana's Bayou Adventure," inspired by the film.

"I couldn't walk for eight months, and I said, 'You've got to get that kick back, baby. If you get your kick back, then you're on your way,' and that was the goal!" Lewis explained. "And if you reach for that, if you really reach for it, you'll get there," she went on to say.

"We talked about this during the rehearsal, and in rehearsal, the leg was that high. My leg stayed on the ground," Blanchard joked.

In November of 2022, Lewis fell off a 10-foot-high balcony during an African vacation. "I went out. I was just taking in the fact that I was back in the Serengeti, once again, and I'm walking, and all of a sudden, I had fallen ten feet into a dry ravine," she told Robin Roberts in a Good Morning America interview earlier this year.

Just 18 months after her fall, Lewis is feeling good and couldn't be happier to be performing again.

She recounted the rousing number. "I'm happy to be alive, let alone sing a song like 'Dig a Little Deeper,' which is mine, you know. I was Mama Odie, and Randy Newman was there in that studio with that full orchestra the day I recorded 'Dig a Little Deeper,' and now to sing it in front of millions of people, I just came up off the ground of the Serengeti and just started performing! That's just who I am!" she beamed.

"Tiana's Bayou Adventure" the newly-imagined attraction, opening June 28 at Walt Disney World Resort, and later this year at Disneyland Resort, features characters from the beloved film, including Lewis' very own Mama Odie.

Lewis explained, "I realized why I didn't die on the ground of the Serengeti. I had more moments of bliss. I felt like I had breathed the breath of life into that animatronic, because she looked so real!"

Tune in to the season finale of "American Idol" Sunday night at 5 PM PT on ABC.
